I've been a D'addario guy for a long time, and use them on all my guitars. I like the phosphor bronze tone on my acoustics, and use the extra lights because I have hand and finger joint issues. Actually 10s are pretty heavy for me, I use 8s on my electrics. Anyway, they sound great, are easy to play and have always been reliable for me.James

A friend of mine put light gauge electric strings on his acoustic guitar so it would be easier to play. I did like the feel but the sound was too thin so when I came across the Extra Light D'Addario's for acoustics I was excited to try them. My preferred style of playing an acoustic has recently become almost all finger-picking without finger picks. I tried them on my vintage classic dreadnought Yamaha F335ii and they sound good with a little less low end and a little more thin high end which you would expect. Also there is a tendency for the little E string to rattle as I use an upward stroke with the index or middle finger to play it. I will try switching that string out with a little higher gauge to alleviate that problem. Your style (light or heavy) of playing may determine whether these strings are right for you. They are great for strumming light rhythm with a balanced bright sound using a Fender thin pick so I would definitely use them for recording rhythm parts. For recording finger-picked parts I will continue using regular light gauge strings on a Martin. The D'Addario extra lights are easy on the fingers and good for practicing any style. I mothballed my Guild F212, which I bought in 1969, for a couple of years. When I got it back out I decided to spend the extra bucks and get these strings. I was immediately impressed with the sound of these strings as I wound them on. I start out roughly tuning the strings a step or two low and all was well until the last string. As I wound that string up to a D, it broke. That had never happened in over 50 years and now I am stuck with an 11-string box. I have been searching for the perfect string ever since I bought my Guild F212 in 1965, and I believe I may have found it. Besides their extraordinay clarity and uniformity, these Thomastik-Infeld strings are the easiest to tune (even with Schaller machines this box has always been a beast). Oddly they tend to slide down considerably in pitch overnight, but hold it very well while playing – including heavy flat picking. If I get a month's use out of these sounding this good, I can stop looking.Hard T.

I usually use brands that cost more – I decided to try these out on my 12 string because I like to try out different strings and they were cheap. As I was putting them on, I immediately noticed that the strings needed to be stretched out a lot more than the brands I usually use. As I was tuning them up, the small G string snapped. Later one of the high E strings snapped. I was afraid to keep tightening the strings to get them up to pitch because they did not stretch out like normal ones. When I finally got ten strings tuned, they kept going flat. Eventually they stretched out & actually sounded nice (with ten strings on a 12 string guitar). I ended up taking them off the next day and throwing them out & putting a new pack of nicer strings on. I've been changing guitar strings for 32 years so I know how to do this – I've worked with many different brands & types of strings (80/20, phosphor bronze, silk & steel, coated, etc). These are outstanding strings. For many years I held off using them because of the relatively high price. I had read and heard the general narrative about how much better they felt and how much longer they lasted than conventional strings. I recently purchased a nice mahogany Taylor and it had a factory set of Elixirs on the guitar. When you play guitar outside, your strings decay pretty quickly, unless you've got coated strings for protection. The coating on most coated strings get frayed and buzzy too quickly. A set of Elixirs will last three or four weeks of daily outdoor playing, and virtually never break. I can't imagine how long they'd last if I only played indoors!whowhatwhywhenwherehow

To me, the advantages are 1) they last longer before the intonation goes sour and the treble starts to decay 2) they are quieter, meaning less string/finger squeak 3) they seem extremely uniform and predictable. Try them, they're great. Feel nice, sound wonderful, last a long time. I've been through so many brands and so many different types of string, and these are the absolute best (for me). Even better than the expensive Austrian and German brands. I play many acoustic gigs, most are three sets a night. Some mainstream brands don't even last for one gig, going dead too soon. And if you try to squeeze a second gig out of them, it's normally the wound third string that disintegrates, regardless of manufacturer or price. But these White Bronze strings hold up well. My acoustic guitar is also stiff to play (yes, I should get an easier-playing guitar), but these feel perfect and my fingers aren't beat up by the end of the night. These strings are great for archtop guitars that carry a magnetic pickup. I play my Gretsch archtop unplugged every now and then and the flat wound jazz strings just don't have much acoustic presence. I tried the DR Zebras and they are pretty weak when plugged in. I service guitars for local player and collectors. One of my customers preforms regularly with a set of USA Ovation's (Ovation 6868 Elite Standard primary & Ovation 1868 Elite backup). Over the years we have tried on 3 or 4 different brands and gauges with varying results. About two years ago I installed a set of Cleartone 7412 EMP Phosphor-Bronze Light 12-16-25-33-43-53 Acoustic Strings on the pair and never looked back. Customer has not once broke a string, feels great without the Elixir overly "slick" feeling, and these last a very long time before going dead. The Cleartone 10's were for a relative's 3/4 size acoustic guitar. Their lightness suits it very well and have significantly improved the tone, resonance, volume and response of the instrument. The player feel of the strings is excellent and they are oxidation resistant, so they stay good and bright. So although they are a bit more expensive than some other string sets, a regularly played instrument is worth the upgrade. They do turn out to be a pleasing choice. Okay. I do things a little differently sometimes. I have an Ovation 1778 Elite with a maple neck very similar to an electric neck. So I decided to string it like an electric. I put a set of DR 10's strings on it and replaced the wound third with a plain .018 string. Wow! This is a fun guitar to play! I'm mostly an electric guy but lately I've been playing the Ovation at home almost exclusively. There is a whole new set of lead sounds available to me and the strings sound great for flat pickin'. I'm a DR fan anyway. They are just great strings. I am really suprized at the fulness of these light strings. Try DR, you'll be glad you did.Aubieone
In over 50 years of playnig I have never found a better string than DR. I have always used the medium gauge however due to some arthritis developing in my left index finger I have switched to light gauge to see if it can help. I have never been careful about changing strings and the DR strings last a long time. I change strings once or twice a year. I play a lot and a year is too long. I would not recomment anyone wait that long as the strings, any strings, will get to sounding dull. I use acoustic strings but have a fishman pickup installed in my guitar. I have only played one gig since putting on the light gauge strings and playing thump style the bottom end seems to suffer a little so I have to come up with some adjustments like pidking harder with my thump pick. I haven,t used any other strings than DR for the past 20 years. They are definately the best.JT

Definitely the best strings at the price point lately. They have a thinner or smoother wind than Ernie Ball slinkys or Daddarrio exl and this results in less finger noise and a zingier tone IMO. I'm into clean and classic rock, and I doubt you would like these over the former two names if you were into more modern and metal sounds. It depends on the guitar for me, on my strat I could use just about any strings. My guitars with humbuckers seem more picky, at least to my ears. I prefer these over the other two as far as cheap strings go, and these are often cheaper. Win win. According to a Fender rep, these are what came on the Fender PJ bass I ordered from Musician's Friend. They produce the classic Fender tone I wanted. I eventually replaced them with a set of Fender 7250L (.040, .060, .080, .100) to make it easier to play on the guitar's 9.5" fingerboard radius. I stayed with Fender because of the tone that the 7250M strings produce. The Light's have slightly less oomph on the low end, yet all the tone while the lighter gauge makes for nice melodic work on the high end of things. Tried these on a friend's recommendation and I'm not disappointed. I put these on a nearly new Gibson J45 Studio and was happy the strings that came new on the guitar were gone. These sound so much sweeter. It's only been a few weeks but I think they'll last as long as most strings (usually a D'Addario user). A normal set is 12-53, for some reason these are 12-54 but I couldn't notice much difference on the larger 6th string. Try a set.mmall001
I just recently picked my guitar back up after about 20 years of not playing. I have Gibson Hummingbird that I always had and the did use Martin strings on. I really got the bug about playing and ended up buying a Yamaha R 700 as well as a Seagull S6 (with a Seagull Artist Mosaic on the way). While talking to Josh on MF one day about strings he told me about these Earthwoods–lighter gauge–.11-.52. He swore by them. I had a credit with MF so I bought two sets. They are as good on my Seagull S6 as the Martin's ever were and easier to play (I finger pick mostly) and the combination of the full sound of the S6 and the Ernie Ball Earthwoods is a perfect combination. I've had them on for three weeks already and play sever hours every day and they still sound bright and full of tone. I put the other set on my Yamaha just recently and they sound as good as the Martins ever did. Whether they will remain crisp remains to be seen (each guitar is different). But in anticipation of getting my Seagull Artist Mosaic soon I've decided to buy four 6 packs of the Ernie Ball Earthwood Strings with my certificate from Backstage pass. I couldn't ask for a sweeter deal than that.KB

Having been a long-time user of Elixer acoustic strings, I was afforded the opportunity to try D'Addario XS Acoustic coated strings. After restringing my vintaged Harmony Stella baritone, best midrange tone guitar I own. Tuned her, after a little stretch time fine-tuned her. First strum my ears were amazed! The tonal range of these strings, warm, bright, full bodied, this guitar has never sounded so good, I can only imagine how incredible they will sound on the Taylor! I used to use this brand in my early days of playing guitar. Then I decided at one point that the brand just wasn't cutting it anymore so I switched! With this new variety coming out, I was very excited to give it a try. I haven't had them on my guitar for long enough to see how long they last. However, the strings seem very high quality and give off an extremely vibrant, bright sound. They're very easy on the fingers and and easy to play. Like all strings, they need to be tuned regularly at first but after the first few times, they hold a tune very well. Im very pleased and wouldn't hesitate to buy these again in the future. Overall: So I've been playing guitar for 30+ years, both acoustic and electric. I got a pair of these free as a test set through Guitar League. Here's my take on them. First, I've had these strings on my Martin for a minimum of 5 months, and while I'm not gigging or playing hours a day, these still are by far..very far, the longest lasting strings I've ever used. They still sound crisp and very new, with just a little loss of the crispness of brand new strings. Second, they are very quiet when sliding up and down the strings, and don't have that very loud squeak you get with many new strings, which is nice when playing quieter passages. This probably has to do with the extended life coating they put on the strings. I absolutely love these strings so far. I've already purchased another set for my 6 string and 12 strings. They sound terrific, are smooth, comfortable to play, stay in tune, and after all these months still sound almost new…amazing strings.

You can't go wrong with D'Addario, and since 1980 or so, I've used these, or their phosphor bronze counterparts. They're loud, without being abrasive, and the "stretch" goes away faster than any other string I know of… meaning they settle in and hold tune, quickly. These feel great beneath my fingertips, and they won't go dead after a few days, like some others. Good price, great strings. I also use the .011 thru .052 sets for open C tuning.Loren
I have come to prefer 80/20 strings over the more popular 92/8 Phosphor Bronze strings. While 92/8 sound "richer," there is a certain clarity I prefer with 80/20 strings. I was using Martin MSP-3100 and find the EJ11 Daddario very subtly clearer with a slightly more defined bass E string response. The Martin MSP-3100 are good strings and the bass is .54 vs Daddario .53, which may explain the difference. I play fingerstyle, often fairly complex tunes, and find with a 000 size Martin that the EJ11 gives a very even response and good clarity. I am now experimenting with the Daddario EXP11. And hey, stings are nicely priced from Sam Ash so why look further?
Using these (they are my go-to for acoustics) on my Taylors (GC3 and GS Mini) is like turning up the treble knob on the guitar. Bright and lively and they last a decent amount of time if you keep the guitar in the case. Even dead they sound good but I really love the jangle you get when you put a fresh set of these on. If you're looking for a muted tone, these are not that. If you want your guitar to sing, though, they fit the bill.Joseph

Jumbo king acoustic phosphor bronze still the world`s favourite acoustic string that has been around for decades and will continue to do so. with a 92/8 bronze alloy made especially for us to our exacting specifications in the uk. this set continues to remain the favourite string for such eminent performers as john renbourn and sir bob geldof. please note: w denotes wound string johns thoughts on his strings of choice in my search for the clearest set of bronze strings, i tried some old rotosounds in black and red packets that i had somehow managed to hang on to for years. they sounded really good, bright and well balanced but with a rich tone. the company were amused to hear that anybody should still have strings going so far back but assured me that, several packet designs later, their new strings were still the same quality. rotosound bass strings have a high profile world-wide which may have overshadowed their guitar strings. james how, who founded the company in the fifties, engineered a new type of string-winding machine that was a step ahead of the industry and all the strings are produced to the same degree of precision. in addition to the phospher-bronze round wounds, rotosound also make guitar strings in the piano string design. that is with the wrap wire stopping short of the ball end so that a section of the core wire is exposed and only the core wire comes into contact with the saddle. these strings are called ‘country gold’. it is actually an old idea and i have a feeling that the very first steel strings used on the guitar in the 1800′s were like that. the gauges for both types of string are 060 to 018 covered, and 026 to 008 plain.

Great Value for price, superb tone and string tension with a wound A 5th which enhances bottom end tone, Oh, and a 10 gauge G 3rd plain octave as opposed to flimsy 8 gauge available on others. What's more…. it's a well known and respected UK brand and provides an excellent tone. Best I've used on my 12 string to date, so the search is over. PS, with regards to String tension these string seem to me to have the same tension (or slightly lower) as 10 -47 gauge USA alternatives previously used, with a richer tone and greater volume acoustically..134gloria44

OK, In 37+ years of playing I have used all kinds of strings. Coated, Non-Coated, Frozen, Plain, Phosphor Bronze, silver colored, gold colored, nickel plated, even tried "retro" strings etc. The coated strings to me usually sound dead out of the box, or they are 3x the cost but don't last anywhere near long enough to justify the price. I have discovered it's mainly hype. I don't deny there is a coating on the strings but that is makes a HUGE difference…yeah not so much. The longest running type of string I have used were Phosphor Bronze. But with my guitar mellowing out there is more bass. The "Retro" strings were really not bad for tweaking the bass but longevity was lacking and the company YEARS ago made them in PA are now making them in Mexico. So I tried a set of D'Addario Nickel Bronze in Custom Light and they are FANTASTIC!!! The sound quality is over the top. Mids come alive, highs are clear but not overpowering, and the lows are clean, not muddy, bright but not jangley. My daughter says it almost sounds like a 12 string…LOL. They are fantastic and my Martin has NEVER sounded better. I play daily and have had these on for over a month and still not ready to change. I'll push the first few sets to the max just to see how far they CAN go. My guess is two months…we'll see. Disclaimer: I wipe down my guitar and strings after each time I play them. I'll also use dunlop string conditioner on them too. So that may help as well. Bottom Line – – If you are wondering about these strings…STOP WONDERING AND BUY THEM. If you've been putting off buying them STOP AND BUY THEM!!! They are worth EVERY PENNY!!!wife2seti
Used trad phospher bronze strings initially. Sound was too bright and brash on my full mahogany guitar. Tried Martin Retro next- hated those. Couldn't make it a week with the set. Had to take 'em off. Tone was just lifeless. I expected these Nickel Bronze to be the same experience, but gave them a try and was pleasantly surprised – loved them! With standard phosphor bronze the guitar had a braying tinny cartoon voice, by comparison. With the NB strings all the warm tone I hoped the mahogany would be able to convey immediately appeared and began to bloom. Its like I'm finally truly hearing the way the instrument was made to sound. You will sacrifice a bit of volume, not alot- and its worth it believe me for the sound you will achieve. I'm mostly a hybrid picker- true fingerstyle players will get even more satisfaction I would expect. Again, this is on a solid top all mahogany guitar. I cannot say how these may sound on a spruce or cedar top. Try them and let us know!Strumbum
I am beginner guitarist and at the start Nickel Bronze thought a little bit harder to my fingers than other 2 strings I tried: D'addario 80/20 BRONZE (EJ11) and PHOSPHOR BRONZE (EJ16). You also need to strum harder. But sound I really like. Also Nickel Bronze is 2x expensive than 80/20 BRONZE (EJ11). Next time I think I go with 80/20 BRONZE (EJ11), because they are 2x cheaper and not so hard and have a deeper tone. But I think is worth to try. If you have a hard fingers and you like to strum hard, I think you can really like them. If you like warmer tone, I think PHOSPHOR BRONZE (EJ16) is better choice.djdeivs
