Haven't played then a ton yet but if your looking for clarity and warmth these are what you want i did change the pots to 500k with the solderless kit from mojotone holy cow what a pita to get those wires in the green pinch block! I can solder and wish i would have gone that route but i figure it would be faster to go with the prewired ones. Overall very satisfied with them looked at others but liked the fact that these were made with adjustable pole screws which gives you a little more options.

This is a fantastic pickup; I've played countless DiMarzios, EMGs, and Gibsons, and this is one of my favorites. Maybe even favorite. It can do the soaring leads or the crunching lows and cuts through the mix without being muddy or tinny. Like I said in the title, I'm not even a John Petrucci / Dream Theater fan, and I don't really down tune very often. If I get really crazy, I go a half step down or drop-D. So this really is a versatile pickup, maybe even more than DiMarzio realizes. If you love playing lead guitar, you should definitely check out what this thing can do.5467890
For me D Sonic is the third best pickup made by DiMarzio after Double Whammy and MegaDrive . The sound is rich and powerful. I tried it with normal tuning ,strings 9-42 with blade installed toward neck. At first note you can got feeling that is to much highs and is too bass but eq correction did a trick. Single note or heavy riffs sound very clean. Basswood body and rosewood finger board seems pair perfect with this pickup. Split mode in my opinion is not a good idea. Sound is thin and highs taking over . It may be my amp or some stomp box but tried it directly connected to amp with same effect. In full mode this pickup sound fantastic. Also using parametric eq ( I'm using WDM parametric eq) you will be able get really nice sound. I would recommend this pups . Is worthy of time and money .darmar1
I decided to get this pickup for the bridge position of my PRS Singlecut along with an Air Norton in the neck (yes, I'm a Petrucci tone fan) and this pickup absolutely KILLS. I currently have it installed bar towards the neck, and the tone is just as DiMarzio described it – thick, fat, and heavy. Harmonics of all kind are insane (better than on the Evolutions, by far) It's also wired for coil tap, and the rail piece gives the split a sharp, snappy tone, very precise and cutting. I agree with the person who said that the Steve's Special is better for standard tuning – if you play strictly standard this will sound good, but not like the SS will. If you tune low and want a ballsy humbucker (without going EMG active), or like the JP tone on Train of Thought or Systematic Chaos, check into this pickup. You won't be disappointed.Benson

I was really surprised at how good this pu sounds. It nails that late forties early fifties jazz and blues sound. Think Tiny Grimes, Bill Jennings and Pat Hare. This pu is on a loar arch top close to the bridge position and it is a great lead pickup. I use adhesive putty to position the pu. Just fitted this zakk wylde set into my Les Paul. Easy to fit as everything was plug in with no soldering required. Took 2 hours from start to finish. The sound is amazing with no hiss or hum..which is one of the amazing features of active pickups. High clear punching lead with plenty of tone & the ryhtmn is tight and controlled even with screaming amounts of distortion and high amp volume. Would recommend even if your not a zakk fan or into metal…these cover a wide genre of styles. The kit came with long shaft pots which are a must for gibson Les Paul but buy the standard set if you have a thinner guitar like a SG type.imp_uk
I've been a passive humbucker user for a while and decided to go a different route with my Gibson Les Paul…I followed the tutorial installation video on the EMG website and viola!! Easy installation. I've played a lot of different Strats over the years and while they all had "that Strat sound" to varying degrees, the Fat '50s achieve seem to be the most authentic. By adding a treble bleed and turning down the volume a bit, I can get those classic chimey tones from the 50s and with the volume all the way up, I can get the bigger sounds from the 60s. The cleans are sparkling, but they sound great running through higher gain amps as well. Compared to pickups like the Texas Specials, these are not harsh to my ears, even in the bridge position. The Fender Mexican made 2017 Stratocaster is a nice guitar and as a standard out of the box guitar is good. One easy way to upgrade the sound is by installing the Fender Custom Shop Fat 50's pickup set. I measured the ones on a custom shop 59 before purchase to be sure of string alignment. I purchased a set and fitted them in about half an hour, fortunately my Mex ST had an Oak type 5 way and full size pots so no more upgrade work needed there. I did change the pot knobs and switch knob to white to match the new pickup covers. I installed a new set of strings, the pickups were test adjusted and sound great, a nice full sound, the front one is very rounded and clear, the middle is a classic sound and the back nice and strong. I was after a Shadows style of sound and these pickups did not disappoint. They give a clear sound and the right sound if you are looking for pure vintage tone.matt66red
I waited 5 months to write this review, I'll try to be unbiased. I replaced the stock ceramic pickups from a Fender Standard MIM. It's my first change of pickups ever, and the first time I play a guitar that sounds so classic, so I can not tell about the difference with a higher end model of Strat or a vintage one, but here goes my opinion: This pickups totally rock, well they don't only do rock, they play everything you want to hear from a instrument called "guitar", that means, 6 strings thru a wood body, they deliver the classic and just necessary electric guitar experience. No gimmicks, just the real thing, classic clean sound, lots of harmonics, dynamic sound, and driven sound wonderful, because they can be strong too, classic surf rock sound here. Took me a couple of days to adjust the proper height, the Alnico V magnets are strong so you have to be delicate to find the right spot for the three PUs, but once you are there, they are marvellous. The three pickups are pretty much the same, states the box, but the three positions are there, and the case with the medium pickup is a great surprise, it sounds very nice, very "middy" usable position, sounds as a custom medium pickup. Despite seeing the one-star review on this item, I decided to try it. Big mistake. When plugging in the cord to power up the pickup, the light would come on when the cord was half-way in and then turn back off when the cord was fully in. So I returned it for another one, figuring I couldn't get two that were faulty, right? Wrong. Big mistake. The second unit did the exact same thing. Basically, this thing is junk in a box. I've had my Taylor 614CE Grand Auditorium with the Taylor Expression pickup in it for almost 14 years now and never was pleased with the EQ options with the pickup. Solo/acoustic, it was fine because it had a nice "warmth" about it and made my sound more "full," but performing with my band and/or other musicians, it would "muddy" up the sound and would never "cut through" like I wanted it to. I tried various pedals and other EQ'ing options, but nothing every worked to get the sound like I wanted it to. Another problem I had was it had ZERO percussive capabilities for my looping shows. A fellow musician recommended the Fishman Matrix Infinity, and after weeks of researching various pickups, I decided to go with it and can't be more happier! I can get a "kick drum" sound out of my acoustic now, if needed, and the blending option allows me to get various effects/sounds I never had an option to get out of my old system. I would HIGHLY recommend this pickup for any guitar!

I bought this humbucker to replace a Seymour Duncan SH-5 Custom that was installed years ago on my Epiphone Korina Explorer (Korean, 90s model). I did this because the other mentioned is a pickup that scoops the mids; and I noticed that when playing in my band, I was constantly competing for the same sound frequencies as our bass player. So when I changed to this pickup (which does the opposite of scooping the mids, but instead boosts them) the guitar tone cuts through the mix muuuuch easier. This allowed me to even be able to reduce the volume of my guitar which was loud as hell before and hence sounded annoying even to me. In sum, this pickup is a warm, midrange sounding hot pickup that will allow you to actually be heard in the mix.
Sounds amazing. You've heard this pickup your entire life on countless tracks. The perfect hard rock, hot pickup. Mine measured 14.26 and I'm very happy with that. Similar in sound to the JB but slightly less midrange focus and a bit more treble. Very nice. The only issue and the reason it gets 4 starts for me is the crazy thin wiring which makes it extremely difficult to strip. Possibly 24 AWG or even thinner. Good luck with that as it will take multiple tries before you get a good clean strip. Still a great sounding pickup if you want the hard stuff!John

So, I decided to replace the pickups in my 2019 Tobacco 50’s Les Paul Standard. I really liked the pickups in the guitar.. but I noticed that the burstbucker in the bridge had way less output. I thought about moving the neck to the bridge, but I didn’t like the idea of having a weaker neck pickup. So, I did some research that led me to these. Also, I wanted to dabble with unpotted pickups. I’m very happy with these pickups. They have a snarl to them, and a real openess to them. BUT, to be completely honest, they’re not far from what the stock pickups sound like. I noticed the burstbuckers were potted, but very slightly. In the end it resolved my output issue, and they sound slightly better than the burstbuckers, I highly recommend these if you’re into PAF tones. They definitely have that articulation and grittiness the originals had. They are awesome!

i stay with an 8k at the bridge position. split and/or dual coil use, sounds great in each mode. easy to install, comes with mounting screws. leads come soldered for dual coil operation, add a grounding lead to a push-pull pot for single/dual coil use. single coil mode has more output than stock strat bridge pu, closer to a telecaster bridge pu, and fits my playing styles more universally. the 14k-16k version may be too hot for what i like. i either sc or dc mode, this 8k balances very well with gibson-style pu's in the neck position.deemilieu-6

I got this to replace the single coil in my USAF Schecter telecaster look alike in the neck position. after i changed the humbucker in the bridge position to a dimarzio dp 101 the neck single coil lost all signal depth to a point that it sounded like ray romano with a cold. so i put this baby in and i had NO IDEA what i was missing. the depth is amazing and best of all its loud enough to keep up with my dp101. the only thing i don't really like is the s1 does NOT like my TurboRat when it gets really dirty. it does like my Big Muff and any kinda overdrive ya put with it.Pastor of Disaster
