Dueling Banjos Electric Guitar For Sale (2024 Update)

I mainly play guitar and own a 5 string banjo, but wanted something with banjo tone that I could easily work through guitar chords with, so I won't have to re-learn songs for rhythm accompaniment with others in my jam group. This banjitar fits the bill perfectly. It does require setup upon arrival. Go ahead and remove the strings it comes with, oil the frets and put on your patient pants while initiating set up. I now have the action exactly how I want it … and it stays relatively in tune day to day! That is not always typical for instruments with floating bridges. Like most who buy this banjitar, I'm a guitarist. I liked the general sound of it, but was "shamed" by my real banjoists who pointed out that many of the finger picking runs just don't work on the 6 string. I bought the case (you should always buy a case!) but in the end, returned it to buy a 5 string, knowing I'm going to be a rank beginner for years. (Got the Washburn B9 … with a case) It came without the bridge set up, but that is really not that difficult. put it at double the distance from nut to 12th fret, tune the open string and then adjust the bridge to put the 12th fret in tune. (it probably won't be straight across)Torb

This is an affordable, well built, smooth playing, and sweet sounding banjo. It is not at all fancy. the wood is sanded and seems sealed but that's about it. But it's good quality maple. No mother of pearl inlays but the neck is smooth playin' and is comfortable while giving the strings space. Also those frets are filed and flush. 16 hooks but they're steel. Not planetary machine heads but they're closed back and hold tune. Piezo pickup isn't fancy but it works very well and allows you to start recording without setting up a mic, and if you want to do a venue you're ready for an amp. Finally it has a great tone. I mean seriously for an instrument in this price range (and above), it's just a lovely sound. So yes this is an entry level Deering. But it's not really an entry level instrument. It's bare bones but those bones are high quality. You can tell this isn't an afterthought instrument for Deering. They wanted an excellent entry point. Yes you can get other banjos for less, but you will NOT regret picking this one up. Also, this is a Made in the USA instrument. Not designed. Made. How many entry levels can boast that?Slide Devil

As a first time banjo buyer I wanted one not too expensive but with good quality. Everywhere I researched the Deering banjos were highly recommended. I had looked at some less expensive imports and found poorly cast metal parts and sharp frets. Spending a bit more got me a banjo with fine quality — impeccable woodwork, clean metal parts, quality tuners, and was literally ready to tune up and play right out of the box. Online lessons and educational videos from Deering staff are a great help and silly as it sounds, made me feel like part of the family. If you can swing it, it's worth a bit more for quality instrument that plays beautifully right out of the box. I really have no complaints at all, as this banjo surpassed my expectations!Tim

I bought my lightly used Deering Artisan 5 string open back banjo off of Ebay 11 months ago. I've played it nearly everyday since the day it arrived in it's original box covered with vintage style graphics. This is my first banjo and I can't put it down. I played ukulele, guitar and my husband's Deering prior to getting my banjo. I have picked up many other banjos and played songs on them just to see what other banjos sound and feel like. I still love my Artisan banjo compared to even some more expensive banjos. My Artisan is light, it is very attractive, it is comfortable to play and I think it sounds good. The Artisan comes with the railroad spikes installed, so capoing the 5th string is simple. I play with friends who have more expensive banjos and the Artisan holds it's own.Dianna Moulder Price

It has a really nice mahogany look. Not glossy but natural. The feel is real nice. Plays like a dream. Truss rod & intonation right out of the box is great. You can use plain acoustic guitar strings as long as the ball end is hollow in the middle of the ball (Martin & D'Addario both has).Like a Bigsby, the tail piece has 6 posts. the hollow part of the ball will fit in those posts. Considering that I've played guitar for over 40 years, and played banjo for less than 6 months, this feels pretty good. Don't get me wrong. For good old claw hammer bluegrass, I'll use my 5 string. But for everything else (and guitar playing friends that want the banjo effect while I play mandolin), this is great.Bobtec

I own both the concert and tenor scale Deering Banjo Ukuleles. I prefer the larger pots on Deering instruments over more traditional banjo-ukulele hybrids. I find the larger pot gives more depth to the sound – notes really bloom when playing fingerstyle arpeggios, and strummed chords are fuller and have more "whack" than "slap." Volume is not an issue – I can hold my own with acoustic guitars and other instruments. When I play my other, non-Deering banjo ukulele, people assume it's a toy or a novelty because of its miniature appearance. This is not often the case with my Deering. Its full sized pot, carved headstock, and pro tuners give a serious impression. It's full sound isn't tinny – it sits nicely in the mix. Also, I use a banjo strap when playing – the big pot means you have to strap it on like a banjo and not hold it like a ukulele. If you're into George Formby, Tiny Tim, and more traditional banjolele applications, this instrument may not be to your liking. But if you have an open mind and want a well-built, logical take on a banjo-ukulele hybrid, I don't think you'll be disappointed.Adam

I've been playing guitar for about 25 years for my own pleasure. I own about a dozen guitars ranging from couple of Martins, a Taylor, a Guild, a Takamine and a few electric guitars. I mostly play finger style and this instrument is just a blast and a fun break for a different sound without having to learn a new instrument. Finger style blues sounds really good as does old Rick classics. I can now say I've played Staiirway to Heaven on the banjo. Lol. Neil Young sounds great too. Really a "goodtime" instrument.Picker

I write as one who, until a couple of weeks ago, had not so much as been in the same room with anything remotely resembling a banjo. I have been playing ukulele for a little over a year, after 20+ years as a guitarist. Under the influence of the estimable Fred Sokolow, I began foraging amongst blues and bluegrass traditions for uke, and wanted one that would work well for that purpose. I considered a Reso uke; decided instead on a banjo uke. I purchased and have been playing the concert-neck Deering for a little over two weeks, and love everything about it. The tone works well for both traditional blues and bluegrass tunes when I venture cautiously and fearfully into clawhammer and fingerpicking applications. This uke works well also when strumming jazz-inflected standards like "After You've Gone"–actually, I find that it works marvelously for just about anything I might want to try on a uke at this stage. The workmanship on this instrument is excellent. It holds tune just about perfectly after only a couple of days of breaking it in. Potential buyers should be aware going in that this Deering model consists of a concert-scale ukulele neck attached to a *full-sized* banjo pot; some may find that off-putting, but, for what it's worth–I don't. If anything, that dynamic has gotten me looking really hard at acquiring a full-sized banjo. To sum up: excellent instrument for uke applications, wonderfully crafted and worth every penny.Ken M.

Guitar was not setup properly had to adjust everything. The cheap Vinyl that's glued on otter edge already pealing. When it arrived there was glue seeping from the edges, didnt realize until I touched it & ruined my $$60.00 gold plated strings. I replaced truss rod cover, junk. Knobs dont match/ugly replaced. Nut was junk, not cut right, made my own in my shop. The glue seepage awful. Removed cheap Vinyl treating guitar to remove exess glue, ridiculous. Huge scratch on back chip on rear bottom of neck where vynil was joined. For the 60th anniversary edition… Worst I've ever seen! My original 59 still looks plays and sounds fantastic. Cutting corners using cheap materials and trying to save money is no way to honor guitars from our past. Sound not that great but I'll have to replace some wiring & tuners as well. stuff to get it to sound halfway decent. I play in a Zeppelin tribute band at all the hotels and in Vegas, definitely not stage worthy! What a major disappointment. Way over priced. My appraisal $80.00 and that's being generous. Someone in the band said we should do one of those early 60's songs. I listened to it, and it clearly had that 12-string jangle so characteristic of the period. The best thing for that is a Rickenbacker 12-string, but I wasn't going to spring for that for just a few songs. So I zeroed in on a few possibilities, including this Danelectro, and the Dean Boca and the Ibanez Artcore in about the same price range. But the Dano is of course pretty much the exact same instrument that they made back then, and it is arguably better now than it ever was. It was always an inexpensive brand, but had the distinction that a lot of famous people played them. Therefore it has that "original vibe", like the Rickenbacker, but at a fraction of the price. So the Dano was the obvious choice, and I got this NOS version (No-S = no S or F hole which some other models have and the originals did). They say it is still made from Masonite, but you can't tell since it is completely painted and while the website says it is laminated, it is very light-weight. And it still has that textured plastic tape around the whole perimeter like it's supposed to have. The neck strap button is in an awkward location, so you may have to cut a piece off your strap to make it fit (I did, and I replaced my strap buttons with Schaller black strap locks). These guitars are made in Korea, and the build quality is excellent. I was afraid that I'd have get a setup, but the one I received has a fine neck with a nice rosewood finger board, has low action and plays easily enough (for a 12-string), so I'm going to leave it as is. The sound is great! It has that unique Dano sound because of the two lipstick pickups. It may be too bright when using the bridge pickup only, but the thing is you get used to the tone really quickly, so it may work just fine. It certainly will cut through the mix! It is louder when using both pickups, which is probably what I will use most of the time. In sum, I'm very happy with it! It will do!Willy

I didn't have high hopes for a 12 string electric at this price point, but I also couldn't resist, and WOW – am I completely satisfied! This guitar plays really well. It came with a good set-up and when I fine tuned it all the systems worked as they should. You can even adjust intonation on all twelve strings. Thus far the neck has been straight and easily adjusts to string or environmental conditions – I've given it a slight adjustment once it acclimated to my desert conditions and since it has been stable and true. Of course I should protect my guitar from the elements, and I bought a gig bag, but it stays out pretty much constantly and is used daily. This guitar is tons of fun. It easily does the Byrds style of 12 string sound. Also, I never knew just how many early Beatles riff where on 12 string until I started messing with this guitar. It's a blast. I own a Rick 6 string and have always wanted an electric 12. This Danelectro is great quality and great fun and it more than satisfies my itch (for now) at fraction of the price. You will not regret buying this guitar – it will unlock a new world!Mike

I was after that Banjo of a Lifetime, so called on the good Deering Folks. My taste in banjo music is broadly based; encompassing the earliest American Classic Banjo Style, through the great miracle of the ‘20s Tenor Banjo Legend Mr. Harry Reser, all through everything Blugrass and Country. Already had a Deering Midnight Special 5-stringer which I outfitted with Nylgut strings for the Classic Banjo Sound of the likes of Van Eps, Ossman and Bradbury. Worked open backed beyond my wild expectations. But I wanted access to Tenor and Plectrum vantage points, principally for my lifelong admiration of Mr. Harry Reser’s Incredible Virtuosity. My father also had known Reser personally. So I have some very special interest. Being used to a longer neck banjo than most Tenor instruments, I was steered towards an extremely high quality 4-string Plectrum. A Deering could hold tension on such a long neck for that A above middle C. For Traditional Tenor tuning. Now steel of sufficient tensile strength was some issue of course! But solved. And so I had a long neck Tenor, in the form of an incredibly beautiful instrument the Deering Company custom built and inscribed to me. Even better (and infinitely easier on old hands) the Deering Plectrum is readily set to the great Chicago-Style Tuning. And then it’s playable by all my guitar friends. Do they ever love the SOUND! None better than me! So I cannot say enough in praise of the Deering Family. They are truly friends of music and supreme Craftsmen. You have set me in wonderful new musical directions. Thank you! I own a later model Sierra in maple. Like Jens Kruger says, it has all the parts for a good banjo. I would add parts AND workmanship. It’s really amazing how loud this in-amplified instrument can be yet soft if you pick lightly. So it’s very lively and responsive and it really feels that way while playing it. Not as fancy as high end banjos with the regular chrome hardware and matte finish but this is a banjo to be played and played a lot. The slender neck is great and the whole package is simply wonderful and a great price for an instrument with this sound. Now I’ll tell you I picked mine up from a pawn shop in Tennessee. Someone had bought it new right down the road in 2014. Maybe played it a few times. Took the head off, slapped it all back together and pawned it a year later. What a shame. I cleaned it up, got everything back the way it should be, and now it gets played daily and sounds great too. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another Deering and I recommend them to my music friends.Vince K.

I've been playing my Hartford (grenadillo tone ring) on the road for a little over a year now, so I thought I'd share my thoughts on this beautiful banjo. I am absolutely amazed that Deering has found a way to pack so much volume and tone into this light weight banjo! The note separation is incredible, the volume is neck and neck with my Deering Calico, and the satin finish feels great to the touch. Many sound engineers have commented on how beautifully the banjo comes across on a microphone and after listening to our live recordings, I couldn't agree more. The tone variation between the x and y positions (close to the bridge/away from the bridge) on this model is remarkable! I can dig in and play straight ahead powerful bluegrass, or by moving my right hand closer to the neck, I can evoke a beautiful fat warm tone, all without sacrificing any volume. Now, this review would not be complete without mentioning how absolutely gorgeous this instrument is! Perfect fit and finish, wonderfully understated inlays, silky satin finish, and a handsome dark chocolate wood stain. Easily one of the prettiest banjos I have ever seen. I bought this banjo a few months ago and mostly let it set because the tuning was bad and B string sounded "bong-ie". I had to leave it alone until I had the time to do a setup on it. I did so tonight and here are some of the things I found: Neck was off center and strings out of line, nuts on both Coordinator Rods were loose and one rods hole in rim drilled out of line with the other (2 rods), head tension was not same around the head, neck was loose and needed raising and string height needed adjustment. I got it sounding good now with much work but you need to know how to do all that or have a good setup technician. It appeared to have been thrown together like factories do on cheaper instruments. It is a heavy banjo and I like it. Beautiful appearance and not bad sounding after setting up. It's a keeper.Deltason

Overall: I have an 1958 Kay banjo and felt it was time to get a new banjo. I ordered this after doing a lot of research on it. I could not wait until I got home from work as I got a notice that it had been delivered. I unboxed a beautiful looking banjo. It does have some weight to it. I noticed the bridge was not in place for shipping. I watched a few videos on how to put the bridge in the correwct spot on the skin. It involves measuring from the inside of the top nut to the 12th fret and marking the same measurement from thye 12th fret toward the tail. I set it in place and it sounded just right. I then took it to a local music store to check it out for me. He played it like a pro up and down the neck and said I nailed it ! He then tightened the drum down for me. It is an awesome banjo ! The guitar kit arrived in perfect condition by FedEx and went together fine. My wife, the gift recipient, loves it. The guitar, being new, is taking a little while to stabilize on tuning but it's working out okay. The red color is nice. My wife's only complaint is that the little amplifier doesn't have "fuzz" settings, but I told her they will come when she learns how to play. Individual pieces of the kit can be upgraded in future as desired.Kenneth

Very surprised at the value and sound of the Pyle Pro Package. The guitar looks great with woodgrain coming through the sunburst finish. Frets are finished nicely and the fretboard feels great. I am most impressed with the amp as I have 2 others the same size (more popular names) and this one sounds the best by far. Only issue I had was a slight adjustment of the string supports (for smaller strings on Strat style head). They were slightly misaligned but it took only seconds to fix. The strap isnt great (prefer leather ends), but used rubber strap blocks as a precaution. Overall, very happy and cannot believe the value offered for slightly over 100 bucks!Steve

Arrived safely, Tuned it up…Good. Truss rod adjust cover swings away for access. I did adjust mine a touch. Frets are polished..some..but ok .

I've played the Deering B6, and it's amazing, but this does the same job, and feels slightly more solid. I had been in the market for a Banjitar for some time, and after trying the Dean and several others at a lower price, I came upon a B-Stock here at MF. All of the others were a severe disappointment. I lucked out with a killer price of $300, all because a screw from the resonator was missing. I tightened the remaining 3 and it played perfectly. I plugged it in a fell in love. The sound is amazing, and the set up out of the box was spot-on. I didn't have to change a thing. The volume knob is smooth, and although you can change the position of the pick-up inside, I didn't have to. I rehearsed with it the following weekend, and it was nice to be just as loud as the rest of the band! If you are looking to get a banjitar, get this one. It's well worth the money (even at the regular price of $750). You won't be sorry. Everything about it is pro. No corner cutting on this one. I would by another at regular price tomorrow.Community User

When you are plugging in the input dangles and I noticed this when I plugged in the cable for the very first time ,otherwise it is not possible to twist it. I hope I need to put some glue to fix it In general the banjo sounds professional and good Thank you Serge123khrichenko

Excellent quality. It came with the frosted head, not the clear as advertised. This makes it a little more difficult to play without rubbing noise when playing but It can still work if you anchore at the wrist not at the two smaller fingers on the drum. I have written to the store twice to get the correct head size without taking it all apart as heads come in 1/16 sizes and 3 depths. They have tried to get me one from Remo but so far have not given me the size to order. I love the instrument and have played it at two different performances along with my 5 string. Just know it does not have a clear head. no effect on quality, just the way you play it.scottsharon1928

Sounds amazing and looks amazing too. For ~$500 you can't beat it. I think I would prefer for it to have guitar-style tuning machines, but the planetary tuning machines work quite well. They're just a little tricky to get used to.Josh

I bought this banjo a couple years ago as a placeholder until I could afford a professional model. But now that Ive saved up enough money, I have no desire to buy a new one. I love everything about it. Its beautiful to look at, its easy to play, its got great volume and tone, and its a little bit lighter than a professional banjo. Its made of mahogany, which gives it a warm, full tone. But then the rolled-brass tone ring gives it just enough of that bluegrass sparkle. I dont play on stage in a bluegrass group or anything, so I have no idea how it would hold up in that situation. But playing solos or duets with a guitar, it does just fine. It is definitely the best banjo you can buy in this price range. No comparison.mipete66

I've had the RK-R20 a couple of days now and cannot stop playing it! This is a excellent beginners banjo for the money. Build quality is great and the sound is surprisingly fantastic. I highly recommend the RK-R20.It's built just like the pre-war banjo's and has that old time vibe. Very nice headstock w/M.O.P.floral inlay.Fretboard inlay is not M.O.P. it is white acrylic like on the Gold Tones.Still very nice though. A really comfortable neck.Brass tone ring.One piece flange. What a brilliant guitar and superb value package! I have owned ‘real’ Gibsons over the years and bought this outfit as a birthday gift for my granddaughter who is learning to play. She has had a fender acoustic for a couple of years and now wants her own electric guitar. I chose this outfit as having previously owned one in the past I like Epiphone guitars. Before giving it to her I thought it best to check it over and set it up but there was nothing to do really, after tuning this guitar was perfectly playable right out the box! The feel, balance and weight is very like my Gibson and the sound is superb. The amp is excellent and packs enough punch to put a smile on your face too. She’s delighted with the built in tuner as well as the other essentials included in the outfit. What’s not to like? I can’t find a better value package!W O.

My original review still stands, but I made cosmetic-only upgrades for less than an average couple's meal at a casual restaurant that makes this look much, much more expensive. No tuner, pickup or pot swaps. Replaced black plastic parts with cream, added cream pickguard, replaced chrome tuner knobs with Klausen-style ivory-look knobs. Installed chrome pickup covers. Replaced speed knobs with gold top-hats.Easily done to make this look like a proper Les Paul. I'm happy with the looks for the little extra money spent.Steve

As the song says: "I'm a Sucker for a Cheap Guitar". I own over 30 – some cheap, some not so cheap. This one arrived perfectly set up: low action, no buzzing, no sharp fret edges, easy to play – amazing for a guitar in this price range. Although not great, the pickups even sounded acceptable. It's heavy, which to me means good, though not as heavy as my Gibson. It's OK-looking, but needed something to enhance it – a pickguard. I added one and it looks much better – more expensive. Instead of cutting off part of the guard to accommodate the knob as I've seen some others do, I drilled a hole big enough for the nut on the body underneath the knob to fit through the guard (see photos). Since the guard isn't much thicker than the nut, it allowed the guard to fit flush with the body and the knob to turn without any restriction of motion, and the pickguard is not butchered. It's a very clean look – like it came that way – not modified. So, I am pleased with this instrument, and would recommend it to anyone for any purpose: especially beginners to play or someone like me who just collects cheap guitars to hang on the wall of their studiio.Steve

I purchased a Mitchell MBJ200 Deluxe 5-String Banjo new this summer. I'm a newbie at banjo although I've been playing guitar for many years. It plays very easily and seems to hold its tuning extremely well. I know it's not a Gibson or a Deering but it didn't cost me an arm and a leg either. It looks expensive. I had a friend listen to me play it recently. The name on the headstock was obscured by my capo. Later he asked if it was a Gibson Master-tone. I would definitely recommend it to a friend.El Ronbo

My Washburn B16 banjo arrived ready to play right out of the case. Be advised this is a heavy banjo. The brass bell tone ring gives it plenty of heft. But that is also what gives it the sound. This is not a cheaply made instrument, it will probably outlast me. The B14 is the same as this B16, but without the inlays. The B17 is the same but with gold plated tuners and pot. I am just learning to play the banjo, and I felt that if I had a great sounding instrument it would give me more insensitive to want to learn to play it. There is an old saying, you get what you pay for. With this Washburn it is true. Do your homework on banjos and pick the right one for you. But you can't go wrong with either the B14, B16, or the B17. Pro or beginner. PS go buy a SNARK tuner. Best turner on the market for the money.Rkiser

Pickguard looks perloid in the picture and solid white is what I got. Upper neck has NO pickup selection. I know because I took it apart and all 3 upper pickups are wired directly to the output!! The knob in the middle, should be a blend pot that allows one to have one, both or adjust volume between the 2 necks. What the factory did was McGeyver a regular volume pot to try to do the same thing that kinda works, but not very well. 6 string neck on the on I recieved was very unstable! If you push one way or another, you can hear it go out of tune. 12 string neck is actually a little better, but the string break angle at the nut is ridiculous and pulls at the nut. I had to glue the nut in place (should have been done at the factory) to keep the strings in their proper place. Now I know at this price point for this type of guitar, you might have to put some work in, but some basic stuff should be ok from the jump and quality control sucks. I am a tinkerer and 40 year guitar player. So I know some things and know how to fix stuff. Good Luck if you get one of these that is playable out the box!!Rodd

This is one of the better double neck guitar as Ive bought for that price point, if not the best. Plays great and the neck is straight and true. I highly suggest it if youre in the market for a double neck guitar.timhi1572

I own a Recording King RK-R20 and love it! Well made instrument with solid hardware. The Dirty 30's Tenor was a disappointment. I was hoping for a descent, inexpensive tenor to play. When it arrived, the tuner screws were coming out of the headstock. Went to screw them in and the holes were all stripped out. I did the old toothpick trick in the holes to fix it but an instrument should not come out-of-the-box that way. Tuners are cheap and flimsy. Some of the lug screws were different from the others. I should have saved up and bought the RK-T36 model.j_rundown
