Reviews:
These guitars are beautiful & well crafted instruments they just need a little more attention to set up & play ability before shipping. I love this guitar but for the life of me I can't seem to keep it in tune. this is a "Major Bummer" for a brand new guitar that I can't play. maybe if they upgraded the hardware & slightly raised the price we would all be happy campersStarrider
I had tried the different models of Variax at various guitar shops through the years but each time the modelling always sounded bad and, well, digital. I found a great deal on a JTV-59 and even though I had tried them before decided to give it another shot based mostly on my satisfaction with other Line 6 products. I must say that when I had the opportunity to try it at home and tweak some settings in my rig, the Variax modelling was actually pretty nice (some models better than others) and loads of fun to tinker with — especially after changing the strings to 9s. For some reason the JTV-59 just feels completely wrong with 10s. So far the biggest downsides are the bridge which is a real pain when it comes time to change strings (super annoying) and the fact that it is probably the ugliest guitar I have ever owned. It really does have the appearance of a cheap, overseas guitar. I do most of my own setup work so the fact that every Variax I've ever encountered has needed a setup badly was not as much of a deterrent to me as it might be for some. I don't find it to be the amazing, luthier-crafted instrument that they try to paint it as, but it's not bad now that the price more accurately reflects the quality.Ravn

Multiple different instruments in one guitar!!bearhead3
I have owned just about every variation of this guitar but this one beats them all. The ash body really resonates making this guitar feel better than any other Variax's I've owned. The translucent finish lets the ash bodies beauty shine. The electronics is the same as the imported units. The neck is quarter sawn and this adds to the resonance of the body, adds strength to the neck, and adds to the neck's beauty. The standard pickups also benefit from the body and neck. The finish quality is first rate.ae0tae0t

Very nice guitar. The single coil pickups that come with this guitar sound very good. I tried them for almost a whole set before I switched to the modeling. The modeling sounded better but, the be SC's worked very good. Nice feature is the bridge pup can be toned down with the tone control, wish Fender would pickup on this feature.
The tunings feature is also very handy and, does what is says perfectly with no glitches is sound. If you need to change the key of the song it's a snap to do. Very handy, ends bringing another guitar for special tuning.
I have an older model Variax (500) and it is a Great guitar but, when this model came out with the pup's and, the tuning options I wanted one.
Sweetwater gave me a Great deal and, I jumped on it, glad I did. Really enjoying this instrument. Almost has the feel of a Strat but, not quite. A little difficult to palm mute but, it definately can be done.
I am very satisfied with this guitar and, would recommend it to anyone looking for the options that I have mentioned in this review.Terry Hoffman

I have had a variax 500 since it was originally launched about 15 years ago. It's been my main guitar and gone through a few repairs but does exactly what I want. Was pining over the jtv for years but just that little bit out of my price range nowadays. The standard is a great value guitar without the variax side probably pacifica quality but I personally really don't need too much – as long as it plays clean and feels good then it's a guitar. I'll play it. The upgraded variax electronics are the deal breaker. I can now switch tunings separate to the model no need to store the tuning and fumble around trying to remember which tuning/model was saved in which position. Pair it with a helix and you can save custom tunings per helix patch without having to adjust the tuning profiles they give you as presets on the tuning dial. Giving literally 1000's of model and tuning possibilities without much hassle at all. (I believe – haven't fully tried this yet) I'm marking it down one star because I had few issues. I'm still not 100% sure it's fully right. Had an issue with the G string & piezo. The string sounded 'dead' and very quiet. I gave this a setup and it 'seems' to be sorted now but there's still a little niggle don't know if it's my brain playing tricks on me or I'm trying to pick a fault now. One other note is that you will need to charge the battery in order to do a firmware update – the included USB interface doesn't power the guitar. Since I'm using this with a helix IReviewed by Andertons Music Co.
Impressive Yamaha guitar for the price; they're always built well in my experience. It played well straight out of the box with all the expected strat features and tones. The Line 6 variax circuitry gives pretty good sounds for all the electric guitars. The acoustics need a bit more care – reduce the amplifier presence, etc – but again, good results can be achieved. I was very taken with the 12-string patches, both acoustic and electric. The Workbench software looks good too – so far I've only messed around with it; haven't had time to do anything serious with it yet. All in all, a very impressive package (though a gig bag or, preferably, a case would have been nice!)ador1441

Great all round, with exception of alternate tunings of some models. There can be artefact noises in some tunings. Beginners may not notice this as much. Or maybe guys that have hooked it up to a LIne 6 Helix which seems to massage the sounds (more bucks££ required ). Im more acoustic, so would say the best acoustic sound is the resonator. But would also say the magnetic pickups sound very good too on clean (non modelling setting) I mean really good.Reviewed by Andertons Music Co.
Overall: This is my third Line 6 Variax guitar. I started with a 300 series which was so so. I moved up to a James Tyler 69 which was a good guitar but we just didn't get along, especially the neck so we had to part ways.I have lots of Line 6 equipment with the Line 6 VDI Variax Digital Interface so for me another Variax was a given.I have always had a fondness for Yamaha guitars and since the Variax Standard is made by Yamaha I had to give it a shot and I'm glad I did. This my favorite Variax so far.Pair it with a Line 6 Helix or my favorite, the Firehawk FX pedal board and you have an amazing combination. Just one click on a preset on the board and you have a new authentic modeled amp with effects and it automatically switches the Variax to whatever guitar is chosen for that particular tone. It's simplicity and authenticity at its finest. As far as build quality the Variax standard is on par with Fender's Made In Mexico Standard Series instruments. It's not as good as American Strat, at least any of older models… I haven't tried a new MIA in some years. The tuners and bridge are stable, the magnetic pickups sound fantastic and are as good as any Stock Fender single coils, the body is alder and finished nicely. I like whatever material they chose for the ebony'ish fretboard, it looks and plays great. I love the black tusq nut and string guides. My only wish is that the neck wasn't plain sawn, they coulda upgraded a bit to a quarter sawn for a few bucks more. All in all and it's a great guitar and you really can't go wrong giving it a try.

Our son says it's fabulous!Reviewed by Andertons Music Co.
For me it is the ability to select different tunings on the fly. I play everything from Clapton, to Black Sabbath, Metallica, Alice In Chains, System of a down, Soundgarden, Slipknot so I need to be able to retune and the JTV-89F allows me to do that. This guitar is worth the money even without the Variax electronics. The humbuckers are high output, the neck is fast and you can feel the quality of this instrument. This is the finest guitar I have ever owned.MacMetal
This is the first stratocaster-style body guitar I've used. What drew my attention originally is the software re-tune and 24 frets. The variable tones are plentiful and comprehensive. Not sure if I'll ever get through them all. For the pedal board, good lord is there a lot of options. I thought learning Linux had a curve. Yeah… Every pedal effect you could ever want is in here, plus more amp models. I really didn't expect to win this auction, but I'm glad i did. I use this guitar about 2 hours every night with Rocksmith. I try to match the song tones from the game with what the pedal is putting out. Haven't tried the "bench" software yet to do further editing. Most of the pre-loaded tones are good enough for home practice. Still need to train my ear better to pick out lead tones 🙂timothyhale

Reviews:
There is plenty to like about this guitar, and I got it for the features I was looking for: locking tremelo, 24 frets, fast neck, 5 way pickup selector, and nice looks. My first impressions of the guitar was slight disappointment with how sloppy Ibanez was. The tops and bottoms of the frets needed to be beveled as they were pretty sharp, there was a noticeable nick on the fretboard, and there was a black smudge on the back of the neck. None of those was a huge deal. The main two issues I have with the guitar are that the middle pickup, the single coil, has such low output that the middle three positions are much quieter than the neck or bridge pickups alone. I do like the tone of the single coil in conjunction with the humbuckers, but those positions are somewhat useless considering how quiet they are, and I have ordered a humbucker to replace it. The single coil alone (middle position) has too much noise AND is too quiet. Not a big deal to replace a pickup, but why they are selling it this way, I'm not sure. The second issue is the volume control. Instead of a gradual swell, there is a sharp dropoff in volume at one point in the rotation of the dial, making it pretty much useless other than having it full on or all the way off. I am not sure if that is fixable, but if it is, I'll need to have that done as well. All that said, if the guitar had not arrived in such sloppy condition and the two problems were resolved, I'd give this guitar 5 stars.hickory spork
The Ibanez RG 450 or any of the RG's are with the exception of the factory p/u and electronic. capable of becoming one of the best performance guitars to own. The base Ibanez Floyd Rose system is fiddley but, after learning how to adjust/tune quickly becomes appreciated for holding tune no matter the severity of attacks you use with the tremolo. The Wizard(ll or lll ?) You would need to go to custom built to exceed the easy play and comfortable frets you will find on and RG. This recent RG450 I upgraded to equal the higher priced models by adding the De Marzio Tone Zone (B), Air Norton (N). And instead of going with the True Velvet. Added the Seymour Duncan Vintage Hot Stack for the middle position and added better electrics to even out the upgrades.. End result; This guitar plays and sound equal to guitars costing over $1,000.00!! Good bones! Yes this can be played well and many will find happiness with this as stock., and, will perform well against the competition dollar for dollar!ikeus
I used to own an '89 Ibanez VBK JEM that I regrettably sold to buy a gaming pc. I wanted to get a newer entry level RG so I could have a floyd,HSH superstrat in E standard. I've had this RG for long enough to know it's a keeper. This thing has the same feel and vibe of my old JEM! Minus the monkey grip and other features obviously. The neck feels fantastic and I only had to do very minor setup adjustments to my liking. I would have liked a rosewood or ebony fingerboard but of course this is the lower end model. The Jatoba feels good under the fingers, similar to rosewood but with a slightly lighter shade to it. Like most guitars you buy online mine came desperately needing some good oil and cleaning. The Jatoba fingerboard seems to require a bit more lubrication than rosewood. The neck binding is done well, not perfect but to a good standard. I do wish the trem was an Edge lo-pro… But again, this is the lower priced model. There is nothing wrong with the Edge tremolo, it stays in tune well with whammy bar abuse but it is one of the bulkier Original Floyd Rose style bridges. The stock Quantum pickups are among the best stock Ibanez pickups I've tried. They are hot but versatile. However I did swap them out with the classic Dimarzio Air Norton/Steves Special combo and a True Velvet middle. I do believe a higher end Ibanez will obviously sound better than this but for the price it really is hard to beat! Well done Ibanez and AMS!Nevin

Reviews:
Overall: I read some of these negative reviews and can't understand what they're talking about. This guitar is probably the best guitar for $200 I ever played , right out of the box it was setup perfectly. All I did was tune it , I've even got the same strings it came with. Which I normally change whenever I get a new guitar. The tuners are unbelievably tight , this guitar barely goes out of tune even if it has been sitting for weeks. Also I never attached the whammy bar , so I can't speak on that throwing it out of tune. Since I have over a dozen guitars I don't usually play it daily , but when I do it always makes me glad I purchased it. This is a very versatile guitar , I play mostly metal and this thing shreds. But I also play blues and it sounds just as good as my custom strat. I bought an Epiphone SG special in the same price range and let's just say the setup is night and day , the tuners absolutely sucked , "already replaced them" and the intonation was off. It was a mess , I've already put it on Craig's list and bought a G400 Pro instead , 10x better quality and setup , but I digress. I've got many high priced guitars but always go back to the GRX , the playability and neck feels so comfortable to play. The only thing I'm going to do eventually is throw in a Seymour Duncan humbucker and I'm definitely keeping this guitar. I don't know how Ibanez can sell this for $200 and keep the quality , but I'm certainly not going to complain. Whether you're a beginner or experienced this guitar delivers. Definitely will be purchasing another Ibanez down the road.Mike
There is a lot to say about this guitar. First of all, it's a great electric guitar for it's price range. I like the versatility it offers with 2 Humbuckers and 1 Lead pickup. So many tones are possible and with the whammy bar- even more. I'd watch using the tremolo system too much because the strings could go out of tune. I love to practice and create songs on mine. With the way the bridge is set up and the string-thru-body design, I am able to get the strings in tune in no time and the strings tend to stay in tune longer- even longer than my more expensive Jackson! The pickups give me a clear and great tone also. The only thing that I will change about the guitar is the strings…(I'd like to put on D'Addario's NYXL .09/.42) Looks like I'll be playing an Ibanez for a long time.Chaz
Sound: Does not have the cleanest sound due to the picks. Putting the right pedals and effects in line and cranking up the distortion makes it an awesome beginner / intermediate metal guitar. Features: For the price the materials feel great. Ease of Use: It sounds great on my Fender Champion 20 or Positive Grid Spark amp. Not the cleanest tone but a great metal sound and extremely easy to play. Quality: It feels made well, especially in the $200 range. I feel like this is one I'll have for years and once I get better definitely see this is a good platform for future mods. Value: This guitar is excellent value and at this price an amazing guitar. Manufacturer Support: I have not dealt with Ibanez. The Wow Factor: I must admit the aesthetic. It's extremely hard to find good looking purple color-based guitars. If I could dream up what I want a guitar to look like this is it. It helps that its quality is awesome. Overall: I love this guitar. Purple is my favorite color and a hard one to find good guitars in. It looks great. It feels great and I have yet to find any significant issues with it. No problems with the frets or fret buzz. Action is easy and low. It sounds great with my Positive Grid Spark amp. The pickups sound great. The HSH setup is very versatile. Not the greatest with clean tones like my Stratocaster, but amazing with the right effects.Josh

Reviews:
This guitar is a Swiss Army knife and REALLY works best with the helix (as though it was designed for it). If you are a traditional player with super expensive vintage gear this probably is not your thing. What makes it great is the ability to switch (and alter) any of the tones and tunings with "very" high (97/99 percent ) quality.Nicholas

I love this guitar, I use this instead of my other guitars now. When in a worship outreach team playing in various places 1 and 2 times a week you need a versital guitar and this does the job and it does the job very well. I didn't plan on using this as much as I do, now it has replaced the two electric other guitars I have. I do all my set ups and adjustments to my own liking and this thing comes with all thhe tools needed to do the job. Easy to do set up on too. Easy playing guitar.

The line6 Variax charger is only available retail at around 44 ($55) in the UK. The line6 Variax battery is only available retail at around 44 ($55) in the UK. (Some great maths there line6). So what do you do when that seemingly common occurrence of a none charging line6 Variax battery happens to you (judging by some other posts on the web it is a when not an if)? The answer is you buy this for 8 ($10). If you're lucky (like I was) you discover that the line6 charger is a complete piece of junk. It could have cost me 44 to replace the battery, then another 44 to replace the junk line6 official charger. So I spent 8 ($10) instead of 88 ($110). This charger completely charges the line6 Variax battery in a fraction of the time that the official charger that came with the guitar ever did. Even from new a complete recharge took 15 hours. This charger manages it from flat in around 5 hours. So even if it had been a dead line6 Variax battery, I would still end up with a better charger. I wish I had bought this a couple of years ago.slightly_mad_malc

Reviews:
Sound: If you own a XTL you can download it for free to use with your variax. This is the coolest….tone you can dial up to your taste. Features: I'm loving the alternate tunings….I play mostly acoustic stuff. Was playing with tuning the E and A strings an octave down and it's slick. Quality: Software…hmmm…well I guess the fit and finish are fine. You have to pay attention that you download all the drivers, latests software as they describe. Get a pad of paper and write it down. It all works, but setup is critical. Value: Well it cost me a Variax 500 and a Pod XT Live to get the workbench free. I figured having 28 guitars, all the effects, and the ability to do alternate tunings with a flip of a switch was worth $1000 or so. This is a great gigging rig. Tones of tone options. Manufacturer Support: I called them and they got me on track. The Wow Factor: You have to look at this as a "rig" and it's very slick. Overall: Really happy now that I can do the alternate tunings and other adjustments. The workbench makes this whole thing a really flexible solution. I worry it will lose it's mind on a gig…but so far so good. I've had my variax since spring of 2004 and the XT Live about 6 months…..now I can really see what it will do.
Sound: This product is amazing. My favorite guitar that I've made so far is a Jazzbox type body, with a Jazz P-90 humbucker in the bridge and then putting a single coil pickup in the middle between the two pickups. The result was an incredibly clear tone that the regular Jazz style guitars weren't putting out for me. The point is that you can do anything. what ever sound you really want, you can have. You just have to be willing to take the time and mess around with things. Features: Imagine it…you can take any of the guitars, and you can you can make them into what you want them to be. Try taking the Firebird and putting telecaster pickups on it… why? because you may get a tone that you really like. Honestly…I've created several guitars that I'm never going to use…they were just good ideas. But, on the other hand…I've made one guitar that I use consistantly because it sounds great. Ease of Use: It's easy. You pick the body, then pick the pickups, and that's it. It'll even let you listen to it as you change things. It's easy. Quality: if you're computer can handle it…it works. The cable that comes with the little box isn't stage ready, but it works great for the purpose it was made for. Value: of course we'd like things to be cheaper, but it will be worth as much as you put in. Overall: The other really great thing about the Workbench is that it will allow you to connect your guitar to Line 6 Monkey (their download helper) and you can actually update the Firmware in your guitar. After you do this…the 12 string models are going to come out a lot better, and some of the tracking models are going to get solved to. If you have a Variax, or are going to get one…this product should be considered just a part of the expense of the guitar. Good news is, if you have a PODxt Live or a Vetta II, you don't have to have this product, you just have to have the VDI/RJ-45 cable and you can download the software for free. It's worth it. I promise.
