This is the amazing Boss DS-1 distortion pedal, loved by all who use it. Amazing value at just £55. I won't bore you with stories about how robust it is, because we all know Boss equipment lasts forever. It looks and feels great, but most importantly, sounds incredible. I play punk rock, and with my Gibson SG Special, plugged into my Marshall JCM 900 this delivers exactly the sound I want. I loved that in the manual it gives example sound setting, one of which was British Punk. That just made me smile. I knew instantly it was right up my street. Oh, and if you're into electronics, this thing is made of pin-through-hole components, so it leaves it open for a good bit of modding. There are plenty of guides for that online. Now I don't hate it, but Its not my first go to pedal. I like the more modern BOSS "Metal Core". It is however like all BOSS PEDALS built like a tank, extremely reliable and a great first pedal. For the money, this is a super value. I found that I like it for "Gain Stacking" in combination with the BOSS MD-2"Mega Distortion" and a few other pedals. Even two DS-1 DISTORTION together improve the performance to me. Overall it's not terrible and I see were for some it could really be a price but I lean towards Heavy… Heavy Metal and for that it's more a corvette when you need a Lamborghini. I have a 60w Fender Deville amp. Lovely clean sounds straight from the amp but couldn't really use the overdrive channel without the volume getting to an inconsiderate level at home. This pedal has addressed that issue really well. This pedal now provides me really raunchy distortion while providing a greater control for volume. The pedal also provides a nice boost in changing between a clean channel directly from the amp and then through the pedal. Very pleased with this investment, particularly for the price. Sound: OK, so the pre-set programs are hit and miss for me. But that had to be expected, as I am not plugging a guitar into it, but rather a Korg RK100-S2 keytar. For obvious reasons, the cleaner patches, and patches designed around arpeggios sound decent, while the shredding metal patches sound like ass. I'm sure they would both sound good if I was hooked up with an actual 6 string. Features: The most useful feature as far as I'm concerned, are all of those knobs all over the front of the unit. They make it so easy to dial in the sound. Especially when compared to the all digital products like the GT-1. I had a GT-1B last year, and it was aggravating to modify sounds on the fly. The other most useful feature is the Tone Central app. OMG!!! Last month, I trashed Korg's design decision in their app for modifying the keytar's sounds. The window can't be resized, the lines of text are nearly microscopic, it isn't REMOTELY intuitive to figure out how to re-write the patches. Boss' Tone Central app is the EXACT OPPOSITE of all of that. Full screen, each effect section is on screen alone and has 3 different ways to modify the settings. Get things the way you want, name your patch, and click "write," then choose where you want it saved, and click "OK." It couldn't be simpler. Ease of Use: If the preset patches are hit and miss, the "manual mode" is why I bought this board. The keytar really needs some effects to come alive. This board is simply a placeholder until I can build a quality keytar/synth specific pedal board. Compression, delay, and/or phasers can add a lot of depth to my sound depending on what I'm currently using. Those dials make it super easy to get the sound right quickly. It does sort of suck that they are on the floor, but how could that have been avoided without bluetooth and a phone app? And, if that was the case, I wouldn't have bought it in the first place! Quality: I bought this "blemished." My guess, based on the condition of the box that the factory shipped to zZounds, is that this took a fall off of a shelf in the warehouse. One end of the box was mangled badly! Thanks to Boss' attention to detail in packaging, and legendary build quality, I got this product without a scuff, scratch, or dent for 20% off. I like that build quality. (Feel free to play football with some of those synth specific stomp boxes guys! *wink-wink*) Value: Before my fretting hand got too badly damaged to play bass anymore, I wanted the bass version of this product. I believe that it was discontinued, and I missed my chance. I got the GT-1B but didn't like working with it. When I saw that this was available, I didn't hesitate to put it into my cart. Only then, after the fact, did I realize that it was in "blemished" condition. I almost went back and put a new, full priced one in my cart simply because I didn't want the hassle of potentially returning a broken product. So, yes, I do believe this is worth the normal retail price. Manufacturer Support: In the 12 years I've been playing, I've owned several Boss products from tuners to metronomes to multi effects pedals and I have NEVER had to reach out for support. In my estimation, that's the BEST form of customer service! The Wow Factor: G.A.S.! I can't play guitar a lick. But I've bought guitars in the past simply to hang them on the wall. I can't say that I would ever buy THIS product if I didn't need it. But I'm sure that it will still find some place in my home studio, even after the actual pedal board is complete Overall: An easy recommendation for the guitarist on a budget. Depending on one's needs, stomp boxes and pedal boards can become quite pricey. Between this, the Tone Central app, and the hundreds of additional patches available there, if you can't get the sound you're looking for, the problem lies mostly with you.
I have been buying and selling multi effects for many years. I loved them all, even the silly ones such as the RP50, 505, ME30..too many. I guess my favorites were the Korg AX3000G(which I thought was ahead of its time) and the Digitech RP500(awesome reverbs, mods and filters),and even some Pods for their amp sims too. Yes yes.. they all had their short comings in different avenues.. Boss reliability is were a part of Ny early playing days since the 80s..and to this day, I use Boss single pedals almost exclusively as my main rig. I just love the simplicity of their individual pedals and this unit is the only one that comes close in terms of the logic of its settings. I love KNOBS, and the ME80 has plenty to go around with. SIMPLICITY is the key . No more scrolling up n down a screen on the floor which I can hardly see. Now is the ME80 the best sounding multi-effect out there? No sir! With all the current technologies which can produce units such as The Kemper, Fractals, Boss GT1000, and other high res IR capable units from Zoom and Line 6(including some very capable Chinese newcomers), the ME80 can be seen as kind of outdated to some, The ME80 is certainly not what the top guns use these days, especially when occupying an arena concert stages I'm sure(but I bet they still use one or two boss pedals in their rig lol)..Also, Let's not forget that the ME80 initial introduction day to the world was just about eight years ago.. shall we? But guess what, it's still alive and kicking! And that is exactly why you still see it here for sake in 2022 ar least until Boss comes out with some new monster that can handle the GT1000 chipsets and adding more KNOBS to its chassis. The ME80 is gorgeous, it sounds good, and it has a personality. It also has more to offer than its predecessors such as the ME50/70..I mean, the addition of a separate footswitch for reverb,EQ and a simple patch recall?? I would recommend this unit for any small club or a tight rehearsal space for a quick setup and a speedy wrap-up after a show, when it's finally time to go home, no patch cables required.I AM KEEPING THIS ONE FOR MYSELF! I don't want to program guitar effects. I don't want to read cheesy names for effects that I can't immediately recognize or understand. The young people like that stuff but I am old and old school. The ME-80 gives me my old stomp boxes but grouped on a modern platform. It is basically foot pedal controlled with a very nice expression pedal and 8 on-off pedals. The foot pedals work flawlessly. But the thing that makes this unit awesome is the knobs. You can turn a knob, set a value and get instant feedback on what you did and look at it anytime to see what it is set at. If you know stomp boxes then you know exactly how this thing works. It has by my estimation about $4K worth of stomp box effects and amp emulations. Whether you want an old Tube Screamer or a Big Muff Fuzz. This thing has it. And it has many new stomp box effects like the amazing Tera Echo, Harmonist, Freeze and a Looper. It has just about every effect you could want and you can play multiple effects at the same time. As far as I am concerned this is the greatest thing since sliced bread. And I am an original POD user. I still plug into the POD now and then. But the POD is history. The ME-80 is what I like today. I even commissioned a guy to build me an angled stand to boost up the knobs and pedal to make it easier for me to dial in changes. I had it painted orange to match my Orange Crush 35RT amp where I port the ME-80 output. Lastly, if you insist on being a programmer, they let you do that as well and offer a ton of presets online. You can hook up by USB to your computer and program away. Brilliant. The one down side… you have to buy an AC/DC adaptor for $30 or use up a lot of batteries. Overall: I have more overdrive pedals then I realistically need but my selection of distortion pedals has always been disappointing for my taste, just never the right tone regardless of the set up. I figured this pedal wasn’t too much and saw good reviews for the pedal historically. Yes there are differences from the originals to the model we have today but this distortion pedal is ridiculously versatile. The distortion pot is very broad and goes from a subtle O\D to a full faced fuzz and then when you sweep thru the filter, that’s where you see how versatile the Rat truly is. Is this a pedal geared towards the modern metal sound? Probably not. Is this pedal a good product for the price? Absolutely! The ease of use with the three control knobs just makes this pedal a great first buy or for those, like myself, who seemed to keep coming up short with distortion pedals, a truly simple and reliable tank of a stomp box. The Rat pedal is a classic and was my first pedal in 1986 when hi gain amps werent affordable to 15 year old kids. That pedal was mean ! It had the original lm308 chip and gave me the Kill Em All sound I craved. Fast forward to 2020 and the pedal has not changed much. Its mean and can give you fuzz to mean hi gain rhythm and violin line like sustain on leads. For $69.99 it is affordable and awesome. Cons : you cant power this pedal with a standard Boss power supply. Its either buy a Rat power supply/wall wart or run it on batteries. Also, the battery compartment is plastic and not as tank like as the rest of the pedal. The changing of chips does make the pedal lose some of its magic. The new chip is fine but I do miss the lm308 and maybe its hype Im falling for. It likely is. So what can you do ? I sent my pedal of to Utah to be rehoused. The pedal itself is hard to adhere to a pedalboard bc it is so heavy and awkward. So mine is being put in a more pedalboard friendly housing. Also, all the components like in and out jacks etc will be replaced/upgraded as well as some cheap components inside the pedal. You also get the lm308 chip. Hell yeah ! For $150 you get a massively improved pedal. Do you need to do this ? No of course not. But if you want the best Rat pedal youcan get ( which in the new housing also allows being powered by a Boss style power supply via wall wart or pedalboard) then the mod will be a fun way to modify an already smoking pedal.swampdonkey90
This is a great pedal and is very versatile. It can go from an overdriven tube amp tone at low gain settings to very thick heavy distortion/fuzz tone. I like to set the gain low to a nice overdriven tube amp tone and then have my boss SD-1 in front of it pushing the pedal harder. It gives it a nice 80s hair metal, Marshall JCM800 type tone. The tone of the pedal is great and it is very versatile and a good deal. It will stay on my pedal board. The other nice thing is is it's extremely easy to use with just 3 knobs and very easy to find a great tone. When I first got this pedal I didn't like how bright it was but that where the filter knob comes into play and you can roll off the brightness to match the guitar and amp you have and get a great tone. This allows you to play it on bright and dark amps a like. I use it with a Gibson Les Paul standard with burst bucket pro pickups into my 65 reissue fender Princeton reverb and I will also run it into my Boss katana MKii 50 watt. It’s an Ibanez tube screamer, so of course it’s wicked. Easy to use, bombproof, and gives you that extra bit of oomf for a big solo. If you want pure dirty blues then I’d go for the 808, but the TS9 is great for rock, it’s got a slightly brighter more aggressive tone. These things really shine with a Strat, but they sound just as great with whatever guitar you’re using, and they are just loads and loads of fun. The tube screamers are, I think, a foundational building block of getting a good blues tone out of your rig. Obviously, your guitar and amp will have a big impact on your sound, but this pedal can help you find that special sweet spot of tone. Being an overdrive pedal rather than a hard distortion pedal, do not expect the long singing sustains you would get from a traditional distortion pedal, but more of a crunch, an added grit. I think the pedal will interface well with a distortion device like OCD, and spatial pedals like MXR Carbon copy, and TC electronics hall of fame… if you can afford them… they are expensive… the price you pay for quality. I'll make this short and sweet. This thing is packed with sounds and there is a natural delay that seems to be missing with other delay pedals. My only complaint is not the product but Sam Ash the selector knob and mod knob get stuck when I press down. They have gotten expensive over the years (along with everything else) but it's history and reputation speaks for itself. I've had various Boss pedals over the course of 30 years and I have never, ever, not once had one that failed or malfunctioned. I wanted a cheaper alternative but what made me commit to this pedal, once again, was it's true bypass/buffer capabilities. I'm using this one differently than I've customarily have used them in the past. This is to be used in a pedalboard dedicated to an electrified Kalimba (pictured below). I'll be wiring it up soon. Perhaps EQ is not the most exciting of pedals compared to other effects, but this really does make an enormous difference to your sound and help you get the best from the rest of your gear. Boost the mids to stand out from bass. Scoop the mids and boost bass/treble to sound like Metallica. Use the independent Level control as an overall volume boost (or limit – but who wants that?!) Brilliant on-the-spot tone-shaping tool. Opens up virtually infinite sound possibilities, very handy when stacking overdrives with some or a lot of overlap in their tonal voicings. Also great for approximating the tones of completely different styles of pickups. Small adjustments tend to work best, a subtle nudge of the slider in the problematic frequency band is often all you need. Equally, you can throw that out and morph the tonal profile to something incredibly different. After my tuner it's hands-down the most indispensable pedal on my board. Allows me to shape the one tone control on the Pro Junior IV into even more harmonic/percussive/airy/creamy/bell-like territory. I was looking for a boost pedal to drive an old Gibson GA-25 with a Strat. The Archer sounds above and beyond. It has plenty of volume to drive the amp and setting the gain between 10 and 2 and rolling off the treble smooths out the crunch while still maintaining it character. Used it with a Plexi 100 and a Twin Reverb as well as a Rickenbacker, Tele, and Les Paul with the same result. The Archer sounds fantastic and each amp and guitar sounds like that amp or guitar. Worked the same on other pedals. Used it to drive an OCD and it the perfect bump without having to use an amp with complicated switching. No noise from the pedal while toggling on or off. Treble knob is super useful to smooth out or add clarity. It was really easy to dial it in and there's a pretty wide sweet spot. It's super responsive to picking and fingering. I kinda want to buy another to have an Archer drive an Archer. Would that be weird?Nickname
The pedal is small and therefore pedalboard-friendly but is still built like a tank. The knobs and switch feel totally quality stuff, the chassis is rock-solid and good looking. This pedal can be used, just like a Klon Centaur, as a clean boost up to a mild unique sounding overdrive. It gives you plenty of volume and headroom (you generally have to keep the volume knob close to zero if you want to match the bypass volume) and the Gain control is very accurate and allows you to shape your tone just as you desire. It is a great blues or rock pedal and gives its best if put on top of a tube amp that's almost breaking up but you can still use it, as a regular drive pedal, in front of a clean amp and it's guaranteed to sound better than most of the amplifiers' internal gain stages. Not a cheap pedal, in line with its main competitors, but definitely worth the price. If you want a Klon-like quality pedal that really gives you the Klon feeling without destroying your wallet, the Archer is a perfect choice.reptile_breath
I used heavy fuzzes for many years, I decided a few years ago to switch to something different. Been switching between the germanium ocd and the Xotic BB preamp last few years. The Archer does what I was looking for. Sounds great with my guitar volume slightly turned down. I've never used one of those real klons. But I now can understand why everyone likes em. I normally play flamenco guitar and have a very good acoustic amp I use for flamenco. I acquired an electric guitar, and needed a vintage overdrive sound, but I didn't want to buy another guitar amplifier. This unit does exactly what I need, providing a good range of distortion from mild to heavy, transforming my acoustic amp into what sounds more like a vintage tube amp. My wife likes the sound of the acoustic amp and TO800 combo, which surprised me because she usually doesn't care much for the sound of electric guitars. I'm very happy with this unit. I got this pedal to use with a low gain amp at rehearsals. I didn't want to drag out my regular board or take it apart. I was looking for an inexpensive overdrive pedal. I saw this , read the reviews and said what the heck. I actually got the pedal for free as I had enough reward points. I regularly use a Boss Blues Driver which I have had for over ten years. I got the pedal and hooked it up and was pleasantly surprised. It is very comparable to my Blues Driver. It accepts both my Dunlop nine volt adapters and my One Spot power supplies. The case is metal. I may even incorporate it into my regular board for another degree of overdrive. If you are considering trying an OD pedal, you can't go wrong with this. I am a semi professional guitarist with over fifty years of playing experience. I use tube amps and mainly American Fender guitars. I know what I'm talking about. An OD pedal is not the same as a distortion pedal. The purpose of an OD is to push you're amp to a higher gain level than it may be capable of or to give you a little more guts when playing a lead without changing the settings on your amp. The Good: The sound of this thing is great for grimy, doom metal. It's easy to use, sounds great, and has a decent depth of customization. The Bad: You have to press in the hinges on the pedal itself as the battery is under the pedal. It was scratched up before I even got to play it because of this. There's no reason the manufacturer could not have just put a small door in the bottom of the unit like every other pedal I've ever used. Also, the first time I changed the battery, the negative wire pulled out of the connector. I've decided that since I already bought it and like the way it sounds, I'm going to jury-rig a battery connector outside the main body. It'll look like cr4p, but I'll be able to use it without damaging it further and won't have to spend extra for a 110v adapter. I had read about the difficulty changing the battery, but figured I'd give it a shot because it's got so low-priced. Had I gone to a brink and mortar store and seen it, I would not have purchased this unit. If someone already has an adapter they plan on using with it, by all means do so.Russ G

I got one open box so the price was very nice. Cheaper than any effects pedal I could buy. Works perfectly with the Line 6 viper. This one just has the four pedals so you can set up 4 channels for use with the tap of the foot. I don't think the instructions mention it but basically, just hit a pedal, dial in the sound you want on the amp, then hold the channel button for that pedal down on the amp for a few seconds and it programs it in. Move to the next pedal rinse repeat… The Wah is pretty good. More like a Morley than a Dunlop. Maybe too much high end on the wah but you quickly get a feel for it and just don't stomp down all the way like you might on other wahs.Sandfarmer
This is my first line 6 product and I have to say it’s very cool. I bought this to go with the line 6 spider 15 classic. I didn’t need a big amp and figured if I need to upgrade this pedal would work for other line 6 amps. There is a learning curve to this pedal and it will require additional internet research to use it to its full capabilities however out of the box it is worth the money. There are 4 pedals to control the affects of the amp (depending on which one you buy) as well as a way/volume pedal. If you are just starting out this is a great buy until you find a specific sound that you want (like a crybaby way). If you are playing on stage this is also a great buy because it only requires one cable (that reminds me of an Ethernet cable) that comes with it. The cable is very long and provides power as well so don’t freak out when you don’t see a power supply in the box it’s all good.Tim
Sound: Not applicable. Features: Although I own several Line 6 amps, I'm rating the product for its other application, which is to send MIDI to a computer over USB. There are very few alternatives in the way of bus-powered USB pedals that send MIDI to a virtual port. (I've been waiting for years for one, actually.) The good news is that this one works. It's also small and light (while still feeling solid and stable once it's placed) and very inexpensive. If you're running a PC in your live set up, this is just ideal. It can be easily programmed to send Program Change, CC, MIDI Machine Control, Mackie Control… pretty much anything on any channel, etc. The software to configure this is straightforward and works really well. Especially nice for guitarists who are accustomed to a switch at the toe-end of the expression pedal to toggle wah, etc. It's all there and works easily. The only downside is that the pedal isn't expandable at all. It would have been nice, since all the brains are in place, if Line 6 had added a couple of 1/4" jacks for additional switches and or an additional expression pedal, though of course this would have brought the price up a bit. And I'm not sure about reliabilty. As I said the pedal is light-weight, and it won't surprise me if I *eventually* stomp it to death, but at this price I'm sure I will have gotten my money's worth first. (I just hope this product is popular enough that I can find a replacement when the time comes!) Ease of Use: Plugged it in. Downloaded the software. The software was totally intuitive and everything worked perfectly. (This is *not* commonplace with MIDI controllers…) Quality: I really like the feel of the switches, the economy of scale, the choice of features, etc. It's a cool product IMO, and more or less unique. Other players might find the lightweight construction and materials to be a bit "flimsy". Value: $99 bucks for the MIDI controller *and* the MIDI interface, and if you use a Line 6 amp it doubles as your onstage tuner. Size makes it suitable for small gigs and small rigs. It's a good solution for very reasonable money. Manufacturer Support: Line 6 is a big company now, but they've been good to work with in my experience, and their website is pretty comprehensive, so high marks. I haven't had to contact them about this product, and that's a good thing. The Wow Factor: Well, it's sexy to me, but I'm a total geek. 🙂 It made my PC/Ableton/Guitar Rig set up nice and portable. I'm probably the only person on earth who equates that with "sex appeal" LOL. Overall: There is no other single product (that I'm aware of) that would replace this, and yes, it's a big help for me in realizing my musical goals. So, 10 overall.

I chose the SL Drive from a huge amount of drives on the market as I wanted something that fit on a small pedalboard, could provide a Marshall style sound at all gain levels as an alternative to amp gain, and which could work well with the BB MB pre-amp also by Xotic. This pedal really delivers. Although it takes time to set up and find the best sounds for personal preference, it provides a variety of useful tones across the spectra of volume, gain, and equalisation. The design is just so thoughtful and I like the possibility of running it at 18v, although at the moment 9v is better to my ears. I've had the SL drive for awhile now and try as I might I can't find anything that can kick it off my board. I've tried numerous other amp in a box pedals(Marshall and otherwise),overdrives and distortions but I keep coming back to this little guy. I guess I keep trying because I find it hard to believe that a pedal this small and this inexpensive(relatively) can't be outdone. I bought this thing because it's simple and sounds good. I've got a memory man deluxe which is great but too complicated for me. Delay is awesome but I'm just not a good enough player to use it properly and take advantage of all the cool sounds you can get from delay. I bought this just to try out and it's great. It only echoes for I think 30 or 60 ms so you get an awesome slap back sound. I use it for cool country style solos and sometimes I leave it on to get a reverb sound with it. I also really like it to fatten my guitars. I play mostly single coils so this pedal really makes them sound good. The boost is good too, and it's aloud me to take my mxr micro amp off my board and save some room for other pedals. If you just want to add a simple echo without all the knobs and crazy sounds of a delay this pedal is the way to go.Nik
Very well made. All metal, buttons feel like they will last forever. I had just got a Gretsch Hollow body, and wanted that slap back sound of the 50's. Milk Man delivered. And then some. You can pretty much dial in any slap back tone you want. I have a Peavey Bandit 112 silver and little Peavey 258 Rage. That boost button can make that Rage talk like it's my bandit. Nice clean sound and tone, then towards the max, it's starts to break up and give that crunchy sound. I was not expecting that good of boost, wasn't even looking for it, but man it really pushes. Very happy especially with that bonus I wasn't looking for. Plus this was a lot cheaper than another brand that was around $350-$400. If you want that old 50's push, this is a great take on it. The Gretsch already had that rock a billy sound, but this puts the icing on the cake. AMS has awesome options on paying, plus their shipping is top notch! Did I really need another delay when I already have 2? No.. But I love cheap pedals and the price point for an analog delay in a metal box had me in disbelief, so I just had to try it. And I'm really happy I did. It's good. I don't know what else to say.. I've been playing around with it on my mini board with a TS808 and a verb that are each many times the price of the delay. If I had heard it without knowing what the delay was, I would easily believe it was an much more expensive pedal . Sure it doesn't have as many features as some of the fancy guys, but it sounds really good in all the ways I would use a delay. It also seems to be well built, so I have no complaints. It's on sale at the moment, so I might grab another for a backup and put this guy on my main board.Jeffrey

I used a Boss SD-9 until it broke, and I have an 80's ProCo Rat that doesn't quite work as the edge that I was looking for. I was using a Chinese T'Screamer clone pedal, and it was good…but I thought, wouldn't the real thing be better? I weighed price against quality and quality won out, and I went with the Maxon instead of the Ibanez TS simply because the reviews overall were better. I'm not disappointed; the OD-9 is exactly the rocket fuel I was needing to get into the cosmos. Running the 50's Classic Strat through the OD-9 into a Deluxe Reverb is like finding gold. It sounds like a beautiful, buxom angel is sitting on top of your amp and singing Glory Glory Hallelujah. It is the sound you wanted all along and never, until this moment, could you get. For additional fire, to invoke an angry, but still buxom, angel, I run the Rat after the OD-9 to dial in a little bit more divine wrath. This is the pedal you want. This pedal, IS the pedal. So it is written, so it shall be done.
I ordered in store and was told I'd get it 3-5 days. I ended up getting it after almost 2 weeks. Had the run around with fed ex. Fed Ex made the the entire thing a headache with their signature required delivery. I'm never home as I'm always working so it took 2 days to get it delivered after the initial day it was suppose to. Also, I ordered the original GREEN Maxon 808 and the order I got delivered to me was the new version of the pedal which is the Maxon 808X which is a red pedal. If it wasn't for the excellent updates on this pedal vs the original green id of returned and asked for my money back.JOE
Why 4 starts and not 5? If you know what a tube screamer does, then this does the business – 5 stars. It really feels like it's built to last, but this ‘80s style design means the pedal feels very heavy and ‘oversized’ compared to modern designs. Underneath it has built in rubber seating which means it is a bit difficult to attach velcro to fix to a pedal board. All this means that if you use it on the floor (‘80s) style then 5 stars, on a pedal board though 4 stars. Sound wise you might be shocked if all you do is compare the sound from a solo guitar with the pedal on and off – it sculptures the sound so that you notice a roll off of bass and treble … but in a mix or on stage the pedal is superb at highlighting the guitar. Just step on it for a solo and you get this wonderful midrange boost and suddenly your guitar just pop’s out of the mix for all to hear. All in all if this is your only pedal and you don’t play with a cranked tube amp you might be a bit disappointed. If you are combining with other overdrives and/or overdriven amps it can really bring out a clarity in the sound and is a great tool.David B.

How odd. This review was flagged for writing Big Mu** using the two F's 🙂 For the money, this is a really hard pedal to beat. It goes from mild and laid-back to wild and intense. The controls feel great…like as in excellent quality. This is a reissue of the original Big Mu** PI. I tried a Big Mu** PI with Wicker and forget about it. It hissed so loud in Wicker mode that I couldn't even here myself think and it got even worse with the tone switch off. And even in the so-called Big Mu** PI mode, it didn't sound anywhere near as good as this Rams Head does. And, the Rams Head is quiet compared to the BM PI with Wicker. One more thing, The BM PI with Wicker does not say anywhere on it nor in the included paperwork where it's made, whereas the RH BM PI clearly says New York City on the face of it…Vincent
The tone sweep is nice and there are some interesting spots because it is linear while kind of non-linear at 10 to noon and about 1-2 on tone control. I can't say why but usually I had purchased like more expensive versions of ehx pedals. That being said, I think people need to realize that these are quite accurate reissues and circuits, and just because it is an affordable pedal doesn't mean it isn't great.
Overall: Floats like a stone and stings like a nest of angry hornets! This box has the buzzsaw sound down pat. The fuzz is a thick, smooth, and consistent. I like this kind of fuzz in particular because it’s less fuzzy and little more distortion-like. The Tone knob has a really wide sweep from boomy bass to mid-range Hades. It has plenty of gain on tap and even sounds pretty good with the guitar’s volume rolled back a skosh.I’ve never used the original Green Russian Muff and have only heard them compared through videos online, so I can’t speak as to how they’re different/alike. I got it because I didn’t want to haul my vintage Black Russian Muff around from gig to gig anymore because it’s getting valuable and since it was a pretty jenky design to begin with, it’s liable to break with heavy use. That being said, the reissue Green Russian Muff has a different sound than an original V8 Black Russian Muff. It doesn’t sound as good to me, but it’s not so different that I wouldn’t use the Green Russian live in lieu of the Black Russian for the aforementioned reasons. One huge plus for the Green Russian is its pedalboard friendly size. The Black Russian is the size of an 80s metal lunchbox and took up an awkward sized chunk of the pedalboard. Now there’s more room for other unnecessary boxes (gulp)! One noteworthy ding for this pedal is how difficult it is to see the script on the top of the pedal. The words are printed right underneath the knobs, so if it’s kinda dark (which it usually is) and the lights are all in front of you (which they usually are) the words are impossible to see. Overall it’s a nice fuzz especially for the price. It’s noisy, but once the music gets rolling you won’t even notice it.Brad

It's just a different kind of pedal. To me, it feels "amp-like." It gives your amp a new character and sounds great running a TS into it, or an OCD as more of a clean boost. The other thing I like is that it sounds great at lower distortion levels. It's just a different color and feel under the fingers. At high gain, it roars! Very controllable, tho. In regards to PMT’s service they’re 2nd to none! Speedy delivery, parts are always in good condition & well packaged. And with the limited products that I’ve ever had issues with theyre quick to mend & or replace the parts so can’t recommend them enough. In regards to the pedal itself it’s a strong distortion pedal with the added benefit of full EQ giving you the ability to create a range of sound. I've had this pedal for a year and a half. It does exactly what I was craving a distortion pedal to do. Pure sound quality. The distortion and output knobs give a good range of effects. If you turn up the output and drop the distortion, you get a rich, clean overdrive. Upping the distortion and dropping the output delivers that gritty, dirty distortion that you're likely after. And every combination in between produce satisfying variations. You can truly dial in your desired tone. One disclaimer: my pedal runs HOT. For example, if my distortion knob is at 2 o'clock, my output knob will need to be at 7 o'clock, or it's unbearably loud. When I switch to a different pedal after playing this pedal, the next pedal always seem quiet by comparison. But what can I say? This pedal is BA, and it delivers exactly what I wanted. And over time I've gotten a better handle on how to dial in the right amount of heat. I wholeheartedly recommend this pedal.Zaccoon

Overall: Whether you're trying to dial in a wet surf rock reverb or an ambient shoegaze tone with lots of atmosphere, this pedal can do it all. This is hands down the best pedal I've ever purchased and far surpasses any other reverb pedal I've heard. You can even tweaked it to make it sound like a proper spring reverb unit on an old fender amp. There's also a handy shimmer effect you can use to get some angelic and synth-like tones, which can sound monolithic accompanied with a fuzz. I'd recommend this pedal for any style of playing, as it's one of the most versatile ones on the market right now. Also since it's Boss it's built like an absolute tank. I use a few different brands of pedals and Boss makes solid pedals. This rv6 pedal makes a great variety of reverbs that sound very good with cleans, on every setting. I play with a few different distortions. It is very difficult to dial in a good reverb sound with too much distortion. The level setting has to be low and the sensitivity of the effects are boosted and that makes it very hard to easily swap from clean to dirty without major changes. Dirty will require serious tweaking. I would give it a 3 star because it's not friendly to dirty, but I'll give it 4 stars just because the cleans really do sound great and the variety and quality of sounds are in a price range well below many other reverbs of this caliber. It's a BOSS, a tank. I did mess with the shimmer with crunch and low level and found some decent sounds.Ghostpuncher
I got this as a catch-all reverb to round out a basic pedal board I use for home practice and hobby recording. First off, all the "usual suspect" reverb tones sound really great in the effects loop of my Bogner Atma combo. I had read reviews of the RV6 where it had been criticized for sounding digital/grainy, but I preferred it over the Oceans and HOF2 I compared it to. I classify myself as a somewhat fussy "toan snob" who still prefers tubes and analog, so I wonder if maybe that "digital/grainy" complaint was with it going straight in, out in front of the preamp. I'll have to get around to trying it like an outboard spring verb sometime. I really dig the shimmer verb, especially with a flanged, overdriven lead tone. I need to get an expression pedal now and play around with oscillating that! Last thing I want to compliment is the helpful buffer the Boss adds at the tail end of my board. I pretty much have no loss now. Kudos to Boss for yet another solid product!Lee B.

This unit is just incredible. I've been playing since the early 70's and with all the equipment that I've owned I really think the GT100 has possibly impressed me more than anything I've bought! There's some wonderful preset sounds in this tone monster and it's easy to edit the one's that you like. If you're already proficient at programming pedals then this one will be a dream for you to manipulate. This isn't my first multi effects pedal but I don't enjoy programming and this is by far the easiest to program of the one's I've owned. I can't say enough about the sound of this thing. Overall: I picked this up knowing it was at the end of it's market life, but I wanted to finally own one. COSM is starting to feel a little old, but it's still an amazing pedalboard. The amp modeling is good, especially the clean tones. The distortion can get a little "digital" sounding, but it's still very usable. The effects are top notch, especially the delay and reverb. What attracted me to this product was the routing options, specifically USB. I do a lot of home recording on my DAW and an underappreciated feature of this board is the ability to record both a dry and wet signal to your DAW at the same time. Reamping (routing the signal out of your DAW back into the device for processing after recording) is a great tool and something that is not found in a lot of boards. It really gives this kit an extended life off the stage and in the studio. 6 years after launch this is still a great product!Allan
I have to say I love his board, I've been through several multi effects and was recently building up an all analogue pedal board myself with some nice TRex and Keeley pedals in there. I was inspired after watching Johnny Marr and listening to some of the tones he got from the GT100 so I jumped when it was on offer. I run it through a small Behringer mixing desk into two Yamaha DBR12's and all I can say is that it sounds awesome. As a change to my usual random approach I went through each preset and made a note what it reminded me of or what it might be useful for,if I liked the patch. Its a testament to the board that out of the 200 presets I marked nearly 50 out for being useful out of the box. Now i just refer to that sheet and if I have a cover song I want to try or a feel for an original piece I just the closest preset as a starting point. There are so many features on this board its pointless trying to list them but suffice to say its got everything you are going to need, and there is always the effects loop if you are missing some random effect. What else can I say, oh yes its improving my playing as I use the metronome on it loads, really helping me improve my speed. The screens are clear and easy to view, and the whole menu is very intuitive to work with. Gets a definite thumbs up from me absolute winner of a product 🙂

This pedal is worth the hype 100%… If you're reading the right hype! It's an awesome pedal for that classic rock crunch, pushing an already hot tube amp over board into perfect leads! Think glam, early punk, and especially britpop like Oasis! One last important note to all the jokers complaining that it's not "transparent" enough… Guess what, it's not supposed to be! Do some research, watch some videos… This is the best of the best of SOFT CLIPPING overdrive pedals. Soft clipping means it adds mid tone grit that isn't there to cut through the mix beautifully. If you want a "transparent" drive pedal that completely keeps the tone of your guitar like an amp being turned up a bit, you want a BLUES BREAKER or a similar clone. Me, I prefer this one cuz it gives you that classic rock crunch right in the middle of the mix so that every chord and riff cuts right through! CheersSteve
Most satisfied with this overdrive unit. With my Tele on wide open volume for solos, along with compression on guitar, the guitar becomes a driving force of sound even if direct thru a channel on your board as opposed to an amplifier. But, the direct location of the amp or pa speaker in relation to the guitar will create a musical feedback response without turning around and trying to shove your guitar face first into the speaker as some do. It does a good job with overdrive and also compresses as well. My foundation is a Schecter semi-hollow that I've gutted and replaced with 50s wiring, vintage taper volume pots and unpotted humbuckers – my amp is Swart with RCA tubes throughout. Plugged straight in to amp, I can roll the volume and tone control on the guitar to get a lot of tonal variations. The tubescreamer colors all the nice things that great tubes produce. I think a more transparent overdrive like a Klon clone would suit my setup better and they can be constantly on all the time – the tubescreamer is different and not in a bad way as it is really cool at what it does. I can see it being well suited to warm and fatten the bridge pickup in a strat when playing leads. It has a nice buffer – just wish the buffer was on all the time. I'd of kept it if that was the case.Phil
