Initially received defective product (G string was dead). DR sent a replacement quickly. First impression was these strings were mid-heavy, not my style at all. With a few knob tweaks was able to make them sound really good. I love the look on people's face at the gig trying to figure out how something that looks this way sounds just like non coated strings! They look great, sound great, and they're a fantastic conversation starter on breaks! Will Hurtubad

I love these strings. At first, they took a bit of getting used to, now, I wouldn't be without them. I feel that I have more control over each note, they sound great too. The only drawback would be that they are not as loud as normal strings, but if you have a good amp, it shouldn't matter.metalasanythingmari

Reviews:
Earlier this year I purchased my first 5-string bass and was disappointed with the loose tension of the floppy B string, I purchased these strings because I thought since they were designed for drop down tuning that they would provide better tension on the B string. And they did just that. Perhaps not as much as I would prefer, but they did out perform the stock string set by far. The WOW factor for me was the tone that the DRs produce right out of the package. Being a Classic rocker, these strings produce that bottom end that is so prevalent in that genre. I was so impressed with the tone that these have become my preferred string set for my 4-string P-bass (the 4-string set of course). If you are looking for a good bottom end tone, give these DRs a try.eehackett
normal installation, no stretching needed, tune to desired tone, and away you go, ive tune these up on my 5 string Squier deluxe active jazz bass played for a few hours put it back in the case played it the next day and its still in tune, sometimes longer even after a couple of days and it still stays in tune, for me "thats purfect", EASYbob24raw

After 45+ yrs of playing and the use of most other other brands, DR's are the best ever for me. Recently bought an Ibanez SR 655. Three months later I grew to dislike the sound and was ready to get rid of it. I decided to change the original strings "Elixir" first. After I mounted the "DR Fat Beams" what a difference. Best decision made. The SR 655 is now my favorite among my collection of six basses. They are all now strung with DR Fat Beams or DR Hi-Beams.XXander31

Reviews:
I picked up a Peavey Grind 4 practice bass to try out 35" long scale, and bought my first set of Ernie Balls (2816). The strings look great but are at least a half inch too short, see pic. I've never had an issue with long scale strings fitting my ESP or Schecter 35's in BEAD or EADG , but these look like they'll only fit a 34", and EB make no mention of this limitation. As strings are non returnable, looks like I'll have to eat the cost and toss them. I can't fault Musicians Friend at all and have had a great experience with them for 20 years, but hope any 35ers see this and take note. -unhappyFaceTheBass
I purchased a Fender American Deluxe Jazz Bass V in 2009 but never could quite get the tone I was looking for. The preamp is strong but the highs sounded like they were produced on a guitar not a bass (I like bass), the bass quickly got boomy and the mid control was pretty much unusable for me because of all the mids already inherent in the strings. So, I kept trying different string sets. In every string set I tried the mids just didn't sound, well, like bass mids. I had regretted my investment in that bass until today. Today I strung it with a set of Ernie Ball Slinky Flatwound Electric Bass 5 String Cobalt Flats, product number 2816. Wow, these are the strings this bass was waiting for. For you slappers, you can get a lot of brightness and very usable harmonic overtones. The bottom is strong too, not that deeply nauseous kind of bottom, but full and you can feel it. I get a great Santana-type studio sound with this set. Probably least present in this string set are the mids but that is perfect for this particular Fender. Now I can use the full range of the mid control and pushing it up helps me really cut through the mix. Oh, and the mids have a full bass-like presence now. Love it. I like these strings so much, I just order three more sets. So, if you have a Fender Jazz like mine and you have been frustrated with your string selections, I would say give these strings a shot. They truly redefine what a flatwound should sound like. Great strings. The Flacoid
I have tried several brands of flat wounds over the years (D'Addario, Rotosound, LaBella) but none compare to the tone I am getting from these Ernie's. I play a Musicman Stingray 5 HS and prefer flat wounds to reduce string noise and easy playability. Others have been pretty good but I prefer the punchiness I get from these Ernie's to any others I have tried. We'll see how long they hold up since I only played them a couple of times so far, but I'm loving the performance. I also noticed that they stayed in tune really well. I put them on for practice and made sure I stretched them well. I couple of days later came back to them and they were still in tune. Usually, new strings need additional tuning for the first few times I use them. Overall, I think I may have finally found my go to strings. In My Blood Bassist

Unfortunately, I do not have a 7-string axe but if I did, it would be strung out with these babies! I buy them for the 28, 38 & 58 strings for my SRV Strat to get that Texas tone. They play just as smooth & good as any of the other Ernie Ball strings I use. I love the heavy, warm-end tone & the strings do not disappoint AND they're easy on the fingers meaning they're smooth. If you bend strings up a whole step like I do, these strings will toughen you up real fast.. These strings last and never have I experienced any corrosion. Highly recommended if you want that Texas blues tone, jazz sound or you just wanna DJENT!John564Holloway
I was looking for a perfect set to stay super tight in Eb but also retain enough tension in lower tunings. I had been using the Not Even Slinky set and found the higher strings for be a little too thick and the lower a little too thin. So, I decided to give these a shot. I remove the .28 (Normally the 4th string) and that way, I have regular 11s at the top but super heavy strings at the bottom. When tuned to my signature Eb, they retain a lot of tension and are good for a nice chugging sound. When tuned any lower than Drop C, they start to lose a little tension, but still stay manageable. I'd say the lowest comfortable tuning is Drop A before they get too floppy. Overall great strings, EB is the best!Ryan
Ernie Ball Strings are great. They have a lovely "twang" to them when brand new. However, I DO like their Paradigm Strings the most, as they last for 6 months or more before I need to change them. Those Ernie Ball Paradigm Strings are the best, longest lasting strings that I have ever used. I wish Artist Guitars stocked the EB Paradigms (I'd have given a 5* Rating instead of 4* if they had Paradigm Strings). If/when they DO start to stock them and if their price is right, I'll purchase them for ALL my 7 or 8 guitars! ATM I usually purchase 3-pack deals via e-Bay. 😀 I only got these as I wanted a brand new set of 7-String Guitar Strings for my brand new and 1st ever 7 String guitar, the Artist Guitars' Spiritus 7 that I purchased recently. However, I am going to purchase Paradigm 7-String sets from now on. These non-paradigms are just temporary. I'll be purchasing another Acoustic Guitar or few in the future also, as I'd like a JB300NT V2 Steel String Acoustic as well as a new Nylon Classical Guitar. And I need a Bass or 2 also. LOL You can never have enough, let alone too many Guitars! Thank you Artist Guitars. You guys rock!Narayana

I had high hopes for this set of flatwounds to put on my hollowbody 5 string bass. I was disappointed, however. The higher tension of this string really adds fatigue to your hand muscles. The worst part is that the LOW B string totally came apart when winding around the tuning post. The strings were put on my a great luthier/guitar tech in my area….so it was not a matter that they were put on incorrectly. I contacted DR and they immediately sent out a replacement B string….so high marks for their customer service. In the meantime, however, I needed a B string and put on a LaBella Low B flatwound that plays and sounds fine but has a different tonal character than the DR. Don't know whether to take a chance on removing the LaBella and put the DR to make a matching set.roadcat
Round wounds are great strings but I found it difficult to dial in that old Fender Jazz bass sound on my basses. Flat wounds did it with ease and without any felt or palm muting. I bought a set of LaBella Deep talking flat wounds and they sound good but still fell short when it came to slapping. Since I used DR Fat beams primarily I decided to try DR Legend Flats. Wow, I have found the sound in my head…finally. Slap, finger style, palm muting, you name it. It sounds really great. Now I use Legend flats on all of my basses, including my 5 string. Last but not least, they feel good in my hands as well.Dandy Don
I'm a long time big fan of DR. I like their infinite lasting strings which keep their tone years and years, However I have been using Ernie Ball 2806 Flat Wound Group III on my Precision 70 with 62' pickup since 2010. P 62' pickup has an edgy top end and round low. I was curious about the legend and decided to give them a shot. I like the gorgeous gold wrapping at the end of the string and it looks awesome on my Olympic white Precision. A, D and G string sounds quite clear and open, but the E string is totally dead. No texture at all. It has thick low end though, but rather you use your nail or a pick, it has a dead click, and that's it. Quite a contrast with the other strings actually. It's a kind of sound I have heard on many R&B albums and may be your thing, but I personally prefer the Ernie Ball 2806 for Classic rock, Funk, Blues etc. The Ernie Ball 2806 do not have that strong E, but all strings are consistent and clear and cranking the low end a bit adds fatness to all strings. DR Legends may please many players and may possibly work better on more modern instrument. If DR claim to improve this I will try them again. Meanwhile, I am going back to my beloved Ernie Ball 2806.Precision70

Reviews:
Bought these Black coated strings last week and put them on a couple of days ago. Other reviews said they were dull and were weak. All I can say is they are very bright. I did not have any break while stringing and I have played my guitar hard for three days with no breaking. I can see that the coating may come off in the future. I have used the Black tape bass strings in the past and thought they would be similar. The coating seems far different which results in the strings being very bright. I would say as bright as any string I have ever played. The bass strings have a lower sound and the covering seems more rubbery. I am very happy with these strings I hope they last a very long time and don't break because being colored you can't just change one string. Also I only had to tune twice before the strings seated and stayed in tune. Must have something to do with the coating because I have never had strings settle that quick…Tiny Tim
I play nylon flat wounds wanted to give these a try. you do still feel the steel strings underneath the coating can't play them as long as I do actual nylons without feeling it in my fingers. only had them a short while and still getting use to how they play. I play them on a custom hand carved 5 string frettless Bass with a warmouth custom neck, they sound great so far not sure how long they will last.John
I've been playing bass with various church worship teams for more than 22 years now. I started using the Black Beauties sometime around 8 or nine years ago on my two electric bass guitars (one 4-, one 5-string). I love the low-key appearance, tone, quality, and how long they last. My only desire is to see these on sale at my local music stores, but buying them online has sufficiently filled my need.Jimmy

Reviews:
Trying out bass strings in search of that "perfect sound" is an expensive proposition. If you play a 34" scale five string you need search no more. As a recording and performing bassist the GHS 5-5M-DYB 5-string Bass Strings with Low-B is my choice of string for my two pre-Gibson Tobias basses, as it would be for my 35" scale basses if they made this in a long scale version, which they don't – yet. While nickel plated strings are often used to reduce fret wear, they are a warmer sounding string, and these have just the right blend of punch, brightness and low-end warmth. Most important they emphasize that primary tone that helps the bass lay solidly in the track without an inordinate amount of gain. The band sounds better when the bass sounds best. I have bought most of the strings on the market over the years and along with tone monster Jimmy Johnson, these are my go-to strings! I would give them a "10" if they made a long scale string… if GHS is reading, please add this to your line up.

I love these strings! Handmade in the USA. They play great, they sound amazing, they've lasted and have held up to alot of heavy playing with no issues. Having played them 2-3 weeks every day at least twice A-day they've held up and work great. Only drawback is that the coating started to come off which really isn't a drawback to be honest as it hasn't effected the sound or tone. Recommended for sure!Elijah
These strings look awesome no matter what light is shining on them. They are very bright under UV lighting. They feel and sound great! I've only had them for a couple of weeks so I cant say much for the life of the strings. The only draw back, well not really, on my Ibanez SR300 the E string seemed a little too long for the headstock. The gauge of the string was already at its full thickness when it reached my tuning peg. I managed to get it to wrap the peg once and tuned it, no problems so far 🙂 Not sure if this strings were made just for inline headstocks? But if you wanna add some flair to your guitar, this is the way to go!! I will definitely be buying Neon DR strings for the rest of my guitars!!Lee

I play mainly jazz, also some funk and latin genres. I think these are THE BEST AND MOST BALANCED sounding strings I ever came across. The tonal response and evenness you get from these are amazing. They really deliver that "piano-like" sound. On the other hand, they don`t last as long as some other strings do, like the ones under brand named with two letters. When broken in though, they deliver the same full smooth sound just much darker. It could be corrected with EQ setting on your bass to some extent (rise Highs). But hey, with this price/quality ratio, you just ought to at least try it !preventer2

I purchased a set of these strings about 4 months ago. I thought if they are like the regular slinky 5's and they last longer, that would be awesome!!! So, i slapped these on my 2008 LE sterling musicman and i am happy to say that they still sound fresh, 4 months into them. Coated strings work great people who sweat on stage alot. In comparison to DR black beauties and elixir strings, these strings just sound fantastic after heavy use. I would give the black beauties a 3 out of 5, the elixir's a 2 out of 5(mostly because the low b sounds stale right out of the box). However, these ernie ball coated slinky's get a 5 out of 5 for every aspect imaginable pertaining to strings. If there was any con to these, i guess it would be the lack in optional gauge sizing.Josh Morrison (www.oncethesun.co
I couldn't believe how killer these sounded on my fretted Wal bass, so I'm putting on a set on my fretless as well. The B is extremely solid sounding! No complaints at all–they feel good too. I've used many brands, and this is the best so far–now we will see how long they last.Steve-twnbY
Not much to say, theyre bass strings and pretty comfortable as well. They're my go to strings. Not much to say, theyre bass strings, fairly long and acommodate my long scale 35 scale basses as well as 34s. I play fingerstyle and these seem to last forever and have punch and sound for a good 6 months and I've used some even for close to a year, year and a half. A bit expensive in my opinion, but considering the fact that they last me a long while I'm fine with it.

I love the feel and sounds of the Bass strings. There's a reason the music store runs out.Rallen
I could not get these strings on my Wild Thing Bass. Too much wrap on the ball end. Very disappointed in these strings! Will not buy again! Couldn't return them either. Not happy. Googled for info to put strings on this bass and nothing listed, No help. I own 23 other basses and no problem putting on regular bass strings.

Better than expected. Solid tone. Easy to play. Just right. Not too bright, just clean and tight, as a well made set should sound. Lows still great, even at the slightly lighter gauge. Don't get me wrong, they can get plenty bright if you want that. Just that they didn't seem as extra bright as some kinds try to be because they can with all the "super nano ultra special coated infused …but still hand crafted somehow" type stuff. Was never happy with previous sets on my 5 string. With these, I was able to set up with slightly lower action. This alone is worth it on my instrument. Finally, it's the bass it should've always been. Waited way too long to find these. I hope they keep making them. Probably going to order a few extra sets and try to keep a few on hand. As others point out, I'm not sure there's another set with these gauges for 5 strings. To me these are just right in a lot of ways.Person
Overall: Don't pay any attention to the low price these are great strings. Have used Fender 7250's on all kinds of bass guitars they always sound great and feel good. Years of use have proved quality. I put them on my Jazz bass, my PJ, and my Squire, have used them on Samick, Music man, OLP, and Epiphone basses, all good.Scott
Been using the 8250-5M set for awhile. Wanted to try a lighter gauge. I get more guitar tones out of these. I was concerned I might overpower them since I'd used medium gauge for a couple of years. These are literally perfect on my Modern Player Jazz Bass V and 2 1993 Jazz Plus Vs. I bought the Modern Player new from Musiciansfriend. I think this light set is the set that it had on it. I use a pick, single and double thumb as well as two finger picking techniques. The E and B strings give a nice low end. The A, D and G strings have a growl and bright tone and respond well to picking or plucking. I'll be using these strings for some timegeorgesguitars

what can i say, i have been using Ernie Ball Slinky's for almost twenty years.and would not think of any other string. they are so flexible, i think i am using regular guitar strings. it doesn't take a Hercules to pull the strings down to the frets. and they always have the sound i am looking for. look, i am going to shoot straight. most musicians are not rich.and struggle until that day(if it ever comes) we get discovered or finally break through. most of us don't. so, if i can get a string that allows me to do what i can with a bass, and sound like the most expensive bass ever made, at a price where i can eat dinner that night, that's a win-win. so whether i am playing for a bunch of my friends, or playing in some major concert venue.i will continue to use Ernie Ball products.david
I've used Ernie Ball guitar strings for quite a while now, so when I got myself a bass I immediately knew I would try their bass strings as well. So far, so good. I'm just as happy with the bass strings as I have been with the guitar strings. Excellent brand; great quality and value.lumina_racer
Nice, lightweight strings with a good feel and excellent durability. The Slinky series give a great bright sound to the player, which is great for overall sound of the instrument. This lighter gauge I recommend for some of my beginner and/or younger students, especially while developing grip and finger strength. Postage from Artist was of course, super fast. Service is generally excellent, and while I have had some issues with their own brand products in the past, they've always played straight and fairly.

I have never been faithful to any string company, or weight, or wind. I used to get a different set on purpose each time. This allowed me to get a good feel of almost every string on the market. I tried these at the suggestion of a friend. I threw them on my custom Jazz, and they sounded amazing. Just enough bite, unlike most new strings that make you sound like a metallic cyborg for the first few weeks. (I guess some people like that) This was roughly 7 months ago, and I just bought my second set of cleartone mediums. Not because they're dead, or broken, but because in case I lose a string at a show I want to have backup. These strings are simply the best strings on the market for a good overall sound and unbeatable reliability.SteadybasS

Absolutely love these strings on my 5 string jbass! Smooth feel and sound, rarely goes out of tune.cfis4887
I like these strings alot; they feel smooth and play smooth and have good deep bass tones. Not as thumpy as GHS Precision Flats, maybe more like Chromes. String-to-string they're pretty consistent – the G and B strings don't sound like they're from different sets, which I've found to be true for alot of strings. The G string is actually fairly beefy, not so thin and tinny or harsh that I dread playing it. Also the B is fairly well defined, even played open – not that vague tone that could be a B or it could be a Bb or a C. A little bit bright for my own taste but they're still new, so we'll see what happens when they break in morehamlinks
