Making its debut in 1973 the roland re-201 space echo was the space echo. taken to heart by the likes of pink floyd and david bowie, along with many reggae and dub outfits the tape delay unit gave the artist's sound extra expression with plenty of chaos to boot. now seen in the hands of radiohead, portishead and even brian setzer its time for an update to this classic. roland and boss have therefore created the boss re-20 space echo delay, which itself has already been taken on by ivor novello award-winners, massive attack. recreating a classic every care has been taken to keep the unit as close to the original as possible with every sonic detail and nuance accounted for. the boss re-20 space echo delay guitar effects pedal gives you the same atmospheric, space-filling, analog tone echo of the original. although it utilises modern technology the boss re-20 also gives an accurate recreation of the re-201's tape flutter and magnetic head sound saturation, for that retro feel. the mode selector knob is still intact with its 12 placements. building on a legend with the all the period details intact boss have also taken their design that little bit further with the boss re 20 space echo delay pedal. with its twin pedal design you gain extra control of the units abilities with the expression pedal giving you hands-free control of parameters such as repeat rate & intensity. a tap input pedal gives you the ability to set the delay time by foot. the boss re20 space echo delay can also have the delay set to a longer duration than the re201 was capable of.

Most problems that people report on this are due to insufficient power supply. It draws 175ma so many daisy chain and power blocks many not be enough. Voodoo Labs Pedal Power have designated outputs (5 and 6 on Pedal Power 2 Plus) to supply 250ma for larger pedals which works perfect. Giving it too little power will result in swooshy clock noise, clipping at low levels and overall poor sound. When given enough juice, its dead silent and has no noticeable tone suck (that I can hear through reference headphones straight into clean amp). Sharing because I wish I'd figured this out earlier myself!TBIRD
Sound: Being my first delay pedal I can't compare it to others however it doesn't suck any of my tone. It doesn't even sound digital, cold, or sterile to me. Doesn't color my amps tone either. Make sure you use this in the effects loop however it does sound okay through the front end up my gain channel. Features: From what I can tell this has all the features of the original RE201 but in a compact stompbox. Ease of Use: This is the first pedal I've bought that the manufacturer actually provided sample settings in the manual.On the underside of the pedal has a diagram of how the different modes include which tape head sound. I found my favorite delay sound in a few minutes and now I feel like David Gilmour with this thing on. Quality: It's a Boss pedal. I'll never have reliability issues. Feels nice and heavy too. Value: This pedal is just like it's analog predecessor and those units are very costly on the used market. My friends RE501 tape echo/chorus unit is worth a pretty penny but my pedal does something his unit can't do and that is my pedal actually works. Boss could charge up to twice the price and still sell these. Manufacturer Support: Being a Boss pedal I'm sure the manufacturer support is great too. The Wow Factor: It does have a cool name "space echo". Sounds like something a martian left behind on our planet. It even smiles and winks at you. In fact maybe it's a space robot from another galaxy! Overall: I finally broke down and decided to buy a delay pedal. At first I just wanted an MXR Carbon Copy but after selling my second amp and having extra money I decided without hesitation to buy the RE20. I'm not going to say this is the best delay pedal on the market but it does an excellent tape delay sound for what it's worth. I really like the layout and the ability to mix tape heads and reverb. It doesn't take long at all to find a good setting either. I can't wait to use this with two amps either. I'll probably pick up the MXR someday but I won't need to.Joshua
I purchased this pedal in 2018 after selling my Dunlop Echoplex, seeking a more multi-faceted delay. I saw Jonny Greenwood use the original tape version of this pedal, so I just had to bite. 3 years later, my life has dramatically changed, but my Boss RE-20 Space Echo remains at my side for any practice, rehearsal, gig and family dinner. Everything from the multiple tape head simulations to the tap tempo to the fabled Twist setting has helped me enjoy the great gift of the electric guitar. This pedal has become a mainstay on my board for any sort of delay that I need, from quick slapbacks to endlessly cascading streams and anything in between, all with that good old vintage flavor. One thing I especially love doing is cranking the Intensity until full oscillation and using the Tap Tempo to crank out a sidechain-style rhythm that wows the audience and pisses off the soundguy when I play it through a 100w Marshall stack. If I could offer the smallest complaint about anything related to this pedal, it would be that the Reverb can be quite muddy at times, especially if most of the gain comes later in the signal path. This can be easily avoided by either using the Effects Loop, or by not using the Reverb at all. Oh well. Overall, I couldn't recommend this pedal more. It's easy to use, has Stereo In/Out, Direct On/Off, an input level, a built in Reverb, Boss's tried and true durability, and — my favorite aspect — a nice little smiley face! Great sounding fuzz and modulation pedal. get pink floyd style tones. flanger, u-vibe, phaser and rotary mod modes. 3 fuzz settings. made in the usa. the dark side is a really good pedal for a minimal setup because you can get so many different tones with it. for the fuzz you can even verge on a mild boost to give you lead an extra push, but crank it up and you've got more aggressive fuzz tone. modulation gives you great sounding flanger, u-vibe, phaser and rotary. you can either fuzz or modulation individually, or together. there is also expression pedal compatibility which dictates modulation repeats. there's also a delay setting which then uses the secondary mode you can see on some knobs.

About The Keeley Darkside Pedal: This is a pedal that many people will buy, set the settings to the Pink Floyd sounds, have fun with it then probably sell it. The people that don't resell this pedal will be the ones that think outside of the Triangle and experiment with it. Use the External food pedal and really get the full use from the Tape Delay, Phaser and Rotary. The ability to blend the Flange and Phaser and the Rotary and Univibe are a few things that make this pedal really special and unique. Then add in the vintage Fuzz which you can adjust the Fuzz Filter. You can set the fuzz to Flat, Full or Scoop. You can also adjust the level of the fuzz and put the fuzz before or after the Flange/Rotary/Phaser/Delay. The Tape Delay is incredible and really easy to dial in and start playing something inspiring very quickly. This pedal is much like the band Pink Floyd where they are both extremely experimental and have no limits on what you can create. I love to use the Tape Delay with the Expression Pedal because I can push the pedal forward and get the repeats to go endless then lift up my foot to let that fade as I add textures on top of that. I highly recommend this pedal and I highly recommend experimenting with it. Think outside the Triangle and you will have endless inspiration and fun. I love this thing! Fantastic audio quality. I think the fuzz sounds really great. Easily among the finest Big Fuzz clones on the market and I like the fact that you got the 3-way mid range switch, allowing for a wide range of different tones from the era. And the filter really lets you hone in the tones. My main issue with the Dark Side is the fact that you can't have a modulation effect and the delay selected at the same time. They share the same circuit and can't be used simultaneously. Delay is a critical part of David's sound. Overall, it sounds great and I have had no problem using it as a part of my rig. This being the 2nd iteration of the pedal, I do wish Mr. Keeley would've left the insert capability. I prefer to have my overdrive after my Fuzz, and before any modulation.MetalChief

This pedal is incredible!! Definitely exceeds my expectations. I have had this pedal almost a month and am still having fun discovering all the different ways it can manipulate the guitar signal! Very compact, in fact, that may be its only downfall. It comes with a power supply so you never have to worry about batteries (unless you want to)! I've been searching for the right reverb pedal for months now. I was using an audio interface and Ableton and a MIDI pedalboard to control reverb before and I wanted something more compact that wouldn't require me to pull out my laptop every time I want to play. After all this time I came to the determination that I needed a Strymon Big Sky, however the close to $500 price tag kept me looking at other pedals for the time being until I could save up for this. In steps this amazing pedal. I've been a fan of Electro-Harmonix for a while now, having their Canyon, Freeze, and Superego pedal, I have found them to be superb in every way. I had tried the slightly lower cost Holy Grail a while ago, and even though it sounded great, the lack of choice made it a little lackluster. I was pretty certain I should go with the Hall of Fame by TC Electronic, and was actually in the store to purchase that, when I saw the Oceans 11, and thought "I need to try that." The design of it was gorgeous. Strong metal build, with an amazing ocean-esqe image on it. I pull it out, plug it into the test rig they have set up, and immediately was blown away. The sound is as close to a Big Sky as I have seen from any other pedal. With 11 different styles of reverb, including a mix of delay and reverb in some cases, this pedal is just as versatile in my opinion. The reverse reverb is stellar, while the shimmer and poly effect give this big beautiful heavenly sound. On top of having your standard Hall/Plate/Spring settings. This thing really crosses from basic reverb to a shoegaze dream. This is THE BEST reverb pedal at this price point. Overall: As a disclaimer, I only use this pedal in Hall mode, slightly dialed in, as an 'always on' effect at the end of my fx chain..but.. it's freakin' awesome. Very natural sounding, doesn't have that digital harshness you get with most verb pedals. 75% of the modes are beautiful and have practical applications, while the rest are at least fun to mess around with. My needs haven't required me to explore all of the additional features of this pedal, like accessing hidden parameters or the octave selector, but I love the 'hold down' infinite sustain feature. The foot-switch is floating, as in it doesn't click on and off, and by pressing and holding it you can create some pretty spacey textures. Overall very impressive.

I've owned 8 reverb units over the last 30 years. This is a nice one. I just set it on the spring setting at about 8 o'clock and leave it there. Too much reverb sounds like a joke anyway, I grew up w/ spring reverb sounds from Fender amps like Princeton Reverb, Deluxe Reverb, Super and Twin reverb. etc. This won't sound exactly like that, but for the price it gets pretty close. It will work fine for recording/ performing w/o issues. I did notice it sounds different when using a single coil guitar vs. a Humbucker, that's a standard issue. True bypass is great. You can buy with confidence ,but you need to understand it's not like spending major money on a high end unit. I can say , no one will ever say, "hey that's a bad reverb" who will ever notice that…. maybe some super sound studio recording guy with 40 years of studio time ? who cares, plug it in a dial in a setting you like and play and enjoy.VJ
Excellent budget effects pedal – Great value – Has 3 basic settings Spring/Plate and Hall – Reverb sweep is very limited range, but mix control is almost unlimited (you can adjust to make it sound like your playing in the next house!) – I generally only use reverb to add snap to a dry signal amp, so was not expecting true ambience at this price range. *Pros – Robust build, large sweep controls, very quiet and clean, True bypass, optional 9V battery (you don't see many of those today do you?) Got it today after watchng a gazzilion Youtube videos. Closest thing to a tape delay I've heard. I played it about 5 minutes and knew I'd found what I was looking for for a long time. Don't put it in the effects loop. The pedal is designed to go into the amp. And it comes with the power supply. So stop reading these reviews and just buy it. Dunlop/MXR pedals are the greatest. I was always wondering about what sounds like a second strum on the a minor on aint talkin bout love and it turns out the echoplex is set at one repeat in anything off of Van Halen 1 that hes using the delay (not sure about other albums) but it definitely makes the song more enjoyable to play knowing it sounds just a tiny bit closer to the record. Awesome!!!!! But better together with the Exchoplex Preamp EP-101. Simple to use, good features, sounds great with my setup (listed below… for science). FYI, I also own a real and functional Echoplex, and a Catalinbread Belle Epoch, so I have some great reference points. Yes, there's some sonic differences between all the equipment I mentioned above, but remember! These pedals are trying to emulate the real deal… And it's never easy to replicate in digital format the nuances of vintage electric equipment. Even the Belle Epoch Deluxe (which I had and sold) didn't get there 100%. Why? The dude from Belle Epoch said on his youtube channel that the built-in preamp section is not the same as the one in the Echoplex. How does the Exchoplex Delay sound? Like I said, love it! It's what I have on my home (not gigging) VH-style pedalboard and it's very, very close to the early Van Halen sound (remember that his tone, while not solely dependent on the Exchoplex, it was greatly influenced by it). There are a lot of full-featured reverb pedals on the market today, most of them with some sort of shimmer/octave/pitch-shifting mode. A few things set this pedal apart from its counterparts. First off is just the amount of control you get over the processed signal. Being able to mix the signal heading into the reverb circuit, the reverb unit itself, and then the final blend, lets you get sounds that are just not possible on 4-knob units. Everything from subtle to watery to full-on church-organ psychedelia. Next, you get three memory banks to save your creations. You could use Red for no-frills reverb, blue for slight modulation, and red for the crazy stuff. Or just save different flavors of crazy stuff in all three, it's up to you. Lastly, you've also got the option of running it in stereo if you'd like (which really amplifies the effect), plugging in an expression pedal for realtime control of the reverb, and also plugging in a two-button controller to make the buttons more accessible if the Descent finds a home at the back of your pedalboard. A guitarist's swiss army knife! Easy to program! No confusing menu navigation. Sounds pretty good running direct to PA, despite not having a preamp. People need to understand that this is not a digital modeling unit, but a true effects unit that's best used with a good amp that has an effects loop. Four-cable connection gives you best results. This is my first multi fx unit, and it will be my only for a long time. I was skeptical on the price point at first but I needed something that was MIDI capable. This pedal not only has MIDI, but an effects loop, and direct PA input. Not only does it have a tuner built in as well but the pedals built in effects are limitless and sound freakin great in my opinion. If you're thinking about going for it, just do it.Steve B
I'm 63, I've made a all or part of my living playing for most of that, and I'm sick of wires and patch cords and velcro, and I'm not a programmer. This is what I've always wanted, and very high quality. Well made, well thought out. Reverb is excellent and controllable separately. Cool patching options. Unit is heavy duty and very quiet. Let's start with this, gobs and gobs of gain and mids are at you neck and call with this pedal. It goes way past what you can get with a Plexi, probably up to a JCM 900SL-X level of gain, but not that modern, super saturated metal you hear today. It has lots of mids, thanks to the "mid" control, more than you need, and all the controls have quite a lot of range to them, so dialing up a Marshall sound you like should be easy. The knobs/pots feel really, really cheap, so I could see a missed stomp breaking off a knob or two – not great! But, it is an MXR/DOD size pedal, so you'd really have to have some big feet to miss the button that way. That said, it's not going to break the day after you get it. It can also run off a 9v battery with a door on the bottom to access it, so no screwdriver needed. I like it.Scott

This little green gem has been a great addition to my pedalboard, filling in for potential gaps for various modulation pedals I dont have or occasionally swap out. The Series/Parallel button is a great option: Series using pure effected signal, while Parallel blending dry signal to the effected signal, too. This is especially useful for the vibrato effect; Set it to its slowest speed and minimal sweep and it creates and clean doubler. This also makes the phaser sound less intense. The chorus and flangers are really useful. The rotary effect isnt particularly accurate, but it does make for a good alternative flanger or vibrato effect. Ive always wanted to experiment with Ring Modulation, and this has a lot of control with parameters especially interesting when combined with OD sounds. The Tremolo effect is Mooers simple sine wave option from their Triangolo Trem pedal. Stutter is a square wave tremolo option. The AutoWah effect is a modulated Wah filter. Setting it slow provides a unique sweep character, made more subtle by running it in Parallel. Low Bit tweaked correctly will create a low-fi synth character similar to an old video game. Liquid set to medium-slow sounds similar to an old synth effect that randomly steps through filters (kind of like ELPs Karn Evil9, 1st Impression). The pedal cleverly incorporates two features in the foot switch: it acts as a tap temp, AND when holding it down, it gradually accelerates any selected effects modulation rate, while releasing it gradually returns it to its original modulation tempo (using Tremolo, its like Radioheads Bones when they manually turned the rate knob). Are these the best examples of these effects? No. Are the knobs tiny? Yes. Is it hard to read the yellow lettering? Yes, but I have the options memorized. Most importantly, when I have no room on my board for these effects, its nice to be able to still have access to something thatll work and also have fun with.alonzomachine

I'm starting to play a few venues where the house equipment is fairly decent, but I miss the tremolo that my Vox AC30 has. I don't use it a lot, but it does add that special something when I do. I'm a pretty harsh judge of what comes out of my amp (Love the AC30 tube amp, hate the Valvetronic digital versions). I'm not a modeling kind of guy, and will take tone over features any day. After much research, I decided to give the Voo Doo Labs a try because I didn't want to spend more, and since this would live in my pedal board and only be used occasionally, I wasn't too concerned about the plastic nuts by the input jacks (if you don't use a pedal board, you should be!).As soon as I turned the effect on, significant tone suck ensued. The tremolo circuitry works fine and the controls have a great deal of throw so you should be able to get the settings you want, however as soon as you engage the tremolo, the overall sound got significantly bassier. It was almost like I rolled half my tone off my guitar. It was that noticeable, and back it goes. Don't go by the reviews, listen to what a real tremolo sounds like before making your choice.Anonymous

Surprisingly versitile, and great for anyone looking for a classic tremolo sound. It's more compact than I expected, and fits well on my pedal board. The controls are easy to adjust, and the volume nob is an added bonus. If you're looking for an affordable tremolo that can give you that Creedence Clearwater "Swamp" sound, or classic Tommy James and The Shondells "Crimson and Clover" ring, (which is what I wanted) I think you'll be very happy with this pedal. Sound: OK, so the pre-set programs are hit and miss for me. But that had to be expected, as I am not plugging a guitar into it, but rather a Korg RK100-S2 keytar. For obvious reasons, the cleaner patches, and patches designed around arpeggios sound decent, while the shredding metal patches sound like ass. I'm sure they would both sound good if I was hooked up with an actual 6 string. Features: The most useful feature as far as I'm concerned, are all of those knobs all over the front of the unit. They make it so easy to dial in the sound. Especially when compared to the all digital products like the GT-1. I had a GT-1B last year, and it was aggravating to modify sounds on the fly. The other most useful feature is the Tone Central app. OMG!!! Last month, I trashed Korg's design decision in their app for modifying the keytar's sounds. The window can't be resized, the lines of text are nearly microscopic, it isn't REMOTELY intuitive to figure out how to re-write the patches. Boss' Tone Central app is the EXACT OPPOSITE of all of that. Full screen, each effect section is on screen alone and has 3 different ways to modify the settings. Get things the way you want, name your patch, and click "write," then choose where you want it saved, and click "OK." It couldn't be simpler. Ease of Use: If the preset patches are hit and miss, the "manual mode" is why I bought this board. The keytar really needs some effects to come alive. This board is simply a placeholder until I can build a quality keytar/synth specific pedal board. Compression, delay, and/or phasers can add a lot of depth to my sound depending on what I'm currently using. Those dials make it super easy to get the sound right quickly. It does sort of suck that they are on the floor, but how could that have been avoided without bluetooth and a phone app? And, if that was the case, I wouldn't have bought it in the first place! Quality: I bought this "blemished." My guess, based on the condition of the box that the factory shipped to zZounds, is that this took a fall off of a shelf in the warehouse. One end of the box was mangled badly! Thanks to Boss' attention to detail in packaging, and legendary build quality, I got this product without a scuff, scratch, or dent for 20% off. I like that build quality. (Feel free to play football with some of those synth specific stomp boxes guys! *wink-wink*) Value: Before my fretting hand got too badly damaged to play bass anymore, I wanted the bass version of this product. I believe that it was discontinued, and I missed my chance. I got the GT-1B but didn't like working with it. When I saw that this was available, I didn't hesitate to put it into my cart. Only then, after the fact, did I realize that it was in "blemished" condition. I almost went back and put a new, full priced one in my cart simply because I didn't want the hassle of potentially returning a broken product. So, yes, I do believe this is worth the normal retail price. Manufacturer Support: In the 12 years I've been playing, I've owned several Boss products from tuners to metronomes to multi effects pedals and I have NEVER had to reach out for support. In my estimation, that's the BEST form of customer service! The Wow Factor: G.A.S.! I can't play guitar a lick. But I've bought guitars in the past simply to hang them on the wall. I can't say that I would ever buy THIS product if I didn't need it. But I'm sure that it will still find some place in my home studio, even after the actual pedal board is complete Overall: An easy recommendation for the guitarist on a budget. Depending on one's needs, stomp boxes and pedal boards can become quite pricey. Between this, the Tone Central app, and the hundreds of additional patches available there, if you can't get the sound you're looking for, the problem lies mostly with you.
I have been buying and selling multi effects for many years. I loved them all, even the silly ones such as the RP50, 505, ME30..too many. I guess my favorites were the Korg AX3000G(which I thought was ahead of its time) and the Digitech RP500(awesome reverbs, mods and filters),and even some Pods for their amp sims too. Yes yes.. they all had their short comings in different avenues.. Boss reliability is were a part of Ny early playing days since the 80s..and to this day, I use Boss single pedals almost exclusively as my main rig. I just love the simplicity of their individual pedals and this unit is the only one that comes close in terms of the logic of its settings. I love KNOBS, and the ME80 has plenty to go around with. SIMPLICITY is the key . No more scrolling up n down a screen on the floor which I can hardly see. Now is the ME80 the best sounding multi-effect out there? No sir! With all the current technologies which can produce units such as The Kemper, Fractals, Boss GT1000, and other high res IR capable units from Zoom and Line 6(including some very capable Chinese newcomers), the ME80 can be seen as kind of outdated to some, The ME80 is certainly not what the top guns use these days, especially when occupying an arena concert stages I'm sure(but I bet they still use one or two boss pedals in their rig lol)..Also, Let's not forget that the ME80 initial introduction day to the world was just about eight years ago.. shall we? But guess what, it's still alive and kicking! And that is exactly why you still see it here for sake in 2022 ar least until Boss comes out with some new monster that can handle the GT1000 chipsets and adding more KNOBS to its chassis. The ME80 is gorgeous, it sounds good, and it has a personality. It also has more to offer than its predecessors such as the ME50/70..I mean, the addition of a separate footswitch for reverb,EQ and a simple patch recall?? I would recommend this unit for any small club or a tight rehearsal space for a quick setup and a speedy wrap-up after a show, when it's finally time to go home, no patch cables required.I AM KEEPING THIS ONE FOR MYSELF! Till I get to warm up for Bruno Mars(not happening soon lol),My main Boss rig is staying home, and that goes to my crybaby and the Budda volume pedal with all them patch cables entourage.James
I don't want to program guitar effects. I don't want to read cheesy names for effects that I can't immediately recognize or understand. The young people like that stuff but I am old and old school. The ME-80 gives me my old stomp boxes but grouped on a modern platform. It is basically foot pedal controlled with a very nice expression pedal and 8 on-off pedals. The foot pedals work flawlessly. But the thing that makes this unit awesome is the knobs. You can turn a knob, set a value and get instant feedback on what you did and look at it anytime to see what it is set at. If you know stomp boxes then you know exactly how this thing works. It has by my estimation about $4K worth of stomp box effects and amp emulations. Whether you want an old Tube Screamer or a Big Muff Fuzz. This thing has it. And it has many new stomp box effects like the amazing Tera Echo, Harmonist, Freeze and a Looper. It has just about every effect you could want and you can play multiple effects at the same time. As far as I am concerned this is the greatest thing since sliced bread. And I am an original POD user. I still plug into the POD now and then. But the POD is history. The ME-80 is what I like today. I even commissioned a guy to build me an angled stand to boost up the knobs and pedal to make it easier for me to dial in changes. I had it painted orange to match my Orange Crush 35RT amp where I port the ME-80 output. Lastly, if you insist on being a programmer, they let you do that as well and offer a ton of presets online. You can hook up by USB to your computer and program away. Brilliant. The one down side… you have to buy an AC/DC adaptor for $30 or use up a lot of batteries. How odd. This review was flagged for writing Big Mu** using the two F's 🙂 For the money, this is a really hard pedal to beat. It goes from mild and laid-back to wild and intense. The controls feel great…like as in excellent quality. This is a reissue of the original Big Mu** PI. I tried a Big Mu** PI with Wicker and forget about it. It hissed so loud in Wicker mode that I couldn't even here myself think and it got even worse with the tone switch off. And even in the so-called Big Mu** PI mode, it didn't sound anywhere near as good as this Rams Head does. And, the Rams Head is quiet compared to the BM PI with Wicker. One more thing, The BM PI with Wicker does not say anywhere on it nor in the included paperwork where it's made, whereas the RH BM PI clearly says New York City on the face of it…Vincent
The tone sweep is nice and there are some interesting spots because it is linear while kind of non-linear at 10 to noon and about 1-2 on tone control. I can't say why but usually I had purchased like more expensive versions of ehx pedals. That being said, I think people need to realize that these are quite accurate reissues and circuits, and just because it is an affordable pedal doesn't mean it isn't great.
Overall: Floats like a stone and stings like a nest of angry hornets! This box has the buzzsaw sound down pat. The fuzz is a thick, smooth, and consistent. I like this kind of fuzz in particular because it’s less fuzzy and little more distortion-like. The Tone knob has a really wide sweep from boomy bass to mid-range Hades. It has plenty of gain on tap and even sounds pretty good with the guitar’s volume rolled back a skosh.I’ve never used the original Green Russian Muff and have only heard them compared through videos online, so I can’t speak as to how they’re different/alike. I got it because I didn’t want to haul my vintage Black Russian Muff around from gig to gig anymore because it’s getting valuable and since it was a pretty jenky design to begin with, it’s liable to break with heavy use. That being said, the reissue Green Russian Muff has a different sound than an original V8 Black Russian Muff. It doesn’t sound as good to me, but it’s not so different that I wouldn’t use the Green Russian live in lieu of the Black Russian for the aforementioned reasons. One huge plus for the Green Russian is its pedalboard friendly size. The Black Russian is the size of an 80s metal lunchbox and took up an awkward sized chunk of the pedalboard. Now there’s more room for other unnecessary boxes (gulp)! One noteworthy ding for this pedal is how difficult it is to see the script on the top of the pedal. The words are printed right underneath the knobs, so if it’s kinda dark (which it usually is) and the lights are all in front of you (which they usually are) the words are impossible to see. Overall it’s a nice fuzz especially for the price. It’s noisy, but once the music gets rolling you won’t even notice it.Brad

This MXR covers all of the tones I need. I am playing a passive bass through a PA. I mainly need some boost and some color. This works great. I rarely use the distortion. The pedal really add to the bottom end. I reduces that hollow tone you can get playing live in an acoustical challenging room.
Whenever I turn on this pedal, distortion or not it sounds like someone just woke up a beehive, The actual clean sound is pretty good but when you really dig into the pups it starts to make that pop sound louder which is a big issue for me at least, (shouldn't be due to volume increase) when the distortion is on, there's even more buzz AND it's a very bad distortion. The distortion also doesn't have a wide range of sounds and is only really usable at minimum gain and the blend knob almost all the way back, just get an OD , and an EQ pedal, trust me.Undisclosed
I typically run a clean bass signal with no effects (except for a compressor pedal). I purchased this pedal because of the DI, Equalizer control, Distortion (as needed) and 9v operation. (1) The DI sounds pretty good and records clean. (2) The Equalizer control is a little too sensitive for my taste, but it does shape the sound as expected. I feel that a +/- 12db 4-band Equalizer would have been better with frequency bands of 80Hz, 360Hz, 800Hz and 5kHz. (3) The Distortion is pretty good and fits the bill when needed. Like most distortion pedals, it is slightly thin when "on". But this pedal can balance a clean (low) and distorted tone for a good balance. (4) The pedal operates on the same 9v supply/polarity that virtually all other pedals operate on (center negative). I find this convenient when operating all pedals on my Big Joe Lithium Power Supply. In summary I'm happy with my purchase and it resides in my set-up all of the time.SLoveland

What you don't hear in the demo videos is NOISE, but life is full of compromise. Low budget? No place to open up 50 or 100 watts? It does have nice tone characteristics. I have 3 different to test drive. A Blackstar Stereo 20, Marshall MG10, Carvin SX50 – It definitely adds to the built in varity of the Blackstar; okay with the Carvin; sounds like crap with the Marshall. You can not "overdrive" the amps natural overdrive. You have to run it into a realitivly clean sound. The noise gate peters out the signal on sustained notes, which can be taxing. I have a Charvel So Cal, Fender Tele Player, and a Kramer Beretta: the effect of your guitar's sound is marginal. The difference is in your amp. The Bottom Line: I say, test a floor model, through different amps at the music store. If you like it, buy one USED from SamAshDirect… But if you want THAT EVH SOUND – buy an amp… And keep shredding!icor57-2
This overdrive pedal is used by many pros now in their pedal chain to layer gain stages and I fully understand why now. The noise gate is an excellent addition to my chain, smooth saturation and warm distortion to screaming high gains. Don't be afraid to turn the knobs really low, you will be much more impressed if you do and will likely have better results. Overall: Whether you're trying to dial in a wet surf rock reverb or an ambient shoegaze tone with lots of atmosphere, this pedal can do it all. This is hands down the best pedal I've ever purchased and far surpasses any other reverb pedal I've heard. I use a few different brands of pedals and Boss makes solid pedals. This rv6 pedal makes a great variety of reverbs that sound very good with cleans, on every setting. I play with a few different distortions. It is very difficult to dial in a good reverb sound with too much distortion. The level setting has to be low and the sensitivity of the effects are boosted and that makes it very hard to easily swap from clean to dirty without major changes. Dirty will require serious tweaking. I would give it a 3 star because it's not friendly to dirty, but I'll give it 4 stars just because the cleans really do sound great and the variety and quality of sounds are in a price range well below many other reverbs of this caliber. It's a BOSS, a tank. I did mess with the shimmer with crunch and low level and found some decent sounds.Ghostpuncher
I got this as a catch-all reverb to round out a basic pedal board I use for home practice and hobby recording. First off, all the "usual suspect" reverb tones sound really great in the effects loop of my Bogner Atma combo. I had read reviews of the RV6 where it had been criticized for sounding digital/grainy, but I preferred it over the Oceans and HOF2 I compared it to. I classify myself as a somewhat fussy "toan snob" who still prefers tubes and analog, so I wonder if maybe that "digital/grainy" complaint was with it going straight in, out in front of the preamp. I'll have to get around to trying it like an outboard spring verb sometime. I really dig the shimmer verb, especially with a flanged, overdriven lead tone. I need to get an expression pedal now and play around with oscillating that! Last thing I want to compliment is the helpful buffer the Boss adds at the tail end of my board. I pretty much have no loss now. Kudos to Boss for yet another solid product!Lee B.

Great Klon clone. Lots of clean op-amp gain and enough boost on the other dial to take any clean amp from grit to saturation. This won't djent but it will do everything inbetween. I've modded mine with the JHS mods. Very easy to do and germanium clipping sounds much nicer and more authentic Klon imho. Some people say this is a boost and not an overdrive, they are wrong. It does both. The op amps in these are the same as the original Klon and have a huge amount of gain on tap. I can heavily distort a 1977 Ultra Linear Twin Reverb (4x6l6 bottles) with this easily! The buffer works well too and has a switch inside the pedal to do true bypass as an alternative.wozzlepop
I normally use a Big Muff (fuzz) but find it either all or nothing. Was looking for something more controllable and after playing with a wide range in store decided on the Soul Food. Has everything from subtle to full on overdrive. I also like the tone control as I often pair it with a CryBaby which seems to boost treble a bit too much, nice to be able to hold that back…Totally love it!Reviewed by Andertons Music Co.
I use the Soul Food as a clean boost on the recommendation of a GC employee in Nashua NH. I mentioned that I wanted a clean boost to my signal so that I could overdrive my amp a little more without having to change the gain I had setup. The Soul Food was recommended over a TS9, a Boss Overdrive and a Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster. I am very happy with the Soul Food recommendation. The pedal is a great clean boost for my amp (Marshall TSL122). I put the pedal in the effect loop and set the pedal volume up to about 3:00 and the gain as zero, treble to taste (12:30). Then I dial in the effect loop percentage (its a parallel loop) and with the pedal engaged I get a nice, fat, sweet drive into the power amp section of the amp. This drives those big power tubes a little harder without having to turn up the volume. Thus, I get a heavier, fatter crunch compared to straight pre-amp distortion. This is the exact effect I was looking for. Now I have my pre-amp gain set pretty low and I typically drive most of my crunch from the power amp. Using the Soul Food in the effects loop in the manner in which I described, setup as such, I get what amounts to more 'power amp' crunch without having to dime the amp's volume. Of course with the pedal engaged the volume is louder but because the effects loop is being driven harder on the return, the signal going to the power amp is hotter, thus driving the power tubes harder, without having to open the amp volume any more than I have it set at. Even if this is not the preferred way to get more power amp distortion, using the Soul Food in this manner gives me the effect I want, and its sounds AWESOME, and that's really the bottom line. As a clean boost it works perfectly. I was not very impressed with the pedal's actual distortion, it sounded a little fuzzy to me. Maybe that what its supposed to sound like. Great little device. Different to a looper. Great for creating background washes of tonal color on-the-fly. If you got adept at it, you could use it to great effect in live performance. Personally, I use it to practice scales and arpeggios. Very effective and easy to use. I don't know how different or similar the electronics are, but it would be great to see this device combined with a looper. They're similar in concept. An extra stomp switch combination, and you could be looping, not just freezing. Not a criticism. Just a suggestion.jamesbwar
This is a great little pedal! Whether I need to sustain a note or chord while playing/riffing over the chord, and/or using it to hold a note in a live performance, this pedal can do it. It's a seamless sustain pedal that you can't hear when it's turned on or off. This far exceeded my expectations. It's a nice pedal it's like a sustain pedal for the piano but for the guitar. Really fun to use. Been using it on my gigs ever since I got it. Works great for ballads and intros. The only issue is the foot button makes a loud click. Seems that they would have put a silent one in over the loud clicking one. Also wondering why they couldn't have made it more like an actual pedal like a wah or volume pedal… I've never seen one for the guitar so I imagine it has something to do with capturing the sound. But electro-harmonix if you're reading there's an idea for you. I know a lot of guitarists that would love a pedal that you can work like a true sustain pedal.Marco

Not a bad little tremolo. The rate, depth, and waveform knobs let you dial in exactly the trem you want. Doesn't really add any color to your tone. Sounds good. Not to beat a dead horse, but opening the battery compartment is a pain. It's a little like my Digitech delay pedal where you can use the 1/4" plug on your guitar cable to depress the pins, but the Behringer pins are smaller than the 1/4" plug so you've got to use a pen or screwdriver to depress them. It's not a deal-breaker though. You'll get used to it. The plastic housing feels cheap and is a little frightening, but so far so good. Just remember it's a pedal, not a stompbox.bg1
Before I purchased the pedal I reviewed YouTube video published by the manufacturer to ascertain what the pedal did, how it operated and how the controls influenced the sound. This was invaluable for someone who knows nothing about effects pedals such as myself. Included in the box were some printed instructions that provided a basic guide to the operation of the pedal. After I received the pedal I was able to plug it in and get started with a minimum of fuss. The controls performed just as described in the YouTube video and I found it easy enough to use. The pedal appears to be quite robust and basically does what the manufacturer says it does. The pedal operates on a 9 volt battery or a 9 volt transformer ((not included) to operate from mains powder. In order to access the 9 volt battery compartment it is first necessary to remove the pedal, which I found to be somewhat inconvenient. I very quickly purchased a 9 volt transformer so I could run it from mains power supply. This was a much better option from my point of view. The pedal seems to be relatively inexpensive and appears to be quite good value for money. At this point I am quite satisfied with the product.Ian M.
I can't speak yet to how this unit will hold up over time, but I'll mostly be using it in my home studio. After a few minutes of playing with the settings, I honed in on the sound that I was looking for. Unbelievable that I could do that with a unit that was so inexpensive. So, I'm completely satisfied with it. I've had other Behringer products before with the same low cost/big features and I had the same reaction. My only small ding would be the battery replacement design. Would have been perfect with a small rubbery cover to the battery compartment on the bottom of the unit. But that aside, I would buy this unit again, knowing what I now know. Great value!6String106

Even now, when there are hundreds of pedals and builders to choose from, Boss remains at the top. Not only does this sound amazing, it looks absolutely killer. This is a new benchmark for visual esthetics. All of the knobs and functions are perfectly laid out… it's just a spectacular job all the way around by the design team. I debated getting the smaller pedal but am very happy I didn't. The extra control over the sound is well worth it to me, as is the ability to save presets. I also happen to hate blinking tap tempo lights and avoid delays that have them. This has tap tempo, but it's possible to keep the light off on this pedal. So far I have made 3 presets that allowed me to kick my other delay pedals from my board: Single head slap back delay (best I've ever created), go to solo delay, and spaced out trippy delay set to heads 1,3 and 4. And on that last preset, this larger version adds a 4th tape head not found in the vintage unit or the new smaller unit. I find it useful. I can't find a single fault on this pedal. This will go down as one of the all time great accomplishments for Boss, and for me… it'll be on my board for years to come.Joe
