Zoom 500 Guitar Pedal For Sale (2024 Update)

First of all let me say I also have the G1ON and bought the G1X Four for the enhanced features and so I'd have one with the expression pedal. I sold all my tube amps when I was laid off, retired and moved to Mexico. My reference point is tweed and blackface era tube amps. I gotta say, once you learn how to dial in the tones you want, these little plastic boxes do a pretty decent job of amp and effects modeling. Like the G1ON, the G1X 4 does a good job of imitating the touch and volume control dynamics of a cranked tube amp at any volume. I really like the Deluxe Reverb, AC30 and DC30 simulations. The G1ON has more vintage style amp types to choose from, and in that regard it is more useful to e. Two kinds of spring reverb, one eats up a lot of memory but really sounds lush like an external unit along with the other types (room, plate, hall, church, etc.). Tremolo is built into the Fender models that have tremolo along with a couple of very configurable trems and rotating speaker effects. The G1 4 does NOT have the Z Organ effect the G1ON does, boo hoo. Beyond that, there are tons of effects to play with and they all sound good to my ears. I currently have 3 small amp setups. 1. Quilter 101 mini docked in their 10" BlockDock cab. 2. Quilter MicroBlock 45 pedal teamed with a 5E3 pine cab with a Emi Legend 12" and 3. an old Carvin SX50 1×12". I can get all three do to do the Deluxe Reverb,Vox AC15/30, E and F series Tweed tones that don't make me miss my tube amps. Wish I would have had the G1ON and the 17.7lb Quilter 1×10" combo back when I was in a blues band and gigging. Interface improvements from the G1ON… Improved display allows for more descriptive/longer patch names. Four pots act as master vol, bass, middle, treble during performance mode for global tone and volume tweeking. The four pots also make adjusting settings easier. For several years now, my pedalboard has had only ONE guitar "FX" pedal. First it was the G1Xon. Now it's the G1Xfour. I play both acoustic AND electric thru the pedal, and they BOTH sound great! Though I've played for over 40 years, I'm not a professional musician and rarely play out; but I do play a lot at home and IMO this is the best VALUE "name brand" guitar multi-FX pedal on the market. The Zoom G1on multi-effects/modeling stompbox is a surprisingly capable device that's made all the more compelling a value for its ability to run for hours on 4 AA batteries. It has its limitations, of course, but you can find it used or refurbished all over eBay for around $50 shipped – and that's a steal by any yardstick! To begin with, the 2.0 BIOS update gives you 100 factory patches to start with. As with most multi-effects/modeling devices, many of these are near-duplicates and/or near-useless for most purposes – but you can freely modify to or completely replace them with custom patches that better suit your needs with a littel effort. Here's where a free, third-party patch librarian called zoomlib is nearly indispensible. It's available for Windows or Mac computers, and it allows you to backup patches, change their order, add multiple copies of the same patch and so forth. Just search for zoomlib and it'll show up in the top few results in any search engine (eBay frowns on external links in these reviews, or I'd just post it here). That last capability – putting multiple copies of the same patch in consecutive slots is the key to getting the most out of the G1on and its slightly-bigger brother the G1Xon (which features an expression pedal, but is otherwise the same device). Both pedals have zero in the way of real-time control over parameters like distortion, echo, modulation (chorus, flange, etc.). The way to deal with that is to set up consecutively-numbered patches that are identical to begin with. Then add a distortion, for instance, to the second iteration, so that, when you're actually using the device, you can, in effect, kick in distortion without otherwise altering your sound simply by stomping the UP footswitch, then kick it off at the end of your solo by stomping the DOWN switch. For a different basic patch, do the same kind of thing to add gain or effects to it – and so on. Editing patches is kind of a pain. You HAVE to do it via the pedal's menus, because there's no patch editing software available for these guys (zoomlib is strictly limited to backing up, re-ordering, and adding already-edited patches). You start with an amp/speaker model, then add effects or sound-shaping modules to the chain. (Note that some effects are CPU-intensive, which limits how many you can have in a single chain before the device hits a wall. It will, however, tell you when you try to exceed its processing power – and refuse to let you add that effect, etc. to the current patch's chain.) Each amp model and device has controls for things like gain, depth, tone, etc. Which controls are avaiable depends on the device that's being modeled (so, for instance, the OD-250 model has only tone and drive, whereas the Rat model has 3 other dials to play with). You can usually get away with up to 4 devices (including the amp/speaker model you start with) in a chain, but 5 is really pushing it. To use zoomlib (or to upgrade the BIOS), you'll need a USB 2.0 male to USB-mini female cable, which is not included. Nor is an external power supply (I recommend the Snark for that. It's inexpensive, very quiet, and has enough power to run three stompboxes on a daisy-chain cable.) 4 AA batteries ARE included, which is a nice extra. And the fact that these guys will run on batteries for 8 hours or so is really nice, because that means you don't have to drag along an AC adapter to lose or break. (These units will also run off of USB power from your laptop or desktop computer, so there's that, too.) Note that you have to plug a 1/" cable into the input to turn the unit on. The 1/4" output jack – which is confgurable for either line- or instrument-level output – doubles as a stereo headphone jack, as well (and it's auto-sensing, so you don't have to do any special configuration just to use it as a headphone amplifier). Make sure you adjust the system settings for alkaline or rechargeable Li-ON batteries, depending on which you use (the unit comes with 4 alkaline AA's). This is a great little stick-it-in-your-bag-and-go device for jams, although you could actually use it for performances, as long as you put some planning into setting up and sequencing your patches ahead of time. It is NOT as capable or as faithful at modeling as something like a Line 6 POD-HD, or a Digitech RP1000 – but it's just a fraction of the cost of those pedals, so you really can't complain about its limitations in comparison to those excellent, professional-quality, EXPENSIVE devices. I'm very happy with mine. Chances are, if you buy one knowing its limitations in advance, you will be just as happy with yours …thomst

I bought this pedal primarily as a looper and reverb for the end of my signal chain, and it fulfills those functions quite well. The reverbs sound really solid compared to the reverb on my Fender Deluxe, and the looper has most (not all) of the features I wanted: dedicated stop/start pedal, visual feedback for loop progress, and 30 second loop time, which is plenty. It does not, however, save loops, which would have been really nice.Another nice surprise is that the drum samples included are excellent. However, they interact oddly with the looper. Normally, the looper activates the moment you press the start pedal, but when you have a drum track going, you have to do wait for a count in before you start your loop. I don't really understand why it works this way.So that was the good. The bad is that half the presets are incredibly loud and add a horrific shrieking/feedback noise when you switch to them. I'm honestly afraid of scrolling through everything and it's prevented me from exploring a lot of the other features the pedal offers.The other is that the controls are a bit difficult to use and overly complicated.Anyway, a mixed bag. Good looper UI, with decent sound quality with great reverb effects and a bunch of usable drum tracks seem like an excellent value for $60, but i find the interface difficult to use and the preset "profiles" unusable and downright earsplitting at times.Daniel

This is my first guitar processor. I really wanted something that I could try out different things like the flanger and the reverb and the phaser etc without having to invest in a bunch of different pedals. This thing is awesome. It comes with a bushel of pre mades which you can alter or build your own. Only downside is there is no true bypass, you have to build an empty setting and name it bypass otherwise it is always on. It is older technology but oh what fun and so many things you can do and so many luscious tones. It's the tones man that will get you. The tones man. Get 1while you can. I could spend all day yapping about this pedal…In my travels i've tried countless pedals, but got tired of having 'too many' pedals. The weight, the time it took to hook it all up. I also busk, or play where electricity isn't available, and wanted a setup where i could make one trip with everything, and keep the weight down. I've always been a fan of ZOOM products, so trying out the Multistomp series was a no-brainer for me. The 50G met all my requirements, and exceed them all after i got one and started using it. Tones that are as good as any higher priced pedal, the versatility is second to none, and the price is killer for what this pedal can do. I would say the the Bluetooth version was my favorite, then the 70CDR, then the 50G, with the 50G's new 3.0 update, the 50 G is now my favorite pedal…period. The 50G started with maybe 50 patches, now it has 172, and best of all it has the Exciter patch, which to me is required on any pedal board. All i can suggest is watch the countless demo videos of this pedal. I would recommend this pedal for any level of guitarist, i would also recommend the MS-70CDR, watch the demo videos of the 70-CDR vs Strymons…amazing I cant say enough good things about the 50G, i believe it's near the perfect all around pedal. The MS-50G pedal is first class. It is every bit as clean, quiet, and well built as the Boss pedals. It is not a replacement for the Boss line. Zoom pedals have a character of their own. Personally, I like the Zoom tone. But I'm not a guitar player. There is a great ~15 minute YouTube instructional video for the MS-50G. I got over the learning curve for writing and storing effects by watching this video, then I bought pedal. It replaces several pieces of my high quality studio gear when I need fast results that are of high level audio quality. Zoom delivers with this product. After I watched this video I purchased the pedal. I also like my G1X as a companion to this pedal. The G1X has a nice volume/expression pedal.Sean

I needed something for my living room and practicing while watching TV late at night without a full pedal board or multi-effects box. This along with a Boss RC-3 and a mini mixer for my wireless headphones provides everything I have in my studio at a mini level. The sounds are good enough. There are enough options in sound to play most anything. Eventually I'll try this little beast as a sub for my full pedal board and see how it works in a live jam. One pedal to do everything. It's not perfect but it is great. I wish Zoom would provide updates to it and a better manager. It's pretty old by today's standards and if Zoom provided updated files they would sell even more if these great little boxes. Really loving this, getting back to playing after about 20 years away, got this multi effects pedal and I’m playing every day, plenty amp sims and effects to play with, got about 5 favourites already, not played about enough with the blank slots so can’t say too much about that. Drum beats are good for jamming along with and keepin time. Love the looper, really cool for dual parts ( I play a lot of iron maiden) and for noodling over your own backing track. Went for this one with the expression pedal, not using it much but that’s probably my style more than anything, it works. I’m using a standard mini usb to power, not tried recording yet, busy playing and having fun. Using headphones mostly, sounds great, put it through my 30 year old Marshall when I get the chance, sounds awesome. Bottom line, I’m just messing about in the spare room, having fun. Not a performer or gigging or anything. This has everything I need/want and the rest. Price is pretty good for what your getting. Should actually get a refund on this. Seemed like a good product but tried to connect with Guitar Lab to add effects. I got connected, added a couple of FX but lost some factory effects that were pretty good (Comp). Then, tried to connect again to get these back but can't connect anymore. Tried 2 computers as well, many times. Anyway, the box is stuck with FX it has now so, not good. Poor product if you can't get it to function properly.Zoom Man

Overall: Looking at the G5n as ONLY a guitar multi-effects pedal still makes it well worth the price, but that would be selling it WAY short in terms of what this self-contained digital beast can do. For those of us who also play keyboards, synths, drum machines, and bass, think of this as an entire rack of beautiful effects processing options that open up a whole world of pro tone sculpting possibility. Yes, these effects by themselves do sound digital (because they ARE), but if you start with a good analog sound source and finish with a mic’d up tube amp or quality tube DI, you can capture some serious pro quality sounds with beautifully complex depth and texture. Line6 and Boss both charge significantly more for products that do absolutely NOTHING better than the G5n. So why dump any more money than absolutely necessary into a digital effects unit that you know will become a doorstop eventually anyway? The Zoom G5n delivers every last nuance of the best effects units available on the market today, and it does it all at a price you can afford to replace in a few years. PROS * Equal or better sound quality than competing products from Line6 and Boss, all at a much lower price. * Better and more intuitive user interface than Line6 and Boss competition. * The “ZNR” noise reduction effect performs amazingly well, and can be tweaked perfectly for any application. Especially for those of us who hate unnecessary pickup and amp noise in our recordings, this is worth the price of the entire unit alone. I’ve actually paid the same price as this unit for a Waves noise reduction plugin that I don’t like as much as the one inside the G5n. * No wimpy 12AX7 tube output that everybody knows won't make much difference, and which just becomes a maintenance liability over time. The old G5 had one of these, and Zoom should be applauded for ditching the gimmick. * Takes a huge load off of your DAW in terms of effects plugins. Also, unlike your DAW, you can monitor any instrument through the G5n without any noticeable latency. * The two tone booster dials are great for when you’ve been crafting new patches through headphones, but then you want to plug the G5n into your amp and you’re frustrated because you don’t hear the same frequency balance out of your amp that you did in your headphones (coming directly out of the G5n headphone jack). The two tone booster dials let you tweak the EQ of your frequency response (in a pleasant and natural/analog sounding way) so that your amp sounds accurate tonally to what you were hearing in the headphones. This keeps you from having to save two differently tweaked patches of the same effects chain just so you can hear the correct frequency balance through either your headphones or your amp. CONS * USB recording interface is convenient for recording rough ideas, but not realistic as a pro DI/converter. Luckily the stereo ¼” analog out jacks do a good job of letting you use your tube preamps for DI recording anyway, but it would be nice not to have to pass through an extra layer of D/A conversion if not absolutely necessary. * Amp & cabinet models are excellent tools for tone shaping, but no they don’t sound like the real deal (and no digital emulation ever will if you're listening back through quality DAC). Nonetheless, that doesn’t mean running reasonable gain settings on these amps and cabs into the clean channel of your tube amp can’t still create very impressively detailed recording tones. * Some people have reported that too many effects in a chain causes the DSP chip in the G5n to overload, but I’ve found the only time that happens is when you’re trying to chain multiple amps and cabinet models altogether, and it’s not something you (sonically) should want to attempt anyway. With one amp and one cabinet selected, you can still add a compressor, delay, reverb, and chorus, etc. There's plenty of DSP here to get you into trouble (in a good way). TIP: The modeled amp "heads" ften don’t sound as good as simply running one of the distortion pedals directly into a modeled cabinet. Requires less DSP too.Christopher

When i started looking for a replacement to many analogue fx processors I didn't expect to find anything asa a combo that had good clean output. I tested the GT100,GS80, Line-6 and a few lower level competitors to calibrate usefulness and reliability versus audio clarity using a set of AE-1 Studio Monitors routed through a Fender 100 Series Tube Amp. The results came down to either the Gt100 (which I found a little shallow) versus this Zoom G5n (btw -the G3xn is identical but doesnt have capacity). The thing that sold me on the G5n is its user interface. Simply the best and easiest to program on the fly. It is a lot of fun but you have to discipline what you want to achieve. It comes with a stack of patches but I suggest buyers to check and do the firmware update and get the latest patches (released monthly plus there is an Artist list of User Patches) = 1000's but you'll make your own. It isn't hard. The audio output on this G5n is a lot deeper and if you run the Boost you can get rich warm tone from a digital amp like the Vox 30 I tested. When using a digital combo amp you need turn off all the FX and use the default Amp or find an amp that doesn't distort the clarity from G5n. The Amp FX on the G5n are better through a clean digital setup. Analogues need to make sure head is also clean setup except where you just use G5n for FX and remove Amps from bank. Either way the device is very user friendly for harmony with getting the job done quickly and move on to playing guitar as this is a tool not an instrument.3times3times

The Zoom G5n is an excellent choice for those seeking a multi effect platform or even those wishing to add pedal effects to their guitar tone and who are on a tight budget. Your pedal chain is easily customisable with all parameters visible and tweekable at the turn of a knob. With 5 descent amp Sims which already sound fairly authentic, when edited you can get pretty close to the amps which they are emulating. Purists, or gear snobs will always argue that "you can't beat a real tube amp" or " Kemper, Helix, Axe fx are better" they may offer more but I doubt if they sound 5, 10 or even 20 times better in line with there cost!! For the price of a "boutique" pedal you can have nearly every pedal your ever likely to need, without the need for a bucket load of patch cables!! Several talented guitarists have posted customised patches on YouTube, covering every genre and the most popular/sought after artists tones. Sure I fancied some of its more expensive competitors but I really don't need the ability, nor do I have the time to deep edit such things as individual components within a particular amp or pedal. I simply wanted something which offered the range of tones and could replicate the sounds of my favourite guitarists, then just plug in and play and the G5n does thatand does it very well!! Pro's Had this pedal for a few weeks now, very pleased as I can plug my passive solid body electric violin straight in and it seems to balance the impedence just fine, so I don't lose the lower frequencies. Battery life is surprisingly good, also there is an eco function that makes the screen less bright for longer life. First thing I did was test it with cheap pound shop batteries, which lasted for a good few hours, so I was impressed as none of my other pedals can handle that. There is a very useful editor which you can download and gives full access to all of the various fx. Was also surprised that Zoom seem to keep adding these individual plug-in type effects. There is one set of patches that you can load in from the editor, created by a Japanese EV player. They are interesting and can be useful. The fx appear to be in a chain, but some seem parallel to my mind, as there is a mix control with some that seems to be a by-pass of some kind. There are quite a lot of different fx and some are aimed at getting that piezo squeek under control, which is important for EV players as the bow hair noise can be a distraction. The EQ fx seem to be aok at filtering out the annoying frequencies. The looper is quite handy for setting up, the frequency response to my ears seemed ok without any noticeable compression. Not many battery loopers out there, so this is ok for a street jam if that is your thing. It's just basic record, overdub x however many you want, stop or delete. This pedal worked well through my amps and like most pedals works well in that situation for live gig work. For studio, I could record DI straight into my DAW, but to gain a really natural sound used additional IR reverb and IR convolution snapshots that I've made. I also have the Zoom A2.1u pedal which is built like a tank but is less easy to program. I wasn't sure about the plastic base of the A1. However, it has a got a solid metal base and feels really strong+ it's light and a handy size, not too big. Unlike some of the floor guitar pedals I've got that take up a whole gig bag. I can set up my favourite patches in any order that I like, the editor makes this very easy. I can overwrite the presets, or re-set back to makers original settings. Makers patch 29 is one of the best octavers I have come across in a pedal like this. Makes a regular EV sound just like a Cello. Cons: There might be IR on this pedal but you can't load in your own and there is no way to get access to edit the convolution fx. I was overly impressed with the Violin pre-sets, but that's true of most pedal presets, you need to put you own to together to suit different EV's you might own. Overall I like this pedal and can see myself using it a lot because it is light, I can edit on the fly, good battery life, good price, ongoing support via the editor. I bought this pedal from Scan computers in Bolton and their service was excellent and they offered the most competitive price, so all good imo.Peak

This is NOT an acoustic guitar pedal! It has useless settings for sax, harmonica, trumpet, WHY ? They're just a bunch of unusable effects for a guitar, maybe a half dozen are useful. The looper is useless, you have to use your hand to get to it, it ONLY records a 30sec loop, not 24 seconds not one measure , 30 sec. And it doesn't start with sound activation, so the delay from when you turn it on stays in the loop, as does the remainder of the 30 seconds !!! What good is that ? And the pedal is right next to a control footswitch, that you WILL keep hitting and changing the setting as you play. There is no rhyme or reason to the lack of organization in the effects order, there isn't any. Bottom line, DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY !Badartdog

The main reason I bought this is that i had a Zoom 405 acoustic effects years ago and loved it. This has the same quality effects. The preset guitar types is surprisingly good, the EC preset is very very good. The rhythm is ok, standard level and useful for sure. Really loving this, getting back to playing after about 20 years away, got this multi effects pedal and I’m playing every day, plenty amp sims and effects to play with, got about 5 favourites already, not played about enough with the blank slots so can’t say too much about that. Drum beats are good for jamming along with and keepin time. Love the looper, really cool for dual parts ( I play a lot of iron maiden) and for noodling over your own backing track. Went for this one with the expression pedal, not using it much but that’s probably my style more than anything, it works. I’m using a standard mini usb to power, not tried recording yet, busy playing and having fun. Using headphones mostly, sounds great, put it through my 30 year old Marshall when I get the chance, sounds awesome. Bottom line, I’m just messing about in the spare room, having fun. Not a performer or gigging or anything. This has everything I need/want and the rest. Price is pretty good for what your getting. Should actually get a refund on this. Seemed like a good product but tried to connect with Guitar Lab to add effects. I got connected, added a couple of FX but lost some factory effects that were pretty good (Comp). Then, tried to connect again to get these back but can't connect anymore. Tried 2 computers as well, many times. Anyway, the box is stuck with FX it has now so, not good. Poor product if you can't get it to function properly.Zoom Man

It works well, covers a lot of different effects (including amps and cabinets), and the user interface is pretty easy to learn. There are some limitations in its capabilities (for instance, there's little memory available to add effects unless you uninstall some of the defaults, and some combinations of effects can't be used because it doesn't have enough processing power), but at this price you have to expect that. One thing they could improve without adding cost to the device is the documentation; expect to use your favourite search engine a lot while figuring this thing out.Steve

As with all multi effects pedals, some of the effects are very good, some are fair. Mostly there pretty decent for the price and small platform design. My only issue with it, that I was surprised hadnt already been addressed, is that it only has the ability to create one chain of multiple effect patches. For example, if you need a 3 effect patch for the verse, but maybe only a 1 effect patch for the chorus, and maybe an empty patch (that would be an effect bypass) for the solo, you would create a patch chain and just scroll through the individual patches to get what you need. But then youre done, youve used up the only patch chain. I probably have at least 8 songs a gig that requires this ability, but it only allows for 1 patch chain. Over all its a decent pedal, but this upgrade would make it much more usable.bb2335

I have been through many ME pedals over the years, and this one was one of the best. I especially like having 2 expression pedals so I can do volume control and wah. The pre-sets are so-so. I found a Zoom community site where you get the recipes for patches and found some pretty good ones. I never used the editor software, but learned you need to use MIDI cables. Changing out the vacuum tubes with some known quality ones will give you a good pre-amp boost. I was able to dial in some nice high gain patches that when bumped with the tubes sounded really good. The gain level on the tubes is not programmable to patches, but dialed separately. This is a pain as you will need to adjust the tubes for each patch manually This ME pedal is very good for the cover band player who needs to approximate the tone for many different songs. There are plenty of patch banks and the possibilities are endless. The noise gate function in this pedal is really good. I dialed in some hi-gain patches that would normally feed back and be noisy as hell. The gate keeps it all in check. I also found that the wah wah pedal action and patches are pretty good. The sideways thing is a bit cheesy and the talk box effect is weak. Another problem I encountered, is that is it a pain to get all the different patches on an equal volume level. Some of the more subtle effects like rotary and chorus cannot be made loud enough to match some of the hi- gain settings. This means you need to level set all your favorite effects so that you don't have huge volume differences when switching between them. The tuner display is very small and impossible to see unless you are hunched over it. I ran a pedal tuner in front of this ME to address that problem. Overall, for the cover band or bedroom player, this pedal will keep you busy. For the price if you can find 5 different patches that do what you want, it a good deal. I recently sold mine because I wasn't happy with the by-pass issue and the fact that I only use about 3 effects in my band, so I'm just using a pedal board. I give it 4 stars as it doesn't have true bi-pass; big time tone suck if you want to hear your guitar virgin through your amp. Also, for some of the other issue I've mentioned. Overall, better than the Boss, Korg, and Line 6 MEs that I have owned.abobora

Zoom has been making pedals for a long while, and have proven they have the power to build an excellent pedal! Much like the G9.2tt, which I've used to record an entire album, with better than expected results, this G7.1ut pedal has a lot of the same features, with 1 tube, it's a must have for the serious musician who's struggling out there! The pedal's shell is very rugged and the side bumpers make this very road worthy. The user interface and operation of it is very easy to figure out even for those who aren't tech savvy, although, there are 100's of settings, setting up this pedal to suit your needs is relatively simple. It's very quiet, providing you don't use cheap cords. I've found that cheap cords cause an interference/hum/feedback I don't like, but with a good make of cord, this thing is very quiet until you make it sing! I, honestly, can't think of anything on it that I don't like, besides some of the factory preset sounds, but really that's no reason to bash a great pedal! Thank you for reading my review.
