For the price £399 this guitar is excellent value. It plays pretty much as you would want straight out of the box. Just a quick wipe over with a damp cloth & cleaned the strings with fast fret, The playing action was pretty much where I want it & the intonation just needed very minor adjustments on 2 strings. I bought it for the neck thru construction and the finish which is quite stunning and very well done. The "Duncan Design" pick-ups are crappy, muddy and middy. Replaced them with "REAL" Seymour Duncan "Pearly Gates" and it sounds great now. The Floyd sits too low in the pocket (unlike my Charvel's do) poor engineering on Jackson's behalf. You can't get to the allen heads when you change strings because they sit so low in the pocket. You actually have to change one string at a time or insert the whammy bar and physically push it down to raise the rear of the Floyd so you can access the allen heads that hold the strings to the bridge. I have 17 guitars and this one is hands down the hardest guitar to change strings on I have ever owned. If Jackson would put better pick-ups in this model, and re-engineer how the Floyd Rose is mounted, it would be a lot more popular, but like most Jackson guitars priced under $1,500 they opt for the cheap electronics which in my opinion has been the case with every Jackson I have owned, you need to change the pick-ups and pots. This is a sweet guitar. The sustain is excellent, quite a difference from any bolt on neck guitar. I have a 1991 Ibanez 540SLTD, it is an excellent guitar. Been playing that for nearly 3 decades and its still my main guitar. This Jackson SL3X Soloist is just as playable. The neck is very comfortable from top to bottom. The Duncan designed pickups are very good too. Make no mistake, this is a shred guitar through and through. Can it do evreything else in between, like classic rock, jazz, country? Absolutely. You can dial in just about any sound needed. The pickups seem to have good output, but not insane, which i like. I also own a late model Ibanez RG350DX, with the infinity pickups. Those pickups, especially the bridge, are really loud, and overly distorted. I find that i have to roll the volume back to keep clarity. These pickups in the Jackson have good clarity. The neck and middle hot rails pickups are sweet. Artificial harmonics sing everywhere. The Floyd Rose special seems to stay in tune good as well. The fine tuners are a little gritty feeling, not anything wrong with em, but not silky smooth. They probably will get smoother as time and use allows them to break in. The hardware seems good. Solid tuning heads. Nice adjustment of knobs and pickup selector switch. The finish, neon orange, is flawless. Binding on neck and headstock is nicely done as well. The only issue i had with mine was fretbuzz on the first fret, 5th and 4th strings. Quick turn of the truss rod nut to add a little relief and reset the bridge height took care of that. This is a very fast neck to riff and shred with. Of course its great for slow playing, open chords etc… but, if Klingons are around, Warp Factor Five! Neck through Jackson Soloist, its a spaceship in disguise as an electric guitar. My Ibanez 540SLTD has an amazingly fast and thin neck, this Jackson is without a doubt on par with that, plus 2 more frets/ Jackson has better sustain and there is no sub 4 a thruneck.Freddy F

I put a set of TV Jones in my Les Paul because I wanted something different. The TV pickups certainly deliver that 'different' quality. I tried a set of TV Plus in the bridge and TV neck, and I also treid a set of Supertrons. I found the Supertrons too metalic sounding for that guitar. The TV Plus and the TV neck sounded very cool, but they have a highy specialized, unique sound with a fairly weak output. This did not work for me on two levels – 1) I could not dial in a sound I liked messing with my amp rig EQ 2) I'm not sure that the Les Paul was the best guitar for these pickups. I listened to a lot of YouTubes and they sound great in semi hollow guitars, but I didn't like them in my Les Paul Traditional. That does not mean that you won' like them. They definately deliver a unique sound that can be your signature sound if you spend some time tailoring your amp rig to that pickup. I just didn't want to adjust my amp set up as regards that particular Les Paul. I loved the pickups, just not for that particular guitar – the output was too low, but the sound was cool. The Supertrons had higher output, but they were harsh sounding to my ears..gargoil_fetus

I was expecting vintage-looking hardware and the nostalgia of Fender's glorious past with the tone of a Mexican-made Fender. If this is what Mexico can do, they've just set the bar quite high for themselves. It competes with all of my MIA Fenders for overall component, finish and build quality. Simply gorgeous instrument which looks much better than these pictures, which really don't do it justice! I get the feeling this line is somebody very important at Fender's baby because I'm telling you there's a lot of pride put into this guitar. I've never done an intonation test on a Fender without having to make several adjustments. This thing was set up PERFECTLY. The aged-nickel Strat-style bridge is familiar and easy to adjust. The vintage chrome tuners require you to clip the strings and insert the end straight down into the middle of the peg but your reward for this extra work is a guitar that stays in tune much longer! The neck is slightly fatter than your standard Tele with a natural taper and excellent playability for those with bigger hands such as myself. The synthetic bone nut is probably the only thing I will replace but that's just my preference and there wouldn't be a thing wrong with keeping it on. I have the aged natural finish which is the only proper finish for this model if you ask me but if you take exception to the way mine looks you won't find anything wrong with the way it sounds. These pickups are something else! Really the big surprise of the whole package. Open, aggressive, responsive to pick attack. More mid-range than a standard Tele that's for sure but with plenty of low-end and sparkle and highly adjustable. You will find the tone you're looking for but I must say this guitar shines when played more aggressively like filthy southern rock or Texas blues but can also handle punk, hair metal and more with its awesome trademark growl! The same pickup can put out silk and butter for jazz, country or folk with a simple change of picking style.TheSparky

These tuners will not accept heavy strings! Fender does not publish this info but after a little experimenting it seems that the diameter of the string hole in these tuners is about 0.46, so the heaviest standard set of strings you can put on this guitar is 0.10 – 0.46, this is completely unacceptable. I had to replace these immediately, while I do like the replacement tuners a bit better the stock tuners seemed fine and if I could get my preferred stings in them I would have kept them (replaced with Kluson 6-In-Line Revolution Series F-Mount Tuners – great tuners). When I unboxed this Tele I immediately saw fret sprout. The fret ends themselves were nicely contoured and not sharp, but the tang of each fret was poking out. It wasn't enough to break the finish but it made for an unpleasant playing experience. I called Musicians Friend about this and was given the option of returning it and was told that I would be responsible for shipping costs. I sent Fender and email and they were quick to respond and let me know that all their guitars have a 90 day warranty (thanks Fender!). I was able to take it to a Fender authorized repair shop and had the fret sprout addressed free of charge. While I had the guitar in for service I had the new tuners installed, a new nut installed and the saddles replaced. Because I use heavier strings I do anticipate some issues with the nut of any guitar, but surprisingly I think this nut would have worked after getting worn in just a bit. I knew I might have a hard time with these stock saddles. I do a lot of palm muting and those little screws grate my hands after a while. I don't hold anything against Fender or MS for the saddles or nut, I knew those might be issues for me based on my preferences. The stock pickups and electronics are actually pretty good! I bought this planning to replace them with the new cunife pickups, which I did, but I'm not convinced that the cunife are that much better.MCY

I only played a friend's genuine 1975 Tele Deluxe for a few minutes once, but I have other Telecasters, including a U.S.-made 60s reissue, and this Vintera 70s Tele Deluxe is fantastic-super comfortable to play, great sounding, and beautiful just to look at. A bit on the heavy side, but I don't mind that at all. If you want a Tele sound that approximates the old 70s Wide Range humbuckers, this one does it better than a lot of previous reissues did (and now even you can switch these pickups out with Fender's new CuNiFe Wide Range humbuckers if you're really determined to get as close as possible to the sound of the original pickups). I've always preferred rosewood fingerboards but this maple fretboard feels great to me and doesn't have the stickiness I used to experience with maple fretboards in decades past. The guitar is super solid-as one reviewer wrote somewhere else, it's "built like a tank." I love the vintage white finish, which is just gorgeous and eye-catching. The two humbuckers blend beautifully in the middle position, and the sound breaks up nicely through a good tube amp. (I have a Vibrolux reissue, and this guitar pairs with it better than I expected.) Give one a try-I bought mine based on many good reviews of this Vintera model and have been very pleasantly surprised ever since I received it. Very hard to put it down!Christopher

I'm glad to have this guitar in my small collection of guitars. It's built and designed well. The EMG active pickups it is equipped with is the most popular combination used by big name guitarists in their music. (85 & 81 series) The neck is like nothing I have ever played before, so comfortable, a very nice change from my loved LP.buffrt66

The finish looks great, neck feels great, multiscale is comfortable, fret work is great, came set up out of the box. I was completely happy until I plugged it in and it just didn't work. I'm sure this is a 1 in 500 instance. The guitar itself was great. If you want a super playable 8 string with a neck that feels as accessible as most 7 strings….this guitar is a great pick. I just can't give any further review on the Jackson blade pickups that replaced the EMGs that were in previous models.Andy

I've had this guitar for a few weeks now. I use it mostly for metal, but have also used it for classic rock songs during a gig. Before I get into the bad stuff, let me just say this guitar is awesome. This guitar was absolutely awful when it arrived. Aside from Fedex taking a .75" chip out of the body, it wasn't set up in the slightest. The original strings are way way too thin on the low end, the action is all over the place, and the neck had a pretty gnarly back bow. That being said, switching to heavier strings, setting up the neck and actions it is one of the best 8 strings I have played. I was a little concerned going with the passive pickups, but they have plenty of bite for heavy tones while providing plenty of clarity for clean parts. This guitar plays and sounds great. If you're thinking about getting it, do it!S.

Some people say prs just “ripped off a strat and put an ugly headstock on it” Dude fender could NEVER achieve this quality. Strats are awesome, and obviously inspired this instrument, but I’ve played 60’s and 70’s strats, and modern American strats in the silver sky price range. Not a single one has EVER had the response, the feel, the tone, or the magic that this guitar has. I loved the rosewood prs and was about to purchase one until they announced the maple fretboard. Had to wait about 6 months on preorder and it was more than worth every penny and every bit of waiting. The pickups have such a beautiful vintage feel. And it is warm, instead of “ice picky” like some strats can get some times. The tone knobs on this guitar are more responsive than any guitar I’ve ever played, and give all 5 pickup voicings multiple tonal shapes. The bridge system is comfortable, very well made. The guitar is light, comfortable, and can handle such a beautiful variety of genres and tones. Fretboard is like BUTTERRRRR when you bend notes. It’s addicting. And I love the aesthetic of the hollow birds. If you’re thinking about getting one just do it.JG

First off, I've been a bit of a Fender fanboy for a long time. Like many people, I have often scoffed at the idea of paying ultra-lux money for a copy of a strat. But this past weekend I went to my local GC to play the Fiore and, MCCarty and some CU24s, some more Fenders and even a couple of Les Pauls. After two hours in the room, I came home with an Orion Green SS. I just simply could not stop playing it. So comfortable to hold and play, once my hand adjusted to the neck shape. But the tone immediately grabs you as being full and round, bright enough, and not nearly as overly-harsh as my Am Pro2 can be. Build quality and finish was excellent, and this thing was so fresh that buffing compound is still coming to the surface after playing. Fantastic guitar that probably won't make me sell off my Fenders, but definitely inspires and excites me to play. So happy I finally got one.Jason

This was my first Jackson product purchase. I was absolutely impressed with the quality of the instrument at this price point. I have purchased other higher priced guitars that weren't as nice as this. I can definitely recommend and will probably be looking to purchase others.busmech70

The Kelly Bird looks drop dead gorgeous and sounds absolutely thunderous. It's tone and tone shaping ability is amazing. Clean, gritty with some OD, or even some weird solo synth preset you never use on your effects- all sound like you handed the bass to a pro. It has enough punch to scare the dog but also enough top end to play high. The neck is just wonderful. Sanded from the factory without that sticky shellac on cheaper instruments. The fretboard perfectly laid out and the frets properly rounded. The fit and finish is top notch stage quality level. Stock strings are pretty good and it came to me almost perfectly in tune. I love this guitar. From a tonal standpoint it scores top marks. But whoever designed the body has never even held a guitar. The neck dive is just ridiculous. I've had basses that dived before like Warlocks and Mockingbirds, but the Kelly blows them all away in the sheer speed and violence this neck plummets to Earth. It's only saving grace is that it is light so having to hold the thing up with your fretting hand is possible, but ungainly. But for the pick player- it's a challenge. I've seen Megadeth live and Dave Ellefson's bass doesn't dive when he lets go of it. Mine dives like someone yelled 'Incoming! I ended up shoving tire wheel weights in the electronics box until the bass was half again as heavy– and it still dives, just more slowly now. You'd have to add enough weight that the thing is uncomfortable to completely eliminate the dive. Next I am going to hang weight off the rear strap lock. It's silly that I should have to do all this just to make it stay put. I expect neck dive on these body shapes, but the Kelly takes it to another level. Sitting down is no better. The body slides to the outside of your knee, putting the nut somewhere in the next time zone from your body. It is like playing a Steinberger bass, despite those being small you have a long reach to the nut. As a functional guitar body, the Kelly Bird is terrible. Standing or sitting- it's badly shaped and badly balanced. But man, does it look great. Because it sounds so good, I can't give it anything but high marks for actual playing. But only after I have had to resort to frankly silly fixes to try to make it more playable in the first place. Hands down wins the gold medal for neck dive. Still a great bass sound, still love to play it, still think it's the best sounding bass I've ever had. Just have to accept it's faults like any lady you fall in love with.thesollylama

This thing shreds.. came set up to play right out of the box. The Seymour Parallel Axis trembucker gives you all the gain and tone you could ask for out of a guitar like this.. ebony fretboard and thin neck make playing this thing a breeze.Craig
