So hey. I’m kinda new at this sort of thing. I did grow up playing music in the bands and orchestra. Mostly woodwinds. I did always want to play some strings. So finally I do. I’ve been at the guitar for a little while now. And it’s very exciting to find an opportunity to study bass. This instrument seems very fundamental and good to me. So I’m excited about it. This is a great acoustic-electric bass. I originally purchased it to use as an alternative to plugging in my electric bass. I instantly fell in love with it. It stays in tune. The nut is of appropriate measurements and the frets are greatly positioned. I changed the factory installed strings with some acoustic bass strings and it sounded so nice! Been playing electric for 25 years. Decided to try and learn how to play an upright. Am very pleased with this bass. Seems to be built sterdy. Sounds great once dialed in. Pick up is really hot so I run it through my sansamp and it cleans it up pretty well. Only cons I really see are the hot pickup, and the case it comes with is just a tad too small. I've got it in right and the stand in, but it still pushes out the bottom a little. Will be getting a flight case for it. Recorded it at home through my computer, sounds great.Jon
First of all, I never expected to get an upright bass for Christmas. I've been playing electric bass for nearly 35 years, even graduated to the six string. I have been playing with the same classic rock band since 1985. I have a broken American Standard that I bought from a guy that bought it in 1941, The neck broke at the scroll when somebody stole it from him years ago at a New Year's Eve gig. He had it repaired, but the neck broke while I had it again. It was weak where it had been repaired before. Anyway, the Stagg bass plays like butter compared to the old one and it can be adjusted more to my height as well. The other bass, although I could play it, was a little too tall for me. The pickup is really hot in it. The other neat features it has is the line input for a CD player, mp3 player, etc, and a headphone jack for practicing. I never tried the input, but I did try the headphone jack. The volume doesn't have to be turned up to hear this thing well through the headphones.PC

I love this bass. I wish I found it before getting an electric cello. It's still a challenge to transition from bass guitar but at least the tuning is the same and the notes are where I expect them (unlike violin, viola, cello). I love the fact I can practice without much noise by plugging headphones directly to the instrument, and for playing through an amp, there is no issue with feedback. It's also way more practical than a full size acoustic upright bass for transportation. I'm not a huge fan of the Stagg logo, but other than that, it's a great looking instrument.Matt F

I bought this bass at an estate sale and it is a beautiful instrument with a really nice sound. My colleague has a Czech bass that he bought for 9k and this bass sounds every bit as good. it took me some time to wrap my head around the idea that it was made in china but my ears and hands tell me that it is a beautiful instrument. The neck is fatter than my Engelhardt- EM1 laminate bass and the fingerboard is a bit wider near the body. I have equipped the bass with a Krivo magnetic pickup which allows me to get significant volume without feedback and no piezo "cIatter" and finger noise. I play it through an Acoustic Image Coda R amp with and Acoustic Image 2 x 10 (TenX) and, not to sound arrogant, but I never hear any sting bassist with a better sounding setup and this includes professional concerts i attend. I play the bass in a loud 7 piece swing band with horn section and with an 18 piece big band and, equipped with this pickup and this amp, I can lay down the groove. A lot of that has to do with the amp and pickup but the bass has a full, rich and almost "wah" kind of vibrance that my Engelhardt does not possess. The bottom line is, for the money, this bass is a great deal. I was thinking of spending 3-5 k for a carved bass and then found this one and I could not be more pleased. I still have cognitive dissonance over it being made in China and not Europe but that is my prejudice. One caveat is that, because I bought it at an estate sale, I am not sure if the strings are the original "D'Addario Prelude" string or were replaced. i am also not sure if he had the bass setup by a Luthier but am inclined to think not because the bass did not seem to have been played much. If you search for "Cremona SB-3" on you tube, there is a video of me playing that is okay. I need to make a new one but it will give you some idea. The tapping in the video is me tapping my foot. The playing on the video is less than stellar. I need to make a new video.Michael

got one used in good condition but discounting the minor scratches and a minor ding near the strap button the quality of the workmanship was excellent for a bass in this price range. Plays really well and only a minor bit of fret buzz which was easy to get rid of by raising the bridge a bit. Action was really low when i got it so it could easily stand to get raised a fraction. The sound is very bass heavy on the neck pickup by itself. You can dial in a bit more treble by using setting 2 and mixing the volume level and tone of the two pickups. The bridge pickup is very treble sounding – almost too thin. If you turn down the tone on the bridge pickup it sounds better. I am not using the bridge p/u by itself ever – seems to be good for maybe only a few songs. Going forward I could see routing out the cavity and putting in a MM type pickup. Other than that the sound can get very close to Jack Bruce/Cream sound along with good Hard Rock to Heavy Metal sounds. You can dial in an acceptable jazz sound or R&B sound but it's not quite there so I'm using this baby for mostly Cream, Steppenwolf, CCR, etc. Works good for old-time R&R. Nice sleek black finish and chrome hardware gives it a nice dark appeal. Pots and controls work well and are smooth. Tuners are good but make the neck a little heavy so maybe replace with ultralights at some point. The neck does tend to dive so I'm moving the strap button nearer to the neck – almost at the end and move the strap button at the end of the body up an inch. I would also recommend a thick strap with rough leather on your shoulder to keep it from slipping – don't use a web strap as this will just let it neck dive when you let go. I'm hoping once i get lighter tuners and move the strap buttons the issue goes away but i can live with it for now. Well worth the asking price but if you can get one in good condition used it will still be a good deal even with minor cosmetic flaws.Bones
The Epiphone EB-3 cherry Bass is one beautiful guitar, but has cosmetic quality issues: The mahogany laminate on the face of the body, was glued on at a very "VERY" slight perpendicular angle, and not parallel with the neckline. (the back laminate IS straight). The fret markers are beautiful pearl, but the ninth fret marker is "blatantly" FLAT WHITE, and stands out like a neon light among the other markers. I can't understand how the person installing them, fail's to do a simple "match" of the inlays (either make them ALL white, or else ALL pearl!)(or REJECT a mismatched one!). (in comparison, my Epiphone Les Paul, has excellent matching pearl fret markers). I ordered a second EB-3, to see if I could get a better one, and had the chance to compare the two within the 45 day grace return period. The second one was worse, and had "TWO" mismatched white fret markers, with the other ones being "pearl". The mahogany laminate of the second guitar was not at all as deep and hypnotically mesmerizing as the first one they had sent, with the second guitar's mahogany appearing very flat, or dead/dull looking. (even though both guitars have polished clear gloss finish).(mahogany wood grain usually looks like a "natural mile deep 3D hologram iridescence", and the grain "dances and changes shapes" in the light as you move it around). Also the red tint on the sides of the second guitar appeared to be a shade lighter, and slightly mismatched appearing to the tint of the laminate tint to me. The first guitar's sides were slightly darker, and matched the laminate beautifully. On the second guitar, the bridge pickup holes were all half misaligned upon the poles with the cover tightened down anyways, right upon the poles permanently crimping each hole distorted over up on the pickup cover. The cover holes are half covering the poles. I kept the first guitar. It had a bit of fret buzz, but my technician fixed it in about 15 minutes. It plays perfect, sounds great!, and looks beautiful!Sir Ripstring
Overall: First of let me say this- the photos on zZounds website, while perfectly fine and acceptable, do not do this bass justice. It is absolutely gorgeous. The quality is high and there are no sharp frets or concerns anywhere. The first thing I did was fiddle with the pickup selector, and the volume and tone knobs to see what I could get out of it. There is a wide spectrum of sound. At it's brightest, it's not super bright, but then again, the first thing I did was put flatwounds on it, so that was expected. But let me tell you- this is one fat bottomed girl! The lows are expressive and the sustain on every string is amazing. There have always been the old Squier vs Fender and Epiphone vs Gibson debates. Epiphone, with this bass, has made the differences a lot harder to spot.Bruce

Overall: I'm a guitar player that switched to bass 20 years ago. I've missed the ability to play full chords and solo in a range that can be easily heard. I tune this bass an octave lover than guitar with the same string relationships. Low E, not B. This bass allows me to do that with no set up issues. If youre coming from a 4 string this will be a wide neck, but 5 string users will adust. It's well balanced and finely finished. LONG REACH TO 1ST FRET ON LOWEST STRING, which is F for me, but I can get it. The fan fret design probably helps to keep string tension equal. I have a Novax (Ralph Novak invented the fret system) so I'm okay with it.Jeff

I bought this bass awhile ago. After reading several negative reviews I think the issues they have is this bass is shipped with no tension on the truss rod/neck. Out of the box it is not playable, sounds horrible and you need to adjust the truss rod to add relief to the neck. After making that adjustment this bass is a great beginners bass and sounds good. You will not be disappointed. Just watch a YouTube vid on how to add relief to a guitar neck / adjust truss rod.Gerald
I got this just to use for home recordings after YEARS away from bass playing. I've owned better in the past, but this is not bad! It has a good tone and the neck is easily playable. Sounds good playing through a Fender Rumble 25 watt amp. If there is one thing I don't like, it's the round-wound strings. I first started with flat wounds, playing funk and R & B, so the strings aren't as "warm" as I'd like. Still good for slap styles or for rock.Lee
I bought this bass back in 2003, and wanted to start playing again. I played bass in the early 1980's till 90's. I grew up with Rock to Metal days and had a Fender bass. I got caught up in marriage and working 12 hr days , so I sold my equipment. This bass plays well once you get it set up. Sounds great for a budget bass. This is an excellent instrument. Well made. It's doesn't sound exactly like an acoustic upright, but it's very easy to play, and has its own tonal character, that sounds really nice. I think you can use foam, or nylon coated strings to make it sound more like an upright. A perfect addition to any bass arsenal.
Overall: This was a hate buy. I've always hated Ibanez basses because the necks have been awful. I own many different basses in the different brands. Ibanez is not reliable, it seems like they always need a neck adjustment. Anyway, this bass is actually fantastic. It's set up nice out of the box and the sound is beautiful. Of course you can never really emulate a true acoustic upright but it does well.I'm surprised by the craftsmanship on it. There's no blemishes, it's got a nice finish to it. Really beautiful to look at and listen to, which is a first for me because Ibanez has always sounded 'tinny' to me. In comparison it does well against NS Design, obviously I still love my NS basses however this is a good choice if you're looking to save a few hundred.I keep it in a controlled temp/humidity room because I now live in Nevada (it's terribly dry here), so I'm not sure how it would handle in an uncontrolled temp & humidity space. Honestly, because it's an Ibanez I don't think I'd trust it outside of that room… Never played this one on stage as I got it right when COVID hit.The stand is good even though I'm not a fan of Tama. Always had trouble with their snares and other hardware growing up. Everything seems solid considering the brands used.I'd recommend this one. But will always be leary about reliability. Ask any store who sells Ibanez and they can show you the stack of take backs because of poor craftsmanship… And then ask them about the other brands, if they're honest about it they'll tell you they have more Ibanez they have to return or deduct price on from craftsmanship than any of the other brands combined and second to that is Peavey. It's pretty sad. This one is a good one.

There are things that I love about this bass: the weight, the balance, the uniqueness. Despite being really expensive, it's probably my go to travel instrument just for the weight and size. Having said that, for the price the quality and fit and finish is really disappointing. The thin veneer is beautiful, but really thin and easy to damage. Beyond that mine was clearly not put together well. I alternate between playing with fingers and a pick and couldn't figure out why I kept hearing an odd noise when playing with the pick. Well, one of the four neck bolts was installed incorrectly and the washer is just rattling around, but the bolt is unable to be loosened or tightened, so obviously it was cross threaded on installation. My biggest complaint is the frets were not installed on the neck correctly, they actually hang off one side a bit and cut my left hand to shreds while playing fast. For the price it should have been comfortably playable out of the box, not needing as much work as a used guitar. I'd be really hesitant to buy another Ibanez after this experience.Andy

First I should warn you that there is a quality-control issue with recent batches of the Embassy Pro – the bridge is positioned too far forward so it can't be intonated properly (the E-string 12th-fret harmonic was about a semitone flat compared to the fretted note even with the saddle as far back as it could go). This isn't Rimmers' fault as it was shipped straight from Gibson's DC and they were great about organising the return. Tuning problems notwithstanding, the bass plays smoothly and has a really rich, aggressive tone – depending on the strings you use, it can go from a hard-rock Rickenbacker clang to deep, subby reggae sounds. I found it hard to sound subtle or laid-back though, so I wouldn't recommend it for groove-oriented styles. But if you're in an avant-garde punk band, the dodgy tuning might even be an asset…Martin
Not sure if there are many minuses to this bass; its an old school 20 fret P bass kind of neck beast. The tone control works well and I like the passive pan, rather than a toggle or two volumes. Heavy duty humbucker tones but not muddy like an SG, still retins some P bass sound. (cant comment on bridge pu i dont use it) Back of neck is slick, I dont mind, some may apply sandpaper to make it matte. Overall QC seems good. Weight is decent at 8.3lbs, balance not bad if slung low, doesnt seem neck heavy. Bridge isnt great but a lot better than the fatal Gibson 3 point bridge. Absolutely belting and beautiful acoustic bass, lovely to play, great sound and lovely to look at. Acoustic basses are great if you’re time and space limited and just need something to pick up and play without the faff of plugging in and finding headphones etc (which i find a bit anti social for my partner and kids). I’ve tried a few acoustic basses and this is the best and it has a surprisingly good slap sound, which I hadn’t expected from an acoustic bass! All in all if you want something to play at home this is the best. I can’t comment on the electric sound (this has a preamp) as I haven’t used it yet and it’s not what I bought it for.D R. M.
This is a great bass! I've owned and played a handful of acoustic basses from different companies in my time and i like this one the best. Let me state first, I'm not a fender guy but…I've always loved the sound of an acoustic bass and I always wanted one, so i shopped around for a while and went through a few different models to arrive at this one. I've had it for a year now and i grow to love it more all the time! The pictures on GC dont do it justice…The high gloss black finish on the body and headstock is sleek and sexy and the bold block inlays coupled with the jazz bass neck and headstock give this beauty a different attitude compared to other acoustic basses and it plays smooth and sounds great! The biggest thing I noticed with this model compared to the other acoustic basses I've had is that this one really projects well and has great tone plugged or unplugged! I travel a lot and this bass has gone a lot of places with me and it's always sure to turn heads. I live in a place where i wouldn't want to crank my amps to play electric so this has become the main bass i use to practice with and i have a lot of fun with it. It looks and sounds great, it's built and finished well, it's fun and smooth to play, it holds its tuning and the electronics don't drain batteries…what more could you ask for? I would definitely recommend this bass, especially for the price point.Ray

This is a nice bass. I'm an Ibanez fan, and have had a top-of-the-line SoungGear bass for many years, but wanted a nice simple bass – no active electronics/batteries. I also own Fender and Yamaha basses, and this one holds its own nicely. Nice neck (not quite as thin as some of the SoungGears, but not bad), nice feel, and nice tone from the single pickup. Great for small gigs, jamming etc. Play it through a decent amp & speakers and you'll get decent and varied sounds simply be adjusting the tone control. Nice!Hawkeye Fan
I found myself away from home due to a family emergency with no idea how long it would be before returning. Since I had left in a hurry I didn't take any instrument and three weeks later I wished I had. So began my search for an inexpensive full size bass to practice on when I found free time. I ultimately chose the Ibanez GSR100EX for several reasons. This bass is a no frills offering having a single passive pickup and nothing more than a volume knob and a tone knob. The pickup is surprisingly beefy. It has that "fast" Ibanez neck and true to their advertising, it came setup with the same quality that you would see on more expensive models. Every screw was tight. Neck was perfectly straight. No dead spots and the frets were well dressed and crowned. The finish (I got the black model) was perfect. No cracks or hazing. Even the action and pickup height was just the way I like it. It's quite lightweight too. Maybe I just got lucky but other than some minor intonation adjustments it was ready to go right out of the box. I would play this bass anywhere and not be lacking. It's not just a beginner's bass by any means although a beginner couldn't find a better value IMHO. It may not have the tonal palette or lack the features of basses that cost many hundreds more, but it does deliver the basics and does it well. When I get back home I intend to convert it to a BEAD bass. DON'T let the price cause you concern. It really is a great deal.IamBuzzy
In highschool I played bass a lot and on the side I learned to play the guitar. BUt once I got into college I started to play guitar way more, to the point my Carvin 6 six string custom bass sat in its case for about 6 months because I had no chance to play it. Three years later, I started playing bass again but unfortunately I don't have any gear. BUt I have a couple of friends that have basses they let me borrow when ever I need to (one is this bass the other is the cheapest rogue they make). Now Its been a while since I played my old gear, which was a carvin 6 string and a nicer hartke amp with the alum 4x10s, but I still remember great tone, good tone, and blah tone. Anyways back to this bass, the tone is pretty flat fingerstyle. There just isn't alot of life in this bass, nor the rogue for that matter but the rogue is a hundred dollars less. The neck wasn't too bad pretty thin, action okay. This one didn't buzz much but the rogue had its places. ALl in all the basses sounded identicaland minus the fret buzzing on the rogue played the same. So my advice if you are starting out go to a music store find a rogue that has a decent neck with no buzz and save the extra hundred and put it towards your next bass. This bass is't worth the extra money even though it is cheap. This bass has no growl or spark in its tone just like a cheap rogue doesn't have any of that.Roger-bdKv7

I have actually sent one of these before and have all the materials to do so again. it comes with the padded case which is also in good condition. based in bristol. but this can be lowered. the strings are standard and, because i wanted the bass as a db substitute, is set high. it’s a much harder-wearing stand, which means the bass is more stable and doesn’t sway (a problem i had with a previous wav bass i owned). the ns stand was awful, so i’ve swapped it for a really solid pearl stand which functions perfectly. i’ve had it 6 months but have changed to a far west bass. it’s the made on a china model but don’t let that put you off, it’s a beautiful instrument. here’s a lovely thing, my ns wav 4 bass.

Overall: I purchased my first bass in 1976. I have owned many of the top notch, well known electric basses and a few acoustic basses.After I sold my last acoustic bass a couple years ago, I was in the market for another and decided to throw all in and purchase this Martin, sight unseen. I was expecting at least decent quality, and I knew if I found the bass lacking, at least I tried. I knew if I bought another "lesser" bass I would be left wondering "what if?"I received this bass mid January. Looking it over it was pretty much everything you would expect from a USA built Martin. I gave it 5 stars in every category except quality, which I gave 4 1/2.I attribute this to the fact the string height was high, and I mean way high. Like cheap pawn shop guitar high. Like had to go out if tune just fretting a string, especially higher up the neck.After careful consideration, I went ahead and pulled the Tusq saddle and gave it the sandpaper treatment to lower the string height. Damn the warranty, I am accustomed to doing most all my work anyway. In fact I've never had one of my personal instruments in a repair shop. To me it's like a soldier and his rifle, you need to know and understand your equipment.Anyway, now to the good part:After the strings were situated closer to the fretboard where they needed to be, I began playing and enjoying this fine instrument. In the couple of weeks I've had it, I can honestly say it's the finest bass or guitar I have ever played let alone owned. If I had to pick just one instrument to keep this would be it, hands down. Currently I have Gibson's, Rickenbackers and Fenders among others (no crazy ultra high end stuff). I would give up any or all just to keep this bass. Why?The ease of play and the sound of this bass, especially unplugged is unlike anything I have ever played. This bass is like a triple shot of adrenaline straight into my psyche. I am doing things with this bass I have never done with any instrument, let alone bass I have ever played.It is such a joy to play, after all these years of not having anything like this I can't imagine not having it. I will never part with this bass.Did I just get lucky with this one? Yes and no. I imagine all of Martin's basses must be this good.As far as the action, I suppose if you bought one from a brick and mortar Martin dealer they would have taken care of the action upon delivery.By the way, the action, the set up at the nut was perfect and I did not have to touch the truss rod adjustment at all.So if you will excuse me, I have to wrap up this review so I can spend some time with my new best friend… my Martin bass…
