This way huge swollen pickle has probably been used live at 100 shows. it's one of the few constants that stayed on my board over the years. the outer shell is guarded by none other than science fictions greatest protagonist "r2d2" as well as his trusty side kick luke sky-something-or-rather. despite their loyal guardianship this pedal has taken a beating. the front writing is worn off, there's some velcro on the back and it's probably been covered in more beer than your average college freshman at their first kegger. despite this pedals sordid past it still functions as well as it did new. way huge cases are built like no other, the electronics are all perfect and there's even two little mini adjustment knobs inside. this pedal has a lot of character and i hope it goes to a home that uses it as much as i did.

I use this pedal with a 5 string bass and let me tell you, I can keep my deep presence in the low end while mixing in a very dynamic fuzz using just this pedal. With the cruch feature (essentially a compressor) I can get very even fuzz for long droning sustain and the scoop feature is very helpful to get that high and low spiked sound everyone loves on bass. An excellent pedal for a great price for any bass player wanting that extra fuzz tone without losing their low end. Unsure if this is for you? This is an incredible pedal. The tone is phenomenal. I have several distortion, overdrive and fuzz pedals. This pedal achieves the smoothest fuzz tone of all my pedals. The fuzz pedals I use are Fulltone '69, Fulltone Soulbender and have also used a '70. The best part of the pedal are the Crunch and Scoop adjustments. It really adds an entirely greater range of tonality to the pedal. The tonal range is very wide. You can get a great fuzz tone, or a fantastic distortion tone or get a Boss Metal Zone, mid scooped type tone. Another interesting distinguishing factor is the on/off switch. It is different than any other pedal. It has a nice feel when engaging. Highly recommended.gotommyko
On the whole, it's a quality pedal with some very good tones in it. True bypass and solid construction. But as I usually find with distortions that have more than three knobs, it has more than one sound I like, but they're not readily accessable. So I rate it pretty high for studio and recording application. But live, not so much. When I know there is a sound I like available at my feet I kinda want it right there. But it's too big and too expensive to put two of these on your board. And I'm not much into getting down on my knees during a set. Ya can't always get what ya want….waxout

I have only used one other fuzz pedal before (the fuzz face mini), so I have no other frame of reference to compare this pedal to. The swollen pickle has a huge variety of settings compared to the FF. I was looking for a fuzz pedal to get some Fu Manchu or Nebula like tones. This will do that. The swollen pickle does not like to be used in conjunction with some of my other distortion pedals though. Works great with modulation and delay pedals. It's built like a tank, it sure looks road worthy. I got it for a small board though, and it takes up a fair amount of real estate. For the tones, I guess it's a compromise I'll make. I'm happy enough with the SP that I'm sure I will eventually get some other Way Huge pedals.MCL

I've never been much into fuzz pedals and despite not finding more than one online demo for this pedal that I liked, I decided to give it a try. People seem to want to max out or all but max out the gain in most demos and they also seem to insist on running the tone knob way too high. But this pedal can sound really nice at a milder setting which is what I wanted. It also sounds fantastic going into the Overrated Special. You get a very convincing Eric Johnson lead tone doing so.Seth

I'm a metal guy at heart, so when I finally put the Metal Zone away and started building a grownup pedal board, a Tube Screamer was high on my list. I was particularly interested in this unit because of the size, since my beginner board probably isn't going to be very big. I plugged this little guy into my regular setup and was immediately blown away. If you've played some metal you know the setup: straight into a high gain amp, drive at 0, level at 10, and tone dialed in to taste. It made my Orange Micro Dark Terror, digital Bias FX rig, and even my sad old Marshall solid state roar, but in a much more defined way that never felt flabby or uncontrollable. I would recommend pairing it with a decent noise gate to trim down the hum, but that's just what electric guitars do when you crank the gain, and not a flaw of this pedal in particular. Okay, sure, it can do metal. I've also run this unit through a bunch of other setups and contexts. Through my Orange I definitely got very usable blues and classic rock tones by pulling the gain and volume back on the amp, and setting everything on the pedal around half way. I can even see potentially using it with the drive all the way up as a lead boost or to slightly break up a clean tone. This little thing is a beast for sure, and is pretty much perfect for my uses. It's not a transform your amp kind of effect, it's meant to compliment what your existing equipment already does. It has some specific things it does well, and it *really* nails them. #sweepstakesDan
Stop what you're doing right now. RIGHT NOW, and get this pedal. This tiny little monster sounds incredible and I am kicking myself for not trying any kind of Tube Screamer for my 20+ years of playing guitar. This literally sounds like a tube amp in a box. You can dial in the perfect amount of boost or drive without really impacting your guitar's true tone. If you push it all the way, it's almost in distortion territory, yet it retains warmth and picking dynamics…on the other hand it compresses nicely – like a tube amp. How does it do that? It's magic. I got this mini version because I'm building a mini pedal board, so it fits perfectly. Don't let the size fool you though, because it sounds incredible. The only drawback is that it needs an external power supply. Oh, and as an added bonus, this is made in Japan, and it shows. The switches, knobs, and inputs feel very high-quality. In my opinion, this is incredible bargain.Jamers
I collect Tube Screamers, and decided to get this for the collection. Soundwise, it works as a TS808; great transparent overdrive for stand-alone use but excels at boosting gain on an overdriven amp. Not as harsh or "dark" as a TS9, and a decent price. Definitely a TS to consider if you're trying to save some money; you definitely won't be missing out on the sound of the TS808. Also great if you want to add a Tube Screamer to a board, but need to save space. The only negative I can say is the Level and Tone knobs are difficult to see for settings, but that's true with most mini pedals. It doesn't take a battery, but there again, neither do most mini pedals. Construction is more solid than the Mooer Green Mile, and the TSMini is made in Japan (thought for sure it was Chinese). The price is great on these, but I'd also consider checking out the East River Overdrive by EHX; my current favorite Tube Screamer clone. As far as the Ibanez Tube Screamer line-up, this is seemingly the best value.Dave

I must to have pedal for rhythm guitar players. Very fat an saturated sound, perfect for riffs. I use with a vintage style Ibanez trough an clean tube amp channel, and it is amazing. The tubes are roaring with this pedal. I think it best suits for semi-hollow, vintage instruments with warm sound, cause combined with the Muff you will get a fat but enjoyable sound,. but with very a clean and bright instruments it will be more like harsh. The size is much more pleasant than the original Big Muff and its still massive. The tone on/off switch is a good feature, cause when you have your own EQ settings most of the time you dont want to mess it up with your pedals, but if you want, its still an option. Also, I recognized when its the tone off, you get more gain and headroom. The tone wicker give you more high-mids/presence. Useful when play muffed solos and you go higher in the fretboard.
Can't say much that hasn't been said already. What I can say after using this pedal for a year is that it is the best bigmuff out there. It's all about the tone wicker. To me it's like a vintage bigmuff switch. you flip it and holy dancing cows instant grit and velcro-like-texture fuzziness. you combo this with the right tube amp and Wallah! Siamese Dream tone. Cool thing is, costs much much less what you'd pay for a vintage (banged-unreliable-overpriced-oversized) V4-V5 bigmuff. Careful with the tonebypass, the thing is a 30db volume boost. good for saturated tubes I guess. in my opinion, it's as useless as it was 30 years ago in the V3 or V5 pedals. it does sement this version as a definitive throwback. both switches are there for a reason, EHX knew it, I know it and now you know it. How odd. This review was flagged for writing Big Mu** using the two F's 🙂 For the money, this is a really hard pedal to beat. It goes from mild and laid-back to wild and intense. The controls feel great…like as in excellent quality. This is a reissue of the original Big Mu** PI. I tried a Big Mu** PI with Wicker and forget about it. It hissed so loud in Wicker mode that I couldn't even here myself think and it got even worse with the tone switch off. And even in the so-called Big Mu** PI mode, it didn't sound anywhere near as good as this Rams Head does. And, the Rams Head is quiet compared to the BM PI with Wicker. One more thing, The BM PI with Wicker does not say anywhere on it nor in the included paperwork where it's made, whereas the RH BM PI clearly says New York City on the face of it…Vincent
The tone sweep is nice and there are some interesting spots because it is linear while kind of non-linear at 10 to noon and about 1-2 on tone control. I can't say why but usually I had purchased like more expensive versions of ehx pedals. That being said, I think people need to realize that these are quite accurate reissues and circuits, and just because it is an affordable pedal doesn't mean it isn't great.
Overall: Floats like a stone and stings like a nest of angry hornets! This box has the buzzsaw sound down pat. The fuzz is a thick, smooth, and consistent. I like this kind of fuzz in particular because it’s less fuzzy and little more distortion-like. The Tone knob has a really wide sweep from boomy bass to mid-range Hades. It has plenty of gain on tap and even sounds pretty good with the guitar’s volume rolled back a skosh.I’ve never used the original Green Russian Muff and have only heard them compared through videos online, so I can’t speak as to how they’re different/alike. I got it because I didn’t want to haul my vintage Black Russian Muff around from gig to gig anymore because it’s getting valuable and since it was a pretty jenky design to begin with, it’s liable to break with heavy use. That being said, the reissue Green Russian Muff has a different sound than an original V8 Black Russian Muff. It doesn’t sound as good to me, but it’s not so different that I wouldn’t use the Green Russian live in lieu of the Black Russian for the aforementioned reasons. One huge plus for the Green Russian is its pedalboard friendly size. The Black Russian is the size of an 80s metal lunchbox and took up an awkward sized chunk of the pedalboard. Now there’s more room for other unnecessary boxes (gulp)! One noteworthy ding for this pedal is how difficult it is to see the script on the top of the pedal. The words are printed right underneath the knobs, so if it’s kinda dark (which it usually is) and the lights are all in front of you (which they usually are) the words are impossible to see. I play an American Vintage 59 Strat and a Gibson 335 into a Mesa Boogie Lone Star. I use the amp's 2nd channel for rhythm OD and throw on. Tubescreamer for leads. I was looking for something to fill in between that clean and rhythm overdrive, soo went to the "transparent" and "klon" style pedals that have flooded the market. This pedal stood out due to the 3 band EQ – an extremely valuable feature to me, and I had great experience with Wampler so I bought it. It far over-performed and you can't get a bad sound out of it. I actually considered buying 2 – one for the transparent OD and another to replace my gainy rhythm tone. But one…or two, or three. It's now the core of my overdrive tones.cnelson88
I use it with a Les Paul through a Dr Z Jetta. By itself, it's an amazing transparent overdrive that is very responsive to my playing style. Depending on the genre I'm playing, I've used it as an "always on" boost on the edge of breakup as well as a tone-shaping lead boost stacked into The Dude. It has a great gain structure at higher gain levels, but because of how I stack my pedals, I don't use it at higher gain levels by itself. Guitar pedals can cost a lot of money, the original Klon is a shockingly expensive rare beast, so Klon clones are in plentiful supply and this just happens to be one of the best sounding overdrive pedals I've used. It's still quite expensive in comparison to some cheap, but very good, competition, but it actually sounds expensive. It has a richness that my cheaper Klon clone does not. To compare, I'd say the Tumnus makes the guitar sound balanced across the strings, whereas the highly recommended (online reviews) cheaper clone sounds slightly fragmented, you have to work harder to achieve a consistent sound. It also has a low end boost compared with the Tumnus, maybe to try to make it sound richer, but it sounds a tad boxy, something the Tumnus does not. I have on loan the Tumnus Deluxe, a more expensive and more versatile pedal, but I prefer the basic sound of this Tumnus, which has more body. Obviously it depends on what one likes and how that fits in with what and how you play, but I'm very pleased I upgraded from my cheaper Klon clone and glad I didn't go for the Tumnus Deluxe. I had to think for a while before clicking 'Yes' beside 'Is it good value?' because this is the second most expensive pedal I own (generally I try to research cheaper pedal clones before buying, someI've bought are brilliant, some are just good and I'm now in the process of bettering the good ones) and considering one can now buy some decent guitars for not much more than this Tumnus, it's a lot of money to pay for a guitar pedal, but it's a sad fact that great guitar pedals generally cost a lot of money. Overall: First of all, I never experienced the original, and I don’t know that I care. I often feel that light to medium overdrive style pedals sound really similar but each has a strength that isn’t as good as the others. I have a Princeton Reverb reissue because years ago I saw Howard of Catalinbread using their foundation overdrives into one and I thought it would be the perfect solution to the tube amp volume problem. It was. But back to the Tumnus, I had 2 other pedals that do sound similar to it without meaning to at certain settings. But for both boost and for drive the Tumnus is better. Setting it to unity yields just more of the great tone of my strats and S2 McCarty 594, just more harmonic content across the spectrum. If you drop the gain and turn up the output volume the tone not only gets louder but it smooths out the top end and makes bass richer and less flabby. Putting the gain knob around 1-2 o’clock is magic. It’s just a great, great almost crunchy tone and hitting it harder with your playing gives you the exact amount of drive you were trying for. Like it knows what you wanted. Then, if you play lightly it goes right back to beautiful and full cleans. It’s just a great little pedal that adds the perfect seasoning that I felt was lacking before. It’s a magic little mini, a total winner.
I've never played through an actual Klon pedal, but after watching the various comparisons online, the Tumnus was the closest thing out there, and was even beating out the actual thing many times during blindfold tests. The best way that I can put it is that it sweetens up the tone of any setup. It can go from just a clean boost to a lovely heavy overdrive. I've tried a few of the other Klon clones out there, and they just didn't do it for me, but after my experience with the Tumnus, it is now my favorite dirt pedal in my collection.CoopDbomb

I normally play flamenco guitar and have a very good acoustic amp I use for flamenco. I acquired an electric guitar, and needed a vintage overdrive sound, but I didn't want to buy another guitar amplifier. This unit does exactly what I need, providing a good range of distortion from mild to heavy, transforming my acoustic amp into what sounds more like a vintage tube amp. My wife likes the sound of the acoustic amp and TO800 combo, which surprised me because she usually doesn't care much for the sound of electric guitars. I'm very happy with this unit. I got this pedal to use with a low gain amp at rehearsals. I didn't want to drag out my regular board or take it apart. I was looking for an inexpensive overdrive pedal. I saw this , read the reviews and said what the heck. I actually got the pedal for free as I had enough reward points. I regularly use a Boss Blues Driver which I have had for over ten years. I got the pedal and hooked it up and was pleasantly surprised. It is very comparable to my Blues Driver. It accepts both my Dunlop nine volt adapters and my One Spot power supplies. The case is metal. I may even incorporate it into my regular board for another degree of overdrive. If you are considering trying an OD pedal, you can't go wrong with this. I am a semi professional guitarist with over fifty years of playing experience. I use tube amps and mainly American Fender guitars. I know what I'm talking about. An OD pedal is not the same as a distortion pedal. The purpose of an OD is to push you're amp to a higher gain level than it may be capable of or to give you a little more guts when playing a lead without changing the settings on your amp. The Good: The sound of this thing is great for grimy, doom metal. It's easy to use, sounds great, and has a decent depth of customization. The Bad: You have to press in the hinges on the pedal itself as the battery is under the pedal. It was scratched up before I even got to play it because of this. There's no reason the manufacturer could not have just put a small door in the bottom of the unit like every other pedal I've ever used. Also, the first time I changed the battery, the negative wire pulled out of the connector. I've decided that since I already bought it and like the way it sounds, I'm going to jury-rig a battery connector outside the main body. It'll look like cr4p, but I'll be able to use it without damaging it further and won't have to spend extra for a 110v adapter. I had read about the difficulty changing the battery, but figured I'd give it a shot because it's got so low-priced. Had I gone to a brink and mortar store and seen it, I would not have purchased this unit. If someone already has an adapter they plan on using with it, by all means do so.Russ G

Experienced pedal users may have effects that are superior. But I'm a low-rent guy in a high-stress world, with no prior experience in pedals or tone shaping, and for me this is a gem. Instant therapy. A lot of fun, finding sounds that I've heard on songs and always wondered how people made them. I don't find it to be very noisy at the volumes employed in my apartment (duh), and a noise gate in my chain makes it virtually silent. The build quality is not an issue for me, at least so far. You get what you pay for. This pedal is fun to experiment with. Some effects are really good, others are not. The Flanger needs a high-cut filter. The Phaser is kinda weak and it sucks your tone. The chorus is really good. The delay would be really good, but it won't go slow enough for me. So I don't see myself using it. I don't like the Tremolo effect, but it seems to work fine in this pedal. The Pitch Shifter was my favorite effect in this pedal. It is sensitive to adjustments, but once I had it carefully dialed-in, it sounded great. The Level knob works great. It seems to blend the original signal with the selected effect nicely, without dropping the volume or sucking your tone. I use this pedal in the effects-loop of my amp head. The two parameter knobs seem to have a pretty big range. They go from subtle, to really wild. It takes some time to carefully adjust them to get the sound you are looking for. The knobs feel stiff when you turn them, which is nice. They will stay where you set them. Construction is plastic, so this pedal is not too durable, but it will be fine for home use. Overall, this pedal is great for the price. It has plenty of use-able sounds in it, but some of the effects are not perfect. This pedal would be great for new players, because it allows them to experiment with different effects to see what they like, and it doesn't cost much. I use a 1-spot power adapter with it, which works great.
This is a very good unit for it's price. I purchased it for my "little" amp when I go to friends place's to jam. My "big" amp has the same effects in it & are better. However, it does do the job I purchased it for. It is well made in China under German supervision. The Germans don't do rubbish products & that's what made me check it out. I'm not complaining about it at all, this is one of those "horses for courses" items. I have another pedal that does what this one does & more but it cost three times what this did. I track usually 4 rhythm tracks, two of the exact same then two more of the same but with accents or harmonies etc as my main rhythm and I like it to be tight and sound like one guitar performance, the variations and accents and harmonies blend and widen the sound, also I use hard panning and other panning to make the guitar sound huge. With the guitar sound very close performance wise and tone/distortion quality wise, I find that it just sounds like one massive performance and the listener perceived it as a Randy Rhoads kind of singular performance. I'm the only guitarist and I play complex chords, this also let's be play parts of the chord separately for more even intonation and harmonics definition. It goes towards the big sound, I kind of learned from Alex Lifeson, Rhoads, and Hatfield and Wolf of Accept this approach as they all do the main rhythms and it sounds tight and huge. Mimiq helps me get the 4 tracks with only two performances and it adds natural sounding random variations that do what the multitrack stacking of individual performances does, it doesn't just uniformly cancel out all the interesting variations, which can happen if you just copy the same track and reamp. It does what I wanted to do, with less than half the effort.Mindcage
This replaced the signal splitter on my board with the added benefit of actually making my stereo sound better. I have it right after my tuner and it splits into an HM-2 LHP on the dry side and a Blackened Fuzz on the wet "double" side. Makes my stereo rig sound better. I only use the 1 dub mode, so Dry and 1 Double L/R and I use it pretty tight, just enough to make it sound "different" but not sloppy. Does exactly what I had hoped it would do.
Bought to run a slight delay to a second amp more so than the "double track" thing. But actually this effect seems pretty decent. Did i immediately notice you can get phase issues? Yes of course. Did i get some of that notorious left right jump thing? Yes. But it seems to relate to using the pedal at the limits of what its happy with. For the price this thing is a keeper…because otherwise im having to spend big dosh on either the 30ms or the Deco. Buy this but be prepared to accept some limitations and bug bears. To use a fine old term 'bang for the buck' this is definitely it. If one understands how these work this one delivers the goods. I am easily able to get the full envelope range using a stock Strat. This pedal is cool but kind of strange. The overall effect is very mild through clean instruments but is very noticable with distortion. It boosts your signal a bit which will cut your volume if you switch it off in the middle of a song. The white knob does reshape your mid range tone which can either add an extra layer to shape your eq or diminish your eq altogether. This knob always reshapes your tone in this manner regardless of what the other knobs are at. One major benefit to this is that it seems to polish your tone a bit. The difference was extremely obvious when I tested this through my full bore pedal. This is worth having but it's more of a secondary effect pedal. If you need something to go with your distortion/reverb pedal combo and don't want something generic, this is a good choice.gei_57

Overall: I really wanted to like this pedal because of its fuzz effect, which is very good. The distortion was O.K. but not the best, although it is workable. The biggest problem with this pedal is the fact that the clean mix does not work 100%. It is too slight and does not give you much room for keeping your bass fundamental tone. Your sound loses its bottom end. Not good!! I believe this is a huge mistake in the part of the person who designed this pedal because it is marketed to bassists. If a bassist cannot get a strong low end s/he will take that pedal and get rid of it; rightfully so! Which is what I did.

Let's start with this, gobs and gobs of gain and mids are at you neck and call with this pedal. It goes way past what you can get with a Plexi, probably up to a JCM 900SL-X level of gain, but not that modern, super saturated metal you hear today. It has lots of mids, thanks to the "mid" control, more than you need, and all the controls have quite a lot of range to them, so dialing up a Marshall sound you like should be easy. The knobs/pots feel really, really cheap, so I could see a missed stomp breaking off a knob or two – not great! But, it is an MXR/DOD size pedal, so you'd really have to have some big feet to miss the button that way. That said, it's not going to break the day after you get it. It can also run off a 9v battery with a door on the bottom to access it, so no screwdriver needed. I like it.Scott

Ich habe mir das Kangra aufgrund eines Videos geholt. Supergut ist der Envelope Filter,der aber leider ein wenig Bässe klaut. Bei Gitarre ist das verkraftbar, beim Bass nicht so, da fällt der Druck ein wenig ab. Ich bin kein Fuzz Typ, da dieser aber separat schaltbar ist finde ich das okay. Der Filter ist eher oldschool, keine Ultraspacigen Settings dabei, aber das habe ich gesucht. Die Qualität des Sounds ist sehrgut!
Très très bonne pédale de fuzz octave. Un peu dans l'esprit d'une super fuzz mais avec son caractère propre (ce n'est pas une copie de super fuzz mais une cope de Kay fuzz). Très agressive, surtout dans un ampli très clean. Je la stack dans tous les cas pour éviter les aigus trop agressifs et ça fonctionne parfaitement. La partie filtre me satisfait moins, soit trop peu présente quand on la stack avant une OD ou trop agressive quand ont ne l'utilise qu'avec la Fuzz. Important de noter que je ne suis pas un grand fan des wah et auto wah.
