Digitech Bad Monkey Overdrive Guitar Pedal For Sale (2024 Update)

This bad boy holds its own on a bass pedalboard amongst many other more expensive OFD pedals. It sounds great coupled solely with my Orange Twin Stroke boosting it into the bass riffage stratosphere. But where my Monkey really shines is stacked up in various combos with my SA Aftershock, Blues Driver, Titefuzz, warping my chorus/flanger, and also when I crank my 2 Stroke into true OD territory. This wouldnt be the only OFD pedal on my bass board only because, well, there will never only be one. This isnt freaking Highlander. And also because I tend to favor pedals that crank toward extremes. But this baby is my super glue, the one I throw into the mix to tie a screaming tube into a deep, echoey chorus or when I want a heavy fuzz growl to clamp down with some face shredding bite.crof.rya

So I was actually looking for 3 pedals : an overdrive, a rotary and a chorus. So could hardly believe it when I discovered this! Excellent tweakability on the overdrive, and huge fun stomping on the rotary/chorus for some seriously chewy tones when needed. Bonus is you have a rotary/chorus pedal you can also use separately. Great "klon" type pedal. Well built, durable and sounds great either as a slight boost or full overdrive. Makes an SG and a Marshall sing. Small, compact and pedal board friendly. 4 stars due to the PSU input can be slightly inconvenient for patch cable placement on a board and I have had one start to induce a weird noise (but got it swapped) and the new one has a noisy "Gain" pot – but it is bearable for now.Reviewed by Andertons Music Co.

i had one of these when i first started playing. i thought it sounded great back in the 90's . it still sounds o.k. but it could use more pick attack,and the highs are way too harsh and when you turn up the lows it cancells out a lot of the highs,so you have too compensate for that. it is best with really high gain pickups like a super distortion,then you get some decent pick attack,otherwise it is pretty hard clipping. i'd give it a 6 out of 10.10brooktrout

Despite the name, this is an excellent pedal for Metal. Don't expect a Nirvana sound from this. It's got a heavy mid-range focused sound, perfect for all your pinch harmonics and heavy chugging. The Loud knob is for Level, and it packs a LOT of volume. The Low and High knobs are bass and treble, and while they add some, they can't really cover up the heavy mid-range. The High knob can really be piercing, so use with caution. The Grunge knob goes from heavy distortion to really heavy distortion – there's not a whole lot of range. In spite of this, I like the distortion sound. I just didn't like the heavy mid-range, so I swapped out two capacitors and got rid of that heavy mid-range and it's become a more full-range sounding heavy distortion, more towards a rectifier-type distortion. I ordered in store and was told I'd get it 3-5 days. I ended up getting it after almost 2 weeks. Had the run around with fed ex. Fed Ex made the the entire thing a headache with their signature required delivery. I'm never home as I'm always working so it took 2 days to get it delivered after the initial day it was suppose to. Also, I ordered the original GREEN Maxon 808 and the order I got delivered to me was the new version of the pedal which is the Maxon 808X which is a red pedal. If it wasn't for the excellent updates on this pedal vs the original green id of returned and asked for my money back.JOE

Why 4 starts and not 5? If you know what a tube screamer does, then this does the business – 5 stars. It really feels like it's built to last, but this ‘80s style design means the pedal feels very heavy and ‘oversized’ compared to modern designs. Underneath it has built in rubber seating which means it is a bit difficult to attach velcro to fix to a pedal board. All this means that if you use it on the floor (‘80s) style then 5 stars, on a pedal board though 4 stars. Sound wise you might be shocked if all you do is compare the sound from a solo guitar with the pedal on and off – it sculptures the sound so that you notice a roll off of bass and treble … but in a mix or on stage the pedal is superb at highlighting the guitar. Just step on it for a solo and you get this wonderful midrange boost and suddenly your guitar just pop’s out of the mix for all to hear. All in all if this is your only pedal and you don’t play with a cranked tube amp you might be a bit disappointed. If you are combining with other overdrives and/or overdriven amps it can really bring out a clarity in the sound and is a great tool.David B.

Nothing is perfect so a 5-star rating on most anything isn’t very useful without critical review when trying to make a purchase decision so I would give it 2.5 stars if I could. The Trio+ concept was a good idea but in my view poorly executed and way over priced. Like many have already said, it is not generally easy to get a good result from the Trio+ Even after a few weeks of getting to grips with its functions. It’s hit and miss mostly when using it and mostly miss. “Sometimes” you can get “fairly decent“ results after multiple attempts but often the result is unusable. Their SDRUM product while not a looper provides better drum/bass accompaniment with much less fuss, is much easier to use and less expensive. The SDRUM coupled with their JamMan looper is far more intuitive and provides usable good results most of the time. I own both products and I use the SDRUM almost always instead of the Trio+. The trio+ just doesn’t live up to its cost or hype. Sometimes it works ok but just ok. If you get the results you want then maybe it’s for you but in my view I couldn’t in good faith recommend it to a friend so I definitely would not rec to a stranger. My advice is to get an SDRUM and if you need it get Digitech’s stand alone Looper to sync with it. That combo isn’t perfect either but far more satisfying and predictable to use. I do not recommend the Trio+ to anyone.Dennie

Wanna jam? No other players around? This dingus provides a competent backing band to solo or compose over. This gizmo does it all. Loop a phrase, play over it, start the band, and start on your extended musical forays. As satisfying a pedal as I've ever encountered. This is going to be a marmite product – if you only plays Chicago blues you are going to struggle to find a use. However if you enjoy playing many other styles, it adds to your tone pallet. Gut feeling is it will take practice to get more than swoop up/down Morello impersonations- it's like a new instrument at my feet. As pitch shifters go it has impeccable tracking and wealth of features. It covers several other Digitech products in one rather large red box – going to need a bigger pedal board. One feature is the warbleless chorus. All that richness without the whooshing. Another feature is the fixed pitch shifting which lets it be used as a virtual capo. I use this only sparingly, but it is so awesome to be able to transpose my guitar a half step up or a half step down in seconds to play songs in the key our singer requests while keeping proper fingering and not needing addtional, alternately tuned guitars. Does an awesome job tracking, but again, I only go a half step up or down, so the sound quality is still really good….sure beats the hassle of bringing several guitars and having to switch. We tune a half step down, and I use it for this purpose on few of the songs we perform at gigs. I have this first in line, right after my guitar, so it works extremely well for whammy and drop/raise tuning applications, but since it is not in an effects loop, the harmony option doesn't sound good. I run this into the front of my Soldano SLO100. I also love the whammy side on rare occasion, to throw in a wild noise ,,,or if I'm ever asked to play any Rage Against the Machine songs. Again, I use it very rarely/sparingly, but I highly recommend and I love having it on my board for when I do use it.Al

This pedal is terrific. Very easy to learn and intuitive. It has two sides: on the left, you have your whammy/harmony effects, with some nice chorus-y sounding detune effects thrown in for good measure. On the right, you have your detune effects where you can go up or down seven semitones, or a full octave higher or lower, with or without dry signal. This means you can instantly take your standard tuned guitar down to C, or B, or hell, even A if you're TRVLY CVLT. You can play an octave lower with dry signal and voila, you now have a bassline running underneath your guitar. I bought this pedal because I love whammy effects, and originally was going to buy the Whammy 5, but this is that pedal PLUS the detune effects. This is especially useful with Floyd Rose or other floating bridge guitars. We all know what a pain in the @$$ those things are to tune.kdbrown777

I've had two of these pedals die over the last couple years. The first one died one month after the warranty expired – when plugging it in, two LEDs lit up and it wouldn't pass signal. Contacted Difitech & they swapped it with another. 13 months later, the same thing happened. Digitech said someone from service would contact me but the never did. At this point I don't want it fixed and I don't want another pedal. Too unreliable.guitarz6

When I watched the videos about this pedal, I had to have it. Once I plugged it in, I was a little disappointed. It did what it said it was going to do. With some tweaks, I got the desired effect. For that feedback sound, it really only works best with single sustained notes. Chords or power chords work, but not as well. I'm not sure if this is just a novelty, or if this is going to be a useful tool. The best mode is the momentary latch ON with dry ON. This gives the ability for feedback on demand. I can see using it on solos or ending a song. The other options like momentary OFF or dry OFF, have that eBow sound. Personly, it didn't seem that useful for my style. One note on the sound. If you use the Freqout with a clean tone, you can tell what the pedal is doing. When the "feedback" is enabled, a harmonic tone drones over the dry signal then slowly takes over like a reverse gate. Ok. There are a bunch of different looper pedals available these days with a wide price range. I wanted a simple ( budget priced) looper to lay down ideas on the fly and groove over my rhythm. So..i put a microphone into this and record my rhythm into my Peavey mixer and jam away. I did notice that running this into my simple tube mic preamp (behringer w/ lower gain 5751) made a huge difference on the final sound. For the price of these little pedals…you can't go wrong. It even has a power supply included! Seems to function just like other loop pedals I have owned. Get your timing right ..start-end. Playback. Layer. Buy it!jammin_joemusic

Operations are not intuitive. Very frustrating, high learning curve. Too many possible setting selections to be done in a certain sequence. Reminds me of my first digital electric wrist watch instruction sheet. " Press 1, hold 2 for 3 seconds, press 1 once more, press and hold 1 and 2 once for each display item, press twice to delete, once more to set default…" Try to remember that each time you want to set the time or alarm. However—Once I learned how to use it, I totally love it. It's like a miniature recording studio. It will only accept a 1Gb or less memory card. Anything larger will not work. It has an input for both instrument and microphone. Most others only have one. Knowing precisely when to end recording takes a lot of practice. If not done exactly right, the playback loop will not be complete. I always start recording with the bass line, no vocals and always use the metronome, mic off. Once you're satisfied with that, you can overdub to your hearts content. I would recommend writing down exact initial startup settings for the mic and instrument volume knobs. That way, you can control recorded levels for vocals and instruments. If you are recording a song with dominant guitar presence, raise it a little before you start recording. If you want a soft harmony vocalin the background, lower the mic volume before starting. You cannot change individual track levels once they are recorded or overdubbed.ron6253

I've owned a Jamman Solo for a few years now and haven't spent much time with it for various reasons. When I finally got to spend some time, it was not that easy for me to use. I watched some You Tube videos on how to use it, which got me going faster than trying to read the manual, and I was overdubbing with ease on the factory pre-set loops. For some reason, which I haven't had time to figure out, I cannot create my own loop from scratch. I follow the directions, but I cannot even get started. The drum machine is hard for me to set at the right tempo. I know I need to read and reread the manual a few times to get there, but haven't been able to make the time. Another problem for me is being colorblind. I have trouble seeing the color(s) of the light(s) to know which mode I'm in, etc. So, today I decided to buy and try the JamMan Express XT. I can return it in 30 days if I don't like it, so I have nothing to lose. Other than getting my timing down, which I figured out fairly quickly, this thing is so easy to use, it amazed me. I created a loop, then added some overdubs and had such a great time with it in such a short time, I think I already know that I'm going to keep it. I wish the JamMan solo was this easy. I want to create some loops for keeps which cannot be done with the JamMan Express. I cannot wait to surprise my bass player next week when I can create a loop on the fly, add some overdubs, and we can jam along with it. I don't think us using a drum machine will hurt my creation of loops with this thing, it is incredibly easy to use compared to my old JamMan solo. Unfortunately, the JamMan solo is an older model and it does not have the sync inputs, but that won't stop me from using both, once I figure it out. I recommend the JamMan Express XT to anybody just getting started with using a looper pedal. The learning curve, mostly the timing, should not be too bad and as the Digitech Rep says, you can grow with it. If I find the need, I wouldn't hesitate getting another one. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because you can't save loops like you can with the JamMan Solo.joeprs

This is a great pedal if you are looking to add chord tones to your playing. This effect requires some imagination but if you are a "School Days" fan that is a good place to start realizing the possiblities. This is a solidly built and great sounding pedal but I realize it won't fit a lot of bass players styles. It works for me though!ChillyG

I own the original and this exceeds my expectations. I'm A little disappointed that digitech eliiminated the gain dial from the original model as it does drop your signal down a little. I also miss the push button selection, but this thing is way more sturdy. I love that they retained all the original settings and added a few more. Tracking is significantly improved over the original. 9 volt input is a welcome change. :D.Mike

I’ve played a lot of different overdrive pedals over the years and this is easily one of the best. I use it as my primary drive pedal on my board going straight into a 65 Princeton reverb set clean with a TS style pedal in front for a mid push for solos and it sounds fantastic. It will go from totally clean boost (very handy) to full on distortion bordering on fuzz with a very low noise floor (also handy). It very much reacts like a cranked valve amp with great touch sensitivity so when you pick lightly it cleans up and when you dig in it roars. I tend to keep it on the flat setting as I mainly use humbucker guitars but the phat setting sounds great with a strat neck pickup, just adding a bit of extra low mid thump. Really versatile, great sounding drive pedal that works well with all my guitars/amps. Great fun and highly recommended!Rhys L.

I had a Boss BD-2 modded by Keeley back in 2006. I will never part with it as it sounds so good and now a collector's item. Just pulled the trigger on Keeley's Phat Mod which after some play sounds even better. It seems to have less noise and more headroom(volume). I play a Fender Telecaster into a Carvin V3M. This Phat Mod sounds so delicious! My favorite setting is the phat switch on, level at noon, gain around 10:00 and tone around 1:00. At this setting you won't want to turn it off. as it is a like a volume-responsive clean boost that provides a little break-up as you play hard and/or increase volume. Also, this thing before another drive like the Keeley Oxblood… yummy. That is how I will use it. Bottom line: arguably the best transparent over-drive out there. I would consider having two on my board, one at the above setting and one with the drive up, phat switch off, for lead.Ryan C.

This thing is awesome. I understand that the sounds aren't massively different from each other but they are all different. Just shows that Tube Screamers sound pretty close to each other. The only thing I can say is that if you don't like this pedal then that's because you don't like Tubescreamers which is absolutely fine but that's not the pedals faultMike

Sound: So how does it sound? Well, just like a Tube Screamer. Having owned several over the years, the tone is exactly what you'd expect. The difference between the 808 and TS9 modes are quite similar (still great!), and the other modes offer distinct variations on the classic Tube Screamer sound. I'm currently running it through a Fender Tone Master Deluxe Reverb, as well as a Li'l Dawg Champster Special (Fender Champ tweed hand-wired clone) and it sounds fantastic. I really love the versatility and ease of use. Features: What was the most useful feature(s)? Well, it's gotta be the fact that you get nine (9) Tube Screamers in one! Want that classic SRV tone? Some badass ZZ-top style grind? Don't want to spend a grand collecting each of those vintage pedals? Well, here you go. True analog circuits with digital switching between them, and you've got an interesting range of tones at your fingertips. Ease of Use: It's simple to get great tones from the Bonsai. At the twist of a knob, you can go from classic Boss OD sounds, to classic Ibanez TS sounds, they're all there. There's even a Keeley modded TS sound. For anyone looking for a range of Tube Screamer tones, this is the be-all and end-all pedal, really. Get this one, and you won't need to spend another dime tone-chasing classic TS sounds. Quality: Well made? It's got a solid metal box, and the switch is provides solid foot feedback. The LED is bright, and let's you know it's on. Reliable? Hard to say, since I'm using it on a bedroom pedalboard that includes a Boss DD-2 digital delay from 1984. Will the Bonsai last 36 years like my DD-2? I guess I'll update my review in a few decades… 😉 Value: Is it worth the price compared to other products? Well, compared to buying nine different pedals, it's a fantastic value. I love flipping between modes and trying different tones at different volumes. You can get a *wide* range of tones from it, so it's a great product. I don't think there's another pedal quite like it on the market, so good job, JHS! Manufacturer Support: Didn't have to contact JHS for support, so I can't speak to their customer service. The Wow Factor: The appeal of this product? The sheer number of different modes in one single pedal is, well, unique in the market. Now that I've tried this, I'll be looking for similar products that can put several circuit designs in one pedal. Muffaletta – you're next on the list, baby! Overall: What can I say, except this is the first and last Tube Screamer pedal you'll ever need to buy. Nine (9) pedals in one – what's not to love?
