When I purchased mine I had it sent to my house. 5 days later and it comes in with busted knobs and I had to take it in for a refund. They had another in stock and I took it home. With a setup, this bass is WELL worth its price. The nut width isn't as narrow as I'd prefer, I'm more used to the size of the Jazz bass, but this still plays quite nicely for me. While taking inspiration from many classic instruments, the style manages to be unique, and the bass always gets compliments at shows. Controls are easy enough to become second nature quickly, pots turn nice and smooth, and the selector, treble, and bass knobs all have nice tactile notches at their halfway points which is incredibly helpful. The only reason I took off half a star is the angle of the output jack is just super awkward if you typically use right-angle cables, which I do, and only a little less awkward if you don't. Also, not a reason to avoid buying the bass, but it must be said, CHANGE STRINGS IMMEDIATELY!! This might be TMI, but the grooves in the stock strings would pull on my arm hairs EVERY TIME I rest my arm on the bass (and my mustache hairs when I'd give the bass a little kiss at night)

Ordered one of these (In Pearl White) because of a good experience with another one. Of course I had to do some set up to alleviate fret buzz, adjust neck, string height etc. Once it was set up to my liking and a fresh set of my gauge strings, this bass was ready for just about anything! I have used it for a couple of outdoor shows with medium and very large P.A support and the sound was very good overall. Through my stage amp, I was able to dial in a very usable sound quickly. The bass is very light weight .(Which helps those of us with back issues.) Yet is still able to get a decent tone. The bass I received was a newer model with a poplar body and a Jatoba fret board which still has the characteristics of rosewood (slightly lighter in color) with a hint of a maple type bite. Personally, I liked the overall sound with this particular fret board. Speaking of which, the fret board is very easy to play (when properly set up) with a smooth, fast neck. The electronics are decent enough although the "bass boost" knob should be used sparingly and judiciously just to add some deep flavor on occasion for certain styles. All in all, a pretty decent machine that can easily be used by beginners and seasoned pro's (ok, it won't match up with a "boutique bass" by any means but still a very usable product!) This bass is really amazing for the price of it. The neck is so smooth and a bit thinner than other regular bass, perfect for my small hands and the weight wow it is really light. the built quality is top notch. The sound is really good and you've got plenty of sound you can experiment with it. Overall it's an all rounder bass from beginners to pronelson c.
The Ibanez GSR 200 is one of the best "bang for your buck" basses on the market. They are made with excellent quality, lightweight wood, agathis, maple, rosewood. The onboard P/J pickups and electronics sound good. They play good out of the box but they play excellently if set up by a guitar tech. These were choice basses for many of the bass players supporting MWR tours. Musicians would take Ibanez GRS 200 basses on tour and raffle them off to service members on the last gig.matt4717

Love this thing! I had a problem with the sound on the first one but Musicians Friend got me all straightened out. The midrange sound was really quiet while the highs and lows were loud. They sent me a new one and took the return on the bad one. The replacement sounds great! I had a setup and new strings done by my local music shop and she sounds amazing. Intonation is now spot on. I love the look and feel of this one with all the rounded edges. Love the sound. She has a snarl in the low end that I haven't heard with any other company. I also own a squire 60s classic vibe p bass but i think i like the sound of this one better. Love the sound of this heavy, neck diving beast. There's lots of tone to play with using the 5-way pickup selector. If played light enough you can avoid the fret buzz, of which is hard to get rid of with truss and saddle adjustments, but that can be said of a heavy hand on most guitars in general. The neck dive is severe like all the weight is really just the neck, but I don't notice it much when playing. It's just something to keep in mind if you play standing and lift both hands off the guitar to quickly adjust a mic or amp knob settings. The finish is kind of satin, as if it were printed on with an ink jet printer. It leaves the soft wood body pretty vulnerable to slow moving collisions against sharp corners. The Pre-Black Friday sale price on this guitar is a STEAL though! Definitely worth it for a Music Man bass sound for recording, or gigging if your willing to put up with the minor issues of weight and neck dive.Zach

I have been a bass player for 30 years. I was happy that my 13 year old daughter wanted to take up the instrument. She learned Ukelele well enough that I was willing to listen but no way was she using my basses because I see how she takes care of her room. Her arms were too small anyway so I researched this Ibanez mikrobass. What a delight! The walnut finish is fantastic and the tone when unplugged is tremendous. Plugged in, it was a little clackety-clack and the tone knob is almost literally nothing so I put daddario XL Flatwounds 50-100 (a recent discovery from which I will never return) and took care of that problem. The tuners seem a little slack when Im tuning it up. If I were to make a change, it would be the tuners. But theyre fine enough. It is exactly the size of my six string guitars so I was able to devote a quality gig bag that I dont use much for the cause. My daughter is encouraged by it although she hasnt quite dug in yet. However if she decides not to play after all, this will remain in my collection. Its just SO FUNboredofthisalready
I play in my home studio and record my bass along with mp3's of my favoritie songs, I make videos for self critique and to share with other bass players in my FaceBook bassists group. I recently sold my Ibanez SR755 5 string because I was not thrilled with the B string sound. Now I find the B sounds better to my ear with this bass that costs one third of the SR755…Amazing. I prefer passive electronics and the GSR205SM with it's Phat EQ give me the best of both worlds or active or passive. With the EQ turned counter clockwise the bass sounds like a passive and as you turn up the EQ the bass responds well and gives me an edge on the sound. Best of all there is no Floppy B string farty tone. the B sounds more musical. I want to address the weight of this bass. It is light as a feather especially after playing my Warwick. I can play for extended periods of time without having back pain issues. As to the statement of other reviewers about this being a great beginner's bass, let me add that in the hands of a seasoned player it sounds and feels as good as you'd want it to sound as well. This bass sounds totally different than my Fenders and Warwick and I find that to be advantageous.Preston
Overall: I bought this without playing it, but was very pleased right out of the box. My fingers were black after a few minutes of playing due to the dirty strings, but that didn't dampen my opinion by any means (but good idea to purchase a new set of strings along with the bass). Bought the Walnut Finish (looks more expensive) for use with my SC-300 Boss Looper (also purchased from zZounds). It sounds great! I'm not onstage playing head banger metal, so don't need that rumbling low end anyway. But the pickup configuration def gives you a lot of low end. Even though I've been playing guitar and bass for over 30 years, I would use this bass onstage, AND more importantly, if you are introducing anyone to playing bass – this will be a much easier learning bass due to the size. It still feels like a 'bass' and it's not tiny or anything, but it doesn't feel clunky like a bigger bass does. I'm looking forward to using this for a long while, and assuming it holds up over the next few months I'll likely grab another one just to have a backup. Don't hesitate if you need for a recording bass, or onstage. And def great for a beginner to keep them from losing interest due to most basses being too large for them.Jason

I have gone from an Ibanez BTB 5 string, to a Fender American Dimension Bass V, to a Fender American Standard P Bass V, to a Fender American Pro Jazz Bass V, to this beautiful bass. I'm not a huge fan of 5 string bass, but it's required for my band, so I've been buying and selling trying to find "THE ONE". Now, I've played many many 5 strings but there's always something, maybe 1 thing I hate about them all… clunky, way too heavy, neck finish is too thick, hard to reach the upper register, etc…. THIS BASS HAS NONE OF THOSE PROBLEMS Contoured edges, fully contoured heel for easy access to the upper register of notes and in fact has 22 frets instead of 21, the roasted maple neck is one of the best feeling necks I've ever played, and Erie Ball this year reduced the overall weight by completely redesigning the hardware in aluminum. Who does that?! I'll tell you: a company who listens to the players. On a strap, has no neck dive, overall balance is amazing. The only thing I'm getting used to from other basses is the Active Pickup (it's been about 6 years since I've used them). The only Con I can come up with is the G string is very close to the edge of the neck, making pull-offs fall over the side. Something I'll have to adjust as far as my playing technique goes, but worth it for this bass. Overall: Amazing. If you were on the fence about buying one…. BUY IT.Taylor

Overall: I've been playing bass for 16 years and I've always played with p basses. Recently I've been getting into playing funk music and decided I would try a different bass. I didn't want to pay over two grand to get a Stingray, so I chose this one. Right out the box it is a beautiful bass, it seems to be very well made. For $500 I couldn't believe how good the quality the bass was. Having the active electronics is great along with the powerful pickup. Perfect for cutting through the mix. It has a nice growl and is suitable for playing just about every genre of music. Only thing I had to adjust was the action and intonation. No sharp frets. I regret not having gotten this bass sooner. I have no experience with the manufacturer support so disregard that rating. Anyway this is a well made bass at a great price. Highly recommended.Miguel
Before this bass I've owned four other Stingrays in my life, including a vintage '76, an original MIA SUB, a modern American 4 string, and a modern HH 5 string. I like this one as much or better than any of them. It gives me the tight, focused punch I loved so much about my vintage Ray, and in fact plays BETTER than either of my Americans. I love the Jazz width neck. The lack of a belly cut doesn't bother me (even with my paunch!). One niggle – the nut extends about a 1/16" out from either side of its slot, and the frets could have used just a tad more filing, but these are not surprising on a bass at this price point. I got this bass a few months ago, and wasn't expecting to buy a bass that day, but since then it's always come out to either jam sessions, or shows with my band. I practice on it every day as well. The neck is really smooth and has an extremely playable feel, it fits perfectly to my hand. These basses come with a bridge that has decent mass to it, so the sustain and resonance is there in in the hardware. The tuning pegs hold tune really well, and the only modification I've done is add a hipshot drop tuner and dunlop strap locks, otherwise, this bass sounds amazing right out of the box. Highly recommend trying one out, it'll probably end up in your collection like mine did!BCass

I've been performing and recording electric bass for 50 years and this bass is my 1st 5 string bass. But it is my 2nd MM stingray, my other being a 4 string from the 80's that sounds great, plays great, but is very heavy. Up until recently I've avoided extended range basses as a traditional style "fender 4 bassist" but I've also acknowledged the advantage to having a low B string when working w/ keyboardists so I finally took the plunge, and am I glad I did. It's taken me the better part of a month of not playing anything else to begin to get used to this new string configuration but it's happening and I'm enjoying the process. So, about the bass; I pulled the trigger when I saw the advertised weight of 8.2 pounds, for a 5 string?!?!?! When I weighed it at home on my hanging digital scale it was 8.16. WOW. The new stingray special really is something special, 1) it's light 2) it's incredibly stable, I tune it about 1x a week and I practice every day, 3) the NECK! the new gunstock oil/wax finish is the best feeling neck I've ever played, the radius is perfect for it, and the maple board is nothing less than a racetrack. I've got one other bass who's neck I appreciate this much , a 1965 pre-cbs L series precision. 5) all of the aluminum hardware works perfectly and is gorgeous 6) it arrived w/ perfect fretwork and a perfectly cut nut. I ply w/ low action and this bass holds it; very minimal relief and 5/64" clearance at 17th fret on the B string. This stingray special is tight!
I recently purchased this bass (smoked chrome single H) and I couldn't be happier. The bass looks better in person than online! Besides the looks, the bass weight is balanced (no neck dive) and light. This is my third Musicman purchase and I will say the setup wasn't great with any of them. I don't mind that since I will change out the strings and adjust them to my own liking anyways. I added EB cobalt flats to mine and love the tone I'm getting from it. Be warned! This bass punches through the mix! I played it recently at my church and I was asked to dial back the volume because it was to much for the mix. I don't mind that because it's better than not having enough power and it was a simple fix! The neck feels amazing, better than the satin finish on my fender P and J basses. I had a choice between this bass and a Fender Elite precision and the difference was in the feel and weight. They both sounded great but the low weight and feel of the neck did it for me. You won't get that from a picture/description online! If you're on the fence about getting one try it out at your local GC like I did. I have no regrets with this bass, it's craftsmanship at its finest.Adam
I have always avoided a Music Man because of the price tag. I decided to trade in two of my top line Schecter basses for this and I DON'T regret my decision. This Stingray has perfect balance, perfect tone, and perfect set up right out of the box. My bandmates love the deep growl of the low end and the clear highs on the upper end. The HH set up allows me to get all the various tones I need for my Alternative music band. I get the punch I need for my RHCP, Green Day, Blink 182 songs along with my deep tones needed for my Foo Fighters, Weezer, Muse, Killers, Toadies and all my other songs. My Schecter basses were great but were not this versatile. I will never go back to middle of the road basses now that I have been stung by the Stingray!Bean

The materials are good. Fit and finish are good. Sound is good – I can get the P bass sound I was after in a 5 string. The fretwork is ok – for the price. Probably could use a good polishing. No hig frets or fret ends sticking out. The action on mine was high and the intonation was off. I lowered the strings a bit and adjusted the intonation. If you can't do this yourself, you will most likely need to have the tech at the store do it. Most Maple neck guitars in this price range shrink a tiny bit in their first Minnesota winter from the dry air. This causes the "fret bloom". I most likely will heed to file and reshape the fret ends when this happens. For the price, it seems to be a solid value.Merle
I was very surprised when I received this instrument. It was packed well and thought I was receiving the same quality instrument that I have received from musicians friend in the past. This right out of the box was not set up properly and would not play since the pickups were not soldered properly or at all. Had to do a full set up on the instrument and solder the pickups to get it to play. Now it sounds like the other instruments I have always received from Musicians Friend. I know this is not an expensive unit but the quality from ibanez was terrible. I am really disappointed to say the least. I should have sent it back, but thought I could fix myself and no what I had ,rather than have another sent to me in the same way the 1st one was sent. Very disappointed!!!!starfire 64
Overall this is a very nice bass for the money. Mine was made in Indonesia. Quality and finish were very good. Setup was fine right out of the box. Hardware and electronics seem to be of good quality. You can get a lot of tonal variation as well. One minor complaint is the body is lightweight and the neck is heavy so be sure and buy a comfortable strap that won't slip.Steve

I loved the look of an open pore body and I had researched Michael Kelly basses and took a chance. This is a good bass and when in active mode it has a lot of volume. This is the ONLY bass out of 20 in my collection that came without a nine volt battery and out of the box did not work as a result. The tone is extremely flat and the active EQ does not really add or take away hi or low end in a noticeable fashion. There is no pick guard and the hardware is a little on the "cheap" looking side. Two of the four knobs were not turning correctly and had to be taken off and re-set . I have since bought the Michael Kelly Element 4 vintage bass and it is night and day better than the open pore. This is a "good" bass and looks nice in my collection. I have basses that cost less and sound better.
Wasn't even planning on getting this bass but went to the store and the Sterlings and Squires couldn't even come close. Really surprising find and happy I got it! It really made the squire and sterling feel like toys. There are a few blemishes but the construction is spot on and has a really tight neck pocket. Only downside I'd say is that the finish is kinda cheesy up close (I don't think it's wood grain looks way more like a dip to me) and the head stock decal could use a redesign but besides that it's great!A Badger

My first introduction to these guys was their sophomore album Lonerism with the track "Gotta Be Above It." My initial reaction was that "Oh cool, they're sampling John Lennon stuff I never heard. No, this is what songwriter and Tame Impala's heavly lifting front man Kevin Parker sings exactly like. So much so that my first listens of these 2 albums were hampered because of it's distraction. After the second time around you just learn to love the Lennon-esque feel. From start to finish this album is great. They though out basic verse, chorus, verse, bridge, chorus structure of most songs and present a beautiful soundscape with catchy lyrics bass lines and riffs. Kenvin did very will to layer many sounds of this album, sweeping phasers, dreamy synths, and echos background vocals gives this album an amazing 60's psychedelic feel beyond anything we've ever got from the 60's. To say this band has a lot of respect for sound and did well to show it would be a vast understatement. Though there were a couple of down spots like Jeremy's Storm I thought could be elaborated more, it still ended up as a nice piece overall and more than made up for by tracks like Lucidity, It's Not Meant To Be, and Make Up Your Mind. Overall this is one of my new favorite albums of all time. I simply have a hard time putting this band down.
Absolutely LOVE this band. They are like Syd Barrett and Jimi Hendrix got together with the Beatles and Steppenwolf : ) Funky Space Rock sound… Reminescent of the early Pink Floyd. This is a good bass that I picked up as a beater and will probably use more than just for that. For active electronics and the cost, I figured it would be worth any set up that other reviews complained about. Mine didn't require any setup at all. However, there was a really noticeable chip off the paint on the headstock, and I bought new, not scratch and dent. It took two weeks to ship and I didn't want to go through a return process and get a less playable return, so I called Musician's Friend and asked for a rebate. They only gave ten, but I got it on sale and took the deal. As for the play-ability of this bass, it rocks right up there with a lot of basses three times the cost. I bought this for my son for his birth day a year and a half ago. I myself have played bass for over 30 years. I have had this thing professionally set up twice. Fretts needed dressed, action was way too high right out of the box. Electronics are fairly decent and playability is good after a set up. He is happy but already seeking a better bass.Scott
i bought it used, so that may affect my review but the bass was fairly easy to play, but the tuning was an issue. it would stay in tune but the pegs were kinda loose. i should note that this bass has ACTIVE PICKUPS. Meaning it takes a 9v battery to power. Not a big deal but you can't really play the bass without a battery. And if you forget to turn the volume knob all the way down, the battery will drain overnight and be complete dead before you pick the bass back up again. Would i recommend this to someone? yes but if they are beginning to learn how to play the instrument.zach m

This cd is in my opinion is Tame Impala best album they've come out with. Iv listen to them since the start and this is probably the best sounding, quality wise. Such a well put together album. I never really get tired of listening to it. The songs from start to finish will keep you listening to it. The music almost has a dreamy feel to it. Like something you may here in a Sundance film movie. It something of a old 60's – 70's sound but more of a Tame Impala feel then a Beatles feel/sound. If you love music and need something new/different/great this would be the album to pick up. I hope that you can enjoy it as much as I have and still do.atlaszagar89

Almost 40 years of playing experience and this bass is by far the best value that I've experienced. I've had my share of Precisions, Jazz basses, etc. over the years up to the $1500 range. When the pandemic kicked in I had sold most of my equipment but decided I had to have one bass. The neck is solid and similar to a P-bass thickness which I prefer and I don't need a 24-fret, 2 octave one anymore based on playing blues, jam, reggae, and rock. The tonal landscape is phenomenal rolling off the treble or bass dependent upon what I'm playing. Bright highs and deep lows are easily accomplished. I'm a long time guitarist with some really fine instruments who decided to pick up a "value" bass just to learn for fun. Knowing what to look for in guitars, I translated that over to basses and went to GC to try some out, see what appealed to me, and how far I could stretch the dollars I was willing to spend on an instrument to start out and, maybe, stick with. I found this Sterling by Music Man Ray4 in mint green that filled the bill on all fronts. As usual, the guys at GC let me try several instruments and test to my hearts content. I do all my own guitar set-ups and would never buy a guitar sight unseen, being worried about how much adjustment might be needed. The Ray4 wasn't too bad out of the box (quite literally because I didn't like the display instrument and they had another in stock for me to try). Once home, I did adjust neck relief, string height, intonation, and pickup to a point that I liked best. The pickup required the most adjustment actually because it had gotten stuck in an odd and very high position, perhaps from being jostled in shipping. There is some fret sprout on the higher frets, but nothing that would bother my hand. Bottom line: Everything could easily be adjusted to where I really like it and has been stable now over several days. It's comfortable to play and is, in my opinion, a real "looker." The satin finished neck is great and, although I usually don't go for maple fret boards, I do like this one. I'm very pleased with my purchase decision and would buy it again. Over the past years I have mostly had Senheiser headphones, then AKG then to KRK 8400s on the last pair. As the headphone served me for quite a few years before going defective I decided to try the Yamaha's Glad i did, it's just made me realise I have been missing a true monitor headphone like these. The flat true response they give and enabling you to hear all the details in your song is just amazing. Based on how good these are I will buying some Yamaha Monitors as well.
Overall: The older you get and the longer you play you come to realize that it's your skills and not that of gear that really matters,i.e Hendrix would have been Hendrix on a Wal-Mart Starcaster, is it nice to have a higher quality instrument? Of course is it necessary? No.This guitar will "get the job done", especially in a recording situation. This guitar is a "bare bones" no frills instrument for working players,once you "make it" go out and buy a 4k Martin or Gibson until then keep it real and work on your technique. I'm not really sure what players get in terms of value when they spend thousands on an instrument a 3k guitar does not sound 15x better than a $250.00 guitar. Some adjustment would be advised on this Yamaha, file down the nut or replace all together, the tuners could be better and the strings meh but this is a fine, professional quality instrument and I highly recommend it.Mike

I've been playing for over 30 years. I mainly play a fretless bass but I like to play a fretted bass at times. My old fretted bass is worn out and spending 2k on an instrument that isn't my main go to bass is not something I'm going to do. This Yamaha is a great bass. The finish is perfect. Even in the hole to adjust the truss rod. I got the translucent black and It's a very black matte look. The frets are not super polished but are not sharp or sloppy. They play really nice, stand tall, and are capable of a wide variety of tones with different playing stlyes. The 5 piece neck is really playable. I'm really digging it. Mine is perfectly adjusted right out of the box. Tuning pegs have a really cool gunmetal finish and are adjustable if the ever get sloppy. Bridge is the same gunmetal finish and isn't high mass but it's not flimsy like the stock fender and it is the standard 5 screw type if I ever decided to change it. I don't think I'll do it anytime soon. The sustain resonates so well. Maybe better than my pricey fretless. I'm really into the mahogany body. Mine came with the intonation setup perfectly. It shipped detuned as it should've. All I did was stretch the string and tune it. Man do these electronics shine. I've got to spend some more time really learning the controls but I was able to dial in a few tones I wanted to try immediately. My first impression of the strings is that they really suck. Maybe that's true but they do play well and they're not dead but I bought a set of my favorite strings that I'll get on when I get sick of these. Overall I got a lot more bass than I expected for the money. A beginner could really grow into this and more advanced players should be quite satisfied.ZioEnzo
The Yamaha TRBX305 Bass Guitar itself: There is nothing to fault this guitar – particularly at this price point. It is beautifully finished and constructed and infinitley playable with no set up needed – right out of the box. Whilst it lacks a dedicated 'mid' tone control there is plenty of tonal variation available to suit all styles, especially given the novel five way eq toggle switch. Personally I bought this for recording purposes and prefer to leave things pretty flat and post eq in the mix. I dont think I would have any difficulty getting this to cut in a live situation on the fly though. If you are in any way doubtful of this instrument in terms of tone, purpose or playability – don't be. I reckon its a good work horse that will satisfy most general bass purposes. If you are a beginner looking for an instrument that is affordable and not going to hold you back as you grow into it – look no further. This is a really really good guitar. If you are a pro – just looking for a five string for a change, you won't be disappointed. AND – look how much it costs!? Really, its a no brainer. First, I saw it in a shop just out of the corner of my eye and it grabbed my attention. So, I am usually not a fan of Yamaha, holding this bass in my hands convinced me in seconds I found it easy to play because of the neck form, which is curved asymmetrical, giving a good grip for my thumb. The when the seller passed me the cable to a very cheap amp, I was immediately sure that this is an exceptional bass guitar for a good price. As I am also not a fan of active electronic, the possibility to switch between active and passive is well done, and when during a concert your battery gives up, there is no big problem to switch to passive and change the battery before the next song. I love to take this bass when I do not know what the meeting with other musicians is about, and even with electronic music it can cope. The bass is very light and easy to carry, it is easy to play and playing with the active electronic gives you a huge variety of modern sounds, that is really nice to experiment with. Surprisingly for me Yamaha did a lot of innovative things with this bass guitar and a lot of things right. Meanwhile I am used to the thin grey matt painting and somehow, I started liking it.
