First Act Paul Westerberg Guitar For Sale (2024 Update)

I bought this guitar because I wanted a new toy and because of the price – I figured I didn't have much to lose. I have three other guitars, two of them Jackson, that I play frequently, and I always wanted a guitar of this style. The natural finish is attractive and unusual. I like that. The pickups are ok, but the electronics leave a lot to be desired. The fingerboard craftsmanship is lacking attention, at least on the one I received. There are unfinished areas and one of the inlays is missing a small section. I don't know what strings they send over to China to put on this thing, but they are complete garbage. Putting some new strings on improved things a lot. This also suffers from some fret buzz. The guitar comes setup pretty well. The intonation seems to be spot on and the truss rod is adjusted properly. Action is set surprisingly well, considering the price of the guitar. However, as I mentioned above, this results in some fret buzz. I'll work with that a bit later. The neck has the same feel and playability as my higher-end Jacksons, so that's a plus. Overall, I don't think you could go wrong with this in the low price range. I'd recommend inspecting the guitar closely upon receipt to double check quality control. I wouldn't recommend this as a first guitar, unless an experienced guitarist is available to inspect. It's also not a guitar that's easy to sit and play, which is something to consider. If you get a good one and it's setup properly, this is an excellent guitar for ripping out some metal riffs or just having fun. Just don't take it too seriously.Matt

I received my guitar about three days ago, and overall I am very happy with my purchase. The guitar looks awesome – I love the wood finish with gold hardware, and have received many compliments on the instrument's overall appearance. It is incredibly light, weighing in at just about 7 pounds, making it the lightest guitar I have ever owned. I love the feel of Jackson necks, and this guitar is no exception. It has a fast action that makes speedy riffs a breeze to play. Access to the higher portion of the fret board is incredible, thanks to the V body shape. This is my first Flying V guitar, and I will definitely need to get used to handling the unique body shape as I play. Now for a couple cons that made me drop my rating from 5 to 4 stars: this guitar is top heavy. I have never owned a top-heavy guitar before, and it is super inconvenient to play standing up. You have to put in a constant effort to keep the guitar level as you play. I personally like to play with my guitar at a 45-degree upwards angle, which is much more difficult to do on this guitar then on any of my other well-balanced instruments. While the natural wood body looks awesome, it feels as if it would be easy to damage. But as long as you're careful you shouldn't run into any issues. I ordered this guitar online, and was not happy with the experience Guitar Center delivered. It said that the instrument was in stock and ready to ship, but after three days I still hadn't received a shipping confirmation in my email. I reached out to customer support and found out that the guitar was actually not in stock and I would have to wait three additional weeks before my guitar would ship. That was a bummer. All in all I would recommend this guitar, and am happy I added it to my collection!Darin

My fiance purchased this guitar for me as a early Christmas gift around october 2019. After the usual string change adjustments and tuning it sounded great and played great. Only real issue is neck dive but with this body shape you expect it and can be corrected by moving the strap button placement to the back plate or near by depending on your choice i left it and rest the top horn inside my leg like you see dimebag with his ml and many others with the v shape and non traditional shapes like the warriors king Vs and so on. I personally love the Rhoads shape and the natural finish. Other than some minor changes and upgrades knobs Tusq Nut Locking tuners and a Seymour Duncan bridge pickup upgrade and a good setup this guitar is my daily player out of the 6 i own its become my favorite im looking to buy another honestlychuck thomas

I bought it for the neck thru construction and the finish which is quite stunning and very well done. The "Duncan Design" pick-ups are crappy, muddy and middy. Replaced them with "REAL" Seymour Duncan "Pearly Gates" and it sounds great now. The Floyd sits too low in the pocket (unlike my Charvel's do) poor engineering on Jackson's behalf. You can't get to the allen heads when you change strings because they sit so low in the pocket. You actually have to change one string at a time or insert the whammy bar and physically push it down to raise the rear of the Floyd so you can access the allen heads that hold the strings to the bridge. I have 17 guitars and this one is hands down the hardest guitar to change strings on I have ever owned. If Jackson would put better pick-ups in this model, and re-engineer how the Floyd Rose is mounted, it would be a lot more popular, but like most Jackson guitars priced under $1,500 they opt for the cheap electronics which in my opinion has been the case with every Jackson I have owned, you need to change the pick-ups and pots. This is a sweet guitar. The sustain is excellent, quite a difference from any bolt on neck guitar. I have a 1991 Ibanez 540SLTD, it is an excellent guitar. Been playing that for nearly 3 decades and its still my main guitar. This Jackson SL3X Soloist is just as playable. The neck is very comfortable from top to bottom. The Duncan designed pickups are very good too. Make no mistake, this is a shred guitar through and through. Can it do evreything else in between, like classic rock, jazz, country? Absolutely. You can dial in just about any sound needed. The pickups seem to have good output, but not insane, which i like. I also own a late model Ibanez RG350DX, with the infinity pickups. Those pickups, especially the bridge, are really loud, and overly distorted. I find that i have to roll the volume back to keep clarity. These pickups in the Jackson have good clarity. The neck and middle hot rails pickups are sweet. Artificial harmonics sing everywhere. The Floyd Rose special seems to stay in tune good as well. The fine tuners are a little gritty feeling, not anything wrong with em, but not silky smooth. They probably will get smoother as time and use allows them to break in. The hardware seems good. Solid tuning heads. Nice adjustment of knobs and pickup selector switch. The finish, neon orange, is flawless. Binding on neck and headstock is nicely done as well. The only issue i had with mine was fretbuzz on the first fret, 5th and 4th strings. Quick turn of the truss rod nut to add a little relief and reset the bridge height took care of that. This is a very fast neck to riff and shred with. Of course its great for slow playing, open chords etc… but, if Klingons are around, Warp Factor Five! Neck through Jackson Soloist, its a spaceship in disguise as an electric guitar. My Ibanez 540SLTD has an amazingly fast and thin neck, this Jackson is without a doubt on par with that, plus 2 more frets/ Jackson has better sustain and there is no sub 4 a thruneck.Freddy F

Hello Ola, I am thrilled with my new Boden Original NX-8. Combined with my Fusion NX-6, I have excellent, hand & wrist friendly, very high quality guitars. I am using a Mono Y-Cable with the NX-8 so that guitar oriented pedals and amp are used for "guitar", while bass i sent to bass-supportive pedals and amp. Really takes better advantage of the 8 string features. My only regret is that I am challenged in trying to add my Roland GK-3 pickup to either Strandberg for use with my GR-55. The very ergonomic, minimalist bodies leave little room for attaching the synth hex pickup. But, still trying since I have been a Roland guitar synth player for many years. strandberg asked me to review this product, and I replied that I was not pleased and that they probably did not want my review. Then… they asked me again. First, the positives. This ax is exactly what it says it is. It's compact, ergonomic, light and full of innovations. The fanned frets are just like everyone says.. you don't even notice. The same for the asymmetrical neck. The 3 way switch and controls give you a broad pallet of sounds, just like everyone says. The problem is that it felt, to me, that I was not playing a musical instrument. It didn't respond like an instrument. It felt like a piece of electronic equipment. The tones, while varied, never struck me as particularly musical. I suppose if you are depending on pedals to shape your sound, that's not a limitation. In that case the guitar is just a device for generating a signal. But that's not how I play. It didn't work for me. Remember… I TOLD strandberg all this, and they still asked for the review. My guess is that their algorithm simply registered that I hadn't submitted a review, so they asked me again. But that's it in a nutshell, isn't it? All machine. No soul.John S.

I've been eyeballing the Masvidalien Cosmo pretty much since it was released – I was hesitant to pull the trigger for two silly reasons: 1) I was stuck in this misguided notion that I needed an extended range guitar to play modern metal and 2) I was afraid that the high variability of the burled maple tops could somehow result in me receiving an ugly guitar. Like I said, silly. I started considering the artists I love who do mostly play 6 stringed guitars and decided that was a bad reason to hold back (look at Joe Haley of Psycroptic, or of course the man himself – Paul Masvidal of Cynic!) so after over a year I finally ordered my Cosmo. I was not disappointed! It's light as feather. Fretwork is immaculate. The EMG 57 sounds great, and that VMC control does really allow you to shape the sound (admittedly I need more time to play around with this). The burled maple top is exactly what I was hoping for. I don't see any tool marks, any hiccups in the paint, etc – in short, the guitar arrived flawless. I own one other guitar – a black Boden Original 8. Again, it's silly but I was concerned that I would have a hard time dropping down two strings. Like my fingers wouldn't know where to go. This wasn't the case at all. The slight 6-string multiscale feels just right and the EndurNeck is surprisingly effective (I figured it would play less of a role than on my 8 string since the 6 string neck is so much thinner, but I don't think that's the case at all). It probably sounds like I'm heaping too much praise on this instrument – that I'm being blindly positive. Maybe that's true. But it far exceeded my expectations, I haven't found a thing wrong with it, and I haven't been able to put it down since it arrived. Paul Masvidal and Ola Strandberg cooked up something truly awesome, and I feel very fortunate to be able to own a Cosmo. Highly recommended.Grim

I got mine a few weeks ago and just started learning how to play. The sound of the guitar does sound great as is and I was able to get it in tune easily. The guitar itself is amazing quality. The wood finish looks beautiful and near perfect, not one imperfection that I can see. The spruce top looks great too. The edges are finished in black accents to match the bridge pins giving it a nice touch. The neck is perfectly straight and the frets are smooth on the edges as I move my hand into different positions up and down the neck. The quality of wood appears to be nice as well. It seems to stay in tune reasonably well since I don't have any other guitar to compare it to. Recently it survived the 7.8 earthquake in Ecuador and is now my lucky guitar. I am very happy with the purchase and look forward to many years of use.sa_ecuador

I am rating this product two stars simply because of the accessories that comes with the guitar. 1st I would have liked a bit more instruction on how to use the tuner. It would have been helpful to know where to put it on the guitar. The book that comes with it does not offer any information about how to actually use the tuner. (I now know that it goes on the head of the guitar thanks to YouTube.) 2nd I'm not a fan of how the Guitar for Dummies is written (personal preference) and 3rd the guitar case is way cheap. The zipper broke after only 3 days. I would suggest that if you planned on carrying your guitar around, like for instance back and forth to lessons, that you order another carrying case because this one is unreliable. Now about the guitar itself, I really like it. I am new to playing the guitar and I wanted an inexpensive guitar to start off with just in case I lay it down to never pick it up again. I would only recommend this product to a friend for the guitar itself. Accessories that came with it totally sucks. Oh and by the way it also came with an allen wrench that I don't have the slightest clue what I'm supposed to do with it. Oh I forgot to mention that I broke a string on the first day but I believe that was due to the lack of instructions that came with the tuner. News flash you are selling this bundle based off the For Dummies series; so why assume that the people who are buying this bundle knows how to tune a guitar.Alekskya

The guitar is not setup. I am new with zero experience in guitars. When i went to misic class, my teacher said that it needed a setup as tunes are not coming up correctly. Cost to do the setup and correction is more than the price of the guitar. Unfortunately i joined music class after the return dates had passed, so unable to return now.Kartik

Was a bit dubious about Vintage to be honest. I was looking for a tele with maple neck with a 10 or 12” radius. And a satin finish body. Unless you go for the really expensive Fenders, all necks are 7.25 or 9.5. Richard put my mind at ease with the live chat which pops up whilst on the website. So I received the guitar not sure what to expect. I’ve own several Fender Strats and Teles so I can directly compare. The neck feels really good and was pleasantly surprised. One piece maple. I like the satin finish. The aging is silly but I like it. Within an hr I changed the pickguard screws as they looked to big. I then removed the control plate and bridge so I could remove the ridiculous sprayed aged finish. Took 20 minutes. The difference was instant. This was just my personal preference as I’ve aged a number of guitars. I’m not interested in some peoples snobbery with regard to relic guitars. A few visual tweaks and this Tele is as good as any Fender I’ve played. In fact I’d say that concidering Fenders huge range of guitars, they are totally limited to top end spec by never giving neck radius options on Mexican or Squiers. Ignoring the aging this guitar is good enough for beginners or any level. I like relic guitars personally so I’ll be adding my bit over time to make it look more realistic. It’s called character. I’ll be going for the strat next so Richard I hope you can give me a good deal. Lol. So my final thought. If you want a Fender you can’t beat these Vintage models for price. Especially with the set up. And if your really picky you can reshape the headstock which let’s face it, isn’t difficult. I took one star off because it took a little longer to get to me. Not an issue, I’m just impatient. My next guitar will be from Richards guitars.Andrew C.

To be honest I was a bit disappointed when I first saw this guitar. I've never wanted a falsely "relic'ed" guitar but the price Richard offered on this ex-demo item was irresistible. I realise now that it was just the relic look that put me off. As soon as I played this instrument I feel in love with it. The great set up is a big part of it but the tones and the sustain are phenomenal. This is my first Telecaster, my third Vintage brand guitar and my second from Richards Guitars. The very first sound I had it of this was the neck pickup with (I didn't realise at first) the tone control halfway down. Fantastic jazz tone! I won't go on, suffice it to say that this Telecaster-style guitar has all the tonal versatility and no-nonsense playability of a very good Telecaster. This is a wonderful guitar — my new favorite in my collection. Without a headstock the balance is great, it fits very well when seated. Great low action and I didn't really have to adjust to play on the 'strange' frets. Pick ups deliver good tonal range. The key thing here is the temperament and though my ears may take some getting used to a guitar that is 'in tune', so far it's been a terrific experience. I am a 7 year veteran in playing and collecting guitars. My interest in Duesenbergs piqued when I saw and heard Chris Cornell playing one. When I ordered this baby I couldn't wait to receive it, unbox it, and start rocking. I have an arsenal of 20+ guitars which includes Les Paul's, limited edition Teles and Starts and Gretsch's. Hands down the BEST guitar in my collection has arrived!! This baby does it all tone wise. Shimmering cleans for jazz and blues and smooth robust rock and roll grit. Well made from headstock to vibrato. It's basically a high end Mercedes but in guitar form. Buttery playability and an absolute joy to play. No way I'm ever parting with this guitar and feel bad for some guitars in my collection that will now be sold away since this Starplayer does it all. It's the little things that matter. You can sit on a mountain, but not on a thumbtack. And, Dusenberg clearly 'gets this' because they've paid attention to the smallest details with this rock-solid (& unique) instrument! Every edge, wire, binding, screw, and piece of hardware on this guitar feels like it was made as a conscious decision as part of a larger artistic endeavor…and it's a success. Here's a guitar that truly stands apart. This Starplayer TV Fullerton radiates with its own distinct personality! All of the electronics & parts are designed and manufactured by and FOR Dusenberg guitars. This beauty has a rich fat sound. Somehow, the bridge-humbucker is simultaneously SMOOTH and crunchy! And the neck pickup is a P-90 style single-coil pickup, that feels wide open whether it's growling or jazzing!! The fingering is perfect and fluid, and the frets/fretboard are factory plekked. It's Dusenberg designed vibrato is super stable when it comes to tuning, too. (Even the darn case is a testament to handmade quality) Overall, I think what really matters here, is that there's a TRUE balance with this guitar…the way it feels in your hand, and the way it sounds to your ear. Sound: The sound of this guitar, with the JB bridge pup is totally awesome for hard rock and metal. Also, the SD cool rails in the middle and neck positions sound great. The neck pickup in particular really sings. The pickup compliment really makes this guitar outstanding. Features: Has a nice little wrench holder on the back of the headstock. Just keep a penny in your pocket in case you have to remove the wrenches from the holder as it is set up to tighten and loosen with a coin or a flat head screw driver. Ease of Use: There wasn’t really a learning curve for this guitar. Every feature on this guitar is quite intuitive. Quality: Very well made guitar. The Floyd Rose is great. Keeps it in tune better than any other system out there. This guitar comes with a FRT 1000 Floyd Rose trem. I think it’s fit and finish rivals that of the OFR. Anyway, it handles all the abuse I dish out on it, and stays perfectly in tune. Value: This guitar delivers everything that one would expect from a one thousand plus dollar guitar, and then some. Manufacturer Support: See my previous comments The Wow Factor: The finishes offered on this guitar are spectacular. I get so many compliments on the looks of my guitar. Overall: Wow, when I got my Kramer SM-1 the thing seemed too good to be true. The fit and finish was great. The nut was at the right height. The bridge height and the action was just right. I could pull up a mile. Beautiful color (orange). Frets were all level, and no pokey fret ends.As far as being too good to be true, well it did have a stupid flaw. Someone at the factory forgot to put a ground wire to the trem claw. I had to take it to the warranty repairman. Took the repairman 10 minutes to fix it. Four inches of wire and two blobs of solder was all that was needed. Warranty job, so fixed for free. Almost.After 6 months of ownership of this guitar, the warranty guy gave me a call to tell me that Gibson never paid him, and that he was going to submit the claim one more time, and that I was to pay him if Gibson didn’t. When I first brought the guitar to him for the repair, he wanted 50 bucks. I said hold on there man, this is a warranty job. He decided to do the job right then and there, even though he couldn’t get authorization that day.Anyway, I wound up having to call Gibson and told them what happened. They were apalled. Gibson customer service really isn’t that great. I’m still waiting on parts for another guitar from the for the last 6 months. Gibson did straighten the warranty guy out though, and they paid the repairman. Apparently the repairman didn’t submit the claim properly.Well aside from that one issue, the guitar is perfect. The blade pups for the neck and middle sound awesome and so is the HB bridge pickup. SD JB I’m told. This guitar, aside from my ground wire issue, was as perfect as perfect can get. If you are looking for a shred guitar, sheik one of these out. The placement of the neck in relation to the body just feels right, unlike my Jackson soloist, which feels foreign.Scott

Overall: after a thorough check of the guitar:the temolo system is of very poor quality.the knife edges of the tremolo system were badly bruised, as were the posts. the drive-in sleeves were very rusty and not hammered in properly.the mechanics were not properly attached and reils showed an idle travel of half a turnthe frets had strong scratches all over the fingerboardthe electrical system was laid in a mess, 4 cables came loose during the preliminary inspection, the 5-way switch had a loose contactall of the excavated shafts were not sanded, the electrical compartment was not shieldedwhy did i keep the guitar? because I am able to fix everything. and if i pull off the pu, it stays under 650 dollars for a lacquered body with a neck, that's oki installed a schaller lockmeister tremolo, schaller mechanics, a completely new electrical system, the frets dressed and polished, the shafts ground, the electrical compartment insulated, the misalignment on the nut fixed, a string retainer installed, new buttons installed.now i have a guitar that keeps the mood, sounds great and is the way it should be. I invested around $ 550 for this. so in total the guitar cost 1,600 dollars. I would have liked to pay directly if the manufacturer had offered it.I can't give you a recommendation out of the box because the guitar is not playable like this. maybe i get a lemon, but ther is no quality controll at all.Dirk

Overall: Had one of the Silvertones in the &70'. This is a great reproduction with modern refinements. Good setup right out of the box. Very fun to play. Wish they would produce the" amp in the case" like my first one had. The web site for service & registration has much to be desired. Otherwise a great find.Mike

Overall: Saw this little gem and had to have it! Ordered on a Thursday afternoon and was delivered Saturday morning- aside during a snowstorm! Was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this guitar, especially for the price. I remember these guitars from when I was young, and I always thought they were cool looking in a funky way. Guitar plays nicely and sounds good. Had to tweak action and intonation a little after changing to my preferred strings. All in all, a great little guitar for a great price!Mike

This guitar stays in tune and is light. Even the hard shell case is light. The frets are the best I have ever played on, no buzz and hard. I look at the frets with my magnifying glasses all the time, I'm amazed to see no marks or wear. The fret ends are smooth with no sharp ends. The string spread is the only thing I am having to get used to…sometimes I push the low E off the fret board. I did have to spray the toggle switch with contact cleaner, after only a month, but it seems every guitar I ever owned has needed this. I really like the pickups and pots. The pots have a nice feel and the taper is super. The aged look is fun to look at and feel. The red paint has a rich deep antique quality that makes me wanna pick it up. The hardware is top of the line…if I didn't have to spray the toggle switch I would have never changed the strings. I tuned the guitar when I opened the case the first time…after that the high E sting never went out of tune for 2 months! I bought this guitar because I'm getting old and wanted something that was great. This was a large purchase for me. I waited 3 months to review. I have been playing for 15 years and teaching guitar for over a year, and this book really sticks out as my favorite. Why? It has a fun selection of music with more rock and pop type of music than most, plus most of your older beginner classics. Most of the other books teach old folk music, etc. which always seemed lame to me. Plus, it has a fun and cheerful writing style and good illustrations. It has a logical progression from note reading melodies, and as the dexterity increase over time, it starts adding chords, plus the rock power chords which most leave out. I recommend getting the one with the CD to help figure out a few of the tricky tunes included, but most are really logical and easy to figure out. Most of all, find a local guitar teacher to help you put it all together and to keep you from developing bad habits, and to have a routine to help you get through that first year. Also, have an experienced musician help you pick out a decent guitar; there is so much awful sounding junk out there these days that will make a real musician want to quit, but do the best you can if that is all you have, and start saving up. Play on the tips of your fingers and keep the thumb behind the neck to develop good playing techniques that will be important later on as you progress. Get thebook; it's as good as they come!zzz333

A lot of beginner's start with the chords or go for tabs. I needed to know how to read the notes. This books teaches a little lead but it mostly teaches how to read notes and how strings interact with them. Recommended for analytical minds.dracosmith05

I look at guitars in a completely different way now. This book is about so much more than guitars: it traverses the geo-political and climate change; the move from old, skill-based construction methods to modern, automated processes and the tension that exists between them. Guitar making, it seems, will always have a foot in both camps, to some degree. So many of the fascinating people in the book are conflicted about what they do. Guitars have specific needs, mostly old-growth and/or rare timbers. The idea that a tree that was a seedling before Christopher Columbus was born is to be felled to provide soundboards for thousands of guitars is hard to stomach, no matter how important music is to you. Chris Gibson and Andrew Warren have done a thorough job on researching this book. I'm envious of the places they've been, and the trees that they've see. You don't have to be a guitarist to find this book fascinating. That said, I'm a drummer, so I just looked at the pictures and intuited the above.AJ

Although there are some strong tunes on this disc, there are also alot of songs that are pretty weak. In my opinion it doesn't contain Westerbergs best solo stuff. His solo CD's: 14 songs & Suicaine Gratification are pretty solid.things*4u

It's not a bad little starter for the young ones with very simple instructions but my main concern was the price. It is overpriced for what it is. There are far better tutorials than this out there for what you pay.littlebelter

The soft covered publication is crammed with useful information on all aspects of the guitar. There are tributes to a number of famous guitar players clearly establishing the guitar as a significant entertainment instrument. A great deal of emphasis has been placed on theoretical applications pertaining to guitar and the book contains easy to follow instructions on how to transfer the theory to practice. Much of the detail in the book is for the intermediate musician who ideally needs to be able to read music to fully benefit from the books elaborate treatment of guitar music theory. This book could be considered the 'Bible' for guitar players, and is very useful for ukulele players as well.2013auroebu
