After borrowing this book from a friend I immediately wanted one for my own that I would not have to give back. Unlike some videos I tried, this book starts with basics. Using both words and pictures the reader sees the proper positions and movements for both hands as well as how to sit and what the proper playing position should feel like. Some techniques for hand stretching and strengthening are also included. In 98 short pages this book goes from being aimed at the "complete beginner" to playing with other instruments to reading music and teaching intermediate techniques. Canty's writing style is easy to understand, and at times it felt to me like I was being tutored by someone who actually knew not only how to play, but how to teach. It is certainly not a college level text, but I think that is what made it useful to me: It's a simple instruction manual for a total beginner. I've borrowed this book in the past and liked it, I felt guilty about having a borrowed copy so bad I finally bought my own copy and I'm glad I did. There is no one to practice with or have as a mentor for a beginner and as a sounding board (no pun intended) for me during this Covid-19 Pandemic, but I'm managing on my own. I just need to practice, practice, practice!dmbo_32

Background I have never had a music lesson (beyond school) but I can (just about) play a tune on piano by ear (with limited success but still get enjoyment from doing so). Nort can I read music. Becoming a virtuoso ain't gonna happen! I've had my guitar for over twenty years (again NO LESSONS) but have decided to try to learn to play better. Dummies review So far, this "How To" book gets my vote because it is well written without too much emphasis on classical music notation. I am still reading/absorbing it (slowly); so my opinion is changing as I progress. Learning guitar or any instrument (or, for that matter, any physical and mental activity) from a book alone is never going to be easy but I feel this book is a great first step. The concommitant videos are a complete bonus. My inability to play guitar won't be down to the book 😉monty969
