Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this jazz classic. the music on jazz guitar has travelled a long way since it's original recording. the first lp edition contained 10 of the 11 tunes originally taped, including 'this is always' while omitting 'too close for comfort'. however, the second lp edition had only nine tunes ('this is always' was omitted) and presented edited versions of many tracks (mainly editing out piano or bass solos). a later release of this music, transformed the trio into a quartet, dubbing a drums track by larry bunker over the original music. finally a 1988 cd reissue presented the original trio versions once again (in their edited form), adding 'too close for comfort' but again, omitting 'this is always'. this cd includes all of the tunes recorded on this session in their original unedited form for the first time including the long forgotten 'this is always', in it's original trio version and adding 'too close for comfort'. essential jazz classics. 2011.

The incredible wes montgomery of 1960 was more discernible and distinctive than the guitarist who would emerge a few years later as a pop stylist and precursor to george benson in the '70s. on this landmark recording, montgomery veered away from his home indianapolis-based organ combo with melvin rhyne, the california-based montgomery brothers band, and other studio sidemen he had been placed with briefly. off to new york city and a date with tommy flanagan's trio, montgomery seems in his post- to hard bop element, swinging fluently with purpose, drive, and vigor not heard in an electric guitarist since bop progenitor charlie christian. setting him apart from the rest, this recording established montgomery as the most formidable modern guitarist of the era, and eventually its most influential. there's some classic material here, including the cat-quick but perhaps a trifle anxious version of the sonny rollins bop evergreen "airegin," the famous repeated modal progressive and hard bop jam "four on six," and montgomery's immortal soul waltz "west coast blues," effortlessly rendered with its memorable melody and flowing, elegant chiffon-like lines. flanagan, at a time shortly after leaving his native detroit, is the perfect pianist for this session. he plays forcefully but never overtly so on the bop tracks, offering up his trademark delicacy on the laid-back "polka dots and moonbeams" and easy-as-pie "gone with the wind." with the dynamic philadelphia rhythm section of brothers percy heath on bass and drummer albert heath, they play a healthy latin beat on the choppy and dramatic melody of montgomery's original "mr. walker." montgomery is clearly talented beyond convention, consistently brilliant, and indeed incredible in the company of his sidemen, and this recording — an essential addition to every jazz guitarist fan's collection — put him on the map.

Ever have a friend who was brilliant, witty, encyclopedic in knowledge, galactic in interests, prone to hyperactivity and who, as a result, drove you nuts? if that friend was a guitarist and composer, he would be neil lamb. lambs new tunes for jazz guitar is, like an over-caffeinated genius on a full-tilt stream-of-conscious jag, all over the place in a way that is fascinating and maddening (although repeated listenings give a decided edge to fascinating). whether holding a guitar – the seven-string is his instrument of choice – or a pen, lamb takes chances. the first track is illustrative. down the mountain begins with a descending arpeggiated figure, suggesting a reflective, mood-setting opener. that figure, and the six that follow, soon accelerates out of control, as if gravity could take hold of notes. its a subtle warning that listeners should hold on to their hats for the 12 tunes that follow. theres a funky shuffle that threatens to break into a sprint. a couple of sweet, exquisitely voiced ballads that arent the least bit afraid of getting emotional. some electronics-driven free-form improvs. a big, acoustic-pounding folkie thing. rockabilly. road rage set to music. the atonal, arhythmic, amelodic itchy and scratchy, lamb says, is a soundtrack for a humorous and violent cartoon. given his studies in modern composition, he could just as well have said it was what would have happened had schoenberg played guitar and hung out with drummers and bass players. the drummer here is dave herzfeld; jim lydens on bass. theyre not given a lot to do on this record, but they know how to pick their spots and shine when opportunities arise. mark kleinhaut, another amazing maine-based guitarist, joins lamb for a duet in footsteps to freedom. bruce kyle for the bangor daily news. 06 /01/ 2002.
