I bought these because my local store was out of Daddario EXP 26 strings that I am using. I was using Elixir Custom Lights before that, but I changed to EXP 26 since the G string of the Elixirs was constantly breaking. Comparing this set of Martin MSP4050s with the coated strings I used previously, I found that the Martin strings were the hardest to play with very high tension (hard to bend) and they were also very painful to slide your finger across. Sound-wise they are really good and warm sounding and they get brighter the harder you pick the strings which feels very responsive. Although I haven't used these for long, the Martins feel more durable than the Elixirs but I am expecting some degradation in sound over time since these are not coated. Due to the extremely low playability which I wouldn't expect from a .011 set I found these to be of little use to me. But if you don't use full note bends or slides a lot then you may benefit from the beautiful sound of the strings.ayf
I have been playing for many years. These strings have been my favorite. As the years went by, my fingers could no longer handle the medium gauge, so I tried a light gauge strings. Those strings would not stay in tune. I was thinking my guitar needed new tuning pegs. But I bought these and installed them on my 70's Gibson look-a-like acoustic guitar. These strings are much better than the strings I used to use. I love how the bottom end pops out a lot more and gives it a lot more foundation and volume. I'm looking forward to trying the naturals soon. I also got a set of custom strings from a friend on my worship team who also uses stringjoy, they sound and feel great on my electric. A few things first: the customer service at Stringjoy? 5 stars, no question. The overall attention to detail (especially with regards to packaging)? 5 stars. The feel/balanced tension of the set? 5 stars. Where they fell short for me was the sound/dynamic range and the overall longevity. I tried them on both of my Martin dreds (D16GT and D18 standard) and I wound up disappointed both times. They sounded ok at first, very bright and crisp as you'd expect, but I found they left something to be desired as far as overall dynamics are concerned, bordering on an almost 'tinny' sound that you might get from lesser sets. I also found that they dulled up and died out very quickly (before you ask, both guitars are kept on their cases with proper humidity control when not in use, and I make a point to wipe down the strings each time before putting them to bed). 3 days of moderate practice and one short gig was all it took for the D18. Off they came. Maybe I just got a 'meh' batch, maybe they're just not for me. In any case, that's my take. Again, everything else about this company is 5 star worthy, so keep that in mind.Jesse B

I was hoping to remove some of the ringing I hear from D'Addario strings. Didn't work. I down tune one whole step so that I can use arrangements for tenors and still sing them. Went to heavy strings but they are too hard on my fingers and they still ring. When I tune up to concert pitch, the problem goes away. I wanted to experiment & give these Retro strings a try. I installed these on my '87 Martin HD2832 Shenandoah with V neck (super comfy) which has a warm tone, getting better with age. I was not aware that these Retro strings were all nickel so I love how they bring out the nickel hardware on the head stock (see attached pic). Comparing these Retro strings to the med gauge 80/20 bronze Martin Marquis that I usually play, these Retro strings are just as warm and comfy, especially when finger picking. If bass is at 'noon', so is the brightness, even throughout. (When comparing to another brand, these Retros sound and feel just as great as the med gauge bronze Ernie Ball Earthwoods that I occasionally play.) I've been playing bronze strings for so long that I'd have to hear the nickle and bronze played back to back in order to hear a difference, if any. These Retros have a nice punch when strumming and leads are rich & full. I have no doubt they'll last just as long as the Martin Marquis. Looks like I've found another set of Martin strings that I'll play for awhile…I believe Martin strings play better as they get older.John564Holloway
If you, like me, find all that brightness, zingyness and abundance of harmonics of modern bronze or phosphor bronze strings just a little too tiresome the Martin Retro's will do the trick. Like it says on the tin, these will help bring out the tone of your guitar more instead of the sound of your strings. The slightly reduced string tension makes even a .013 set play quite comfortably. If it's good enough for Tony Rice it's good enough for me!

I'm obsessed with archtops but am simultaneously cheap when it comes to strings. I hate buying them like i hate paying for parking or a bottle of water. It just seems like one of those recurring costs i am not happy about. So the cheap side of me loves the longevity of coated strings. The OCD musician in me loves the sound of coated strings because they sound consistent from when you put them on until when they die. I've tried probably ever brand of coated string for 10+ years and Ernie Ball makes the best ones. The Everlast specifically sound fantastic right out of the package. The enamel they use makes the strings really smooth and slightly slick (in a good way). Since i play archtops string choice can really be make or break with a guitar. Bronze can start to sound really clangy. It used to be that i would have a certain brand with a certain guitar. The Everlast were the first strings that i can put on all of my acoustic archtops and they all have a sweet sound. So the Everlast don't have that brassy overtone that can be a little too much with archtops. I love picking up each of my guitars for 5 minutes throughout the day because i know they will sound fresh and have a sweet tone. These came installed on my new Epiphone J-45 and man do they sing. Nice bass response and they are not tinny sounding, got the just right acoustic sound. They are coated and to me they make it easier to play. As I haven't played them for that long I'll have to see how they hold up. One other reviewer gave them 3 stars but if you read the review, he was complaining about the shipping time and even said he hadn't tried them. I find it hard to believe that it was AMS's fault for the delay, they always ship super fast. I am a guitarist that likes the crisp tone of new strings, so maybe I'm not the right person to review these strings. I thought I'd give silver strings a try, so I put a set of these strings on my Ibanez AEL50 series acoustic/electric. They sounded "terrible/dead" unplugged AND plugged in, and were also quite hard to play in my opinion.-Comparison: I made a recording of the strings while they were on the guitar (via the pickup). Then I replaced them with some (acoustic) Black Diamond Phosphor Bronze strings and made another recording. As far as Phosphor Bronze strings go, I wasn't impressed with the tone, but they were way better than the silver set.-Conclusion:I don't see any advantage whatsoever to use silver strings on an acoustic/electric. I'm sticking with ElixirsSirHaxZealot

I am an intermediate guitar player so I don't know a lot about different kinds of strings. I went to a bluegrass work shop and overheard several people speaking of them so I thought I would give them a try. I like the tone when my guitar is not plugged in but they really seem to be at their best when I'm switched on to the amp, They are touted by Black Diamond as being made for acoustic electric guitars so maybe that's why. I have several hours of playing on them so far and they seem to hold tune well. I tune my guitar daily but I have noticed that it isn't really neccessary with these strings. I give them a thumbs up. John pearse phosphor bronze is our best-selling string. the tone is meaty, articulate, and lively, and in my experience (your mileage may vary, of course), they last longer than any other uncoated strings i've ever used. this is why i use these pbs on my own guitars more than any other string. my favorite gauge, by the way, is the new medium. stringmakers have been producing custom light and slightly light strings for years, since folks often like a string a bit lighter than true lights, but not quite as loose and slinky as extra lights. well, john pearse's new medium gauge fills that same gap on the heavier side of things. new mediums are just a bit heavier than lights, but not quite as heavy as true mediums. it's worth tossing in a set with your next jp order—if you're like me, you may find yourself restringing all your guitars with new mediums.

I had the opportunity to meet John Pearse at a Guitar Show in Nashville back in the 90's right after acquiring a Larravee 12 string. He very kindly handed me a set of his light guage 12 strings and said "try these on that guitar". I've used them exclusively on ever acoustic i have ever since then. The tone on my martin, larravee and takemine are the best i've found. I've played professionally for many years (30,,,,,oh man,,,) and find his strings to play evenly from rich low tones to crisp high tones. Bought these wanting something different than the usual Ernie Balls and Martins (good strings for sure). Priced a little higher, but the quality is there. I put these on my Ibanez Artwood 240 mahogany top guitar and love the tone I'm getting. Stay in tune very well, and seem to have a stronger feel and volume with them. The Ibanez came with "coated" strings which I dislike the feel of but with these, I can bend, hammer and pull with ease. Will buy again.guitarkis

I have used these strings with much sucess for about three years now. During the summer months I play 6 shows a week mostly outside in what is considered a humid climate since I am right next to the Ocean. I change these strings out once a week if I remember to wipe them off. No breakage, and I like the tone I don't play hard. I have tried Martin SP's D'Addario and DR Rares all light gauges (12's) from time to time with the effort of finding the "perfect" string, but continue to use the GHS's. I play 60's and 70's soft and classic rock and do some lead playing and these strings have been good to me.

I've been on the lookout for some thicker 12-string sets (not for down-tuning, but just so the thing puts up a bit more fight), and they're getting hard to find (most companies max out at .10's). So I was glad to stumble across these, and the price point seemed right; however, while bringing them up to tension and making requisite truss-rod adjustments, two of the new strings [high A .22w and high G .10] popped, leaving me to go shopping the next day for individual strings. Ernie Ball has long been my go-to for electric strings, and I can't say this experience rules them out for me, but I was disappointed. Will definitely be trying Martin strings the next time my 12 needs changing, as they offer even thicker strings and come recommended from several friends I've talked to since. On a final note, if you haven't tried using sets where the high A is wrapped, I'd recommend you do so; the high A has always been one of the main sources of 12-string tuning frustrations in my experience (if it sounds in tune open, it sounds off when fretted & vice versa), and having it wrapped seemed to clear a lot of that up.czdolphy

I am trying these even though I had no serious complaints about the other brand of coated strings I use. These sound good when you put them on, the other brand might take a few days to sound their best. These do seem to be slightly louder, with a little better tone. They are slightly harder on your fingers due to the different coating process. The other brand slightly fills in the gaps between the strings making them feel a little smoother, these have the core/wrap coated with a very thin ( invisible ) coating and have the same feel as regular strings. Not really a complaint, I will take less smooth/better tone any day. If they last any where near as long as the other brand I will be using these from now onMac

I am quite happy with the Stringjoy Acoustic Strings and I'm still deciding which ones are my favorite. I recently put on the Foxwood and am now needing to record an "original guitar only song" with it on a direct track and a high end microphone track. Then I will do the same with the Naturals and also the Brights. At least I can then do a comparison but my suspicion is the I might prefer different strings for various purposes. Such being the case, I am not currently positioned to supply anyone with a FAVE RAVE!!!David F
Love these strings. I’ve had them on my Ibanez AC240 for just a couple weeks but I’m blown away! They started unremarkable (in the best sense of course) but have opened up to a nice, full, vibrant sound. They don’t feel coated, but they don’t feel fully natural either which I love. Best of both worlds! I’ve been using your string cleaner with them as well and I’m convinced these will last a good long while before needed a swap out. I bought both coated and uncoated versions of the Stringjoy acoustic strings in regular medium light. I now have these on 3 different guitars and plan on installing on 2 more. Have to say I don’t know how you do it but the tension on these strings seems different than anything else I’ve ever used. They just seem “comfortable†and sound fantastic. They’re pricey but worth it. Only con I can think of is they’re a bit noisy when sliding but I’m sure I’ll get used to that.David M

The best acoustic strings for the buck! I have tried many many brands,but these are by far the most consistent tone reliabe, stay-in-tune phosphor-bronze sets I've used. My go to set for the past 15 years, presently using them exclusively on my prized Collings D3. Contrary to some other reviews, I think the box travels well and does not pose any sort of problems when removing the strings. I keep the strings dry in a gig bag or work box to avoid shelf life issues. High quality strings in a box that travels well and keeps me playing for months on end? Perfect. I have been using these strings in this box for about four years now, and I have never been let down. They were already my favorite strings. Excellent playability and longevity. Excellent value. For me I think it is the fact that the g-string is like an electric string and not wound like an acoustic string. Because of that, when I strum the whole acoustic sound is "off". To my ears, bare-finger picking and medium gauge picks bring out the best in these strings.

At first I didn't like the jingly sound as it was my first time using extra light strings. Best strings i have come across in this price, great natural sound and lasted me a long time(about 5 months). Really can feel the difference after switching back to light gauge. I don't recommend these strings for gigs with an amplified acoustic guitar. Should be fine for practice at home. First let me say I am a LOYAL Ernie Ball user – I have used them on my electric guitars for over 35 years. I have tried others and always go back to my Ernie Balls. One of my bands has me playing more acoustic guitar now than before, and I wanted to try some extra light gauge strings so that (a) I could play leads better and (b) my fingers wouldn't be so torn up after a five hour bar gig. So I tried the Ernie Ball Earthwood extra light acoustic strings on my Fender acoustic, equipped with a nice Fishman internal pickup. They are wonderful to play, easy on the hands and very bendable. Unfortunately they sound terrible. My band mates yelled at me the first gig, what happened to your guitar? The strings sounded tinny and distorted terribly. No tone, no volume, no projection. I don't think it is entirely because of the lightness of the gauge. I replaced them with Fender light gauge acoustic strings (11 – 52), barely bigger than the EBs (10 – 50), and the tone is back to what it should be. I still love Ernie Ball – but these Extra Light Acoustic strings just didn't work for me. Nice to play but they don't sound good. Priced right.tbalek
