Developed by renowned restorer and finisher jeff jewitt, the transtint line of dyes is more versatile than any weve ever seen! transtint dyes, like this dark vintage maple, can be mixed with water for an economical, nonflammable stain or with alcohol for a fast drying, non-grain raising stain. for use as a toner or shader, dyes can be added directly to water-based finishes and solvents to create a perfect match for touch-ups or a unique, customized finish. a 2 oz. bottle yields about 2 quarts of dye-stain. can even be added to: shellac, catalyzed lacquer and varnish, water-based lacquer and polyurethane finishes. not for exterior use.

If you have a small project that doesn't need to match another finish, this is a great product. If, on the other hand have a large project like 15 stairs plus banister bases, it is very difficult to match between batches. I was never able to match the original color and ended up wastig an entire bottle. Tips: 1: Poke a small hole inthe tip (do not cut the tip off). 2: Make small batches to test on the exact wood and exact sanding until you get the exact formula (and log each batch with the mix ratio), then mix the large batch using scaled measurements. 3: Keep the logs in case you need to repair or replace an original finished piece. 4: It is very messy and will ruin any clothes and won't come off of your hands easily. 5: If you are mixing it with a finish (urethane), your last 1-2 coats should not contain any dye, otherwise it will come off when wiped or mopped or gets wet.gary
Very easy to use. Easy to mix with water. You can also put a few drops on a damp cloth and wipe on without diluting for a darker stain application. Another way I've used it is to stain the wood one color and after drying, use another color to stain "streaks" for a beautiful effect. After drying spray a light coat of poly from a rattle can, give a very light sanding, then fill grain as needed according to wood type and desired finish. Then spray with General Finishes High Performance Polyurethane. The end results are spectacular!Steve
