Hartke Xl 4 Bass Guitar For Sale (2024 Update)

This bass is everything anyone could want. You can dial in consistent tones for Jazz, Rock, Blues; anything you can imagine. You're only limited by your amp and skill. Good for novices or pros, and priced for both of them. I play progressive rock/metal, jazz, classical, fusion, etc and the bass lends itself well to all these things. The hardware is solid: the tuners tight, the bridge stable, and the nut functions as prescribed. Some people have problems with the TEK bridge but I personally find it convenient. No cross-talk, easy stringing, reliable setup that DOESN'T BUDGE. The pickup/preamp complements the bass and its resonance qualities. Passive EMG HZ pickups with the mahogany body work together constructively. The bass and treble controls work well with amps, not adding much to the gain of the signal but still affecting the tone strikingly. The body and neck are well constructed and add a lot to the tone. Mahogany+maple+rosewood are the essential dream-team. Access up to the 24th fret is relatively easy. The satin finish allows more vibrations to transfer through the hardware and body. The quality craftsmanship is fairly decent. The fret ends are smooth and all the edges are clean. The factory setup is alright but I like my action low for easy playability. Overall, the bass is clean, simple, and contributes to any playing style well.ProgJazzMetalBassist

Overall: When I purchased this bass guitar, I did it on a whim based purely off how much I like the sound of Schecter 6 string guitars. I was prepared to be a little disappointed and make a trade in if necessary, but no, I pulled this baby out of the box and fell straight in love from the first ultra twangy acoustic note. A few hours tweaking my Fender Rumble amp (also courtesy of zZounds) and suddenly I had THE sound I had been chasing. The layout of the pot functions were confusing at best but Schecter released an online wiring diagram so a little research got me exactly what I needed; excellent customer support in that regard, but with the quality of this bass, I feel as if I'll never even need to contact customer support in order to give them a review on it! Everything from chunky 90's post-punk to soft jazz to slap bass in tha face to dad rock to death metal to orchestral, just turn a few knobs and this baby knocks it out of the park. Sounds great, very clear/crisp/gritty/etc without sacrificing any low end. This is amp very often marketed and talked about as being crisp and clear with lots of beautiful highs, but I would add I mainly play with flatwounds, and it doesn't leave anything to be desired in terms of body/resonance/fullness etc. Powerful enough to melt faces for small/mid size gigs at 3-4 volume. I'll never have to worry about distorting and pushing my amp to undesireable volumes to keep up with the rest of the band. If it's good enough for victor wooten it's good enough for you! First, Im not a musician or a bass player, so if you are looking for a musician kind of review stop reading. Im a sound contractor, and I bought this amp for backline. Why do I pick this amp? Well, the brand is one of the top notch brands around the world. It is still a heavy transformer amp (old kind), that will work with voltages of 95-140v without issues. As a backline this is important to me, You will never know where you will work or how good is the AC voltage at venues. Now digital amps that only weights a few pounds are class D, very efficient and clean sound but they are still vulnerable to voltage peaks due the fragile electronics inside. Dont get me wrong, they are hundreds of bass amps out there, and they could sound better than this old school one, but if you read reviews of users on forums and other sellers, there are almost not bad review of this amp. And other amps (not to mention brands) with class D and lightweight there are a lot of bad reviews that fails on venues (and Im guessing is because the irregular voltage). So I pick this amp because the reliability of it class. About the sound… I have not compared A/B with other comparable amp yet, but man!!! my SVT-810e really kicks hard and sounds unbelievable! I have heard tube amps rated at 400w, and this amp, with the mids (of the built in 3 band eq) almost at top, sounds pretty similar but with more much much punch. Most bass players have their pedals, so I did not need all the bells and whistles that other brands or model offers. Just the basic and ready to go. Hope to be useful for future buyers.Ricardo

I received the amp earlier than expected great shipping, packing was excellent, price was excellent . The amp has plenty of power and has really nice features. It has 300 rms watts which means you don't have to play it wide open to get the power. Its very light and very clean sounding. You can get dirty sound with the drive knob. Really cool. The compressor works really well so you don't need a pedal for that. This amp can be used for home practice or on stage and it will cut thru the mix. Very nice amp.jimis2kol4u

I am playing the TX300 through a Hartke HD210 HyDrive in my home studio. This class D amp is clean and quiet. The small cooling fan on the rear is temperature controlled so that it only comes on when needed and unless I'm behind the amp watching the fan, I never know that it is on. I like the compression control that evens out the sound level of lows and highs. And with the high frequency driver that is in the HD210 HyDrive, I can plug in my 6-string, crank up the drive control and get some serious lead sounds going. Being able to plug in headphones and not annoy the household is a big plus for me. Adding an effects send and return loop would make this little amp perfect.William

Overall: Needed a small bass practice amp. I've played through various other Hartkes and loved them all. Figured this would be a good bet, especially when a blem unit came up. Blem? Slight surface scratches on one of the chrome handle covers, the barest wisp of scratches. I put more scratches than that in 5 minutes of wiping drool off my new sonic joy. Yup, 15w of fairly tight sound at even small venue volume. Bass is bass-y. Mids are full. Highs are…high. Sounds pretty interesting with various non-bass guitars plugged in too. So for one amazing deal I scored a lightweight practice/work bass amp AND a decent.solid state backup guitar amp.Oh yeah…Raymond

This little amp has a lot of bang for your buck !! If you are looking for a great practice amp with enough power to wake up the neighbors when their dog won't stay off your lawn or completely silent so your wife and baby can sleep it'll do both from full blast to full blast with headphones this is the amp for you!!! The Squier Bronco Bass delivers exactly what I expected. It's a 30" scale bass with a body shaped like the Fender Mustang bass; it has a single pickup (I believe it's a strat pickup), is fairly light weight (mine weighs in a 7 pounds 10 ounces), and it's a fun little axe. It's also the lowest-priced bass by an actual musical instrument company. How do they keep the price down? One way is that this is the only bass I've owned that has no fingerboard. It doesn't affect anything, but the front of the neck IS the fingerboard. The hardware is okay quality. But here's the thing – it sounds decent, feels great, plays well. There's going to be a little luck of the draw in a lower priced instrument, but my tuners stay in tune, intonation was on, everything is good. There was a little too much neck relief, but that was easy to adjust. If you're realistic about your expectations, the Squier Bronco Bass is an awesome value, looks good, and it gets you playing. It's not going to sound like a Stingray or a Geddy Lee Jazz Bass, but it doesn't sound bad, either – I would do a show with one without worrying about it. I have other basses, but wanted to add an inexpensive short scale to my stable, and this bass was exactly what I wanted. I may upgrade the pickup later – I may not. For now, it falls between my 34" scale and 28.6" scale basses, and it's fun to play. I'm very happy with it.Pcake

I ended up using this bass for songs where long scale can be a bit difficult. My main bass is an imported '54 P Bass copy, Alder body and maple neck/fingerboard. It had to go into a local shop for some major nut repair, and I needed something to play around with. Off the rack, it was a pretty great bass for the price. The neck is very well crafted, no sharp fret edges like some imported instruments. It's an agathis body, so the tone can be kind of bland, but compared to older Squier Broncos, it seems that all of the bridge and neck contact one piece of wood on the multi-piece construction, so sustain isn't too bad. The bad: The tuners are pretty sorry and are an oddball size, which makes replacement with good tuners very difficult. My E and A tuners rattle some, but all four do hold tune pretty well for cheap tuners. Also, the stock pickup is a six-pole ceramic Strat pickup, so it can sound…odd when bending strings. The other bad is the bridge: although it intonates pretty well, two saddles can make proper intonation difficult to achieve along with proper radius. Also, the bridge mounting pattern is almost impossible to replace with another bridge–four hole lock-down and quick-release style bridges DO work, but the bridge is mounted a little too far forward, and intonation is almost always sharp on the upper end of the fingerboard. Gotoh 201's are also very difficult to adapt to fit. But for its price point, some of these cons are easily fixed. I have a Mojotone Alnico V lipstick Strat pickup in mine with CTS 500K pots. It sounds excellent–it fools some of my buddies about how cheap it is. This bass could probably also benefit from a bar retainer near the nut. It went from an around the house beater to a mainstay for certain songs.Isher

my dad, a professional and extremely experienced bass guitarist, bought me this for christmas last year, and i love it. this is the first bass i've ever picked up and it's easy to play, is well built, has a nice feel to it, etc. i highly recommend it for beginners. i play it in my school band class and it fits in very well with the rest of the instruments. however it can fall out of tune easily and the pickup isn't the best, but ultimately it's the most perfect beginner bassout there, especially for the low price, it's high qualityace

I've had this bass for almost two weeks now, maybe a bit more. I didn't give my feedback befor today, since I would've given it less than a one. However, I waited for a reason. The sound is great, and I don't mind the sound of the stock pickups. It looks great, but that's trivial to me compared to the sound. Now here's a problem that few have mentioned. While some said, it's playable right out of the box, IT ISN'T. I got the bass in a pretty bad condition. Meaning, the action was too high, and the pickups were too close to the strings. It was virtually unplayable, even though I convinced myself that I could play it; which I did. But the pain in my fingers was indescribable, I almost got depressed. I changed my strings a week later to SH77 flat wounds .50 (heavy and thick strings), which didn't help initially. So I tried adjusting the action myself, but still wasn't enough. A day later, I sent it to a professional for setup. Now that made all the difference. I'm in love now. The strings sound amazing, the bass plays amazing, the feel is amazing, …. in brief it's amazing. Bottom line, have it setup by a professional ( unless you are a professional technician), otherwise you'll struggle with this bass. Unfortunately, the agent at MF mentioned that it's playable right out of the box, and I was naive to believe it. Anyway, live and learn. Set it up, and you'll already to go. I purchased a Sterling sub series stingray5 a week earlier and really wasn't happy so I went to return it. While I was there I was trying out some of the usual fenders that are in stock and just wasn't feeling it. Then, I noticed this one. I played it for 5 minutes and couldn't stop. It had the most comfortable neck I've ever played. After comparing it to a couple more expensive p bass options, this one was still the clear winner. The design may not be typical fender, and it's almost reminiscent of an Ibanez or a Washburn, but the ergonomic are like no other. Trust me this guitar is worth a shot. The tone is warm and growly. If you could imagine mixing the bass tone of the red hot chili peppers and the pixies, this would be what it sounds like.Chris

I got this bass recently and have to say its my go to bass for everything. I have a few others like a Dean which is nice, but feels odd due to its weight balance. But the Aerodyne sits well and feels comfortable. I think the tone of it sounds really good. Bought this in store so I got to test it out, action isnt bad. I did some innotating which only the E string needed it. I'm sorta new to bass, but I been producing music for 10 years. But being a new bassist, it feels great. I do highly recommend this bass. I've played through both the Hartke 75 and 150 watt combo bass amps, and I really like both quite a lot. First of all, both are very user friendly, which for me is honestly important. They both have a great sound, and I like how you can adjust the tone by both dial and graphic eq…it was very easy to get a well-rounded tone on every bass I played through them. The main difference between the two is power, and therefore, in my opinion, purpose. The 150 not only pushes more air, but also has a built-in XLR direct out, making it a great live amp in higher volume settings. Plus it's on casters, making transport that much easier. The 75, while it has all the tone and attack of the 150, obviously can't go as loud, and doesn't have the direct output…so in my opinion this would be better suited as either a practice amp or a great live amp in lower volume settings. I bought the HD75 from Belfield Music just recently (I live in provincial Qld, and I tend to do all my gear shopping on the net, because my local music stores aren't strong on product range or service). I had done a fair bit of research on this one I already have an 80W bass amp, but had never been entirely happy with its output, and everything I read about Hartke suggested their amps would do the job. In short, I was not disappointed. This thing is everything I wanted, and more. Lots of tonal range (that 7-band EQ helps), and PUNCH galore. Everything from "dull thud" through to crisp-and-biting. I had wondered a little whether the 12" speaker would have enough output for me but, to be honest, it performs better than some 15's I've heard. It would seem that the hybrid paper/aluminium cone thing is more than just marketing hype(?). The box is a few kgs heavier than the similarly-sized amp I already have, but that extra weight shows up beautifully in the bottom end, and the HD75 is by far the best bass combo I've owned. Okay, a 75-watter is not going to knock a stadium down, but this box is more than adequate for small- to medium-sized venues (I play in a contemporary church band) I'm running it at Volume 3 (1-10 scale), and that's good and loud. In fact, I like this HD75 so much that I'm also buying a smaller Hartke (HD25) as a practice amp.z80al2014

This is an inexpensive little bass rig, but it sounds much bigger than I anticipated. In a 20×30 room, half max volume is too loud for most people – but even at 100% the amplification is remarkably clean, and the FX throughputs allow direct input into your DAW or pedals. Thick lows and bright highs, frequency response is quite dynamic. An easy to carry rig for practice and small venues, and I couldn't be happier.Ian

After the initial COVID lockdown I landed a gig where I had to have a 5 string bass. So like a red blooded American I took my cash down to the local GC store to buy a fender 5 string American jazz. There wasn't any. I looked for an Ibenez. There wasn't any. I looked for anything and we'll there wasn't any. As the date grew near for our first show, I happened in and they had this one. I was disappointed that this was all there was, but out of desperation, I bought it thinking I would trade it once something I wanted became available. It took me about two months and 10 gigs later when I realized I love this thing. 9 months in and I don't know how many dates later, I wouldn't want to live without it. It plays awesome after a quick and minor setup on the action. The tone is big on the bottom and the mids and highs are as shapable as you want. It is a dream to play and guess what, when I finally got to put my hands on the fender I wanted, I didn't want it anymore. This bass is very much like the high end Ibenez basses. Probably too much for Ibenez's liking actually. I run through a 800w mark bass head with a 2×10 cab and a 1×15 cab. It sounds incredible. The big thing for me is when I run through my amp using the direct out in bypass, it sounds amazing. It is like having a sans amp in the bass. The electrics are that good. I have gotten tons of compliments on the tone and questions about how I got it. I literally just plugged it in. Also I can play it all night and even though it is a five, I am less fatigued then when I play the four fender American jazz I already own. The string spacing and scale I believe is responsible for that. If you are serious about playing a 5 string, at any level, then this bass is one you should look at. I am not super crazy about the esthetics but I get a surprising amount of complements on it. So if that is your thing then rock on I guess. I am getting over the fact that I was a fender snob. Also I believe Jackso is made by fender sooo….Chris

My one only bass for the past 20 years has been a Ibanez SR405 (2001 year model). I feel like I've purchased a big upgrade with this Jackson X Series Spectra. In comparison to the Ibanez, the Jackson's neck is fatter, lower fret sizes are slightly wider and the string spacing is slightly wider. The playability is a lot smoother for my larger fingers/hands. The pickups and active EQ systems are powerful. Need to have some amp/di box control to contain the powerful output when in smaller venues. I use the passive pickup control when in smaller venues and small churches. I feel that what sets this apart from other basses I've tried is how great it sounds to play the d and g strings as well as going above the 12th fret. The stock strings (D'Addario) sound really pretty when playing the higher octaves. The Elixir strings I'm currently using give the B string a BIG SMOOTH THUMP. For those worried about setup out of the box, I live in high altitude. Setup post manufacturer is usually a must because of that. I have been able to get fairly low action without fret buzz after casually messing with adjustments.Zach

I'd been looking for an affordable but quality 4 string for a long time. I originally bought a Hofner but it was not up to par so my advisor suggested this Ibanez AFB200. I love the size and weight. The hollow body is great because you can jam unplugged if you want and it still projects. Plugged in sounds great too. Not for Metal or Heavy Rock but perfect for acoustic, funk, blues, country and just jamming. Pretty enough to have it sitting in the living room. Perfect purchase for me.TI Singer Dude

The Hartke bass cabinet is the best sounding bass cabinet ever. Crisp highs and low bottom end. Definitely will be getting a second cabinet.Jim

I bought my first four ten HEATKE cabinet in 1990, by 1998 my rig consisted of to 2 410s cabs and 2 to 15 cabs. So 21 years later I see in NMS I see the cab of cabs it is light it is tough it is clear as a bell and it is crunchy when it needs to be crunchy you can hear every one of my effects can Reverb, course to the compression unit. I have combined the 410HD unit to the 215 Hartke I still have. Using a Trace Elliot preamp and a Yamaha power amp pushing only 750 watts to each cabinet. Is the best cabinet I have ever heard!!! I bought this as a backup for my 2017 Schecter Stiletto Custom-4. 5 minutes after I unpacked it, the LTD GB-4 became my main instrument. It has a good, solid, heavy-but-not-too-heavy feel to it, and the neck profile encourages a little extra speed and precision that I didn't have before. I am a gigging musician in a metal/punk outfit, and the GB-4 has a nice, mean look and versatile sound that fits the style of music. This instrument was made in Indonesia, but appears to have been inspected twice (once overseas, and once in the USA) and was set up nicely – It even arrived in tune. If you like the styling and want a little extra quality, you can spend an additional grand on the ESP E-II, which is made in Japan, comes with a case, and probably has better tuning keys and other quality features. But for someone like me who just wants a solid, good-sounding, fast-necked bass to bang around at shows, this thing rules. Totally recommended for the price.Xon

Very good basic practice amp. 10” speaker has good sound. 3 band EQ is minimalist but provides decent tone adjustments. I had read other online reviews complaining about speaker hum, my amp doesn’t hum. It’s heavier than most others in its class but bang for the $ makes up for it.c

I bought this for a pratice amp. I really like the sound.. Gets loud for so small. It came on time and in excellent condition. Now I can pratice and not bother my wife and daughter. I play bass in my church's worship team band, and I'm very happy with the HD508 Combo. Most of the songs we play are Young Adult/Urban Contemporary, and the 508 handles them well. It sounds great and provides just the right amount of bottom for the room and stage. It's easy to transport, easy to use, and the built-in direct out makes hooking into the house a breeze. You might need more power for larger venues, but the 508 is perfect for most rooms. There's really nothing I don't like about it. Definitely get one!JAMES

I love this Combo. I used to play on a Hartke 410xlcabinet with a Lh3000 head, this has just as much sound, more clarity and is super light! It rolls around on the casters wonderfully and they don't make noise at high volumes. I'll never drag anything besides this HD508 anywhere ever again.Isaac

If you want a premium bass for a mid level price this is the one! I bought this because I play in a Pantera tribute and as we know Rex loved Spector and now I know why. This thing is beautiful solid and heavy constructed but well balanced. It feels like power in your hands. Excellent tone controls and a great feel, cannot recommend enough. My experience- The fit and finish is great. I didn’t have any setup issues as I’ve read here. Sounds great. Everything was set up perfectly even matched the fender setup guidelines I looked up. I didn’t have to do anything other than some lemon oil on the fretboard, and I run flats so I put new strings on. Really impressed with the bass. The necks the same as a jazz but medium scale. Rolling off the tones and bridge pickup volume I’m in Motown mode, or crank the jazz bridge and you can get close to Jaco tone. Very versatile bass. I will probably put a hi mass bridge on and I like the stacked knobs but they have some rough feeling spots when turning them, I’ll probably upgrade those at some point with fender parts. Happy with the purchase and definitely recommend the bass and AMS to anyone.Chris

Very happy with my purchase only regretting that I haven't bought it earlier! Straight out of box was perfect. Well set up and playable. Packaged very well every detail is on spot! Sound-amazing punchy heavy sound even too many options for me. Variety of the sound is up on you cause knobs are fantastic (tone, volume controls) Feel / external – looks fantastic and any time can change pickguard to upgrade. The body and the neck not too heavy just acceptable and the neck smooth very confortable to play. Overall 5 stars from me!Arpad K.

At the price, it's impossible to beat. The tuners and the bridge are better than I expected. Electronics work nicely, usable strings for a burn-in period. It needed less than 10 minutes to tune, adjust and intonate. The neck is unfinished, I'm going to seal it with tung oil and lightly scuff it with some steel wool. I'm already assuming the frets will have some high/low spots. Surprisingly, the fret ends are dressed nicely. I see people have complained about cutting their fretting hand on sharp fret edges. Not the case here but necks do shrink a tiny amount depending on climate and that shouldn't really be a valid complaint. It's easy to fix fret ends and at this price I would expect to do it. No pick guard so the patched area near the pickups can be seen if you look close enough. As I'll be putting in a pick guard eventually, it's no big deal. I did buy it as slightly scratched so that's it for the "issues". In short, I'm happy. It's also a fair bit lighter at the body than I expected. I don't see that as a bad thing.kfries-half

After a simple bridge adjustment and raising the pickups a tad this is a really functional bass to learn on. Sounds good, no fret buzz (outside of my poor playing). This electric double bass is really good. Also sounds like real double bass. My son likes it a lot. Easy to carry and easy to keep in his small room.Ratchapone

Been playing electric for 25 years. Decided to try and learn how to play an upright. Am very pleased with this bass. Seems to be built sterdy. Sounds great once dialed in. Pick up is really hot so I run it through my sansamp and it cleans it up pretty well. Only cons I really see are the hot pickup, and the case it comes with is just a tad too small. I've got it in right and the stand in, but it still pushes out the bottom a little. Will be getting a flight case for it. Recorded it at home through my computer, sounds great.Jon

First of all, I never expected to get an upright bass for Christmas. I've been playing electric bass for nearly 35 years, even graduated to the six string. I have been playing with the same classic rock band since 1985. I have a broken American Standard that I bought from a guy that bought it in 1941, The neck broke at the scroll when somebody stole it from him years ago at a New Year's Eve gig. He had it repaired, but the neck broke while I had it again. It was weak where it had been repaired before. Anyway, the Stagg bass plays like butter compared to the old one and it can be adjusted more to my height as well. The other bass, although I could play it, was a little too tall for me. The pickup is really hot in it. The other neat features it has is the line input for a CD player, mp3 player, etc, and a headphone jack for practicing. I never tried the input, but I did try the headphone jack. The volume doesn't have to be turned up to hear this thing well through the headphones.PC
