I was pleased with the Radial direct drive amp simulator. However I realised that my existing distortion pedal wasn't going to be enough to be amp free but still maintain decent distortion. So I thought I'd try the company's tonebone trimode. It solved the problem and gave me more besides. The price was half price, reconditioned. The unit includes a tube and because of this gives an authentic tube amp sound. I was struck by the power of the unit. To get the same effects from an amp you would really have to crank it. At the same time there is subtle variety here because you can have your searing leads on one channel, and an on the edge of breaking up sound on your rhythm channel. There are plenty of fine tuning functions on the unit. It takes some experimentation to get your two channels the way you want, but once set you are good to go. So you can dial in subtle distortion right through to full raunch. The distortion remains transparent, but meshes well with a sweet cream pedal I have. The unit itself easily creates tube screamer sounds if that's what you want. A solid unit,it certainly looks like its built to last. When I first played it, it would sometimes drop volume on the lead channel, but Radial do explain about this on their website, and its very easy to rectify- just putting a lead jack in and out of a send/return input a few times if you dont use it. The problem went away without my needing to do this. The only other issue is that the adapter is an unusual power specification, but the unit does come with its own adapter. Certainly recommend. The first step in putting this unit together is to install the 1/4" connectors. right out of the gate, the holes milled for the 1/4" connectors are to close to the top of the box, and the connectors are not able to install and sit flush against the side of the box. the only fix is to oval out the holes, or maybe drill new holes. the only reason I gave 2 stars is that it still might sound good, and it's cheap. I purchased this with the intention of modifying the original circuit. I used a 2n3904 and a nte123ap in a cascaded darlington configuration and I used a germanium diode with red led instead of the provided pair of silicon diodes. It functions as a dirty boost but when pushed, it has a raspy aggressive distortion with asymmetrical clipping that closely resembles early Led Zeppelin tones.Josh

Easy to use, nice chorus, nice reverb, delay is a bit touchy and difficult to adjust on the fly. The distortion is pretty good..when you engage the button, I get a lot of noise through my amp. I normally play flamenco guitar and have a very good acoustic amp I use for flamenco. I got this pedal to use with a low gain amp at rehearsals. I didn't want to drag out my regular board or take it apart. I was looking for an inexpensive overdrive pedal. I saw this , read the reviews and said what the heck. I actually got the pedal for free as I had enough reward points. I regularly use a Boss Blues Driver which I have had for over ten years. I got the pedal and hooked it up and was pleasantly surprised. It is very comparable to my Blues Driver. It accepts both my Dunlop nine volt adapters and my One Spot power supplies. The case is metal. I may even incorporate it into my regular board for another degree of overdrive. If you are considering trying an OD pedal, you can't go wrong with this. I am a semi professional guitarist with over fifty years of playing experience. I use tube amps and mainly American Fender guitars. I know what I'm talking about. An OD pedal is not the same as a distortion pedal. The purpose of an OD is to push you're amp to a higher gain level than it may be capable of or to give you a little more guts when playing a lead without changing the settings on your amp. The Good: The sound of this thing is great for grimy, doom metal. It's easy to use, sounds great, and has a decent depth of customization. The Bad: You have to press in the hinges on the pedal itself as the battery is under the pedal. It was scratched up before I even got to play it because of this. There's no reason the manufacturer could not have just put a small door in the bottom of the unit like every other pedal I've ever used. Also, the first time I changed the battery, the negative wire pulled out of the connector. I've decided that since I already bought it and like the way it sounds, I'm going to jury-rig a battery connector outside the main body. It'll look like cr4p, but I'll be able to use it without damaging it further and won't have to spend extra for a 110v adapter. I had read about the difficulty changing the battery, but figured I'd give it a shot because it's got so low-priced. Had I gone to a brink and mortar store and seen it, I would not have purchased this unit. If someone already has an adapter they plan on using with it, by all means do so.Russ G

Ok lets all remember that this is an overdrive pedal. This is designed to help out your sound and not necessarily be the end all and be all of overdrive tones. There is a reason that amps that have a clean and dirty channel cost more and the better the sound the more they cost. Distortion pedals are relatively cheap and can really help out an amp that is so-so or give a little punch to a lead so that you don't have to fiddle with the knob settings of the amp right before. With that said THIS PEDAL WILL DELIVER. Simple, sleek and with three settings that cover a wide range of sounds. I like the LED that confirms ON-OFF if you are using it as a lead boost. Sometimes you can get carried away and keep using it in the rythm sections, but the light reminds you that you are not Zakk Wylde and that maybe some of the rest of the band might want to be heard. Overall its a great overdrive pedal not over the top and its awesome i Reccomend it to anyone I love the pedal its so simple to use three knobs and it gives great sound it really beefs up the sound on any amp no matter what channel. When i played on clean then turn this pedal on it made it sound jump to a crunch settting even though i set it on clean, on overdrive it gives it that extra kick that I was looking for. I use this to drive my OD1 channel on my Blackstar series one 100 amp. With all the knobs set at 12 o'clock it gives me the perfect high gain crunch I need. Easy pinch harmonics and sustain. The overall sound is dead on where it doesn't color my original signal. Oh and the gain on the amp is turned all the way up. I have the Blackstar dual overdrive that does not have the right sound and the Hardwire overdrive that also own that i like due to the high gain I want with very little hum or hiss you get when driving an amp however that creamy tube sound is not there like the ZW44.kmclean612

Had this on want list for awhile. Bought it new when I saw a price break of 17% on MF. Software & plugins misadvertised by IK multimedia. They make it sound like you get all the iOS and OS X plugins and amplitube included with the pedal. Well some you do as freebie hook and bait and others you have to buy. They do give you Amplitube 4 Deluxe which is good, (4)-T-Racks processors, Mic Room, Ableton Live 9 Lite (Mac/PC), Amplitube Acoustic, VocalLive and Mic Room for iOS .I already previously bought Amplitube Max for OS X and most of the iPad amps & stomp effects apps for iOS. Previously using iRig HD as interface into iPad Pro 12.9 1st Gen. This pedal allows you to control amp and stomp effects for live performances and studio using stomp mode and LIVE settings and to scroll between user saved settings and favorites. I am constantly tweaking my user settings. I mount iPad on separate stand with an extension cable not included, so I can control some settings with my fingers. tips and tricks. I like how IK Multimedia approaches tone through modeling Amplifiers very quality sounding industry top of the line manufacturers. Tuner is good. I figured out by accident by placing finger and holding on volume knobs on amps using ASSIGN CONTROL to assign a selected parameter to pedal or external controller. You can save this to your settings and the parameters you select are highlighted in faint yellow color. I was wanting to see a volume pedal and this satisfied my desire. Having to have an iPad or Computer is not cheap to use with this pedal, but top of the line stuff here IMHO. IK Multimedia is an Italian company and product. I have been playing guitar for a long time. I was certified by the Recording Workshop in Ohio, for studio recording (though I am an amateur). I will admit, I already owned an iPhone 8s, and had already purchased a few of the amp models in the app to use with iRig HD, which I feel is important, because if this product is to be used with iOS, it comes with a very limited set of amps. On PC/Mac it has much wider utility out of the box. However, this product is great. The tones I have been getting are fantastic, I can emulate famous tones I hear on records, pretty much on the fly, the presets are not great, but the recording is, imo, high quality and sound really good. I have not used this on an iPhone 7, and have heard there are issues, but on PC and my iPhone 8s, it has worked great. Because I liked this so much, I splurged and bought a new iPad, and upgraded the software to the MAX version, and I really love, it. I have had the stomp for about a month and a half, and bought the iPad 12 days ago, I will be returning it and getting more storage, because I have already created so much new content from the ease of use, I am worried I'll fill up the smaller capacity at only 32gb. The only real negative I have experienced, has been: if I have the app running on my iOS device, and unplug and the stomp from my device, and then reconnect the stomp, it will not work. I have to stop the app, reconnect the stomp and restart the app. It's annoying but no big deal, as I don't have to unplug it very often in the middle of using it, but enough that I noticed the issue.Nel
First of all, I paid $200 for the floor pedal that controls my amp, and that’s all it does, but this for $300 for me wasn’t a hard choice honestly. The first thing I did was plug my phone into it, then ran a cable to my practice amp, and it sounds great! It was so easy to use since I already have AmpliTube for the iPhone, and I’m looking forward to checking out Ableton 10 lite and the AmpliTube custom shop (both came with it), but I also use some Positive Grid products, like Bias FX and JamUp. I was happily surprised to find out, with a small amount of “googling”, that this can be used with just about anything you’d want to use it with. You just have to slightly mess around with the midi assignments (look it up if you’re scared, it’s super easy) and you can use it as a controller for other amp/music programs and recording software. I think this thing is built like a tank, and since I used the payment plan through AMS, it was a really easy choice for the price.KillBill

This pedal has gotta be one of the most underrated OD pedals out there…. especially given its price point. I have A,B'd this thing against modded BD-2s, modded OD-3's, and the SD-1W and the Mojomojo is just bigger and less tinty. I dont want it to be, but it is. It is a wonderful sounding OD and is great for OD rhythm sounds. It is in the cranked Marshall class of OD's so not to be confused with the green OD pedal. The only area that some of my modded ODs beat it in is sustain. It does tail off on lead stuff sooner than some more expensive pedals. That is the only area that it doesn't win though. You can also use this as an always on boost as well. All in all this thing always seems to knock more expensive pedals off my board time and time again. Highly recommend this pedal and at it's price point it should be in all OD aficionados collection.KL
I use the MojoMojo on my Fender G-DEC Junior and it helps to make the amp sound warmer, richer and fuller. The MojoMojo when dialed in right adds a very slight and suttle low mid thickness, hard to explain. I find its not a "set it and forget it" type of pedal (i.e. Tube screamer), for each amp setting I have to dial it in or it will sound muddy but with a little tweaking between the amp settings and the pedal settings (usually level settings rather than tone knobs) I can get them matched tonally and sonically, bass tone knob is usually set pretty low. I use low output humbuckers and it works great with these. I can get nice overdrive without changing the amps overall characteristic sound.

This pedal sounds really nice. It's very bassy. But it's not muddy at all. It's got more gain than most overdrives but it's not really high gain. It's a hair less from being a high gain distortion pedal. I has driving mids and sounds very robust. The tone control is very useful. U can color the tone from a smooth overdrive to a cranked distortion pedal kind of cutting high gain for leads. I'd say it's pretty versatile compared to a super overdrive perhaps. This is the only overdrive pedal I have so don't have a point of comparison. I chose this over the Tube Screamer for my Telecaster based on YouTube sound comparisons, and certainly don't regret it. While I bought it to use with a Blues Junior, which is currently on backorder from MF, I've been using it on a Champion 40 modeling amp. Through the clean channel, you get a range of overdrive sounds, from crunch, though British into super distorted metal, particularly with the guitar volume cranked up. Switching from clean to modeling channels shows this pedal generates a smooth balanced overdrive sound that you just cannot reproduce with the amp's gain and voice options, which sound thin and tinny. The only minor negative is the power supply – expect to replace the 9v battery immediately, and understand that whenever an input cable is connected the unit is on. I noticed the power light had dimmed from leaving a cable plugged in for a day, even though everything else was off. Can't wait to hear this through a tube amp!Mike

I am really impressed with the Behringer VT999. I own one of the original Tube Works BK Butler designed Real Tube Overdrives. For the last 30 years it has been the Standard by which I judge all overdrive effects and I have tried just about everything else out. The VT999 is the only overdrive that I have found to date that matches the tone of the BK Butler. Everything from subtle warmth boost to pure crunch it's in there. Used as a pre amp you can get a Vintage Marshal tone out of a Fender twin. I absolutely love this effect.
Honestly, the only complaint I have about this pedal is that instead of being constantly on or off, the light blinks, and that's just a personal quirk; it's not cause for a lost star. More importantly, the tone of the pedal is quite good. It preserves the natural warmness of tone already present in my Gretsch, and even adds a bit when tweaked. As well, the high, mid, and low controls are very effective in tweaking sound; each one makes a big difference, so definitely spend some time working with the levels. The range of gain is quite good. I can get a light overdrive from it all the way to a screaming distortion. I usually keep it between 10:00 and 11:00, and that allows me to play softly with a less noticeable drive, and play harder for a dirtier tone that stands out more. More expensive pedals may have more options, but for the price, this pedal is a steal. Seriously, the build quality is good; it's a metal chassis, and feels quite solid. The knobs do feel like a cheaper plastic, but I haven't have any breakage issues, and for the price, it's a nonissue (I mean seriously, even if I have to replace the knobs in the long run, it's still well worth it).rogue_danar
This thing takes up a lot of real estate on your pedal board, but all in all, for the price, it is worth it. It's a very good clone to the very old original Marshall guv'ner pedal from the 80's. And it is just as Big! If you are looking for a metal pedal, this is not it. This does a really good job at everything from a little crunchy blues, to heavy 80's style rock and roll overdrive. The very first thing you must do when you order this beast, is also order a quality 12ax7 tube for it. The one that is in it is garbage. It's a Bugera 12ax7C junk from china. Order any of the 12ax7 tubes. it doesn't have to be a C tube.I currently have a 12ax7A in it now. It's very easy to change tubes. There are reviews of it all over youtube and they all say the same thing. Change the tube. But once you do, it's a very very good pedal. When you take the cost of the pedal, plus a replacement tube, you're still way below the price of anything else close to it. And it performs better. It works like an additional preamp to help drive your guitar amp. I've used it on a Fender Super Champ XD combo, and an Orange Micro terror and a Acoustic brand solid state 100 watt head. (Acoustic brand, not an amp for acoustic guitar). It works great in all of them. It also accepts booster pedals in front of it really nice. I have put an Xotic boost in front and also a Soul Food with the gain all the way down and volume up (makes it a boost pedal). They both have worked great. It has a built in switchable noise gate that works great with single coil pickups to knock down the hum. If you have room on your board, I highly recommend this pedal over just about any other drive pedal under 300 euros. Really! It's that good! Dialing it in is about the same as a drive channel of a quality tube amp. A balancing act between gain and volume. It is highly responsive to pick attack. So when you are setting your knobs, pick hard and gentle and find that sweet spot in between. Has bass, treble and mid tone knobs too, just like a quality amp. Not just one single tone knob. What a great pedal. Case is extremely durable powder coated steel. I have been burned by cheap products from Bugera and Behringer in the past, and so I was a little leery of giving them another chance, but I am very glad I did. Youtube reviews is what gave me the courage to give it a shot. I am really glad I did. Order one today, and get an inexpensive JJ tube at the same time. No need to step up for a high end select Mullard or anything. Just something different than the stock tube that comes with it. Stock tube gives it very muddy mids and sounds almost out of tune in the higher frequencies. But with the JJ man this thing really rocks. and the eq knobs are highly responsive. How odd. This review was flagged for writing Big Mu** using the two F's 🙂 For the money, this is a really hard pedal to beat. It goes from mild and laid-back to wild and intense. The controls feel great…like as in excellent quality. This is a reissue of the original Big Mu** PI. I tried a Big Mu** PI with Wicker and forget about it. It hissed so loud in Wicker mode that I couldn't even here myself think and it got even worse with the tone switch off. And even in the so-called Big Mu** PI mode, it didn't sound anywhere near as good as this Rams Head does. And, the Rams Head is quiet compared to the BM PI with Wicker. One more thing, The BM PI with Wicker does not say anywhere on it nor in the included paperwork where it's made, whereas the RH BM PI clearly says New York City on the face of it…Vincent
The tone sweep is nice and there are some interesting spots because it is linear while kind of non-linear at 10 to noon and about 1-2 on tone control. I can't say why but usually I had purchased like more expensive versions of ehx pedals. That being said, I think people need to realize that these are quite accurate reissues and circuits, and just because it is an affordable pedal doesn't mean it isn't great.
Overall: Floats like a stone and stings like a nest of angry hornets! This box has the buzzsaw sound down pat. The fuzz is a thick, smooth, and consistent. I like this kind of fuzz in particular because it’s less fuzzy and little more distortion-like. The Tone knob has a really wide sweep from boomy bass to mid-range Hades. It has plenty of gain on tap and even sounds pretty good with the guitar’s volume rolled back a skosh.I’ve never used the original Green Russian Muff and have only heard them compared through videos online, so I can’t speak as to how they’re different/alike. I got it because I didn’t want to haul my vintage Black Russian Muff around from gig to gig anymore because it’s getting valuable and since it was a pretty jenky design to begin with, it’s liable to break with heavy use. That being said, the reissue Green Russian Muff has a different sound than an original V8 Black Russian Muff. It doesn’t sound as good to me, but it’s not so different that I wouldn’t use the Green Russian live in lieu of the Black Russian for the aforementioned reasons. One huge plus for the Green Russian is its pedalboard friendly size. The Black Russian is the size of an 80s metal lunchbox and took up an awkward sized chunk of the pedalboard. Now there’s more room for other unnecessary boxes (gulp)! One noteworthy ding for this pedal is how difficult it is to see the script on the top of the pedal. The words are printed right underneath the knobs, so if it’s kinda dark (which it usually is) and the lights are all in front of you (which they usually are) the words are impossible to see. Overall it’s a nice fuzz especially for the price. It’s noisy, but once the music gets rolling you won’t even notice it.Brad

I picked up one of these beauties after trying a bunch of units at my local GC. It was the last one I tried and I stopped right there. At the lower settings it gives me that great tube growl without having to turn my Amp up to earsplitting volumes. At higher settings the depth and saturation increase without becoming muddy or loosing definition. If you are a metal head you'll probably not want this one, but if heavy blues, rock, or covers are your thing you will love it. The crunch button adds a nice boost overall especially in the upper ranges without adding the harshness of other units. Built like a tank with battery or AC power and at this price it's a steal. I've even used it with my acoustic/electric with interesting results. Go get one!Donald

I went with 3 stars, but this isn't a bad pedal at all. It's classic, but MXR has since done much better. Once I got the Super Badass Distorion, I never used it again on my main board. Honestly for years I made the mistake of using the Distortion + as a main distortion. It functions much better as an overdrive through a dirty signal.
I'd recommend this pedal for a beginner or a hobbyist looking for a simple, user friendly distortion to beef up their sound. The more serious players, I'd say look further down the MXR line.Coffee Stain
This is a comparison between the (1983) Series 2000 model and the current Dunlop Re-release. In 1983 I bought the Dist+ after seeing it in the equipment lists of Alex Lifeson and some guy named Randy Rhoads. Upon hearing this wonderbox, I immediately traded away my previous (Ross) distortion pedal. After only thirty years, one of the pots showed signs of dying and I had to find a replacement. I considered Boss, among others, and read countless reviews. The Series 2000 was a superlative product with dual outputs; #1 was pure wet signal, #2 mixed the wet with dry signal. It had silent switching and was built like a tank. Finding a replacement promised to be a pain. I am grateful to the many reviewers of the Dunlop version who gave me the faith to buy the new model. I had to "daisy chain" the two pedals and swap back and forth to get "my sound" as the knobs on the two pedals are marked differently (Series 2000: Level/Drive, Dunlop: Output/Distortion). My efforts were successful and I marked the positions lest the knobs get bumped/moved. The Dunlop model allows for a higher level of distortion and has more gain than the Series 2000 so I am more than happy with the Dunlop version. Whether it will last thirty years remains to be seen but I wouldn't think twice about buying it again. My style is inspired by the psychedelic rock of the late 1960's and the Dist.+ gives a nice fuzzy Yardbirds sound. Overall this is just what i needed for my rig . you get what you pay for and i feel i got top quality.. And if you care about aesthetics of your rig will certainly look great. I never write reviews but after a bad experience with some other solderless wonders I think its time speak up. What could be better? this a cable that is easy to make ..looks great on your board and sounds clear. They look very well made.I think they will last a lifetime. That said ..I just got them and havent realy had enough time to test durability. What i can say is i was able to put them together and had my board up and running in a very short time. no problems at all with any of them. Just follow the instructions or go online theres a few realy good videos on you tube that will walk you through it..After i did one the others went together easy as pie.. As far as sound ..i dont think i have the best ear to be fair but i will say I can hear a difference in my rig.. Gone is the mess of cheap missmatched tone robbing cable mangle.. Im giving it a 6 only because i think for the price we should get 12 ends not 10. I have plenty of cable left over (what will i ever do with it)
I actually bought two of these kits to finish off a pedalboard and loop switcher. I watched an on-line video and got straight to it. The solderless connections are very easy to make and worked every time. This is in contrast to a D'Addario kit I got a couple of weeks previously, which is why I now own a cable tester . . . The George L cable is very thin, which is great when you are running 16 lines to a switcher. My only gripe is that I wish the ends were a little less bulky. They make it difficult to get pedals really close together to save room on the board. They are also a little pricy, when you think about 5 patch cables costing almost $20 each.John
Well engineered solderless plugs. Just remember to cut the ends off cleanly, de-crimp the cuts, so the cable looks round at the ends again. Place the cable end into right angle plug, push it in a bit, then bend the wire into the slot and screw the end camp down into the plug while holding the cable at 45 degree angle in slot. Lastly, place a rubber jacket provided over the screw end of the plug. This will somewhat secure the end screw to the plug. Then I recommend using a multi-meter to test for continuity at both ends of your new plug. That way… your certain that your plug connections are secure and not cutting too deep to the middle of the cable shorting it out. If you use these cables for a permanent pedal set-up they will work very well. However, I found that if I'm frequently moving pedals around on the board, pulling at the plugs and bending the cables, the connections may become loose over time, and you may have to re-build the plug connection. These cables take less space than Monster and Planet Waves effect cables. So if pedal board space is a premium, this is the best choice. Sound wise… there is more clarity in the top end. If you make them correctly, these cables are also very transparent and noise-free. Strangely enough… these cables sound much better than regular metal couplers and shortened soldered patch cords. These other cables must have slightly more resistance; hence, lesser sound quality. But, I highly recommend the George L cables…. It's night and day. Hope this helps.Nigel Moo Choy

I really like the Sparkle Drive. Tons of volume to drive any tube amp into submission. The clean/drive blend control really makes this pedal versatile. It can be an all out gain pedal, or a strong clean boost. The tone is a little dark, and has a little more "honk" than I normallly enjoy, but I have plenty of other places to compensate for that in my chain. Just a nice tight and focused sound. Very musical. Not too many extras here, but the clean/drive blend knob is a real treat. Seems pretty rugged to me, but the power adapter input has wiggled loose a couple times. Happens with lots of pedals, but then again, some never have this problem. For that, it gets an 8. Easily my favorite overdrive in this price range (and I likes me some overdrive pedals!!!)
That one line could sum up the entire review. It's a TS-808 clone with no surprises, except for the ability to blend in some clean tone via the Clean knob. I find keeping the blend below 25-30% is best, and I generally keep it at about 20%. Does it "sparkle"? Kinda. I like the tones I'm getting from it. Nice overdrive with some good string definition courtesy of the blend. As such, using the guitar volume knob, you can really clean it up.Another nice use of this pedal is as a clean boost. Turn up the clean knob and the volume knob and hit your other pedals or the front of your amp harder. Works great. I have it on my board with a Plexitube and a Full Drive 2 MOSFET, and it is a nice compliment to the others.
Nowadays you'll commonly hear about the Tubescreamer and the OCD being the ultimate OD boxes. As one person previously mentioned the Sparkle Drive has the same circuit as the TS808 (or keeley modded Tubescreamer) except for the simple fact that the SD can do more. The sparkle drive sounds better than the OCD (in LP mode) imo. The OCD's HP mode, however, is different and not comparable to the SD. The clean boost on the SD is surprisingly quite good! I used it all the time as a clean boost until I got an EP booster. Now I just use the drive. I don't really like to blend the clean with the drive, but to each his own. My one complaint is the knobs move way too easily. I wish they had a bit more friction. I haven't had any problems with the switch like some folks.Yffg
