This book has a begining section looking at some of the worlds most famous classical guitar makers along with their plans (which have been scaled down to fit on the pages). The book's guitar building method has been very well described. If you are planning on building a classical guitar this book is a very good place to start.1155christopher

For the classical luthier, whether experienced or a novice, Roy Courtnall's book is a "must have." It is both a "how-to" book on classical guitar construction and an outstanding reference. It is profusely illustrated throughout. Part One is dedicated to the analysis of guitars built by many of the world's greatest luthiers (including Torres, Hauser, Fleta, Bouchet, and others), which includes specifications and detailed drawings. The book is worth its cost for this section alone. Part Two discusses the necessary tools and workshop one will need to build a classical guitar. Part Three outlines the construction process in a step-by-step manner. Courtnall follows the "Spanish Method" in his construction method, one which I personally prefer as well. Here, Courtnall's approach is comprehensive. I was already quite familiar with Cumpiano and Natelson's methods, as outlined in their book _Guitarmaking: Tradition and Technology_, prior to purchasing Courtnall's book. Their building methods differ somewhat, but this is not at all unusual. One area where I enjoy Courtnall's book that is lacking in C&N's, however, is perspective. Courtnall takes the time to show how he does things, and then also to show how some of the various great masters did these same things when their methods differed from his own. There is no single book that will answer all the questions that a luthier may have, although Courtnall's does a better job than many. I would encourage the reader to collect works on guitar building because each one will have something to offer that might appeal to the builder that others will not. I have a sizeable collection of books on guitars, and the most important of them are (in order), Courtnall's _Making Master Guitars_, Cumpiano and Natelson's _Guitarmaking_, Rik Middelton's _The Guitar Maker's Workshop_, and the late Irving Sloane's _Classic Guitar Construction_. Middleton's book is rather idiosyncratic and Sloane's is somewhat dated now, but both have useful techniques that a builder might find valuable. C&N's book has been regarded for years as the Bible of acoustic guitar making, but for the classical builder, Courtnall's is clearly a very close second in terms of construction, and is without peer when one includes the section which discusses and illustrates the works of the Masters.eclecticizer

Compelling content? Not really, it's for crossword crazies likw my wife and I. As a hardcover it is heavy but superior at finding that right word. I order the soft cover Andrew Swanfeldt, which I've used for years. Love 'em both but I think Garcia Schaffer might be a little better. My wife thinks so anyway. This cross word is quite difficult. I'm an attorney and I have not completed a single puzzle. I have partially completed 8, and that is with the help of a dictionary. However, that is the point of a crossword puzzle. It should be difficult. That being said, it is quite frustrating.JOHN

My mother is an avid crossword puzzle fan. She has worked the NY Times crosswords for many years out of our local newspaper. She likes to be challenged and sometimes has to put the puzzle down and come back to it later in the day. But she persists and always finishes them. These from the NY Times have always been her favorites. I do puzzles in front of TV. With this book, I can try the cryptic first then use the non-cryptic clues for what I can't figure out or vice versa. I love it.Liz
