I'm mainly a guitar player dabbling with other instruments. I enjoy the bass. This isn't mt first bass or only bass. But I've waited for one to come along at a good price in the classic Violin shaped McCartney Hoffner bass. Tickled to death from price to overall quaility. I'm playing this through a Fender Rumble bass, and use this for jamming at home. Playing Beatles tunes no less.Mike
I own both a Rogue VB100 and an actual Hofner, so I can easily make the comparison. (I'm a collector, that's the only reason I even own a Hofner). First off, I'm going to risk getting flamed because I am of the belief that the Hofner is possibly the most overrated, overpriced bass you can buy. At almost $3000, it's ridiculously expensive and very limited in versatility. It's tonal pallet is basically the fat, tubby classic tones that we all associate with Paul McCartney. And that's exactly why they're so pricey today, because had he never played one, NOBODY would be playing Hofners today. And remember, he specifically purchased his Hofner back in the day because it was symmetrical AND he couldn't afford a Fender any the time (his words paraphrasing). So they were cheap comparatively to Fender. But not today. Fast forward to the Rogue. In various cover bands I've played in, I have been required to play Beatles songs, so you gotta have that tone and vibe. Took a chance on this little guy and was blown away. I like it better than my Hofner. It's a little heavier, but only in so far as it feels more solid, as the Hofner feels very light and fragile. (We're still talking about a very light bass in the Rogue). The neck, while thin, is still a bit wider and more comfortable to play than the Hofner too. The sunburst finish is OK, not nearly as pretty as the Hofner, but I'll gladly save $2700 to get 95% there in overall vibe. The pickups/tones are actually more powerful than the Hofner, and the low end clarity is better too. And the classic violin shape is still striking today. At this price, you can't afford not to get one to add to your sonic pallet. Happy thumpin!Peter
In the last ten years I have owned three Beatle basses; two Rogues and an Epi Viola. The first VB-100 was fantastic out of the box. A great natural tone that a conventional solid body bass cannot duplicate. To me, it's as close to an acoustic bass as you're ever going to get. The none day after a gig, it slipped off a chair that I had perched it on (I know) and the neck, being extremely delicate, cracked, plus the floating bridge was destroyed as well. I tried to have it fixed but to no avail. The mojo was gone. I sold it later and said never again because it was like owning a literal violin. The Epiphone was my second attempt, mostly because for certain types of music this bass really shines. The problem was we never hit it off. No vibe…nothing. Playing it gave me nothing as I had with the Rogue. So it went away and I swore up and down, NEVER AGAIN! Cue the third act. This spring I thought to myself that I yearned for that big, midrangey tone again. But what if I wasn't lucky enough to hit the jackpot? Oh well, life's short and this bass won't break the bank. A couple of weeks ago this beautiful vintage sunburst violin bass showed up at my door. It's darker than the horrid pics MF has on their website. Purchased a set of LaBella Beatle bass strings and spent a relaxing Sunday getting to know this bass. The factory that has been kicking out the Rogues all these years really has it down. Yeah, you can get a dud tone-wise, but your chances are probably less than you think. The thing is this bass plays and sounds better than the first one I had and way better than the Epi. The neck, while narrow, is as smooth as butter. String spacing is tight, but if you play it for a bit you'll get used to it. Through my Zoom B1ON, I can snare a double bass sound unlike ever before. The VB-100 has a knock on it that it's a one-trick pony. Not his one! Using the tone controls and both pickups, I can coax a number of tones out of it. You owe it to yourself to give it a try.Mike

It's a great $88 guitar, we have guitars upwards of $500 so of course it would not be as good. Well built, tunes easily, buy needs frequent tuning. It looks like a $500.00+ guitar! I've been playing it for hours and the deep bass is so sweet. The action is a tad high but I kind of like it that way. The great sound projection from this bass made me chuckle while I was playing because the bass made a silver cup I have on a wall mounted shelf rattle! Now that's impressive sound projection! I can't wait to plug in this bass to my friend's Ampeg that's a 1X15 ported bass amp. It should be wild! This is a great acoustic-electric bass. I originally purchased it to use as an alternative to plugging in my electric bass. I instantly fell in love with it. It stays in tune. The nut is of appropriate measurements and the frets are greatly positioned. I changed the factory installed strings with some acoustic bass strings and it sounded so nice! Never played a hofner before so didnt know what to expect. The experience with PMT was good. came well packaged 10 out of 10 for them. The bass has nice neck no sharp frets and the ends seem to be dressed nicely. seems well set up and even arrived in tune and the electronics seem good and do what they are supposed to do. There are a couple of small blemishes in the paint but nothing to fret about, however it says its transparent black of which it kind of is on the back, if you catch the light right, so a bit disappointing on that part. The other disappointing thing (and i dont know if this is a thing with all Hofners ) is neck dive. One more thing that makes it look cheap is the quality of the Hofner Logo, it awful. overall though its a nice bass to add to the fleet for a bit of variety.Adrian W.

You hear a lot of bassist look down on ABGs for being not loud enough. This might be an entry model, but it will more than do it's job when no amp is needed. It's much louder than most of the other more expensive acoustic basses. First off, this thing is huge. If you have short arms or small hands, look elsewhere. Might be one step below a guitaron (Mariachi bass) in terms of size. This adds to the volume projection. If Dean could come up with a way to round off the corner where your arm sits, it would make it more comfortable. Had a few cases where my arm started to fall asleep when trying to play sitting down. Just have to experiment with a position that works for you. Finding a case to fit is tricky. Second, the factory strings are terrible, cheap roundwounds that make a lot of string noise. Put some good flatwounds on and it sounds 10 times better. The action is high but that's going to be the case on any acoustic guitar (bass or 6 string) compared to an electric. With flats, it feels closer to an upright bass. You probably won't be able to do many Claypool or Sheehan style licks, but it's not really designed for that. I've done some fingerstyle percussive stuff on it and gotten some cool sounds out of it. The electronics are so-so. You might get a lot of feedback if the volume is really high, but then again, that's outside of its intended use. I've played mine in smaller venues and had no issues. For a simple pick up and jam or wanting a mellow tone deal to go with an acoustic guitar, this is a great buy. Won't set you back too much and the build quality is good. Just know what you are getting and don't expect it do everything your electric bass does as easily.Corb
I've had mine for a while now so here's the long term review. I'm happy with my purchase. I don't think there is a better acoustic bass at this price point and I've tried a lot of them. Of course it's cheaply made, but the craftsmanship is excellent. Fit and finish are great. The fret work is really good. The bass stays in tune, but the tuning machines are already starting to fall apart. I'm looking at replacing them with the lightweight Gotoh's which look identical. The rest of the bass is holding up great. Out of the box it will probably need to be set up. I had to file the nut grooves down about half a mile. The bridge wasn't the same radius as the fingerboard. I belt sanded the top and bottom to get good action. After a setup it does play very well. The action is comparable to a p-bass with no buzzing and no dead frets. It sounds pretty good unplugged. There are no rattles and no buzzing. The notes are clear and well defined and there is a decent amount a deep bass. Unfortunately when plugged in the sound has no clarity and no punch. It just doesn't sound musical. I have not found a way clean it up. Minus one star for the tuning machines, minus one star for the way it sounds plugged in.Fretless J
I wanted an acoustic bass and for me it was between the Ibanez and this one. I decided to go with this Bass and I love it, especially for the price its at!. It has a really solid and, surprisingly, punchy sound without it being plugged in. When it is plugged in, it does give off some feed back but still excellent sound. A little bit of fret buzz at the 17th fret, shouldn't be a big deal unless you play a lot in the area. Neck feels great, not to thick so its really easy to get around. Really light weight. The body looks huge from the picture but its excellent size. Overall I'd recommend it to any bass player that wants a quality sounding acoustic bass without hurting the wallet.Punkbass182

This is the first bass I've ever purchased, I've only played (6 stringed) guitar in the past. This bass is an excellent value for money — it has a great look, and the sound is very good given the price point. The only issue I've experienced is that Rocksmith told me the volume on the instrument is quite low; however, this does not seem to prevent it from hearing the instrument, or being able to tune it correctly. Overall, if you're looking to get into bass for the first time, or moving over from guitar, but are not sure you want to drop $500-$1000 on a bass up front, I would certainly recommend this model. So hey. I’m kinda new at this sort of thing. I did grow up playing music in the bands and orchestra. Mostly woodwinds. I did always want to play some strings. So finally I do. I’ve been at the guitar for a little while now. And it’s very exciting to find an opportunity to study bass. This instrument seems very fundamental and good to me. So I’m excited about it. Good deal for starting out. Thing is, as I’ve been practicing,… I just kinda noticed that I can’t seem to get the High A note to speak as well as I’d like. I mean everything sounds great. Overall: Overall, it has great tone for its size; however, out of the box, the frets were extremely sharp at the neck's edge. and I had to do a little filing of my own. Also, I had to put a chrome plate around the 1/4" jack. It was my fault for leaving a cord plugged in while placing it on a stand for the first time. Doing so, caused the jack to press into the body and slightly crack it. The aftermarket plate corrected my issue.Thomas
Overall: Ordered through zZounds, first one came in damaged. Easy return policy made getting a replacement simple and painless. Now on to the bass itself. Right out of the box, it has a nice playable action. No fret buzz problems anywhere on the neck. Notes ring out clean and clear. I purchased it just to add some sound into casual campfire type jam circles. It can project enough to match an acoustic guitar if you pluck it good enough. Honestly projects a little less than I had hoped for, but it does the job none the less. Not the smoothest playing instrument I’ve ever picked up, but it’s comfortable enough to play. Built in tuner is super convenient and accurate. I would highly recommend it for any casual setting, and it’s even come in handy for recording little songs at home without having to invest in a bass amp.Josh

Its a little by chance what you get from mex. fenders in terms of craftsmanship and details. Mine has a little dent and a little gap between neck and body but it is sturdy. Fret work is not like americans. Tone wise and playability is good. I like the look of pau ferro wood. Neck shape is comfy not like 70s baseball bat p bass more like 70s j bass. The orange color is the reason i pick this one, fender changing colors every two three years so if you have this color in mind go for it. Much much better in real than pictures. Overall, if you need a good practice/little jamming bass its a good alternative. Instead of squiers go for this. I have sire as well, if you dont like/need active preamp simple is the best. Also, this new pickups are good, have good bass and midrange not scooped like some american pickups. One final thing, I've tried couple of player series before ordering this, some of them is not well at all in build quality. So, it is a little surprise what you get, check after you buy it and then decide to keep it or not. Have fun..
Purchased the Fender Player Jazz bass. Overall great looks and sound, but some quality issues from the Fender Mexico factory (not Andertons' fault): – First bass had very clear weird uneven blemish under the varnish on the sunburst body. Not awful, but if I was in-store I would never have chosen that particular item. Returned and swapped by Andertons, no quibbles. Second bass arrived. Overall happy, sounds great, but still a few issues with quality control and design. – Control plate was missing 2 screws and was moving around – how does that get through Fender quality control? Replacement screws sent free of charge by Andertons. – Nut has not been slotted correctly – high G must have been passed through a machine and slipped, string is clearly a couple of mm too close to fretboard edge and you can see the failed first pass. Doesn't really affect playability, but is annoying and I will get it corrected at some point. Again, points to poor quality control. – Fretboard (Pau Ferro) is really thin – on the Player series, at least. Neck fret dot markers in white are half over the mid-dark fretboard, half over the light maple neck. Very hard to see in low light levels. OK, so they're just an indicator for position, but the design isn't great. So overall, the bass sounds great and Andertons service was very good. …and falls in love. Let me start by saying I actually have owned one other P-Bass. I had a 50s reissue Precision, but honestly the neck was just too thick for my liking after years of playing Jazz basses. Honestly, it felt thicker than the neck on my Yamaha 5-string. So, I picked this bass up after always dancing around getting what would be considered a more standard P-Bass. I have a 70s Jazz with a ton of modifications, I've had quite a few other brands of basses, but I wanted to see what the fuss was about. I ordered this a few weeks ago, and have been very pleasantly surprised. The action was pretty good out of the box. I adjusted it a bit, made a few tiny tweaks to the intonation, and now it's super smooth. And, on the pickups, let me say it's a great sounding bass. Pickups are clear, bass sounds great. I play through a little Ampeg Micro cabinet. Earlier this week, I bought some Flats to throw on it (because that's what you do with a P-bass, right?) and now it's quickly becoming one of my favorite instruments to jam with. It really cuts through the mix when playing in a group. I see why folks really love the sound of a precision. My Jazz still has it's place, but man, I really like the sound of this bass. The Player P is a great value for what you get. I've never owned an older MIM, but I research the heck out of pretty much any purchase I make, and it looks like Fender really stepped it up with this rendition of their MIM Precision basses. Good tone out of the box, no discernible pickup noise, good action, a beautiful neck, and a Tidepool Blue finish that just shines and shines.Dennis F

I purchased my left-handed Glarry Jazz bass back in July of 2020 as a way of keeping occupied during the lockdown, after nearly 2 years I'm still as blown away as the day it first arrived. This bass is a *beast*! It sounds incredible, very little adjustments were needed right out of the box, I lowered the action on one string a little & that's it. The thing that really impresses me in an ongoing way is this bass *insists* on remaining completely in tune almost indefinitely, I have a digital, highly-accurate tuner & this instrument rarely strays from being in tune even after lengthy practice. I find myself wondering how Glarry can possibly make money here. I've also, based on my experience with the bass, purchased a left handed strat copy in a matching finish, & also a Glarry kid's drumset, and am completely happy with my purchases. Thank you Glarry, you guys rock!
After hearing a lot of positives about Glarry basses I decided to take the plunge and order one. Unfortunately, I cannot report that I find it to be an amazing value as some have reported. The main problem is the neck. Out of the box the action was set quite high and the usual setup adjustments reveal that the frets are in serious need of a level and dressing. Besides the unpleasant fret fart outs, I notice a fair amount of odd resonances that seems to be originating from the neck on various notes. I can't tell if a good fret leveling would eliminate them or if it is something related to the truss rod internally. The truss rod does work, but turns WAY more easily than any other bass I've ever owned. (Probably 2 dozen over 40 plus years.) The body is good, finish is nice, and the electronics and hardware are serviceable. For the hundred-ish I spent, I'll keep it as a mod bass and replace the neck. Be forewarned: the original neck is a VERY chunky P-Bass width and nowhere near the normal streamlined Jazz Bass neck found on most Jazz basses and Jazz bass copies. Not sure this would be a good starter bass without taking it in for a good setup and fret leveling. In my neck of the woods that would cost about $150.00. Perhaps a better alternative would be to see what you can get in the $200- $300 range that comes ready to play out of the box. As always, YMMV.
I liked the affordable price and the look of the blue sunburst jazz bass. My plan was to completely modify it which I did. I sanded and stained the neck a darker color, applied several coats of polyurethane and a final coat of paste wax. The electronics were upgraded to alpha pots, braided wires and alnico5 pickups, a new wilkinson brass saddle bridge, black machine tuners, bone nut, black jazz bass volume/tone knobs, flat wound strings and a tortoise shell pickguard. While this instrument is completely fine for a beginner, I am more of a seasoned player and was up to the challenge of a fun project. Could I suggest maybe selling only bare body and neck without parts at a lower price which people could build their own instrument to their personal taste? Also, the internet is a wonderful place for information if someone knows where to look, but a beginner might not understand how or even if they need to adjust their truss rod or bridge saddles. Perhaps an included instruction booklet might also be useful as these instruments are catering towards beginners. I also modified a Glarry white P bass in a similar way but less extensive as the jazz. I had a lot of fun with these projects.

I found this guitar to be very very high-quality the neck feels great the controls are very stable in the highs and lows in fadeouts of the volume and tone pots are fantastic. The tiny switch is fantastic because I can switch in and out of phase between the pick ups which equals more tone options. The frets are a little sharp and will need filing down in the base will need to be set up out of the box other than that the strings are perfect and do not sound hollow or old. My only complaint was the frets and how sharp they were/are…Since string height is subjective, I will only say that I liked the way mine was setup-high enough that there were no fret buzzes. I like the organic tone and wish it were louder acoustically but when amped through my Fender Rumble 25 or 200, the sound still maintains the acoustic qualities I wanted it for. So I'm cautious because I've wanted an acoustic bass for quite some time and when I saw the Ibanez AEB10E and it low price, I decided to break my VOW and order that damn bass…lol. So now I'm hopeful because their were a lot of people who wrote great reviews, which nudged me to make the purchase. Now that I've had it for more than two weeks, I'm pleasantly surprised because this plays extremely well, I have a little fret buzz but I can tell that it's not going to take much effort to adjust the truss rod!!!!Joseph

I have an electric bass, but wanted something to sit on the couch with and play along with something I could potentially use to record some cool bass licks to use for some of the music I produce. I have to say, given that I didn't play the bass beforehand and just ordered it online, I got extremely lucky and landed on the exact bass I was looking for. The first thing I noticed is how easy it is to play. I feel like even though I'm not a very experience bass player it's not too much of a challenge to play the licks I'm trying to play. Just the way it is setup by default makes it easy for me and my big hands to hit the notes I want without accidentally striking or muting a string next to what I'm going for. The second thing I noticed is how great it sounds. I'm sure it would depend on the venue and type of ensemble, but I feel like this bass produces enough volume to be viable for playing unplugged next to a nice guitar that also has a good bit of volume. The tone is pretty well balanced too, I think the spruce top gives it a little more upper harmonics than you might expect, which is nice since it seems to have a little more presence as a result. I'm sure you probably don't need to hear this but the whole bass screams quality. It's gorgeous, and yes, the wood is lighter than it looks in the pic, but that's not a bad thing. There's no real imperfections anywhere in mine, every part of it looks and feels great. I have a number of acoustic type guitars – both steel and nylon strung. When playing these I rarely strum – it's a finger style combination of rock, flamenco, folk, blues and jazz ( a real mixture). The first thing I did was to change the strings (D'Addario Silk & Steel). As a result this little Fender beauty has turned into an excellent parlour guitar: it's responsive, lovely to play and remarkably loud for its size. Build quality is good and the sound projects well. If you're a chord strummer, I wouldn't suggest that the Sonoran is for you – but it responds superbly to finger style playing. It's subtle and responsive. For the money, it's very, very good. And of course, it's very, very easy to lug around. Love it!Gillian B.
Pretty nice sounding instrument! Way less money than most solid wood, small bodied shorter scale guitars, & stacks up decently against “higher end” offerings. As a traditionalist, the onboard electronics were an annoying detraction, but in practice the pickup system sounds far more natural than I was expecting. And as a couch/practice guitar, having a tuner on the instrument is handy, I’ll grudgingly admit. If I were the type to plug in an acoustic on stage, I’d get good use out of these features. There are a few other general things that caught my attention, listed in no particular order. The dynamic range is an interesting departure from typical full scale acoustics. It’s quieter when finger picked softly, but as loud or louder when dug into with a pick. Definitely doesn’t sound small when played with authority, & generally has great resonance. I’ve yet to try lighter strings, but with 12 gauge phosphor bronze, it doesn’t feel too slinky or incredibly different than a longer scale length acoustic. I do find it a tad more comfortable, but not a night & day difference. The only lesser aspect is mostly down to the stock setup. Action was a little on the high side, & the G# fret under the low E string was a little high, so G chords buzzed on that string. This doesn’t detract from my over all impression, as I’m imagining most folks buying a decent instrument will end up setting it up & leveling fretwork to taste. All in all, mine’s a very nice acoustic guitar by any measure, & its sound punches way above its weight class in terms of cost. I dig it.WJJ
This Fender guitar is awesome. Out of the box it is almost perfectly set up. The intonation is off just by a little bit and only with 2 or 3 strings. The sound seems a little washed while playing chords, but single notes are loud and clear. All the frets have edge treatment, nice and smooth. The synthetic bone used for the nut and bridge are way better than plastic, allowing for a long sustain. The guitar could use better tuning keys, but the guitar stays in tune good enough. Over all my guitar was built well, and I'm glad it sounds good, too. I would recommend this guitar for all beginner guitar players because of the sound quality, and anyone else who don't have the money for their dream guitar.Tim

Right out of the box this bass sounded good. Dean sold me. Played a little venue at a friends house and got lots of complements on the sound and looks. Sure made me feel good. People asked to sign my bass and made me think how cool that would be? Maybe after some wear and tear that will happen. Can't say enough about this bass. What a find, really. Only been learning for over a year and maybe I don't know what I'm talking about but for now I'm talking Dean. Being a beginner at 63 sure is fun. Rock On kids cause that's how I feel….wunschy
This is a decent package for anyone wanting to learn the bass guitar. The bass guitar holds tune fairly well and is good quality. The amp that is included in the package is average at best for what it is, nothing impressive but good for solo practicing. The instrument cable is low quality without a right angle plug. The packaging is low quality and the guitar head was damaged in shipping as a result of the inadequate packaging. Sam Ash took immediate attention to my claim on the damage, their customer service is awesome. Overall is it a good bass guitar package.Aubrey
I'm an older ex weekend warrior who has played in bands for years. I've owned many other basses including Fender P-bass, Hamer Cruisebass, and Carvin LB-70 to name a few. I've been out of the music scene for awhile but really missed having a bass around to mess around with so I ordered this one in the satin finish. I knew what I was getting because I had been to Dean's website where they have accurate pics of this bass. I wasn't disappointed! This bass is an amazing value for the money. The tone is great right out of the box. Action is right where I like it. No fret buzz as long as you are fretting properly. I did change the strings right away to black nylon tape wounds. They lend a smooth attack (almost like a double bass) and are super easy on the fingers yet still get that P-bass like growl if you open the tone knob up. Construction is very good especially for the money, fit and finish is great except for the fret work. I'll need to file down the fret ends as they are a bit too long for the (nice) rosewood fretboard. They aren't sharp or dangerous so it could be worse and using proper technique you'd hardly notice it. The only other gripe is the tuners. They look nice but don't hold tuning for long periods of time. I end up having to re-tune the bass nearly every day. The tuner on the G string could be smoother as turning tension goes from tight to loose and back to tight as it turns. These are really minor complaints for such a low cost bass. The finish is really good. It appears they put a matching basswood veneer on the top and back so you can't even see the slab joints. I wouldn't hesitate to take this on stage, it looks that good with the black tuners, bridge, knobs, and strings (in my case). The neck is nice and thin and fairly fast with a satin finish on the back of the neck. The electronics are way above average for this price range. The pickup, volume and tone knobs work together very well to give a wide variety of tones.VTbassman

As a relative newbie to bass playing I thought I'd invest in something a bit better than my basic P bass. As soon as I picked it up it felt light and comfortable. I like compactness of the guitar and how easily could find the strings and frets when practicing . . which makes my learning process quite a bit easier. The sound quality is both good and varied with Hofners pick up set up. The bass just looks good too, which I know doesn't influence the playing experience etc but it makes you want to just pick it up and play. Overall I'm very pleased with my purchase and look forward to many an hour practicing . . . and maybe even making some progress too.Duncan S.
I got this exact bass in green here from Musician's Friend (stupid deal of the day). I have played about 20 or more live shows with it send it definitely holds up.. it has a very big sound and is extremely lightweight, which is fantastic because we move around a lot. The craftsmanship is pretty good, probably adequate to that of the Epiphone viola, but with a cooler color. I constantly get compliments on the color. The only thing I'd say I would have liked better is if they had put a little more quality or craftsmanship into the control panel. It's not horrible at all, it definitely does the trick, it just kind of looks plain Jane. I would suggest switching out the volume and tone knobs with the vintage style tea cup knobs. That's what I did, and it really helps dress the bass up.Arrow
I'm a keyboard player getting back into playing bass after decades away, so I did a fair amount of research before this purchase, and I'm glad I did. There is a very really difference in quality between the 'Contemporary' and 'Ignition' Hofners, both in terms of finish and sound – The contemporary has better sustain and more 'richness' in the bass end. If you are wanting either something approaching an 'electric upright' or a classic McCartney sound, then the Contemporary will get you nearer than the Ignition – it's not in the 'German Made' class but unless you've got 2 grand to spend… Mine arrived on time and well set up.
