I raise the issue of product description, which is not good. What's the difference between these strings and standard D'addario NYXL's – not very clear. What exactly is "balanced tension?" Not described very well. Retailers should be offering advice and information to customers who may want a change but don't know which to choose. Having said that, these strings are "very good" with good all round sound with a smooth tone. Are they any better that standard NYXL's – don't really know.John A.
I've used D'Addario for years but I've always had to change them before every gig (acid sweat I'm afraid… yuk). You know what I mean. Even after wiping the strings down, same thing… corrosion. No corrosion with these though, must be a new alloy. NYXLs last me at least 5 gigs and that includes a couple of hours practise every day. I bottled out before the last gig and changed them but not before I deliberately tried to break them with a few 2 and 2.5 step bends and they didn't. The tuning stability is excellent with very little break in time. OK they don't sound as 'zingy' after a couple of days but I can live with that and yes they are twice the price of regular XLs but if they last 5 times as long then I don't care, I'm quids in!gingoblin

I teach in a public school and thought I'd put these strings on and beat them to death in a matter of days. That was over a month ago, and my mid 70s Yamaha (solid cedar/rosewood) has never sounded better. I don't know what it is about these strings (components, care of manufacture), but they seem to really lay flat on the board, and I mean that in a good way. I have already admitted that my classical technique really blows, but when I try to bear down on the lower strings, the heavier wound strings almost seem to "roll" under my stupid sausage fingers. Not so these guys. Very pleasant sound and feel, I may have switched brands to Augustine Blacks. And did I mention Segovia's picture is on the label?…E. T.

Balanced tension strings aren't mysterious: they're the exact same as other strings, except that the gauges are chosen by progressive pounds of tension instead of just the thickness of the gauge. A string from a set that is balanced doesn't feel too sloppy or too stiff relative to its neighbors. I like these a lot and sometimes make my own sets with a tension chart and by buying singles. This 11 set is standard excellent D'addario quality but is a little heaver than normal to balance it, so I think I'll go back to the 10 set of these once the two I bought need changing and I'm buying a balanced set off the rack. I had purchased these to test and move from light gauge. I'm very pleased with the sound because, in my opinion, there is more crisp and tone than the light gauge! I play lots of Albinez, Tarrega and Bach concert level pieces. I am a huge Yairi fan and own a 1975 CY120. The tone of this guitar with regular nylon strings is rich and warm, if perhaps a bit dark. I was looking for a string to brighten up the trebles a bit and wanted to try fluorocarbon strings. These Savarez strings did the trick perfectly and now the trebles sparkle and the deep bass is more articulated and distinct. If you own a guitar you would consider "dark" sounding, this is the perfect string to brighten it up. Might not be the best set if your guitar is a bit thin sounding. This is a nice package set of guitar strings. You get ten sets in one box. that makes it so nice to not have to keep buying them so often. I really like how they packaged these guitar strings. the outer box is smaller than you would think for ten sets of guitar strings. But instead of having each set of guitar strings in another box individually, they have each set of guitar strings in its own bag, that is sealed. Made it easier to find a place to store the extra guitar strings for when I need them next. Was easier to stow an extra set in my guitar case since it was not in a stiff box, but in a sealed bag instead. I like how the guitar strings are color coded on the package and the string. These D'Addario EXL110-3D strings are great! They are bit heavier than the 'slinkys' that my son usually uses, but he really likes these too. They go on easy, and seem strong. They sound amazing! My son has 1 of the 3 sets on his strat, I have one set on my vintage 80's Ibanez, and the third set is a spare in case we break any strings. They give a rich on the lows and bright on the highs tone. They feel good on the fingers, and have the right amount of give. The intonation is excellent and these, apparently D'Addario's best selling strings, will possibly last a long time. I read that the core of these strings is hexagonal in shape, which helps the way the wrap sounds, feels and behaves. These strings have a really nice sustain too, and seem to stay in tune better than other brands we've used. Bought a 10 pack in 1992. Still have a couple sets left. My main Warmoth partscaster wears the strings out in about 5 years. You read that correctly, i leave those strings on until the winding on the D string wears off. Not that they break. I gig regularly and I use stainless steel frets on my partscasters. I believed in the SRV adage: Bigger strings give bigger tone. I picked up a set of these Augustines the last time they were on sale at MF. I confess I got 'em because they had Segovia on the package and were on sale. My heart sank when the strings arrived, they are the black label set and are marked "extra light tension." I teach in a public school and thought I'd put these strings on and beat them to death in a matter of days. That was over a month ago, and my mid 70s Yamaha (solid cedar/rosewood) has never sounded better. I don't know what it is about these strings (components, care of manufacture), but they seem to really lay flat on the board, and I mean that in a good way. I have already admitted that my classical technique really blows, but when I try to bear down on the lower strings, the heavier wound strings almost seem to "roll" under my stupid sausage fingers. Not so these guys. Very pleasant sound and feel, I may have switched brands to Augustine Blacks. And did I mention Segovia's picture is on the label?…E. T.

I bought the low tension strings for my 2003 Martin D18 GE. I have been playing them for only a short time but there is a difference in the feel – better- and the balance that I really like. Time will tell how long they last. I bought 3 sets so that I could give them a fair test over a long period.

I’ve used these Santa Cruz Mid Tensions for 4 string changes now on both my D18 and D35 and I continue to be impressed. I don’t think it’s just a marketing gimmick as these strings produce a more balanced and full sound than regular phosphor bronze sets. It’s a more mellow sound right away, almost like Monel strings. I am not playing classical enough to warrant hoarding 5 sets of strings i like these aquila alabastro series strings mostly because i play ukulele and use aquila strings regularly. here are 5 sets of unopened new old stock purchased maybe 5 or 6 years ago i figure i paid $40 back then and these have gone up to over $10 today so if someone can use them this is less than half price these don t go bad. i also use the aquila perla strings so i am going to hold on to them. you might want to go online and see what other players think but personally i like aquila strings and they have always been priced fairly compared to other brands and they consistently sound great. offers are welcomed but only realistic ones!

I am using normal tension Alabastro strings on my Yamaha NTX1200, which I play fingerstyle exclusively. The neck on this guitar is narrower than standard classical guitars. I find that the width of strings themselves is key to whether it can be played cleanly. I like Aquila strings I have tried: Rubino, Zaffiro, and these Alabastro strings. I like the quality of the Aquila nylon, which feels much less "plasticky" than most nylon strings. They set up quickly and stay in tune in a couple days time. I would say these compare favorably with D'Addario Pro Arte strings I have tried for sound and I just like the Aquilas better for feel. On a full-size classical guitar, I might never have ventured to anything other than Pro Arte strings, but the Aquilas really suit a narrower neck and the sound is excellent. The normal tension Alabastro strings seem slightly harder than normal Pro Arte strings, which for me is not a bad thing. I will probably experiment with superior tension Alabastros as I think they might be optimum for my guitar and style.Sparky B.
Reluctant to put these strings on my cheapest guitar – but thought it wouldn't hurt to try them out and see how they differ to other strings. Any string you put on fresh will make the guitar sound better – but these strings have brought life into the guitar that I thought didn't exist. Other "good" brands do not compare. They are "classical" strings, but I also use them on my flamenco guitars. I have a lattice braced instrument that I use Savarez New Cristal alliance trebles on. First & second nylon, and third carbon. This is naturally a bright guitar, and the first string in particular can be extremely bright. It took a lot of effort to produce sweet sounds on that first string. I purchased the Perla superior tension JUST to try the e first string with my Savarez. That Perla first string is so warm that its timbre is almost identical to the Savarez second string. The guitar now sounds perfectly balanced and sweet. Now, I don't finger pieces to stay on the second string. First string, seconds string sound the same!!! Of course, I wish they sold individual strings, but the price is right.Rob

I didn't expect balanced tension to make such a difference on bass strings, but wow! I slapped these on a new Fender Jaguar Bass with ebony fingerboard (fretted not fretless) and it was completely transformed into my favorite bass for playability and balance. I may use these on my MIA Geddy Lee Jazz Bass instead of the regular set, the next time I change strings. I hope they start offering Balanced Tension across their entire bass string line, including flats! Everyone commented on the sound at rehearsal; a more even cut-through in the mix. And even after a few weeks, this remains the case. So the strings exceeded my expectations in every way.
These strings preserve tension from standard E tuning when tuned down to standard D (DGCF). I used to struggle to play with dropped C string (using Hipshot) as the string was too loose. With this set I can prevent my bass neck from twisting while in standard D and still have good tension and playability when I drop to C for a song or two. Highly recommended for hard rock/ metal players that need lower tuning.Michal M.
I love these strings on SOME of my basses. They won't give you that twangy tone of a roundwound string. But if you like the sound of McCartneys bass on Come Together, that's a good example of how they sound. Dark, fat, with a strong fundemental. On a fretless bass they actually make it easier to hear the exact pitch of the fundemental frequency. (The frequency that the note is named for.) It's easier to play intune on a fretless bass, and with the right setup I'm getting the perfect amount of growl. My P bass (fretted) sounds like the old Motown recordings. The only way to be dissappointed with these strings is if you don't know what you're getting into. The strings are not modern and bright. They sound vintage and dark, but very very cool!9033charles

I have played hard rock for the last 37 years. I have always used strings in the 45-105 range, since that is generally what you find in the local music store shelves, and also was always suggested as the right guage for rock. I was looking for strings for a Stingray I recently traded for and put on a standard guage set of cobalts, They just didnt feel right or sound right. ( I have used them exclusively since they came out). Saw the D'addario Balanced Tension set listed in a 40-95 guage and decided to give them a try. I've been using the D'D '220 superlights for years on a variety of 34"-scale basses, and love their bright, piano-string modern tone. Those looking for a more-traditional thump might find the tone a bit edgy. The balanced-tension '220BTs are a surprising improvement; easier to play fast, and with a more-consistent volume/tone, string-to-string. They break in quickly, and stay in tune without drama. Great strings. I use these on a US Fender Lonestar and they stay in tune forever and sound nice and fat. Sometimes I leave a set on for many months, and they still sound great, even after losing their initial brighness. I wish they had a set with .013 for the high E, but that is not too hard to find. These are great for building strength in our fingers, making it much easier to play guitars with "normal" strings. Also, you can really attack the guitar hard. Be sure to properly set up your guitar for these strings!Mike

I bought a new guitar recently, spruce top, that is generally brighter than the guitar I had, a cedar top. I tried carbon strings because that is what I was used to. I result was a bright ping no matter where I plucked. It was bright but dead. I went on to look for nylon instead of carbon. This set had the corum basses which I loved already for their projection and sound. I have to say, this set changed my mind on nylon strings. After a week of settling, the strings project well and balance well with the basses. (Of course, I lost a bit of volume in comparison to the carbon strings) I get a different tone depending on where I hit the strings. The strings didn't die after three days. I thought that impossible with nylon strings. This is mainly due to my multiple bad experiences with D'addario. I will still go on and try other nylon strings from other makers but I must say, I will come back to this one.Chris
