Reviews:
I've been performing and recording electric bass for 50 years and this bass is my 1st 5 string bass. But it is my 2nd MM stingray, my other being a 4 string from the 80's that sounds great, plays great, but is very heavy. Up until recently I've avoided extended range basses as a traditional style "fender 4 bassist" but I've also acknowledged the advantage to having a low B string when working w/ keyboardists so I finally took the plunge, and am I glad I did. It's taken me the better part of a month of not playing anything else to begin to get used to this new string configuration but it's happening and I'm enjoying the process. So, about the bass; I pulled the trigger when I saw the advertised weight of 8.2 pounds, for a 5 string?!?!?! When I weighed it at home on my hanging digital scale it was 8.16. WOW. The new stingray special really is something special, 1) it's light 2) it's incredibly stable, I tune it about 1x a week and I practice every day, 3) the NECK! the new gunstock oil/wax finish is the best feeling neck I've ever played, the radius is perfect for it, and the maple board is nothing less than a racetrack. I've got one other bass who's neck I appreciate this much , a 1965 pre-cbs L series precision. 5) all of the aluminum hardware works perfectly and is gorgeous 6) it arrived w/ perfect fretwork and a perfectly cut nut. I ply w/ low action and this bass holds it; very minimal relief and 5/64" clearance at 17th fret on the B string. This stingray special is tight!
I recently purchased this bass (smoked chrome single H) and I couldn't be happier. The bass looks better in person than online! Besides the looks, the bass weight is balanced (no neck dive) and light. This is my third Musicman purchase and I will say the setup wasn't great with any of them. I don't mind that since I will change out the strings and adjust them to my own liking anyways. I added EB cobalt flats to mine and love the tone I'm getting from it. Be warned! This bass punches through the mix! I played it recently at my church and I was asked to dial back the volume because it was to much for the mix. I don't mind that because it's better than not having enough power and it was a simple fix! The neck feels amazing, better than the satin finish on my fender P and J basses. I had a choice between this bass and a Fender Elite precision and the difference was in the feel and weight. They both sounded great but the low weight and feel of the neck did it for me. You won't get that from a picture/description online! If you're on the fence about getting one try it out at your local GC like I did. I have no regrets with this bass, it's craftsmanship at its finest.Adam
I have always avoided a Music Man because of the price tag. I decided to trade in two of my top line Schecter basses for this and I DON'T regret my decision. This Stingray has perfect balance, perfect tone, and perfect set up right out of the box. My bandmates love the deep growl of the low end and the clear highs on the upper end. The HH set up allows me to get all the various tones I need for my Alternative music band. I get the punch I need for my RHCP, Green Day, Blink 182 songs along with my deep tones needed for my Foo Fighters, Weezer, Muse, Killers, Toadies and all my other songs. My Schecter basses were great but were not this versatile. I will never go back to middle of the road basses now that I have been stung by the Stingray!Bean

Reviews:
This guitar came ready to play right out of the box. If it weren't for the 3 day trip from Indianapolis to Ohio, It would of probably been in tune out of the box. The instrument was packaged well. While un-wrapping the case from the 2 boxes it was packaged in I had no doubts that the instrument would be okay. The guitar itself is a beautiful piece of art and beautifully set up. Clean and Neat. The guitar plays like butter and is easy to play. I am a music student going to school for music performance in jazz studies and this guitar matches all the requirements I had for a guitar. I have other instruments besides this one, but I wanted a work horse guitar that I would not be afraid to carry on my back everyday. NO FRET BUZZ on any strings! I have been to the Galloup school of guitar repair and building for the journey man program and I felt no need to try and tweek this guitar in any way, other than the pick up height on the neck pick up. That pick up was set oddly low. I would like to commend the person and peoples at music man for a nicely done job on getting their instruments ready to go out of the shop and Musicians Friend for the great customer service and fa-nominal job on packaging and shipping. Thumbs up!Joey Slu
My guitar arrived ready to play. I almost didn’t even have to tune it. workmanship was superb no fret sprout, rough edges, string buzz etc. The pickups are great as is and you can dial up any sound you want easily. Neck is smooth as silk no issues. The guitar exceeded all of my expectations. it’s hard to put down once you begin to play it. Hard shell case is great very solid and beautiful inside with lots of room for stuff! I own over 138 guitars this is one of the absolute best of my high end models. Once you begin to play it you will find it hard to put downmwpv11
Quality and attention to detail is the name of the game with Music Man. Acoustically the guitar is resonant and had a clear tone. Plugged in the low output pickups let the tone shine. It has body you’d expect from humbuckers but with a clarity that was very surprising. Fret work is flawless and the natural feeling neck is fast and smooth. Plus the flame on the neck and fretboard is incredible. It has more flame and depth than many big brand body tops I’ve seen. I’d say the neck is on the smaller side of medium but super comfortable. Overall the guitar is simply outstanding.Mark

Overall: Just bought the white version of this with a rosewood board .It’s true what I’ve read that this is probably the best production bass made! There is not a sound that you can’t get from this bass! From Jaco staccato to monstrous metal from hell! The case itself is a work of art.Action is great and super light. If you get the itch don’t hesitate it’s well worth it.I’ve been playing for 25 years and had MTDs ,Fender MIAs, G &Ls,you name it and this thing smokes them all.And of course the ZZ payment planMade it possible.BTW the low B string is as solid as I’ve ever heard as well. You won’t be sorry if you buy this beauty, truly a work of art.Raul

Reviews:
Overall: Extremely well made, great quality control and a great attention to detail. Hipshot tuners and bridge, the fit and finish was top notch and it balances like a dream. It’s very versatile sonically too. I am able to get a great variety of sounds out of it even without a preamp. Pickups sound really good and even though it’s a passive bass, the output is still really good. Out of the box setup was pretty good, I made a few tweaks to the action but the intonation was spot on and the truss Rod was adjusted properly. I highly recommend this bass, I am very pleased with it and it has become my number 1 for playing out and for practicing.Kris
I'm glad I ordered this PRS bass from Pro Audio Star. I stumbled onto it while browsing eBay and asked for more pictures. This was supposed to be an "Open Box" purchase that I was very hesitant about. After receiving the bass I immediately took it to my music room and plugged it up. I surely didn't expect the volume I was getting from the passive pickup system or the gig bag I wasn't expecting to receive. The thru body neck and thru body string system provides plenty of sustain and phenomenal clarity and resolution. The clarity of each note was more than I could have asked for. I rank this bass right up there with some of my custom builds like Mike Lull and Status. Im not kidding. You really have to try this bass. The two massive Humbuckers deliver killer tones and plenty of volume for giging. I run all my basses through a Boss ME 50B pedalboard and then into a SansAmp for extra flexibility. The combination has been my goto setup for live performances and allows me to dial in whatever tone I want while on the fly. I would highly recommend this bass for any level of proficiency. The price was definitely a factor in the purchase.BradC
There is something about this bass that just works for me, its exceptionally playable with great feel and balance. Normally it takes me a long time to find a tone I like on a bass, but this PRS Kestrel just settled into a beautiful responsive sound within a few minutes, backed if the volume a touch and found the sweet spot between the pick ups and honestly havent changed it since finally found the bass for me!!!!bobbluemac

Reviews:
The bass is great. It feels amazing and plays just like a normal stingray special.Clinton
This bass looks amazing in person! I used it mostly for practicing and jamming out. It sounds okay without the distortion on, basically just like a new stingray special without a mid knob. I really miss the mid knob to be honest. The distortion circuit is only usable in small amounts and when you turn it up even half way its just too much fuzz/loud noise. If you are collecting musicmans, go for it. If you want a new stingray special, avoid buying a darkray in my honest opinion. The color is cool but the electronics are not practical in a band setting and the missing mid knob is a bit of a let down.Clinton

It's got the Musicman quality I expected, but with the six strings and bigger fretboard is the added weight.Hummerguy
I have several 6 string basses that I have been playing over the years. I've wanted a Bongo 6 since they came out. Well, I saved my money and purchased it 3 days ago from Music 123. 2 day delivery was more than acceptable! After setting the neck and intonation this thing plays above anything I have played and has exceptional sound / sustain. If you are looking to make a change from another 6 or want a first, this is the way to go. No regrets at all!Hooter

I always loved the Stingray body style and sound, but the neck was just too thick and wide for me. I own a number of Music Man Sterlings because they have the most comfortable neck on any bass I've ever played/owned (which is virtually every brand). However, while I love the Sterlings, there was something about the Stingray's classic body shape and use of Alnico magnets in the pickups (Sterlings use Ceramic which are "hotter" and more modern sounding) that I always wanted to have. When Music Man came out with a Stingray with the Sterling neck (i.e., this SLO Special), they combined the best of both worlds. Such a smart move by the company to recognize the desirability of this configuration. I own the SLO Special HS version. The classic Music Man look and sound with a neck that never is a struggle to play. Also, unlike some other brands that put a heavy gloss on the back of the neck (which seems nice at first but turns out to cause terrible "thumb drag"), the Stingray has the awesome wax/oil combination which give Music Man necks that characteristic unfinished wood feel that makes playing all night long effortless and comfortable. Another nice thing about the Stingray compared to the Sterling is that it has more space between the neck pickup and fretboard (and one less fret) so that slapping/popping is easier. This is really the ideal bass and it is highly recommended. It is a bit heavy like all Stingrays, but the comfort you'll experience with the Sterling neck and a nice place to rest your thumb on the dual pickups more than makes up for it.Where's My Mule?
wow,a stingray with a sterling neck sweet,my is all phantom black lol, single pickup, mine saids custom made, maybe somebody order this bass, this one for some reasons the treble just right the bass is thunder siriously,i bought at guitar center, the neck i think is graphite with rosewood fret top, amazing bass i will not sell this one,i must it had about 100 basses, stingrays fender jazz this is the one,i wonder if they made anymore like this one?

Reviews:
The build quality, fit and finish are excellent. The fingerboard and fret work are 1st class. There are no blemishes in the paint that I can find. The color looks the same as it does in the pictures. The instrument is quite light weight for a 5 string bass and very well balanced. It is not neck heavy and the neck stays right where you put it. The neck is a bit chunky but it works well for me. Tuning is easier and more accurate than most other basses I have owned. Included is a really nice case and tools. The instrument plays very well, now that it is set up. It was received pretty much unplayable. I don't expect instruments to come set up but this one was so far out that I doubt there ever was a final inspection. At this price point I am expecting a lot more from the manufacturer. The neck was extremely bowed but it straightened out well. And afterwards the string height was still way too high. After proper height adjustment, the G string saddle has only one screw turn left before it bottoms out on the bridge plate. Sadly a neck shim may be required in the future. The intonation on each string was out as much as 8 screw turns. This instrument is supposed to be a BFR? Who looked at it before it left the factory? If you know what a StingRay sounds like then you know what this bass sounds like: bright, punchy, authoritative. I'm impressed with the tonal variations available from the pickup switch, especially considering there is only one pick up. I'm not going to miss the the neck pickup at all. The treble, mid, and bass knobs give expansive control over the tone; leaving nothing to want. I'm not able to comment on battery life yet. I had considered returning this bass but after playing it for a couple of hours I've decided a really like it. This could have been a 5 star review. I took a star off for Ernie Ball's lack of attention to detail on an expensive bass; one that is supposed to a be something very special.Fretless J
