First off, I am the biggest Van Halen fan you'll ever find and have nothing but respect for the Brown Sound. That said, you won't find it in these strings. They're awful. They're constantly at odds with my Floyd Rose and I've yet to keep them all in tune without the Low E flopping all over the fretboard. And the strings that do stay in tune produce a tinny, whiny sound through the same settings that were cranking out near-Van Halen tone from Ernie Balls. This is my first experience with the EVH equipment line and I must say I'm not impressed. The only connection to Van Halen I see here is that only Eddie himself could make these things sound good.Lee
If and when you find these for a reasonable price BUY THEM!! Since Eddy died anything with his name on it skyrockets in price. I don't play as often as I'd like, but when I do I play hard. These strings are some of very few that stay in tune, don't corrode or flatten out on the fret side. ALL strings should be thoroughly wiped down after use. GHS Fast fret is a great choice, rubbing alcohol followed by mineral oil is another.blue-mike

Guys, these strings are AMAZING! Let me tell you, if you put these strings in after having a different brand in, you will totally feel and hear the difference. It makes your guitar sound great. And here's why. We all know Ernie Ball strings sound great. For me, they've always had the most clarity. Take what I say with a grain of salt, I'm just going by my own experience. D'addarios break on me, DR's sound muddy and have also broken on me, GHS sound good but once again, they've broken on me. You may be thinking "Breaking a string is common for any brand, it happens" That may be true, but I have noticed that ever since I've switched to Ernie Ball, I've never broken a string. Unless I'm doing a setup, cleanup job or something like that, I rarely ever change strings, and I play for at least 2 hours a day. I've had a guitar with the same set of Ernie Ball strings on it for well over a year and still no breaking occurred. Simply put, these rock!

These strings are okay for the price, but I've had several problems with them. 1) This is not a sealed pack, so when I bought it the .010 had rusty patches right out of the pack and maybe the .013 too. They're in individual folded paper sleeves all together in an open-air fold-over plastic sheath. 2) They're NOT for your standard extended-range/long scale 8-string. Short scale guitars only. These fit my 25.5" guitar nicely, but when I tried putting these on my Agile Interceptor 30" scale guitar, they were probably 5"+ too short. Didn't even reach the nut, much less the peg (partly because it's a string-through, tune-o-matic, long scale, and reverse-inline, so lots of extra string is needed. Also, on the paper sleeve, it tells you that it's a 30" taper, which means that the string gets narrow after 30" to fit through the tuning peg. On many extended-rang/long scale guitars, the taper will begin before the nut, which you do NOT want. You want the string to be the same diameter along the entire vibrating length. 3) The tension balance is all out of whack. The gauges are okay on the last 6 strings for 25.5" scale. A little too tight from the .054 down (I can imagine on your typical long-scale 8-string they'd be way too tight), but I drop-tune the low strings to E and A, and the .074 is totally floppy and smacking the frets and the 0.64 could definitely be thicker.The Kev
I wrote a review earlier about these strings, but I have definitely changed my mind. I do have an eight string, and I used these for it and wow…they were not very good. The most obvious thing was the .74 string gets smaller WAY before the tuners, even for my seven string. So playing the first fret feels extremely awkward. Second, palm muting on these things sounds hideously dirty compared my old strings or even the stock strings. I also have to agree that a .54 for the E string is very ridiculous. The only thing I'd recommend these for is softer playing or if you never play chords. Otherwise, get the D'Addario or any other 8-string set.Brian Dice
Ernie Ball completely failed on this one! Ernie Ball is my usual brand of string, but whoever put this set together knows absoultely nothing about string tension or 8 string guitars. 8 string guitars are extended scale instruments from 27-30", so why are they putting a .054 for the E and a .064 on the B? In their 7 string sets they put a .052 or .056 on their low B, and that's for a normal 25.5" scale. Do you see any logic in this? Then they put a .074 on the 8th string. It's actually a good choice for the 8th string tension-wise (if the rest of the strings were balanced), but it has WAY too little tension compared to the low E and B. Compared to the other incredibly heavy strings in the pack it makes no sense. If you want a nice, balanced set look into LaBella Crazy 8's, or just buy a 7 string set and add on the appropriate 8th string.

I really like these strings. They are warm, and give what I believe to be the best tone on my Stratocaster's and Telecaster. I don't really remember when I first started using Pure Nickel strings (of any brand), but I DO know I have never used anything but Pure Nickel since. The strings got a 4 star rating. I purposely omitted 1 star because, I feel they don't last as long as say a Nickel wound D'Addario would…but then again, I have not found a Pure Nickel D'Addario set of strings. So I forfeit the longevity for the tone. I DID just today order some Fender 150M (medium gauge 11's)…which are also Pure Nickel. I would never order 10 sets of strings if I didn't like them. Once I get to play the 11's, I will give a review on that product page. As far as Fender Pure Nickel strings go…you can't go wrong on the tonal quality. Rock on!!!White Dog
For years I've played flatwound strings, but when I bought my new Fender American Professional Jaguar I was taken by how lively and expressive the strings were! I left them on. There was a learning curve, with me having to learn a lighter touch, but the more I played them the more I liked them, I went on the Fender website, clicked on the "Chat with us" button, and asked what set came on the Jaguar. BUY THESE ! I hadn't used Fender strings for 30 years . A friend of mine bought out a music store so to liquidate he sold me all the strings and drum sticks in stock .. there were mostly Fender strings so I started using them . 20 packs of 9's lasted me well over a year . I work at least 3 night a week as a lead guitarists / vocalist . so I use my main Strat a lot . after I ran out of Fender's I used GHS and noticed I was breaking strings .. so I tried the Ernie Ball's .. breaking strings again ! I went to a local music store and bought a pack of Fender's . as an experiment I wasted to see how long before one would break . SIX WEEKS ! .. THEY LASTED 6 WEEKS ! .. Hey you music hounds out there! Give Guitar Center a shot at setting you up with some gear! I also asked if they traded used pedals towards a new pedal and, yes I walked out with a new distortion pedal!! Strings are the lowest around town and in stock. These 3250 nickel plated steel wound fender strings really sound good with the bullet ends (more surface touching the tremolo) and steel is stronger and less likely to break on a large bend and the sound is a little stronger on the pickup I've been playing 30 plus years and tried many string types and this is what I buy!!! I like regular gauge .10-.46 but the choice is yours =JamMan= play till I drop……
The reason I tried these strings (3150R) was because i bought a Telecaster (Baja) in 2007. I read about fret wear being less because it matches the alloy in the frets of new Fender guitars, in comparison to steel strings. Therefore there is the hope it offers less wear and tear on the frets. I had also had problems with the Telecaster 'icepick' sound on the bridge pickup. These strings softened the icepick sound I was getting with steel strings. They last for up to 4-6 months. I think the Tele and nickel string combo is a winner for me. My attitude towards Fender strings changed after this, so I tried the bullets on my Strats. Guess what they were even better with tremelo dives and resistance to detuning. But I thought the pure nickel really affected the sound I got. I like the biting sound from steel strings (GHS Boomers, 10-46) on both a 1970 Stratocaster and a Lace sensor stock equipped 1990 Strat Ultra, so I choose the nickel-plated (3250R) steel strings. Pure joy of sound from both. I had to get a refret on the '70 Strat in 2010, so it was a good move to use these strings to avoid fret wear.

These are not bright strings, the sound is somewhat dull – not so much you can't boost highs and adjust mids to compensate enough for most purposes, but these will never sound great for anything that needs to pop with bright presence. I am forced to keep a 5 string tuned down a whole step for one of the bands I regularly work with and this is the only game in town. You will need to re adjust your bridge because your intonation will change with these strings on and it may be enough to make solos and high passages sound a but wonky. If you have to keep a rigged tuned down, these are what you need but they put an awful strain on the neck if you try to pull them up to standard pitch – use for lower tunings ONLY.Doug
In the interest of full disclosure, I am a DR endorsing artist. But I chose to endorse them because I truly believe they make the best strings I've ever used. At the same time, I realize that you have to have the right strings for the right bass, and your playing style and type of music you play also determine to a large extent which strings are right for you. I've tried almost every string they make, and they're all great, but not all perfect for every situation. These are definitely the right strings for me, though. I currently play a Lakland 55-60 with a maple fretboard. I used to swear by the Marcus Miller Fat Beams. But then DR sent me a set of these DDT's to try, and I was blown away! The MM strings are great, but these are much more to my liking for what I'm doing right now. I play in a modern country band and I never down-tune. But the tension, stability, and sustain of these strings are phenomenal. They also give my jazz bass a hotter output, probably due to the density of the strings. If you like tight, stiffer strings that will sustain for days and sound big and fat, give them a try! I'm giving quality an 9 because the build and overall quality is great, but they didn't last as long as I'd like. Unlike some strings that can lose tone over time, though, these pretty much sounded awesome for about a month (of playing 4 nights/wk) and then all of a sudden just didn't sound good anymore. Personally, I'd prefer it that way, rather than have strings that sound a little worse day after day. But I wish I could have gotten more use out of them. When you find the right string, you have to have it. And these are a great value. And they're cheaper than the Marcus Miller strings that I also loved, so bonus! : )
i've been using these strings for almost 2 years for hard/heavy rock. on a 36" scale 5-string the 135's feel great, and stay nice and tight at Eb or D tunings. at standard E tuning they are extremely tight. i've taken them down to C tuning, which puts the low B all the way down to seriously subterranean G, and that's about where they start to get floppy on a 36" scale bass. i would describe their tone as being loud and punchy, which suits loud, heavy music very well. as for longevity, i'm getting a solid month out of them at 10 hours per week of fairly vigorous playing. i kept the last set on to to see how long they'd go for. after 3 months they're starting to loose temper, and need to be replaced… but that's after a lot of playing.Wesley

Definitely the best strings at the price point lately. They have a thinner or smoother wind than Ernie Ball slinkys or Daddarrio exl and this results in less finger noise and a zingier tone IMO. I'm into clean and classic rock, and I doubt you would like these over the former two names if you were into more modern and metal sounds. It depends on the guitar for me, on my strat I could use just about any strings. My guitars with humbuckers seem more picky, at least to my ears. I prefer these over the other two as far as cheap strings go, and these are often cheaper. Win win. According to a Fender rep, these are what came on the Fender PJ bass I ordered from Musician's Friend. They produce the classic Fender tone I wanted. I eventually replaced them with a set of Fender 7250L (.040, .060, .080, .100) to make it easier to play on the guitar's 9.5" fingerboard radius. I stayed with Fender because of the tone that the 7250M strings produce. The Light's have slightly less oomph on the low end, yet all the tone while the lighter gauge makes for nice melodic work on the high end of things. I got these strings today! I put them on my Epiphone Les Paul guitar all i can tell you is the tone was warm and the notes were so clear and open even with the gain up still wonderful and a joy to play. I fell like a got a new guitar and i was thinking about getting new pickups! Not anymore my guitar has the classis 57's pickups in my guitar that came that way and has the 60's neck as well. Now let talk about the string's playing on the finger broad was so easy it just fell good the never sounded and played like this before. For me i play rock and blue's. my amp i have is a Blackstar HT stage 100 mk2 with a 4×12 cab with vintage 30's. The amp gives me that vintage tone like a good old Marshall. I bought these strings for fun just to see how it would look on my guitar. I expected these strings not to be high quality but, wow, these strings are just HORRIBLE! I strung up my guitar and in less than 15 minutes of moderate playing (I estimate about 30% of) the coating of the unwound strings flaked off onto my guitar. Not only does this look bad but, more importantly, seriously diminishes playability. My fingers then slide over rough, flaking strings. Ouch! Cute idea…terrible execution! Cute idea. Looks nice….(before playing). I strung up my guitar and in less than 15 minutes of moderate playing (I estimate about 30% of) the coating of the unwound strings flaked off onto my guitar. Not only does this look bad but, more importantly, seriously diminishes playability. My fingers then slide over rough, flaking strings. Ouch! Value, with any product, is relative to quality. At $12 a set the value is not good. Even if they were $2 a set it would not be a good value because of the poor quality. I have purchased other string sets for as low as $4 that were much better.
These are excellent strings. I bought them for my son, who loves them. They stay in tune well. He likes their feel, they feel like the Elixir strings he used before. They seem to last well, he's had then on his Schecter about 3 weeks and they feel and look good and hold their tuning well. And did I mention they look really good under black light?Richard

what can i say, i have been using Ernie Ball Slinky's for almost twenty years.and would not think of any other string. they are so flexible, i think i am using regular guitar strings. it doesn't take a Hercules to pull the strings down to the frets. and they always have the sound i am looking for. look, i am going to shoot straight. most musicians are not rich.and struggle until that day(if it ever comes) we get discovered or finally break through. most of us don't. so, if i can get a string that allows me to do what i can with a bass, and sound like the most expensive bass ever made, at a price where i can eat dinner that night,that's a win-win. so whether i am playing for a bunch of my friends, or playing in some major concert venue.i will continue to use Ernie Ball products.david

Nice, lightweight strings with a good feel and excellent durability. The Slinky series give a great bright sound to the player, which is great for overall sound of the instrument. This lighter gauge I recommend for some of my beginner and/or younger students, especially while developing grip and finger strength. Postage from Artist was of course, super fast. Service is generally excellent, and while I have had some issues with their own brand products in the past, they've always played straight and fairly.

Really great strings. Been using them on my Gibson SG in drop C tuning and I have no complaints. A word of advice when you do get them, stretch them HARD or you'll have tuning instability for a few days until they rest but thats part of playing lower tunings. Great strings all around. I have used these strings for 3 or 4 years now they're really good I chose them because of the size and I found out that they are awesome. Not one ever broke on me as I did expect the 10 to from the speed and pressure I used sometimes. My particular style is metal, the strings work great for that. They are highly pliable. I am a bender and the tuning I think does not go out too much after the stresses I place on the strings. I have used deep standard E standard C standard a also be dropped down tuning no problem with any of the strings at all the sound is crisp and clear it's not a muddy sound and it's not a tinggi sound from the strings like a steel Acoustic sound.Big Mac
These strings work pretty much as advertised. They let you tune absurdly low without sacrificing note clarity or integrity… not perfectly, but reasonably. They also stay in tune remarkably well with little to no breaking-in.Regular DR 10's can handle my guitar tuned down 1 1/2 steps with no problems, but anything beyond that is flub territory and intonation is out by as much as a full half-step. With the DDT 10's, I can go 3 steps down and they still sound tight. If you check with a tuner, the intonation isn't quite right, but the difference is negligible to the naked ear. It's hard to break a DDT string. They are noticeably tougher than your average set of 10's. The feel is quite nice at 1 steps and lower though. They're surprisingly easy on the fingers. You don't have to pick hard to get heavy attack. They just exude brutal tone.Their quality stands true to the DR name. Definitely worth a try if you plan on experimenting with extremely low tunings. I typically play a half step down, sometimes drop C#. Guitar I have set up for that was giving me some occasional open string buzz in drop C#, but I didn't wanna go to a higher gauge because I like to be able to go to E standard once in a blue. I recently had some repair work done on my 79 Peavey T-60 and the tech recommended these. I haven't played my T in years, and back when I did, it was in my garage band where we cranked out a lot of Zeppelin and Hendrix stuff. The T-60 offers coil splitting via the tone knobs. At 10, you get single coil. Below that, you get a variety of full humbucker tones. It has a 25.5 inch scale. It's a perfect cross between a classic Fender Strat and a Gibson Les Paul, with some Telecaster tossed in on the neck pickup. I'm finding this time around with the T that I'm really enjoying the clean tones I'm getting, playing through a Fender Princeton Reverb Reissue, as well as playing through an overdrive pedal (to get some dirt without scaring the dogs out of the room). I'm never sure with strings how much is sales talk and how much is legit technical merit, but I am finding I am enjoying the feel and the variety of tones I'm getting – single coil or bucker – from myT with these strings. I've got about six hours play wear on them so far, and there is no visible discoloration so I'm thinking they should last as long as they claim, to justify the price, which is the only reason I don't give them 5 stars. Have almost every string. Have a new Eastman t486, 335 clone, that has not sounded right with other strings. Latest we're Tite Fit 10s but they were muddy on this git. The Gibson Vintage 10s are full, smooth with great overtones. Very musical strings. They also allowed me to lower the action to spec without buzzing. I have tried many other strings but have found none that can equal these Gibson reissue pure nickel. I have tried D'Addario, Ernie Ball, and others but these are the best sounding strings i have ever used hands down! I LOVE these strings. I have about 5 sets of Ernie Ball regulars in my guitar case but they will remain there and never get on my guitar. Why? These Gibson's are SUPERIOR and literally sound 5 times better than any other string in my opinion. I can't get over how good they sound. I know I am over the top here but to me they are that good. They have a deeper full beautiful tone and they stay in tune better and they just make my guitar sound so good. I am hooked on these strings. I just ordered 4 sets as I am scared as hell that they will discontinue them for some reason. (notice they are REISSUE). I had been using 0.13 baritone strings on a 25.5 scale Ibanez 6 string and never could get it to intonate well if I went lower than b standard. With these strings I can get it to Ab standard or Drop F# while still maintaining an almost perfect intonation. Plain steel 3rd isn't my Forte, but it works.Barry Baritone
I got these strings hoping to tune to Dropped-C or Dropped-C#. They get tight at Dropped-B. If you plan on using them for Dropped-A (anything lower than that is just ridiculous), Dropped-Ab, or Dropped-B, these are good for that. The lowest string tends to sharpen when played on the frets higher than the 7th though. Otherwise they're fine, and it takes FOREVER for any of the strings to die. I've had them for 4 months and they still play just as well as they did when I got them. The sound is great… just get them if you plan to tune really REALLY low.
these sound incredible at the B and A range. Particularly A because they are so thick. I dont play in F but they still hold tune and tension amazingly. They sound sharp and are very lively strings. Im going to try the 10-60 next week. the 65 gauge is a little to big for versatility. I plan on buying a third guitar and that will have these strings designated to it.Reza

I Love Rhythm and blues, jazz and swing. But I also like folk music and great C&W riff lines. To be honest, I have only been using these strings for about three weeks but I like them so much that I plan to use them on most of my instruments. I have a used 2005 hollowbody Cort Yorktown. I tried D'Addario ECG23 (10-48 "chromes" flatwounds). They were nice, but for this guitar, they were too bright, at least on the treble strings. I put on these DR flatwounds (11-48) and immediately heard the difference. The tone was mellower, including (especially!) on the treble strings. Don't ask me why. After all, the high E is just .001 inch heavier, but the consistent softened jazz sound was there, from low end to high end. Guitars differ in variables (woods, pickups, etc), so all I can say is that for my guitar (laminate maple back and sides, laminate spruce top and original humbuckers), DR 11-48 flatwounds did the trick. Will stick with these from now on. (By the way, both brands have a wound 3rd string, but DR's is 22 instead of 20. Go figure!) At one point, I was even thinking of replacing the neck pickup. I've used probably every kind of stings out there and always came back to these. And not just any les paul strings, the signatures. They are extra light on the treble end for bending and thicker on the bass side for more volume. Les picked these himself and they will make any cheap guitar sound good. They are so smooth you will be amazed. Many strings I play with feel like sandpaper compared to these. And the best part is they come vacuum sealed so they have an indefinate shelf life, so stock up! Red silk stockings? Not the wrong review, stay here. These strings have a wound ball end dressed in red silk, just for show? NO they help anchor the string, they help to prevent slippage of the windings and they look fantastic. These strings are not cheap but you do get what you pay for. They sound great and have a high degree of corrosion resistance – I have never broken one. Apart from my Strats and my Tele I use these strings on all other guitars. If you have a guitar costing hundreds if not thousands of pounds why would you put cheap strings on it? They are getting very rare so buy a set now and try them.cerieds1957

(Guitar there were placed on is a Tom Murphy Painted and Aged Gibson Custom Shop 1959 Les Paul Standard w/ Brazilian Fretboard) Back in the day, Ernie Ball strings weren't packaged well; they weren't even sealed. If you haven't tried them since their packaging was reinvented, they're definitely worth a look now. Tried D'Addario pure nickel strings, found the wound three to be too low output. I swear the core wire looked like it belonged in acoustic strings. Maybe I got a factory defect, who knows. Gibson strings sound great initially but the 'G' starts to sound dead after a week and the wound strings sound dead and filthy in three weeks. These on the other hand sound marvelous. They sound great out of the package, stay balanced, and sound good for longer than I thought possible.MidnightRiderInTX
I have recently come back to playing the guitar, Sax is my primary instrument but I have had my Gibson RD Standard since 1978. I have since increased my heard of guitars to 10 electric guitars and 3 bass guitars. I have come to favor the Ernie Ball lights and super lights on almost all my guitars. I play the 9's on all of my Stratocaster copies and the super lights on the 3/4 size guitars. I love the feel as far as tone, intonation, flexibility ease of bends and how the strings hold up as a whole. I would definitely recommend to a friend or buy this produce again.Antonio
I have been using the Power Slinkys (11s) for a few years now. I had switched from another brand because the Slinkys made my Strat sound more Straty. After watching a few videos on YouTube about string gauge, I thought I would buy the Regular Slinkys (10s) and see what difference that would make. When I got online to buy I saw that Guitar Center had a sale on 12 packs and since there is a pandemic, I thought it prudent to hoard strings. My logic was that while I may run out of TP, I would never run out of strings for my guitars. Long story short, you cannot go wrong with the tone of 10s. I do like them better than the 11s. They are much clearer in the low end and you get more definition. I have to do less EQing when recording and they just seem to pop better in a mix. The only downside is that they are taking me time to get used to, I play very heavy handed and these are much easier to bend. But I can already see that I have less hand fatigue.Richard
