Overall: What can I say, this thing saved my guitar tone. I can crack my all tube output and capture 100 percent tone now. Before I was always worried about not only that but im recording in a townhouse there is nowhere in my place i could isolate the amp even if it wouldn't bother gf or neighbors. This thing is awesome i bought a 4 dollar goose neck for the mic inside threw in a shure sm57 and just listen through my monitors or headphone, Finally i've got the perfect tone always waiting for me. I run the sm57 into a chandler tg2 and into the computer, the front end is a digitech 2101 into a bogner line 6 spider amp. awesomeness !! Ive heard people say these are to boxy sounding and I don't agree, with an eq handy and some good pres and guitar effects your set to go it sounds awesome.Nathen
You'll notice in photos that the sound deadening is gray and fibrous. The one I received from AMS is upgraded with the egg crate type acoustic foam. This is one step in upgrading the cabinet that I don't have to do, now. There is still no foam at the bottom of the cabinet, which is fine. It can be added easily. Some upgrade with another gooseneck, but I found a way around that in buying an MXL DX-2 microphone. It has two capsules built in that you can use either side of or blend together, but still use the single gooseneck and output. The cabinet uses a Celestion Vintage 30 at 8ohms. It is not dead quiet, but at a decent level it be low enough to not upset your neighbors at all. I would not recommend turning your tube amp up to 10, but you an turn up a 100 watt head at 2-3 and get a nice overall sound. You just need enough of the speaker moving. Very happy with the product.
Picked one up to do recording. Sounds great. Reduces volume so I don't drive the neighbors crazy. Yes the hinges rattle but that does not effect the recording sound so far. May I will try some duct tape. The mic holder is pretty much stationary. But it just a straight mic stand section. So you could use any mic stand accessories. I added 5 – 12" x 12" acoustic foam squares under the speaker to tighten up the sound a bit. It has rubber feet on the bottom so no vibration into floor and it does not scoot around. I am pleased with my purchase. I bought this as a scratch and dent The hinge screws stripped out. I replaced them with larger diameter 3/4" long scre s and they are very sturdy now. I recorded with this in my hallway, and I was using my monitors. No sound from monitor bled into recording. And I cranked the amp pretty loud, but the volume was nowhere near annoying with the lid closed. I recommend this iso cab. 30w vintage delection.Spoiled dog studios

Reviews:
I bought this to record audio in the field as I had no access to a studio. I needed something quick and inexpensive. The box did prevent ambient sound from getting into the recording and the audio worked well enough for the project. However, the sound proof foam was hard to work with because it's too flimsy to stand on its own. The box include a tape like substance for the top edge but it didn't hold the foam. The foam for the side would also fall over. I tried using two-sided tape but it wouldn't stick to the foam. I even tried Gaffer's tape but it also would not stick to the foam. I ended up holding the foam up while the audio was being recorded. In the end it worked fine but dealing with the foam was not fun.Dan B.
Main issue, foam constantly falls and droops. I suppose they could be used in a pinch but they are falling apart from day one. It doesn't even make sense how the foam is supposed to stay in there. Something simple like Velcro or a binder clip could greatly improve the foam attachment.Demetrious
For anyone on a budget, needing sound-proofing to reduce background noise while recording, this portable booth box may be just what you are looking for. I live in an apartment and I have limited space for a recording studio, so my recording facility must be compact. And because I live in an apartment — a studio to be specific — background noise and ambient sound is ever-present. The PSIB27 effectively creates a sound barrier around my MIC, cutting noise substantially. However, this sound-proof box alone, will not eliminate background noise entirely for me and my situation. To further increase noise reduction, I have to use the "noise reduction" feature in either Cool Edit or Audacity — the recording/editing software I use to make my recordings. Of course, if you live in a quieter area or have a room that is better isolated from background noise, the PSIB27 may shield background noise even more … maybe even 90 to 100 percent. But I will not make the claim that this item will absolutely eliminate your background noise. Your results, like mine, will vary. However, for the price and compact, space-saving design, I am satisfied with the results I have achieved, using the PSIB27.ifthepriceisright

4. Radial Engineering J48 Mk2 Direct Box, 48v, Phantom Power Active
Product Details:
The radial j48 is a great-sounding active direct box that has been optimized to produce maximum headroom while working within the limited current available from standard 48v phantom power. by employing a unique switching power supply, the j48 is capable of peak transients to 9 volts without choking. the result is lower harmonic distortion, half the inter-modulation distortion and significantly improved dynamics over other dis. features include a -15db pad, 180 degree polarity reverse, a unique merge function to mix two signals to mono, an 80hz high-pass rumble filter, and ground lift. like all radial products, the j48 is built to handle the abuse on the road and features a unique welded i-beam construction for years of trouble free performance. the single most important development goal of the radial j48 was increasing the headroom without compromising sound quality. to this end, every possible effort was made to deploy the limited energy resources of phantom power to the audio signal path. to begin, phantom power is converted using a super-efficient digital switch-mode power supply that steps up the internal rail voltage to an impressive 10 volts. this allows one to hit the j48 with as much as 9-volts without choking! to further increase available horsepower, all non-essential devices such a power-hungry leds are turned off when the j48 is in use. a typical led requires almost as much current as does the complete audio circuit! welded i-beam construction makes it impossible to torque the pc board. this virtually eliminates cold solder joints, the number one cause of system failure in the field.

I may buy a couple more of these. I purchased this phantom powered DI box to help boost the gain from a Markley pickup on an accounting guitar. This box made a big improvement! I used to run the gain at max and then got a weak feed with poor clarity. This box makes it sound like a different guitar. The signal is much stronger and a great deal more head room. I now run the gain at about 50% and get a much warmer sound from the pickup. This phantom powered DI was weel worth the money! It also is a clean signal with no A/C hum from the phantom power. I do sound for a church worship team and some sideline gigs. A very sturdy metal box and good looking setup. Good value for the price.
The Radial J48 is my go-to direct box for studio work and live performance. It sounds exactly as it should, and it is bullet-proof reliable. It is great using phantom power and not worrying about batteries! As a bass player I never use the low cut, but the ground lift has been a lifesaver a couple of times, and the pad works as expected with no change to the sound quality. I even had one time where the phase button came in very handy in a coffee house where the house speakers were out of phase, and their mixer didn't have a phase button. I was about to go back to my car and retrieve an XLR cable that swaps pin 2 and 3, but then I noticed the 180 degree button on the J48, and it solved the problem of my bass amp being out of phase with the house speakers.jmbrawn
I have owned other DI boxes but none so good as this one. Yes, there are cheaper DI boxes in the marketplace. You also get what you pay for. I like this Radial Engineering JDI box so well, that I purchased a passive DI box, the Radial Engineering JDI the next day. I will never need to replace either one of these.Chuck the bassman

Reviews:
The Joyo Cab Box has to be one of the best value cab IR loaders available, especially considering it's features. Not only has it got a good range of pre-loaded IR's, it also allows you to load up to 10 more of your own IR choices. It also has 128 patches you can edit and create to your hearts content. When combined with the built in pre-amp, microphone and EQ sections that you can also edit extensively, if you can't come up with the sound you are after, I would be astonished. Spoiled for choice really. Additionally it has a good range of I/O's including MIDI, USB and XLR, plus standard 1/4 inch. Only potential negatives from my point of view would be that you cannot use the inbuilt Microphone choices and related settings with the 10 IR's you can self load. Having said that, if you are already happy with the sound of the IR's you are loading, you probably don't need to edit them further in any case I guess. So this is not a deal breaker. Some people may also prefer stereo I/O's. This unit is just mono, but that is fairly common across many cab emulators and mono works fine for me. Personal preference really, but if you use the unit with a modeller such as the Line 6 Pod HD Pro etc., you can use your effect loop to slot the Joyo in before a stereo effect such as reverb splits thesignal anyway. So not a big issue I'd say, but depends what you are trying to achieve. Maybe you could just by 2 of them if you want 2 different cab sounds 🙂 Overall, this is an excellent unit for the money and has been working well for me so far.grantfs

Reviews:
EVERY musician at some point will need a direct box. This Nady DB1 is a great value for the money. You should have one in your gig bag or on your pedal board or in your home studio. Some sound guys like it when you already have your own direct box with you. You may see that direct boxes can be real pricey when you go shopping for them but with this direct box you can scratch up enough coin to get it. IF you play live and also have an amp here is a cool thing those new to a direct box might like to know. You can plug your guitar cord into the 1/4 inch input on the direct box then take another guitar cord and plug it into the out side of the direct box and that will i turn plug into your amp then you take a mic cord and plug it into the XLR connection and then that will go into the channel on the snake that more that likely you sound guy will plug into or you will be told what number it will plug into. now your amp can be used as a stage monitor , the sound guy can put some guitar or bass in the monitors and the sound guy can mix your sound so the audience hears you well. That is how to use this type of direct box. Now that part that says ATT next to those 1/4 inch jacks, that is a way to adjust how hot the input signal is. i believe you can plug in an instrument with active electronics by switching to – 20dB or -40dB. active pickus and electronics are a bit on the hot side so switch the switch accordingly. On the XLR side you will see a ground switch and if you ever need to use that switch you will need something to stick in the hole like the tip of a pen or something that will poke in the hole to actuate the switch. Sometimes you may need to do that and that is how it is done. Be gentle it is a little switch. on other DI boxes that is called a ground lift and uses a different style switch. this direct box is metal and that is strong. IF you want to install this on your pedal board you have a couple ways to do this. velcro or screws. Get one today you will save cash.RLJ MUSIC
I reserve 8 as my standard top rating so that when I find a truly amazing product, there is headroom for a 9 or 10. In my system 8 is very very good. Priced reasonably, quality product, has all the right features. Definitely would buy more if I neede more… Bought this particular box because it has 'speaker' mode whereby you can tap a monitor speaker (amp line up to 600w) and get a line level signal out of it suitable for piping directly to in-ear monitor rig. Has all the normal features of DB. Built very well, protective guards sticking out so that switches and jacks are protected. Looks indestructible. Was priced lowest of those DB's that had the 'speaker mode' but I have bought PROCO products before and have never had an issue. Price was lowest, but does not suffer from quality or performance problems.
Ok, I bought 2 of these to kill a bad buzz I have from a loop feedback coming from a line that I have to feed each week in a club setting. This feed is to also offer my program music to the "house" system as well throughout the bar/restaurant area. So I put one of them inline and no change at all. I lifted the ground, still no change. I opened the second box (and found that it was a return because there were screws missing around the inputs) and this one didn't work either. I changed cables, lifted/unlifted grounds, no change in the buzz. I also already had another DI Box (which cost me Sixty and used that one and it WORKED! So this tells me that this is very poorly made and not worth the under twenty I spent for each of them. VERY disappointed as well as I'm receiving used merch from Musician's Friend. NOT COOL. I'm still gonna try this someday soon with a live setup to see if it works but I doubt it… Don't waste your money. Buy a DI Box that's gonna work but you will have to spend over forty I'm sure.BillAudioGuy

I've tried to make this work. Bought it because it was cheap and I was building an affordaboard. Not sure where the problem lies but the bass gain is huge and the mid notch adjustment has a pretty good range as well. I don't really think there's anything wrong with it per se, but I just couldn't get it to sound good. I'm a singer/songwriter and my acoustic has to fill a wider frequency spectrum than if I was playing with a full band. This just didn't work for me. I saved and got the NUX Optima Air and it is amazing, albeit 5 times as expensive.Estaban
i recently had my '72 Martin D-35 restored by the factory. It is better than new and I applaud the job they did. However, in that era, acoustic-electrics were rare. Sometime in the '70s, I installed a Barcus-Berry pickup. It was a glued on transducer that pushed a very weak signal.to an amp or PA. In order for it to be useful, a pre-amp was necessary. I have owned both Barcus Berry and Fishman pre-amps to boost this guitar. Given the fact that I haven''t played that guitar in public since 2004, and have moved twice since then, it was no surprise that I could find them. Looking for a low cost alternative, I decided to risk the money in bonus cash on this AD121.. It was more than I had hoped for. Electronics have come far in the past 40 years. I got the unit to boost the signal, not for the effects, but this allows me to tune the sound to what I want. It even works pushing a Fender Tele straight into a PA. I couldn't be more pleased.Walter L
Instructions given on a card about the product is brief, some explanations or functions are just not too well described. I connected an acoustic guitar with a Fishman pickup fixed to the sound hole of my guitar and connected to input channel and connected the output channel to a Roland's Cube 20X amplifier. With all set up normal no differences could be heard. I purchased this product for recording guitar sound on Garageband on a Macbook pro. Signal amplitude was no different to connecting guitar without this pre-amp. It failed to raise the output to the line level. I will not use a pre-amp with guitar in futurefunt21

I fretted and researched and watched reviews on YT… finally pulled the trigger on an MXR iso power source. I only run a few pedals. Never really got into the giant pedal board thing. The MXR M238 is way more than I will ever need or use. I bought it to give the few pedals I do have a quality isolated power source. I was using a power all which works great for a couple of low power consuming pedals. The MXR M238 is a quality piece of gear and I highly recommend it. It has two adjustable plugs that range from 6-15v which is awesome for those pedals that can take variable voltage without blowing up. With the variety of power plugs available it is super flexible and I feel certain this would power a large board if you daisy chained maybe 2-3 of your low power consuming pedals to a higher mA plug. There's so many options with this unit, that was the deciding factor for me when buying this. It's built like a tank in an all metal enclosure. It came with extra DC power cables. The biggest surprise is how small it is. It isn't much bigger than your average size effect pedal.mathewsguitarworks
After researching the various pedalboard power supplies, the ISO-Brick seemed to offer the best bang for the buck for me. It has a generous number of isolated DC outputs (10 total). I was particularly impressed that there was a generous range of amperage ratings for the 6 dedicated 9V outputs that were available (2x100mA, 2x300mA and 2x450mA). While the 100mA outputs are adequate for overdrives and some other analog pedals, the 300 and 450 mA 9V outputs are particularly helpful for driving digital pedals. I have a variety of TC Electronic pedals, so the additional amperage compared to competing products was an important selling point for me. The ISO-Brick also offers two 18V/250mA outputs, which works great for my Pigtronix Tremvelope. There are also two variable voltage outputs (6-15V) rated at 250 mA. Each of these two outputs have a tiny pot to adjust the voltage and the only marking between 6-15V is for 9V. I would have preferred at least one dedicated 12V output at greater than 300mA to drive my TCE Nova Repeater. Instead, I am using a 9V 450mA output for the Repeater. The lower voltage limits the headroom the Repeater but it is rated from 9-12V and seems to work fine. My ISO-Brick came with ten 26-inch end-to-end DC supply cables. These cables seem to be reasonably good quality. Given the variety of outputs and the potential for confusion when connecting a bunch of pedals, color-coded cables and outputs would have been a nice touch but a little bit of colored electrical tape did the trick for me. I also appreciate that the ISO-Brick has a bright blue LED for each output to verify each is connected to a pedal. All in all, I am very pleased with the ISO-Brick. It does its job for minimizing noise and allows you to connect up to 10 pedals.Victor
I am running several pedals into my half stack Vai Legacy tube amp and getting a hum mainly from my boost pedal and compressor/sustain pedals. I bought a Furmin power conditioner and then the iso brick but still have a hum. I guess Ill just have to get a noise gate? (my old one died, maybe from too much noise! Lol). I researched several isolated power supplies and I believe this is a good value, but didnt solve MY problem. It may solve yours, but its hard to recommend something that didnt help me.imwrenscott

You have several options when not using a standard guitar amp. My particular use-case was that I wanted to plug into a computer interface, not have a shrill and weak sound while using distortion, and be able to record without having to crank my amp to maximum settings to get a good tone. If you try to use a distortion or other boost directly into the computer, you will probably get a shrill, high-frequency saturated sound; essentially you need a real guitar speaker to attenuate certain frequencies and give you that "balls," thick sound. This DI box was the solution for me. You can achieve a similar result with several "pod" like devices on the market, but I prefer using discrete pedals of my choosing, which isn't always easy or possible with multi effects units. With this, I can just run my typical setup to the unit instead of a regular amp, and still have a great sound. My main need was the cab sim and not the general DI functionality, but I can tell a major difference now when using a distortion pedal directly into the computer. It still isn't the same as miking an amp, but I feel it gives me a lot more versatility in my home studio, and I'm quite happy recording guitar tracks with this. Prior to using this device, I would scrap any guitar track I recorded that was not a miked amp. I now feel that I can get an album quality recording (yet still indy, not necessarily polished) with no amp. It can also be used to just plug into your band's PA system, but I haven't experimented with that so I can't comment. I am confident, however, that it would work just fine in that application. This would also be a great item for a keyboard player needing to plug into a house PA. The build quality on the outside seems excellent. The four rubber legs also help setting the unit down without slamming it. I'm very happy with the purchase, and with this price, you can't go wrong.Mirakus
Pro: + Easy to use: put a 9V battery in, plug your signal chain into it, output to audio interface. + Cabinet emulation is pretty good. Nothing to write home about but it definitely reduced the harshness of my overdriven black metal tone, making it much easier to work with in a mix. + Small and rigged. Metal case with rubberised feet mean it is most definitely usable for gigging. + Ground lift button got rid of humming that I had, BIG bonus! + Pad buttons help if your signal is excessively loud by reducing the level to prevent clipping (small LED to show if any clipping is occuring). Generally useful for active guitars among other uses. – Cabinet emulation is okay, nothing special and most certainly isn't as good as mic'ing up a speaker cabinet (though it's practically silent, so late night recordings can be done with ease). However, for the price and practicality this unit provides I don't see this as significant enough a negative to remove even a single star.desolator121
I am pleasantly surprised with this DI box. The only fault I have with it is the fact that you have to keep 9 volt batteries handy. Batteries do seem to have a long life in this thing, but it would be much nicer if you could just plug this thing in with a standard 9 volt barrel plug (like effects pedals). Most importantly it really does sound pretty good. I'm using mine with a Fender champion 600. Out of the amplifier's output to the Behringer DI, out of the DI to internal speaker (speaker level through the DI) and out of the XLR on the DI straight to the board. The only thing that is keeping the little Fender Champion 600's from creating massive tone is the small speaker and this solves that issue in a very big way. The sound I get is huge, warm, glassy, and very clear note definition. And my stage rig is unbelievably small now. It all fits very easily in the trunk of my car, and that's including 2 guitars. I recommend this DI for every guitar player.YadaYadaYada

I bought this for the attenuation to be able to run my amp all out without upsetting the neighbors. This unit does that well and so much more. Wall of Sound is amazing and has been my go to for direct recording since I first tried it. The DI feature is going to be great for live performances too— I demoed it with my PA and it sounds great— beats micing. The price is right too. I recommend this highly.
This is the most affordable loadbox I could find that had good reviews. I've been using it every day since I received it and it does a great job. I have all my tones from my tube amps while recording and playing silently. Complementary Wall Of Sound IRs sound great and this completely solves my problems with recording at home. I highly recommend it.Reviewed by Andertons Music Co.
Dead easy to use, speaker in goes to the thru (0 attenuation)or -20 DB out. Juice the output of your amp and keep the DB down. Works great with speaker or without. Comes w/Wall of Sound download thats a great gateway to IR and silent recording. Must have to not annoy family or neighbors. Or both. Highly recommendGearJunkie35

The Behringer DI600P does a simple task and does it well – turning an unbalanced signal into a balanced signal for use by a mixer. Not having to use phantom power to run it is a bonus for small mixers without this facility, and the ability to completely isolate the signal to avoid ground loops is a must. Its clean, transparent sound makes an honest representation through a modern PA system. Amp speaker input levels as well as instrument levels make this such a useful device to have in your gig bag, and the low price tag is the cherry on the icing. Wouldn't be without it!Graham M.
This is a 5/5 all day everyday for me. I've used one for regular live gigs over the last couple of years and have had no issues whatsoever. Used mainly for keyboards it has been hard wearing and built for purpose. I'm expanding a bit more in live performance and had no hesitation in buying 2 more. Great unit for the price.Mary M.

This is a basic no frills DI box. Nothing fancy here, but gets the job done well. I have bought many Pyle products and never had any issues. I know sometimes they get a bad rep because quality control will let a dud through every once in awhile. As for me, I have been lucky, I own several of these DI boxes and never once had an issue. Since they are so cheap I have extra just in case one was to malfunction. You can't build one of these for less than 10 dollars so what do you have to lose.Greg
The Pyle parent company, SoundAround USA (http://www.soundaroundusa.com/) knows that thousands, if not tens of thousands, of the recent version of this direct box are totally unusable out of the box. I recently ordered four of them… and all four were defective. I sought four replacements from the retailer… and all four replacements they sent me had the same defect. I appealed to the SoundAround company itself, clearly explaining the 100% defect, and they sent me four more replacements… and all four of them had the SAME DEFECT. If you look through some of the dissatisfied reviews here, you'll see exactly what the problem is: units manufactured in China (says "Made in China" in big print across the side) have loose/sloppy attenuator switches. There is no way to tighten them up, and solid contact inside is impossible to achieve. So there is either a noisy signal or no signal at all. Let this be your warning – this direct box is bad news. I have two older ones that work fine, but the newer ones are absolute junk! It's a shame the company chooses to pretend they aren't fully aware of what is going on, (and possibly illegal).thirty3na3rd3
This product, Pyle-Pro PDC21 Instrument To Balanced and Unbalanced audio lines, is the third one that I use as an interface between my Behringer MX-1604A mixer output to a Ham Radio transceiver Yaesu, Kenwood, or Icom microphone input, via a Heil CC-1 XLR Y-BAL Cable or generic cable. In this type of configuration, the Pyle-Pro PDC21, as an interface box, ensures impedance matching and hum reduction, with it's Ground Loop Lift circuitry. It's a cheap way to achieve excellent audio transfer.thundergod4u2

Reviews:
As soon as I plug in the guitar, I noticed how clean the signal was. I was able to crank up gain at the preamp without any noticeable increase in the noise floor. The box has a bit of weight to it, giving the impression of a solid build quality and I like the foam at the bottom to prevent slipping on the floor and noise if moved. Really great gear for the price!!!
A great DI is a staple for any live or recording rig. The DI is great to take an unbalanced device like an instrument and balance the device to match it's impedance to a mic preamp on a mixing console, audio interface, etc. Simply using a special cable or adaptor might get the connection right but it won't make the sound right. Samson uses a custom transformer to keep your sound clean and free of distortion. Typically a high impedance unbalanced cable run at longer lengths/using adapters etc will get noise, hum, more interference, capacitance, etc. By converting the signal to a balanced line you can run a longer cable run without degrading your sound. Another great feature is the thru put so you can send a signal straight to an amplifier or monitor without affecting the original audio. It also has a ground lift. So if you're on the market for a high quality reliable mono passive DI box but don't have tons to spend you gotta check out the Samson MD1.Nate M
When I say solid, I mean this Direct Box is built like a tank!! Not only is it extremely durable, the Md1 is also built with great components giving it a broad frequency response with low noise/distortion. It also has a ground/lift switch and is passive so it does not require a battery or phantom power. Don't rely on a venue to have the gear you need anymore! Pick up one of these and know you'll have good, reliable sound from your DI box!!Gerald @ Sam Ash #56
19. Mackie Mdb-1a Active Direct Box
Product Details:
The mackie mdb-1a is an active direct box designed to connect a single instrument'such as a guitar, bass, or keyboard to a microphone preamp for musicians and audio engineers in recording sessions, houses of worship, and live stage applications. it converts a high-impedance, instrument-level signal via its 1/4" ts unbalanced input to a low-impedance, mic-level output via its balanced xlr 3-pin jack. a 1/4" thru jack allows simultaneous connection to an amplifier or pedalboard. a -20 db pad reduces the input level to prevent distortion when using a high-gain source, and the ground-lift switch inhibits hum caused by ground loops. additionally, there are switches for polarity and a 120 hz high-pass filter. the merge function allows the thru jack to be used as a second, simultaneous input. due to its active design, the mdb-1a operates on phantom power. a sturdy steel chassis enables confident use in the studio or on the road.
