Loved the look, price, sound, and feel of this guitar. Tried it out in the store and was ready to buy the floor model, but luckily I asked for a 9V battery to test the electronics at the counter. Oddly the battery port fits fine into the guitar when empty, but the moment you put a battery in it it will not stay shut and pops open rendering your electronics useless. Me and the sales rep at the front figured this was had to be a fluke and he ordered a new one to be delivered to my house. Four days later it arrived. I played it for about an hour out of the box without issue (set up was great, sounded great acoustic) and then I decied to check the electronics. Sure enough, the exact same issue occured when I tried to fit a 9V in the battery port. When a battery was actually in it, it would not stay shut. No tuner, no electronics. Ten minutes later I was back at my local GC. The tech inspected it an came to the same conclusion as I did after trying 5 different brand batteries to see if that made a difference- it's defective. He recommended I return it and try another product. In short it plays nice, sounds nice, and looks nice but if it happened on 2 guitars it has to be happening on more of them. I'm sure you could duck tape it or find a way to keep it closed but this should not be an issue on a $350+ guitar. 3 stars.Ryan

I purchased this guitar last year after seeing it in the "Open Box" listings. The photos were not clear but it was freight damaged in several places on the top and sides. BIG cracks. MF sold it me at cost. My guitar tech repaired the cracks which took a couple of weeks but didn't charge much for the repairs. When I finally played it after it was set up it was AMAZING. Even at the regular price point it's a steal. Blows Martins right off the stage. If buying it, like any other instrument, it needs to be professionally set up for it to play right and sound good. My tech found no other issues other than the freight damage. He agrees with me that it's an amazing instrument. If need be I would buy another without any hesitation.Sid
I plat solo with vocals in concerts, at church both solo and with a band, at sing-alongs, song-writing, jamming, Just about everywhere with and without amplification and sound modelling. I live in Pennsylvania quite near to a famous well established major acoustic guitar manufacturer. Most of my friends own guitars of that brand. But when they play my Artwood guitars they look at their CFMs with a jaundiced eye. Compared to their "auditorium" size X models my grand concert size Artwoods are equal to and in most cases superior to theirs. Both have solid sitka spruce tops chrome tuners and Fishman electronics. Mine have rosewood fretboards and bridges; theirs are made out of black plasticized paper materials called richlite and coriian. Mine have bone nuts and saddles and theirs have plastic ones. Mine have laminated mahogany WOOD back and sides; theirs have some kind of synthetic laminate material (Formica perhaps?). Mine have black and ivory perfling with mock tortoise shell bindings; theirs are unbound. Theirs were made in Mexico, where making quality stringed instruments is a 500 year long tradition; mine were made in China where quality stringed instruments have been made continuously for over three thousand years. Their guitars play well and sound good. Mine play and sound even better and cost hundreds less. QUESTION: Why pay extra Benjamins just for a name?Cat
I am a beginner (able to play only a few chords at this point). I find this guitar fairly easy to play. The neck feels good in the hand and the matte finish makes it easy to slide the fretting on the neck. The craftsmanship is very good. My only complaint is that one side of the back on my guitar is noticeably darker than the other (which is why I deducted one star). The finish looks and feels almost like smoothly sanded raw wood. Don't buy this guitar if you are wanting something flashy. Overall, I think it is a good value.Dennis

I love the look of figured ash. I realize it can sometimes be sort of gaudy and over-the-top. That said, I loved the first guitar I received after I placed my order. It had lots of the swirls and 'bubbles' I expect from this wood. I previously owned a 6 string Ibanez with figured ash, a little darker in hue, and had always loved its appearance. But the onboard tuner of the first guitar I received did not work. By the way, the tuner should work without the guitar being hooked up to an amplifier. When I contacted Ibanez, they e-mailed me back that some of their acoustic-electric guitars have tuners that only work when plugged into an amplifier – this completes the circuit. I could not get a straight answer as to whether that was true for this particular guitar. I wanted to keep the guitar, as I've said I liked the look of it, so I contacted the local authorized repair facility to look into having it repaired under warranty. They told me that they have trouble getting parts from Ibanez and that it would be best for me to send the guitar in and exchange it. I contacted Musicians Friend and they e-mailed me a return label. The replacement guitar I received is not as 'showy' as the one I returned. The wood grain looks more like typical wood grain, no 'bubbles' or swirls on the top or back although there is some of that on the sides. It's probably for the best, as I said this wood can sometimes look a little gaudy. But for now I am a little disappointed in the appearance. That is the trouble with ordering online, but no stores seem to have this guitar in stock. Anyway, the tuner on this one works fine and the sound is very good. Some people have complained that it's a little quiet – sounds plenty loud to me, but then I don't play in public, just at home. For the price, you can't beat this guitar. The first one of these I ordered had bad frets and had to be sent back. After waiting four months, I finally received the replacement since these were on back order for quite a while. The second guitar came with a terrible setup. The strings were literally laying on the frets since the truss rod was over tightened. Also, the strings that came on the guitar were noticeably played and worn, which was strange. After adjusting the truss rod and putting fresh strings on the guitar, it sounds and plays great! The fret edges are a bit sharp, but I don't mind too much considering the price of the instrument. Overall this is a great guitar for a great price, especially on sale, just factor in the cost of a setup if you're not handy with setting up a truss rod on your own.Kevin
I bought this guitar based on hearing similar Ibanez acoustics, and the 35 reviews that seem overwhelmingly positive. The guitars construction is very nice, and it's a unique looking acoustic. Craftsmanship appears to be solid. When I unpacked it, all was well. However, I was a bit disappointed in the sound once I tuned up. I thought the sound was thin, and not as loud as a similarly priced Breedlove 6 string I purchased a few years ago. I'm going to try different strings, and the high G popped within a couple of days of purchased. The guitar sounds great plugged into an amp, and has an on board tuner and EQ. No case. Overall a good guitar for the price, but I would prefer something with a warmer sound. I'm hoping strings other than D'Addario, and some aging make this guitar sound better.rollinover

I'm .a classical guitarist with a healthy performance career, and have taught at several colleges. I haven't really played steel string guitars seriously in over a decade. I used to own a couple of higher end instruments, but sold them off years ago to buy an archlute. I've been toying with the idea of getting back into playing steel string for a few years now, but haven't pulled the trigger. Growing up, Ibanez wasn't a name I'd have even considered – especially not for an acoustic. But, over the years, I've been impressed by their hollow body guitars for their price. So, when I first saw this guitar pop up on the Deal of the Day, I was intrigued. I passed it up a few times before I finally decided to buy it. I figured, ~$250 for a solid top instrument isn't too terrible to spend even if I haven't played it. Worst case scenario, I could probably resell it and make my money back. I love it. I won't say it competes with a high end guitar – it can't, and that's not what it's meant to do – but it's a deal even at the normal asking price. I would say it competes with guitars twice it's price in terms of sound. I don't love the neck shape, but I also haven't played anything but classical guitars for a long time, so it might just be a readjustment. The tuners are tight, but I think maybe the gear ratio is a bit low, so I may replace them. Getting them in tune takes a little more than I'm used to, but once they're in tune, they hold very well. Out of the box, the set up is decent, but the intonation isn't perfect. It's definitely worth having it set up. I'm pretty sure the saddle on mine is plastic (though the nut is definitely bone). All in all, for the price, I'd give it 5 stars, but considering I think it's an instrument that could easily be worth more, I'd like to see some of those minor details improved, even if it means the price is increased a bit.Stringsalive

I purchased this guitar last year after seeing it in the "Open Box" listings. The photos were not clear but it was freight damaged in several places on the top and sides. BIG cracks. MF sold it me at cost. My guitar tech repaired the cracks which took a couple of weeks but didn't charge much for the repairs. When I finally played it after it was set up it was AMAZING. Even at the regular price point it's a steal. Blows Martins right off the stage. If buying it, like any other instrument, it needs to be professionally set up for it to play right and sound good. My tech found no other issues other than the freight damage. He agrees with me that it's an amazing instrument. If need be I would buy another without any hesitation.Sid
I plat solo with vocals in concerts, at church both solo and with a band, at sing-alongs, song-writing, jamming, Just about everywhere with and without amplification and sound modelling. I live in Pennsylvania quite near to a famous well established major acoustic guitar manufacturer. Most of my friends own guitars of that brand. But when they play my Artwood guitars they look at their CFMs with a jaundiced eye. Compared to their "auditorium" size X models my grand concert size Artwoods are equal to and in most cases superior to theirs. Both have solid sitka spruce tops chrome tuners and Fishman electronics. Mine have rosewood fretboards and bridges; theirs are made out of black plasticized paper materials called richlite and coriian. Mine have bone nuts and saddles and theirs have plastic ones. Mine have laminated mahogany WOOD back and sides; theirs have some kind of synthetic laminate material (Formica perhaps?). Mine have black and ivory perfling with mock tortoise shell bindings; theirs are unbound. Theirs were made in Mexico, where making quality stringed instruments is a 500 year long tradition; mine were made in China where quality stringed instruments have been made continuously for over three thousand years. I am a beginner (able to play only a few chords at this point). I find this guitar fairly easy to play. The neck feels good in the hand and the matte finish makes it easy to slide the fretting on the neck. The craftsmanship is very good. My only complaint is that one side of the back on my guitar is noticeably darker than the other (which is why I deducted one star). The finish looks and feels almost like smoothly sanded raw wood. Don't buy this guitar if you are wanting something flashy. Overall, I think it is a good value.Dennis

The open pore body is nice, but Ibanez also used open wood pore for the neck wood, making the neck fairly rough. I also noticed what looked like a crack in the neck wood that had been filled. The wood heel cap was split. Most of the tuners were installed crooked. Came with an extra saddle and bridge pin which is good, but the extra saddle and installed saddle were identical, and not different heights. As with many other Artwood model reviews, the action was super high and would require major reduction in saddle height. The sound was flat and sounded out of tune. Maybe different strings would help. The inside bracing had globs of glue all over, and the bridge bracing design doesn't allow room for installation of transducer pickups such as K&K Pure. The bottom strap pin was loose. I returned the guitar for money refund. Definitely over priced.Shaner1Tx
For a travel size guitar this thing is LOUD. Plus the Okouma wood is a great choice to calm down the treble from the 12 string short scale. Tone is well balanced and bass can be heard. I am not a fan of the open pore finish but it seems to work sonically. Very happy with this guitar.neilca

Unfortunately, the first 2 instruments that were sent had serious flaws and had to be returned. I decided to give it one last try and the 3rd came through in excellent condition (deducted one star for that issue). Overall, very happy with the tone and the playability of the instrument, it really rings out on those open chords and fills up the room with sound. My only real complaint is the frets had some sharp and even barbed edges at the ends where they were just not properly finished off at the factory. A light filing fixed that (another star deducted). It has a very heavy lacquer finish on the body and neck that looks great, and it does not appear to dampen the tone much if any… Great guitar for the money, especially if you are just dipping your toes into 12-string territory for the first time. This guitar plays great. It's a little quieter than my other acoustics. I have not been able to use the tuner built into my amp. I'm not sure if it's because of the quietness. It works fine sound wise through the amp. I haven't investigated much yet but my other acoustics are able to use the amp tuner with a Dean Markley installed. I still am very happy with the purchase and would buy it again. Just adds another step when getting ready to perform. By the way it stays in tune well I just like to check quickly.ca-132738

I own 10 MARTIN GUITARS. I have been playing for over 50 years. The idea of a open pore guitar intrigued me so I turned to this grand concert Ibanez because of this chineaze company who has a long an good reputation for excellence. It plays wonderful. The only complaint I have is with the vendor. I went in to pick it up and had to do my own set up. They made no attempt to make sure the guitar was perfect. They left it to me. The in store luthier was not involved in any way and the staff was to busy to care.bill

. Now let me set the scene… I am a guitar lover (I can even play a little too) and a quality professional so My expectations are somewhat higher than most looking at this product. An absolutely beautiful instrument, this is my second SA360 and although they are no longer. Made in Japan, be assured they have not lost any of the build quality or attention to detail. The guitar was really well set up, is great to play, feels good in the hand and sounds the bee’s knee’s. If you are looking to start out in guitar playing get yourself an Ibanez Gio to start as a first upgrade from that, then the SA series is where you want to be at.Timbo
Overall: For 100 bucks less than a Japanese made RG550 I'll say the quality of this Indonesian assembled guitar is sub-par albeit correctable. All hardware was loose. Blase switch wast rubbing against finish. Tone and volume pots were pushed down into contact with body. Gold playing on bridge pick-up shows nickel plating already. Action was set so low that it was unplayable. Some frets are razor sharp at the edge of the fretboard. Neck and fretboard are dry as a bone, and need to be sanded and sealed. The grain was raised when I unboxed. Which basically tells me that there was very little if any polyurethane applied to the neck or fretboard. As with all Indonesian guitars ai take this as an opportunity to fix these little things on my own, but you are better off getting an RG550 Genesis. The quality is far superior. Also the paint is awful, and the plating on all gold plated surfaces are sure to deteriorate quickly. One note: Sounds has nothing to do with these inadequacies or defects. Ibanez should just seize operations in Indonesia, as should all other guitar manufactures. Indonesian guitars are ok enough to correct, but even at the 800 dollar mark you should get a 100% gigable axe. This is not at that level.
I've owned this guitar for a year. I own more than a few Ibanez, with about half of them being Prestige and the others being 80's/90's Fujigen Ibby's, 2010's Iron Labels and Premium. I love this RGA and it's remarkably well spec'ed for most anything a diverse player will want. What it isn't: it isn't a prestige and it doesn't feel like it. That's not a bad thing; the roasted maple neck is amazing, feels comfortable, but the fingerboard does feel a little different (given the wood type). The only real negative I find is that the finish (the actual finish) feels like it's very delicate. I can see this finish cracking easily with an everyday bump. I hang my guitars and pull them just to record, so not a n issue for me, but it definitely feels very delicate. The only other reasonable complaint is that for the pricepoint, it should include at least a gig bag. This is basically a 1,000 dollar guitar.

Overall: I have never purchased a guitar online but my have things changed. My Son ordered an Ibanez AS7312 as a gift for me. I unboxed it and it was stunning and I am particular. I looked high and low for a flaw but found none. I checked the neck relief, it was perfect, fret rocker, perfect – fret sprout, none, it was tuned 1/2 step down and the intonation was as close as you could with 6 saddles on a 12 string guitar. Then I plugged it in and I remembered why I missed my old 12 string so much. All I can say is great job Ibanez and great job zZounds.Stan
I have owned my Ibanez Artcore AS7312 for about a year now, and I will say it is one of the best guitars I own…..and I own many. I was looking for an electric 12 string without the price tag of a Rickenbacker. Even though I looked at this Ibanez many times, it took me a while to order it because I was trying to decide if on a semi hollow body design that the jangly, cutting thru sound that I was looking for would be there. When the guitar came in and I plugged it into my Fender Twin I could not have been happier. The sound continues to amaze me even after a year of hearing it. I don't think I realized at the time I ordered it that it had a solid maple block that the pickups were mounted into much less realize what a difference in the sound, and sustain that this would make. The solid center block, and the back and sides are all maple. The block gives the guitar bite and sustain, while the maple back and sides tends to project with a more brighter sound…….perfect for a great 12 string sound….at least to me anyway. I should have known Ibanez would know what they were doing, but I guess I more equate Ibanez with solid body guitars so it took me a while to order it. I equally enjoy just putting on 6 strings and playing it that way too. I have a '64 ES-335 but I actually like the sound to this guitar better probably because it sounds more like a solid body and that is mostly what I play. It was a little hard pressing down 12 strings until I read that a lot of players tune down a whole step and then capo back up to the 2nd fret. This made all this difference and was then easy to play. This guitar has a great action, great tone, and is pure elegance and eye candy on stage, lol If you're looking for a great 12 string electric at a decent price I would highly recommend this guitar.kareydunn1805
First of all the AR420 is a beautiful looking guitar with the abalone giving just a perfect amount of bling. The setup and action were great out of the box. The pickups are pretty good sounding alnicos and the tritone switching on each pickup give a wide variety of tones. The parallel sounds are a great alternative to the full humbucker and aren’t as thin as the split coils. The neck is very comfortable, fret ends are well finished and the hardware all seems fine. I find it very nice to play and easy to get the sounds I want. Design-wise the shape gives very good access to the upper frets but that also leads to the primary drawbacks, neither of which is an enormous issue for me but just annoying. Firstly the guitar is neck heavy so it does want to dive and secondly the pickup selector switch is directly above the neck pickup as it had to be brought forward towards the bridge due to the cutaway. That does make it susceptible to being knocked while playing with a resultant pickup selection change. Overall I am very happy with this guitar.Andrew C.

It is fantastic, it’s beautiful, sounds amazing (plugged in and acoustic), plays amazingly well, stays in tune, the tuners are smooth and work as you would expect on a much more expensive guitar. The neck is perfect, the action is great (Martin MA540 Authentic Acoustic Light strings 0.054-0.012). I haven’t a single complaint I can’t say whether the quality has gone up or down in the last few years. Mine is an earlier production model about 10 years old. They’re relatively common , You can find a nice used one locally in most cities for under $150. That way you can play and give it a thorough inspection before you buy it. I usually don't leave negative reviews. This guitar is beautiful, it sounds amazing. However, I just can't believe that guitar center would let this be shipped. The neck seems fine but every fret divider is razor sharp. It's so uncomfortable that I have quit playing it. Living in a small town it's very expensive to return stuff, so I guess it will just sit for now. To guitar centers credit, I have shopped there for many years and never been disappointed. But gee guys, why wouldn't you be checking this stuff? If I picked it off your wall I would never buy it unless you fixed it for me. Sorry but this sucksJohn
Tried out two of these at the local store looking for a first guitar for my son. Both sounded pretty good for the price point, but both had problems with the neck and really terrible frets. Terrible like not safe for children or unsuspecting adults – they both had sharp edges sticking out the whole length of the neck. Between that, some minor string buzz, a crazy high 9th fret on one, and iffy intonation on the other, it just didn't seem worth getting either of them. What's the point of getting a low priced guitar if you have to spend $100+ getting it worked over to make it playable? I suspect that the neck binding makes it difficult for the factory to really get the frets properly dressed and still pass cosmetic inspection. It may be I just had the bad luck to find the two worst examples of this model in the same store, but I suggest you move up notch in price range and you will be happier with what you get.triple.ratrider

Overall, I'd say that I'm very happy with the guitar. It plays well, and it sounds great. I had to tweak it a bit, though. It had a respectable amount of bow in the neck when I received it. I've torqued most of it out, but I have the truss rod tightened as far as I dare to. The action is still a bit high at the 12th fret, but I'll take care of that when I change out the strings. It sounds very chimey and bright with no bottom end at all, hopefully a beefier set of strings will help with that. Skinny frets, I wish they were a bit more robust. String spacing (between pairs) isn't consistent between the nut and the bridge, I may notch the bridge a bit to eliminate that. Otherwise, it's a beautifully built guitar and a great value for the price. You won't be disappointed.
I had a cheap 12 string guitar for about almost two years. I had been playing corridos during this time. However, I had played guitar for several years. Mainly rock and other stuff. Well, after I got it, I could play all the solos I couldn't really play clean. I guess the other guitar really was bad, or this one is great. Funny thing, I had a really good player tell me to not buy this model but the more expensive one. Well, I'm glad I decided to go with this one. This guitar sounds great and it's extremely easy to play. The guitar stays in tune fairly well for a 12 string guitar. The action is low. I haven't tried it the electronics aside from the tuner which works fairly well compared to my snark. I do have a Taylor and Martin guitar, and the tone on this guitar is pretty clean.Juan
This Guitar plays like a dream, sounds great no matter if it is plugged in or not, stays in tune and looks great. This is a great price for a guitar of this quality, but thanks to another dealers daily deal and Guitar Center's price matching, it was even better. I was able to get this out of layaway for $240 less. I am very happy with this guitar. I have not played in a band for a while, but getting back into practice and plan to start back with some solo acoustic gigs. Having this awesome new guitar is surely an inspiration to help me want to practice more.Kip

Having owned an original 1980 Yairi DY87 doubleneck since new in 1980 I was looking to semi-retire it with a new six string acoustic to be my work horse. With that I bought the AJ80CE six string a few months ago and I am thoroughly amazed with the tone,feel, and looks of this Alvarez beauty. Now to compliment it I have now bought the twelve string version (open box) and I can;t say enough about it! Although I had to make a slight adjustment on it as the low "E" was kind of dead sounding- I popped out the saddle and adjusted the braided strip underneath and now it is absolutely an awesome sounding , looking and playing twelve string. I highly recommend both of these!
I ordered this 12 string from MF a few months ago. I have played an Alvarez Yairi since 1983 and my six string plays as well after 30 years than the day I bought it from St. Louis Music. I wanted a 12 string as I have only owned one in my lifetime–an Ovation I traded on a Martin six before trading for the Yairi. I have been so impressed with Alvarez that I didn't shop for anything else in a 12 string, saw this on MF and pulled the trigger knowing I could send in back. I registered it in my name day one. Well, I have owned plenty of 12 string guitars in my time. Rickenbackers, Fenders, Gibsons, Peaveys, and Ovations but this is the finest of the bunch. I seriously wouldn,t replace it with any of the others that I have owned. I am a big guy, so this big jumbo feels perfect for me. The neck is just right, not too wide, the action is low enough, and tuned to D using a capo and extra light strings, it has a smooth touch and a loud enough sound, both highs and lows. It stays in tune. always a plus! The electrionics are superb and offer a fine balance of tones and volume combinations. I play mine through a Fender Acoustosonic 90 and wow. I am just blown away somtimes by the effects and possibilities with this setup. The whole instrument is a thing of beauty and I bet if you get your hands on one, you will just have to own it.12 String Paul

Great sounding guitar, electric or acoustic. Easy & fun to play I bought this guitar as a backup for just in case My 66 Gibson LG-0 fails or string breaks at a gig. The next day after it arrived & played it live plugged in for 2 hrs. It was great. Deep bass & clear highs. The only thing that was a little bit of a bummer was only a cosmetic, in my opinion flaw. You can see where they marked the frets for installation of the wire with a hand marked, magic marker on each fret. Then they must have gotten a little wild because there is an actual magic marker mark on the fretboard for no reason. We laughed about it being from china & kept playing.
