From slight dirt to full on creamy plexi distortion. It’s all there. Cleans up with the guitar volume knob. Pairs well with other exotic effects. I have two SL drives, one for grit and the other set for lead, as well as an exotic AC booster before to add a bit of boost. I run the EP booster at the end for nice volume boost. I chose the SL Drive from a huge amount of drives on the market as I wanted something that fit on a small pedalboard, could provide a Marshall style sound at all gain levels as an alternative to amp gain, and which could work well with the BB MB pre-amp also by Xotic. This pedal really delivers. Although it takes time to set up and find the best sounds for personal preference, it provides a variety of useful tones across the spectra of volume, gain, and equalisation. The design is just so thoughtful and I like the possibility of running it at 18v, although at the moment 9v is better to my ears. I've had the SL drive for awhile now and try as I might I can't find anything that can kick it off my board. I've tried numerous other amp in a box pedals(Marshall and otherwise),overdrives and distortions but I keep coming back to this little guy. I guess I keep trying because I find it hard to believe that a pedal this small and this inexpensive(relatively) can't be outdone. I use this in conjunction with a standard Tumnus and the 2 together just can't be beat for me and I'm done spending $ trying.mike smith

Upgraded to this unit from a Pod XT Pro rack. This unit not only has amazing and better sounds but more flexible options and a wider array of effects and amps. Pros: -Sound is stunning. I've not done a side-by-side with a real amp mic'ed with a specific mic in a certain position, but it's utterly convincing to my ears. -Blocks can be re-ordered without restriction. For example, want to daisy chain two amps to get that "you really got me" sound? You can do it and it actually works. -Multiple outs and routing -Flexible pedal assignments. You can connect up another two external footswitches (or exp pedals) and assign to any block. OR, you can assign more than one block to a single pedal (so you could activate a tube screamer, digital delay, and anything else with a single press ready for your solo). OR, you can just use a snapshot and change dozens of parameters with a single press. No more "dancing" around the pedal board, hitting the wrong pedals in the process, looking like an utter berk etc. -Preset sounds with flexible ways to work through them. At a gig I don't have time to change an abundance of settings so have a preset for each song. Sound completely changed in half a second. Next song started without hesitation. -All functions of the unit look like they can be configured through the front panel without having to use the Windows or MAC editor. Cons -Terrible, terrible power supply brick. I can't believe Line 6 sell it like this. They even know it's rubbish – the manual says something to the effect of: "we know the power supply is big but it needs to be special to give you enough juice". Purchased as a desktop amp to replace a Kemper head and footswitch, primarily for desktop and recording purposes. The unit is very solidly made and takes up next to no space. Although there are limited knobs on the unit itself, the Windows HX Edit software is excellent and makes it super easy to configure presets. Whilst the HX Stomp's effects blocks are very limited compared with the full size Helix, if you typically use a straightforward setup with, say 3-4 pedals, an amp, a cab/IR I don't see why this tiny device couldn't replace an entire rig. One minus point is that the external PSU has poorly designed plastic adapters for different plug types (UK/Euro etc) which disconnect from the PSU far too easily. First time I took mine out the house I unplugged it and didn't realise the adapter had remained in the socket. I had to buy a US to UK adapter. Something to be aware of if you plan on taking this on the road. Also bear in mind that at the time of writing it's not possible to share presets between Stomp and the larger Helix units.

The delays, the mods, the tube amps, the pedals the IR options. The most exciting thing about this is the sound! The Helix class software lets me play like me and sound like me. However, another fantastic feature is the edit-ability, and that you get Helix Native for 99 bucks that loads in full Helix profiles with tons of presets. I love loading the profiles into Native and scaling them down for Stomp XL. Another is the portability. I can tote this thing around everywhere and not even feel the pain of dragging around heavy processing gear. I haven't had it long and am just digging in, but i can tell you, it gets more and more exciting what the Helix class software/ HX Stomp can do the further I go. i wanted to compare this to my boss hm-2 pedal but i can't get to it at this time, so i'll have to do this by itself. this is a very nice distortion pedal. again the plastic casing is durable and inexpensive ,so you're getting a good pedal for the money.the level and distortion controls are sensitive- i consider a plus. i do wish there was more bass in the in the low frequency control. now you might be asking, "why don't i cut back on the high frequency control?". here's why : the high frequency control appears to be a combination high frequency/gain control! the more you turn it up, the more gain. combined with the sensitive dist/level controls this is a nice feature if you want that. i like it . i can always boost the bass on the amp/EQ/whatever. i like to use different dimensions of distortions and if you are like me ,i recommend this.thurstonnalley
I guess I'm more of a roady/studio guy than I am an artist, as I've always got more out of turning knobs then actually playing music lol. I bought this pedal for one reason and one sound only. The Swedish "chainsaw" guitar tone of the 90's that came out of Sunlight Studios that was popularized by bands like Entombed and Dismembered. I think it sounds incredibly good considering I bought it NEW for 25 bones plus shipping! The distortion is sometimes a bit over the top, but cleans up when you roll back the volume knobs on the guitar. I imagine you could really get some interesting tones going if you paired this pedal with a compressor and eq both before and after it in the signal chain (and with Behringer that's actually an affordable option), and of course, a tube amp, as most of the bands with that sound supposedly used Peavey 5150 tube heads. Very nasty distortion pedal, if you could travel back in time to the 90's you could probably sell this to a metal head for absolutely ridiculous amounts of money. If you are not buying this pedal for a certain "Swedish death metal" sound or just metal in general, I would not recommend this pedal, as there are probably much better pedals out there for what you need. Its made out of plastic which I personally don't mind, as I'm not a touring or gigging musician. If I stomped on it several times a night for half a year I dunno how that would work out. Not a big fan of the color, but then again, I didn't buy this pedal for aesthetic value. I was pleased with the Radial direct drive amp simulator. However I realised that my existing distortion pedal wasn't going to be enough to be amp free but still maintain decent distortion. So I thought I'd try the company's tonebone trimode. It solved the problem and gave me more besides. The price was half price, reconditioned. The unit includes a tube and because of this gives an authentic tube amp sound. I was struck by the power of the unit. To get the same effects from an amp you would really have to crank it. At the same time there is subtle variety here because you can have your searing leads on one channel, and an on the edge of breaking up sound on your rhythm channel. There are plenty of fine tuning functions on the unit. It takes some experimentation to get your two channels the way you want, but once set you are good to go. So you can dial in subtle distortion right through to full raunch. The distortion remains transparent, but meshes well with a sweet cream pedal I have. The unit itself easily creates tube screamer sounds if that's what you want. A solid unit,it certainly looks like its built to last. When I first played it, it would sometimes drop volume on the lead channel, but Radial do explain about this on their website, and its very easy to rectify- just putting a lead jack in and out of a send/return input a few times if you dont use it. The problem went away without my needing to do this. The only other issue is that the adapter is an unusual power specification, but the unit does come with its own adapter. Certainly recommend. My comment is about the PileDriver circuit as I did mine as a DIY project. I used mine with my custom passive J-bass at a jam session, the bass rig is set up for a P-bass with Quarter Pounders (hot pickups compared to my J-bass pickups) … I adjusted the PileDriver to get my bass signal up the the level the amp was set up for then I could plug in and play and not even touch the amp. A friend has a USA Strat with Vintage noiseless (toneless) pickups, using the PileDriver he could switch from his hot P-90 Casino (straight in) to the Strat with the PileDriver without completely changing the entire amp's settings … we brought the treble down a number or two … that was the only amp adjustment. Recently I gave my DIY PileDriver to a friend who plays violin/fiddle, he has a Barcus-Berry bridge and with the PileDriver can plug straight into a mixer at a jam session and have decent tone because of the signal buffering (the output impedance works with a mixer a lot better than the piezo pickup).Rock_Mumbles
While I had fun listening to music out in the garage putting this together, I wouldn't use it to make music. There was a barely audible boost in volume when in use and it only occurred in the last 1/4 turn of the knob. Additionally, the foot switch made a loud pop through the cabs when engaged and disengaged. This kit was super easy to put together, and sounds great with no noise. I personally would have preferred at least an option for an AC adapter, but the circuit was simple enough to modify it to fit my needs. The instructions were very straight forward and easy to follow, and the diagrams are clear and simple to understand. This is a great introduction to building pedals, and for the price, I might buy a couple more of these to use as the start of my own circuit designs. It's a clean boost, not a lot of features needed here. Since it's intended to be run on a battery, I assume there is no LED to conserve power, in addition to simplifying the circuit by not including it. I went ahead and wired it up for use with a power supply instead of a battery, and it works very well that way, but I have some experience with electronics so I can't speak to how simple that would be for true beginners. Everything seems to be of decent quality, especially for the price. I might experiment with a different potentiometer in the future, though. The included pot seems to only affect the level once you get up past half-way, but that might just be a matter of personal preference. It's a pedal for a price comperable to what I've seen people charging for just an enclosure this size. You can't beat it for an entry into the world of DIY effects pedals.BJRory

This Product was to be used to split the output of my pedalboard into 4 amps. it worked, but it is very noisy, adds a terrible hiss and ringing signal into the amps. as soon as I unplugged them and ran through to 2 amps no noise what so ever. I thought maybe it was the pedal board. Nope the splitters are not very good at all, after running through just a clean signal the same thing happened. I just wanted to have something to just split the signal to go into 2 left amps and 2 right amps. This buffered splitter is not for that purpose. It is all around noisy period. I don't have any idea how these splitters would be useful for any purpose at all. I had to give it one star. Purchased this to split my guitar signal for routing to amplifier and instrument reference input of vocal harmony processor. Hooked up and immediately heard loud AC / Ground Loop hum. Even touching the chassis of the pedal generated the hum – even when not in the signal chain. Experimented with multiple configurations (amps, pedals, power supplies, cables, routing, etc.). All results were the same: Whenever this device was in the signal chain, the noise was of a level which rendered the signal unusable. Whenever, removed from the signal chain, noise was gone. This an excellent buffer splitter for doing exactly what it's designed to do at this price point. For those experiencing ground loop issues and noise, you need to correct that with the power or invest in a splitter MADE to mitigate ground loops. I don't use this to run two amps. My use is for the buffer as I have a long cable run and split the signal to my tuner that is true bypass so that I'm removing it from my signal chain while adding a needed buffer. Works perfect!EGG

This pedal has gotta be one of the most underrated OD pedals out there…. especially given its price point. I have A,B'd this thing against modded BD-2s, modded OD-3's, and the SD-1W and the Mojomojo is just bigger and less tinty. I dont want it to be, but it is. It is a wonderful sounding OD and is great for OD rhythm sounds. It is in the cranked Marshall class of OD's so not to be confused with the green OD pedal. The only area that some of my modded ODs beat it in is sustain. It does tail off on lead stuff sooner than some more expensive pedals. That is the only area that it doesn't win though. You can also use this as an always on boost as well. All in all this thing always seems to knock more expensive pedals off my board time and time again. Highly recommend this pedal and at it's price point it should be in all OD aficionados collection.KL
I use the MojoMojo on my Fender G-DEC Junior and it helps to make the amp sound warmer, richer and fuller. The MojoMojo when dialed in right adds a very slight and suttle low mid thickness, hard to explain. I find its not a "set it and forget it" type of pedal (i.e. Tube screamer), for each amp setting I have to dial it in or it will sound muddy but with a little tweaking between the amp settings and the pedal settings (usually level settings rather than tone knobs) I can get them matched tonally and sonically, bass tone knob is usually set pretty low. I use low output humbuckers and it works great with these. I can get nice overdrive without changing the amps overall characteristic sound.

Upgraded to this unit from a Pod XT Pro rack. This unit not only has amazing and better sounds but more flexible options and a wider array of effects and amps. Pros: -Sound is stunning. I've not done a side-by-side with a real amp mic'ed with a specific mic in a certain position, but it's utterly convincing to my ears. -Blocks can be re-ordered without restriction. For example, want to daisy chain two amps to get that "you really got me" sound? You can do it and it actually works. -Multiple outs and routing -Flexible pedal assignments. You can connect up another two external footswitches (or exp pedals) and assign to any block. OR, you can assign more than one block to a single pedal (so you could activate a tube screamer, digital delay, and anything else with a single press ready for your solo). OR, you can just use a snapshot and change dozens of parameters with a single press. No more "dancing" around the pedal board, hitting the wrong pedals in the process, looking like an utter berk etc. -Preset sounds with flexible ways to work through them. At a gig I don't have time to change an abundance of settings so have a preset for each song. Sound completely changed in half a second. Next song started without hesitation. -All functions of the unit look like they can be configured through the front panel without having to use the Windows or MAC editor. Cons -Terrible, terrible power supply brick. I can't believe Line 6 sell it like this. They even know it's rubbish – the manual says something to the effect of: "we know the power supply is big but it needs to be special to give you enough juice". Big is not the problem – being stuck upwards in the air from your mains socket standing proud like, er, ahem, well something unmentionable is the problem. Plus when you try to unplug it, the power supply comes in half leaving a little bit left in the mains socket. Which will inevitably get left at a gig. Can't wait for that to happen. -limited number of presets. I need a preset for each of 60 songs. I keep a copy of each preset as a master then duplicate them in the order of the night's set list into other presets – so with that I need at least 120 presets, allowing myself one or two to fiddle with. If I recall correctly this has around 126. Best not learn three more songs that need a different sound each. -It's a little difficult to program the thing – the button layout is confusing and unintuitive compared to the Pod XT pro I have just replaced. I can make the trade-off for the sound but this would not work for many I suspect. -Windows or MAC editor – really? Where do I set that up then? Ah yes I just need a $1000 laptop or a chuffing great desktop unit and monitor to hand. I want to spend my money on guitar gear, thanks! Some other vendors have bluetooth and android apps, line 6 for a change is behind the curve. Two final points. 1) If you need something easier to use buy something with more buttons, knobs and pedal switches. 2) If you really like a particular sound, go out and buy the real amp / effect. You just can't beat the real thing. But this gets very, very close, and of course you have several hundred "things" to choose from with no crackles, no mic stand to get kicked, etc etc.
Purchased as a desktop amp to replace a Kemper head and footswitch, primarily for desktop and recording purposes. The unit is very solidly made and takes up next to no space. Although there are limited knobs on the unit itself, the Windows HX Edit software is excellent and makes it super easy to configure presets. Whilst the HX Stomp's effects blocks are very limited compared with the full size Helix, if you typically use a straightforward setup with, say 3-4 pedals, an amp, a cab/IR I don't see why this tiny device couldn't replace an entire rig. One minus point is that the external PSU has poorly designed plastic adapters for different plug types (UK/Euro etc) which disconnect from the PSU far too easily. First time I took mine out the house I unplugged it and didn't realise the adapter had remained in the socket. I had to buy a US to UK adapter. Something to be aware of if you plan on taking this on the road. Also bear in mind that at the time of writing it's not possible to share presets between Stomp and the larger Helix units.
Where do I begin? What a fantastic unit. I've played it both through a tube, stereo 4×12 rig and an FRFR and it sounds incredible through both. The delays, the mods, the tube amps, the pedals the IR options. The most exciting thing about this is the sound! The Helix class software lets me play like me and sound like me. However, another fantastic feature is the edit-ability, and that you get Helix Native for 99 bucks that loads in full Helix profiles with tons of presets. I love loading the profiles into Native and scaling them down for Stomp XL. Another is the portability. I can tote this thing around everywhere and not even feel the pain of dragging around heavy processing gear. I haven't had it long and am just digging in, but i can tell you, it gets more and more exciting what the Helix class software/ HX Stomp can do the further I go. I picked up one of these beauties after trying a bunch of units at my local GC. It was the last one I tried and I stopped right there. At the lower settings it gives me that great tube growl without having to turn my Amp up to earsplitting volumes. At higher settings the depth and saturation increase without becoming muddy or loosing definition. If you are a metal head you'll probably not want this one, but if heavy blues, rock, or covers are your thing you will love it. The crunch button adds a nice boost overall especially in the upper ranges without adding the harshness of other units. Built like a tank with battery or AC power and at this price it's a steal. I've even used it with my acoustic/electric with interesting results. Go get one!Donald

I am jazz guitar player , thus clean sounds most of the time , very few space to effects , NO WAY for distortion. However this pedal adds a modern and vintage grit to the sound. Modern, because some overdrive adds some nuances to the jazz clean sound , vintage because of the old blues and the contamination and color that offers to jazz in any form. Excellent pedal. I had never owned an original BD2 before i bought this so I couldn't truly compare but from what I understand the only real difference is the switch above the tone knob. Standard voicing(BD2) or custom voicing. I prefer the custom and leave it set on that always. The difference is relatively subtle but I find the custom sound to be just a little bit brighter. Also seems to me that it gives just a tad more sustain and has just a little bit more crunch at high gain settings. I pretty much never turn this pedal off when I'm playing. I use it for all of my so-called clean tones. I put a compressor in front of it and I keep the gain rolled back and it adds a very subtle but amazing coloration to the tone. And then I also use it for 90 percent of my high-gain tones. Paired with a fuzz in front and an EQ and reverb after I can get a variety of tones that I love from heavy doom sludgey stoner rock to classic fender tube amp tones to Clapton sounding fuzziness to massive walls of shoegazey thickness ala my bloody valentine. It works fantastic with both single coils and humbuckers. I use it with my les paul and telecaster and it reacts perfectly to both of them. I even use it with my bass sometimes it works surprisingly well just doesn't exactly fit with a bass cuts out some of the low end but good for some stuff. In short this an awesome pedal I love it. This is the go to pedal my blues guitar tutor in the US uses and I wanted to emulate his sound, and I have achieved that. I bought the BD2 rather than the BD1 in order to obtain the improved sound quality over the original pedal and I am very content that I did. It has a much richer sound. But for me the stand out characteristic is the extra sustain which I find fantastic. Once you have tuned your ear, paying more for quality becomes part of the journey. Is it value for the money? This pedal delivers what is promised. Yes it is a tube screamer clone, but it has more gain on tap, and the 3 way selector switch allows for more crunch and compression or to use as a boost as well as the the normal Tubescreamer functions. The down side with this is that I clearly received a pedal that had been opened before and was missing all the inserts, device instruction, warranty slip, sticker etc.. This may not seem like the biggest deal but that means this product isn't new. Just like physical retailers do it should have been sold at a discount and I should have been sent a new pedal because that was what I ordered. I just recently received another pedal from them "new" that didn't even come in a box it was just bubble wrapped which makes me think it was a floor model. Not new at all. Very disappointed.Micah

I have been really enjoying adding this pedal to my collection. Great clarity, plenty of gain and volume. A working tone knob is not as common as you would think since it is on most overdrive pedals but this is one that works and has a good usable range unlike some other brands I shouldn't have to mention. This has worked well on my solid state amp, modeling amp, modeling pedal, and my tube amps. This is a great overdrive pedal to have.Doug

They have gotten expensive over the years (along with everything else) but it's history and reputation speaks for itself. I've had various Boss pedals over the course of 30 years and I have never, ever, not once had one that failed or malfunctioned. I wanted a cheaper alternative but what made me commit to this pedal, once again, was it's true bypass/buffer capabilities. I'm using this one differently than I've customarily have used them in the past. This is to be used in a pedalboard dedicated to an electrified Kalimba (pictured below). I'll be wiring it up soon. The Boss is the ONLY new pedal that will be on that board. All that are there now I've had sitting for years and decided to put them to use.Christopher
Perhaps EQ is not the most exciting of pedals compared to other effects, but this really does make an enormous difference to your sound and help you get the best from the rest of your gear. Boost the mids to stand out from bass. Scoop the mids and boost bass/treble to sound like Metallica. Use the independent Level control as an overall volume boost (or limit – but who wants that?!) Extremely easy to set up and configure, in Boss's usual bullet-proof format. Highly recommended.Steve M.
Brilliant on-the-spot tone-shaping tool. Opens up virtually infinite sound possibilities, very handy when stacking overdrives with some or a lot of overlap in their tonal voicings. Also great for approximating the tones of completely different styles of pickups. Small adjustments tend to work best, a subtle nudge of the slider in the problematic frequency band is often all you need. Equally, you can throw that out and morph the tonal profile to something incredibly different. After my tuner it's hands-down the most indispensable pedal on my board. Allows me to shape the one tone control on the Pro Junior IV into even more harmonic/percussive/airy/creamy/bell-like territory. Been guitaring more or less 20 years now and i could probably count on one hand the amount of reviews I've been compelled to write, if that's an indicator of how game-changing the GE-7 has been to the fundamental way in which i dial in a tone.Mark

My husband has never used one before and was mixing his shakes by hand so I bought him one. He loves it. He even purchased a bunch of smoothie ingredients today to try his hand at that. For someone who has recently started learning guitar and not in a position to own a classic or boutique tube amp yet, HX Stomp has transformed my learning experience. While not a cheap pedal to buy its much cheaper that its direct competition but with equal sound quality and flexibility. Its also much cheaper than buying a proper tube amp. Being a new player, it allows me to explore all manner of different amps to find a sound I like so when I eventually do buy a tube amp I’ll know exactly what I like. The size of the unit is just perfect for fitting onto a pedalboard and sounds amazing along with my existing pedals before it in the chain or in the Stomps FX Loop. Matching the tones of the songs I’m leaning is both fun and just amazing how close I can get in a few simple steps. It also lets me experiences how different the guitar feels to play through different style amps. With just simple fretting techniques I’m sounding like I’m an 80’s rock star which is something my small practice amp couldn’t even begin to reproduce. The sound quality and variety of tones available from sweet and clean to pure filth is a complete joy to use. My wife also loves it as she can no longer hear my daily practicing as now playing through headphones is so simple.GARETH W.
The HX Stomp is a ridiculous powerhouse of a pedal. I'm not a modeling expert or guru, but this thing is incredibly intuitive and fun to use. I've previously owned M9s and M5s and this picks up where those left off. If you're a fan of multi effect pedals, and interested in amp modeling look no further. You have to be strategic with what combinations you want since the DSP isn't unlimited, but I don't find that to be too much of a nuisance. Since you can run your analog pedals into it, efx loop or not, you have so many tonal options. I've purchased an external footswitch to add buttons and a dedicated tap tempo which I'd recommend to add functionality and ease of use. Besides those additions and minor gripes I'd highly recommend this unit. *The PolyCapo effect is my favorite! I use it to emulate a baritone guitar without needing to own another guitar and that alone to me justifies the price.
This unit is amazing value for money, so many tones available through the choices of effects amps and cabs it is almost overwhelming! There is however an amazing online community of HX Stomp users who share a huge amount of expertise so it was very easy to get up and running with the pedal. Brilliant. Only thing you should be aware of is that sticking it on a pedalboard isn’t the easiest thing in the world, it’s quite highly powered and the connector is non standard so you would need an adaptor to run it on a pedalboard. But again a quick search online will provide all the information you need.Michael H.
