Billie joe armstrong’s guitar tone on green day’s groundbreaking album dookie sounded dirty and punchy with the perfect amount of articulation to express the musicality of his fast, melodic riffs. he got that sound by running his signal through two heavily modified amplifiers—one scooped with a ton of gain and the other with a well-defined midrange. when it came time to mix the record, the band blended the two signals together in different ratios to match the vibe of each track. to celebrate the 25th anniversary of dookie, mxr are releasing the mxr dookie drive. it captures the sound of both of billie joe’s amps in a single pedal so that you can dial in your own variations of that famous dookie sound. they borrowed the amps themselves so that the mxr team could carefully analyze all the sonic qualities that make them sound so darn good. after much analysis and a/b testing, the engineers rebuilt the amps from scratch in pedal circuit form and fit them into a single housing. the high gain and clean gain sections each have their own controls, while the blend control allows you to mix them together just like green day did in the studio. if you want some extra scoop in the midrange of the overall output signal, just hit the scoop switch. the dookie drive isn’t just for green day fans—this totally unique pedal provides a full harmonic range of overdriven tones for a playing experience that is full of depth and dimension.

I bought this at Sam Ash in Houston with a gear trade in. I walked out the door with a good deal and an amazing pedal. The "Green Day" tone takes about three seconds to dial in. Even if you're not a fan of Green Day, I haven't been since the mid-90's, there are still A TON of usable tones. From a clean boost to full snarl, the Dookie drive handles high output pups as well as vintage voiced and lower output guitars. Full disclosure, it sits on my board with a JHS Clover pre-amp that is always on for me. Just on it's own into the front of a clean amp, the pedal has a wide variety of dirty, filthy gain on tap to give you just about any sort of punk, hard rock, or even metal tones you're looking for. Keep in mind, Green Day plays tuned down and the MXR retains full note clarity even when you're tuned down a couple steps. This isn't just a niche pedal, with it's mid-boost and blend knob, it actually brings something new to the table in the world of dirt pedals. Great, great job MXR.Jburd in Texas

Used dunlop ffm6 band of gypsys fuzz face distortion pedal.i'll be sad to part with this one. it's probably the one pedal that never let me down. used the right way, it can sound massive. i paired my fender hot rod deluxe with this and a jhs little black box (essentially an attenuator) and the pedal sounds frickin massive. the only reason i'm selling it is because i'm transitioning to an all midi board for presets.do note the pedal has some super glue type of residue on the back panel. you should be able to see this in the picture. definitely some sticky stuff on the back, but once you put velcro or dual lock over it you should be fine.

Very impressed with the Band of Gypsy’s fuzz – I have owner other silicon fuzz pedals (Fulltone 70, Roger Mayer Axis Fuzz) and this is my favourite so far – definitely nails the Hendrix Band of Gypsy’s sound, cleans up pretty well and works well with a Wah. I never really was a big fuzz guy nor one to buy any effects that claimed to be "Hendrix Signature" or be the next step to getting a Hendrix-like sound, but I am glad I made an exception for this pedal. Although it takes some work to coax them out, there are a lot of great sounds and tones lurking in the fuzz face past the advertised later-Hendrix fuzz tone and several sweet spots where the pedal is just wonderfully responsive. I would definitely recommend having an amp with a bit of warm distortion already going, ideally from driven tubes, when you kick on this pedal, the fuzz is a bit snarly which can get oppressively trebly if you aren't careful. Overall this is a great pedal though if you are looking for a very musical and dynamic fuzz or if you really just want that later-Hendrix sound.Ron

I use this pedal for solo boost, 3 band eq is nice. There is much more going on with this pedal. I keep tinkering with it on its own to push my tube amps. Get this pedal if you aren't cutting through the band during your solos. Find your rhythm sound and then when it comes solo time, stomp on the tank and you will cut right through! I'm looking at other Fender pedals as well I think they are the under dog hidden gem of pedals out there. My advise get it!! If u don't like it, you will easily find someone who does!!Greg R

I have an orig rat to compare it with, but too noisy after all these years. This has that smooth bite in the vintage position. The turbo position not so good. The level and tone knobs are only for pre-set. Had it over a year and use it sparingly on the pedalboard with 2 other ODs. This is essentially a clone of a whiteface RAT in a tiny Mooer package. Flip the switch to get even more staurated Turbo RAT tones. I'd always stayed away from RAT pedals because I thought they'd only be good for fizzy, compressed, scooped-mids tones. But if you spend some time with one, you learn that they can also do light overdrive at low gain settings. You can also get something like a traditional fuzz tone if you tweak a bit, but they're really at their best in lower gain settings through tube amps. The Black Secret from Mooer reacts the same way. The distortion knob is a little sensitive, but if you turn it way down (like <2) and play with the filter sweep you'll find some very usable "light crunch" tones. Perfect for fattening up a Tele or P90 without ice-pick highs or loss of presence due to cut mids/lows. Played through a relatively clean Fender-style tube amp, you can easily get the classic tones of mid-period Stones. It captures the "Brown Sugar" tone: light distortion with crisp highs, but without any loss of detail in the mids. Probably not a good choice for a Marshall-style amp, however. I am a home use player and wanted to run this in the effects loop of my 40 watt tube amp to get my preamp crunch without blowing out my windows. I quickly noted that the response was smooth and just what i wanted except that as i neared the full heel position to get the volume i wanted, i was getting some very loud popping from my amp which i worried might blow a speaker. I read online that other Ernie Ball vp owners had noted that there were loose solder contacts on the pot. I took a look and sure enough, one of the solder lugs was loose on mine too. The wire was soldered just fine but the lug was loosely crimped to the little board on the pot. I took the pedal apart pulled the pot out, crimped the solder lug better put it back together (which was a real pain to get the string wrapped correctly and back on the spring). With the pedal back together, it worked great and gave me exactly what i wanted with no popping. This is a great product but could really benefit from some better quality control.Jack
This volume pedal has a great, even volume swell. The addition of gain controls makes the volume pedal even more useful, however. When I'm playing bass, I sometimes want to increase volume for certain passages, but without the sudden change in tone that comes from an overdrive or boost pedal. This does that (I use a few different class D amps). Additionally, this allows me to have greater flexibility with my volume without needing to fiddle with my amp or bass' volume knobs while playing. On guitar, this can act as a nice, subtle boost that can push gain-ier amps (I use an Orange) into some sweet saturation. Great pedal.Derek P

Absolutely ripping fuzz pedal with a really thick and deep fuzz sound possessing great ability to sculpt the tone with the EQ control going from deep heavy to bright treble saw blade your ears off ripping fuzz. The core tone of the pedal is solid and all the variations you can get from that point all work. Can also handle palm muting with ease if you need that solid 'chunk chunk' sound…which most fuzz pedals can't do without getting too messy and washy or flubby. Having the blend control for the octave mode is just brilliant to dial in just the right amount of octave fuzz with the main fuzz tone for the given situation. First off, it Orange so I knew it was gonna be a cool vintage vibe. Super fun fuzz pedal, LED light glows blue when its on and the settings are really easy to adjust and dial in. The octave option was not what I expected. There is a red light that glows within the blue LED when it is on, which is kinda hard to see, and the sound only really cuts through on certain settings, otherwise it just ads noise. What I ended up dialing in sounded more like a citar (sp?) than a fuzz with octave. Not really what I was looking for, but Im sure Ill find some use for it. Also makes for a great warm distortion tone when run after a TS808. I would give it five stars but the octave option was a bit misleading. Still plan on keeping it, still really enjoy it.jerryo227

This pedal sounds very much like the original black case Marshall Guv'nor pedal. In fact, I have both in my pedal board and have them set up doe different amounts of gain. Very Marshally! Overall: First off, THIS ISN'T A PEDAL FOR EVERYBODY. The Blue Box is an ancient design – from around 1974. It's glitchy and works best on the A, D & G strings in the upper registers (above the 10th fret or so). And it isn't polyphonic – single notes only.Now, having said that, the sound it produces is truly unique to this pedal. Thick and wooly! I had the Boss OC-3 Super Octave and HATED IT. (It's best function is as a paperweight.) The biggest complaint I have with this pedal is that it isn't very loud, the volume drop when you engage the pedal is quite hard to miss. I solved that problem by running the pedal into an MXR Classic Overdrive. If you want to blow up a small guitar amp, this may be your ticket. I find it's best to palm mute the strings. Any extraneous noises interfere with the signal processing. I would indeed recommend this to a friend but with warnings. It may not work too well in a live setting but it's a great studio toy. Jimmy Page's solo in 'Fool In The Rain' is probably the best known use of this pedal but Wings guitarist Jimmy McCullough put one to good use on 'Wino Junko' from the 'At the Speed of Sound' album.Mark
If you're interested in a fuzz pedal with a lot of range, you should look somewhere else. If you want a pedal that makes fat sounding low-end buzzing noises, than this is the pedal for you. With the blend knob at 0 it has a very bland gentle fuzz that isn't very interesting on it's own. I can definitely say, if you're interested in this for a normal fuzz pedal, don't get it. The blend knob at half will get you a mixture of the normal fuzz with a mixture of the pedal's signature -1 octave buzz. I find having both octaves audible to be a bit distracting because the low end is very unwieldy and usually just sounds like mush underneath the conventional normal fuzz. With the blend knob at full you get the pedal in all it's glory, an 8-bit Nintendo deep bass buzz. Anything you play lower than the 12th fret on this setting will sound like static. Above 12, you can get some fantastic deep sounds that will really raise eyebrows among people who never thought a guitar could achieve those type of sounds. On it's own the volume and fuzz is pretty low, and I would recommend putting it though either an overdrive pedal or a distortion pedal to really make it pop. Don't get me wrong, it's a great pedal to have in your arsenal. It's essentially a bass pedal (something almost akin to the bass-line of Nirvana's "Breed"). It's limitations however make it a one song pedal (hence Jimmy Page's usage of it for one song and then throwing it aside). 70 isn't a whole lot to ask for a great song though. I don't regret buying it, but I'm not exactly overjoyed with it either. I usually bust it out to friends and they get a chuckle when I play the Super Mario Bros. "Underworld" theme. If you're tight on money, you're much better off looking at other fuzz pedals that for 10 extra will get you 10 times as many sounds. If you've got the scratch, I would recommend seeking out the DOD "Buzz Box". It was a custom pedal that DOD made for Buzz from The Melvins that basically takes the Blue Box and mixes it with a nasty distortion. They don't make it anymore and it's expensive, but it's a forgotten classic that blows this pedal away.

this pedal may be a bit too refined for fuzz nuts. it's a distortion. it beats out the fuzz face reissue for sure and beats out anything boss is putting out. does not stand up in sound to my dwarfcraft devices, copilotfx, and noisemaker effects fuzzes. oddly enough, this pedal reminds me of my boss hyper fuzz, a sound somewhere between the mode 1 and mode 2 on certain settings. it's more distortion than fuzz with a smooth breakup, no gate or splattery bit sounds here. i bought this when it first came out 'cause i needed a cheap octave up for covering blitz's "someone's gonna die" on guitar. but now that I play bass only, this pedal will still give me cheap nice grit with single coils and a pick with the eq set at 12 o'clock, octave turned off and distortion set at 0. keep the knob protector on it and it will last. i broke a knob off on my dano reverse delay accidently, wish that it had a foot guard on it!
This is a fantastic little fuzz box. I cannot comment on how it plays and sounds at gig-level volumes, as I have only ran it through my 5 watt tube amp at moderate volume levels. I didn't know what to expect from this baby when I plugged it in, but wow. Completely transforms your tone into a low end growly fuzz, or a shrieking startling high pitched swell of distortion and static, or anything in between. From watching videos online I wasn't entirely sold on the effectiveness of the octave effect, but it works wonderfully and can easily get those cool sounding jack white tones when you are playing notes higher than the twelfth fret. Strumming more than three notes at once doesn't play well with the octave activated, and turns into a mesh of static. But that is how most octave effects pedals sound, especially when paired with any kind of fuzzy gain. If you are searching for that "perfect", smooth, boring, tone look elsewhere. This pedal is disgusting and noisy and beautiful. This is my favorite pedal hands down.Jac
This pedal is simply amazing. Although you can drive the distortion and EQ to create an almost electricity-surging sound, I choose to keep them both low to get a deep, warm, HUGE fuzz sound. Flip on the octave switch for that Hendrix tone with the same settings and your guitar will literally scream through your amp, simply amazing. If you look at my Cons bar, you'll notice I said "Almost too much insanity." To clarify – The pedal has such an outrageous range of distortion and tone that when you flip on the octave switch, chords become undistinguishable static. However, that is not ENTIRELY bad. Personally, I could see myself using that noise for experimental parts in the studio, but not live shows. The octave switch is a very powerful poison, one that must be used strictly for one note at a time solos or riffs. Unless you're playing octaves, two harmonies will completely clash because the extra octave the pedal adds almost sounds like a ring modulator at that point. Regardless of this fact, the octave switch has proven to be one of the best features on this pedal and I adore it all the same. It says distortion, but trust me, it's a fuzz, and a great one at that. Put the EQ at about 9 o' clock, as well as the distortion level, put the level knob up to about 2 or 3 o'clock, turn your volume knob down on your guitar to about 7 and be amazed at the warm crossroads-esque fuzz. Literally, this is my favorite pedal I have ever owned. I've been eyeballing it for quite a few months, but I finally paid the money and bought it and it has literally exceeded all the expectations I had prior to listening to it in person. I heard a few recordings and demos of it, but none of them did this pedal justice. Simply put – it's a gem. Definitely keeping this one for as long as it survives the road, and I may even consider putting it in a metal case, but the seafoam green is almost too gorgeous to not use. I am an analog octave up (AOU) fiend. So when the this pedal came out, I had to try it. I tested it against a Green Ringer clone. Unfortunately, the Tentacle has an inherently harsh quality. You really have to adjust your rig's EQ to remove its ice pick sound. Other AOU pedals have a softer quality to them. While this pedal, with a fuzz, is bearable, I judge an AOU as a stand alone effect. Decent Green Ringer clones give more warmth, musicality, and overall practical use at about half the price.Sidewalk Sally

I love this pedal. The option to have one octave up and two down allong with the sry signal is great and creates a full sound. The tone is great, both the poly and classic modes, but the toneprint option is the real winner. Creating sounds and importing pre-created ones is a great way to dial in exactly what you want to sound like.
This pedal takes your playing to new lows! You can play with the settings and achieve amazing effects, the knobs are offering; 1 octave lower, 2 octaves lower, 1 octave higher, and so you blend it at your own taste. I've been looking for something to make my guitar sound like a bass for years. There have been several octave shifters, but mostly monophonic and producing ghastly warbling sounds. This subnup pedal produces a good sounding bass using just the sub1 control, and adding the toneprint smooth bass patch turns it into a really nice punchy bass that reflects the tone of the string you are playing so you can get anything from a bright twang to a deep boom just using your fingers and there is no noticeable delay in the conversion, you play a note and it sounds immediately – older pedals used to have up to a half second gap between playing and hearing the note. This pedal does heaps more than that, several YouTube videos show it off, but I didn't see any that showed it being used to replace a bass when you just need it for a few songs and don't want to bring two guitars with you. I haven't had a chance to play with the tone editor yet, but that promises even more variation. Great pedal at a good price.Robin D.

It's just a different kind of pedal. To me, it feels "amp-like." It gives your amp a new character and sounds great running a TS into it, or an OCD as more of a clean boost. The other thing I like is that it sounds great at lower distortion levels. It's just a different color and feel under the fingers. At high gain, it roars! Very controllable, tho. I've had this pedal for a year and a half. It does exactly what I was craving a distortion pedal to do. Pure sound quality. The distortion and output knobs give a good range of effects. If you turn up the output and drop the distortion, you get a rich, clean overdrive. Upping the distortion and dropping the output delivers that gritty, dirty distortion that you're likely after. And every combination in between produce satisfying variations. You can truly dial in your desired tone. One disclaimer: my pedal runs HOT. For example, if my distortion knob is at 2 o'clock, my output knob will need to be at 7 o'clock, or it's unbearably loud. When I switch to a different pedal after playing this pedal, the next pedal always seem quiet by comparison. But what can I say? This pedal is BA, and it delivers exactly what I wanted. And over time I've gotten a better handle on how to dial in the right amount of heat. I wholeheartedly recommend this pedal.Zaccoon

There is no unity gain on this. Even with the volume maxed it reduces the volume. I guess brown is a good color for it because it is muddy sounding too, lacks clarity and doesn't cut through a mix. I couldn't get a good sound out of it at any setting. Very disappointing distortion.Jonas

I suppose for a specific type of sound for someone this could suffice. I have other options and have used other inexpensive distortion units for decades. Just lacks Sonic character, dynamics and didn't add anything positive to my sound. I DO really like their volume/wah mini pedal…they are all well-made and terrific. I'm a studio engineer and have 7 different chorus pedals most name brand and are expensive but for the price.., this pedal cannot be beaten. Put this together with a couple of other pedals and you will never look back. Lush Setting is absolutely killer. Good quality construction and noise free. The Velvet Fuzz is a polished-sounding unit, even when it emits searing, soaring, sustaining, molten notes. The EQ curve is sculpted to avoid the wooliness of a Fuzz Face or the big punching-a-pillow lows of a Big Muff. The treble is smooth, almost dark, without the brittle rasp of a Tone Bender or the piercing shards of a silicon Fuzz Face. This is a sound that people who aren't ordinarily into fuzz could appreciate. And it has the modern conveniences — 9VDC input, LED indicator — sometimes lacking from purist fuzz designs. This pedal is great. If you think you want it, you want it. And I would recommend it. This can be used as a nice OD, Dist or Fuzz before you dial in the Octave at all. With the Fuzz and Tone down you can almost use it as plain Octave (with just a bit of crunch). But obviously, the idea is you dial in your desired amounts of Fuzz and Octave and create something special. The Tone knob is very variable, which makes for a great range of tones and intensities. The option of the up octave adds another range of sweet tones, especially for those leads. Finally, my favorite spice in the Sub Machine recipe, the parallel/sequence switch is a great touch that allows you to dial in a sweet, dual-effect tone and then gamble on how it sounds in sequence, where a whos-who of odd crunchy, glitchy and some downright sweet sounds live. All around a sweet pedal if you want Octave Fuzz and a pedal that can give you very cool sounds.Lucas
