Best Guitar Amp Mic For Live (2024 Update)

I bought to of these to run as a stereo pair for guitar amplifiers in a live environment. They are terrific! They handle whatever two 100 watt amps can throw at them and do not color the sound in any sort of negative manner. They definitely let the amps tone shine right through. I went from two classic Sm57s to these and I just notice more clarity and detail than I did with the 57s. Mic placement is a breeze. I spent all of 5 minutes with a pre-recorded loop figuring out the most natural sound and its very easy to find the large sweetspot with these mics. Again, the 57 does not have a huge sweet spot.Blakemore

Pros: Excellent sound quality. Have used it in front of a few different types of bands guitar amps and found it did a fine job whether they played the blues or rock. I have a Demeter Silent Speaker Iso Box that I have been using a 57 and a 58 in with semi-satisfying results. I built a second box to put the Demeter in to even further cut down on the sound levels in my studio. I have taken the door off of the Demeter to let it breath and it takes away all the boxiness of the sound. The only thing missing was this mic! It sounds so much better I can't even believe it! It's so much more balanced and it has smoothed out the mids that have a tendency to build up in a small space like this. Blending the 58 in brings back a little of the "mid scoop" present in the 906. The super cardioid polar pattern of this mic is perfect for this application. From clean to crunch to distortion, my iso rig now sounds like a mic'd up cab in a dead room. All of my stomp boxes and guitars are now in play as they sound like real guitars and not mid range and nasally toys. I am blown away! Buy this mic and follow this recipe if you want an iso box to sound like an isolation room. I'm sure it sounds great in a room as well but the iso box is a more critical situation that only this mic works in. Buy it!radguitars

This microphone is fantastic for recording vocals. It picks up everything in the room clearly including the air conditioner. This is no problem as the mic has a built in filter that can get rid of the noise from the air conditioner. The included manual has a description for all of the different pickup patterns and their uses. The manual also says the C414 XLII is recommended for vocals, whereas the C414 XLS is recommended for overheads.Jared

To me, this microphone appears to have a pleasing, slightly reduced proximity effect, in that vocals bass tone is not unduly exaggerated or muddy when singing very close to the microphone (e.g. approximately 50 mm from the mesh). Based on the research I did, for my personal taste, this appears to be an improvement on a Shure SM58 microphone. The manual states that this Sennheiser E835 requires phantom power. In view of its excellent performance, this is not an issue and I am using it with a TC Helicon VoicelivePlay which from memory provides 48v phantom power. I looked up and down everywhere to see what's the best mic for all around, Like the hidden gem in the cornfield. People told me the rodemic, Razer and snow xlr mic, But from looking past the "Normal" I seen the sm57. A famous hidden mic no one really knew about, Basically has the same tone sm7b just a little different. $100ish instead of $400 count me in, I been using it for zoom calls, Twitch, Discord and everyone i talked to said i went from a very noisy and outland voice to a solid nice tone. I personally use mine with a boom arm, the a81ws, focusrite. No issues with it and i had it for about 3 months, I'm not the gentlest on it either so I feel comfortable using it on a day to day basis. I've only had chance to do a quick sound check miking my Bugera V22 and recording the sound using my new Tascam DP-008 EX 8-track recorder. Sound quality was very good, especially for a basic home office recording setup. I can see why this mic is so popular in the industry. For perspective, I am a hobbyist and don't perform, but like to have the best sound for my limited budget to make recordings for myself and maybe friends and family. the most amazing lightweight personal amp I've ever owned. It has a microphone input too. The power and big sound from this is almost unbelievable. I can't turn up the master volume past 3 in a practice studio, so lots of grunt left for outdoor settings. Wish I'd bought this earlier. And sooooo amazingly lightFerenc M.

I bought the Vox VX 50 AG, to use as a practice amp at home. I've been more than satisfied with it's tone and volume. It's a nice compact body size, and is easy to move around because of the low weight and sturdy carrying handle. The controls are easily accessible on top, and have a quality feel to them. Overall, a very good amp that I would purchase again, and recommend to others!Gary

I took a chance on this mic. I didnt want to spend a lot of money for a spare mic. This mic has the feel, weight, and quality of more expensive mics I have. It has good sound. While Ill continue to use my more expensive mics because of their more nuanced sound, this mic will do the job and get you through the gig.blustrt

As an owner of both the Fender Acoustic 200 and the TC Helicon Voicelive Play Acoustic, I can tell you that this unit sounds better, avoids the unnecessary clutter of using a traditional acoustic amp with a footpedal, and is everything you could ask for in terms of an acoustic singer-songwriter set up. On the vocal side: the harmonies are spot on, sound super authentic and non-robotic, and the reverb and effects are superb. On the guitar side: seriously enhances the sound of your acoustic instrument and the effects and reverb are top notch. Couldn't be more enthusiastic about this amp!! Buy it!!!Osage

I have a Fishman SA220, and a Bose L1, with subwoofer and Tonematch. I can tell you this amplifier is a lot of fun. I've never really fooled with loopers and harmonies. This makes it simple, even for an old man. This is on par with the other systems I have. Only it seems crisper to my ears. Plenty of power, great tone, and effects I'll actually use. Not sure about longevity yet, only time will tell. So far I love it.Mark

This thing is not only loud but the high and low ends sound so damn good. Especially if your signal is "all analog". No doubt the amp is incredible, the tubes are huge! Speaker is really good. I gotta say tho it is missing the warmth that something like a deluxe reverb, but hey its nit-picking at this level. Last amp you will ever need if you're a Vox fan. If your a Fender fan, buy the Deluxe Reverb Or HotRod Deville. Of course AMS was on time, on the spot, and helpful as always. Thanks AMS!Nick (Phan)

hear this amp on youtube and figured i would give it a shop. i had no always liked vox amps but didn't like the weight of the ac30 or the thin sound of the ac15. as i got better and better at playing the guitar and also playing in the band i had gone through almost every amp out there. i was always disappointed with each and everyone. lately i bought and performed with the supro dual tone and fell in love with it. great cleans and pretty good distortion! i was surfing through youtube and came across the ac30 s1 and thought that is interesting, one speaker and lighter weight. what took vox so long to come up with that idea. so i bought it and couldn't wait to get it home and try it. i can honestly say that i have never been been blown away initially by any amp i have bought. well, that all changed today! what an amp! i was blown away at the clean tone with beautiful bottom end and when i turned the gain knob up, holy cow, pure distortion heaven! so easy to dial in any tone on the fly! i even tried some pedals in from of it and again it sounded great. but, honestly i think it sounds best when it stands alone! maybe when you use accent pedals, like delay or chorus, pedals like that it shines also. overall i can't praise it enough! buy on and you'll see!JR

I found this amp to be a welcomed addition to the Vox line up. As expected, I really liked the 1×12 format for its reduction in weight. The simplicity of the controls also was a welcomed featured. The only thing I didn't care for was the speaker choice. Having it for several months, I thought that after breaking it in it might improve, but I just don't feel this particular speaker is a good choice for this amp. With that said though, you could easily swap it out for something you prefer. I'd still recommend the amp!Jason B.

Overall: I ended up using this as the vocal mic on a project. The singer was more comfortable with the sound and response of this one versus some other options. This performed great and is clearly tuned for vocal use, tidying up some common shortcomings that can come across on some microphones. You wouldn't believe the vocals were recorded with this and an SM57 a few feet away. It sounded great and proved that this mic can compete with more pro choices in certain circumstances. I've used it for demos and field recordings and it did the trick there too. It's no replacement for "real" studio mics but it's great to have on hand for those moments where you need an extra, and it really does sound good. It honestly has no business sounding as good as it does. If you're considering this mic (it's ideal for a lot of nonstandard applications) it's worth getting.Russell

I have the 990/991 set, and the 990. Both came with stand mounts. Whether your giging, or just knocking out tracks in a buddies studio, you'll want these rigs. The 991 on a fixed stand in front of your accoustic, and the 990 dangling in your face comes out pure heaven on tracks. Crisp, clean, and as good as any $500+ I've been in front of. The cases protect them well. If you set in with your buddies band occasionally, bring these, your instrument, plus your mic stand, and everybody will be using your rig over the 54, 57s, or 58s up there. No kidding. They sound THAT much better. Use the shock mount and a pop screen for best results. One night I had to use electrical tape, and my cord box foam for a pop screen, and it worked great. I've had my stand kicked over, dented the screen a tiny bit, but it kept running like champ. How tough is it? 2 years of S. TX bars tough. So tough that after the first one took a HARD hit and kept running, that I bought another. Money well spent. Get one if you can. Needs phantom power, but if your boards, amps don't have it, you can get the mini amps, compressors that provide it. You won't regret getting one. I put a 54, 58, my 990, and a Peavey into our mixer/power amp, same settings, and this had the best clarity and volume. I'm going to buy a couple more before they go extinct at these prices.guitarasaweapon

Iv'e been recording professionally for over 30 years. I have worked with artist like Prince, Michael Jackson, Patti Labelle, Luther Vandross, DJ Quik, TLC, Tyrese, and the list goes on and on and on. Initially I purchased 8 of these mics to use to record a choir. I had a high end board so I figured I couldnt go wrong with them. BTW .. Marshall produces some pretty amazing high quality microphones. Do not be fooled by the price. An experienced engineer can get the best out of any equipment. But Marshall really does produce good microphones for an unbelievable low price. I was amazed at the performance of these little mics. Since then I have used them on everything from vocals, acoustic guitars, guitar amps, overheads for drums. One day a friend came in with his that he did a 3 dollar modification on. He simply changed out 3 capacitors and opened the head basket. We recorded his vocals and I was floored. We did a A/B with my Nuemann 103 running into a pair of Avalon M5s and again I was floored. I modded 4 of the 8 and they have been my go mics for several years now; and we have a mic locker most would kill over. Even with out the Mod you cant go wrong with these. Get a GOOD pre-amp and I guarantee you will NOT be disappointed. Am I saying that these mics are going to compete with a C12, Telefunken, Neumann that cost anywhere from 1500 – 13,000 …. Yes …… and NO! Just depends on the platform. If using a kick drum or overheads ..NO! Vocals …. yes/no (a tube mic will sound different). But then you have to ask yourself if the difference is worth 10,000 …. If I had one complaint about them is that the mids can be a little harsh with a lower end pre-amp. But even a 10k mic wont sound its best through a terrible pre-amps.Boogie Wonderland

Mediocre mic, the first and last Neumann mic I will buy. To start with there is a grounding hum problem with this, none of my other mics have this problem. I sent it back to Sennheiser, which costs me shipping and insurance in the $30 range, it came back 3 weeks later still having the same problem, which is a persistent hum when the lower body of mic is touched, not loud, but I can hear it in the recording, and again none of my other mics have this problem, I am using Mogami cable. Now onto the sound, it is nothing special, not an open sounding mic like my Audio Technica AE5400, a better mic for much cheaper I might add, the KMS 105 has no switch selection for bass cut or attenuation, so for $750 it is overpriced and under engineered.chuong

This microphone is one of the best suited for handling guitar amps and other louder close mic applications, especially where a low profile is advantageous, such as on stage or in a cramped studio setting. The mike can be hung/slung over a speaker cabinet or mounted on small footprint stand and placed directly in front of speaker cone/grill. The flat design allows for setup in extremely tight spaces. The frequency response of 40-18k works well on most amplified instruments. It is designed optimally to handle high sound pressure levels (loud) without pads. Response is fairly flat and even across the entire range. It is also super-cardroid pattern meaning crosstalk can be kept to a minimum, important when mic'ing multiple cabs. I found these to be superior to the standard sm-57 type mics for guitar cabinet pickup, more bottom end, crisper high end and very low profile. They are also fairly durable. I've been using mine for a long time and they have held up well.Steviebone

Works great as a guitar-amp mic. You can hang it over the top of the amp, or use something like the K&M 25950 (or 25900) stands. I'm not enamored with Sennheiser's mic clips, but they function; I'd be concerned about repeatedly attaching/removing mics from those clips. That could be unwarranted, but time will tell. Firstly it comes in a really nice wooden storage box, very classy presentation I must say. For the prices I can't believe the sheer quality and crystal clear signal processing it contains. I find myself barely having to push my EQ or compression as I would normally with one of my old mics which found better use at a pawn shop! I've only had it about 4 months now, and since then every artist I work with including my own songs have been worlds easier to mix and also sound worlds better. I am more than pleased with the Bluebird SL. The upward curve in frequency response exactly meets my needs (recording a wind instrument whose character lies hidden in the overtones). I can easily imagine voices or instruments that this mic is unsuitable for but if you find yourself boosting the 5khz-8khz with eq to achieve a certain presence, do yourself a favor and let this mic do it for you.Mitchell

I love how clear my Bluebird SLs are on everything I've tried them on. Vocals pop in mixes without being too edgy. There's so much headroom there that I need less preamp gain, making for a much cleaner sound. They also sound nice and clean in various positions on my Guild D25 acoustic… even right up on the sound hole without being boomy. I find Bluebirds are brilliant on hand percussion, as well. I liked my first Bluebird so much, I got a second one for stereo. A pair of Bluebirds made my relatively mellow 7' Steinway B cut through an ensemble mix in much more the way a Yamaha does, so bonus… two grands in one! (For solo piano, I'm preferring a pair of Blue's Baby Bottle SLs due to their additional low end.) All in all, Bluebirds are good for just about anything you want to feature in a track, especially if you're going for a modern sound.Moogman

It's not as full as my sm58 but for half the price, it's worth getting a few more. I use it for live streaming and karaoke. All 3 works great. You might need to get the pop shield to prevent the extra pops from some singers though. My friends are loving my set up with these and they're asking to get them set up with these mics as well. It's worth mentioning that you should get the switch version for these applications.Duan

I bought three for my rehearsal studio for Vocals. My opinion is for the price they can't be beat. Yes a 58 sounds a bit better with a little more mid range punch and a little smoother quality sound. But the deal I got for three brand new ones was excellent and can't beat the value. One of the gigs my band plays regularly the soundman absolutely loves my Mike's. I personally use a 58 and our lead singer uses a sure wireless mic but the other three guys are on my 48's and the sound man compliments them every time!!Dev the drummer

I read the reviews and recommendations on the legendary Sure SM58, but didn't really need to buy another mic. I have an AKG, an MXL and a Samson at home, and I work with the Sennheiser 421, EV RE-20 and Heil mics at work. But I saw the B & H price on this, and decided to give it a whirl. WOW.. seriously? Less than $35 for a mic of this quality? Unbelievably good deal! This little Sure SM48 sounds so good, crisp, clean.. blows the Heil and the EV RE-20 out of the water, even sounds better than the Sennheiser! I do a slight EQ contour to shift the bass energy a little lower, with a -1.5db dip @ 378Hz, and a 2db bump around 90 Hz, a little bump at 900 for presence.. and this sounds perfect every time! I don't have to wrestle with that bass tip-up that you always get with the condensers like the AKG and the MXL. For pure voice stuff, this one is a gem. I'll grab it first now before messing with the other mics.. this is a more direct line to getting a great result without the intermediate adjustment stops the other mics need. The RE-20 is retired now. I won't even use it with the SM48 to choose from. I use this for VO work, mostly with commercial spots at a major market radio station. Totally recommend this mic.
