I have two SL drives, one for grit and the other set for lead, as well as an exotic AC booster before to add a bit of boost. I run the EP booster at the end for nice volume boost. I chose the SL Drive from a huge amount of drives on the market as I wanted something that fit on a small pedalboard, could provide a Marshall style sound at all gain levels as an alternative to amp gain, and which could work well with the BB MB pre-amp also by Xotic. This pedal really delivers. Although it takes time to set up and find the best sounds for personal preference, it provides a variety of useful tones across the spectra of volume, gain, and equalisation. The design is just so thoughtful and I like the possibility of running it at 18v, although at the moment 9v is better to my ears. I've had the SL drive for awhile now and try as I might I can't find anything that can kick it off my board. I've tried numerous other amp in a box pedals(Marshall and otherwise),overdrives and distortions but I keep coming back to this little guy. I guess I keep trying because I find it hard to believe that a pedal this small and this inexpensive(relatively) can't be outdone. Sounds great. Also surprising versatility with the HP/LP settings. One criticism is that its very loud. Slotting in after 2 boosts and an OD, then before a fuzz has played havoc with my gain structure as, with those other pedals operating within normal vol ranges, I've found the volume on the OCD needs to be most of the way down when using drive greater than 12-o-clock which is even more noticeable on the HP setting. Btw, that's into a highish headroom amp so if you were using the OCD to further drive an already breaking up amp into much more compression then probably not that great an issueReviewed by Andertons Music Co.
I needed something to stack along side of my TS that did not overpower the sound of the other pedal or sound too thick on its own. This pedal sounds fantastic with single coil pickups and pairs extremely well with other OD pedals. I like the fact it can run on either battery, 9V, or 18V AC connections, making this a great choice if you have limited ports on your power supply. On its own, it stands out very well when dialing up the drive settings and it sounds absolutely great coming through a properly dimed tube amplifier. It is no coincidence you see these pedals on the boards of many great professional players… This box just has excellent tone and all their products are handmade in the USA with plenty of care involved–making them a quality purchase. I am looking at collecting a couple of other earlier versions as some have tonal differences that work better with other set ups. Overall very satisfied with this purchase.built_for_speed
I've owned the Fulltone OCD for just over a week now and I can confidently say it's the best overdrive effects pedal I've ever had the pleasure of using. It has a sturdy build, it's versatile, it retains the original tone and colour of your guitar/amp combo and it's LOUD! I wanted a pedal that would fit compliment my '65 Twin Reverb Reissue amp and Telecaster, I love the tone of my setup but I really needed some bite in the shape of a good overdrive. After doing some research and seeing the name Fulltone OCD pop up again and again I started to get very curious about this pedal, the clincher was when I saw it on the pedal board of a guitarist on youtube who was showing off some of my favourite licks! I really like the Sparkle Drive. Tons of volume to drive any tube amp into submission. The clean/drive blend control really makes this pedal versatile. It can be an all out gain pedal, or a strong clean boost. The tone is a little dark, and has a little more "honk" than I normallly enjoy, but I have plenty of other places to compensate for that in my chain. Just a nice tight and focused sound. Very musical. Not too many extras here, but the clean/drive blend knob is a real treat. Seems pretty rugged to me, but the power adapter input has wiggled loose a couple times. Happens with lots of pedals, but then again, some never have this problem. For that, it gets an 8. Easily my favorite overdrive in this price range (and I likes me some overdrive pedals!!!)
That one line could sum up the entire review. It's a TS-808 clone with no surprises, except for the ability to blend in some clean tone via the Clean knob. I find keeping the blend below 25-30% is best, and I generally keep it at about 20%. Does it "sparkle"? Kinda. I like the tones I'm getting from it. Nice overdrive with some good string definition courtesy of the blend. As such, using the guitar volume knob, you can really clean it up.Another nice use of this pedal is as a clean boost. Turn up the clean knob and the volume knob and hit your other pedals or the front of your amp harder. Works great. I have it on my board with a Plexitube and a Full Drive 2 MOSFET, and it is a nice compliment to the others.
Nowadays you'll commonly hear about the Tubescreamer and the OCD being the ultimate OD boxes. As one person previously mentioned the Sparkle Drive has the same circuit as the TS808 (or keeley modded Tubescreamer) except for the simple fact that the SD can do more. The sparkle drive sounds better than the OCD (in LP mode) imo. The OCD's HP mode, however, is different and not comparable to the SD. The clean boost on the SD is surprisingly quite good! I used it all the time as a clean boost until I got an EP booster. Now I just use the drive. I don't really like to blend the clean with the drive, but to each his own. My one complaint is the knobs move way too easily. I wish they had a bit more friction. I haven't had any problems with the switch like some folks.Yffg
4. Ibanez Nu Tube Screamer Overdrive Pedal

The idea was born the moment ibanez saw korg's new vacuum tube device "nutube", which is the first innovation in 50 years in the vacuum tubes industry. the korg and ibanez engineers then met at winter namm 2016 for the collaboration between nutube and tubescreamer. one of the reasons why the tube screamer stands as an icon of overdrive pedals today is the mixture of the clean sounds and distortion tones which are made by clipper diodes. these are achieved in one 4558 op-amp section in the original circuit. however, in this new circuit the distortion isn't made by diodes but by the nutube, just like a full tube pre-amp, then mixed with clean signal passed through a discrete circuit. nutube and this circuit diagram create a feel of the natural tube compression, with a fat and mild distortion, and a wide dynamic range that can reflect sensitive picking nuance. a new feature never offered before is a mix knob which lets you control the balance of the clean and overdriven signals. another great feature is the nu tubescreamer that allows up to a 18v power supply giving players a wider headroom along with a louder overall sound. and for a more traditional sound you can still run it off a 9v power supply or battery.

Wasn't really looking for anything in particular when I came across the Ibanez NuTube Screamer guitar effect pedal. Was never particularly a fan of this item in its original form but was intrigued when I saw this newer model – especially at this price. Went onto the Pro Audio Star website found the item, bought and paid for it, and it arrived in short order exactly as advertised (I opted for a new one, not a used on). I've been using Tube Screamers since 1984 and own an original 808, TS9 and TS10 and a few of the reissues. This pedal does everything the vintage ones do, plus with the mix pot you can dial in the original signal with the overdriven sound. Seems to have a bit nicer touch/feel to it as compared to my vintage TS pedals. It still shelves the low end like the old ones, some guys like it, some don't. Also has the same mid bump. It's a cool pedal, it's not radically different than a regular Tube Screamer, but the mix pot is a nice feature. At least it is something new, and not just another Tube Screamer with a different paint job.Stink Fiddle
Great Tubescreamer variant, capable of a range of voices by using the Mix control. I was able to get the NTS sounding like some other TS circuit based overdrive pedals, although it does not have the versatility of say a Hermida Audio Zendrive with its ‘Voice’ control. Overall it is a very pleasing overdrive although a regular TS-808 does essentially the same job for cheaper. The NuTube adds a little bit of extra ‘fatness’ to the tone although not a huge difference compared to a regular TS. Cool unique colour scheme for a TS and Made in Japan if it matters. Recommend this pedal if you are a TS fan and don’t mind the price premium. If looking for versatility or value there are better options in my opinion.Rick K.

Sounds very close to Boss Bluse Driver; but not identical! a little more compressed and less low-mid range that gaves BD-2' warm end. very good overall. Bass and Treble controls are a plus to BD-2 but dialing a BD-2 sound out of it is tricky; you should always start from the lowest and gradually add Bass and Treble to reach the sound you want. It is true about the two other Digitechs that I own; Hot head and Grunge. If you start with everything at max then you may lose your guitar's original sound characters. The Gain works great and can clean up to only boost up to a rock-blues distortion; really amazing! this part is better than BD-2 that is not that good on the highest gain side. The distortion sound at higher gains is a bitt more compressed than Boss and to me it is nice thing and helps you keep one pedal instead of two on your board if you need some distortion on your parts. Of course, the enclosure is solid, durable and heavy in a good way. The mixer output maybe a plus for those who use it but to me, not so useful. Overall a really good versatile pedal in a reasonable price, especially recommended when can buy it at used price range (to me it is a universal rule, except for digital effects). Cheersmazda19851

The jf-35 sounds like a randall on 'roids. the gain is incredible, as you'll see in the youtube videos of the pedal being demo. the hardest part may just be deciding between this pedal and the other stomp boxes in the same arena. joyo has rock, metal, blues and every other tone nailed. the pocket metal, of course, is suited for metal and does fine in a hard rock setting as well. one really great feature is the pedal isn't noisy at volume (other than the signal that is supposed to be distorted). that's thanks to the quality components, such as the quarter inch input and output jacks, a clean dc power circuit (9v dc battery included) and other parts of quality including the capacitors, resistors, and of course, smooth pots (volume and tone knobs). speaking of which, the jf-35 has a unique mid-range control adjustment, as this frequency range is of more concern in heavy metal than the highs are. scoop or add grit, just by making a quick adjustment on the huge bright white knob. all told the jf-35 from joyo audio gets the job done and leaves you with spending cash to invest in strings, cables and all the other essential gear that it takes to make great music. the pocket metal distortion pedal will inspire you and afford you with that modern metal crunch!

I just got this pedal in the mail today, and I have been fooling around with it for a couple hours. I have owned many overdrives in the past, but I have never been shocked by one like this! I was hoping I wouldn't regret my purchase when I picked it up from the post office, and I certainly don't. Right now I have it paired with a Boss OS-2 running through a Marshall MG30DFX (yes, a solid state), playing a Les Paul with two humbuckers. This pedal sounds amazing! Using it for everything from a clean volume boost, to a boost with a little break up, to a lead rhythm, to a solo lead high-gain, it does everything! It says that Aces are prefered for humbuckers, while Eights for single coil. I would agree with this, but I would go further to say don't limit yourself to those. The Aces sounds amazing as a rhythm and a bluesy kind of break up, with less gain compared to the Eights. The Eights gives you a nice trebly higher-gain lead type overdrive, while still able to tone it down for some nice break up. My only complaint is that the Eights is so much quieter than the Aces that I can't just switch between the two without adjusting the volume. Oh well, this is still the best OD I've seen for this price! You won't be disappointed.duckslayer

Dried really quickly and was kinda flaky after a while. It burned my lips when I used it but I suppose it wasn't that bad. One of my favorite crunchy pedals. Best value, space saving, hugely flexible in attainable sounds within this micro sized box. Sounds great with any amp by adjusting the internal dip switches. Only downside is you need to remove bottom plate to get to them , BUT BIG PLUS, this small pedal takes 9 volt batteries! I dont know of any others this size that can. You can get overdrive/ distortion tones that rival other expensive pedals at twice the price. It is boutique and high fidelity sounding. I compare it to an Angry Charlie for grind character. It is also able to handle 9 to 18 volts DC. You cant go wrong , I keep it on my pedal board always.la_starr
This is a great little overdrive pedal. This is not a full blown distortion pedal and if you are unclear of the differences Google the differences and there are a bunch of articles on the subject. Having said that most of the sounds that come from this box are 60-70's blues, rock and classic overdrive sounds. You can reach and get some other types of tones but the sweet spot is that classic overdrive sound with any of the settings. Think Rolling Stones or Cream and you get the idea. The unit is so well made and easy to work with it is a "must have" in the players arsenal. No matter what you are playing this will make the guitar sound fantastic.drik_the_daring
