Build A Guitar Amp Cabinet For Sale (2024 Update)

I just completed my Mod 102 kit. An excellent experience! I was delighted with the quality of components, clarity of instructions, and, perhaps most importantly, the sound of the amp. It is very loud – currently running into my Fender Twin Reverb cab (2×12) and very sweet! I will be running it into a new 1×12 cab with a new Celestion G12 M Heritage 'Greenback' when I get a case for the speaker (on order). My only criticism (and something to look out for) is that the chassis is very nicely painted in gray gunmetal paint. Even following the directions to file all the holes, it is very hard to get a good ground connection at every point a terminal strip connects. I worried about this, and about 1/3rd of the way through the build, took an ohm meter to check all the connections, and as I had suspected, some of the connections were not great (9-10 ohms or so!) So I removed the terminal strips (with the components I had already soldered still attached) and scraped away the paint under the tabs of the strips to ensure a good connection. Re-testing showed virtually zero resistance. I'd strongly recommend scraping the paint away at all holes under the chassis before getting started on the build. Even better, suggest that Amplified Parts leave the inside chassis unpainted (at least around the important holes). Aside that one criticism, I am delighted with the kit and with Amplified Parts. Everything was delivered promptly and they are a class outift. I'll probably try some of their other kits soon.vpmerlyn

I spent three evenings building the MOD102. The instructions are very easy to understand and the amp has a great Fender sound. I had one grounding issue that was easily fixed with a little help from tech support, which was excellent. If you're good at following step by step instructions and can solder well this is a fun little amp to build. Only small issue is the labels. They could stand an improvement.Brandon

I just finished this amp build and it sounds fantastic! I also just finished a Marshall 18 Watt clone and I have to say that the Mod102+ holds its own very nicely alongside the Marshall. In fact, I will probably use the Mod102+ for recording because it sounds amazing at lower volumes (the Marshall is loud AF). Honestly, if I were only going to build one of them today, it would be the Mod. I'm blown away by the tone! Great kit with excellent instructions. Great bang for the buck. The parts all seem to be top quality. I love the old style cloth solid core wire, too. I find it much easier to work with than modern stranded wire. The labels are a bit lame but I covered them with packing tape as suggested before cutting them out and they look fine. If you're thinking about building an amp, build this one.danjbeckett

Incredibly well made. Vintage 30 speaker is a bargain in this cab. Cannot beat the price. And the cab was shipped in double boxes, with double corrugated cardboard each, quite bulletproof packaging! This is the best deal you will find for an extended speaker cab of this quality hands down! The Vintage 30 speaker on its own is nearly $150 at most places, making the cabinet so cheap for this unit that you cannot even build your own for less money. The cabinet is gig worthy and is wired for a parallel speaker extension…however the soft vinyl covering, which looks nice, could possibly damage easy over time (*one and only complaint). I am extremely happy with the build quality and the sound of this 12" speaker with the open back cab perfectly fills out a missing niche in my speaker stack. At this price point you will not find a better value anywhere. Highly recommended!Stephen

This cabinet has a Celestion Vintage 30; a speaker which produces powerful and articulate overdrive tones. In my opinion, the cleans from this speaker are good but not great; its darker than a Creamback with less sparkle. The cabinet itself is very small and light, and is perfect for low-wattage heads and home recording. If you want balanced modern overdrive tones, this cab is just right.TeddyWilson222

I purchased the Hughes and Kettner Tubemeister 18 Twelve combo, I got a fantastic deal on it used. It arrived and looks and performs like a new amp. Extremely loud for 18 watts, the blue backlight looks awesome and the sound from this is pure tube joy!! The Redbox Output is very handy for recording and running direct to the board. These with the 12" speaker are getting rare and hard to find. If you can find one do yourself a favor and buy it, you'll love all 18 watts of its warm overdriven tube saturation!kyjones64

I bought this cabinet with the intention of beefing up my Hot Rod deluxe which it did. The combination of closed back from this cabinet and the open back of the deluxe resulted in a much more richer sound not to mention that at 4 ohms with the cabinet the amp seems to be more responsive to my playing. It also looks cool sitting under the Hot Rod Deluxe III. It not only sounds great with the Hot Rod but with my 30 watt PRS amp head, a Quilter 200 and boy was I surprised when I plugged in my Mesa Mark IV. Awesome little cabinet for the money. This was bought to add an extension cabinet to my mesa boogie nomad 100. My nomad was a single 12 speaker with an open back cab and needed a little more bass. the sealed fender cabinet was the exact same dimensions and fits nicely under the boogie. Sound was as I expected, bass increase as well as a tight sound from the closed back cabinet. Also raised the nomad to a better overall height. Very happy with my purchase. I did not give it 5 stars for several reasons. 1) made in Mexico which I expected for the price but that is the problem! Speaker jack fell out of the back of the cabinet when I removed the cable. Compared to yesteryear and I have owned a lot of fender equipment construction was much better. To repair the speaker jack and not go through returning the cabinet I opened the back to see what holds the jack in place. Half the screws used to seal the back of the cabinet were to short and already stripped out. There were two different length screws used and none were long enough to do the job properly! They were #6 wood screws so a trip to Lowes for proper hardware about 8 duckets worth of new fasteners (went to #8 wood screws and new finishing washers) took care of the problem. The jack is another issue that will require a large fender washer and a new jack with longer threads. about 6 duckets in hardware to repair properly. The strips of wood that hold the back on are only pressed wood and one side was spilt open from not predrilling holes and forcing the screws to create there own holes when installed. This is a time saver at the factory but poor practice in my opinion! The front baffle that holds the speaker in place was held in with 6 bolts, nuts and washers. All were loose and if I did not retighten these the vibration from the speaker would have caused these all to come apart! So over all construction was less then stellar and about what I expected for the price. Still final quality checks should have caught all of this on the assembly line.Strat Blaster

I bought this to go with a Tone King Gremlin head. I figured a fender speaker would pair well with a fender clone amp. The enclosure is quite nice. The speaker however is not. I did read the poor reviews the celestion 70/80 gets online, they are spot on. This speaker is so shrill I felt like my ears were going to bleed. It has a pronounced mid scoop. Instead of returning I decided I like the fender box enough ( and the reasonable price compared to others ) and bought a different speaker. After swapping the 70/80 with a Eminence Cannabis rex, it really sounds great.Josh B

I bought this speaker cabinet to complete a stack (of sorts). I bought a Peavey 50 watt amp that has 4 X 10 inch speakers in its cabinet. I like the classic look, but I like the versatility of the amp. An alternate version of this amp has a 2 X 12 inch speaker option. So, I thought that this cabinet with its 2 X 12 inch Celestion speakers could be an alternative speaker set up, when the 4 X 10 inch set up was disconnected and it is plugged into the output. The is also an extension speaker output with this amp, so both sets of speakers can be connected to the amp at the same time, if desired. So, this is suppose to be about this speaker cabinet, and the bottom line is that it is a good overall unit, and has a classic vibe with the tweed exterior covering. I was more interested in the speakers that were in this unit, which happen to be Celestions. They work well with the amp. I think that it depends on the venue as to how to set the amp and speakers up. The other thing that I should mention is that the 2 X 12 speaker cabinet can be separated from the combo amp and there can be a broader sound spectrum. I will say that I was a bit concerned about the unit being made in Vietnam, but, the quality control is very good and the unit will be around for several years.Noone

Mostly using this for studio applications. It comes standard with one g12 t75 and a vintage 30. I've been using a fathead and a 57 on each speaker. 4 mics on that cab literally sounds like I have two different cabs in the other room and they sound awesome. Overall: Great cab from peavey, the speakers pair up great together. The tone is awesome. It's not too heavy, works great with my JSX head. Overall Build quality, grill and covering are very good. Bought this to pair with my Orange Micro Terror and Micro Dark. I did a lot of research before buying this and I had high expectations based on what i read and heard. I am actually blown away by the quality and sound of this. These little amps can get pretty loud and this cab takes it and can be pushed even more. It has a surprisingly round full sound, doesn’t get fizzy when the gain is cranked. I definitively recommend this, especially if pairing with one of those little Orange Micros. They sound great running through it and they fit perfectly on top.BDub

I paired this up with a Vox BC108 cabinet for a full range sound spectrum and 50watts at 4ohms capacity into a Quilter Interblock 45watt amp. The sound is nothing short of magnificent! warm, deep, rich bass to nice, tight, clear highs that sound like angelic voices. You would not believe the sound was coming from two 8" speaker cabinets. Pair this with a few favorite pedals once in a while and I can practice guitar, 4 string Bass and acoustic guitar all with one rig and very minimal space taken up I my bedroom. I have never had so much fun for less than a Benjamin. I have some low watt heads and this can makes them come alive. The coolest thing: you forget the size of the cab as you play. If you like to mix equipment, just get one. No regrets. Solid fun.Bashfull

I recently completed the British 18W head kit from Tube Depot, and can't say enough good things about it! From start to finish, the kit exceeded my expectations. Ordering, shipping, and customer service were top-notch. No issues with components. The instructions and documentation were amazing, worth their weight in gold. The end result was an amplifier that sounds incredible! I incorporated a few of the suggested options- PPIMV, Tremolo HI/LO sw., Tube/SS Rectifier sw., and choke. The sound is amazing, I'm finding it very difficult turning the amp off- once I start playing through the amp I don't want to stop. I would absolutely recommend Tube Depot for anyone interested in building a guitar amplifier. The clear, well-written instructions really made this an enjoyable project. I ordered this kit with a mod to use KT 66 power tubes. The changes were easy to make and it sounds fantastic. The classic JTM 45 tone at a manageable volume level with the master volume control. Just to test it out I've used a power soak and the tone is exactly the same using the master volume. A couple of real nice features of the design are the negative feedback switch and the ability to switch between solid state and tube ratification (the tube sounds better to my ears). Sound: I’m very happy with the sound quality. It may not sound identical to the original speakers modeled but honestly I don’t have that good of an ear to know the difference. I do know my high gain and crunch patches with the Vintage or Green sound just like I want, and for clean-ish tones the Essex with a Vox amp does the job quite nicely. Whether it has the mythical “amp in the room” sound or not is going to be up to each user’s own ears. I will say it sounds more organic and amp-like than any FRFR I’ve used and leave it at that. Features: This has so many features it’s hard to list what I find most useful. Physical features like being fairly lightweight and having tiltback legs are certainly helpful to an old guy like me. The tiltback seems extreme but it works well and I don’t feel the need for an amp stand. MIDI or L6 link to remotely change cabinets with each patch is great, and with the L6 link it can easily be done within each patch. I also like that the L6 link runs audio and data. Why use 2 cables when you can to it all with one? The ability to use it as a standard FRFR to run IR is another cool feature and I like that if I need to I can go direct to FOH via through the PC+ and use a separate IR to FOH and speaker modeling in the cab. Lastly, this can be used with any modeler. You can send MIDI messages via standard 5 pin MIDI cable to change speakers and IR within patches from just about any modeling product. If something ever trumps the Helix, I’ll still have a great cab to pair it with. Ease of Use: It’s incredibly easy to get good sounds. Turn the knob on the top until you get a speaker you like. The speaker modeling sounds great. I’ve dabbled with some of the IR’s and they sound great too. Some folks have complained that it doesn’t have enough volume but that’s not been the case with me. You will need to make sure the output levels on your modeler are properly set to get the most volume and avoid clipping. If you aren’t familiar with how to do this, I would suggest checking out YouTube videos by Jason Sadites or Steve Sterlacci on how to properly set patch levels. It’s super easy and mostly common sense, but something a lot of folks overlook. And don’t forget to include your solo boosts when setting levels!! Quality: By all appearances it seems very well built and sturdy and has a quality feel. I know there are people using these on the road and that also says a lot about the build quality. It’s been tossed in and out of my trunk a few times now with minimal wear and tear showing. It would be nice if it was made of birch and covered with Tolex, but that would only add to the cost and weight. As it is the box is solid. Value: At first glance $799 seems expensive for a 1×12 cab. However, when you consider what it can do that others can’t and then compare it to other 1×12 FRFR that are $1,000 and up it starts becoming a better and better value. If you don’t need MIDI or remote speaker switching, then there’s also the standard Powercab that’s a couple hundred less. Sounds the same just not as many features. Manufacturer Support: Over the years I’ve purchased quite a bit of Line6 gear and they have always provided me with great support. They have a very good user forum with plenty of knowledgeable and helpful people and Line6 also has reps in some of the larger gear forums. Line6 has a good history of product updates as well. The PC+ has already received an update with some additional features and I expect they will continue to update as needed. They seem to do a pretty good job of listening to their customers when it comes to requesting features etc. The Wow Factor: Speaker modeling, FRFR, and IR all in one cab that sounds really good. That’s pretty wow to me! I think this will appeal to players like myself who use modeling and are looking for the best sound without a lot of fussing, or just plain don’t like the sound of an FRFR as much as a normal amp and cab. Overall: I just went back to Helix after using Mesa MKV and Friedman JJ amps. The band doesn’t play a lot of gigs that require miking up the guitars or using direct FOH, so the speaker I chose had to sound great on its own and not just something to monitor myself with. The last time I went down the FRFR road it didn’t work out very well. I know it’s not the boxes it’s me, but regardless I got tired of constantly trying to find the right IR or thinking I found one that sounded good at home only to have it sound like crap at band volume yada yada. When I was researching speakers for the Helix I heard a lot of great things about the Powercab so I thought I’d give it a shot. The speaker modeling is somewhat unique, and I thought it might be the shorter path to better tone for me. It arrived 2 days after I ordered and the set up was very easy. I had already decided to use L6 link instead of XLR because I wanted to remotely control the cab via the Helix and not have to set up MIDI. Everything I expected from Line 6. This Power Cab Plus 112 is blowing my mind right now. I usually never go with solid state amps. I've been playing through Fender Deluxe Reverbs, Hot Rod Deluxe' and my latest Fender Princeton Reverb. These are for sure amazing go to amps. However, to my ears, with the HELIX LT that I play through, I'm getting similar tones and even more using the built-in speaker models that come with stock with the Power Cab Plus 112. I've never had this much versatility in a rig before. I love it. I also use the genuine Line 6 L6 Link cable (witch is just a good quality AES/EBU cable) connected between my HELIX LT and the Power Cab Plus 112 so that I can change speaker models on the fly with my presets. I really can't ask for more. Simple, light weight, professional sounding tones, all at my toe tips. This is good times for sure.FELIX

I had high hopes, when I saw that Line 6 was offering powered speaker cabs, I thought wow ! Like the Tech 21 Power Engine but better !!!! Wrong… I sold my pair of Tech 21 Power Engines when I purchased a pair of these cabs… wrong move. I unpacked the Power Cabs and thought .. BEAUTIFUL !!! Sturdy, stylish… when I plugged in my HELIX…. I literally could not get a usable sound out of it, I fiddled for hours. After a few days of fiddling with new presets I was able to get a decent basic sound so I thought I was golden. I took it out for on gig doing a outdoor surf meet event… OUCH ! Fizzy, treble ridden, buzz saw city. I could not even get a decent volume from it, the tone because it was so "HIFI" was so buried in the mix I could barely hear myself. Besides the lack of volume, I could not believe the absolute atrocious tone I was getting(think BUZZSAW). This is not a good match for a helix or any floor processors or modelers. I regret getting rid of my Tech 21's they were a tad noisy but they sounded 100% better than these. I keep hearing and seeing the reviews for the Plus version, but seems odd that for something that is supposed to simply amplify the sound you get from your Helix would do such a poor job. WIth the covers and the shipping I paid mucho dinero so saying I am unhappy is an understatement. I've been told with tweaking you can get the cab to sound good, I've spent hours doing this. I don't think its possible. Avoid this… I have been using my cabs as vocal monitors, just because I would get smashed if I tried to sell them. I've used this for one gig, maybe 6 times at rehearsal, sadly they are horrible, giving it 2 stars is quite generous….Guitar Kahuna

The JCM 900 series is the best you can get and the last of the Marshall cabinets to feature the older Celestions before they sold to a Chinese firm and the production quality changed a little bit. Very impressive construction. The only (minor) problem is the mounting hardware for the speakers do not line up with the EMINENCE speakers I put in. It's only a minor problem because TWO of four positions on the speakers DO line up and hold the speakers firmly in place. Very well built, great price, quick delivery time. Well done.James T.

The Quality is Excellent. I paid the high price figuring I was helping a small American company make it thru these Covid times. The 2 12" speakers sound better that I expected for the price point as I was expecting to swap out the stock speakers right away, but I will wait and see. The whole package is a screamin deal! Paired this with a Hughes & Kettner TM-18 also purchased from AMS. The Celestion V-30 speaker is something I’ve used before and is an awesome speaker for a variety of tones. PRS just makes gear right. The cab is built solid. Cleans are absolutely pure and as you break up the signal the cab projects crisp. It maintains this integrity as you get to “11”. Very impressed but not surprised as it is PRS.Brad E

Considering the reasonable price, I decided to try this cab. I've been playing for about 40 years, but I don't have a lot of experience experimenting with different speakers and cabs. I had been told by many other guitarists not to bother with the new Celestion V-type because it is made in China, yet I just couldn't resist the price. I must say, I'm pleasantly surprised with this cab. I play mostly clean, and sometimes a little overdrive, but never distortion. The cab does sound evenly balanced across the frequency spectrum. For my taste and style, I prefer a bit more scoop in the low mids, and occasionally, the bottom end in this cab is a bit too soft for me, but that could be due to the depth of the cab and not the speakers themselves. I can't speak for how this cab would do with heavy metal or even classic rock, but there are certainly no frequencies that seem to jump out and make the cab sound notched. Also, I like the clarity of the mids. Luckily, I didn't get any mud from this cab, just a nice, smooth balance.sparrow

This is my third Seismic Cab and I'm happy with all of them. For the money they are an absolute steal. This 1×12 has a nice full sound and the bass response of a much larger cabinet. I got my 1×12 cabinet for compact use. It works and sound great. Bad knees and joints from being prior military makes a 412 or 212 hauling to practice or gigs a pain, so compartmentalizing it all is good. It’s way easier to swap speakers too. It’s sturdy which is good. I recommend it.William B.

This is my second Seismic 1×12. The first one I bought was years ago… this new one has some improvements over the original in terms of fit n finish. When I bought the first one, you had to install the T nuts your self. This one came with them pre installed. The only issue for this cab is the spacing holes are meant for Celestion and my example did not fit my Eminence speaker at all! So if you are planning to load an Eminence speaker in here, you may have issues. Otherwise…. I really do not think you can beat these. Those 440live cabinets aren't even as good.Max S.

Blackstar make great kit – Ideally they need some smaller more powerfull kit in the HT range though – The HT5 is too small to gig and the HT20 as a combo could really do with being lighter and smaller. An HT15 about the size of a Blues Junior would be ideal.Reviewed by Andertons Music Co.
