Electric Guitar Pedals Guide For Sale (2024 Update)

First of all let me say I also have the G1ON and bought the G1X Four for the enhanced features and so I'd have one with the expression pedal. I sold all my tube amps when I was laid off, retired and moved to Mexico. My reference point is tweed and blackface era tube amps. I gotta say, once you learn how to dial in the tones you want, these little plastic boxes do a pretty decent job of amp and effects modeling. Like the G1ON, the G1X 4 does a good job of imitating the touch and volume control dynamics of a cranked tube amp at any volume. I really like the Deluxe Reverb, AC30 and DC30 simulations. The G1ON has more vintage style amp types to choose from, and in that regard it is more useful to e. Two kinds of spring reverb, one eats up a lot of memory but really sounds lush like an external unit along with the other types (room, plate, hall, church, etc.). Tremolo is built into the Fender models that have tremolo along with a couple of very configurable trems and rotating speaker effects. The G1 4 does NOT have the Z Organ effect the G1ON does, boo hoo. Beyond that, there are tons of effects to play with and they all sound good to my ears. I currently have 3 small amp setups. 1. Quilter 101 mini docked in their 10" BlockDock cab. 2. Quilter MicroBlock 45 pedal teamed with a 5E3 pine cab with a Emi Legend 12" and 3. an old Carvin SX50 1×12". I can get all three do to do the Deluxe Reverb,Vox AC15/30, E and F series Tweed tones that don't make me miss my tube amps. Wish I would have had the G1ON and the 17.7lb Quilter 1×10" combo back when I was in a blues band and gigging. Interface improvements from the G1ON… Improved display allows for more descriptive/longer patch names. Four pots act as master vol, bass, middle, treble during performance mode for global tone and volume tweeking. The four pots also make adjusting settings easier. For several years now, my pedalboard has had only ONE guitar "FX" pedal. First it was the G1Xon. Now it's the G1Xfour. I play both acoustic AND electric thru the pedal, and they BOTH sound great! Though I've played for over 40 years, I'm not a professional musician and rarely play out; but I do play a lot at home and IMO this is the best VALUE "name brand" guitar multi-FX pedal on the market. I am a home use player and wanted to run this in the effects loop of my 40 watt tube amp to get my preamp crunch without blowing out my windows. I quickly noted that the response was smooth and just what i wanted except that as i neared the full heel position to get the volume i wanted, i was getting some very loud popping from my amp which i worried might blow a speaker. I read online that other Ernie Ball vp owners had noted that there were loose solder contacts on the pot. I took a look and sure enough, one of the solder lugs was loose on mine too. The wire was soldered just fine but the lug was loosely crimped to the little board on the pot. I took the pedal apart pulled the pot out, crimped the solder lug better put it back together (which was a real pain to get the string wrapped correctly and back on the spring). With the pedal back together, it worked great and gave me exactly what i wanted with no popping. This is a great product but could really benefit from some better quality control.Jack

This volume pedal has a great, even volume swell. The addition of gain controls makes the volume pedal even more useful, however. When I'm playing bass, I sometimes want to increase volume for certain passages, but without the sudden change in tone that comes from an overdrive or boost pedal. This does that (I use a few different class D amps). Additionally, this allows me to have greater flexibility with my volume without needing to fiddle with my amp or bass' volume knobs while playing. On guitar, this can act as a nice, subtle boost that can push gain-ier amps (I use an Orange) into some sweet saturation. Great pedal.Derek P

I recently replaced a 5 watt Roland cube street with the more powerful cube street EX. I was disappointed that the EX did not come with Roland JC setting. The clean setting on the EX produced a sterile, cold sound that I warmed up nicely with the Behringer tube modeler. This was my only reason for purchasing this pedal. I have occasional use for a battery operated amp and this pedal allows me to get the warm tones that I require.Richard

Case is plastic to evidently help with cost. With the cost of musical equipment any help is great. I take very good care of equipment so I do not "stomp" on them. Pedal has quality sounds that seem to work within relm of eq'ing. This pedal has it's own drive built in although a bit sensitive. Take your time and you can dial in some quality tones and sounds. I play lots of various music ranging from southern, blues and Christian rock and have been able to fine something nice that works with each style or genre. Again the pedal controls seem a little sensitive so take your time when you start with the pedal. I enjoy expermiemting so this facet is a-ok by me. Over all good pedal.Bo L.

First impressions. Fast tracking and good options. Well laid out pedal. Would be more useful w/ different scales rather than just major modes, but the modes are a fun way to interact. Tone reproduction seems very synthetic. (Used on sax not guitar). The mash pitch bend is a great idea, however the tone of the harmonised notes is so plastic that it's not worth it for me. The Digitech DHP55 harmoniser i had in the mid 90s killed this. But that was a high end rack mount multiFX unit. Maybe on distorted guitar this would be a lot more effective. This is a well designed user friendly pedal at a great price that I'm sure will be a lot of fun for plenty of players. EDIT: those were first impressions on the day it arrived. After playing around a bit more today I found adding reverb after the Harmonizer really helped. Still sounds plasticy but its a fun effect. The modes setting is actually is a good way to interact. Tracking is superb and it also does a good job of harmonising chromatic/non diatonic notes.27jjk

Let me start with… The only good features of this pedal are the esthetics and nothing else. Having tried out other tc electronic models this is a real disappointment. The pedal features C D E F G A B tonal options with # toggle with and mash for infinite tonal possibilities however… When it comes to the scales it offers 10maj, Dorian, Phygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian and a custom form if you ever get them to work in the toneprint app. From the harmony perspective it offers -6th, -4th, -3rd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 3rd and 5th, 3rd and 6th and 3 tone print options if you ever get to make them work. I downloaded the tone print app on my apple Mac and I never got it to work. However the iPhone and iPad apps work only if you invest on a 35$ on a convertor-cable. After careful playing around with then tone print app the toneprints never saved any of my custom presets. The minor thirds never latched on properly, the feel is plastic and not organic, even though it is a versatile pedal it really lacks in quality. The octave does not sound deep and round as other brands, the only good solid song are 5th or dual 5ths. I wanted to use this pedal for harmonizing either Iron Maiden or Queen riffs but I would suggest to jam it out with a buddy because this will definitely provide that sweet double guitar harmonized tone.Rickingo

I have heard this Stereo Chorus in action. I wanted one for my own! Back-ordered.?.?.? Wait 3 months?.?.?. ok… I'll wait. It just came in and I have spent 2 glorious weeks finding out what it can do. With one amp (a Peavey Backstage Plus, 10", 35 watts) it sounds pretty good. Not quite as good as my Fender Princeton, 2X10" stereo chorus (I put in a baffle plate to help sonically isolate the 2 speakers…) Played stereo into 2 amps, Crate 35 watts, about 15 feet apart, feeding each one from the stereo outputs, it sounds lush, dreamy, swirly, and full of character. I mostly play ballads and love songs, nylon fingerstyle (think: Love Me Tender, In My life, Morning has Broken.. Side by Side, etc) This stereo chorus, on slow/moderate settings, is perfect to enhance a romantic feeling, without getting syrupy or seasick…. It was definitely worth the wait!!guitarpicker7

Don't buy this pedal. It's cheap, yes, but the quality is no good. First of all, it's made out of plastic. But there are bigger issues. With either of my Fendor Stratocasters, the thing distorts if I run standard-level sound through it. It's very distorted when the chorus is enabled. But even worse, only one of the two output channels actually has the chorus effect. The other output channel is a clean passthrough. The Level control is not stereo, so it only attenuates the output of the channel which has chorus, leaving the other channel at clean-passthrough level. Over-all, this thing is a piece of junk. It's not worth buying, at any price. If you own one, the best thing you can do is try to pawn it, or pitch it into the trashcan. You're much better off with something from Boss or Digitech. You can't buy cheap and expect to have good quality — you'll just end up wasting your money and your time. Life's too short. Just say "no".Ron

I bought this pedal about a week ago online through Guitar Center. I was skeptical as I've played and owned dozens of Distortion Pedals. MXR Distortion+, Big M*** Pi, Boss Metal Zone, Blackstar DistX to name a few. This pedal is extremely sturdy and well built. Built better than any Boss pedal. The knob/pots are top notch. Unfortunately my amp is a Fender Frontman 212R. The distortion on this amp is terrible. When I first plugged this pedal in…it sounded similar to the Blackstar DistX pedal. It had this honky distortion sound…very similar to Def Leppard's High N Dry album. I put new speakers in the Amp recently. Celestion V30's. Holy cow! This pedal now sounds like a Mesa Rectifier! The EQ on this pedal are extremely touchy. They also work together. If you set the High's above 12 o clock and set the low's to say 9 o clock, the High EQ is almost unbearable. However, setting the Bass and High at 12 o clock, the treble isn't as bad. Which is why I say they work off of each other. The Distortion is clear and not muddy at all. Chords sound great and do not get lost among the vast amount of Distortion. It's essentially an Overdrive pedal that you can add more distortion to by using the Aggression toggle switch. When set to off, it is a very good Overdrive. When set up to Blue, the gain is increased and it's kept very tight. When set down to Red, It has even more gain than blue and is a bit more flubby but not much. All in all great pedal! My only complaint is the switching between clean and Distortion. If you switch between Clean and Distortion the Pedal doesn't immediately switch to the Volume you have it set at…it kind of starts off low and quickly builds up to the volume you have it set at. It would be sincerely annoying in live applications.Devarim12

This is the best distortion pedal I have ever used. Its sounds great run into a good clean channel and doesn't need boosting although it stacks very well with other pedals. I love the versatility of the aggression modes and find all three useful. I tried it as a pre-amp but preferred it in front of my amp. I play metal and hard rock and this pedal has the sound in my head. I love it!!!!David

I bought this pedal from Scan, I didn't know they sold music equipment, previously used them happily for pc components. Arrived next day and cheapest price on the internet. This pedal is hard rock and metal heaven. Amp Like distortion even when running into the clean channel of a solid state amp. Off mode is good, blue mode is the best a distortion could be and red adds a bit of thickness. I don't see me using anything other than blue mode. This pedal never gets muddy at any distortion level, always articulate making it a wonderful tool for solos. Even works fantastically with single coils of a USA Strat. A must for High gain enthusiasts. I don't normally like to buy expensive or boutique style pedals as I think they are usually overpriced and overhyped but this is worth every penny.ianto

First, I have to admit, I'm a pedal junky. Not Sorry. I got this pedal on a whim to use up some backstage points. I planned to put it on a b board which is much smaller than my main board. This pedal takes up quite a bit of space due to its large footprint. If you are looking for a compact distortion pedal, you may want to keep looking. It's about the same size as some way huge pedals I have. I have one other TC box (HOF mini) and I think that is an awesome pedal. At first, I wasn't too stoked on the tone of this pedal. I eventually found some tones that I felt were usable. The thing that surprised me most was the mid scoop switch. I am not a "scoop the mids" metal guy, but to me, this pedal sounds best in the scooped or fat position. I thought I would like the raw position, but after the first day, I don't think I've used it in the raw setting. I think it works best in conjunction with a boost or overdrive pedal. If this is your first effect of this type, you may like it right off the bat, but if you are a little more experienced and really know how you want to shape your tone, you may find it a bit limited in its tone shaping abilities. All in all, for the price, it's a decent distortion. Always nice to have choices. Probably a good pick for those of us on a budget, or players just getting into using effects, but if you are a pro, really picky about your sound, or have a ton of cash, there are better boxes out there. I would reluctantly recommend. It's kinda like licorice, some people will love it, others will not.MCL

Although I haven't played professionally for several years, I still know a good piece of equipment when I check it out. I think that one would be hard pressed to find a better sounding pedal in this price range and there's enough overdrive for pretty much anything. The real surprise is that it has the versatility to clean up very well allowing the tone of your guitar to shine through in a natural manner for blues/rock etc. where you'd just like a little clip going on. I haven't had this pedal long enough to attest to the reliability on down the road, but am very happy with it performance wise at this time.Technodog

I was looking at purchasing a Helix LT and upon researching I came across the Pod Go Wireless. It does everything I required from the Helix but at less than half the price, size and weight. You can dial in some great tones, I use it through an 80w Marshall combi straight into the FX return (turning off the cab sim on the Pod) and it sounds very impressive. The amount of effects to choose from is incredible and you can tweak so many variables to get that perfect tone. The wah treadle is very good but it’s not so great when used as a volume pedal as it doesn’t seem to gradually increase/decrease the volume, it’s almost on/off. The wireless feature is very good, I’ve not had any connection issues and don’t have to worry about treading on my cable, which I’m very prone to. Overall, for what I need in a jamming/garage band capacity it is perfect and I’m very, very pleased with the purchase. PMT delivered the next day, it was very well packaged and was the best price I found on the internet.Martin M.

Overall: Looking at the G5n as ONLY a guitar multi-effects pedal still makes it well worth the price, but that would be selling it WAY short in terms of what this self-contained digital beast can do. For those of us who also play keyboards, synths, drum machines, and bass, think of this as an entire rack of beautiful effects processing options that open up a whole world of pro tone sculpting possibility. Yes, these effects by themselves do sound digital (because they ARE), but if you start with a good analog sound source and finish with a mic’d up tube amp or quality tube DI, you can capture some serious pro quality sounds with beautifully complex depth and texture. Line6 and Boss both charge significantly more for products that do absolutely NOTHING better than the G5n. So why dump any more money than absolutely necessary into a digital effects unit that you know will become a doorstop eventually anyway? The Zoom G5n delivers every last nuance of the best effects units available on the market today, and it does it all at a price you can afford to replace in a few years. PROS * Equal or better sound quality than competing products from Line6 and Boss, all at a much lower price. * Better and more intuitive user interface than Line6 and Boss competition. * The “ZNR” noise reduction effect performs amazingly well, and can be tweaked perfectly for any application. Especially for those of us who hate unnecessary pickup and amp noise in our recordings, this is worth the price of the entire unit alone. I’ve actually paid the same price as this unit for a Waves noise reduction plugin that I don’t like as much as the one inside the G5n. * No wimpy 12AX7 tube output that everybody knows won't make much difference, and which just becomes a maintenance liability over time. The old G5 had one of these, and Zoom should be applauded for ditching the gimmick. * Takes a huge load off of your DAW in terms of effects plugins. Also, unlike your DAW, you can monitor any instrument through the G5n without any noticeable latency. * The two tone booster dials are great for when you’ve been crafting new patches through headphones, but then you want to plug the G5n into your amp and you’re frustrated because you don’t hear the same frequency balance out of your amp that you did in your headphones (coming directly out of the G5n headphone jack). The two tone booster dials let you tweak the EQ of your frequency response (in a pleasant and natural/analog sounding way) so that your amp sounds accurate tonally to what you were hearing in the headphones. This keeps you from having to save two differently tweaked patches of the same effects chain just so you can hear the correct frequency balance through either your headphones or your amp. CONS * USB recording interface is convenient for recording rough ideas, but not realistic as a pro DI/converter. Luckily the stereo ¼” analog out jacks do a good job of letting you use your tube preamps for DI recording anyway, but it would be nice not to have to pass through an extra layer of D/A conversion if not absolutely necessary. * Amp & cabinet models are excellent tools for tone shaping, but no they don’t sound like the real deal (and no digital emulation ever will if you're listening back through quality DAC). Nonetheless, that doesn’t mean running reasonable gain settings on these amps and cabs into the clean channel of your tube amp can’t still create very impressively detailed recording tones. * Some people have reported that too many effects in a chain causes the DSP chip in the G5n to overload, but I’ve found the only time that happens is when you’re trying to chain multiple amps and cabinet models altogether, and it’s not something you (sonically) should want to attempt anyway. With one amp and one cabinet selected, you can still add a compressor, delay, reverb, and chorus, etc. There's plenty of DSP here to get you into trouble (in a good way). TIP: The modeled amp "heads" ften don’t sound as good as simply running one of the distortion pedals directly into a modeled cabinet. Requires less DSP too.Christopher

When i started looking for a replacement to many analogue fx processors I didn't expect to find anything asa a combo that had good clean output. I tested the GT100,GS80, Line-6 and a few lower level competitors to calibrate usefulness and reliability versus audio clarity using a set of AE-1 Studio Monitors routed through a Fender 100 Series Tube Amp. The results came down to either the Gt100 (which I found a little shallow) versus this Zoom G5n (btw -the G3xn is identical but doesnt have capacity). The thing that sold me on the G5n is its user interface. Simply the best and easiest to program on the fly. It is a lot of fun but you have to discipline what you want to achieve. It comes with a stack of patches but I suggest buyers to check and do the firmware update and get the latest patches (released monthly plus there is an Artist list of User Patches) = 1000's but you'll make your own. It isn't hard. The audio output on this G5n is a lot deeper and if you run the Boost you can get rich warm tone from a digital amp like the Vox 30 I tested. When using a digital combo amp you need turn off all the FX and use the default Amp or find an amp that doesn't distort the clarity from G5n. The Amp FX on the G5n are better through a clean digital setup. Analogues need to make sure head is also clean setup except where you just use G5n for FX and remove Amps from bank. Either way the device is very user friendly for harmony with getting the job done quickly and move on to playing guitar as this is a tool not an instrument.3times3times

The Zoom G5n is an excellent choice for those seeking a multi effect platform or even those wishing to add pedal effects to their guitar tone and who are on a tight budget. Your pedal chain is easily customisable with all parameters visible and tweekable at the turn of a knob. With 5 descent amp Sims which already sound fairly authentic, when edited you can get pretty close to the amps which they are emulating. Purists, or gear snobs will always argue that "you can't beat a real tube amp" or " Kemper, Helix, Axe fx are better" they may offer more but I doubt if they sound 5, 10 or even 20 times better in line with there cost!! For the price of a "boutique" pedal you can have nearly every pedal your ever likely to need, without the need for a bucket load of patch cables!! Several talented guitarists have posted customised patches on YouTube, covering every genre and the most popular/sought after artists tones. Sure I fancied some of its more expensive competitors but I really don't need the ability, nor do I have the time to deep edit such things as individual components within a particular amp or pedal. I simply wanted something which offered the range of tones and could replicate the sounds of my favourite guitarists, then just plug in and play and the G5n does thatand does it very well!! Sturdy unit full of good quality effects. This is the first "cheap" unit that has impressed me with its pre amps. It even manages a passable vox sound that others at this price point fail to achieve. My favourite things about this unit are as follows : 1. The amount of usable presets out the box. Even the more whacky ones can generally be quickly tweaked into something usable. Other brands tend to fill their presets with ridiculous over the top high gain, and what I would call low budget sci-fi sound effects. Boss have done a good job with the GT1. 2. Ease of editing. While you can access the effects chain easily through the menu system, the buttons along the top physically represent a typical effects chain. Press and hold for a second on any one and you are straight into the effect behind it for easy editing or changing to a different effect. Negatives: lack of an on/off switch. It switches on by plugging in an instrument cable – minor annoyance but that's just me. Only other thing is no battery indicator, and I seriously doubt the 7hr battery life claim. The supplied ones died after about 2-3 hrs and the duracells I replaced them with haven't fared much better. I do have a power supply but wanted to see how the battery's would hold up if I had to do a gig on them. Probably wouldn't trust them and would carry two sets as backup rather than one.David B.

This is overall a great pedal. This will give you a wide variety of tones and effects that you can personalize for whatever music you play. Other pedals will offer maybe one tone and you may have to try different ones and might not be happy with them or have to buy multiple ones and spend lots of money to have a well set up pedal board. You can literally spend all day picking out distortion pedals and feel lost on where to go. With this you can go through a wide variety and set it up however you want and save the settings. This isn't some plug and play kinda pedal. You will need to spend time with it and get to know it. It is kinda confusing and there are YouTube videos that help as well. The sounds are decent for the price. I downloaded all three pdfs are they are basically useless when it comes to setting up patches, adding an external pedal and the overall operation. I gave up on trying to assign functions to the FS-6 I bought with it. There are no real explications how to use the 6 assignment functions. I think the headphone output is mono as I can only hear in one ear. You can get some decent patches off of tone exchange I'll probably sell it .Kenneth

Overall: I agree with the last review, this pedal definitely stands on its own and keeps up with the other Big blue Box! It's algorithms are top notch, with a lot of them only found on this pedal. I've had mine since the first week it came out and couldn't be happier! I've owned tons of $300 plus verb pedals and this is my favorite so far.Doug

As soon as I heard the first preset I was hooked. Lush reverbs and shimmering tones makes this one of the most fun reverb pedals I have played. I love that you also get a plug in version fro amplitude and can save presets on you computer and download them to your pedal. also, did I mention its a USB interface as well that you can use with any DAW?Mark P.

I was looking for a good multi-effects pedal option and found this Flamma FM10. It's loaded with a bunch of different amp models and effects. I was able to dial and EQ everything. The expression pedal can also be put to use as a volume pedal, wah, gain control, and several other things. I was able to create several personal patches and have used them all in live settings. They sounded great. Which means a lot coming from me because I am EXTREMELY picky about gear and tone. Other benefits are that it functions as an audio interface, it has stereo outs, a headphone out, and aux in. It fits in a backpack and a gig bag. Depending on where the show is and how a musician needs to get there, this effects unit is going to travel well in all circumstances. This is a great tool for practising and evaluating the accuracy of your playing – I mix the sound of a metronome in with my guitar input. Amazing little box of tricks. I absolutely love it for recording ideas, something which I’d been doing with an iPhone prior to getting this. The video done by Andertons on this product sold me on it. Great for saving riffs when you're noodling or coming up with song ideas. Sound quality is excellent and the pedal is small and easy to operate. I like the fact that I can transfer riffs back to my computer and use them in Garageband. The app is disappointing ,however, does not function as stated. Editing clips just doesn't work. I had never used Line 6 products, always Boss ME 70, then ME 80. Back in the early 1980's I purchased several Boss pedals and still use some of them. When I decided to put together a pedal board, after spending over 2000 on pedals, there was something missing. Then I started watching the pedal boards of Nashvilles studio pro's. Over half have the M9 on their pedal boards. So after purchasing this and having sometime working with it, it is the most awesome sounding pedal now on my Freidman board. Their will always be new pedals for different sounds or qualities of sounds, but nothing has been better than the Mp fo a foundation of my sound. So fast and easy to use. I take my gear purchases very seriously, and I have high expectation for acquisitions, which are usually preceeded by extensive research, review reading, cost analysis, etc. Although I am thankful to have enough tools for any professional necessities, I have a general philosophy about having the best quality I can afford, taking care of what I have, using tools as deeply as possible, not having excessive amounts of things that are not needed or especially go unused, and getting products that allow me to continue using with versatility as I grow in my practice and occupation. Regarding the M9, I can say that I have been using one since 2010 and have integrated it solidly into concerts, studio recordings, and other myriad projects of these past years. I just acquired a second M9, for expanded uses and to be certain that I will be able to securely continue solid use. If you are considering this product, I would guess that you are familiar with how much this unit is capable of. I can attest that this box is excellent. For its small size, it carries 100 pedals worth of effects, of which can be stored in multiple settings, modified in real time with tap tempo, and with a bit of utilitarian looping. Comparing this to three boutique pedals, for example, one would pay likely twice as much or more, with 97 less options, and likely not have access to saved settings for sets, track recordings, etc, nor be able to use tap tempo which syncs to all effects in chain, and a pedal for changing effect parameters (not included). I cannot say enough good things about this pedal, but hopefully this review will help others looking for experienced reviews to help them decide if this is worthy of purchase. A little confusing to get started, but the automatic save and all those great tones made up for it! Like other user comments, the distortion patches are all very high endy. I attempted to tweak the distortion patches for an hour or two then gave up and just use my amp distortion. The patches all sound great through my fx loop — especially the delays. My current favs are the ping pong, univibe, and trem. I have the both the green and blue Line 6 stomps for years and am glad for the extra space and lower weight on my pedal board.Sara
