I have a 60w Fender Deville amp. Lovely clean sounds straight from the amp but couldn't really use the overdrive channel without the volume getting to an inconsiderate level at home. This pedal has addressed that issue really well. This pedal now provides me really raunchy distortion while providing a greater control for volume. The pedal also provides a nice boost in changing between a clean channel directly from the amp and then through the pedal. Very pleased with this investment, particularly for the price. Dynamic, responds to pick velocity. Super clear and dynamic when you play quietly and brings some really nice break up when you play aggressively. Very wide range of overdrive from squishy clean to ground beef distortion. 2 knob eq section is useful. Some pedals have a couple of sweet spots, but this one…I haven't been able to dial in a bad tone. Its very good and I highly recommend it. I play it through Fender style clean amps, I cannot attest to how it works with driven amps. It's one of those inspiring pedals…if you have one you know what I'm talking about.Jay K

I have playing guitar for over 20 years. This is a totally new distortion for me. I have tried several others that were excellent, like some MXRs, this is even better I think. I have had the DS-1 in the past but then I upgraded to the Boss Metalzone MT2 and the Boss MetalCore ML2. Both excellent buy more metal. You can play rock, metal, blues, almost anything with the Boss DS-1X. The high and low have a wide range. The Distortion control changes the contour also adds more treble/high as it goes up. At lower values you can use it with split humbuckers or two single coils for very crunchy TS9 boosted over drive SRV type tones. This is what I like about this. Great sound with neck and brigde humbuckers and split coils. In my setup i use Evolution7, Deactivator pickups. As you play up to higher frets, the sound stays thick very smooth. On low strings it stays relevant, without being boomy. the sound morphs in sutbtle ways if you play to very low strings. it is a totally new effect, not just a distortion.NoNickName1
As I transition from PODs to stomp boxes, this is the first distortion I buy. The online reviews are good. I recommend Pete Thorn's sound test as it's a demonstration in detail. After trying it out myself I cannot but agree with everyone. It's NOT a improvement of the old DS-1. It's a whole new beast! i wanted to compare this to my boss hm-2 pedal but i can't get to it at this time, so i'll have to do this by itself. this is a very nice distortion pedal. again the plastic casing is durable and inexpensive ,so you're getting a good pedal for the money.the level and distortion controls are sensitive- i consider a plus. i do wish there was more bass in the in the low frequency control. now you might be asking, "why don't i cut back on the high frequency control?". here's why : the high frequency control appears to be a combination high frequency/gain control! the more you turn it up, the more gain. combined with the sensitive dist/level controls this is a nice feature if you want that. i like it . i can always boost the bass on the amp/EQ/whatever. i like to use different dimensions of distortions and if you are like me ,i recommend this.thurstonnalley
I guess I'm more of a roady/studio guy than I am an artist, as I've always got more out of turning knobs then actually playing music lol. I bought this pedal for one reason and one sound only. The Swedish "chainsaw" guitar tone of the 90's that came out of Sunlight Studios that was popularized by bands like Entombed and Dismembered. I think it sounds incredibly good considering I bought it NEW for 25 bones plus shipping! The distortion is sometimes a bit over the top, but cleans up when you roll back the volume knobs on the guitar. I imagine you could really get some interesting tones going if you paired this pedal with a compressor and eq both before and after it in the signal chain (and with Behringer that's actually an affordable option), and of course, a tube amp, as most of the bands with that sound supposedly used Peavey 5150 tube heads. Very nasty distortion pedal, if you could travel back in time to the 90's you could probably sell this to a metal head for absolutely ridiculous amounts of money. If you are not buying this pedal for a certain "Swedish death metal" sound or just metal in general, I would not recommend this pedal, as there are probably much better pedals out there for what you need. Its made out of plastic which I personally don't mind, as I'm not a touring or gigging musician. If I stomped on it several times a night for half a year I dunno how that would work out. Not a big fan of the color, but then again, I didn't buy this pedal for aesthetic value. Overall: I have more overdrive pedals then I realistically need but my selection of distortion pedals has always been disappointing for my taste, just never the right tone regardless of the set up. I figured this pedal wasn’t too much and saw good reviews for the pedal historically. Yes there are differences from the originals to the model we have today but this distortion pedal is ridiculously versatile. The distortion pot is very broad and goes from a subtle O\D to a full faced fuzz and then when you sweep thru the filter, that’s where you see how versatile the Rat truly is. Is this a pedal geared towards the modern metal sound? Probably not. Is this pedal a good product for the price? Absolutely! The ease of use with the three control knobs just makes this pedal a great first buy or for those, like myself, who seemed to keep coming up short with distortion pedals, a truly simple and reliable tank of a stomp box. The Rat pedal is a classic and was my first pedal in 1986 when hi gain amps werent affordable to 15 year old kids. That pedal was mean ! It had the original lm308 chip and gave me the Kill Em All sound I craved. Fast forward to 2020 and the pedal has not changed much. Its mean and can give you fuzz to mean hi gain rhythm and violin line like sustain on leads. For $69.99 it is affordable and awesome. Cons : you cant power this pedal with a standard Boss power supply. Its either buy a Rat power supply/wall wart or run it on batteries. Also, the battery compartment is plastic and not as tank like as the rest of the pedal. The changing of chips does make the pedal lose some of its magic. The new chip is fine but I do miss the lm308 and maybe its hype Im falling for. It likely is. So what can you do ? I sent my pedal of to Utah to be rehoused. The pedal itself is hard to adhere to a pedalboard bc it is so heavy and awkward. So mine is being put in a more pedalboard friendly housing. Also, all the components like in and out jacks etc will be replaced/upgraded as well as some cheap components inside the pedal. You also get the lm308 chip. Hell yeah ! For $150 you get a massively improved pedal. Do you need to do this ? No of course not. But if you want the best Rat pedal youcan get ( which in the new housing also allows being powered by a Boss style power supply via wall wart or pedalboard) then the mod will be a fun way to modify an already smoking pedal.swampdonkey90
This is a great pedal and is very versatile. It can go from an overdriven tube amp tone at low gain settings to very thick heavy distortion/fuzz tone. I like to set the gain low to a nice overdriven tube amp tone and then have my boss SD-1 in front of it pushing the pedal harder. It gives it a nice 80s hair metal, Marshall JCM800 type tone. The tone of the pedal is great and it is very versatile and a good deal. It will stay on my pedal board. The other nice thing is is it's extremely easy to use with just 3 knobs and very easy to find a great tone. When I first got this pedal I didn't like how bright it was but that where the filter knob comes into play and you can roll off the brightness to match the guitar and amp you have and get a great tone. This allows you to play it on bright and dark amps a like. I use it with a Gibson Les Paul standard with burst bucket pro pickups into my 65 reissue fender Princeton reverb and I will also run it into my Boss katana MKii 50 watt. Love it! So far, I've used this Vox Silk Drive going directly into my recording interface as well as the "line" input on my Vox Cambridge50 – sounds warm and creamy in both situations. I also compared its sound going through studio monitors with my Vox AC15, and while the character is different, it's definitely in the same league for both clean and crunch playing. I've been a NuTube fan since Vox came out with the MV50 miniamps a few years back. While the MV50 Boutique is my favorite, all distort like a 12ax7 tube, but clearer in a way. Compared to the NuTube sound, my Fender, Marshall and Vox tube amps all have a papery kind of sound covering the distorted signal. The NuTube has 12ax7-style warmth when overdriven, but without the papery edge. But the Vox amps with the NuTubes always had some connectivity issue, such as missing an effects loop, or had extra stuff that got in the way like digital modeling. This Valvenergy pedal has the missing pieces! It's fully analog, so no fizzy sound. Full EQ, and especially the bright switch and mid control, which fix the only tone issue with the MV50 Boutique which is that it can sound a little cold. This pedal has the same character as the Boutique, but with filled-out EQ options. But like the Boutique, if you push it hard with another boost pedal and it just gets creamier, like a good tube amp front end. The "preamp" output settings don't seem to be boosting the signal, so I'm guessing they're an impedance switch designed to let you plug straight into a sound board or DAW without a DI box – they work great going into my board. And the cab sim setting is wonderful – it seems to be the same as in the MV50s, which I once compared to micing my Marshall 1960 cabinet with a Neumann KM84 and I couldn't tell the difference between the two.
I use the Vox Silk Drive with Cab. Sim. mode in front of my Acoustic A20 amplifier to get that nice overdriven sound that only a tube amplifier can provide. This pedal is not just for overdrive though; this pedal even improves my sound with the gain down. On the other end of the setting there is plenty of gain to get some rocking good distortion; my guitar is a Hanson Firenze with three vintage-wound (6.5 K Ohm) blade-style mini humbuckers. So plenty of gain despite the fact that this pedal is the low-gain member of the family and my guitar doesn't have hot pickups. This tube-preamp pedal also works well with a compressor or tube screamer (drive on low for tone shaping only). I am enjoying playing through this pedal; my guitar once again sounds as good as it did in the store when I bought it after demoing through an expensive Supro amplifier.Dave

Now I don't hate it, but Its not my first go to pedal. I like the more modern BOSS "Metal Core". It is however like all BOSS PEDALS built like a tank, extremely reliable and a great first pedal. For the money, this is a super value. I found that I like it for "Gain Stacking" in combination with the BOSS MD-2"Mega Distortion" and a few other pedals. Even two DS-1 DISTORTION together improve the performance to me. Overall it's not terrible and I see were for some it could really be a price but I lean towards Heavy… Heavy Metal and for that it's more a corvette when you need a Lamborghini. I had one of these racks for well over 5 years. My original got pretty dingy so I decided to buy a new one because the first one served me well. I bought this Christmas of 2019. After 6 months of use, the rack is beginning to rust. Try to find the product using description and model number on KitchenAid website so I can contact them about it for possible replacement but got "product not found". Other than the metal rack, it's a great product. The rack should be stainless steel. I generally love KitchenAid products but I recommend against this one.randy_san
Highly Underrated! Many people think this is a low-grade Boss effect pedal, but with proper settings and usage, it stands up to the quality and fidelity you have come to expect from Boss "Built like a Tank" pedals. The reason many people give this pedal low marks is because the Tone Knob is crazy! Similar to the Fender Reverb Tanks, this knob goes from just about right to way out of control in a hurry! – lol. Set fully left/counter-clockwise (7 o'clock), it is dark and muddy, around 8 o'clock it will sound good for a Strat lead tone, around 9 o'clock and a little beyond is good for fat Gibson humbuckers to cut through any mix, and anything beyond that is way too thin, harsh and God knows what you would use it for outside of a specialized high freq-type notch filter effect or laying heavy on a low string. This is what people don't like about this pedal…the Tone control is too wide – lol. Find the right spot and you are there tone-wise. This is Distortion, not Overdrive and it is made to provide searing lead tones and carefully voiced rock chords. It holds a strong distortion without going into feedback as easily as other pedals. There is even a video on YouTube that shows one coupled up with a Boss OD-3 Overdrive…I do it too. It's nice to have one set for crunchy rock and the other set for searing leads and sustain…but I am also guilty of engaging both of them at the same time! As with just about any distortion pedal out there, the higher the gain, the more the noise, but all in all, this pedal holds the noise level down while keeping a strong tone that if need be, any noise gate could easily manage…I don't use one. The Level control can act as a lead boost if you cut back on the Drive. You really can't get rid of the distortion effect, but you can minimize it to a point that it will behave like a boost with a little grit behind it and most times this works just fine, especially live. As of July 2012 the average price for the Boss DS-1, used, in good condition is nineteen to thirty dollars. The higher being free shipping and original factory box. The other factor are the older models made in Japan go for a significantly higher price (sixty to one hundred dollars) to people who collect vintage gear or have discriminating tastes. With the abundance and affordability of these pedals I say, "Why not have it in your arsenal?" If you set your unity gain and tone to be "seamless", it is worth twenty bucks to have it there & ready to kick in when you need to hold a high note (or any note) extra long without worry…and if nasty is your thing, this pedal can get really nasty set to anything past 11 o'clock. (Which is only 1/3rd of the way "up".) This pedal also doubles as a great little gift for a budding rock star. It is cheap and it provides good distortion, which is what they are most likely looking for, until they get good enough to deserve a two hundred & fifty dollar pedal. I, myself have many expensive pedals, play professionally (26 years) through a large rig and have this pedal at home in my "Boss Chain." If you play between the boundaries of Metal to Hard Rock, you will love this pedal! I've own this pedal for years and it has made some eyes pop and gotten me compliments from all sorts of Musicians to include professional ones. Its very versatile and can literally make any rig scream! Even very simple setups like a decent solid state amp and a cheap guitar.I found That really clean amps like Fenders, and Rolands can really make this baby shine due to its high gain and very distorted nature. This pedal is very responsive and has so much attack its insane. The other cool thing about this pedal is the built in noise gate which really helps clean up the hiss of the gain. it also has a mids scoop similar to the signature Dime distortion pedal. This definitely beats all pedals similar to it like the Boss Metal zone, the T-rex bloody mary, Dime Distortion and many other famous pedals. I love howthis pedal has can get many famous sounds like Randy Rhoads, Disturbed, Pantera, Early metallica, All That Remains, Ratt, Van Halen, Godsmack, and more. The only thing about it that some people may not like is that the pedal does have a little bit more controls than average ones and that its high gain maybe too much for some. However I found that if you roll the gain down and mess with the frequency knob and equilizers, you can get a more Crunchy overdrive sound. This pedal is a one trick pony – brutal sounding heavy metal. It can run the gauntlet of thrash, modern, nu, and classic metal – everything from old school Dio and 1980s Metallica to Pantera to Trivium to Avenged Sevenfold. It can scoop the mids out entirely for the dry … And Justice for All sound with the push of a button while the push of another button can enable a nice percussive sound and prevent any bleedthrough of extraneous sound. Using mids dial on this pedal is not a bad thing … it shouldn't be turned down unless specifically needed for a certain sound. Mine is actually set around the 1 o'clock position. Where care needs to be used is actually with the low and especially the high (where it can sound like an annoying chain saw if turned up). Take time and care with dialing in the sound. It is easy to get a brutal sound if used properly and not the high pitched awful whine that you might find on demo videos on YouTube. Definitely recommend using this pedal on the clean channel. Boosting it with an overdrive pedal isn't necessary or useful.JGB
Overall: I have been using my tried and true Boss Metal Zone into a Boss 7 band EQ for a few decades. I had been looking at getting the Waza Craft Metal Zone before my old Metal Zone takes a dump on me, but I also wanted to see what else is out there. I watched a video review of the MXR Fullbore Distortion and was impressed, but not enough to buy one. Well! My fiance took care of that for me and ordered it for me as a surprise. I plugged it in right away the day it got here. I plugged it into my 7 band EQ. I kinda gave it a half ass listen and wasn't impressed. I picked it back up and figured I would exchange it for a noise gate as that is what I needed more. It sat there for a week or so and I decided to give it another chance. I plugged straight in to the front of my half stack and used a suggested setting I found online. I had to back off on my maps EQ across the board and just tweak it. What I heard was something that sounded familiar and new at the same time. I cranked it up and tried the on board noise gate and it works great! Basically it's a distortion, EQ and a noise gate in one pedal. I tried my old set up side by side with this pedal and the fact that this one pedal eliminated 2 other pedals in the chain was what finally sold me. I love this thing. It likes high gain pickups. My Strat with a Seymour Duncan TB 6 Distortion in the bridge sounds like a flame thrower! Distortion is a very personal thing. Not everybody will love it. So far everybody who has listened to me says that it sounds insane, badass, etc. For the music I play it fits. It's an all around sound I can use on everything I cover on guitar. To me that's the goal to have one sound do it all. I'm very happy that I kept it and gave it another try. One thing to remember is that with this pedal it's okay to back everything down and especially on your amp. Usually I would put everything in the middle and adjust my Distortion and EQ around that. With this pedal I have the amp's EQ, everything on 2-3. This could be the Distortion sound your looking for.Jon

Would give it 4 and a half stars for what I use it for. This is the only distortion pedal on my board now. I also have Od and boost. It is what it says- dark. Sounds great through my Fender amps with tele or les Paul. I can get muff type fuzz or just dark and dirty. Controls are excellent and usable live. Toggle switch gives barely noticeable change in sound. Have read that these pedals can develop problems with the pots.. time will tell. I use it for 60s garage rock Sonics- Kinks- Pretty Things- Them- really fits the bill. Has knocked my fuzz pedal off the board. I'm a songwriter and only do studio work, and in the early 2000's there was a lot of new modeling amps, multi-effects units, and plug-ins coming on to the scene. I somehow rationalized I didn't need my JCM2000 DSL-50/1960A half-stack anymore – I've been searching for that tone since. I've researched, auditioned, and purchased numerous pedals in my quest to get that sound back, so when I heard a couple of TC's sample sounds (specifically Crunch – "Goin' Crazy") – my quest was over. To be honest, I would have been happy with just that one tone, but this is more than a one trick pony. First, it responds very well to the volume control and picking dynamics – that is extremely important to me. My main pedal board is full of TC pedals, so I was pleased to discover yet another excellent TC product. It has the same active tone controls and layout as my Spark Booster (also highly recommended), and it plays well with other overdrive pedals – like my TC Nova Drive. In the up position the voice switch provides a bit of extra cut, while the down position yields a warmer sound for rhythm playing, or to take a bit of the edge off of a single-coil. By itself, it won't really get you to modern metal tones, but used in conjunction with the right overdrive – it wails! I've used the pedal with passive and active pickups, humbuckers and single-coils – I have yet to find a combination that doesn't yield good results if you work at it. I can't say that it will make a solid state amp sound like a Marshall stack, but in front of a tube amp – it will provide a rich tonal palette to play with.troubadour
I had this pedal — let it go and got it back – thank goodness. For 15 years I have used an Xotic BB Preamp. It's become an industry standard and it's an incredible pedal but since I switched to Quilter Amps I haven't been able to utilize the volume beyond unity gain (which can also act like a Rangemaster) and have been totally dependent on the Gain. I like a Super Lead voice and the BB Pre is more of a JTM45 voice with excellent tone controls but limited gain. My Dark Matter simply has more Super Lead voiced gain on tap. I use open back cabs loaded with a V-30 and a G12H-30 and with my TC Volume set at unity, my Treble at noon, my Bass at 3-4 and my Gain around 1:30, I really get the SL sound I want. I'm using custom Briggs Pandora low output A4 "PAF"s (7.7k & 6.8k) and it's Cream, Zep, Angus etc all day long. BTW – it stacks incredibly well with my BB if I want a little more saturation.William Lyerly

I found one cheap and used and bought it with no preconceived notions. This pedal chugs and grinds in its own unique way. Not like a Bogner Red, Wampler Triple Wreck, or HK Warp Drive (all great pedals). You can play dissonant chords and it will evenly drive each note (A Vox Satchurator does this too, but the Metal Core has INSANE amounts of usable bass). I play through two 4×12's with V30's and G12T100's and it THUMPS! Turn down the gain and it backs down and lightens up. Works great with delay/time based effects.DaveMan
You can get every pedal in the world and BOSS is just going to tear them up and be the ones you want to go back to. The BOSS ml-2 is simply that distortion pedal you are looking for to carry you over the top in sustaining notes feeling like you're playing on butter, yet ripping that growling crunching chug you want to push thru the mix. Try using it also with a overdrive pedal and turning the ml2 distortion level down to about 7.5. Then use the overdrive to kick it back in for your leads. THE ML-2 METAL CORE IS… BOSS IN "BEAST MODE!!!" Hands down my favorite "Metal" Distortion pedal by Boss. They got everything right on this one. Deep thundering distortion that's up in your face. It's a very modern sound that's very defined yet clean enough to enjoy. I'm probably one of just a few who happen to own every distortion and medal pedal made by Boss. Each were designed for specific tones in the search for that perfect sound. While some are lacking to be honest numerous are very good. The ML-2 "Metalcore" is great. If you like the MT-2 "Metal Zone", you'll love this Beast! It's the sound I always wanted but couldn't quite dial in. Sounds great. Also surprising versatility with the HP/LP settings. One criticism is that its very loud. Slotting in after 2 boosts and an OD, then before a fuzz has played havoc with my gain structure as, with those other pedals operating within normal vol ranges, I've found the volume on the OCD needs to be most of the way down when using drive greater than 12-o-clock which is even more noticeable on the HP setting. I needed something to stack along side of my TS that did not overpower the sound of the other pedal or sound too thick on its own. This pedal sounds fantastic with single coil pickups and pairs extremely well with other OD pedals. I like the fact it can run on either battery, 9V, or 18V AC connections, making this a great choice if you have limited ports on your power supply. On its own, it stands out very well when dialing up the drive settings and it sounds absolutely great coming through a properly dimed tube amplifier. It is no coincidence you see these pedals on the boards of many great professional players… This box just has excellent tone and all their products are handmade in the USA with plenty of care involved–making them a quality purchase. I've owned the Fulltone OCD for just over a week now and I can confidently say it's the best overdrive effects pedal I've ever had the pleasure of using. It has a sturdy build, it's versatile, it retains the original tone and colour of your guitar/amp combo and it's LOUD! I wanted a pedal that would fit compliment my '65 Twin Reverb Reissue amp and Telecaster, I love the tone of my setup but I really needed some bite in the shape of a good overdrive. After doing some research and seeing the name Fulltone OCD pop up again and again I started to get very curious about this pedal, the clincher was when I saw it on the pedal board of a guitarist on youtube who was showing off some of my favourite licks! I am an avid pedal enthusiast, as my 42 pedal pedalboard will attest; and I have had a few flangers before, but ABSOLUTELY NOTHING compares to Josh's flanger. I can get this pedal to do three things: a very subtle reverb that adds a touch of space, a room-like reverb, and a super long-tailed ambient reverb that's so expansive it almost sounds like it's mixed with delay. There are other reverb pedals for a bit more money that have more options built into them-spring, plate, hall, room, shimmer, modulated reverb, and so on. With this pedal I find it difficult to switch between the different sounds since it's a lot of knob fiddling. It does sound absolutely killer, which is why I gave it 4 stars, but I don't recommend it if you want to easily switch between different types of reverb. For me it will be more of a "set and forget" pedal for long ambient reverbs.Andrew
I was recently using one pedal board for all my guitars, and the chorus I had was mainly designed for use with acoustic guitar. Now I'm rearranging things to have one board just for my electric guitars and all I needed was a basic chorus pedal of quality build and tone. I knew from reviews the JHS 3 series was perfect for me. I've been playing for 57 years and have owned pedals in the $100 to $500 range to provide my chorus effects. No matter if I had mulitple options in some stomp boxes I usually settled on a good subtle setting, so I knew there was no need for me to get anything fancier than the JHS. "I got a ROCK!" – Charlie Brown This pedal is an awesome JTM45 emulator. It can get those nice Marshall sparkles, and it is more than capable of driving your amp through a wall. This pedal is super articulate and can give any amp that classic brown sound. I have AB'd this pedal and a 1990's Marshall Drivemaster. Both the JHS and Marshall are copies of the 1990's Marshall Guv'nor pedal. There is almost no difference between the pedals (which is a great thing) and the Charlie Brown is quite a bit quieter. If you dig the sounds of Angus Young and classic Marshall models, give this guy a chance. JHS Pedals are crazy sturdy, so you never have to worry about some blockhead damaging or breaking it. This is the best overdrive pedal ever!! I am a tone snob and have had or tried pretty much everything over the years (at least once!). I was a HUGE Marshall fan throughout the years. I have always been very leery of distortion pedals as most never really sounded that good. In fact, when I played out, I always A/B/Y'd at least two Marshall half stacks for rhythm/boost to get that true tube tone. After turning 50 I sold everything and retired. The only thing I kept was my 1965 original Fender Princeton to noodle on. I got the itch to start playing again and heard about JHS pedals. I bought the Angry Charlie as it promised "Marshall tones." Came a few days ago and I fired it up. Holy moly!! This pedal is PHENOMINAL!!! Very responsive and the tone/volume/drive knobs are very sensitive and responsive!! I played it with my Firebird V and Music Man Albert Lee. This gosh darn little Princeton truly sounds like an old school Marshall!! This pedal is worth EVERY PENNY!! I love this thing! I wanted a pedal that would be a great hi gain option for my pedal board, and this won my pedal shoot out. I think this thing is perfectly balanced for what it is. While the distortion sound my hearken to an 80's or 90's tone more instead of a modern metal tone, the range of distortion you can get can go from hard rock all the way to metal. The EQ controls make it especially versatile. I also like how you could really hear all of the notes when you play a chord, but it still maintained that grit you get from a Marhsall's distortion. Plenty of low end; again, the EQ on this thing is great. This has to be one of the best distortion pedals on the market. Throughout my playing career I've always wanted a Marshall Shredmaster, but they are harder and harder to come by in good condition. I think this pedal fills that void particularly well. Super cool and versatile distortion. the noise gate, extremely powerful mid control, and weight knob features allow you to dial in a range of high gain sounds from van halen to meshuggah – it even is very useful in less heavy styles of music. it's a double barrel pedal (the same circuit twice), so you can have two drastically different distortions on tap with ease. also a great tool in the studio. definitely worth the hype and price.i bought it mint and used it on maybe 3 gigs. i'm selling because the band i was using it for broke up so i no longer have a use for it. listing as "excellent" instead of "mint" because i removed the rubber feet to more easily mount to a pedal board and then promptly misplaced them. there is also a small amount of velcro residue (see picture). comes with original box, foam padding, users manual, and empress sticker.

Have still to explore all the tonal possibilities of this aptly-named dual distortion pedal but first impressions have been very positive. The unit is smaller and lighter than I expected but the two foot switches are well separated. With six controls for each channel plus shared 'hi' and 'lo' EQ there are plenty of tone-shaping options. The user manual helpfully suggests some settings to get you started. The internal noise gate has so far proved very effective left on the 'natural' setting. You can adjust the threshold to suit your guitar's output, but having used the pedal with guitars loaded with vintage, medium output and hot humbuckers, I've found no need to alter the default factory setting. If you're in the market for a versatile high-gain distortion pedal I would strongly recommend taking a look at this one.Christopher D.

Nice sound variations, available! Easy to use, I like the Series/Blend feature, Series gives more distortion and Blend allows you to adjust one or the other in variable amounts. Controls are well done, like they should be. The distortion has a quality about it, which is hard to describe in words. All types of distortion is available, from light to heavy, but with a high quality, not heard/seen often. The battery compartment is a nice feature, better than anything else out there. Easy, and effective, no opening up the housing, no screws to loose, like on most pedals. I would buy again!Alex
I don't see alot about this one and I'm not sure why. It covers everything from light overdrive to distortion. You're probably not gonna get metal tones, but for blues and rock it's awesome. The blend knob means you can dial in how much dirt you want. It works with humbuckers, single coils and P90s to make a tube amp sing.Brennan

This is the amazing Boss DS-1 distortion pedal, loved by all who use it. Amazing value at just £55. I won't bore you with stories about how robust it is, because we all know Boss equipment lasts forever. It looks and feels great, but most importantly, sounds incredible. I play punk rock, and with my Gibson SG Special, plugged into my Marshall JCM 900 this delivers exactly the sound I want. I loved that in the manual it gives example sound setting, one of which was British Punk. That just made me smile. I knew instantly it was right up my street. Oh, and if you're into electronics, this thing is made of pin-through-hole components, so it leaves it open for a good bit of modding. There are plenty of guides for that online. Now I don't hate it, but Its not my first go to pedal. I like the more modern BOSS "Metal Core". It is however like all BOSS PEDALS built like a tank, extremely reliable and a great first pedal. For the money, this is a super value. I found that I like it for "Gain Stacking" in combination with the BOSS MD-2"Mega Distortion" and a few other pedals. Even two DS-1 DISTORTION together improve the performance to me. Overall it's not terrible and I see were for some it could really be a price but I lean towards Heavy… Heavy Metal and for that it's more a corvette when you need a Lamborghini. I have a 60w Fender Deville amp. Lovely clean sounds straight from the amp but couldn't really use the overdrive channel without the volume getting to an inconsiderate level at home. This pedal has addressed that issue really well. This pedal now provides me really raunchy distortion while providing a greater control for volume. The pedal also provides a nice boost in changing between a clean channel directly from the amp and then through the pedal. Very pleased with this investment, particularly for the price. I have playing guitar for over 20 years. This is a totally new distortion for me. I have tried several others that were excellent, like some MXRs, this is even better I think. I have had the DS-1 in the past but then I upgraded to the Boss Metalzone MT2 and the Boss MetalCore ML2. Both excellent buy more metal. You can play rock, metal, blues, almost anything with the Boss DS-1X. The high and low have a wide range. The Distortion control changes the contour also adds more treble/high as it goes up. At lower values you can use it with split humbuckers or two single coils for very crunchy TS9 boosted over drive SRV type tones. This is what I like about this. Great sound with neck and brigde humbuckers and split coils. In my setup i use Evolution7, Deactivator pickups. As you play up to higher frets, the sound stays thick very smooth. On low strings it stays relevant, without being boomy. the sound morphs in sutbtle ways if you play to very low strings. it is a totally new effect, not just a distortion.NoNickName1
As I transition from PODs to stomp boxes, this is the first distortion I buy. The online reviews are good. I recommend Pete Thorn's sound test as it's a demonstration in detail. After trying it out myself I cannot but agree with everyone. It's NOT a improvement of the old DS-1. It's a whole new beast!
