Overall happy with the gibson sg special. You can see on the guitar theres a couple of minor marks from the gibson factory. Nothing major. The string alignment is a little off. But dont mind. The low E string is closer to the top of the neck. I use my thumb alot so works out. If it was the other way around I might of sent it back. The electrics look good under the hood. Musicstore got the guitar very quickly to Ireland. Really good service with great updates. Very happy with the purchase:)
Alright, so the first one of these new SG Specials in Pelham Blue showed up with a giant crack (not finish checking) that wrapped from the input jack to the control panel. I knew I had to return it but tuned it up and noodled a bit and tested pickups to make sure it was worth the exchange. The guitar was so good I almost kept it. My girlfriend convinced me to return it for a new one and it's the best decision I've ever made regarding gear. I've had the new one for a few days and it is just better in every way compared to the damaged but also incredible guitar I originally received. The resonance, sustain, comfort, aesthetic, playability, P90s, even the smell… all perfect. Gibson even learned to cut a nut. The fretboard is darker (better), the setup and finish is better. It just feels and sounds better. There is no neck dive on this one, although the first one did have a neck heavy feel (nothing a leather/suede strap couldn't fix). I say all this to remind everyone that every guitar is different and just hope you get one with mojo. I went to a competitor today and played a new Les Paul Standard that was tagged at $1K higher than this SG. No comparison. I was laughing at how much better the SG was in every single department. I can't wait to take this on the road as my new #1 and I seriously doubt it will ever be topped. New or vintage. Gibson is taking this rebuild seriously, and these Original Collection models are the best step they could have taken.UglyRunnerMusic
I am astonished at how quiet the P90's are in this SG. The hum is negligible — substantially less than the high gains in my Rickenbacker and only barely more the Lace Sensors in my strat (which are 99% silent). I had anticipated ordering some hum-canceling Lindy's to go in there, but that won't be happening. These sound phenomenal. They're just about all I could ever want from a pickup. The guitar came with the neck set almost completely straight. Just a smidge of relief (the perfect amount, really). Fretwork is essentially perfect. No sharp ends, frets are perfectly even and well-polished. The action was set a bit high, but was fairly easy to remedy. So why 4 stars instead of 5? The lower set screw (high E side) on the lightning bar wraparound bridge arrived stuck. Under no tension, it could not be adjusted in or out with the 1/16 hex key on the included Gibson multi-tool. I had to use an extractor plier to get it out out of fear of grinding down the end of the hex. Upon inspection, some of the threads near the cup point on the screw were malformed. There were no issues with the screw on the upper (Low E) side. Tracking down a replacement #5-40 3/8" set screw in small (< 100) quantity was actually kind of difficult. A stuck screw on a bridge is not catastrophic, but it does seem like something that should have been caught in QA. Aside from the one issue, everything else was immaculate. Just picked this up, and still need to try it out with the full rig at full volume and with my standard strings (D'Addario NYXL). However, since I got it home I decided to play every Gilmour solo I know with crazy bends (like four half steps) and all, and it still was in tune after 2 hours of misstreatment with the factory set up. It has a rocky sound, wich goes well with my playing style of classical and latin rock, it will be interesting to try to get a clean tone however out of this beast..Chico76
This is my first time owning a Gibson. I've always played decent epiphones and fenders. Once I strapped this on and plugged it in, I knew my life had changed. Now that I'm in my 60's, jumping around on the stage with a 10lb Les Paul is no longer an option. I'd never even consider an SG, but it was so lightweigh I thought I'd give it a try. OMG why did I wait so long? This thing is a Rock 'n Roll time machine! Besides being incredibly lightweight and resonant, it sound amazing. And due to the double cut and neck joint construction, it's soo easy to play all the way to the 22nd fret. The wide slim taper neck is incredibly fast… and its light weight means no neck dive. I should have picked one of these up years ago!Steve
Yes, this guitar is 100% worth it. I wanted to wait a full year of owning the guitar to write this so that I'd be certain. There's too much good to write about this SG to be honest so to summarize I can't even call this guitar a rock and machine id call it a musical weapon. It sounds absolutely phenomenal which for me was the most important part. I'm used to strats which id been playing the last 18 or so in terms of playability, it def plays different but it plays really nicely. It has a lot more pop and feels stiffer. The finishing and everything else is top quality as well. Guitar is beautiful. Not only does the guitar sound awesome with literally any type of gain, but the cleans are extremely nice sounding as well. This guitar is the real deal, I waited a long time to pull the trigger on this thing and it was 1000% the right decision.Pd
If you're buying and enjoying an SG you're probably aware it's a unique and quirky instrument. The body is very light despite being all mahogany and it does suffer the classic neck dive and tuning stability issues common with Gibson guitars. But these are aspects of the guitar more than negatives in my opinion. It's a classic shape. It's very light weight and plays easily. If you don't like the Les Paul because of its chunky neck and thick neck pocket you may be pleasantly surprised by the thinner neck and upper fret access of the SG! It tends to be a darker sounding guitar with it's all mahogany body and neck with rosewood board and classic nickel fret wire. But I'm nit picking here. You only need listen to Angus Young's classic tones to hear how this guitar can cut thru a mix with the right amp. The medium jumbo frets and shorter scale length are great for easy bends. With volume and tone controls for each pickup you get a lot of control over the sound of the guitar. If tuning stability is an issue try pencil graphite or Nut Sauce to lube the well cut (usually well cut) nut. Gibson is unfortunately known for let's say less than perfect fit and finish on their instruments. You will probably see imperfections in the paint job and finish if you look closely enough. That's just par for the course with Gibson. But I'm a Gibson fan. They make instruments that don't sound like anything else and the SG is one of those iconic rock and roll machines! The 490r/498t set gibby has on this is….meh. 490r may stay, but I IMMEDIATELY yanked that 490t because it's just not aggressive err enough for high gain maps, so if your a rocker, you'll need to plan on that expense iut of the gate. As is typical with Grubsons quality standards of late, mine came with a complete handprint in the neck stain(wine red/cherry). Typical. Not PLEK'd, so the gorilla that set it up, did so with an Orangutan in mind. Again,….sadly typical. After filing the fret razors off, a wetsand on the neck, a 498t….NOPE…Seymor Duncan SH-6b P'up install at the bridge, a $180 pro setup w/ MAJORtruss road adjustment, fretleveling, polish, I was in business! Great lil spankplank, and started off affordable, but those of us in the know understand the horrible HORRIBLE Gib/Grubson guitars that should never have left that factory, (they were THAT unplayable), and purchased by inexperienced parents for their kids, and young, inexperienced players at GCs, etc, etc, and here they are on Ebay, for sale. THIS 2017 Grubson SG Special is a good one!….NOW…keep that in mind when your bidding! Auction price PLUS $500 (+ another $200 for a nickel vibrola I'm now adding, so $700 total) in fix and mods is your final. Minus $150 if that 490t works foray! Good Luck.guitarasaweapon
This guitar is very nice. Bought it as a open box that had been returned. It did have tons of Pickgaurd scratches but it was just the plastic so no harm done and the strings were already slightly rusted but no biggie. The guitars intonation was almost spot on and the action was great. The only fret buzz was on the low e string and only when playing hard (which I do). I bought the guitar because of the mini humbuckers which are actually 495r and 495t pickups in case anyone is wondering. They are GREAT for raunchy low gain rock all the way up to super high gain metal with pinch harmonics effortlessly. Clean tones were a different story. Way too thin with no bass whatsoever. Even maxing out the bass on my amp didn't come close to the bass of my Les Paul or even my strats. I was hoping this guitar could bridge the gap between my strats and my Les Paul and I think it did somewhat but I just couldn't accept the thin clean tones. i think if these pickups were in a Les Paul they would sound perfect but an Sg is already bright sounding so it's just too weak when playing clean. But if you want to rock out or shred this is a great guitar. The neck is thick but very comfortable even for average hands. The finish is very nice. Just a step above a "worn" model. The only other problem I had with the guitar were that the Frets were very sharp. Overall an excellent price on a good American guitar that will hold its value. Just fell a little shortnashvillian
Brighter in sound than the standard Gibson SG, the SG special has all the basic elements of the best selling Gibson of all time. First, it is lightweight. My first Gibson was a Les Paul Custom, and after playing three sets of forty-five minutes with one of those strapped to your shoulder you'll regret it the next day. Back pain and shoulder soreness await. Not so with an SG… most are less than seven pounds… compare that to a Les Paul which frequently weighs 9-10 pounds or more. If full access to the upper frets is important to you, the SG has what you're looking for. You'll notice that the cutaway is past the highest fret, whereas most other guitars do not come close. Why there are frets beyond the cutaway on guitars makes no sense. You can't reach them… so why are they there? Baffling. One reviewer complained that his new SG needed a professional set-up before it was playable for him. ALL new guitars need to be set-up. Acoustic or electric. New guitars DO NOT come from the factory tweaked to your liking, because the factory doesn't know you and what you like. If you don't want to pay a professional to set-up your guitar, there are many Youtube videos that show you exactly how to do it. Its not rocket science, but it does take some knowledge and patience and a few special tools. Also… another thing that makes this "special" so special is that its an American made Gibson for less than a grand. A rare occurence.

This is an absolutely stunning 63 sg special! i am listing this very hesitant! i am pretty much listing this and another guitar and whichever doesn t sell i will keep. this guitar is in stellar shape with very minimal signs of wear. i d say a few scratches here and there and maybe a scuff or two is the worst of it, but this thing is almost new.the gibson checklist is dated august 2021 so this thing is extremely fresh.original case and coa and all other paperwork included.

Overall happy with the gibson sg special. You can see on the guitar theres a couple of minor marks from the gibson factory. Nothing major. The string alignment is a little off. But dont mind. The low E string is closer to the top of the neck. I use my thumb alot so works out. If it was the other way around I might of sent it back. The electrics look good under the hood. Musicstore got the guitar very quickly to Ireland. Really good service with great updates. Very happy with the purchase:)
Alright, so the first one of these new SG Specials in Pelham Blue showed up with a giant crack (not finish checking) that wrapped from the input jack to the control panel. I knew I had to return it but tuned it up and noodled a bit and tested pickups to make sure it was worth the exchange. The guitar was so good I almost kept it. My girlfriend convinced me to return it for a new one and it's the best decision I've ever made regarding gear. I've had the new one for a few days and it is just better in every way compared to the damaged but also incredible guitar I originally received. The resonance, sustain, comfort, aesthetic, playability, P90s, even the smell… all perfect. Gibson even learned to cut a nut. The fretboard is darker (better), the setup and finish is better. It just feels and sounds better. There is no neck dive on this one, although the first one did have a neck heavy feel (nothing a leather/suede strap couldn't fix). I say all this to remind everyone that every guitar is different and just hope you get one with mojo. I went to a competitor today and played a new Les Paul Standard that was tagged at $1K higher than this SG. No comparison. I was laughing at how much better the SG was in every single department. I can't wait to take this on the road as my new #1 and I seriously doubt it will ever be topped. New or vintage. Gibson is taking this rebuild seriously, and these Original Collection models are the best step they could have taken.UglyRunnerMusic
I am astonished at how quiet the P90's are in this SG. The hum is negligible — substantially less than the high gains in my Rickenbacker and only barely more the Lace Sensors in my strat (which are 99% silent). I had anticipated ordering some hum-canceling Lindy's to go in there, but that won't be happening. These sound phenomenal. They're just about all I could ever want from a pickup. The guitar came with the neck set almost completely straight. Just a smidge of relief (the perfect amount, really). Fretwork is essentially perfect. No sharp ends, frets are perfectly even and well-polished. The action was set a bit high, but was fairly easy to remedy. So why 4 stars instead of 5? The lower set screw (high E side) on the lightning bar wraparound bridge arrived stuck. Under no tension, it could not be adjusted in or out with the 1/16 hex key on the included Gibson multi-tool. I had to use an extractor plier to get it out out of fear of grinding down the end of the hex. Upon inspection, some of the threads near the cup point on the screw were malformed. There were no issues with the screw on the upper (Low E) side. Tracking down a replacement #5-40 3/8" set screw in small (< 100) quantity was actually kind of difficult. A stuck screw on a bridge is not catastrophic, but it does seem like something that should have been caught in QA. Aside from the one issue, everything else was immaculate. Now that I'm in my 60's, jumping around on the stage with a 10lb Les Paul is no longer an option. I'd never even consider an SG, but it was so lightweigh I thought I'd give it a try. OMG why did I wait so long? This thing is a Rock 'n Roll time machine! Besides being incredibly lightweight and resonant, it sound amazing. And due to the double cut and neck joint construction, it's soo easy to play all the way to the 22nd fret. The wide slim taper neck is incredibly fast… and its light weight means no neck dive. I should have picked one of these up years ago!Steve
Yes, this guitar is 100% worth it. I wanted to wait a full year of owning the guitar to write this so that I'd be certain. There's too much good to write about this SG to be honest so to summarize I can't even call this guitar a rock and machine id call it a musical weapon. It sounds absolutely phenomenal which for me was the most important part. I'm used to strats which id been playing the last 18 or so in terms of playability, it def plays different but it plays really nicely. It has a lot more pop and feels stiffer. The finishing and everything else is top quality as well. Guitar is beautiful. Not only does the guitar sound awesome with literally any type of gain, but the cleans are extremely nice sounding as well. This guitar is the real deal, I waited a long time to pull the trigger on this thing and it was 1000% the right decision.Pd
If you're buying and enjoying an SG you're probably aware it's a unique and quirky instrument. The body is very light despite being all mahogany and it does suffer the classic neck dive and tuning stability issues common with Gibson guitars. But these are aspects of the guitar more than negatives in my opinion. It's a classic shape. It's very light weight and plays easily. If you don't like the Les Paul because of its chunky neck and thick neck pocket you may be pleasantly surprised by the thinner neck and upper fret access of the SG! It tends to be a darker sounding guitar with it's all mahogany body and neck with rosewood board and classic nickel fret wire. But I'm nit picking here. You only need listen to Angus Young's classic tones to hear how this guitar can cut thru a mix with the right amp. The medium jumbo frets and shorter scale length are great for easy bends. With volume and tone controls for each pickup you get a lot of control over the sound of the guitar. If tuning stability is an issue try pencil graphite or Nut Sauce to lube the well cut (usually well cut) nut. Gibson is unfortunately known for let's say less than perfect fit and finish on their instruments. You will probably see imperfections in the paint job and finish if you look closely enough. That's just par for the course with Gibson. But I'm a Gibson fan. They make instruments that don't sound like anything else and the SG is one of those iconic rock and roll machines! im a les paul guy but i got a sg with the 490 pups and i was shocked how good it sounded its a little thin but thats the sound but it has a mean very good distorted sound i did change the bridge pup out for a alternative 8 and made it even more a work horse its light and i can play it for hours with out the stress of the weight great for metal the mids are small pickup change should be highly reviewed on this guitar custom alt 8 steves special jbsmoky
I lost count of how many times I've watched the performance of AC/DC in the big stadium, in Munich I think, doing Let There Be Rock. I knew their hits but hadn't thought enough of them to buy an album all those decades ago when they were climbing the ladder rock stars climb. In the last year or so, I've bought 5 AC/DC CDs. There are a number of bands I like better, because I simply gravitated toward different bands back in the day, but it's fun to watch Angus working hard on stage for the fans. And, it's very interesting learning how Malcom was such an elite rhythm guitarist. I even bought an Easybeats CD. Gonna start learning Thunderstruck after the New Year. Overall: This is my umpteenth Epiphone custom sg guitar ive bought since the last guitar i had which was the more lower end 61 standard i bought here used last year. The caps pots and Gibson USA burstbuckers are definitely a step up in the right direction and are true to the original reissue Sg standards back in the beginning of the Gibson sg. It sounds like a 2000 dollar Gibson reissue sg but at Epiphone import prices. I intend on keeping this guitar for a lifetime and is a good backup guitar to my similarly pricef esp ltd viper 1000 deluxe i bought a year ago from a competitor in the now disconnected tiger eye finish from zZounds. Lastly i also intend on getting a real Gibson sg custom 63 version used for a discounted price. One more thing i might buy a backup les Paul sg standard by Epiphone just in case this one gets stolen or lost. Thank you Epiphone custom for stepping up your game and making better sg custom shop guitars than in the past. The black Epiphone sg custom with gold hardware is no joke either and i might another one when i get done paying for this Les Paul sg standard first fron here.Isaac
I got this guitar in sparkling burgundy and the finish is beautiful. The workmanship on this guitar is great; it feels very high quality. The fretwork is also really good, with no fret ends sticking out to cut my hands. That being said, the pickups are not very good. I initially debated purchasing the guitar since it sounded very ice-picky and thin when I played it in the store. But I decided to take a chance, knowing the return policy that GC has. I brought it home and the first thing I did was go over it completely. The fretboard was very dry. Even my wife, who doesn't play guitar, looked at it and commented on that. So removed the strings and polished the frets and cleaned/conditioned the fretboard. Then I swapped out the Alnico Classic Pro pickups, which are rather bad, and put in a set of Probucker 2/3 pickups that I had sitting around. Better strings, polished frets, and some nicer alnico 2 pickups made a huge difference. It sounds full and thick and warm, and it plays like an angel. I highly recommend it, as long as you can swap out the pickups.Robert
I've had the guitar for almost a month now & decided to do the review after I had it for a while. Quality control on this guitar was not very good. There was a chip by the 22nd fret near the upper horn that was overlooked because it has the final coating sprayed over it. There is also a scratch on the headstock at the G string tuner, it looks like someone overtightened the nut & scrated the headstock with a nut driver. Plus there is some black paint that ran into the binding on the top part of the headstock. Also there is a nick/scratch on the pickguard right below the neck pickup. The guitar plays well, and it looks good except for the imperfections I expalined earlier. I took pictures of what I complained in case someone at AMS would like to see them. I'm not sure of the return policy for guitars or if this could be returned for another guitar of the same kind I have. In the end the playability has met expectations but the quality control was far below expectations. 12. Gibson Sg Standard P-90 2016 T Electric Guitar, Heritage Cherry

In 2016 gibson built these p90 equipped, sg standards. not too many of these are available, supposedly only around 400 made at the nashville, tennessee plant. this one has no modifications, and is in very good condition. there is a blemish near the bridge on treble side, some dings on edge of head stock. see pictures. some light scratches on pickguard. frets are polished and free of divots. will come with a very nice skb hard case with tsa latches. priced to sell quickly, better hurry before i change my mind! gibson website has a detailed description of these guitars.

Overall: This is very nice guitar! Last year I ordered a 2019 SG standard that turned out have some QC issues. I sent it back and ended up getting a Gibson TV yellow special that's turned out to be the best guitar I've ever owned (go figure) but I still couldn't get the SG jones out of my system so I decided to order one of these tributes. I have always like the stripped down looks of the faded specials of the past but I never pulled the trigger on one. These new tributes look to be very similar to the old faded specials but I think that they've done some minor cosmetic upgrades to them. I like the lighter walnut stain on these tributes more than the darker worn brown specials. They also added a silk screen Gibby "thistle" to the head stock which really doesn't mean much to me but I guess it makes it look a little more like a standard. The satin or "vintage gloss" finish looks a little different than the old faded specials to me. It looks more like a semi gloss than the matte finish they applied to the faded specials. I may be in the minority but I like the looks of this SG more then the fancy but boring "cherry" or "ebony" of the standards. I like the visible texture of wood grain and the lighter shade of walnut stain they used on these tributes. The wood on mine was very well matched on the front. On the back you can tell that they used two, maybe three, pieces of mahogany for the body but from the front it looks like one solid piece of wood until you get right up on it. The fretboard on mine was dryish and needed a lemon oil treatment but it wasn't as bad as the fretboard on my Special. There were also no tool marks from dressing the neck binding (because there is none) like there was on my special. I feel as though this guitar would look better with nickel pickup covers and reflector knobs so I will probably add those as an upgrade. The "poker chip" was included in the gig bag but not installed on the guitar. I will probably leave it off as it makes the control area look cleaner and allows more of the beautiful wood grain to show through. The frets and dot makers were well done with no sharp ends. The fretboard played great and the frets appear to have been "plekked". Setup was great and ready to rip right out of the box. Tuning stability was good after I changed the strings and stretched them in good. Pots and controls seem sturdy and responsive. The satin maple neck felt nice as far as the texture but it was a little fat and wide for my liking. I was expecting it to be more like the neck profile on my Special which is fatter than a slim taper but it just fills the web of my hand, between my thumb and forefinger, and doesn't impede the "thumb over top" playing style that I use quite a bit. This SG has a flat area on the back of the neck and thicker shoulders and I fell like it favors more of a thumb behind the neck playing style that jazz players and shredders tend to prefer. It's not a thin "shredder" neck like an Ibanez but the flat spot on the back and thick shoulders made me have to shorten my strap and play the guitar higher up on my torso than I like in order to play some songs but I soon got used to it so it's not that big of a deal. The upper fret access was hindered IMO by the thickness of the shoulders and width of the neck which increases the farther up the neck you get but I use this guitar more for heavy rhythm playing so, again, it's not a big deal to me. If Gibson would improve the neck profile on this guitar I feel as though it would be a much more versatile guitar but then it would compete with higher end SG's so there ya go. The 490s in this guitar are very good pickups IMO. They are slightly hotter than PAF in output with prominent vocal like mids to my ears; great blues-rock p'ups for sure. They are noticeably lower in output than the P90s in my special which is okay because I use pedals to compensate for the differences in tone and output when switching between guitars during a set. They 490t in the bridge is probably my favorite. It can go from a jangly, chordy, rhythm to crunchy power chord riffs using the volume knob on the guitar and it retains clarity and definition when playing heavyish drop D rhythms with more gain. My LP Special is my go to guitar for playing "chordy stuff" (which is about 90% of the time) and soloing but the SG comes out when I need more chunk to my palm muted drop d riffs although the 490s are bright and articulate enough to do do the chordy stuff too. I use this guitar to do a drop D version of "Copperhead road". I play Steve's mandolin riff in the middle position then switch over to the bridge pickup after the "smell the whiskey burning" part and it sounds great never muddy or harsh. It also does the lower gain double drop D Neil Young rhythm stuff very well. The "soft case" that came with this guitar is the same as the ones that you get with the regular Standard. It's very nice as far as "soft cases" go I suppose but, IMHO, it's still not much better t
Absolutely love this guitar. Lighter than a Les Paul,with everything you need to rock! The only thing I don't like is the dot inlays. I am used to the trapezoids on my Les Paul. The tone is sharper and great for what I need it for. I've only had it 2 weeks, but already replaced a Paul part with the SG on my current project. It just got me the sound I was looking for. The body is comfortable and the neck is the slim taper which is perfect for my old fingers. I chose the brown because I think the red needs to be a lacquer finish and not the satin on the Tribute. Although I've only had it a short time, I can tell it has the soul of a beast. I feel more comfortable playing it than almost every other guitar I own. It just feels right. I love the maple neck, however, it does tend to want to neck-dive a little. Speaking of maple, I normally prefer a maple fret-board, but this one could change my mind. I'v been a Fender and Rick man for many years, but this guitar is well made, beautiful, and canplay just about any type of music. The low price does not mean low quality on this instrument. As a bass player, I just want to have a couple six string electrics that I can mess around with. I am not a lead, though I wouldn't mind becoming more proficient. This axe was good for me because it allowed me to get my hands on proper Gibson SG at a low price. No frills, but it doesn't need them. You buy a guitar for how it plays and how it sounds and this instrument does both really, really well. The 490 pickups are great. Tuning is important to me, so I'll probably modify the tuners on this guitar, but that's it. I am very having this axe in the arsenal.BT

Now that I'm in my 60's, jumping around on the stage with a 10lb Les Paul is no longer an option. I'd never even consider an SG, but it was so lightweigh I thought I'd give it a try. OMG why did I wait so long? This thing is a Rock 'n Roll time machine! Besides being incredibly lightweight and resonant, it sound amazing. And due to the double cut and neck joint construction, it's soo easy to play all the way to the 22nd fret. The wide slim taper neck is incredibly fast… and its light weight means no neck dive. I should have picked one of these up years ago!Steve
Yes, this guitar is 100% worth it. I wanted to wait a full year of owning the guitar to write this so that I'd be certain. There's too much good to write about this SG to be honest so to summarize I can't even call this guitar a rock and machine id call it a musical weapon. It sounds absolutely phenomenal which for me was the most important part. I'm used to strats which id been playing the last 18 or so in terms of playability, it def plays different but it plays really nicely. It has a lot more pop and feels stiffer. The finishing and everything else is top quality as well. Guitar is beautiful. Not only does the guitar sound awesome with literally any type of gain, but the cleans are extremely nice sounding as well. This guitar is the real deal, I waited a long time to pull the trigger on this thing and it was 1000% the right decision.Pd
Having good gear is important. I've always wanted a high end guitar inspired Angus young. The Gibson SG-61 stop tail is my flagship guitar. I also have Fender acoustic and a generic electric guitars, but Gibson is my PRECIOUS I've already knocked many things off the walls . Yeah, got some powerful amps too. Ok I felt the need to jump in here after reading some just off reviews about this guitar after purchasing mine. 1. Go to literally any guitar shop and play 5 of the same guitar and each one will play and sound slightly different with various levels of quality control which comes with any manufacturing environment. If you purchased one of these blind and did not play and examine it in store and got a lemon that's on you. Also the one dude that said these are repainted are simply false. Check out Trogly's show you Youtube where he does a full review of both Raven's. 2. Since it's release I'm lucky to have a few GC in my geographic area that I check out when I can. I played LP Studio's, Tribute's, SGs, and tone wise this one won all. These ceramic pickups are a step up from anything in the 1-2k price range in the Gibson line if you like to play overdriven and loud. Cleaned up they sound good but make no mistake this thing is built to roar. 3. STOP hating on Richlite. I simply don't get it. If you apply this same principle on materials guitar nerds are saying man that plane in 1930 flew beautiful so the materials used then are the ONLY materials we can use to build planes today. Pretty silly huh? Technology should advance to build better, more sustainable instruments. The fretboard feels great and the fret word is very good. But read I played many many over the past few months before I finally pulled the trigger. 4. One thing that gets an at mention but I think deserves some additional props is the fact that it's a mahogany body AND neck and it's a true solid body with no weight relief. It definitely adds extra ompf. 5. To wrap up, it's an awesome guitar and mine is well finished, set up, and assembled (including wiring). Do your homework, play a lot of rigs, and know what to look for in quality control and finish.Ryan
If I could give 0 stars, I would. I received this guitar new and it is, without a doubt, the worst $1100+ guitar available anywhere on the market. There is NO WAY this should have ever left the factory and ended up as my problem, but I'm not surprised considering Gibson's so called QC and "customer service". And don't expect them to care about your "cheap" guitar (quote from Gibson "customer service".) Just look at the pics- paint missing so you can see the bare wood underneath (not red underneath like the other reviewer said, just brown), scratches and scuffs and grey paint all over the neck and headstock, a bunch of the greying out over the dots was sanded off down to white, scuffs and what looks like grey paint all over the tuners, bridge pickup was a mess (the edge looked all chewed up and the tape was higher than the top edge of the pickup, it was also as low as it could possibly go), even the "baby pic" of the guitar that was included was a joke (washed out, borders on 2 sides, a dirty rag prominently displayed). I could go on, but you get the point. Gibson and Guitar Center should be ashamed of selling garbage like this, but of course, they are not.Eric
I have always enjoyed the tones of the 496R/500T pickup combination but they are hard to come by these days. My LP Traditional has a Duncan Distortion in the bridge but sounds nothing like this one. I already have an LP Special with the 490's in them and I'll grant that they are better for clean stuff, but these pickups have that gnarly, saturated gain tone that some us cherish. She plays like a dream as well. This guitar also comes with an excellent soft case (unlike the chintzy gig bag of my other Special) and a stop bar tail piece, rather than the wraparound bridge. I have had the Richlite fingerboard on higher-end Gibsons and have no complaints with that either. It looks a bit like ebony, but perhaps a bit warmer sounding. Oh, and please enough about the finish wearing quickly. ALL of the tributes do that. Some call them battle scars as it happens on high gloss nitro as well if played long enough. First they get shiny as your playing rubs on the top coat and then they can wear through. Would you rather have a polyester finish that feels like a plastic hard coat and muffles the tone? So… here is an American-made Gibson with a nice case for about a grand? Grab one while you can!Franco

One of my favorite sg models, the 2017 standard t! the classic 57 humbuckers are fantastic, and you can just rip up and down the neck. light as a feather under 7lbs. comes with original hard shell case. the previous (original) owner loved this guitar and played it, and it shows. there are pick scratches on the face of the guitar and a nick on the rear side. the neck binding also appears to have some of the lacquer chipping off in one spot. does not affect playability though. this plays like a dream and sounds like it too.

Regarding the Gibson SG 2017 HP: Pros Pickups sound great, Neck is lovely, and the guitar is very very light, the gig bag is very very nice Cons The Neck dive is ridiculously bad,so bad that I removed the g force and installed deluxe Schaller tuners and a Bigsby B5 bridge, the neck dive is still there but is manageable now, I wish they mentioned the neck dive in the reviews. The volume and tone Knobs are very cheap in quality and look terrible, I got rid of those too, also added a rhythm/treble ring,and changed the truss rod cover. The finish on the guitar is a bit cheap and nothing really great, I saw cheaper guitars with a much better finish. Prs and Ibanez do much much much better on a £500 guitar. Probably the only reason I kept it is because I love the SG shape. Is the guitar worth £999? Definitely Not in my opinionReviewed by Andertons Music Co.

The 490r/498t set gibby has on this is….meh. 490r may stay, but I IMMEDIATELY yanked that 490t because it's just not aggressive err enough for high gain maps, so if your a rocker, you'll need to plan on that expense iut of the gate. As is typical with Grubsons quality standards of late, mine came with a complete handprint in the neck stain(wine red/cherry). Typical. Not PLEK'd, so the gorilla that set it up, did so with an Orangutan in mind. Again,….sadly typical. After filing the fret razors off, a wetsand on the neck, a 498t….NOPE…Seymor Duncan SH-6b P'up install at the bridge, a $180 pro setup w/ MAJORtruss road adjustment, fretleveling, polish, I was in business! Great lil spankplank, and started off affordable, but those of us in the know understand the horrible HORRIBLE Gib/Grubson guitars that should never have left that factory, (they were THAT unplayable), and purchased by inexperienced parents for their kids, and young, inexperienced players at GCs, etc, etc, and here they are on Ebay, for sale. THIS 2017 Grubson SG Special is a good one!….NOW…keep that in mind when your bidding! Auction price PLUS $500 (+ another $200 for a nickel vibrola I'm now adding, so $700 total) in fix and mods is your final. Minus $150 if that 490t works foray! Good Luck.guitarasaweapon
This guitar is very nice. Bought it as a open box that had been returned. It did have tons of Pickgaurd scratches but it was just the plastic so no harm done and the strings were already slightly rusted but no biggie. The guitars intonation was almost spot on and the action was great. The only fret buzz was on the low e string and only when playing hard (which I do). I bought the guitar because of the mini humbuckers which are actually 495r and 495t pickups in case anyone is wondering. They are GREAT for raunchy low gain rock all the way up to super high gain metal with pinch harmonics effortlessly. Clean tones were a different story. Way too thin with no bass whatsoever. Even maxing out the bass on my amp didn't come close to the bass of my Les Paul or even my strats. I was hoping this guitar could bridge the gap between my strats and my Les Paul and I think it did somewhat but I just couldn't accept the thin clean tones. i think if these pickups were in a Les Paul they would sound perfect but an Sg is already bright sounding so it's just too weak when playing clean. But if you want to rock out or shred this is a great guitar. The neck is thick but very comfortable even for average hands. The finish is very nice. Just a step above a "worn" model. The only other problem I had with the guitar were that the Frets were very sharp. Overall an excellent price on a good American guitar that will hold its value. Just fell a little shortnashvillian
Brighter in sound than the standard Gibson SG, the SG special has all the basic elements of the best selling Gibson of all time. First, it is lightweight. My first Gibson was a Les Paul Custom, and after playing three sets of forty-five minutes with one of those strapped to your shoulder you'll regret it the next day. Back pain and shoulder soreness await. Not so with an SG… most are less than seven pounds… compare that to a Les Paul which frequently weighs 9-10 pounds or more. If full access to the upper frets is important to you, the SG has what you're looking for. You'll notice that the cutaway is past the highest fret, whereas most other guitars do not come close. Why there are frets beyond the cutaway on guitars makes no sense. You can't reach them… so why are they there? Baffling. One reviewer complained that his new SG needed a professional set-up before it was playable for him. ALL new guitars need to be set-up. Acoustic or electric. New guitars DO NOT come from the factory tweaked to your liking, because the factory doesn't know you and what you like. If you don't want to pay a professional to set-up your guitar, there are many Youtube videos that show you exactly how to do it. Its not rocket science, but it does take some knowledge and patience and a few special tools. Also… another thing that makes this "special" so special is that its an American made Gibson for less than a grand. A rare occurence.
