I am lovin' this guitar! This was the acoustic sound upgrade I was looking for from my Gibson J-45 Standard, and then some! The 1942 Banner J-45 and the Standard are really two different guitars in every way. The sound is wide and broad and deep and has everything a Standard lacks: the 1942 Banner sound is big, the Standard sound is small and not at all on the same level. The build quality on this guitar is exceptional (on par with Martins) and I appreciate the bone bridge, nut and pins. The thin finish really lets the top vibrate and you can see and appreciate the wood grain and wood color on the sides and neck. Less bling, more growl with this model. I could sell every other guitar I own and be content with this Gibson 1942 Banner J-45, and my Martin D-18 Authentic 1937. Both guitars are so very different, but the quality and depth of the sound is the same. They ring forever with layers of overtones. They really compliment each other and yet hold their own against each other. The sound is incredible on this Banner J-45, once the guitar starts to open up from regular playing. It has that big dry Mahogany sound. I am so excited to have this Gibson! I feel I have found my two forever guitars in this Gibson 1942 Banner and my Martin D-18 Authentic 1937. Many thanks to my Sales Engineer, Jake Barker, who counseled and advised me on upgrading to the 1942 Banner J-45 from the Standard – and all the other conversations and help along the way too. I have become a believer in the torrefied Adirondack top and bracing making a difference in regards to sound. Maybe it is just the sound quality of the pre-war models that floors me. The neck is thick with a comfortable rounded C shape. If you can afford it, buy it, it's worth it! Minuses: Not a fan of the tuners, I find them cheap looking from the back – but they hold tune. The "period correct case" is OK, but the latches are small and thin and don't inspire confidence; the standard modern case is better with the big locking latches.
Love the J-45 but also have historically owned Rosewood guitars so this combination was a perfect fit for me. It's got a big full sound, good lows, nice highs. The onboard pickup is better than I expected and when played through an acoustic amp, the low end and fullness of the sound was insanely good. The guitar has a beautiful finish and some nice added touches above the standard J-45. You can't go wrong with a J-45 regardless but if you want something a little different from the standard in terms of sound and looks, I would take a serious look at this one. I couldn't be happier with this one.Randall K
I really wanted an electric J-45. The G 45 seemed to fit the bill. I've owned many Gibsons since the 70's, including a '63 J45 adjustable bridge and a '64 L5 CES. But they've gotten so expensive that new ones are basically out of my reach. I know Gibson fit, finish and quality and I have to say this guitar falls a little short, even at a grand. I own several acoustic electrics that I use as gigging workhorses. I ran across 3 major issues with the G45 Studio. The G string tuning key responded poorly and required nearly 1/2 a turn in either direction to change string pitch. The offset bridge for high E and B strings raised a flag for me since all my other acoustic electrics have a straight bridge. I could not get the guitar to be reasonably tuned no matter how many cents I tried to compensate either way. If I played an E it would be in, then a D, the D would be noticeably out. I am very experienced in compromised tuning, but it was irreconcilable with this guitar. Lastly, the sound. When I plugged the guitar in to the P.A. there was barely any sound coming out. My other acoustics are consistent in volume when plugged in. I loosened the strings, lifted the bridge and found small pieces of wood left that had pinched and left dents in the pickup wire compromising the contact of pressure of the bridge downward. So the sound was uneven,even after I blew out the wood chips. I would consider buying the guitar again if I could test play it through an amplifier before purchasing, but I won't pay full price for a demonstrator model that has already been played by numerous people and the guitar stores I have visited had no new ones out of the box. The included case makes this a steal. But with the quality control for this model you take a chance. I played the guitar for approximately 30 hours before returning.Rikenrocker

I have dreamed of owning a Gibson Acoustic, Specifically this shape. Unfortunately, this guitar was such a letdown. Was not comfortable to play and it literally sounded like someone slapped strings on a plastic lunchbox. I hate writing a negative review about a company I have put on a pedestal but feel obligated to pass on my experience with this guitar. I returned this guitar and purchased the Alvarez Masterworks 12 fret round shoulder and am in love with it.
I went to the Atlanta GC looking to buy a new acoustic, with an eye on the G-45. They had two in stock and both were consistent to each other. Playability was great, but both sounded very, very boxy. I compared with Martins and Taylor's in the same price range, and the G-45 just sounded like a toy guitar in comparison. I kept going back to the G-45s hoping one would win me over, but they just sounded cheap. I wound up buying a Taylor over the G-45. And that surprised me. I've always been a huge fan of Gibson. I own a J-45 and a Songwriter, and these Generation guitars just don't measure up to what I expect from Gibson.Ryan

I love this guitar, but I got mine for a killer price, so… I probably like it 5x better than had I paid full price. I'm marking it not a good value because the new prices are ridiculous. But I am extremely happy with the price I got it for. Plays great, sounds great, looks great. It's got that awesome vintage vibe but has excellent playability all the way up and down the neck. Great for strumming and fingerstyle, and least for anything I want to do with it. The mic on the LR Baggs Anthem blender doesn't get much use because it feeds back. Run it through a Fishman Aura Spectrum DI, and you will love it.martin_gibson
Overall: Ordering an acoustic without being able to play and hear it first is pretty scary. After watching numerous comparison videos, I landed on the Southern Jumbo. I am thrilled to say I am absolutely blown away by this guitar. The fit and finish is flawless, and is drop dead gorgeous in person. Most importantly though is that it’s easily the best sounding acoustic I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing. The sound is lush, rich and complex, with dynamic range for days. The neck feels pretty similar to a slim taper on a 60s Les Paul. It’s got enough girth to grip, but is still easy to move around. I can’t recommend this guitar enough.
This is a unique Gibson. With the Rosewood sides and back and long scale it sounds a bit like my Martin HD-28. This guitar though, with the Rosewood bridge seems to have a little more clarity and punch. Unlike short scale Gibsons this guitar has a nice tight sound. Fit and finish is really good. I was nervous ordering a guitar I hadn't put my hands on however I am quite pleased with my new guitar. The only regret I have was not purchasing the live version. I was tempted to return it and grab the live one but since receiving this one, I have been playing it at least 3-4 hours every day and it just feels too good to part with. I kept the original strings on for the first week and a half. It sang nicely right out of the box, aside from it being a tad out of tune (which was expected and easily fixed). I did put some Elixir strings on (Phosphor Bronze w NANOWEB Coating) however I didn't like the sound it produced and ended up replacing that with a new set of Ernie Ball strings (Medium Light Earthwood Phosphor Bronze) and it sounds amazing now. 10/10 This guitar was just going to be a place holder until I purchased a Taylor GS Mini-e Koa (I'm still learning guitar, so that was going to be a "when I get good" present to myself) but at this point, it's no longer a goal. The look, feel and sound of the Oliver Jr makes me want to play and keeps me playing.Drew B.
..So it's been two weeks now since I received my new Oliver Jr Mahogany Live from Orangewood Guitars. I wanted to spend some time getting acquainted with it before I just fired off my opinions of it fresh out of the box. I am an old guy who has been playing/performing for decades but retired from live gigging in 2015 and pretty much just put away all of my "stuff." However, as a guitar player, I have always admired acoustic fingerstyle players and now have decided I want to try tackling that style more seriously. I thought the best way to start this journey would be on a 3/4 size shorter scale or "parlor" size guitar which I've always thought were pretty cool anyway, and on a model that wasn't going to break the bank..ie., I didn't want to spend more than three hundred bucks! So I researched several guitars in the size and price range I wanted and found the old saying "you get what you pay for" to be very much alive and well. After trying the Yamaha F Series offerings, the Fender C-100, the Gretsch Jim Dandy, an Ibanez PN12E, an Epiphone, and some others.. I didn't like any of them! So it looked like I was just gonna have to drop big bucks on a Taylor or a Martin or something like that in that price range to get any satisfaction. Before doing that though, I decided to take a chance on the Oliver Jr. Mahogany, of which I had seen several reviews on You Tube, etc., etc. I figured if I didn't like it I could send it back. Well, guess what? I'm keeping it! It looks great, I love the size, it sounds very good for a small guitar, even better than I thought it would, and after a tweak or two of the truss rod it plays great. Of course the Ernie Ball "medium light" strings were killing my fingers for the first week or so but I decided to leave them on to see I could get used to them which I eventually did and they seem fine now. I'll probably go to a lighter gauge when the time comes but for now I'm just gonna stick with the factory issue strings which Orangewood recommends. So while the Orangewood is not a Martin, Taylor, Zager, etc.,in my opinion, you cannot get a better value at a great price on a quality instrument than this Oliver Jr provides. I have taught guitar for 15 years to students of all ages. This guitar has revolutionized how younger players can get up and running very quickly due to the amazing playability, solid tuning, and wonderful sound of this instrument. If you are a parent thinking of. getting your child started on guitar this is hands down the best quality for the price point. Too many times I have had parents spend money on instruments that look good, but are cheaply made, tough to play, and never hold tune….which only frustrated the student as well as myself. I only recently came across this company and directed two of my students to purchase this guitar and they are now up and running faster than any of my other students. Even barre chords are.a breeze. When I first opened the box what I saw was a work of art, I only hoped it was as great as it looked. I pushed the power button on the G-Foece Tuners and the G string light up red, I picked the G and all ways in tune. I checked it with my Petersen Strobe Tuner, and yes it was spot on. I plugged into a Vox AC30 HW, the notes that came out of the speakers seem to bloom with harmonics I've never heard before. The fit and finish looked like someone went through the Les Paul with a fine tooth comb, I figured the Les Paul being a 2016 would need a set of fresh strings. The instruction for the G-Force Tuners states to do one string at a time, so the G-Force would not need to be recalibrate. So I set up the windup wind down menu on the G-Force unwound the low E. The rewind confused me a bit, usually i cut the string about 1 1/2 past the next tuner, not so with the G-Force only cut the string to the next tuner inline, too much string will cause the G-Force to lock up due to too many winds on the post. When you get to the G-B-E Strings 1 1/2 will work better so the Strings don't slip on the post and cause tuning issues. The 490R & 498T pickups really surprised me. The 490R is very articulate not muddy in any way, if fact I use it more that I've ever used a neck pickup…the middle position is great for Lead or Rhythm, I've heard Jimmy Page uses this position a lot now I understand why. The 498T is very hot 13.7 ohms as opposed to the 7.6 ohms neck. Even though the ohms are far apart they work well together. I set my Neck volume about 6 for a nice clean rhythm sound and the bridge I set at 8-9 so when I want that little more bark it's there. I just bought a nice Candy Apple Deluxe Fender Strat a while back to upgrade to a REAL guitar, so a Les Paul was next on my list of guitars to get…someday down the road. Went to GC and traded in my bass to upgrade to a new one. On the wall I saw this deep cobalt blue Les Paul for under 2K. After 2 weeks I could not resist, said YOLO and ordered it online for store pickup. A wonderful instrument and offers a much different sound in contrast with the Strat, no regrets. I often just stare at it because it is a work of art, looks so nice next to my new strat and bass 🙂Anthony
While I still feel that the lower-end Epiphone Les Paul's (I had a Special II as my first electric) are great for the money, I decided to move up to my first actual Gibson Les Paul. The weight relief is what immediately caught my attention and I find this guitar a lot more comfortable to play. I'm also blown away by how much sustain it has over my previous Epiphone not to mention the overall finish and the ability to split the humbuckers. I went for the Cherry Burst but it wasn't easy to choose as the Midnight in Manhattan (blue) looked just as beautiful.Lloyd

I had been looking to get back into the guitar after a long hiatus. I didn't want to jump in the deep end with something expensive at the start, but still wanted something decent to play with, after some research decided upon the CC-60S. The guitar does exactly what all the reviews say it does for beginner learning. It feels comfortable, sounds great and isn't as tough when navigating the frets with chords and notes. PMT delivered the CC quickly, was securely packaged and I've found no defects. Would recommend anyone thinking of learning the guitar to purchase this from PMT.John O.
My guitar does not have any obvious defects in it's construction, which is more then I can say for some other guitars around this price point. The lightweight strings it came with make it easy to play for an acoustic. Sounds pretty good to me. Even smells nice, faintly like cut hardwood.SEAN
I like this guitar very much. It sounds beautiful, it looks beautiful and it plays well. The action on the guitar was a bit too high(0.012" on the 1st E string above the 12th fret). I had to adjust a truss rod a little anyway(instructions are provided with a tool included). It lowered the action a little(to 0.010"). Still not enough, so I will have to remove some saddle with sanding paper-a simple task, down to 0.007"-0.008". Eventually I want to replace a saddle, nut and pins with a natural bone and a new set of phosphor bronze strings, which will notably improve the sound…I can barely wait. A cost of these parts is affordable and well worth it for this beautiful guitar. For somebody who is new to these tasks, there are videos on You Tube that show you how to do all that correctly and it's a fun challenge. TWO TIPS: 1) There is a plastic film cover over the sound hole. It will leave some adhesive around the sound hole, when you remove it. Don't get frustrated by it. It gets easily removed by using Naphtha-a safe dissolver used by professionals, that won't damage guitar's finish, if used correctly-sparingly on a piece of cloth. 2) A pickguard is covered with a transparent film. I haven't played in a few years but the pandemic had me searching for something to get my mind off working crazy hours. There would be few guitars I'd buy sight unseen but I rolled the dice because I'd played Martin's first backpacking incarnation and was familiar with their quality. This little guitar wouldn't disappoint! It is a smaller scale but my fingers fit on the fret board and it's easy to just leave out and pick up when you need it. The sound is really good for the size and it's easy to strum or pick. It was exactly what I was looking for but a little more. I honestly didn't expect to be this happy with how much guitar I got for the price. If you need something to stick by the desk or play by the fire, this is a good optionBob
it arrived yesterday to romania, from music store germany (thanks for handling it with so much care!) and i laid my hands for the first time on this loveable tiny beauty. it looks amazing and feels amazing, in every aspect. excellent playability all thourghout the neck, right out of the box… i wanted a travel buddy — small, sturdy, light and playable… and here she is. there are a lot reviews on the net, i will let here my own subjective opinion, after one day of having it (shipped from music store, germany). – i'm a tall guy (6 feet 3 / 190 cm), but the smallness of martin lx1 is not a hindrance in playing. my wife is a mongolian petite, so perhaps I'm used with handling small beauties 🙂 – i have big hands, but not thick fingers. if i stretch my fingers i can cover this guitar's neck from the net to the 10th fret (from pinky to thumb stretched out) — so you can have a clue; however, i feel comfortable playing all over the neck, even past the 14th fret. so no problem with that… and the transition back and forth to my normal-sized acoustic fender pm1 or to my electric squier affinity tele feels smooth, adjusting in no time. – the guitar is neck heavy, but it doesn't bother me at all; you see, it sits comfortably in my lap. – well, of course, the sound is not of a normal-sized guitar — one has to live with that. it is somehow a boxy sound, but martin has a lot of character, so i'm quite pleased with the sound. the guitar seems to suit better for fingerpicking or strumming with bare fingers; when i use my pick it's too noisy, especially the d string is sooo loud, taking over the other strings. in know, it's a new guitar, freshly out of its box, so perhaps it needs time to shape its sound. if this will not happen (due to hpl back and sides) i will still be pleased, the sound is good enough and i can work my way around. – the machine heads are of excellent quality (like every aspect of this guitar, actually): i tuned the guitar yesterday, after taking it out of the box, then forgot about it… summing up: craftmanship — state of the art sound — boxy, you may like it or not (martin has character, a distinct voice, above all) optic — beautiful as it gets, simply perfect price/performance — well, i would have loved to pay less… in the states, it was 399 USD until recently, now it's more expensive and perhaps the price will rise as well in the current covid situation; so buy know, don't postpone if you consider having one.
I played a friend's dreadnaught sized Martin and fell in love. I already owned two other guitars at the time (Samick and a Fender Redondo Player acoustic) and I didn't want to spend the money in a Martin at this time. This happened to pop up as a stupid deal of the day and so I bought. I wasn't sure about the laminate at first, but it feels and plays like a well made guitar. It sounds bright and it is a tone I enjoy hearing. If someone had given me advice as a new player I would have wished they told me about this guitar. It is concert size so it is a little smaller than a dreadnaught. It is easier for me to practice barring chords and doesn't feel as awkward on my body as my dreadnaught. I love both guitars, but I definitely still use this one as I advance as a player. I noodle on it when I am watching tv, take it when I go way for the weekend, and bring it to play for my friends. I am lovin' this guitar! This was the acoustic sound upgrade I was looking for from my Gibson J-45 Standard, and then some! The 1942 Banner J-45 and the Standard are really two different guitars in every way. The sound is wide and broad and deep and has everything a Standard lacks: the 1942 Banner sound is big, the Standard sound is small and not at all on the same level. The build quality on this guitar is exceptional (on par with Martins) and I appreciate the bone bridge, nut and pins. The thin finish really lets the top vibrate and you can see and appreciate the wood grain and wood color on the sides and neck. Less bling, more growl with this model. I could sell every other guitar I own and be content with this Gibson 1942 Banner J-45, and my Martin D-18 Authentic 1937. Both guitars are so very different, but the quality and depth of the sound is the same. They ring forever with layers of overtones. They really compliment each other and yet hold their own against each other. The sound is incredible on this Banner J-45, once the guitar starts to open up from regular playing. It has that big dry Mahogany sound. I am so excited to have this Gibson! I feel I have found my two forever guitars in this Gibson 1942 Banner and my Martin D-18 Authentic 1937. Many thanks to my Sales Engineer, Jake Barker, who counseled and advised me on upgrading to the 1942 Banner J-45 from the Standard – and all the other conversations and help along the way too. I have become a believer in the torrefied Adirondack top and bracing making a difference in regards to sound. Maybe it is just the sound quality of the pre-war models that floors me. The neck is thick with a comfortable rounded C shape. If you can afford it, buy it, it's worth it! Minuses: Not a fan of the tuners, I find them cheap looking from the back – but they hold tune. The "period correct case" is OK, but the latches are small and thin and don't inspire confidence; the standard modern case is better with the big locking latches.
Love the J-45 but also have historically owned Rosewood guitars so this combination was a perfect fit for me. It's got a big full sound, good lows, nice highs. The onboard pickup is better than I expected and when played through an acoustic amp, the low end and fullness of the sound was insanely good. The guitar has a beautiful finish and some nice added touches above the standard J-45. You can't go wrong with a J-45 regardless but if you want something a little different from the standard in terms of sound and looks, I would take a serious look at this one. I really wanted an electric J-45. The G 45 seemed to fit the bill. I've owned many Gibsons since the 70's, including a '63 J45 adjustable bridge and a '64 L5 CES. But they've gotten so expensive that new ones are basically out of my reach. I know Gibson fit, finish and quality and I have to say this guitar falls a little short, even at a grand. I own several acoustic electrics that I use as gigging workhorses. I ran across 3 major issues with the G45 Studio. The G string tuning key responded poorly and required nearly 1/2 a turn in either direction to change string pitch. The offset bridge for high E and B strings raised a flag for me since all my other acoustic electrics have a straight bridge. I could not get the guitar to be reasonably tuned no matter how many cents I tried to compensate either way. If I played an E it would be in, then a D, the D would be noticeably out. I am very experienced in compromised tuning, but it was irreconcilable with this guitar. Lastly, the sound. When I plugged the guitar in to the P.A. there was barely any sound coming out. My other acoustics are consistent in volume when plugged in. I loosened the strings, lifted the bridge and found small pieces of wood left that had pinched and left dents in the pickup wire compromising the contact of pressure of the bridge downward. So the sound was uneven,even after I blew out the wood chips. I would consider buying the guitar again if I could test play it through an amplifier before purchasing, but I won't pay full price for a demonstrator model that has already been played by numerous people and the guitar stores I have visited had no new ones out of the box. The included case makes this a steal. But with the quality control for this model you take a chance. I played the guitar for approximately 30 hours before returning.Rikenrocker

Once I let the guitar acclimate to my home, this guitar sounded phenomenal. It's a solid warm tone, across the strings and up the fret. mine didn't need a setup it was perfect out of the box. I didn't adjust anything, though I did change the strings. The case is OK, but the sound from my Fender is so warm and sweet and it not flat at all, I couldn't put it down for the first couple weeks, the action was easy, and the neck was great, I actually sold my Eastman as It was IMO inferior to my Fender and forced to re-evaluate my collection. I might add bone pins just to see if it enhances the highs a little but no changes needed out of the case. I love this guitar.Charles
I purchased this Guitar as part of Andertons Black Friday Deal. It even comes with a Case! First Impressions of this items were incredibly Positive. The neck feels very slim and comes in a satin finish which is my preferred feel. The Action on my model came set up reasonably low to medium for my tastes. As primarily a Single Cut Electric Guitar player i felt immedeately at home. Due to its small size it doesn't have a very pronounced low end but it still has a very full sound, albeit much brighter than a traditional dreadnought western guitar. The built in electronics include a Tuner and Fishman pickup. I so far only tried the pickups with my electric guitar amp which naturally colours the tone but it still sounded quite nice on a squaky clean setting.Reviewed by Andertons Music Co.
A. I sent it back. B. They could have had a winner, but they just didn't. Why? the neck is sized for children who's parents aren't likely to spend this much for what was supposed to be a traveller for the general population. The design was pretty cool but they really didn't do it any favors with the lackluster matte milky satin finish, and I like satin finishes a lot, just not this one and not on this guitar. The top is super thin so it was very resonant, but still very thin a marginally voiced. Lot of sustain though, not well balanced at all. I guess to put it in perspective, I've played numerous mini guitars all a fraction the cost of this model and they were all around more pleasing and had tone to eat this one alive. They all had the same nut width, but you could play them and happily, that was not so for me with this one, was very cramped and like holding a small flattened pipe. Lots of buzzing, very low saddle but still medium (higher than ideal action) all that is code for "poor neck angle". Was glad to see this one go and wait for the right mini guitar. wish the guitar was as good as the case. I really wanted to like this one, but didn't really like anything about it but the sustain and purfling.th

Girlfriend bought me a Seagull Entourage Rustic for my birthday and I loved the sound and build quality of the instrument. I've since purchased several for family members and friends as as first instrument or a "step-up". Every site said the S6 was the perfect starter…meh! Only problem with the Entourage Rustic was the nut width made finger picking a chore. I decided to purchase an S6. Playing it in store…rusty strings and all…I could tell it was perfect for my purpose. It has enough space between the strings to allow my fingers to pluck away. I'm finally getting it to the point where the top is aging and the sound is becoming resonant, harmonically rich, and almost three-dimensional. The Entourage Rustic is a great Strummer but mine is now my permanent DADGAD guitar. I tuned it down a whole step (CGCFGC… right?) and have put the capo on the second fret. This allows me a heavier set of strings and the spacing at the second fret is wide enough for my fingers. Just pulled my 30 yr old Seagull S6 out of its case for the first time in couple of years. It's not too pretty–the area around the soundhole is shredded from years of hard strumming, and the top is cracked in a couple spots from not being properly humidified and sitting in hot cars. Plenty of other acne from carelessness. So now for the good part. This guitar plays and sounds like a dream. I could hardly believe my ears!! For an inexpensive guitar this is an absolute jewel and I'm glad we are reunited. It's going to spend far less time in the case from now on.
I had a teacher who owned the old S6 model and I always loved the feel and sound of that guitar, it stuck in my head for years. I couldn't ever find one locally and I used to not trust buying guitars sight unseen online, until recently. I got a few less expensive instruments to test it out and was impressed w/ how perfect they showed up ready to play and matching the reviews in every regard, even the flaws. So I waited for the right coupon and bought the new and improved version of the dream guitar I always wanted and I'm so glad I waited and ended up w/ the new one because it's even better! The look is outstanding, mine is just like every picture you can find of one they are all perfect and uniform in appearance, some natural woods will have a lot of variance in grain and color, these all look the exact same. The sound is heavenly, this is where I feel this guitar beats it's predecessor and many other fine instruments like Taylors, Yamahas, and some Martins I've played. It has a very rich full tone and a shimmering quality to it's sustain that makes me think it just creates more natural harmonics and resonance than any other acoustic guitar I've ever played. I've been playing just over 15 years and have fooled around w/ at least 20-25 different acoustic guitars alone, I own 4 others aside from this one- and none of those can compare to this sound of this guitar. It can almost run you out of a small room if you're playing hard it projects so loud, and the resonance/sustain is unbelievable- as long as you can hold a note fretted it will keep ringing, when it starts to fade add vibrato and the sound comes back like it's hooked up to a amp w/ a lot of feedback. The most excellent tone and string spacing I've ever found for finger picking. It's just the right sound for an acoustic lead part w/ melodies and Travis picking because it's highs are higher than others. It feels perfect too w/ the semi gloss finish and that contoured neck, best acoustic guitar ever for the $.John

I am lovin' this guitar! This was the acoustic sound upgrade I was looking for from my Gibson J-45 Standard, and then some! The 1942 Banner J-45 and the Standard are really two different guitars in every way. The sound is wide and broad and deep and has everything a Standard lacks: the 1942 Banner sound is big, the Standard sound is small and not at all on the same level. The build quality on this guitar is exceptional (on par with Martins) and I appreciate the bone bridge, nut and pins. The thin finish really lets the top vibrate and you can see and appreciate the wood grain and wood color on the sides and neck. Less bling, more growl with this model. I could sell every other guitar I own and be content with this Gibson 1942 Banner J-45, and my Martin D-18 Authentic 1937. Both guitars are so very different, but the quality and depth of the sound is the same. They ring forever with layers of overtones. They really compliment each other and yet hold their own against each other. The sound is incredible on this Banner J-45, once the guitar starts to open up from regular playing. It has that big dry Mahogany sound. I am so excited to have this Gibson! I feel I have found my two forever guitars in this Gibson 1942 Banner and my Martin D-18 Authentic 1937. Many thanks to my Sales Engineer, Jake Barker, who counseled and advised me on upgrading to the 1942 Banner J-45 from the Standard – and all the other conversations and help along the way too. I have become a believer in the torrefied Adirondack top and bracing making a difference in regards to sound. Maybe it is just the sound quality of the pre-war models that floors me. The neck is thick with a comfortable rounded C shape. If you can afford it, buy it, it's worth it! Minuses: Not a fan of the tuners, I find them cheap looking from the back – but they hold tune. The "period correct case" is OK, but the latches are small and thin and don't inspire confidence; the standard modern case is better with the big locking latches.
Love the J-45 but also have historically owned Rosewood guitars so this combination was a perfect fit for me. It's got a big full sound, good lows, nice highs. The onboard pickup is better than I expected and when played through an acoustic amp, the low end and fullness of the sound was insanely good. The guitar has a beautiful finish and some nice added touches above the standard J-45. You can't go wrong with a J-45 regardless but if you want something a little different from the standard in terms of sound and looks, I would take a serious look at this one. I really wanted an electric J-45. The G 45 seemed to fit the bill. I've owned many Gibsons since the 70's, including a '63 J45 adjustable bridge and a '64 L5 CES. But they've gotten so expensive that new ones are basically out of my reach. I know Gibson fit, finish and quality and I have to say this guitar falls a little short, even at a grand. I own several acoustic electrics that I use as gigging workhorses. I ran across 3 major issues with the G45 Studio. The G string tuning key responded poorly and required nearly 1/2 a turn in either direction to change string pitch. The offset bridge for high E and B strings raised a flag for me since all my other acoustic electrics have a straight bridge. I could not get the guitar to be reasonably tuned no matter how many cents I tried to compensate either way. If I played an E it would be in, then a D, the D would be noticeably out. I am very experienced in compromised tuning, but it was irreconcilable with this guitar. Lastly, the sound. When I plugged the guitar in to the P.A. there was barely any sound coming out. My other acoustics are consistent in volume when plugged in. I loosened the strings, lifted the bridge and found small pieces of wood left that had pinched and left dents in the pickup wire compromising the contact of pressure of the bridge downward. So the sound was uneven,even after I blew out the wood chips. I would consider buying the guitar again if I could test play it through an amplifier before purchasing, but I won't pay full price for a demonstrator model that has already been played by numerous people and the guitar stores I have visited had no new ones out of the box. The included case makes this a steal. But with the quality control for this model you take a chance. I played the guitar for approximately 30 hours before returning.Rikenrocker

This is a well made, nice sounding guitar. Lefty instruments aren't as prolific as righties in general and more esoteric styles like 12-strings are even less likely to be in a shop. Having an inexpensive yet good sounding instrument like this is a relatively economical way to try it out. My guitar instructor is very impressed with how it sounds, especially for 3 c-notes below a grand. well made surprisingly the back maple is pretty it sounds like my Cole Clark almost lol I bought a left handed 1500 dollar Cole Clark and didnt like leaving it leaning up against my chair so i bought this beater and its nice i like it. I started my left handed journey. The quality card was stamped 2009 so i guess it was sitting for awhile in the wharehouse all the better.wg
I wanted to surprise my husband with a guitar for our one year wedding anniversary. I had no clue about guitars, did a lot of research and that's when I came across the Sawtooth brand while looking for a decent and reasonably priced guitar. This guitar is beautiful and well built. For that price it is a bargain. The details and design were not skimped on. It is solid, sturdy and has a rich look and feel to it. I gave 4 stars because while Walmart has the item listed as a 6 string guitar, it is actually a 12 string. I have contacted Wal-Mart about this issue and after reordering the item for a 3rd time, I finally gave up because it does not appear to be available in a 6 string even though that is currently the only option showing on the website. They kept sending me a 12 string. They have assured me every time I reordered that the issue has been fixed but clearly that is not the case. My husband will just have to learn how to play the 12 string, he loves the guitar that much! By the way, it sounds amazing. You won't be disappointed, just be prepared to get a 12 string and not a 6 string.Karen

Hi I ordered the guitar and was told about the long delay and found that really honest and helpful, so many people nowadays don't mention the delay in advance then spend their time making excuses. When I reicieved the guitar I was very impressed, the action is perfect and I had spent lots of time worrying that I may find the action on a 12 string too much. It plays just as well as my six string acoustic and that's the best acoustic I've ever played, which is why I bought it. This was my 1st purchase from Richard and I am pretty sure it won’t be my last, whilst I am very much a beginner at guitar, returning after 20 years I have developed a habit for buying guitars that are somewhat inspirational to me, (well apart from my tele modern player, not my wisest purchase). I have always loved the sound of a 12 string acoustic, but was put off by the general implication they are not a good idea for beginners, however I came across a couple of YouTube reviews for the Godin A12, which suggested otherwise, one of which was Richards. I spoke with Richard fairly late one evening to enquire about stock via his live chat and he was still online which was surprising. The guitar was in stock and the order placed, each step of the process from order thru to workshop allocation, setup, testing and finally dispatch, were updated via email and on the website, the whole process took 10 days from ordering to my door step. Initial impressions were good, the guitar in its gig bag was very well packaged and arrived in perfect condition, after a quick tune up, the sound was amazing, the action is nice and low and it is considerably easier to play than I was expecting, in fact it only highlights how poor the initial setup on my tele was. Personally I have a long way to go but I definitely have an instrument that inspires me to pick it up anytime I have a few minutes to spare. If you are ever in need of a guitar and Richard stocks it then I would highly recommend Richard over some other online providers, you may not get it next day, but the wait is very much worth it. I received my Godin A6 a couple of weeks ago and I must say I am very impressed, not only with the guitar, but also the service from Richards Guitars. It arrived very well packed and ahead of the projected time. It's a little early to give a practical review of the guitar but suffice to say it's looking very promising, and will probably replace my Martin 000-28 for a lot of my gigs, especially when I'm playing in the full band. These tend to be longer than my solo gigs and a tad more frantic. One of the reasons I went for the A6 is because I have a bit of rheumatism in my thumbs and the narrower neck on the A6 helps a lot without sacrificing an acoustic guitar feel and sound. At the moment I'm experimenting with different strings. The guitar came with nickel wound but I thought I'd try some phosphor bronze which is more in keeping with my acoustics. The Jury is still out! I can certainly recommend Richards Guitars, their attention to detail and concerns over customer satisfaction are excellent.Brad B.
