I am not a classical guitarist, I am an acoustic/electric guitarist who has modified what I do to fit a classical format. When it comes to strings, I have always opted for the biggies, usually D'Addario extra hard tension (and the titanium treble set is my go-to). I believed in the SRV adage: Bigger strings give bigger tone. I picked up a set of these Augustines the last time they were on sale at MF. I confess I got 'em because they had Segovia on the package and were on sale. My heart sank when the strings arrived, they are the black label set and are marked "extra light tension." I teach in a public school and thought I'd put these strings on and beat them to death in a matter of days. That was over a month ago, and my mid 70s Yamaha (solid cedar/rosewood) has never sounded better. I don't know what it is about these strings (components, care of manufacture), but they seem to really lay flat on the board, and I mean that in a good way. I have already admitted that my classical technique really blows, but when I try to bear down on the lower strings, the heavier wound strings almost seem to "roll" under my stupid sausage fingers. Not so these guys. Very pleasant sound and feel, I may have switched brands to Augustine Blacks. And did I mention Segovia's picture is on the label?…E. T.

I raise the issue of product description, which is not good. What's the difference between these strings and standard D'addario NYXL's – not very clear. What exactly is "balanced tension?" Not described very well. Retailers should be offering advice and information to customers who may want a change but don't know which to choose. Having said that, these strings are "very good" with good all round sound with a smooth tone. Are they any better that standard NYXL's – don't really know.John A.
I've used D'Addario for years but I've always had to change them before every gig (acid sweat I'm afraid… yuk). You know what I mean. Even after wiping the strings down, same thing… corrosion. No corrosion with these though, must be a new alloy. NYXLs last me at least 5 gigs and that includes a couple of hours practise every day. I bottled out before the last gig and changed them but not before I deliberately tried to break them with a few 2 and 2.5 step bends and they didn't. The tuning stability is excellent with very little break in time. OK they don't sound as 'zingy' after a couple of days but I can live with that and yes they are twice the price of regular XLs but if they last 5 times as long then I don't care, I'm quids in!gingoblin

I use the coated EXP45 normal tension strings on my Guild GAD-C2NA classical guitar. This is the guitar I travel with and use for most fingerstyle applications. I reserve my Ramirez E4 for local classical performances. The bottom 3 strings have great definition and stay within a few cents of concert pitch for several months. The top 3 strings are the same nylons from the EJ45 set. They may drop 20 cents overnight, but tune right up and stay in tune while playing. This set has a respectable classical tone but is a little brighter than the EJ45 Pro Arte set. They are fantastic if you are playing and singing popular and rock songs along with a few classical favorites. You can beat on them with rougher technique and they hold up and sing out. The EXP45 set only puts about 81 lbs. on the neck as compared to 86 lbs. for the EJ45 set. The lighter feel makes them very versatile and reduces your fatigue. The D'Addario claim is true: The composite core bottoms really do last 3-4 times longer. With a lot of practicing and performing, I can burn through an EJ45 set in 1-2 weeks. I've changed EXP45 sets at 2 months for a gig and have not really needed to. The windings will show some wear, but the bottoms are still staying in tune. The coating pays off if you don't always remember to wipe down the strings and fingerboard after playing.There are some who call me...Jim
I recently purchased a used classical guitar and gave it a set up, replaced the strings. That's when I purchased these EJ45's….Took almost a month for the strings to stop stretching. Would not stay in tune !! Maybe drop these in some boiling water like E.V. used to do to his strings to stretch them out..?? THE BAD….I thought it was the tuners (machine heads) on the guitar and almost purchased a new set. I've used the red package normal tension with no issues, I will not buy the EJ45 again. This is a nice package set of guitar strings. You get ten sets in one box. that makes it so nice to not have to keep buying them so often. I really like how they packaged these guitar strings. the outer box is smaller than you would think for ten sets of guitar strings. But instead of having each set of guitar strings in another box individually, they have each set of guitar strings in its own bag, that is sealed. Made it easier to find a place to store the extra guitar strings for when I need them next. Was easier to stow an extra set in my guitar case since it was not in a stiff box, but in a sealed bag instead. I like how the guitar strings are color coded on the package and the string. It made restringing so much easier to do. Just had to look to f the color string end for the specific string I was doing. Makes it easier for novice guitar stringers. Not having to guess is nice. These D'Addario EXL110-3D strings are great! They are bit heavier than the 'slinkys' that my son usually uses, but he really likes these too. They go on easy, and seem strong. They sound amazing! My son has 1 of the 3 sets on his strat, I have one set on my vintage 80's Ibanez, and the third set is a spare in case we break any strings. They give a rich on the lows and bright on the highs tone. They feel good on the fingers, and have the right amount of give. The intonation is excellent and these, apparently D'Addario's best selling strings, will possibly last a long time. I read that the core of these strings is hexagonal in shape, which helps the way the wrap sounds, feels and behaves. These strings have a really nice sustain too, and seem to stay in tune better than other brands we've used. I think these would make a great gift, as they come in a set of 3, but also these are good to stock up on for yourself. We'll definitely be getting more!Kedst123
Bought a 10 pack in 1992. Still have a couple sets left. My main Warmoth partscaster wears the strings out in about 5 years. You read that correctly, i leave those strings on until the winding on the D string wears off. Not that they break. I gig regularly and I use stainless steel frets on my partscasters. Balanced tension strings aren't mysterious: they're the exact same as other strings, except that the gauges are chosen by progressive pounds of tension instead of just the thickness of the gauge. A string from a set that is balanced doesn't feel too sloppy or too stiff relative to its neighbors. I like these a lot and sometimes make my own sets with a tension chart and by buying singles. This 11 set is standard excellent D'addario quality but is a little heaver than normal to balance it, so I think I'll go back to the 10 set of these once the two I bought need changing and I'm buying a balanced set off the rack. I play lots of Albinez, Tarrega and Bach concert level pieces. I am a huge Yairi fan and own a 1975 CY120. The tone of this guitar with regular nylon strings is rich and warm, if perhaps a bit dark. I was looking for a string to brighten up the trebles a bit and wanted to try fluorocarbon strings. These Savarez strings did the trick perfectly and now the trebles sparkle and the deep bass is more articulated and distinct. If you own a guitar you would consider "dark" sounding, this is the perfect string to brighten it up. Might not be the best set if your guitar is a bit thin sounding. I bought the low tension strings for my 2003 Martin D18 GE. I have been playing them for only a short time but there is a difference in the feel – better- and the balance that I really like. Time will tell how long they last. I bought 3 sets so that I could give them a fair test over a long period.

A personal choice, but I like D'addario strings in general and always them on my steel acoustic and electric guitars. Just acquired a Spanish classical guitar (new experience for me!) so I started experimenting with strings. Very light tension and very responsive. Now I can barre with my index finger with little of effort. Strings 4, 5, 6 sound great. Strings 1, 2, 3 sound just OK, and they produce slight rustling sound when my fingers move between the frets. They also make rustling sound when I pick them using my bare fingers (no nails). With a regular pick they sound better but still not as clear and sweet as my previous set.SAP
I have used others that I will not name, but this type of string (Savarez 520 R) fits very well with my playing style (Classical). They move and respond harmoniously together! Bright and clean! I'm a senior citizen jammer, having played guitar ever since Peter, Paul & Mary were young. These guitar strings have been my favorites for many years. Recently I tried some others, simply because I wasn't in an area where these were sold. I noticed the difference right away, and so did my fingers! The Elixirs are recommended for my Taylor GS Mini, and for good reason. I've had them last for years in the past, and now that I'm playing more than ever, I change them quarterly. Fat Sound, my local dealer stack up these exclusively over the 80/20 because they sound so good. They are luthiers I trusted for many years for advise. If you want get add some boldness to your acoustic guitar, try one of these. They are probably the best sounding acoustic guitar strings from Elixir. I tried these briefly on my Taylor DN3. It came equiped with Elixir Nanoweb 80/20. When it was time to stock some replacements, my local dealer had only the Elixir Nanoweb Phosphore Bronze and argued that they sounded better on Taylor guitar because they have warmer tone. It turned out they have a great tone and are very lound and very well projecting, but unfortunately, the tension is much higher then the Elixir Nanoweb 80/20 of the same gauge, and it made my studio guitar sound like a folk guitar. Sincde I did not want to mess with the near prefect factory setup of the DN3, and I prefered the Studio tone of the 80/20 over the Folk tone of the Phosphore Bronze, I decided to go back to the 80/20. But that doesn't mean they are not good strings. They are in fact better sounding in many ways then the 80/20, but I the 80/20 just suites my taste better with this specific Taylor DN3. The Phosphore Bronze strings have huge and clear mids, and a lot of high mid harmonics. Yes they have much more tension then the 80/20, and would probably require neck adjustement when switching from 80/20 to these, but the bold and forward folk/blues tone pays back for that small sacrifice. They have much more harmonics then the 80/20, and the high E string is not too bright. The first thing I noticed with these strings was the fact that the High E string was not lean, but rather fat and well defined. . However, compared with the 80/20, the lows are a bit overwelmed by the bold mids. Which is not bad at all, it's just that my DN3 has a clean and well defined low end with the 80/20, which is not as noticeable with the Phosphore Bronze. My next guitar will probably be more for Folk and will have these strings.Pierre-BJnej
Put these on a bright, shimmering guitar that had old strings maybe a year or more and put on these Elixir Nano supposed upgrade by suggestions at my local guitar center and immediately took them off an put the old strings back on! These are dull, muffled sounding dead resonance producing strings. They SUCKED compared to old di Addario strings? Waste of time and money. I'm not a serious Classical player but do read music and try classical tunes on my 45 + year old solid cedar top classical guitar. I think this brand of strings is fine. I'm going to go back to medium or higher tension though. Light tension takes too much tuning effort, and they're a bit flabby to my fingers. I don't think for nylon strings that the arguments regarding age and arthritis means much. I'm in my 60s, but can still bend those steel strings just fine thank you.JC
I have been using D'Addario EJ-45 (Normal Tension) strings for a couple of years and decided I'd give these 43's a try. Contrary to what other reviewers have indicated, I immediately noted a decrease in volume when using these light tension strings. I suppose if one is playing with electronic amplification, these strings might be fine. I play spruce solid-top guitars (J. Marcario 145 and Yamaha GC-7M) so crispness, as well as volume, are crucial to me. Unfortunately, these 43's have neither the volume nor the clarity of the 45's. They are a touch easier to play and they may suit the needs of others; however, they aren't right for me. I'll be switching back to 45's tomorrow. Best regards … and happy playing !yelleko
Much better type of string than the ball end type. Also, these have a smoothe feel and give a nice full sound to my Yamaha NCX 900R classical guitar. The strings are forgiving on the fingers as I get back into playing after years of abcense from it. Also not noisy from sliding sounds. Tying the ends on and changing nylon is very different for me, accustomed to an Ovation, takes a little longer but is worth the difference for an improved sound. For me nylon strings are better because of losing 1/2" off left ring finger, classical easier to do. Good choice, buy them.cehl1911

Silk ans Steel strings seen to have less tension a smoother feel and sound mellow. I use them on my parlor guitar and they are plenty loud. I fell back in love with my parlor guitar after putting silk and steel strings on. I still use EXP17's on my dreadnought and different sizes on my electrics like heavy tops on my 335 and 10's on the tele and about to try 7's on my strat. I think guitars are all different and need strings that match the guitar and the style of your playing. I have no problem going from one gauge to another. Most of my practice is on the acoustic with the 13-56 tuned Eb, then when I pick up another guitar It seems to be faster and easier along with being more fun if that's possible. I love D'Addario strings sorry now spending so much money on trying other brands. I recommend trying D'Addario silk and steel on any folk/acoustic guitar first!Lewis
I'm no professional. I like to play around the house and I often do solo music in church. I tend to only play acoustic guitar because I love the sound. However, the 80/20's make me want to vomit both in sound and feel. These strings take anything you play and transform it into a smooth and beautiful piece of art. They feel wonderful, very soft but still very present. They sound so warm, but also articulate every sound. If the EJ40's ever get discontinued, I might just hang up my axe and stop chopping down tunes.JC_Broussard
I play finger style and bought the strings to cut down on or eliminate finger scraping noise; the packaging states "virtually no finger noise." The claim is not accurate. Whether with my fretting hand (left) or plucking hand (right), the strings are only slightly less noisy than any other round-wound strings I've ever played. The finger scrapes were louder than the finger scrape noise I'm still getting from D'Addario flat tops. I am replacing these strings with flat wound strings. The manufacturer's claim of "virtually no finger noise" was misleading and I wasted my time and money. I do not recommend these strings for fingerstyle play. For any other style of play, the strings are like any others and it is a matter of the tone you are looking for. These are mellow and easy to bend.

I have been using these particular Savarez strings on my trusty old Yamaha APX-9NA (nylon strung electro-acoustic) for years. Tried many others, more expensive, less expensive, but for the jazzy/strummy/fingerpicking styles that I mainly play, these seem the best. Great sound and last well when doing lots of gigs. Interesting that the solid top three trebles actually get a little brighter and 'sing' more after a few days from new. That maybe down to the special material they are made from, but heh, "I'm a guitarist, not a scientist Jim!" 😁

They have a really smooth and resonant sound with my guitar and are very responsive for at least a few months of regular playing. Hey you music hounds out there! Give Guitar Center a shot at setting you up with some gear! I also asked if they traded used pedals towards a new pedal and, yes I walked out with a new distortion pedal!! Strings are the lowest around town and in stock. These 3250 nickel plated steel wound fender strings really sound good with the bullet ends (more surface touching the tremolo) and steel is stronger and less likely to break on a large bend and the sound is a little stronger on the pickup I've been playing 30 plus years and tried many string types and this is what I buy!!! I like regular gauge .10-.46 but the choice is yours =JamMan= play till I drop……
The reason I tried these strings (3150R) was because i bought a Telecaster (Baja) in 2007. I read about fret wear being less because it matches the alloy in the frets of new Fender guitars, in comparison to steel strings. Therefore there is the hope it offers less wear and tear on the frets. I had also had problems with the Telecaster 'icepick' sound on the bridge pickup. These strings softened the icepick sound I was getting with steel strings. They last for up to 4-6 months. I think the Tele and nickel string combo is a winner for me. My attitude towards Fender strings changed after this, so I tried the bullets on my Strats. Guess what they were even better with tremelo dives and resistance to detuning. But I thought the pure nickel really affected the sound I got. I like the biting sound from steel strings (GHS Boomers, 10-46) on both a 1970 Stratocaster and a Lace sensor stock equipped 1990 Strat Ultra, so I choose the nickel-plated (3250R) steel strings. Pure joy of sound from both. I had to get a refret on the '70 Strat in 2010, so it was a good move to use these strings to avoid fret wear.

I find all Augustine strings to be great value for high quality. These are my 'go to' strings that I use every day. I have not found better working strings. Much better than some of the rather twangy 'corum' strings that seem to be so popular (and expensive) these days. Recommended.Richard
I am not a classical guitarist, I am an acoustic/electric guitarist who has modified what I do to fit a classical format. When it comes to strings, I have always opted for the biggies, usually D'Addario extra hard tension (and the titanium treble set is my go-to). I believed in the SRV adage: Bigger strings give bigger tone. I picked up a set of these Augustines the last time they were on sale at MF. I confess I got 'em because they had Segovia on the package and were on sale. My heart sank when the strings arrived, they are the black label set and are marked "extra light tension." I teach in a public school and thought I'd put these strings on and beat them to death in a matter of days. That was over a month ago, and my mid 70s Yamaha (solid cedar/rosewood) has never sounded better. I don't know what it is about these strings (components, care of manufacture), but they seem to really lay flat on the board, and I mean that in a good way. I have already admitted that my classical technique really blows, but when I try to bear down on the lower strings, the heavier wound strings almost seem to "roll" under my stupid sausage fingers. Not so these guys. Very pleasant sound and feel, I may have switched brands to Augustine Blacks. And did I mention Segovia's picture is on the label?…E. T.

I've had these strings on my Alvarez MC761 for almost two weeks, and they are the best strings I have found for it. Before installing these, I tried the D'Addario ProArte J45 set, then Augustine Blacks. The ProArtes are nice strings, but on my guitar the basses overpowered the trebles. The Augustines started losing their tone and intonation quickly. The D'Addario J30 set is not one of D'Addario's high-tech sets, just a good quality set of traditional nylon strings that stretched in quickly and have good balance and accurate harmonics. The treble strings have a comfortable matte surface that is nowhere near as rough as Savarez Red Cards, and they don't squeak like Savarez. What I like best about them is the third string. It's gauged and tensioned like a normal G string, instead of the usual thick, loose 3rd string you get in most nylon sets that goes out of tune all the time. D'Addario doesn't promote these strings as much as the ProArtes and composite sets, but if you're looking for a high-quality traditional string with significant improvements over some of the older brands, check these out.Jim T.-SDsDV
I got these for playing classical guitar, (in terms of style of music, not just the type of instrument) and I was fairly disappointed. The nylon strings were very rough and ate away at my nails. They sound pretty good if you use them for strumming or folk type stuff, but for actual classical music, I would NOT buy these.Deeoderant
