Best Mic For Classical Guitar (2024 Update)

This pair of small microphones give beautiful rich sound. I placed one near 12th fret and was rewarded with natural and clear harmonics. It seems no need to add any artificial reverbs. Great value if one needs to record acoustic guitar.Krzysztof

I wanted a pair of pencil condensers for the home studio; that I could use primarily for recording acoustic guitar, but that also sounded great in other applications as well. (overheads, room mics, etc.) On an acoustic as a pair these sound fantastic, the dry signal itself sounds practically record ready (Taking into consideration the instrument quality and room setup as well). There are probably "better" mics out there in this category, but not that I know of at this price, and in terms of sound quality alone maybe not by much. These NT5's absolutely blow away any lower end mics I've used (MXL, CAD) and as far as I can hear sound basically just as good as most higher end microphones that you'd spend twice as much on. (Go to Youtube and watch some Mic Shootout comparisons with these) I grabbed one of Rode's stereo bars for the pair which makes setting them up nicely convenient. (Couln't find this on musician's friend, GC, or Sweetwater though. Went to RODE's website and ordered separate.) A phenominal set of pencil condensers for the home studio recorder. At 0.5" capsules, they don't overkill high frequencies, but certainly don't lack in the bottom end either. I use these mostly recording acoustic & acoustic rock styles and the tonal balance is perfect in my opinion. Excellent clarity as room mics, haven't tried as kit overheads yet.Cully

I haven't had a chance yet to fully experience the microphone in any situation, but so far it's been pretty good. Definitely adjust the gain based on the distance it is from the source. Always keep it a little lower than you would usually like it because that will prevent it from clipping and you can always increase the volume in post production. I set up in my basement with it a few weeks ago and started messing around, have found nothing to be disliked. The overall sound is good, it has strong low end for my growls, and it doesn't have any problems with recording at any volume. I even put it in front of my drumset to see if it'd pick up okay, which it did surprisingly well with. I haven't been doing vocals for very long, but from what I can tell it easily competes with mics twice the price. 10/10 would recommend, worth it. P.s. get a pop filter toothe wheat man

I have one first generation version, which lacks the headphone jack, and this is my 2nd of the newer generation. If using this in an application where you want a shock mount, be sure to buy the Audio Technica shock mount that is made for this exact form factor. I have both of mine on boom arms. I like the side address form factor and the ability to get cheap pop filters that are semi-cylindrical. Compared to the much more expensive gold standard Shure SM7B, this sounds a bit brighter and has a wider, flatter frequency response. That makes the AT2020 better suited for instrumentals and other sound sources, whereas the SM7B tends to be very specifically suited to voices. I own USB and XLR versions of this mic, and the integrated analog-to-digital conversation seems very good, not introducing detectable noise.Matthew

I've used these mics now on a few sessions and found that the sound quality is excellent on both acoustic guitar and for drums. It has a very wide frequency response with great clear top ends, mids are fresh and and the bottom end goes on forever and stays clear the whole way down. We've also recorded some other percussion including triangle and bongos which I didn't think would sound that good based on their position but it come through extremely clear. Cymbals sounds fantastic! I want to also mention that the filters are a great feature and come in very handy. Again, these have only been used a few times but I haven't been able to stump these yet. These are great and I would recommend getting a pair of them, I've captured some phenomenal sounding tracks so far with mine.Brandon G

An ultimate aspirational mic for me. I have compared this with a vintage u87. For vocals, the vintage U 87 has a slightly more noticeable presence. By presence, I mean that you feel like the microphone is a noctilux-level macro lens focusing in on the singer's articulation and bringing them up close to your ear. All that, but it doesn't sound like it's trying. The new U 87 Ai is almost the same as the old U 87, but a bit more neutral. Less emphasis of sounds like ch (as in, chess), and the specs say less noise. That's my two cents, at least! The U 87 Ai is an amazing sounding mic and lives up to its name. I'd agree with so many reviewers who say that it's just plain good on anything.Peter

It was one of two mics (the other being the AKG 414, mentioned above) that I have seen in literally every professional studio I have ever walked into. To say it is a recording industry standard is quite the understatement. Let's talk cost: yes, it costs more than many others. In the world of professional microphones, it's actually on the cheaper end of the spectrum when compared with tube microphones, and it costs many times less than vintage originals. But is it expensive? NO, IT IS NOT. Expensive is a relative term, and refers to the amount of money an item costs… relative to what it is. When what it is happens to be one of the most meticulously built, most heavily copied, and highest performing microphones out there (that is in the estimation of the top-tier professionals in the business, not Joe Equipment-reviewer on your local forum) , the cost is reasonable, and as mentioned, low in comparison to others in its peer group. And how does it sound? Clear and honest. If you sound bad or ameteurish, you will get a very clear rendition of a bad and ametuerish sound. Don't blame the mic. If you put great sound into it, you get incredibly great sound out, and you can hear every nuance. In testing at home, it was sometimes shocking how much more revealing the U87 was. I can only compare it to my experience with any other top of the line equipment. It just keeps surprising you with "oh yeah" moments. Ultimately, nothing is for everyone. These little mics are inconspicuous and sensitive enough to pickup sounds well. Obviously not as sensitive as large diaphragm mics they are still crisp. Being small they are less intimidating and obstructing than large mics. Being lightweight they work well on boom arms. I have used them (as a stereo pair) inside a piano on a long boom.Edward B.

These Rode M5 compact microphones are way more than awesome!! They are not what I expected but they were much much more. I just received them last week and have already used them on a filming job of a choir. When I did a run thru very first time with the choir last Thursday I had my headphones on just making the necessary audio adjustments and my other videographer on camera #2 looked at me from across the room where he was running his camera and said Looks like you are happy about something!! I bet it's those new Rode mics!! Never seen you with a smile like that in a long time!!! I just gave him a thumbs up and was totally way overwhelmed. The sound is what I would expect from a $2,000 plus microphone. Anyway, this is a MUST BUY and you probably better buy quickly from B&H because the pricing on this won't stay this cheap for long.Gary

However, I found them invredibly tinny sounding and not at all warm like many users have described them to be. I was not horribly surprised by this, as you really just can't get a good pair of "matched" mics at that price point. My biggest complaint was these mics are definitely not matched. There was a rather large (3 dB) difference in volume. This is the only bad review I've ever left for anything.Curtis

I recently installed a stereo pair of these mics on a grand piano for recording purposes. I was absolutely blown away by the quality of sound they delivered. The KM184 makes the recording sound like I am sitting in the same room as the piano. It has a very smooth response across the entire spectrum, and with the right placement you can achieve the perfect balance to make a piano sound better than you ever could have imagined, with crisp tone and no discernible hammer noise at all. This Pair of Neumann KM184 arrived well-protected in a well-made wooden box that is handy to carry around, with all their attachments included. I'd kept a vintage pair of km84s in an old sunglasses case in my drawer.. finally decided to give them a proper home. This box was designed for 2 km184s, but my pair of 84s fit fine. The foam cut is a tiny bit too short length wise, but they still squeeze in there just fine. Unfortunately I keep my clips fitted with quick releases, which prevents them from fitting in their designated slots.. I prefer AKG SA60 clips for km84s, which fit perfectly with room for the badge, and are almost $50 cheaper than the neumann clips intended for 184s, and they also are also more rugged. The Neumann wn110 windscreen doesn't quite fit in the windscreen slot without being squished, so ultimately I'm only storing the mics in here, which seems a little wasteful, but it still feels more secure to store the 84s in this box rather than a random drawer, so I'm glad I picked it up.Michael

I think for the price this is a decent mic. It gives a clearer sound then what I had in my arsenal for my acoustic guitar. I've not tried it on anything else, so I haven't had a need to use the pad. I was trying large condensers on the acoustic and they were too muffled. This comes across much cleaner, maybe a little on the bright side but that's better than muddled. I'm using it to mic at the fingerboard and it gives a better, cleaner and more full bodied sound. I would note it's a little sensitive to being bumped. I found if I bump it I have to readjust the connection to get rid of a bit of hum it seems to pick up after the bump.Z

I used this product on a number of things. Timbale,Drums Overheads,Acoustic Guitars,String Quartets, Vocal Choirs,Steel Drums and well as room mic's. It comes with a 20db pad which is very helpful when recording loud percussion like Timbale,Steel Drums, and loud Drums. Make sure you have a low noise pre amp and you get really good results. I only wish it came with omni capsules or at least had that option. These mic's are great for the money.Joseph

I was reluctant to believe that I could make any type of Splash using this microphone to do my first ever voice over gig, but honestly it was all I could afford at the time. It came out smelling like a rose! Of course at that price point you're not going to get anything close to a u87ai. And the noise floor in my opinion leaves quite a bit to be desired, but with the little bit of offset compression and some other tweaking, this mic can sound as good as anything Shure has on the market, or possibly even the sm58 for voiceover work.RB

Firstly it comes in a really nice wooden storage box, very classy presentation I must say. For the prices I can't believe the sheer quality and crystal clear signal processing it contains. I find myself barely having to push my EQ or compression as I would normally with one of my old mics which found better use at a pawn shop! I've only had it about 4 months now, and since then every artist I work with including my own songs have been worlds easier to mix and also sound worlds better. I highly recommend it for any engineer or producer on a budget and need a great input source for their craft to have it's best foot forward.EZ Duzzit

I am more than pleased with the Bluebird SL. The upward curve in frequency response exactly meets my needs (recording a wind instrument whose character lies hidden in the overtones). I can easily imagine voices or instruments that this mic is unsuitable for but if you find yourself boosting the 5khz-8khz with eq to achieve a certain presence, do yourself a favor and let this mic do it for you.Mitchell

I love how clear my Bluebird SLs are on everything I've tried them on. Vocals pop in mixes without being too edgy. There's so much headroom there that I need less preamp gain, making for a much cleaner sound. They also sound nice and clean in various positions on my Guild D25 acoustic… even right up on the sound hole without being boomy. I find Bluebirds are brilliant on hand percussion, as well. I liked my first Bluebird so much, I got a second one for stereo. A pair of Bluebirds made my relatively mellow 7' Steinway B cut through an ensemble mix in much more the way a Yamaha does, so bonus… two grands in one! (For solo piano, I'm preferring a pair of Blue's Baby Bottle SLs due to their additional low end.) All in all, Bluebirds are good for just about anything you want to feature in a track, especially if you're going for a modern sound.Moogman

If you are looking for a budget mic that is warm and tube like, this is it. I bought this because of reputation not because of the price. It is a fantastic mic. Nothing cheap sounding about it and I had no issues with self noise either. Used with a dbx 286s channel strip with a bit of compression and EQ going into my DAW. A clean preamp.. You can’t go wrong and it looks cheesely cool. Sounds above it’s price point. For the price you can’t beat it. By the way it is nicely made too. No worries there. Used on female vocals only. First, B&H got this here quickly even in these times, great job. I watched many online reviews of this before I bought it. The reviews I watched and read were correct, this microphone is amazing for the price. It has extremely little noise and sounds amazing for the price. It supposedly originally retailed for $200 and now is under $100. At that price it's a steal. I'm planning on doing home recordings of my wife and I singing some of my arrangements for fun. I want her to sound good (which she does) and this should bring out her true quality. This mic did not come with any accessories like some others do, so I have added a pop filter and shock mount which should take it to the next level. Other than that, I can't think of any negatives at this price point. Recommended.Robert

Love this. It has made practicing and just having fun portable and convenient. Exactly what I was looking for to replace having to hook up all the pedals, amps, find free power outlets and set up the space. I can sit on my porch and play along with songs using tonebridge and the included software is nice too. Really a small living environment game changer for someone who just loves to play. worked right out of the box and with your existing corded headphones. (I wish I could use my Bluetooth phones, but I'm sure there is a newer version with this option… The price is right, it's worth it. First of all I have to say that this thing works flawlessly for me. I love it and I'm slightly saddened by the fact that it doesn't have a perfect five star rating. There is ZERO (detectable) latency and the sound quality is as good and/or better than some interfaces that cost much more. But just to be clear, I do run it with an iPhone 13 Pro Max. I wouldn't really recommend running it with anything less. I also use Fl Studio Mobile as my DAW. This setup allows me to record guitar tracks anywhere. Something I've always been interested in. Think about that, recording great sounding guitar tracks anywhere. I can then easily transfer the tracks to Fl Studio on my home computer for further editing if needed. Anyway. The iRig HD 2 does exactly what I need it to do, every time. It's also made in Italy which is a nice little touch.Half

I used this to revive an acoustic/electric guitar that had lost its electronics due to capacitor failure. Could have tried installing new caps, but this rig was the less expensive and less effort solution. It also works, whereas the alternative had a lot of risk for failure, Putting a mic into the sound hole isn't a new idea, but having a product built especially for this purpose is, at least for me. I used mics designed for clipping to your collar before, which was clumsy and could damage the guitar finish. This product eliminates both problems. I also like that it takes standard AA batteries rather than the coin types and works with rechargeable NiMH. The sound from my amp is very true to the acoustic sound once I figured out what setting works the best. That took just a few minutes, since the preamp is easy to understand and adjust. However, the mic does pick up a lot of noise from touching the guitar, so I had to reduce the gain on my amp and have to be careful otherwise. That's just what happens when using mics rather than piezo bridge pickups. Those who slap their guitars for percussion will likely consider this a feature. I'm not very concerned about the wire from the mic to the preamp being too skinny. Like playing the guitar, I just have to be careful with it. It's easier to deal with than a stick-on transducer I've used with a cable that picked up every little knock on it. Plus you get a zippered clam storage box to protect the unit while in the gear bag, so whatever damage that might happen would be on stage while setting up/taking down and actually performing. At this price, having a spare is well within my budget.Boxman

I wanted a product to allow for amplification of my classical guitar. This was a simple and effective solution. It works well with my acoustic amplifier and with different acoustic preamp systems. Great sound. I play flamenco, and this pickup solve most problems I had with feedback and the lack of freedom (I used to put a mic in front of the guitar). Plus, is so simple to use, a simple guitar cable and you're in business. I'll buy another for the guitar that is in the making. And I'll buy another every time I make a new one. The only thing that it lacks is the percussive sounds, that are so common in flamenco, aren't great. I think it's because you have to dim the low frequencies, thus the percussion sounds (basseless)? Very easy to install. Sounds fantastic live and studio. Installed in Cordoba 55FCE Negra. The Fishman Problend system the 55FCE came with sounded adequate but not great. For recording, the Lyric blended with a Cascade ribbon mic, beautiful… Live, very feedback resistant. It's great to purchase a new piece of gear that does what the manufacturer says it will do.Kevin

Well, i will say you can get a little more volume out of this mic than the Shure 58, and for my voice cuts through the live mix a little better. However the mic does tend to be very sibilant so you have to be careful with the "s" word vocals. I dont really feel it worth the higher cost than other mics.RW65

This is a fantastic mic! I've had about 7 years live singing experience with a loud rock/metal band. During that time, I've used the standby SM58, Electrovoice's N/D 767, Sennheiser e835 wireless version, Shure's Beta 58a, and an Audix OM5. The AE6100 stands head and shoulders above each of these.Out of those I named, the only one that compares is the OM5. The rejection qualities are similar between the two, and the gain seemed to be similar. When I AB'd the OM5 and the 6100 at the local music shop, the 6100 seemed a bit more robust to me, too. I bought the OM5 first because it seemed to be more solidly built mic. Ironically, the problem I had with the OM5 was that the capsule broke on me after falling from a foot high coffee table!Make no mistake, the AE6100 has taken far more punishment than that already, and has had NO problems. This mic is a hypercardioid; feedback is a non-issue. Tell your sound guy that. He'll probably have his settings generically prepared for an SM58, and that will NOT make this mic work to it's full potential.The only live mic I'd want to look into after this one is a higher end condenser, like the AE5400, but I'm too much in love with the tight hypercardioid pattern on this baby to give it up yet.This mic won't let you down, bottom line.Zach-tzJm4

I've gone throught the "Shure" gambit with the SM58, and the Beta 58a, but then used the ATM27HEs and finally the AE4100, and have now settled on the AE6100. I'm using the Shures to mike accoustic guitars, but the ATM27HEs are for backup vocals and ocasional lead voice, but the AE6100s are for mainly lead vocals. If you know how to use a mike – half of your difficulties are solved, then the rest is your EQs and a soundman that has a clue… I have one of each of the shures mentioned, 10 of the ATN27HEs, and three of the AE6100. If I need more they will be the AE6100s.dayetonl

Really I can not explain or compare this mic with any high end audio analyzer that tell us how good or bad it is. In my case I just use it direct into Audacity on my laptop using a Zoom H4s as phantom power and audio interface true my USB connection. Easy, ok yes it is, just plug and play in this configuration. Nice sound, yes very good and real for my taste. I like to set the input mic levels a little low and get around a meter or less with my instruments and amplify the recording level to -4.5 dB to have an standard volume level and no distortion or clipping. This mic help me record even strong sound instruments like the violin without any problem this way. If you want to talk it just record your voice with a very nice natural sound. For the price this mic is a real nice purchase.mriutort

If you want to step up your snare recording go for this Microphone. It offer so much more than the SM57. Plus it’s great for Backing Vocals and gives you a natural separation in the EQ without compromising quality! I’d recommend it to anyone!Josh L.

Certain microphones fall into the pantheon of "go to mic" for certain purposes. This is one of those. For snare drum live and in the studio this is as important a tool and in the same class as the venerable 57 (you all know to what I refer). But wait there is more. It is small and easy to place. For snare drum this is to be seriously considered and it ain't to shabby on guitar cabinets. Beyerdynamic is also a very reputable and a legacy manufacturer so it is to be trusted for support. Versatile, clean warm sound. A deeper low end response compared to a Beta57, yet with a more detailed midrange which gives the impression of better high frequency extension. From now on it is my go-to for micing electric guitar cabs. Build quality top notch, feels very sturdy in your hand and although I havent owned it for long enough to put it through its paces I have read multiple reviews from engineers who have used it in drum applications and say it is built to last. Arrived, looks so nice and heavy, well presented, but strange harmonic sound after 5 minutes use then muffled recordings after that, so returned as faulty. This microphone is the gold standard for vocal recording, and I can't believe that I used anything else before now. What's the secret to the sauce? While besides the decades of experience backed by the Shure name, this microphone features a VERY defined cardioid pickup pattern. What's a cardioid? Why do I care? If you're asking these questions, I'll simplify it by saying this: if you're recording in a situation where you want the least amount of background noise, this is the pattern for you. Especially vocal recordings, podcasters, and the like, will enjoy the dynamic range that won't clip or cut out at loud sounds like you do with condenser microphones. The pickup range is not directional, but you do need to be conscious of distance, as I'm sure you'll find once you start using it. I did use this microphone plugged into an audio interface into my computer, so that may have introduced a tiny bit of noise, but I was blown away by the results I got from recording. This is nothing like the lower cost and less dedicated microphones I have used in the past. Very well made, as you would expect from a microphone at this price point, and the frequency response modes are set by sliders on the back of the mic. The mounting and cable connector are set up for a boom arm or a stand. Because of the integrated pop filter cover for this microphone I toyed with the idea of using it without a pop filter, but I think i'm just too "spitty" for that, so I've shifted to using one. Out of the box you'll notice the mic comes with only a few accessories (cover plate, large foam windscreen, thread adapter) and no XLR cable. But I was more impressed with the sound quality in a non-optimal, unfixed bedroom environment. The flat, wide-range frequency response is unmatched; there is zero feedback and no static interference whatsoever, even around several operating laptops, two external monitors, and numerous electronic devices. The included windscreen makes up-close vocals and whispers move without the pops and crackles of lesser microphones. Bottom line, this is the microphone that provides the professional performance you need to be taken seriously in any recording environment. The Shure SM7B cardioid Dynamic Vocal Microphone will be a fine choice until you’re so famous that you have your own professional studio with a production crew and your name on the building. Honestly, most people’s hearing and their listening equipment can’t hear any improvements as you advance beyond this level of studio mic. FEATURES: • The switches under a cover at the back end allow you to set up the dynamic response of the mic. Shifting curves give you a visual indication of what frequencies you are pushing or reducing. • Excellent sound reproduction. • Fits standard mic mounts. • The Cardioid sound pick-up pattern is very direction and ignores sounds coming from anywhere in the room except the front making it a VERY quiet mic for studio use. • Two Year Limited Warranty. Love this. It has made practicing and just having fun portable and convenient. Exactly what I was looking for to replace having to hook up all the pedals, amps, find free power outlets and set up the space. I can sit on my porch and play along with songs using tonebridge and the included software is nice too. Really a small living environment game changer for someone who just loves to play. worked right out of the box and with your existing corded headphones. (I wish I could use my Bluetooth phones, but I'm sure there is a newer version with this option… The price is right, it's worth it. I was on the fence for a year and kept coming back to buy after being frustrated with all the cords running around for my guitar rig. A lot of fun, wish I'd had it 20yrs ago.dogsplantsguitar

First of all I have to say that this thing works flawlessly for me. I love it and I'm slightly saddened by the fact that it doesn't have a perfect five star rating. There is ZERO (detectable) latency and the sound quality is as good and/or better than some interfaces that cost much more. But just to be clear, I do run it with an iPhone 13 Pro Max. I wouldn't really recommend running it with anything less. I also use Fl Studio Mobile as my DAW. This setup allows me to record guitar tracks anywhere. Something I've always been interested in. Think about that, recording great sounding guitar tracks anywhere. I can then easily transfer the tracks to Fl Studio on my home computer for further editing if needed. Anyway. The iRig HD 2 does exactly what I need it to do, every time. It's also made in Italy which is a nice little touch.Half

I used this to revive an acoustic/electric guitar that had lost its electronics due to capacitor failure. Could have tried installing new caps, but this rig was the less expensive and less effort solution. It also works, whereas the alternative had a lot of risk for failure, Putting a mic into the sound hole isn't a new idea, but having a product built especially for this purpose is, at least for me. I used mics designed for clipping to your collar before, which was clumsy and could damage the guitar finish. This product eliminates both problems. I also like that it takes standard AA batteries rather than the coin types and works with rechargeable NiMH. The sound from my amp is very true to the acoustic sound once I figured out what setting works the best. That took just a few minutes, since the preamp is easy to understand and adjust. However, the mic does pick up a lot of noise from touching the guitar, so I had to reduce the gain on my amp and have to be careful otherwise. That's just what happens when using mics rather than piezo bridge pickups. Those who slap their guitars for percussion will likely consider this a feature. I'm not very concerned about the wire from the mic to the preamp being too skinny. Like playing the guitar, I just have to be careful with it. It's easier to deal with than a stick-on transducer I've used with a cable that picked up every little knock on it. Plus you get a zippered clam storage box to protect the unit while in the gear bag, so whatever damage that might happen would be on stage while setting up/taking down and actually performing. At this price, having a spare is well within my budget.Boxman
