I put these in an American professional jazz to be able to blend without noise. I chose them because I wanted it to remain a completely Fender bass. They aren't absolutely horrible sounding, but I have decided the only way these companies should make noiseless "single coils" is by using side by side split coils. Not stacked dual coils. Splitting the coils gives good output, attitude, and a low mid bump- you know the kind that makes people love P basses. Everybody is figuring this out except Fender- the greatest guitar maker in the world. Aguilar, Dimarzio, Nordstrand, Seymour Duncan (recently), mojotone (guitar pickups), Fralin. They've all figured out the noiseless thing. I ended up with Nordstrand NJ4SE in one and Dimarzio model J in the other. Love both of my jazz basses now. I don't know if this is the LATEST version of the noiseless jazz bass pickups…it is so hard to keep up with Fender as they roll out newer versions, however, this is a great replacement to older jazz bass pickups. It really as close to noise free as you can get as you solo each pickup individually. As most jazz bass players know, the single coil aspect of the jazz bass pickup is GOING to get some hum or noise unless you are playing both the neck and bridge pickups at the same time to cancel out noise. This retains the signature Fender Jazz Bass sound with great clarity with the advantage of being noise free. Highly recommended!!road-cat1

I was excited to get the geezer split pbass pickup. After some manipulation it's great. I had to reverse the pots to allow the ground to reach the bridge. I'm concerned why a 4 inch ground was supplied while ample cable was supplied to the rest of the process. Maybe I bought one that was made after lunch. It does sound great. But to EMg qc Make the ground cable longer. My USA pbass from 94 did not have a compatible channel to the bridge. Had to Go hd to buy spec bit to make it happen. Rock onConor Daily
Overall: I bought these like 6 or 8 months ago for a Squier Affinity PJ Bass. The J pickup wasn't a throw in like the P pickup. I had to expand a little bit the pickup opening to make it fit. The installation was a hassle. I originally bought these for the "convenience" of solder less installation but could't get it to work.Had extra low volume and lots of ground and hiss. I uninstalled and reinstalled several times with no success. I gave up. Last week, I decided to try again. I ignored the instructions and started experimenting by inverting some of the connections. After a few trials and errors, I inverted one of the tone connections and problem solved! Now they're sounding good, punchy and with no hiss or ground noise whatsoever.In conclusion, installation can be way harder that one would think of solder less connections, but the end result is very satisfactory to the ears.Cesar
I got these to replace a faulty fender pickup that packed up in a almost new instrument. Turned out that it was so overwound that the copper was rubbing on the inside edges of the pickup cover.This plus all sorts of debris & dust under the pickguard resulted in cutting through the winding. Anyway I couldnt be bothered going through the hassle returning the instrument & thought Id try these toneriders ,they are easy to fit & of a much higher quality construction over the vintage fender ones. They sound much better also, they are full bodied & punchy with slight break up distortion only at the very top end of the volume knob which sounds good, i think thats why they describe them as hot vintage. I was initially concerned to replace the stock ones but these are great fun & much better so it worked out nicely in the end. I have Fender P bass, no surprise there. This pickup really shines with distortion, overdrive, and fuzz through my tube amps. The dynamic range and tone of this pickup really shows up with all my overdrive pedals, etc. I notice this pickup pushes my amp more than the Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound pickups I have in another P bass of mine. The SPB-2 has a more vintage voicing than the very popular Quarter Pound SPB-3. I like the mid and crispness I get with the SPB-2 a bit more than the SPB-3. My only issue (though minor) is with installation, I wish the foam that goes under the pickup pushed the pickup up more. Namely, the foam needs a little more resistance to the mounting screws. I had to use different mounting screws to get my pickup as high as I wanted it. This might be particular to my bass though. Overall, this is pickup is great for heavy/loud music styles: posthardcore, math rock, punk, metal. I don't play mellower music or solid state amps, so I can't tell you if it good for those applications. But I can say that my individual notes were more articulate and filled my space (moved more air) with these pickups. Chords sounded very powerful too.MathRockerChris

This pickup came stock in the neck of my ESP LTD EC-1000 along with an EMG 81 in the bridge. All I can say is that this pickup is amazing. I play metal and play with my treble and bass turned up and the mids pulled way back on my amp. It definitely has the mid range crunch and brillance as advertised. For distorted lead playing the sound is smooth and full with just the right amount of crunch and for rhythm it packs plenty of punch. The clean sound is very strong and sounds good for chords and lead alike. This pickup is so good that I don't hardly ever use the 81, for lead or rhythm. It's a shame that this pickups isn't more popular because it is a very versatile and excellent sounding pickup. Just be warned that if you get this pickup that you may never need to use a bridge pickup again!Anonymous
I had the EMG 81, 85 combo. I replaced the EMG 85 with the EMG 60. This pickup gets the most pretty clean sound and compared to the 85 I like the 60's clean tone lots, lots better. The volume and bass are more equal to the 81 so when I switch pups there is no volume change. It also has a very nice distorted tone. I'm metal all the way. The EMG 60 and EMG 81 are the way to go. This is a much better combo than the 85 (no offense to anyone). I did keep my 85 and will always have it in storage but I'm sticking with the 60. The 81 is by far hotter than the 60 but the 60 gets a great bite. I love the pickup. I'm very satisfied with my 81, 60 combo. This is the way to go…..Thanks for reading my review.Lucusarts

I installed this in an Squier dimension bass. I had already installed an S.D. musicman preamp. This pickup gave me the stingray sound or at least close to it. I had to route out the pickup opening for it to fit. It was worth the effort tho. I wish it was priced closer to the Wilkinson $31 I bought for another bass. $95 seems a little high. Overall: We have a 1996 Korean Epiphone RockBass parts-caster that's been around forever in the rehearsal room, so we decided to switch out the Jazz body for a Made In Korea Hondo P-bass body with a small humbucker in the bridge position,split coil in neck postion. We did a small amount of routing to the Hondo body (found out it was solid,not laminated), then added the SMB4D. Wired as full humbucker with the stock split-coils in the neck postion,with 3 volume pots,1 tone. The SMB4D changed that old Korean solid body import into something I never imagined. It kept sounding awesome,no matter what we plugged it into. We layed down some bass track running direct into an RME Babyface Pro,duplicated a precorded track using a USA Fender Precision. Wow,and double wow…the tonal harmonics, all the needed mojo for great bass tracks are in this Music Man replacement pup from Seymour Duncan. I wanted to replace the old worn out pickups in my BC Rich Platinum series bass (P-bass style) with some new active pickups. Did some research and came up with these EMG pickups. I had to do just a small amount of routing for the bridge pickup, but nothing major. Got them put in, and all the electronics that came with them, and put new strings on, tuned up, and had to re-set it up, and what a difference! Made it a whole new bass! My Fender American Ultra Precision just did not have that classic P-bass sound, in fact is was just dull, but with these pickups it has been transformed. When I ordered this product. I always trusted the Agular name and know they make quality products. When I put the pickups in it was a night and day difference. Clarity, punchy lows, miss, and highs. I've played jazz basses for years, recently picking up a late 90s CIJ Geddy Lee Jazz. This bass is based on a 1972 Jazz. The bridge pickup was not working, so I set out to find a good set of pickups. I tried Seymore Duncan Quarter Pounders, a Mexican Standard, and a Fender Custom Shop 60s model not produced any more. By far I liked the Fender Pure Vintage 74s the best. These have a vintage sound, not too hot, with a fuller low end than the 60's custom shop, or my stock pickups in my 2011 am standard jazz (a killer jazz sound). The midrange was very punchy, not too thin, but not fat or thick enough to get lost in the mix. The top end had a bite that lends itself well to a dirt pedal to get some texture. I'm not a huge fan of the bridge pickup soloed on a 70's model jazz, it's too nasal sounding to my ears. I much prefer the 60s spacing. The '74s seem to address that to a certain extent, smoothing out some of the thin nasal bite the 70s bridge pickup is known for. Blended, the sound is full and very punchy. The set growls nicely, in an upper mid sort of way (I see this more due to the 70's bridge pickup spacing) and slapping sounds great if that's your thing. Being mostly a finger player, a fresh set of stainless steel Rounds will get a nice tone that snarls when pushed. I haven't tried flat wound strings, but I'm sure they would sound good. I've never played a 74 jazz, but the pickup set seems to be made for this bass. I think Fender nailed the sound they were looking for here. Construction was typical Fender, nothing fancy and the poles and fiber bobbins were shellac covered. I'm not a huge fan of push back cloth insulated wires, but I had no issues soldering these. So far I haven't had any issues with hum or grounding problems. These are packaged with minimal information, but a schematic was provided for soldering instructions. My one complaint was the lack of information on which pickup was bridge or neck. One was marked with a red dot ( I assumed this was the bridge pickup) but not a single written word regarding the difference. This is annoying at the least, and could be a deal breaker for some if the pickups were are placed incorrectly. Come on Fender, even a note or written mark on the pickup would have been nice. Follow through and do your homework. All complaints aside, these are well worth a try in any jazz, and definitely a home run in a 70's model jazz bass. Add to the fact you can pick these up new for under 100 bucks if you look around, these are worth a try.jamesbaghr
I needed pickups to replace some dead coils on a 1966 Jazz Bass while the originals were out getting rewound, so I bought these '64 Pure Vintage to get me by. They are giving the original coils a run for the money. They possess a bump in the upper midrange that give them the characteristic growl of a vintage Jazz Bass. I'm not certain at all that the rewound 1966 set will go back on the bass unless for resale/originality reasons.gitdoc3qwt
These are great pickups. They exceeded my expectations. They are full and rich sounding and for the price are a superb value. They're less expensive than just about any other good set of Jazz Bass pickups and cost less than having old pickups rewound. Put one of these into my 50's Vibe Squire P-bass, and wow…what a difference! The mod was super-easy (my first ever PUP mod), and the sound is a marked improvement over the stock PUP.Higher overall volume than the stock Fender PUP, and sounds good played with a pick. It really shines for finger-style players, and I even play some slap with it in my R&B band!My Squire is now my #1 bass with this bad boy installed; I play it much more than my Carvin and Washburn (which has Bartolini soapbars). I bought this pickup for a Squier (by Fender) Vintage Modified Telecaster Bass to replace the stock pickup which said Duncan Designed and did not offer the sound I desire. The SCPB-3 has bite and power. Lows are punchy and defined and the mids really cut through the mix. The one I received is silk-screened with Seymour Duncan instead of Basslines, but it is the exact same model. Apparently Seymour Duncan makes these for Basslines. This pickup dropped right in the old Hagstrom 1 Kent series bass. I used the Vintage seymour duncan in the neck slot and the QP in the bridge slot. I set up a volume-tone scheme with two off-on rockers, two 250K ohm pots and 1 .047MFD cap. The warmth from this blend is incredible and the characteristics of the old hags neck has given me one sweet instrument. In the future, I may change the scheme to a volume-volume-tone setup like a P bass but for now I'm too psyched with the joy that I've found!Community User

These are great pickups. A very nice jazz bass sound. Your bass will still sound like a jazz bass only….more. Not overly bassy. Not harsh. Not in a well like sound. Nice and present. They don't bite but they do give you a nice clarity in just the right frequency across the fretboard. I'd say smooth but with a nice percussive punch. Far superior to what they send out with the MIM jazz basses and a reasonable upgrade. You really can't go wrong here.cray54dog

I put these in an American professional jazz to be able to blend without noise. I chose them because I wanted it to remain a completely Fender bass. They aren't absolutely horrible sounding, but I have decided the only way these companies should make noiseless "single coils" is by using side by side split coils. Not stacked dual coils. Splitting the coils gives good output, attitude, and a low mid bump- you know the kind that makes people love P basses. Everybody is figuring this out except Fender- the greatest guitar maker in the world. Aguilar, Dimarzio, Nordstrand, Seymour Duncan (recently), mojotone (guitar pickups), Fralin. They've all figured out the noiseless thing. I ended up with Nordstrand NJ4SE in one and Dimarzio model J in the other. Love both of my jazz basses now. I love you Fender, but get in the game with your pickups!Andrew
I don't know if this is the LATEST version of the noiseless jazz bass pickups…it is so hard to keep up with Fender as they roll out newer versions, however, this is a great replacement to older jazz bass pickups. It really as close to noise free as you can get as you solo each pickup individually. As most jazz bass players know, the single coil aspect of the jazz bass pickup is GOING to get some hum or noise unless you are playing both the neck and bridge pickups at the same time to cancel out noise. This retains the signature Fender Jazz Bass sound with great clarity with the advantage of being noise free. Highly recommended!!road-cat1
These are a special wind from Tim Shaw, the ultimate pickup guy at Fender. They are capable of perfect vintage deep bass while throwing out strong mids and super crisp, bright highs. I have been a bass player for several churches, and continue to do so now on a weekly basis. I played bass in several church events and fundraisers aswell, but never really got the low-end and punch from my bass that I wanted. It always seemed a little too shallow, and behind the music in volume. I finally invested in an active set to replace the passive stock pickups, and I couldn't be happier (I also invested in a nice bass-booster pedal, which is phenomenal). I bring my 5-String SX Vintage Series Bass equipped with these EMGs every Sunday now, and the tone could not be more impressive. I recently bought a 4-String P-Bass Style Fretless for a more wide-range of sounds, and it won't be long before I stick some EMGs on it aswell. I bought this J5 set to fit to my 5 string jazz that I had previously modified in 1996 with a set of emg pick ups. Unfortunately, at that time only standard 4 string pick ups were available and although the string spacing was within tolerance and the bass sounded great the pick ups were undersized and the install never looked tidy. This J5 set is a direct replacement for the original pick ups in a 1996 USA Fender Jazz Standard 5 string.

These were installed in a '98 American Standard. Visually, the white pickups in a white pickguard, with black blades and adjustment screws looks really snazzy. The pickups come well protected in a plastic case and foam. UPS beat up the box, but inside all was well. Word of warning: these did not come with springs for me, and my stock pickups had expansion foam on the bottoms to act as springs, so I had to snag some from another guitar (very odd choice, Fender). The pickups are "potted" with hot melt glue entirely through, and are 2 wire each, with internal wiring. Each pickup is 10k resistance (as much as both stock Fender pickups together). The instructions mention to put the pickups in series, making for 20k resistance. It's a bit high, but the sound from that is amazing. I have 250k pots, with stock ceramic cap in the bass. These do not sound like a low-midrange boomy Precision…these sound like a mildly compressed, EQ'd bass (playing through a Champ 600 wired to an EV 15" cabinet). These are extremely responsive, "punchy," and have excellent sustain. Impressive is the least to be said. They are deep, rumbling, with good midrange balance, and if the tone is left wide open, they have a very neutral, almost singing tone quality. Chording is superb, and high strings are very loud now. The string on my bass have been in use for nearly 10 years. They've been cleaned, but without breaking, I've seen no reason to replace. On the old pickups they sounded a bit dead. The new pickups almost sound like new strings were installed. Bottom line: I have not been impressed with a pickup in some time. These are all they claim to be, and much more. Do your Precision a favor, and install these. You can still get the "vintage" sound with some EQ tweaking, but these are a much more well-rounded set, and for the price…it's a win.UnexplodedCow-a2i6_
I have had this pickup installed in a Frankenstein P-bass for a while. I had a Kramer 700ST bass, and it was P/J with the Spector pickups. I bought a Fender MIM body made from Alder and swapped the Kramer neck onto it. I had one of these from another project and used this pickup. Although the pickup itself sounds great, I don't find it as versatile as others do. I currently have it wired in parallel with 1M CTS pots and a no-load tone pot with a 0.047 uF cap, and I still find the treble extremely lacking. With a ceramic magnet, I expected it to have as many highs as an EMG HZ, but it doesn't. I've used Stainless Steel hex-core strings and the pickup close, and I still have to crank the treble to get any bite out of it. There are definitely a lot more low-mids, however, which may be what is causing the issue with a perceived lack of treble. The Spector P pickup had more bite than this DP127 does in my opinion. Also, I think the DP127 has way too much output for a single middle pickup configuration–it can get muddy real fast, and I'm having to readjust my settings when switching basses on stage. I think an Alnico II magnet rather than ceramic would make this pickup much more versatile than it really is. I don't feel the pickup has as modern of a bass tone as advertised, simply because it lacks a lot of high content even with 1M pots. If I was using it with a J-pickup that had a similar output, I would probably like it more, but I'm not real happy with it as a single-pickup config.Isher
I have owned my 77' Precision since day one. I installed the cream Dimarzio PAF's in Feb 80 and have loved the sound of my bass ever since. I read all the great reviews and decided it was time, after 34 years , to replace the pickups with the DP 127 model. WOW,,what a difference. My guitar player noticed right away the lows and the extra treble edge. My tone pot has never had such range. It will take a bit to get used to the new extra tonal qualities of my bass, but It will be time well spent enjoying getting revived by these pickups. Its as if I was 25 again and got a new bass. I recommend these to anyone looking to enhance the sound of their Precision or any other bass needing a "sound lift". I look forward to playing these pickups for the next 34 years. Wiring was easy and the instructions were simple to follow. The only downside is that Dimarzio should have an online warranty registration option instead of snail mail only. Seems to have the Dimarzio quality I have come to expect. Forthe price these pickups are worth every penny and then some.

Overall: These have a bottom end growl like no other pickups I've played, very touch and attack sensitive, no matter how low I tune there is no mud, the neck pickup is the best I've ever played , fluid , smooth with definition , I play Duncan Jupiter's and they kick ass , the Fishmans are easily on par with them with a growling voice I've never heard from a passive pickup , I like EMG's but the Fishmans are hand's down better. Installation will be a bit frustrating for first timers and novices , I installed them in 2&1/2hrs That included modifying my Epiphone Les Paul Custom Special , the pot holes , were too small as was the input jack hole , I did have to order Long Shaft pots as the included pots are short shafts , If you like EMG's you'll love these. I gave the fetures a low score because they should make them plug and play at this price.Dennis

One thing to note, I did have to route out just a little bit the pickup cavities in my Jackson JS3VQ bass, so do check your pickup cavity size. I just installed these in my baritone Viper tuned to DropG and hoooolly ***!! I expected nice articulation and clarity but I didn't think they'd sound THIS good. These are truly next-level and I don't think anything else comes close. The lows are just nasty, the tightness, bite, the attack…it's just drool-worthy and I can't put the guitar down. The definition is consistent across every string but nothing ever sounds harsh or treble-y. Most 'metal' pickups are all about output and I've never understood that. Too hot, too boomy, too compressed, etc. Both voices are extremely useful and the neck never gets muddy. Cleans are nice and flat, nothing in the EQ is 'boosted' so it's the perfect platform for layering effects. I was skeptical about all the hype and rave reviews but I stand humbly corrected. It's all true and I can't recommend the Fishman Fluence Moderns enough. They are extraordinary.Cody

A lot of people seemed to go with the hype from Aguilar,EMG, Nordstrand and many others. What they don't know is that the most expensive pickups aren't sign of the best tone you can get. These Dimarzio Ultra Jazz pickups are seriously the best Jazz pickups not only for the money but for the beautiful tones you can get out of it. I'm really impressed with the nuances I can get out from these pups. I've played and owned Seymour Duncan, EMG, Fender,Bartolini and many others and my honest opinion these Ultra Jazz pickups are the best of all. These pickups are amazing. I purchased them for my 08 mim Jazz. What a difference. I needed to do other modifications to the bass while installing, so the tone isn't even at it's fullest yet. And it's WAY better than stock now. It's only going to get better as it settles in. And the best part is…. Totally SILENT! I also wired them up for series/parallel swap and phase reversal. the pickups came with a color diagram so that you can use push/pull pots to accomplish all the switching options. I now have clear highs, and punchy.chunky lows. The mids are not muddy either. And that takes some getting used to. Now my bass is like a new toy. I love it!
I am a longtime guitarist and have recently picked up the bass. Bought a nice MIM J bass, but the noisy PUPs were killing me. Talked to a bunch of guitar techs and they all said the best bang for the buck are these Dimarzios. Installation was a breeze…I could have done it, but my tech only charged twenty and; now that I have seen it done I would do it in the future myself. I just installed these in my baritone Viper tuned to DropG and hoooolly ***!! I expected nice articulation and clarity but I didn't think they'd sound THIS good. These are truly next-level and I don't think anything else comes close. The lows are just nasty, the tightness, bite, the attack…it's just drool-worthy and I can't put the guitar down. The definition is consistent across every string but nothing ever sounds harsh or treble-y. Most 'metal' pickups are all about output and I've never understood that. Too hot, too boomy, too compressed, etc. Both voices are extremely useful and the neck never gets muddy. Cleans are nice and flat, nothing in the EQ is 'boosted' so it's the perfect platform for layering effects. I was skeptical about all the hype and rave reviews but I stand humbly corrected. It's all true and I can't recommend the Fishman Fluence Moderns enough. They are extraordinary.Cody

I ve had these in for a few years, decided to give dimarzios a try instead. these provide a very round and balanced tone. they ve been professionally uninstalled by my trusted local guitar tech. wire cover cloths still have plenty of wax on them and the pickup covers are clean. i placed the neck pickup into the upper section of the package.

If you want amazing tone from your Fender Jazz Bass, you just can't go wrong with this set of pickups. The bridge pickup gives you more output, more growl & honk, and the neck pickup is amazing as well. No noise issues (not "silent," but no issues at all). I mostly play jazz and blues, and absolutely love these pickups. A huge upgrade from the MIM Jazz Bass pickups. Go for it!
Got these to upgrade my Fender MIM Jazz and sound more like the cool 60's grooves we all know and love. Very nice, clear and musical. Lots of bass and I can shape the treble and mids with my EQ as much as one could dream. Tonewise, these are everything I hoped. My "but" is that the pole pieces are flat, compared to my strings that arch to match the action from bridge through neck and nut, leaving my A and D strings a bit farther from the flat pickups than the E and G strings, so those two outside strings are noticeably louder than the two inside strings. I was surprised by the difference, as my previous pickups, while overall tonally inferior, had staggered poles to better match those distances, thus produced much more even volume across the strings.Kevin
These pups are a great replacement option for any midrange priced Jazz Bass. If you have a nice broken in & straight necked MIM, MIJ/CIJ, or a Highway 1 Jazz these are an instant and effective upgrade. I replaced the Japanese pups in my MIJ 75 reissue w/ this set and it made a great difference. I was very happy with my purchase to say the least. The sets dynamics allowed for both tonal diversity, and ease of use. You can dial in what you need (tone/vol. wise) quicker because the controls loose that extreme sensitivity associated with cheeaper pups. The neck pickup has great pressence and low end but the star of the set in my opinion is the bridge/lead pup. The lead pup does wonders for midrange grit. You can get it to sound fairly dirty which is perfect for any rock bassist wrecking w/ an old Ampeg rig behind them. I generally play with the bridge @ max, 3/4 of the neck, and max the master tone's bright side out. I generally play a lot of rock though. When I play country I use the neck pup to my advantage. Cranking the neck pup allows more volume for low end, a warmer tonal range, and generally it brings out your finger/pick attack. It all depends on where you rest a thumb or dig in.One thing that differs these pickups from other passive Jazz pups is the drop in vol./output level. This is trouble for those that already have trouble cutting through a mix. It is a double edge sword. I actually enjoyed the volume cut because it allowed me to crank my gain, and drive my tubes harder. The craftsmanship was great. The solder points were strong and neat. The wires were jacketed well and had good length to them… long enough for a easy connection yet short enough to avoid a mess under your pickguard. They were a breeze to install. I just reconnected the new pups wires as I disassembled the old ones. I strongly recommened doing it step by step like this. If you disconnect everything and forget what goes where all you have is a crummy drawing for directions. Also don't forget to take note of which pick up is the bridge and which is the neck. I've seen and heard people dog a new set of pickups because they flopped the order in the set. I also suggest following the fender owners manuel guidelines on pick up height and positioning. This will improve tone and precision with intonation.All in all you have to hear them for yourself but they are one the best upgrades you can buy for a midrange priced jazz. I wish they sold individual bridge sets so i could put one in my precision bass after some work. That would be great.
19. Aguilar Ag 4p-60 Bass Guitar Pickup

I replaced the pickups and circuitry of a new Squier Classic Vibe '60's Precision Bass, first with EMG pickup (Did NOT like the EMG) then the Aguilar, after seeing reviews. I also replaced pots with Bourns 250k Linear for Vol. and Bourns 250k Audio for Tone, installing a 0.068mf capacitor on the Tone pot. Terrific combination. There is a fine range of tone with these pickups, nicely governed by the Bourns. Really lovely deep clear growl on the low E, so it's a pleasure to be doing scales and riffs down there. The .068mf cap filters off the thinner, snappy upper string sound, so there is more useable range since the A, D and G don't sound tooo thin and barky on the low frets. That single, inexpensive capacitor change makes a fine difference! Oh, also installed a Fender higher-mass bridge, as seen in photo.Andrew G.
Aguilar 4P-60 4-String P Bass 60's – High quality of pickup. class A . I recently purchased a Stuart Spector Legend Classic 5 string bass on Ebay. It came with EMG-Hz pick-ups. I wasn't satisfied with the tone and volume available through those pick ups. The Legend is a low-end Spector and it list for less than $900. I own a Spector Euro5LX neck-through which list around $2800. I had two EMG-40DC's professionally installed. The difference is remarkable. The cheaper bolt-on neck legend has a sound that is comparable to the Euro LX. I played the Legend on the gig this past weekend and the sound was awesome. Remarkable tone; even the low B was clear and fat. The EMG-40DC pick ups will turn an ordinary 5 string instrument into an extraordinary one. If you own a inexpensive instrument try replacing the stock picks with EMG's. You will not regret it.P. Muzi Branch
I've used EMGs before in the guitars I make, so I know the quality of the sound but when I made my latest bass, I didn't have the cash to fit EMGs and had to put up with inferior pickups for a while. Although the previous pickups were good, fitting these have been a great improvement in depth of sound, clarity and headroom. EMG recommend using 2x 9v batteries to increase headroom and I would have done this but my bass is a small headless one with no body space for 2 battery cases. Despite this the result has been excellent and well worth the money.mcveigh7tx
