Best Blues Guitar Lessons Dvd (2023 Update)

I'm one of those players that learned bits and pieces along the way and built up a style that while passable in many areas is sorely lacking in others, including some fundamental skills. I love the blues and wanted to become a more competent blues player- able to play different "bluesy" chords and riffs and improvised solos. This is a great DVD for building a basic foundation and working knowledge of that framework. You won't become a blues master from this DVD but it certainly starts you in the right direction and helps to form a basis from which you can develop and build on to. The lessons are clear and slow and easy to follow. The content is very well selected, thought-out and presented. If you learn everything in this DVD you will be well on your way AND if you already know something about playing guitar it will maybe help fill in some gaps or reinforce a few things. I give it four stars for good content and low price (value) but it misses the five-star mark for a few reasons: the very first lesson is about getting your "tone" which involves amp settings (fair enough) and "effects" you can use- which turns into a commercial for a specific effects manufaturer located somewhere in Germany. Several pedals with several settings each are demonstrated to show you how to get that "blues tone" that you apparently can't get with the amp alone- which is a nice amp for blues- no pedals needed. Curiously, no mention about the kind of guitar to use is made- guess they didn't get paid for that. Seems like the effects pedals for a begining blues player should be last thing considered given the basic nature of these lessons. But it is clearly about the money, and they at least don't try to hide that fact and they get it out of the way relatively quickly. Also, tabs are shown at the bottom of the screen as the instructor plays along- however, as the song progresses, each new measure is presented exactly as the first note of the new measure is played. This makes it hard to read ahead and anticipate the changes. Finaly, as the instructor demonstrates various chords, he demonstrates and plays D6 chord in a song even though he calls it a D7. Call me picky but a "pro" instructor should know his chords- or at least go back and overdub the corect chord name. These are the only reasons I didn't give it five stars. In all fairness I haven't totally completed the DVD so there may be other quirks- but over all for the price, this is a very good instructional DVD for anyone looking to dip into blues guitar playing.Skybiscuit

this DVD is amazing. It has play along tabs at the bottom of the page, still sheet music in bonus features, and you can play all 5 blues songs and the 2 solos and slow, medium, and fast paces. Worth every penny!Richard-RyB-0

This is a really well done course. If you're a beginner, check out Learn and Master Guitar, which is by the same instructor and is of the same high quality. This course is for an intermediate player, it's a bit challenging, but the quality of the material is fantastic. It's not just your garden variety video lessons on DVD, there are tracks to play with, a full-fledged instruction book to go with the video lessons, and the videos themselves are great. The instructor even brings professional players in to give you tips and show you new things. Great value, a valuable resource!Mark

I bought it because there were tabs that came with it – via the website. Once you jump through all the hoops to get them, there's no indication how! I have very politely contacted him several times over the last few months without an answer as to how I could get them. Yes, I've filled out the form twice – to receive the download link with NO results. As for the lesson itself? He provides insightful historical references, but the lessons lack the same enthusiasm – he's in a hurry by the time he gets there he's short on time. Doesn't discuss note character, nuance, spacing etc. – just HOW to play the fingerings not much of the rest. (Showing vs teaching.)The format does not work on any of the 4 computers I have, its just a movie. Two of them won't even play it. Maybe mine's defective? Who knows, they won't talk to me. On internet you use a progress bar with a mouse to pick and play repeat etc. This does NOT work with this DVD, its just for looks. You can only repeat it like a movie and sit there wait several minutes to get to the 15-20 second lesson – pure aggravation especially when You have to write your own tabs down and hope you get it the first time. Slow to rewind, if you skip back its gona be a long wait til you get to the spot you seek. I don't know, personally I'm confused. On the bright side, I do like the licks though as there are some good ones in there. Just not sure it's worth loosing precious practice time to get them out of it. Customer service leaves lots to be desired.Me

If you don't have the blues this book will teach you how to play them but because it's so wonderfully simple in its explanation you won't as a result get the bluesnadine.d

This is a great lesson plan for beginners. It is easy to understand, although I am not ready for my first concert yet, I am a lot better now than I was.barbie.s

Trower is on of the greatest overlooked guitarists of all time. He should be ranked right up there with SRV, Clapton, and Page. If you've never heard Bridge of Sighs, then you owe it to yourself to add that to your collection. This instructional DVD is fairly typical as far as Hot Licks type lessons go and I'm not usually really excited by learning just licks and tricks but this DVD has one really important difference, TROWER. That's right Trower, Trower, and more Trower. Robin does all the teaching and he does it pretty well. It's a great DVD for any level guitarist who wants to add some serious blues rock technique to their arsenal. There is not much talk about theory so the beginner won't be confused by abstract concepts but the theory is there in the technique for the intermediate and advanced players who will be able to recognize it when they see Robin play. Quite a few if not all the old Hot Licks VHS releases are now available on DVD. I think I have about a dozen of them and the Robin Trower release is the last one I bought. Arlen Roth, who is responsible for the Hot Licks series is in no way above the average home-video maker, so do not expect a visually, audially and dramaturgically professional product. As all Hot Licks videos this one has a disticnt amateurish air around it. Also Arlen has an annoying habit of showing up himself in his productions, talking and playing that adds little value. From an instructional point of view this DVD gives you a fair insight into Trower's playing style. From the video examples and the tab booklet, you should be able to pick up the essence of Robin's playing. New, compared to the original VHS release is a section of slowed down examples. If you're into the blusey, Hendrixy style that is Trowers hallmark, and do not have the ear to lift the stuff from the records, this DVD will be helpful, even though it is not exactly jam-packed with stuff. There is probably some instructional book and CD out there that contains more meat and potatoes. But here you get the stuff first hand from the man himself, and in both sound and vision. If you're a die hard Robin Trower fan, this one should be in your collection.matsdagerlind

I am a beginner guitar player and bought this hoping that it would help me learn rock guitar. While the concept is decent, the overall production quality and presentation was severely lacking. I would recommend looking at another title and forgetting about this one.goslin23
