This book is for ages 5+. If you have never played the guitar before this is the book for you. It will teach you finger picking and chords. This book is volume one and two combined. The CD is great to listen along to if you get lost in the lesson. The only thing I did not like is that the book does not recommend the next level book.reneect

the book is nice and simple so my child should be able to do well with this BUT the part in the Walmart.com website that says "included cd" a cd does not come with it. it gives a code inside the book so you can go to a website to listen or download the songs. I was really hoping for a cd so my daughter could listen and learn in her room.rebelbaybe

this really is good for children – far clearer "how to tune" than seen eleswhere, & finger positions. Children simply need CLEAR details, and here they get them. words to tunes so they [& / or siblings] can sing along adding to the fun of learning. MY old tutor book, some 70 years ago, put me right off so switched to clarinet !!truefoxy
Although this guitar book is geared to children, I only wish it would have had age ranges listed on each of the series of publications. For a 6 year old child, it seemed to be a bit overwhelming. As I have not yet been able to view the video, I cannot give it a completely fair review.Katharine
My granddaughter has been using this book to learn how to play the guitar and is now enjoying playing tunes successfully0247cookie

This is an easy and inexpensive (under $10 without tax) way for your beginner musician to learn to play guitar. It has placards for under the string placement (for correct chord finger positioning), a CD for her to follow along with the book and appears easy enough to keep a child's attention. It was a great accompaniment gift to the $19 30" starter guitar I bought from Wal-Mart at the same time for my seven year old grand-daughter. It will allow for her to learn in her own time on her own terms, allowing for me to see if she's serious enough to buy her a more expensive instrument later. And the site to store folks were very nice and helpful, quick in expediting the delivery in a timely manner.Joel2120

Just first glance but very basic and beginner. Says you can play like Metallica, GNR, etc…but not actual riffs just like which I can get elsewhere so no worries. Laid out for starters and not sure which book to purchase next once these lessons are over but its enough to get started into some theory also. Good for money and kids!sellddis

Reviews:
This really isn't a good book for children or anyone else. The first few pages can be somewhat useful for a very young child, or one with a short attention span. You basically start off with some very basic counting and very small one finger chords. To be useful you must be sure the timing is right, the rests are clean and the finger position correct as well as chord tones ringing clear. In most cases this requires outside studies for building basic technique. The lower fret notes tend to be difficult for the young child at first as well as cause the fingers to hurt. Some of this can't be avoided of course, your fingers are going to hurt a bit till you get them built up. However, several factors add to this. The beginner uses to much pressure (frets to hard), some of which is due to lack of correct finger placement and tension. The result is they push harder to compensate. Softer finger tips don't resist the strings as much, thus they push harder. The fact most beginners, epically young children don't usually start with a great instrument. Several even start with a very cheap guitar that is hard to fret or really can't be set up to play properly. Thus you push harder. The frets can also be harder to reach down there for some so it can be a struggle. There's a lot of wasted space on repeating the same thing and going no where. Again it suffers from lack of actually teaching technical development, as well as placing the notes in a position children can actually developed good hand position. The book soon progress to 2 finger c chord then fuller chords. Generally speaking theses are to great of jumps for most. Theses are totaly unrealistic jumps for those who are still having issues getting 1 finger chords down. The other factor is of course transition between the chords. This must also be done in time and the more fingers, the more involved the movement. If the student has issues with this and dozen't know how to fix it, you've got another problem. The initial intent is ok, if supplemented by a teacher. The book really dozen't progress anywhere from there. Finally we get some single note playing, which again is ok, but need severe supplement from the teacher. With all the supplement needed, why even use the book. The only reason I'd ever start anyone with a basic strum with a simply chord is to focus there attention. Generally single notes are best, and certainly higher up the neck. What you need at this point isn't notes n music, but some basic technique builders and general practice guidelinesclittlern1
