Yes they cost about twice as much as a packet of standard Ernie Balls or D'addarios or whatever but when you compare the price to that of bass strings or violin strings we guitarists don't have it that bad. The difference between Cobalts and standard Slinkys is for me about stability. They have a different timbre and are slightly 'louder' than normal strings but if you do a lot of bending in your playing I recommend you check Cobalts out because I feel they stay in tune better. I don't have trem guitars but if I did I feel these strings would cope better with radical whammy antics than ordinary strings. At the end of the day it's a personal thing but I knew that when I bought and fitted my first set and I swear by Cobalts now. These Strings are an improvement over the already awesome Cobalt strings. I've been playing guitar for 14 years, and haven't ever found a string that gave me the tone that these give me. They feel different than Nickel strings, but there's something addicting about these. Acoustically they even sound louder. Really impressed, and will probably play these and the Cobalt strings on all of my main axes.
Overall: I put these on my Strat 4 hours ago and without hesitation I can say that these are 5 star strings. There is definitely more sustain and volume and I really like the feel. Strange “grey” winding actually matches my brushed nickel hardware. Quite an inexpensive way to make my amazing Jeff Beck Strat even better. Paid over 10 put all strings on not overwound and then wiped finger marks from guitar and b string 0.13 gauge just broke for no reason??. So dissatisfied and disappointed had to fit a cheaper 0.11 gauge which are for nines not the tens I purchased. Wont buy again just wasted 10 plus now have ten strings mixed with a nine b string. These strings have suited me very well. The clarity that i got melded so well with the active emg pickups on my schecter hellraiser c-7. The clarity from these strings forced me to play more clean. My leads, especially above 12th fret, have become much more distinguishable. Combined with the active pickups, its almost like each note is now easier to hear as you play a fast lead run. In most cases, I would never buy Ernie Ball. I've tried pretty much every brand and Ernie Ball overall wasn't even something I'd consider back in the day. However, a couple years ago I was in a pinch and bought the Cobalts for my 7 string guitar. Ever since I haven't purchased another kind of string. These are the best in my opinion. My absolute favorite. I string all my guitars with Cobalts. Their only downside was that they felt really rough on my fingers when I started playing on them. I don't notice that anymore though. I was also getting back into playing so that could have been why. Maybe I've been lucky. In my experience Ernie Ball strings can break as soon as you take them out of their little paper sheath. In the case of the Cobalt strings, I have never had to change a Cobalt string due to it breaking. I've never had a Cobalt string break on me. In some cases a year has passed and the worst that's happened is the strings won't hold their tune as well anymore. Now, I'm not suggesting you wait a year. Typically, I change strings on my guitars every 3-6 months.And I'm not saying these won;t break. I'm fully expecting a string to break on me when I start playing today because I'm posting this. All those videos you've seen with Slash and Petrucci are true. I play mostly metalcore and melodic death metal with EMGs and lots of high gain, but I can attest to the clarity. Even at high gain tones, when you play a chord you can hear each strings' voice clearly, no muddiness. Pick attack is more noticeable, your picking angle and gauge makes a huge difference in your sound than with other strings. Overall, both the bass (wound) and treble strings have more high end. High end that cuts even through the bass overtone of your C notes. Super easy to coax out crystal clear pinch harmonics. If you drop tune, open palm-mutes on the 6th and 5th strings have an orgasmic resonance, imo. Not kidding, these strings are awesome. This is all based on the 12-56 strings, tuned to Drop B, Drop C, and C standard with EMGs 60 and 81.
Cobalt strings provide the perfect combination of clarity and weight. Nickel strings lack clarity but have the weight to make for a thick and heavy tone. Steel strings have clarity but lack the weight for a solid low end. Cobalt strings bring out the best of both worlds.TheMetalFarmer

I only recently tried these cobalts and will probably never go back to the standard nickel strings. The big difference you notice right away is the feel of the strings when pressed and played, almost giving the feel of having a scalloped neck. The strings have a sort of elasticity to them, making for easy bending. Just a great feel. The next difference you'll notice is the higher output they give, while in my case actually making each note more distinct and clear at higher gains. They produce a higher output and they're brightness lasts noticeably longer than traditional strings. Beautiful tone, very similar to nickels in most respects but with a little low-mid boost and tightened high end. The harmonics really pop on these and the tone sits well in a band setting. You get a nice foundation without getting muddy and you cut through with articulation without being obnoxious. They're nice and smooth like nickel round wounds and have a nice even feel. I've been through a few sets and one problem I've had with them is that the high strings sometimes break, but I have to say it's probably due to my technique (over bending and popping heavily)and how light this particular guage is. I'll be getting a heavier set of the hybrids (45 65 85 105). This has helped when I had this problem in the past. If your a fan of nickel round wounds give them a try.Jutsushine

I got this set to give it a try on Drop C tuning. They are smooth like they say, they are loud like they say, and yes it has the clarity they claim. I tend to EQ my bass preamp a bit more treblely (bass 40% / treble 60%) because I like the pick alike attack it gives when playing finger style. About feel, they feel like nickel plated strings, but with sharp (or sharper) attack of stainless steel. You can dial all styles of genres with this strings, but when using a pick and some distortion, I can achieve the Justin Chancellor tone, and Geddy Lee's tone when using fingerstyle.
Played Rotosound BS66 for 20 years and wanted to switch to a more heavy set of strings. After some investigation I figured to try the Cobalt series of Ernie Ball. They are a bit more rough on the fingers but it's close to Rotosound. On the other hand they are not as bright as the Rotosound but they last longer soundwise. The sustain is indeed better, as mentioned in the reviews i've read about these strings. Output should be higher too but that's hardly noticable. So, in the end these are good strings for a nice price with a big plus that they have a longer lasting good sound compared with Rotosound.

I had tried a lot of different strings from several makers, both coated and not. I had tried other Ernie Ball strings and they were good, but I was still searching. I saw the Cobalts at my local music store and gave them a try on my Ibanez. They broke in quick and the little nuances I had searched for were right there. There are a few "good" brands of electric guitar strings, and I have always chosen Ernie Ball as my goto set. They cost less, and last just as long as anything else that I have tried so that right there is enough for me. The new Cobalt, and Paradigm series strings are even better in my opinion, and it is the Paradigm that I use on my personal guitars now but for every guitar that I sell (several every month) it is always Cobalt series strings. I live on the Florida coast so anything made of metal is short lived especially guitar strings but the Cobalts do the trick, and last a couple of months for me.zombie415.2009
These strings need no credability having already been used and endorsed by the likes of Eric Clapton and Steve Vai and many more guitar giants. I only recently tried these cobalts and will probably never go back to the standard nickel strings. The big difference you notice right away is the feel of the strings when pressed and played, almost giving the feel of having a scalloped neck. The strings have a sort of elasticity to them, making for easy bending. Just a great feel. The next difference you'll notice is the higher output they give, while in my case actually making each note more distinct and clear at higher gains. Overall: Use these exclusively on my 7 string. Perfect gauge sizing for down tuning; I love tuning to GDGCFAD. As far as "output" I can't really discern any advantage over other strings, but these of course have that great bouncy Ernie ball sound to them. I feel like they last a tad longer than plain Ernie balls but it could be a placebo effect. The gauge is perfect for what I do, anything else with these is just a plus. My main motivator to choosing strings are the available gauges, and these are a perfect fit. If you're looking in this range, you won't be disappointed.Brad
