1. Lr Baggs Ibeam Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup System (Nylon String)
Product Details:
The ibeam's mipa award-winning design employs a matched pair of virtually weightless film sensors that flex with the soundboard to trace your guitar's voice much like diaphragms in a stereo mic. a key advantage over typical bridge plate sensors is the ibeam's "cardioid" like response pattern that inhibits feedback and string squeak while selectively admitting rich tone-producting vibrations. weighing less than 1/3 of an ounce, the pickup will not alter the guitar's natural acoustics and easily mounts to the bridge plate with peel-and-stick adhesive. available here for nylon string guitar.
Reviews:
I have heard no after market pickup that more faithfully reproduces the tone of an acoustic guitar. Easy install, comes with jig and extra adhesive strips in case you (or your friend), oh I don't know, drop your guitar on the concrete floor of a Masaai church in Kenya and have to send your guitar back to the states for repair, but want to put the pickup into a cheap yahama for the time being. Baggs even sent me and extra jig and adhesives, in Kenya, to install it. And it makes the Yamaha sound very good, even though it doesn't even really sound that good acoustically! An amazing pickup that I will use as long as they are still in production! Easy to use, easy to install, virtually indestructible, lightweight and invisible. Outstanding quality and design. I bought mine years ago. The current price is very agreeable and worth every penny if you really care about tone, even if you have a mediocre guitar to install it in!prof69strat
After considerable research I had a Baggs iBeam active installed in my Martin D28 – I'd found the D28 recorded well with a mic, but tended to be boomy when mic'd for live sound reinforcement. An experienced Martin guitar tech installed it for me. I've tried it straight into a mixing board and through a Genz-Benz Shen Pro-LT. It sounds oh so very natural, and gets all the gain I need. It really shines for finger-style. It may not be a good choice in loud environments, as it would probably feedback, but in such situations tonal subtlety is usually less important. It was also important that it was both visually unobtrusive and physically non-invasive. That way it can be replaced – the D28 is likely to outlive the useful life of any pickup system. I am picky about sound quality and am quite happy…price was reasonable too.Return2Normal
Sound: Installed it in a Composite Acoustics Legacy/Dreadnought guitar. The sound is very natural. A lot easier to install. Like one other person said here it is real boomy at your regular settings. I had to back the bass off on my amp. It is real microphone sounding as thats probably what it is. Thus it is feedback prone if you are sitting in front of your speakers. It did well in a solo performance. Not sure how well it will do in a setting where volume is needed. But I would just use a different guitar. I do like it a lot. Features: Has a volume wheel you stick inside the sound hole out of sight. Ease of Use: With the installation jig that comes with it you can position the pickup exactly under the saddle perfectly. I really did not want to get into drilling holes under the saddle for the pickup wires, soldering wires, and sanding down the saddle. Installation is a snap. The Wow Factor: A pretty girl came up and said my guitar sounded real nice.

Hands down! The best sound for an acoustic. I was looking for something that I could hear each string with the same balance. And this pickup was perfect! You dont hear more of one string or less of one. Every string has the same volume and tone. And in the clean channel with no eq, it has natural low end!performanceautoglassandtint
This pickup works great. It's easy to install yourself if you're brave. It took me about an hour. I recommend several pieces of tape over the end pin hole before you drill the guitar, this helps prevent chipping the finish, I also recommend access to a good belt sander to get the bridge sanded down just right to compensate for the pickup underneath it. I use this pickup with an LR Baggs ParaDI and I always get a great sound with them.ToddAllenHooper

4. Lr Baggs Eas Element Active System Pickup Preamp Volume Control Nylon
Product Details:
Unlike typical undersaddle acoustic guitar pickups that are dependent on string compression for their sound, the element was engineered to mirror the soundboard’s actual movement as you play. at the heart of the pickup, a flexible film sensor only 2 thousandths of an inch thick picks up the guitar’s most delicate nuances. tracking the motion of the top rather than a direct string attack suppresses “quack” caused by compression and unlocks the element’s unrivaled dynamic range. the pickup’s minimalist construction lessens any influence on the acoustic properties and creates an intimate coupling between the pickup and guitar for the highest fidelity possible.

Reviews:
This undersaddle pickup utilizes a flexible, metal wrapped cable, rather than the hard piezo style pickup. LR Baggs claims this will not only capture the saddle/bridge tones, but will also include and amplify internal resonance due to the microphonic ability of the cable. After installing one for steel strings, and one for nylon strings, I can assure you this is completely correct! Both versions have resulted in phenominal, warm, rich, focused tones – but sharper than LR Baggs I Beam pickup. If you can install a piezo, you can install this. And if you are debating, this is the one to get!WannaBeGood
I bought this LR Baggs Element pickup because I wanted one that's specifically voiced for nylon string guitars. There are two versions of the LR Baggs Element, so this review only pertains to the nylon string version. I'm an experienced wood craftsman who's built furniture for my home use, so the installation went quite quickly and without significant complications. There are a variety of YouTube videos available which anyone can watch to assess their own capabilities before deciding to tackle the installation themselves. It should be noted that the LR Baggs warranty does NOT cover do-it-yourself installations, so give that appropriate consideration. Personally, I had no desire to double the cost of the pickup by taking it to a luthier to do the relatively minor work involved. In my case, I find that the use of an external DI box more than makes up for the fact that the LR Baggs Element has no built-in EQ controls — just a simple volume wheel to control output. Once installed in my Orpheus Valley Fiesta classical guitar, the results were outstanding. I play through a Fishman Aura Spectrum DI box and a number of the Fishman microphone images produce fantastically, rich, detailed sound. One of my nylon classical guitars has a Fishman Presys Blend pickup system installed and the LR Baggs Element sounds every bit as good at half the price. I highly recommend it to all who desire reasonably priced, straight-forward nylon string amplification without a lot of bells ad whistles.Dragon Dave

Reviews:
The guitars seen in Watteau's paintings we now refer to as "baroque guitars". (In the Baroque era, which didn't call itself that, pretty much every European language designated it a "Spanish guitar" — except in Spain, where it was unsurprisingly simply called a guitar, period.) I've got two, one expensive (for me) — crafted in England in 1980 (a 300th anniversary Voboam atelier commemorative edition), weird, beautiful, boxy tone even with historical-tension Nylgut (real gut is for me an insupportable extravagance), elaborately ornamented and quite fragile, leaving the house only on rare occasions — and one not so much — made in Pakistan recently (a crude-ish copy of a Sellas workshop production from 1630s Venice), built like a tank, Nylgut-strung, good enough for weddings, funerals, restaurants, etc. Both reasonably accurate replicas in their different ways, both insanely quiet, designed for intimate settings in a much less noisy era. So, amplification: not optional. But mics are a performance-cramping pain when sweating 17th-c. repertory at my low skill level, and the Barcus-Berry transducer I was obliged to affix to the exterior of the workhorse instrument — the carved rosette in its soundhole renders breaching the interior impossible — looked awful and, through no fault of the pickup, never quite worked. When I heard about the Kremona, I decided to try it, and I'm glad I did. It yields the best amplified representation of the instrument's tone I've yet achieved; also, it integrates well appearance-wise with the ornate mustache bridge. Per the durability issue, the unit is held so tightly to the bridge by the guitar's five double courses and its jack positioned so close to the first course that only main force coupled with bad luck could effect the snapping-off referred to elsewhere. But I don't plan ever to uninstall it, so I guess my situation differs from that of someone taking it off and putting it on on a regular basis. Anyway, verdict: 10 thumbs up!Kevin McFoy Dunn
Nice sounding easy to install pickup for nylon-stringed guitar. It slips under strings on top of tie bar. It can be installed without changing strings but you have to loosen them up a lot to get under them. Once installed, you plug in with 9 foot skinny cable or a smaller cable that you can then attach to a higher quality 1/4 inch cable of your choice and included belt clip. Have not had issues with it snapping as others apparently have. I leave it on the guitar at all times and plug it in when I want to play through my amp. Sound is excellent for a piezo.Franklin M
The Kremona NG-1 pickup is an excellent solution to the problem of amplifying a traditional classical guitar without having to alter the instrument in any way. The laminated wooden blade slips under the strings on the tie bar without a lot of fuss and the amplified sound is quite good! I would recommend using an acoustic guitar processor or good acoustic guitar amp to tweak the sound but given the price, it's an amazingly effective solution. HOWEVER…it is a very, very fragile device and it wouldn't take much to break it. One must take great care in plugging and unplugging the cord from the unit. Any sudden jerks of the cord could break it and it can easily break from shutting a guitar case lid on it. Still, if you need to amplify your '68 Ramirez without drilling holes or hanging contraptions off of it, this is the way to go. I have to think someone will create a more durable, reliable variation on this idea. Until then, this will do a more than credible job.usdaprime61

Reviews:
Just after Christmas 2012 I had this installed in my Epiphone EJ200. I usually obsess over things like this for a while, reading review after review of the choices and looking at vids on YouTube. Finally I pulled the trigger on this one, and I must say it's pretty darn impressive. It gives a really really close to true acoustic sound, but where it totally shines is when you throw in a bit of chorus or some other effect. Five minutes ago I was playing along with some bluesy backing tracks through a Vox AD30VT modeling amp. I dialed in a nice jazzy tone, added some delay and I am VERY happy with the sound. I had expected the original batteries to have fizzled by now, but 11 months and hundreds of hours later, they are still good. I do need to mention that they had the price for the passive pickup on the stack of these active ones, which we discovered after it was in my guitar, so I got the deal of the year! Pay the extra, it will be worth it spread out over the years.warren foil
I have had an Epiphone EJ200 for a few years now, great guitar, great sound BUT the Shadow e-sonic pickups were not. The under-saddle became very noisy and finally gave up. The neck pickup became noisy and pretty much unusable. Stripped the lot out and fitted this single humbucker, easy to fit and sounds superb.Reviewed by Andertons Music Co.
Been looking for a pick up to amplify my Gibson J45. Love the natural sound of that guitar and wanted something that would stay true to the acoustic tone. Tried the rare earth HB after reading the other reviews and was not disappointed. Absolutely great pu. Keeps as true to the natural sound as anything I've heard. I actually like this better than the factory expression system in my Taylor and I thought that was really good until I heard the Fishman. It's dead quiet too. No hum or feedback due to the humbucking features. You get volume control only with this but I prefer to use the amp to control everything else anyway, so no down side for me as is. I knew the minute I heard this, it was going to stay with the Gibson for good, so I permanently mounted it. Very easy to do if you're handy with tools but not for the faint of heart. You will need to drill out the end pin hole on your guitar to accommodate the end jack and will also need to shorten the lead that's supplied and do some soldering. Take it to a professional if any of this makes you nervous. Was so thrilled, I bought a second one within a week for another acoustic I have and permanently mounted that one too. Just be sure to leave enough lead wire slack to allow you to take the pu out of the hole for battery changes. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to amplify a straight acoustic and wants to stay as true to its original tone as possible.

8. L. R. Baggs M80? Magnetic Soundhole Pickup, Black
Product Details:
The soul of your guitar is in the body from the tone woods that its made of, to the fine details in the way it was put together. standard magnetic pickups hear only dry strings, resulting in anelectric sound that omits the true acoustic voice of your guitar. in contrast, the m80 hears the entire frequency range of the tone woods, thereby contributing warmth and complexity to your amplified sound. the secret of the m80 is a patented, free floating humbucking coil that acts as a 3d body sensor. as the soundboard resonates in all 3 dimensions, a proprietary suspension allows each axis of the humbucking coil to respond with the guitars movement. a resonate body signal is produced and blended with the strings to faithfully capture your guitar like no other magnetic pickup ever created. the m80 also gives you the choice of active or passive settings with the flick of the switch. the active setting engages a preamp with built in eq and audiophile circuitry for thathigh fidelity sound bags is known for. switch to the passive setting and bypass the preamp for a battery free performance. other features of the m80 include a battery check, volume control and adjustable pole pieces for perfect balance between the strings.

Reviews:
Good news: Great sound reproduction. Bad news: If the sound hole is less than 4 inches (think OM guitars), the pickup won't go in despite Baggs advertising it will fit into a hole 3.55 or greater. How do they do it? I called tech support and (are you ready for this?) they told me I had to REMOVE THE CLAMPS to get the pickup into the hole and then somehow REPLACE THEM once the pickup was in it's proper place. Good trick! Well you can FUHGEDDABOUDIT! I tried and it is very difficult and annoying to jury rig this pickup into the hole. There goes portability as once it's in, you won't want to ever remove it. Oh, but you will HAVE TO to change the batteries once they go dead and since I do not always need amplified sound, I am left with an UGLY pickup in the guitar. I find this to be incredulous that Baggs could not make the unit a little smaller so it would fit ANY standard soundhole. It's not like OM guitars are so rare. I Returned it. I don't care how good it sounds. This is an unacceptable ****DESIGN FLAW****. RETURNEDtheMaestro
Now you can go to the store, pick out the best sounding/playing guitar in your budget and buy it regardless of whether it has built-in electronics. If you need to amplify the sound, it takes $250 and 15 minutes to get an accurate and natural acoustic sound from your guitar. No permanent modifications (you may have to increase the diameter of the strap button hole, but its not a visible modification), easy installation (remove it in 10 secounds if you don't need it) and beautiful, natural acoustic sound like its mic'd but without feedback issues. I love it. Active or passive, transferable between multiple guitars, low battery light, etc. It has a slight buzz/hum – you can hear the same buzz/hum on the LR Baggs demo video; but its no different than a buzz/hum from an electric guitar. Once your playing, you don't notice it. I don't think you can get a better amplified sound from an acoustic guitar for less. I have a Martin with the Fishman F1 Aura and a Yamaha with the Studio Response Technology pickup/preamp system. The M80 is roughly equal to the F1 for overall sound and superior to the Yamaha; the M80 is the most natural, acoustic sounding.
I wanted to use this pickup in place of the under saddle piezio system on my J-45 when playing out. The pickup actually sounds great and blows away the on-board system, however the unit was too heavy and difficult to install without loosening and undoing the strings. It actually made a couple of marks on the sounds hole and I think it is not for me. I also was getting some feedback but I did not want to adjust the screws because I was going to return it. If you are going to install it and leave it in the sound hole of your guitar, it works well.Mike

I use this pickup in an Ovation AL Demiola guitar. I've always had problems with the pickup that was original to the guitar. The Black stack soundhole pickup solved all my problems and it doesn't require batteries.I actually kept the same settings on my fishman preamp pedal. the sound quality of the pickup blows away the original equipment Ovation pickup. I think most people would be pleased with the sound and it's easy to install.Greg M

11. K&k Pure Classic Pickup For Nylon String Classical Guitar
Product Details:
The pure classic is a transducer-only system. no battery, no onboard electronics, just the pure pickups. don't be fooled by the sound of some competitors' "thin sounding" passive systems. the pure systems are definitely different. they sound full and rich and have sufficient output to drive most amps and pa systems directly, without a preamp advantages of the pure guitar system the special pure surface transducers transmit a significant portion of the soundboard because they are not as close to the strings as an under-saddle pickup. each of the 4 transducers is designed to pick up a specific string pair, but also "listens" to the adjacent area around the bridge. the pure pickups are not under pressure and therefore do not sound percussive or harsh. the pure system reproduces all strings nicely balanced, a known problem with under-saddle pickups. unlike under-saddle pickups which passively can sound thin and trebley, the passive pure system puts out a nicely balanced, warm, full range signal. the pure classic includes four high quality transducer pickups, to allow even distribution around the center brace found on most nylon string guitars. if you do not have a center brace, consider using the pure mini pickup system instead.

received this product as advertised I was looking for something to replace my undersaddle pickup for an epi that I have and after a couple of tweaks it works fine I think Shadow should replace the one piece cord for a male mini to female 1/4 encased similar to a mandolin or violin style The volume unit is quite wobbly so this type would help Once the saddle is straight at right angle to strings works greatwageca4
