These came installed on my new Epiphone J-45 and man do they sing. Nice bass response and they are not tinny sounding, got the just right acoustic sound. They are coated and to me they make it easier to play. As I haven't played them for that long I'll have to see how they hold up. One other reviewer gave them 3 stars but if you read the review, he was complaining about the shipping time and even said he hadn't tried them. I find it hard to believe that it was AMS's fault for the delay, they always ship super fast. I've tried just about every string on the market over the last 20 years. For years, I swore by Martin Phosphor Bronze Custom Lights. My primary guitars were an older sunburst Taylor 210ce (ES1), a Boulder Creek A/E, an Ibanez Jumbo w/ Fishman Sonicore pup and a Martin LXME. I was very happy with the Martin strings, but then I bought a Taylor 214ce (ES2) that came with these Elixir HD strings. I had tried Elixirs a long time ago, thought the sounded "good, but never great." I dig that "new string" brightness for performance and the Elixirs just sounded "pretty decent", but were "pretty decent" for a long time. That is not the case with these new HD Elixirs. They're bright and articulate. I've switched to Elixir HD's on all of my acoustics (except the Martin LXME, still better with Martins). I wouldn't usually bother with reviewing strings, but the other guitarist mentioned my strings were starting to sound a little dead. I knew the Elixirs had been on there for a LONG time, so I logged into my MF account to see when I ordered them. It had been slightly over a year! I'd put over a hundred hours on these strings! I used to restring 2-5 guitars per month…11 guitars, 5 of which are used regularly. If a pack of Martin's lasted for a month, I thought that was great. Technology has improved! Elixir HD's are that new $#!+ and I am a convert!DayGloYellO
I find them great. They hold their tone a long time – And I mean for around three months & sometimes longer. Of course, strings can sound a bit ordinary if you don't tune properly. They also hold their tuning well. I don't find that they suffer from corrosion, even though I live in a very corrosive area on the coast. But of course I play probably every day and usually give them a quick wipe down before returning guitar to it's case, especially while they are new. Not so much after 3 or 4 weeks old. I mostly use them on a Taylor 312ce. I plan to try them on a Yamaha I use for slide too.Brendon
On the back of a promotional appearance in my facebook I bought 2 sets of these strings and so far, I'm pretty impressed. As all acoustic guitar players realise, their instrument can sound wildly different just with different strings on it. So, first impressions was a much fuller and better defined mid range than competing brands. Its in this area that normal bronze strings usually fade quickest and I'm happy to say after many sessions that these phospher bronze strings are holding up well. That aside, the biggest plus is the top end. Does better definition, more volume with less marginal string/fret interferance sound good to you? Well, this is the forte of these strings. My favourite thing is bluegrass picking and these strings fit that bill well. Cutting through Banjo and Mandolin playing volumes is no easy task and I'm happy to say the Elixer HD lite does that very well. Though slightly larger on the top end, they retain that light gauge 'feel' that encourages greater experimentation with a lot less hand cramp that is common with thicker gauges. Overall I'd give these strings 9.5/10 with the .5 mark down only for excessively bright sound that seems to be inherent in Elixer strings anyway on my Maton CW225. If you have a very woody sounding instrument I'm sure these strings will sound especially good. Well done Elixer a really great string.Colin

But when i saw they had round core available i ordered a set of 6 string strings. They were so good ,i asked about a 12 string set. They dont offer them as of yet, but rep. said they could make me up a set. i askedfor 10- 48,s round core monels, …What a great set of strings. My guild F 412 has always been a stunner tone wise with monel strings. But the round core monels enhanced that 5 x,s .. I put these on my Gibson J-55 and man what a difference over the phosphor bronze that came stock. I have yet to put them on my '29/'31 L3 or Custom Shop martin 0018, but I really adore the sound on my J-55. The J-55 has an Adirondack top, mahogany back/sides and is essentially a Gibson version of a Martin D-18 without the super boomy low end. I love these strings and they really bring out the natural woody tone of the guitar, which is how it should be in my opinion. After using these I really like the sound, and in a weird way I'm closer to that guitar than I ever was before, the phosphor bronze that were on the guitar were just too bright and metallic, I prefer the natural earthy tones. I put this guitar in different tunings and these strings really open it up there and in standard tuning as well. I can't wait to put these on my Martin 000, I just got it so the strings on it are fresh but they're 80/20s and I really don't like them. You can't go wrong with these strings. I'm going to be using them on my acoustics forever. Just vintage, natural, woody earthy tones and I couldn't be happier!Antonio

Loudest, longest lasting strings Best phosphor bronze I have played. I like elixirs, but these are are louder and have a fuller sound. Definitely the longest lasting strings I have ever put on a guitar. I normally break a string after about six weeks, but I just changed a set of these after six months without a string breaking. If these don't sound right to you, you either don't like phosphor bronze, or you didn't read the directions on the packet and you deadened the strings by not crimping before cutting the string.
Usually I play coated strings to make them last longer since I teach a lot. However, I needed to stop compromising my sound and my student had an extra pack he insisted I try. Now, I am not usually one to write a review – but this is a great and relatively inexpensive way to improve your sound. Have not tried round core strings before, though I do like DR Tite-fit for electric. But on an acoustic, they really add a lot and the round feels so much more flexible, playing 12's feels almost like 11's but gives you a thundering volume. I've been through 2 sets in what a coated string would normally take in 2 sets, so I am saying it is definitely worth checking out and not bothering with coated strings!!! Finally!!! I was excited to try out the Blue Steel acoustic guitar strings. I got them in the mail and strung up my guitar with much anticipation. They were good at first, but after only about 20 minutes, my hands smelled like cheap metal, and the tone had already dulled. These strings made my high quality guitar sound like a tinny, cheap First Act Guitar. I would not recommend these strings to anyone. However, I would highly recommended Elixer nanowebs or polywebs. They are a far superior string. They are worth the extra price and will make any guitar sound great.Paul B.
Played guitar for 9 years. Have always picked and fretted with excessive force. My hands sweat and ruin strings. I've tried many strings, Elixrs were the best but too expensive, DR, D'addario, Ernie Ball, RotoSound….nothing felt like home. Somebody told me about these strings, I bought two packs of 12s and fell in love. Unlike the coated strings (Elixr) these are super-cooled so that the molecules lock together tighter. I've been using these strings for years. I love a wound 3rd string. They last up to a month for me where other brands only lasted a week tops. I just bought a new Les Paul with a Bigsby. It came with 9s on it and the intonation was way off. I had a set of 9s by EB and put them on to see what would happen. I am quite happy with the Stringjoy Acoustic Strings and I'm still deciding which ones are my favorite. I recently put on the Foxwood and am now needing to record an "original guitar only song" with it on a direct track and a high end microphone track. Then I will do the same with the Naturals and also the Brights. At least I can then do a comparison but my suspicion is the I might prefer different strings for various purposes. Love these strings. I’ve had them on my Ibanez AC240 for just a couple weeks but I’m blown away! They started unremarkable (in the best sense of course) but have opened up to a nice, full, vibrant sound. They don’t feel coated, but they don’t feel fully natural either which I love. I bought both coated and uncoated versions of the Stringjoy acoustic strings in regular medium light. I now have these on 3 different guitars and plan on installing on 2 more. Have to say I don’t know how you do it but the tension on these strings seems different than anything else I’ve ever used. They just seem “comfortable†and sound fantastic. They’re pricey but worth it. Only con I can think of is they’re a bit noisy when sliding but I’m sure I’ll get used to that.David M

The Martin Retro Monel Bluegrass string made my inexpensive student model guitar sound like a much higher end instrument. I have been reading about pure nickel strings and I've wanted to give them a try. The Martin Retro reviews were good and if Tony Rice likes them and uses them, they must have something positive to offer. I've only had them on my dread (solid mahogany b/s and Adi top) for a couple of weeks…but I love them. I hear the tone of the guitars wood. Not too bright but also not too dark or muddy. Very mellow. Urban legend has it that they get better with age. We'll see. But they sounded good new and they guitar sounds great after two weeks. Too early to tell or comment on how long they stay this way. I will be buying more and use them again. Time to try them out on an OM.B

Bought these Black coated strings last week and put them on a couple of days ago. Other reviews said they were dull and were weak. All I can say is they are very bright. I did not have any break while stringing and I have played my guitar hard for three days with no breaking. I can see that the coating may come off in the future. I have used the Black tape bass strings in the past and thought they would be similar. The coating seems far different which results in the strings being very bright. I would say as bright as any string I have ever played. The bass strings have a lower sound and the covering seems more rubbery. I am very happy with these strings I hope they last a very long time and don't break because being colored you can't just change one string. Also I only had to tune twice before the strings seated and stayed in tune. Must have something to do with the coating because I have never had strings settle that quick…Tiny Tim
I play nylon flat wounds wanted to give these a try. you do still feel the steel strings underneath the coating can't play them as long as I do actual nylons without feeling it in my fingers. only had them a short while and still getting use to how they play. I play them on a custom hand carved 5 string frettless Bass with a warmouth custom neck, they sound great so far not sure how long they will last.John
I've been playing bass with various church worship teams for more than 22 years now. I started using the Black Beauties sometime around 8 or nine years ago on my two electric bass guitars (one 4-, one 5-string). I love the low-key appearance, tone, quality, and how long they last. I bought these strings today because my local store was sold out of my usual Elixir brand. I just put them on my old Gibson acoustic, and all of the ball ends are color-coded wrong, and the strings are turning my fingers black after 20 minutes of playing. They sound OK, but really? I always get this brand of strings. They are the best! The strings are color coded for easy restringing. I usually purchase the ultra light bluegrass style and was happy to see that these are the same top notch quality. The ultra lights are a must if you want easy on the fingers. My son in law has owned a 000-15 for around 10 years. I've played it over that time quite a bit and have enjoyed the mid focused sound that the 000 Martin is known for. Well, last night he handed it to me with these light retro strings installed; it's like a different guitar. Full spectrum sound and just a sweetness it never had before. I concur with other reviewers that the Martin Retros bring out the True Tone of the wood. Can't speak for rosewood (yet), but for Mahogany Parlors this is your ticket to special.Tuneboy2000
I've been through about every brand of strings trying to find the *right* ones for my Martin OM-28V and OM-18C. Retros are the deal. You can really finesse the tones out of the guitars with these strings. They've got a huge dynamic range but it's controllable at the same time. Other brands of strings seem to just over drive my small bodied guitars and playing too aggressively just produces a lot of jumbled booming sound. The Retros let you play loud or soft and the tones are clear on either end. As already mentioned they're very easy on the fingers and note articulation is amazing, hammer-ons and pull-offs that were once a struggle just happen.Joe
The Martin retros are one of my favorite strings, but monel/nickel strings have a particular tone and feel to them. If that's what you're after then there's almost no substitute, but if you're expecting the sound of bronze you'll be very disappointed. Monel has a darker tone to it that will give your guitar an overall "woodier" sound, i.e. you will hear less metallic timbre and less of the type of overtones you get from bronze. Due to the properties of the metal, these strings also tune to standard at a lower tension than bronze so they will have a bit of a softer, looser feel to them. I use these on my all-mahogany Martin 00-15M. I play the guitar in open or dropped tunings a lot and I find the monel tone compliments the guitar well. It's also a long scale guitar so the lower tension is nice for comfort over long play sessions. I now exclusively use the Martin Retros on this guitar but still prefer PB on my other ones. Again, they are a niche string, but if monel is what you want, then the Martin Retros are the way to go.Drew

I was hoping to remove some of the ringing I hear from D'Addario strings. Didn't work. I down tune one whole step so that I can use arrangements for tenors and still sing them. Went to heavy strings but they are too hard on my fingers and they still ring. When I tune up to concert pitch, the problem goes away. I wanted to experiment & give these Retro strings a try. I installed these on my '87 Martin HD2832 Shenandoah with V neck (super comfy) which has a warm tone, getting better with age. I was not aware that these Retro strings were all nickel so I love how they bring out the nickel hardware on the head stock (see attached pic). Comparing these Retro strings to the med gauge 80/20 bronze Martin Marquis that I usually play, these Retro strings are just as warm and comfy, especially when finger picking. If bass is at 'noon', so is the brightness, even throughout. (When comparing to another brand, these Retros sound and feel just as great as the med gauge bronze Ernie Ball Earthwoods that I occasionally play.) I've been playing bronze strings for so long that I'd have to hear the nickle and bronze played back to back in order to hear a difference, if any. These Retros have a nice punch when strumming and leads are rich & full. I have no doubt they'll last just as long as the Martin Marquis. Looks like I've found another set of Martin strings that I'll play for awhile…I believe Martin strings play better as they get older.John564Holloway
If you, like me, find all that brightness, zingyness and abundance of harmonics of modern bronze or phosphor bronze strings just a little too tiresome the Martin Retro's will do the trick. Like it says on the tin, these will help bring out the tone of your guitar more instead of the sound of your strings. The slightly reduced string tension makes even a .013 set play quite comfortably. If it's good enough for Tony Rice it's good enough for me!

The best acoustic strings for the buck! I have tried many many brands,but these are by far the most consistent tone reliabe, stay-in-tune phosphor-bronze sets I've used. My go to set for the past 15 years, presently using them exclusively on my prized Collings D3. Contrary to some other reviews, I think the box travels well and does not pose any sort of problems when removing the strings. I keep the strings dry in a gig bag or work box to avoid shelf life issues. High quality strings in a box that travels well and keeps me playing for months on end? Perfect. I have been using these strings in this box for about four years now, and I have never been let down. They were already my favorite strings. Excellent playability and longevity. Excellent value.
