1. Marshall Jvm410hjs – Joe Satriani Guitar Amplifier Tube Head

The marshall jvm410h joe satriani edition 100w head is an addition to the marshall signature series. marshall's r&d engineers worked vefry closely with satriani to craft the jvm410hjs. after much experimentation and an assortment of trials that involved satriani using prototypes during recording and touring, they signed off on the final version and the jvm410hjs went into production. the most notable difference from the original jvm410 is that the reverb pots have been replaced with four nose gates, one for each channel, and each with their own threshold. a mid shift button has been added and can be used with both the od1 and od2 channels. the clean channel is based on the 6100 when on the green mode, with the orange and red modes being hotter variations. the crunch channel takes the original jvm410 crunch and adds some of the popular marshall "afd" circuit to it. the od channels are voiced identically, based on the jvm410 od1 but with the gain scaled back slightly and a smoother transition between modes. the mid shift button determines the difference in mid character between the original jvm410 od1 and od2 tone, moving the mids from around 650khz (mid shift off) to around 500khz (mid shift on). the jvm410hjs is powered by el34 tubes and has two master volumes, the supplied footswitch allows you to switch between channels, modes, master volumes, fx loop and now the noise gates and mid shift as well. there is also a full midi implementation.

Extremely versatile amp. I play a lot of electric blues but I grew up on hard rock/metal. Today I also play a little bluegrass, country, classical, pop and whatever suits my mood at the time. But at the end of the day, I usually revert to a heavier sound. Now the Marshall has a nice clean sound, although not as clean as my old Fender Pro Reverb. You can't have everything. Where this amp really shines is in its ability to generate anything from mild overdrive to extreme high gain. With this amp I can get high gain harmonics that I could not get from other amps, even with heavy gain effects. The only negative really is that the amp is quite physically heavy.Fuzzy
Firstly, I am in a bar/party cover band of older (>30 years to nearly 60) musicians with day jobs. We are not all Recent Hits, but do mostly songs people have heard of in all years from mid 60s to this year. The flexibility of this head is its big feature for someone like me. This is not a prescriptive review — this is just how I use it. Some of the skeptics have wondered why you would need 4 channels with 3 tones each. They have a good point, but not one that applies to a cover band. If I had to have one amplifier, it would have to produce the tones that this amp can do on channel 2 (crunch) green and orange, and channel 3 (OD1) green and orange. Crunch orange and OD1 green are quite similar and are the tones of the classic plexis and old Marshalls. Crunch green is what you would want for "clean" tone with a Marshall level of compression and just a little breakup for an electric guitar. OD1 at orange is what you would do for distorted classic rock — adding an overdrive in front of a plexi or a very saturated pickup, for example. For every song I really like, and everything I would do if I wasn't doing covers, those two channels at those two colors would cover it. For gigs, I can set channel 1 (clean) and Channel 4 (OD2) to be more extreme. The clean channel is actually what i use to be my acoustic guitar and occasionally as my hollow body electric emulating an acoustic. It is not perfect, nor is as good as having a specialized acoustic amp or clean tone jazz amp. However, it is good enough, and it simplifies the signal path to not have separate amps, and there is enough separate EQ to make it work. Channel 4 can be used for dirtier, more distorted stuff, and the weird thing is that now I use it entirely for country. My band doesn't do any metal, and the heaviest guitar sounds we do are the likes of Carrie Underwood. Getting the hiss to go away is not that big of a deal — put an MXR Smart Gate or any other gate I've tried into the _serial_loop_ and twist the knobs — it will take care of the problem. The JS head might be better and I haven't tried it. I do appreciate that you can't use the OD channels on this without a noise gate, but it isn't a big dial to fix. The reverb is good but nothing special. Reading this review before submitting, I realize that the oddest thing is that I personally have no use for any of the red versions of the four channels. That is probably a classic rock attitude — this thing has a lot more metal tone than I will ever use, so you should use other reviews if you want that.Iceandsnow
This is just and amazing head… I can't complement it enough. I wanted so many of the iconic Marshall tones but couldn't afford to go out and buy a JCM 800, 900, Plexi…etc. This head truly does a great job of getting all the tones your looking for. It does take a little dialing in with all the different modes in each channel to find what they all do… but once you have it kind of figured out its a tone machine. the included foot switch is a pleasant surprise also. It's programmable and works like a charm with just a normal guitar cable. I have also used the midi switching capabilities and they are also wonderful, though not as easy to use as the foot switch. If you are a gigging musician or just want a lot of options…..get one of these!Tony

The PRS Sonzera 20 is a very good guitar amplifier. It sound exactly like a FENDER Twin Reverb in terms of providing a clear, realistic sound with plenty of powerful bass response. Unlike the TR, the PRS Sonzera 20 is much more compact and a lot easier to transport. It weighs about 42 lbs. compared to the TR's 62 lbs. This amp uses the same 6L6GC power tubes as the TR. I really like the PRS Sonzera 20 a lot…I'm actually thinking about purchasing a second one as a spare! It's that good!Greg
Great sounding amp other than the rattling tubes. I realize I could re tube and get rid of that for a bit but can't rationalize re tubing a new amp. Also the standing hum seemed much louder than any other amp I own. I tried recording with it and between the tube rattle and hum the track was ditched. I assume that's why it was an open box sale. I called customer service and they couldn't tell me Why it was returned. That's no good. There should be a way to track those issues Otherwise you just keep selling folks thsame lemon.Hambone612
I bought this on a 12 month AMS payment plan ive had it 2 days. Its a beast of a combo. I started with everything at noon but the volume. Every setting i tried sounded great. The clean is american sounding but thicker. The drive channel does not sound like a fender n if you turn up your mids you can get a super fat british tone. Its very pretty you know it kinda looks like money. This is its own amp but it can lean alot of different tonal direction. Its gott plaenty of usable gain to get that 80s/90s hard rock to grunge sound. My only struggle with this amp is its LOUD i had thought about a power soak but the internal speaker cord is too short. Currently i have a cotic compressor in the loop so i can get appartmen volumes. Its working well. I recomend it if your looking for a portable giggable combo that can get good fat tones. I still havent had it past 4 n my ears are ringing

You can play it without any problem with 1×12 even at an apartment~!! Hell… I dare to say I would be able to run it with my 2×12 v30 at apartment @ 0.1W I am using it currently @1W/full power with 2×12 v30 and it works beautifully. The amp is rather bright and harsh so it's nice to tame it with some darker cab and speaker/s. My Mesa type 2×12 brought it to normality quite well. I am really glad that Marshall offers this amp for this price. The price of a modeller/multieffect you can have a real full valve amp~!! + definitely scratch the itch of having a real valve amp experience + 0 latency = the notes are sticky to your fingers, if feels like… I don't know… the sound just pops right out from the underneath of your fingers. The playing is very effortless. You do not have to overcompensate with your pick attack or whatever because the dynamics and springiness of playing is just surreal. One of the reasons why playing modellers/pluggins/ is a chore most of the time for me… It just lacks that easiness of transfering what you want to do with the sound. Playing with this amp feels like you are the one with the guitar amp and speaker. No bs in-between. + you can play whatever you want and you don't need anything else really… + I still fight of buying a delay pedal because I don't really need it… I don't really need anything else to be honest… I have all the gain I need, two channels + simplicity… I leave my equalisation @ 12/noon and don't even touch it… I just just volume/gain knobs and that's it = ideal practice tool + sometimes I practice for a few hours straight in high temperatures = +-29* @+-40-60% humidity. Zero problems. + looks amazing + foot switch included, speaker cable as well~!! – I am a fan of Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier Rev. G = fat, muddy, wide, bassy… tone… This ain't it. It's Marshall back to back and unfortunately it will never fill that gap… – eq on red/ultra gain channel doesn't really do much. I mean it does… but you can't really add more bass to it because it is voice that way… It's just Marshall I guess – I wish it didn't have a digital reverb (it could be gone for what I care). It just ruins the all valve vibe to it/ I can only think of Bugera G5 that can detrone this amp from it's glory. This I will find out in July hopefully 🙂 MusicStore, professional as always.
Since I was teenager I always wanted old school Marshall tube amp. And this little guy made a dream come true. Clean channel is lovely a'la JCM800 sound – very bright and articulate (I simply LOVE it). Ultra gain provides a lot of gain and more modern distortion – imho will be enough to play thrash/heavy/power metal. It's not the cheapest in 1W league – but it's worth every penny.
Fantastic little amp. This is the tone I’ve been looking for, at volume levels I can manage in my living room. I’ve got it running through a Marshall 1×12 cab and the sound is amazing, even on the 0.1 setting. Lovely cleans with a rich natural break up on channel one, and wonderful crunch through to screaming distortion on channel two. Pair this baby with a Les Paul and you’re in heaven. I got this as a Christmas gift. I never built an amp before but I do have good solder experience and general electrical knowledge. The amp worked perfectly on the first build. After following all the testing procedures I plugged in and it worked perfectly. I am extremely pleased with the sound quality. I have owned 2 other tube amps and neither sounded this good. It is surprising how low the noise is and how great it sounds. The other interesting thing is the pedals I have sound better in front of this amp versus any amp I have ever used them on. My tube screamer pedal sounds amazing in front of this amp. The gain is all there with less noise and better voicing. I have no idea why that is but I could not be happier.
I recently completed the British 18W head kit from Tube Depot, and can't say enough good things about it! From start to finish, the kit exceeded my expectations. Ordering, shipping, and customer service were top-notch. No issues with components. The instructions and documentation were amazing, worth their weight in gold. The end result was an amplifier that sounds incredible! I incorporated a few of the suggested options- PPIMV, Tremolo HI/LO sw., Tube/SS Rectifier sw., and choke. The sound is amazing, I'm finding it very difficult turning the amp off- once I start playing through the amp I don't want to stop. I ordered this kit with a mod to use KT 66 power tubes. The changes were easy to make and it sounds fantastic. The classic JTM 45 tone at a manageable volume level with the master volume control. Just to test it out I've used a power soak and the tone is exactly the same using the master volume. A couple of real nice features of the design are the negative feedback switch and the ability to switch between solid state and tube ratification (the tube sounds better to my ears). I bought this amp based on the good print reviews and the way it sounded in you Tube reviews. I did a lot of homework and finally placed my order. I was excited when it showed up at my house and plugged my Jay Turser Les Paul copy right in. Boy, is this thing dark! I turned all the tone controls to 10. I changed the strings. I removed the covers from my pickups- that just made it dark and tinny. After three days I decided that I had to either send it back or make some changes. I took the speaker from a Squier 15 amp and installed it in the Bugera. Right away there was more life and clarity to the sound, though it still sounded tinny (because it's a speaker from a Squier 15), but it was some progress. Next I pulled tubes from a circa 1959 Curtis-Mathes console stereo and swapped them into the Bugera. Now we were getting somewhere- the overtones, the reason we use tubes, were now present and accounted for. The same console is full of Oxford speakers, which are a Jensen knockoff and well respected. I took an 8" from that and installed it in the V5. OH YEAH! Now this is a great little amp. The clean tones are super sweet, clear, full and bell-like with tons of sustain. The overdrive has a huge range of grit, and the reverb is better than any other amp I've had. So after installing a set of +/- 60 year old tubes and speaker, it sounds great. But out-of-the-box stock, I would have sent it back, no question. If you have a too-bright guitar or are willing to make upgrades, this amp is a super value. My one complaint about build quality is that the wattage selector switch is extremely touchy- it goes from .1 to 5 watts and has to be fiddled with to get it to stay on the 1 watt setting.Farmhand
This week I bought a duellist overdrive pedal from king of Tone, the Revival Drive from Origin Effects and this lovely little amp. The two pedals cost nearly £700 between them and the Bugera only £189 but my favourite tone comes from the Bugera itself largely because the built in attenuator allows you to really cook the single valves at pre amp and power amp stage without annoying the neighbours. This makes the Bugera a lot of fun. It’s tone control could be improved to raise the brightness but for the price I’m not complaining. This is definitely more of a British than an American tweed sound. And the addition of pedals – which it takes well – can potentially increase the brightness. The onboard 8 inch speaker is fine for practice and the amp is just about portable enough to use for travel. The speaker jack is accessible on the back panel, so it can be swapped easily for a guitar cabinet if you wanted to gig this machine or open up the sound (it’s 5 watts can still be loud enough for small venues). If, like me, you have been dependent on fender amps for home playing and you want a good alternative ‘Marshall’ sound at bedroom levels, then look no further!
Perfect at home tube amp. I generally use 1 watt mode. Great tone whether clean or breakup. Loves my telecaster and Boss BD-2 into it, and takes pedals great in general. Couldn’t get over how nice it looked when I unboxed mine, either. Beautiful looking amp on top of sounding great. Really an incredible value. I recently bought a Fender Blues Jr NOS and was quite happy, good natural clean and grind. Takes both pedals and my X3 Live outboard gear very well, but I was hoping for an amp that had the clean and the hard rock tones without needing to schlep a distortion pedal or my X3 Live. I bought an HT-5R used at MF's sister company hoping it would meet my needs. First, the HT-5R can be very loud. It also has a decent clean, pure for my EMG 60 and a nice blues edge with my EMG 85. The test of any amp is how it handles the hard rock or metal tones tho and the HT-5R falls sort of short… until you add the required Decimator G String Noise Reduction and BBE Sonic Max thru the effects loop. Those two outboards save this amp without running pedalboard effects. Just know, the BBE and G String are not needed nor are they compatible with the X3 Live, the thing buzzes like crazy when I run the X3L thru it with the BBE and G String. The X3 Live sounds great without them tho. I don't have any other modeling/multi-effects systems so I do not know if the Boss ME-70 or similar items are compatible with the BBE or Decimator thru the HT-5R effects loop. I also tried hooking up my Haze 112 straight cab as an external along with the internal speaker, sounds very fine. These two brands of speakers probably play better together than the two companies. Bottom line… I can run this amp without a distortion pedal on the clean channel unless I want crunch (I do). The OD channel doesn't need a distortion pedal but only sounds real when I use BBE and Decimator. I can also use the X3 Live. Both setups can produce awesome results. By itself? Not so much… but I'm still keeping mine for grab and go and gigs with small stages, but I'm keeping my Fender Blues Jr NOS too for when I'm willing to bring my pedal board or X3 Live along.Travisty7
Kind of puzzled by the negative reviews of this bad boy but to each his (or her) own I guess. The Blackstar HT-5R to me is a fantastic little amp. It is solidly built and delivers tube warmth & punch that digital amps can't touch. It's simple layout allows for a versatile array of quality tones without slamming the user with option overload. There are lot of well-thought out features one doesn't usually find on affordable small tube amps such as the excellent emulated output and an FX loop. The clean channel is very serviceable. It's not a mind-blowing Fendery clean but it is very clear and is very responsive to difference guitars and pickups. If you are a country guy, don't bother. If you like gain, keep reading. The star here is the Overdrive channel. There is lots of gain on tap, plenty for most rockers and classic metallers. The tone is a little more rock than pure metal – the palm mutes are reasonably chunky but you won't get Pantera chug without a boost pedal. This is true for most high gain tube amps though, that's why so many bands and producers rely on Tubescreamers to tighten things up. I get a killer warm tone straight onto the amp at any gain level. After setting the gain anywhere above 5 and flicking on my TS-9 (set to zero gain and a just a slight level boost), this thing turns into a fire-breathing crunch machine! Tasty metal riffs abound. This amp is a little gem. It pretty much covers all angles from Bedroom practice to Studio, Rehearsal and Live Gigging. With many sound setups in venues using monitored sound systems the requirement for loud backline Amps is a thing of the past and gigging with one means basically not being able to play it at any volume above number 2. A small , but powerful amp with both the monitoring capability and the Emulated MIC capability to go straight into a Desk means that you can have the best of both worlds if needed. You can play it on stage a reasonable volume or you can play through the monitoring if needed. The channel switch and Cab / Speaker options mean you can setup the whole for bigger things if you want to carry the Cabs about with the option to plug in extension speakers galore. The Reverb is smooth, Roomy to Arena and the ISF gives you tonal variation that allows great contrast. If you want a negative… well the sockets on the back are all hidden under the edge of the back panel making them hard to find in the Dark and the foot switch cant be dropped into the back of the Amp for storage…but thats about it! small price to pay for a great piece of Kit.daveperrym2

I bought this amp on a wim and I'm glad I did. I wanted a light weight little tube amp to lug around to play small gigs with. I'm old and I don't like to bring out amps that are just too loud and bulky. After swapping out the tubes a couple of times to find what my ears liked, it just perfect. I'm not going to tell anything about how it sounds because that would not mean anything. We all search for a individual sound that is on YOUR head. I will day this. The amp is a great platform to mold into that sound we all are looking. I purchased 2 of the single 12" cabs. O opted to do this instead of the 2 x 12" because I wanted to keep the weight down for moving it around. The 18 watts is plenty loud enough to cut through and be heard. I like the amp so much that I use it for every show. I can play small to large gigs with no worries. When we play bigger events I just run into the board but still use the cabs for monitors. So I can hear my rig. The days of having to lug a full 100 watt stack are not needed anymore. So all in all this a great little amp and it will satisfy most everyone with a little adjusting. I also love that tube replacement is just plug and play. It will tell you if your tubes need replacing and it's self biasing.worldtrdex
Classic Hughes and Kettner tones in a little monster of an amp! Plugged it into a 12 x 2 cabinet and DAMN! this thing is beautiful to listen to. Clean or over driven, this amp is a pleasure to play guitar on. However when overdriven the nuanced variances between different guitars are not well appreciated. The overdrive is more muddy and less nuanced in my opinion. Comparing different strat styles here with different pick-up combinations. Tele sounds different. Chambered SG style sounded the same as other strat style guitars with humbuckers. Parker and Ibanez S series with infiniti 2 pickups sounded distinctly different. Have not played neodymium pickups on it yet but I'm hoping that will clear up some of the mud.arcticwynd

Long time line 6 fan. I’ve owned several of their solid state offerings but this DT 50 to my ears is the best sounding tube amp made. It’s very versatile. Add a line 6 hd 500 or pro x and a Variax standard and there isn’t a sound you can’t get with this rig. I purchased a DT 50 head. Liked it so much I purchased a DT 50 212. The only thing I don’t like about the combo is it’s friggin heavy. I installed high quality removable casters that helped. I think this is the most under rated amp made.Mark Schuster

Very nice little amp with a good sound despite the size. not a ton of tonal variety; but what it does, it does well. switchable output levels from 4 watts to 1/10 of a watt. the tone control doesn't seem to make a ton of difference in the sound, what it does is very subtle. i don't know if that was how they are made or not. i bought the amp new several years ago. i had it open to change the tubes a couple years back and couldn't see anything not attached or anything like that. amp is in very good cosmetic condition with just a little bit of wear in the tolex on the upper rear corners.

To be honest, when I opened the box and saw the actual size of the amp, I thought, "Save the packaging. It's going back." For the money, there's not a lot here. I have a bunch of low wattage, boutique tube amps – Tweed Deluxes, Tremolux, hand wired Princeton's, brown Princeton's, even the Magnatone Panoramic in stereo. I didn't think this Starlite would make the cut. Then I plugged it in. Holy cow! This thing is a blast. Absolutely killer tones. It rips. It cleans up well. It's inspiring. It handled my Strymon Flint (reverb / tremolo) in the front end beautifully. I doubt an overdrive pedal would improve the natural break up on this little dude. I didn't bother. I just used my volume knob on the guitar. If there a more dynamic, low wattage amp that won't rob you of your hearing, I don't know about it. I couldn't stop playing it. For the bedroom / living room guitarist, it would be hard to do better. It doesn't need to be loud to do it's thing. But it does seem to be a robust five watts. For the gigging guitarist, I think if you're mic'ed up with a good mix in the monitor, you'd be more than happy. I'm going to mic it up for rehearsal this week. If that doesn't work, I'm going to try my Boss Tube Amp Expander in to a bigger speaker cab. I'm motivated to use this. But if I can't, this is definitely going to be my go-to recording amp. It's Tweed-y, it's Deluxe-y, it's even kind of Marshall-y in the Bluesbreaker sense. Most of all, it's just fun. They dropped the price on these. Get one while you can!

I have several rehearsals and a few gigs under my belt with the Pano. I feel confident that I now know it well enough to write a review. The first thing I'll say about this amp, and it's true with all the Maggies I've played, the EQ section is more dynamic in its range and curve than your standard Fender variant. You have to spend time with your guitar of choice while twisting the tone controls on this amp to understand. This is a very clean amp. But it's not exactly "clean" in the JC or Twin Reverb category. It's super clear and defined with a hint of grit that goes where your pick attack and playing dynamics want to go. If you hit harder, it responds perfectly – but still maintains its clarity. Sloppy players will be revealed. Clean players will be rewarded. Note and string definition is just stellar. The Pano is also much louder than every other 12-watt amp I own. If you want a ton of clean headroom in a 2×10 stereo format, this is hard to beat. It doesn't break up on its own until you're well in to the upper decibels. Honestly, that tube saturated break up occurs when it's too loud for the folks I play with. A good drive is pedal is essential for playing rock or blues. However, the vibrato is so good, I tend to leave it on more often than not and adjust controls accordingly. It does surprisingly well at adding that extra harmonic distortion that inspires you to play your best. You may be able to leave the drive pedal at home. If you're a classic country player or playing pedal steel style licks, this amp is probably all you need – for pedal steel, it's better than my Twin. (But I'm a student level steel player so buyer beware on that bit of advice.) The reverb and AM / FM vibrato are beyond fantastic. The stereo spread certainly helps. The stereo field isn't huge like running two amps but it's full enough to take notice. If you're in the sweet spot in front of the amp, it sounds "amazing" with the vibrato pulsing. I used quotation marks because I really mean "amazing". It's truly panoramic. Just like a hi-fi system, when you leave the sweet spot, you can't detect the stereo imaging. As a pedal platform, it's a lot of fun. I run a Fulltone Tube Tape Echo in to it at the rehearsal space and wow, pure joy. It's addictive. However, at this price point I would prefer the option of an effects loop but that's not really a thing in the 12-watt world. Ultimately, the Pano is a very different amp, a very good one. I see no resemblance to tweeds or Princeton's as some have mentioned. I see even less resemblance to the Vox or Marshall sound even though it's an EL84 based amp. The Pano is it's own beautiful thing. It truly is a high fidelity experience. Advanced players will be rewarded.
