I have an Ovation legend that came with a poor quality saddle pickup that was cutting out on me so i went cheap and got a Seymour Duncan woody humbucker that has a terrible ac buzz, so I decided to try the M1A. Installation was a snap and bang I was back in business. This thing sounds great with my radial pz delux preamp. It is very bright but also has a rich low end. I had to dial back the high mids a bit but it eq's really well. It is also very active and brings out some of the imperfections of my instrument i had not previously noticed due to the extreme clarity this pickup brings to the table. I also play a bit of percussion on the body of my guitar and this unit picks up the finger tapping on the sound board well (the Seymour Duncan did not). For the price this is a great pickup. My only real disappointment is that I cannot use my sans amp distortion anymore because the M1A is so active it squeals wildly with feedback when overdriven. Oh and I had to put a little piece of clear tape on the volume knob so I would stop bumping it down when playing aggressively.Rarefaction
I've always used a mic to record my acoustic guitar, but the ongoing search for new ways of recording and new tones led me to purchase and install the LR Baggs M1 Passive pickup. I'm glad I did. It sounds great and offers a new sound palette that has expanded both my recording and musical horizons. I'm using a Martin 000-18 and the pickup is running through a Great River Me1nv into an Apogee Duet interface. I tried plugging directly into the Duet, but the Great River had a more appealing sound and needed less gain than the Duet. The only flaw that I can find in the Baggs M1 is the temporary installation method which requires that the external cord cannot be removed without removing the entire pickup. I chose the temporary installation because I didn't want to drill holes into an expensive guitar. I assumed that while the pickup would stay in the sound hole, the jack/plug assembly would be accessible and that the cord could be removed. It turns out that I was wrong. You can't just unplug the chord. This means that every time you put the guitar back in it's case, you also have to pack ten feet of cord. It's not a huge issue, but you would think that the pickup would be designed with this in mind.d willis
I have the passive version. I use this with my 1978 Yamaha FG770s. It's the best sound I have ever gotten out of this guitar. Plays really nicely into the acoustic channel of my Boss Katana 50 (Mk 1). I can get the tones I need just by using the amps Bass, Mid and Treble and get full range from full-bodied finger-picking to bright top percussion. I liked that I could do a test install with an external cable before committing to a permanent install.kcd1961

The pure classic is a transducer-only system. no battery, no onboard electronics, just the pure pickups. don't be fooled by the sound of some competitors' "thin sounding" passive systems. the pure systems are definitely different. they sound full and rich and have sufficient output to drive most amps and pa systems directly, without a preamp advantages of the pure guitar system the special pure surface transducers transmit a significant portion of the soundboard because they are not as close to the strings as an under-saddle pickup. each of the 4 transducers is designed to pick up a specific string pair, but also "listens" to the adjacent area around the bridge. the pure pickups are not under pressure and therefore do not sound percussive or harsh. the pure system reproduces all strings nicely balanced, a known problem with under-saddle pickups. unlike under-saddle pickups which passively can sound thin and trebley, the passive pure system puts out a nicely balanced, warm, full range signal. the pure classic includes four high quality transducer pickups, to allow even distribution around the center brace found on most nylon string guitars. if you do not have a center brace, consider using the pure mini pickup system instead.

K&k sound pure mini + pre-phase the pre-phase preamp is a miniature, onboard preamp that provides volume control and a phase switch for pure pickups. it provides truly astonishing sound quality in an extremely small and light-weight package! the addition of the phase switch is one of the most important tools for live sound amplification of any acoustic instrument. your unplugged acoustic guitar resonates in a given phase. the amplified sound needs to match this phase! out of phase sound feeds back, has phase cancellations on some notes, and sounds quacky and tinny overall. phase problems cannot be sufficiantly solveld with eq. any amp/pa/effect-unit/preamp may or may not flip the phase, the only way to be sure that your guitar is in phase with the amp-sound is a phase switch in your signal chain! in our opinion a phase switch is the #1 control for any amplified acoustic instrument. the volume control wheel allows for convenient adjustment during performance. with the pre-phase you are able to plug your acoustic guitar into any amp or pa directly. simply use the eq on the amp or mixer channel to adjust your tone. battery life is about 150 hours with alkaline battery. you can order the pre-phase as an integrated element with any single-source passive pickup, or as an add-on for an existing pickup. simply unscrew the existing endpin jack, remove it from the endpin hole, and plug it into the 1/4" plug of the pre-phase add-on. the 1/4" plug has a self-adhesive fastener, which can be secured inside the guitar. the lightweight thumbwheel control mounts with a peel-and-stick installation to the inner edge of the soundshole. mount the new endpin jack into the endpin hole, and you're done!

As a professional luthier/guitar technician, I have installed several of these amazing transducers, and am continually astounded by their performance, which has a natural warmth and tonal range heretofore unheard in this type of unit. I highly recommend this pickup for ALL acoustic guitars which can accommodate one. It isn't the easiest to install, and will most likely require the help of a tech like myself; but the results are BEYOND EXCELLENT; take my word for it. Additionally, this passive pickup does not require a battery-powered on-board preamp, though it works with outside preamps, EQs and direct boxes equally well (it doesn't need them for sufficient volume). Just don't bother with the others. These are awesome. I go through either a Helix using the mic preamp, or K&Ks DI box. I've fitted four of these myself (on two Larrivees, a Guo and an Atkin OM37) . They trounce the competition. You will _never_ get the sound of a Neumann KM84 professionally positioned and EQd so don't bother trying and don't stuff your guitar with half a ton of hardware because it _will_ kill the tone. Be aware and be careful when installing the pickups.It is easy to get them to close to the bridge pins.My 6th string head or ball just barely clears the base side pickup. I think I was lucky. The sound of this K&K pickup is excellent. Very balanced and clear.I would give the finger picking or single note flat picking sound 5 stars. Struming sound 4 1/2 stars. Just a nice accurate sound. Works well with the line setting on my QSC K8.2 speaker. It also works very well with the instrument setting. There is just more volume on the instrument setting. Fully functional and in excellent condition. removed from a gretsch gin rickey model guitar. guitar unfortunately suffered a severe neck break so i salvaged the pickup. pickup simply mounts across sound hole. (5 1/2 inches across). the cord and input can either be installed internally or externally. you d have to drill a hole to fit the input internally if there isn t an exhausting hole. then it just screws down with a hex nut and washer and the strap button screws in as well. cord measures approximately 20 and 1/4 inches long from base of pickup to end.

I really can't find any cons. This little device is just so easy to set up and install. Plug it into either an acoustic amp or into an electric guitar amp., the results are unbelievably good. I'm running it through a Boss GT1 Effects Processor and into a Fender Mustang amp and it is just superb. It sounds pretty good but the output is a little weak for me. No volume/output power control. I also recently bought the De'Armond sound hole pup. I think I like that better—but this is still pretty good. The output was a little weak to drive an old Peavey 20 amp—but the body of the guitar is also smaller than the other guitar that I put the DeArmond pup on. The Gretsch name kind of beckoned to me knowing how wonderful the big jazz box Gretsch guitars sound. Just after Christmas 2012 I had this installed in my Epiphone EJ200. I usually obsess over things like this for a while, reading review after review of the choices and looking at vids on YouTube. Finally I pulled the trigger on this one, and I must say it's pretty darn impressive. It gives a really really close to true acoustic sound, but where it totally shines is when you throw in a bit of chorus or some other effect. Five minutes ago I was playing along with some bluesy backing tracks through a Vox AD30VT modeling amp. I dialed in a nice jazzy tone, added some delay and I am VERY happy with the sound. I had expected the original batteries to have fizzled by now, but 11 months and hundreds of hours later, they are still good. I do need to mention that they had the price for the passive pickup on the stack of these active ones, which we discovered after it was in my guitar, so I got the deal of the year! Pay the extra, it will be worth it spread out over the years.warren foil
I have had an Epiphone EJ200 for a few years now, great guitar, great sound BUT the Shadow e-sonic pickups were not. The under-saddle became very noisy and finally gave up. Been looking for a pick up to amplify my Gibson J45. Love the natural sound of that guitar and wanted something that would stay true to the acoustic tone. Tried the rare earth HB after reading the other reviews and was not disappointed. Absolutely great pu. Keeps as true to the natural sound as anything I've heard. I actually like this better than the factory expression system in my Taylor and I thought that was really good until I heard the Fishman. It's dead quiet too. No hum or feedback due to the humbucking features. You get volume control only with this but I prefer to use the amp to control everything else anyway, so no down side for me as is. I knew the minute I heard this, it was going to stay with the Gibson for good, so I permanently mounted it. Very easy to do if you're handy with tools but not for the faint of heart. You will need to drill out the end pin hole on your guitar to accommodate the end jack and will also need to shorten the lead that's supplied and do some soldering. Take it to a professional if any of this makes you nervous. Was so thrilled, I bought a second one within a week for another acoustic I have and permanently mounted that one too. Just be sure to leave enough lead wire slack to allow you to take the pu out of the hole for battery changes. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to amplify a straight acoustic and wants to stay as true to its original tone as possible.

I have experiences with various pickups, mostly the passive kind, that have left me wanting. The last kind, also a Fishman, had a rubber covering for the sound hole that interfered with my finger picking, and then having the cord dribble out from the front of the sound hold left something to be desired too. This unit, though on the pricey side, is just what the doctor ordered. Clear, crisp tone – sounds like your guitar! And you get to play to your heart's content with whether you want the pickups or the mic or both to capture that sound. I can tell you that you can probably spend the rest of your life seeking that "sweet spot" for the position of the condenser mic. This pick up is relatively easy to install permanently depending on your skill level. The sound straight through the amp is very good and can be enhanced with an EQ There appears to be a slight difference in looks between the photos and what you get. The photos show a lighter tort color with what appears to be rounded edges. The unit sent is considerably darker with beveled Tort/White/Black. Very minor difference, probably 1st to 2nd generation of the pick up. Certainly doesn't effect the performance any. Overall an outstanding pickup sweetened by the fact that I was able to use a 20% discount coupon 🙂C.
I use a magnetic PUP in conjunction with a set of K&K piezos. With the Sunrise, I would try and get as close to an acoustic sound as I could and then dial in the K&K's for that added shimmer. I can get much closer to the natural sound with the Angel as it has it's own kind of natural openness. With the piezos added, it is stunning. With the K&K/Sunrise combination, I have had to send the signal out to the K&K preamp in order to get my mix. I plan on getting the whole Angel System, as you can get your mix from the sound hole. The whole Angel system sells for a little less then just the Sunrise Magnietic PUP. What a great deal! I have been waiting for someone to do this for a long time. Thanks, DiMarzio! I have the Sunrise and have been using it for years. My only complaint about it is the it has a mid range honk and a "woofiness" that I can't eq out. Somehow Dimarzio was able to give me what I was lacking from the Sunrise, but at $100 less. Hey, it is from DiMarzio…what would you expect? Quality is top notch. Nice and solid and weighs about the same as the Sunrise. Again, the best thing out there for years in a magnetic PUP has been the Sunrise. DiMarzio built a better PUP but for $100 less.Rick W.

This thing buzzes worse than a single coil next to a neon light. I got the string ground from Taylor and it helped a little but still had more buzz than my Telecaster. Don't waste your money. A company named JJB Electronics makes a pickup for the GS Mini that actually works. Go check them out. I got this pickup free with my GSMini and I still feel like a payed too much.Mr. Sunday Strummer
In all fairness, if you want a pickup to bang around with a garage band, this will probably work just fine for you, especially if you use a pre-amp or a pedal with a gain control. It is certainly easy to install. You should get a string grounding setup from Taylor before you install the pickup, so you can do the entire installation at one time. If you are looking for a recording pickup, or play in quiet venues, this won't do it! Easy installation, if that what is important. This is a passive single-coil pickup. It is very susceptible to noise and has very little output gain, which make the overall signal-to-noise ratio very poor. Taylor makes an add-on string grounding system which eliminates most of the 60Hz hum that the pickup has in all except the most prestine environments, but the amp gain has to be turned up so high that there is still a bunch of noise produced. The pickup and attached connector seem to be made and assembled well. Noting the comments in the Features rating, I would have expected Taylor to come up with a much better product for their exceptional guitar! As noted above.dockhound

First of all, to those who are complaining about hum from this pickup, the problem is not the pickup but probably the amp you are using. Either you don't have your EQ set right or you just have a cheap amp . I have a Fishman Loudbox Mini and I don't have any issues with hum or feedback when I'm using this pickup. Upgrade to a quality amp and you won't have any of these issues you speak of. Now , I was previously using a Dean Markley Pro Mag SC-1 and this baby easily blows it away in terms of both sound and tone. I have my own solo Acoustic act and this pickup has held it's own already at my gigs. It's made my Taylor Big Baby sound more like a Taylor 810 . Definitely worth the price.Jeffo46
I've used an SA-3SC from the Woody Series for a few years and found it to be a really good pick up that enriches the sound of my acoustic guitars. I've always assumed the SA-3SC to be a single coil, and the SA-3HC to be a humbucker, so I was rather expecting the SA-3HC to be able to produce an even mellower sound than the SA-3SC. Initially I found the two to be very similar in sound and given that the SA-3HC also carries a higher price tag, I found this to be a bit disappointing. However, I've only played straight into the amp so far, so it may be that if used in combination with a pre-amp it can give a different range in tones from the SA-3SC, so I'm happy to persevere with it. So in conclusion, it's a great pick up, but the real differences between the pick ups in the Woody Series may require certain pre-amp settings in order to be appreciated. Others may disagree, and this of course is just my personal impression. But as a standalone pick up the SA-3HC itself is a great, and well worth buying.mixalis0209
I had a Dean Markley soundhole pickup for my guitar and left it in my hardshell case in a storage locker. I've played my acoustic around the house and campfires, etc. but didn't really need the case since I played out with my electric. Anyway, at some point, for whatever reason, the case and said pickup disappeared. I had an acoustic Christmas gig coming up and needed a new pickup. A friend of mine suggested the Seymour Duncan because it was supposed to give a "warmer" tone, so I went in that direction. One word – fabulous. Easy to install, enough clearance so strings didn't twang off it, and the sound was top notch. Made my 20+ year old acoustic guitar sound better than it has in years. No cracks, pops, or cut-outs. Very good pick-up and easy to fit without chopping up my old guitar. One slight issue: the poles are spaced slightly too far apart for my Gibson J50. Optimum sound hole size info is provided in the blurb but not string spacing. I can get some overlap on 1st and 6th strings by turning the pickup so it does the job. Since this is a passive pick up it does require a substantial increase in volume from your amp or input. I run it through a red eye twin DI which helps greatly and can adjust the gain. I combined this pick up with a K&K and gives an incredible sound. The pole pieces do need to be adjusted and tailored to your liking. The B and e pieces need to be dropped down significantly. For me I needed to increase the base E, A and D to give a fuller sound. When I compare the K&K to this pick up their pretty close. The K&K has a better definition and clarity but they are close and for some reason when I put them together through the red eye twin di they sound magical together. You really need to adjust the K&K input down and crank up the black angle since it's allot lower input. 50/50 mix of the two sound great.G

I really love the K&K Big Twin. I have them installed in about 9 jaranas of many different sizes and also in a requinto jarocho, punteador and a bandmate's Leona. I have a 1953 Gibson L-48 which doesn't have a cantilevered fretboard. So the string height is not really high enough to slide a slimbucker on the top pickup beneath the strings. The solution for me was to install an internal passive transducer pickup.I have used the K&K Mini before with marginal results. But this Big Twin really makes my vintage L-48 archtop sound actually like it does acoustically. It is my understanding that the K&K Big Twin is aimed towards the thicker topped guitars and it, in my opinion, does the job as it should.
