Best Jazz Guitar Pickups (2024 Update)

I've played a lot of different Strats over the years and while they all had "that Strat sound" to varying degrees, the Fat '50s achieve seem to be the most authentic. By adding a treble bleed and turning down the volume a bit, I can get those classic chimey tones from the 50s and with the volume all the way up, I can get the bigger sounds from the 60s. The cleans are sparkling, but they sound great running through higher gain amps as well. Compared to pickups like the Texas Specials, these are not harsh to my ears, even in the bridge position. The Fender Mexican made 2017 Stratocaster is a nice guitar and as a standard out of the box guitar is good. One easy way to upgrade the sound is by installing the Fender Custom Shop Fat 50's pickup set. I measured the ones on a custom shop 59 before purchase to be sure of string alignment. I purchased a set and fitted them in about half an hour, fortunately my Mex ST had an Oak type 5 way and full size pots so no more upgrade work needed there. I did change the pot knobs and switch knob to white to match the new pickup covers. I installed a new set of strings, the pickups were test adjusted and sound great, a nice full sound, the front one is very rounded and clear, the middle is a classic sound and the back nice and strong. I was after a Shadows style of sound and these pickups did not disappoint. They give a clear sound and the right sound if you are looking for pure vintage tone.matt66red

I waited 5 months to write this review, I'll try to be unbiased. I replaced the stock ceramic pickups from a Fender Standard MIM. It's my first change of pickups ever, and the first time I play a guitar that sounds so classic, so I can not tell about the difference with a higher end model of Strat or a vintage one, but here goes my opinion: This pickups totally rock, well they don't only do rock, they play everything you want to hear from a instrument called "guitar", that means, 6 strings thru a wood body, they deliver the classic and just necessary electric guitar experience. No gimmicks, just the real thing, classic clean sound, lots of harmonics, dynamic sound, and driven sound wonderful, because they can be strong too, classic surf rock sound here. Took me a couple of days to adjust the proper height, the Alnico V magnets are strong so you have to be delicate to find the right spot for the three PUs, but once you are there, they are marvellous. The three pickups are pretty much the same, states the box, but the three positions are there, and the case with the medium pickup is a great surprise, it sounds very nice, very "middy" usable position, sounds as a custom medium pickup. I bought these because I like my EMG 81 & 85 set, and wanted to experience other models from EMG. I was impressed within the first few seconds! The 57 is richer and fuller than the EMG 81, while retaining the squealing harmonics that I desire. If you like active pups, you'll love these. If you don't, there's probably somethin' askew with your wiring. 🤣Weebly

I have tried many EMGs over the years and have never found any that I liked. To me, the tone always sounded sterile, lifeless, maybe even a bit processed…just didn't do it for me. After reading several reviews & watching numerous YouTube videos, I decided to take a chance on these. I'm glad I did! I had an LTD Deluxe EC-1000FR that I bought used and it had a pair of the Seymour Duncan Slash signature pickups in it when I got it. While those pickups sound great in a Gibson Les Paul, they were not well suited for this guitar. The LTD originally would have had EMG 81/60 in it, but I already knew I didn't like those. So having PAF-style pickups in all of my other guitars, I wanted a similar tone for this one but with the amount of gain similar to the Bareknuckle Nailbomb that I have in my Les Paul. I didn't really want to put a $360 set of Bareknuckle pickups in a guitar I only paid $500 for though so when I discovered these at almost half the cost, I thought I'd give them a try. They're perfect for this guitar! All the mids, fullness, and dynamics normally associated with PAF pickups but with plenty of gain to really get things cooking! They are quite versatile for most any kind of music, whether it be metal, hard rock, classic rock, or heavy blues, I feel any styleis possible. Finally, a set of EMGs I love! I have a new found sense of respect for EMG and will likely have more guitars with these pickups in the future! Overall: I've been through dozens of humbuckers over the last 20 years. I never found one that gave me the exact sound I heard in my head, until I got the tone zone. It works clean, slightly overdriven and with over the top overdrive. Country to metal it is responsive to pick attack, responds to volume changes and is the most balanced sound I've experienced. It's very full sounding without being overly compressed. It's very articulate and notes ring out. Great harmonics too. I've paired it with a PAF pro in the neck on my Charvel, but it works great with an air Norton in the neck of my les Paul. I'm probably going to put it in all my guitars now, even the ones that have pickups that cost twice as much. By the way, sounds great if you split the coils too!Michael

Just put this in tonight and am very happy with the sound. I got an ESP really cheap at a pawn shop so I could leave it at the house where my band practices. We've been using alternate tunings and I don't want to carry 2 guitars with me and I wasn't going to leave one of my good guitars there cause there's always too many people in and out. The ESP looks great but had these cheap pickups in it and they seriously sucked. So, I really looked around and researched different pickups. I've always changed out my pickups, but wanted to try something different than what I already have. I liked the reviews of others, so I used half of the Backstage Pass Points I had and it took about a week for the pickup to arrive (i did order it around Christmas – wasn't in a hurry to get it). I'm very impressed with the response. Makes this cheap ESP a totally different guitar. I tried many different effects and it is very bright and full through my Fender Mustang. I saw a few negative reviews that used the term "muddy". I do not find that at all. Very happy with this pickup!!bangitsmom

Overall: I bought this bugger after doing countless hours of research and having multiple failed attempts trying to find a way to fatten up my thin and weak sounding 2017 Gibson SG HP. It came stock with classic 57 in the neck and classic 57+ in the bridge and I originally thought it had to be the titanium nut and titanium/aluminum bridge because I had the same combination of pickups in my 2017 Les Paul Classic (non weight relieved) and it was fat as hell sounding, almost too fat(if there can be such a thing). So I replaced the nut with a bone nut (cut for wider string spacing than stock to really take advantage of the wider HP neck) and did an ABR-1 conversion with brass saddles (wider string spacing as well to match the nut, which from a playability standpoint really made the guitar go from "overrated" to "I am never selling this thing because of the playability"), those mods helped a little, but it wouldnt really come alive and start filling in the bass and low mids until my Marshall DSL was cranked past 2 or 3 o'clock on high and then it sounded fantastic. Well that wasn't acceptable because I could only do this about once a month at most, usually way less. And the rest of the time I was either a bedroom player, or playing and practicing with friends at my house or theirs and we both have families and little kids so we can barely get to 9 o'clock on the volume if we are lucky, and even if EQ'd for more bass and mids, it never sounded right. Well I ended up trying a custom/59 hybrid, a custom (and every magnet possible in it), a JB, an Invader (yuck visually but close sonically, just too much of that I AM CERAMIC sound) and even a duncan distortion I had lying around because I was desperate. So then I started really doing some research and while making every attempt possible to stay out of the Dimarzio camp (always have been a duncan guy), I finally ended up with a choice between two pickups. The Norton and the Tone Zone. I was leaning more toward the norton, but from what I know about SG's is they either love pretty hot or paf style pickups and everything in the middle is jus blah, and zZounds had an F spaced Tone Zone in stock. So I pulled the trigger and ordered a Dimarzio liquifire to go in the neck because petrucci lead tones are just so super awesome and fluid and I am not on the neck much because I do mostly rythm and I wanted to match brands so I wouldnt be paying the in phase/out of phase game and having to swap leads or magnets. Well ding ding ding, that was where the magic was at. That bridge pickup and that guitar now sound great, they sound good no matter where your EQ is, no matter what amp your playin into, no matter what volume level. There is always just the right amount of firm bass and crisp but fluid highs, and I swear that the only thing that ever changes are the amount of mids when changing EQ or amps and they never overpower or missing from the sound. So all in all I have become a Dimarzio guy overnight. It is the best sounding guitar I have, or have even heard, it is crazy, but the only other guitar that come close to sounding as good every time I plug in is my SG jr with a dog ear gibson P90 (totally different sound, but just as good and versatile as the SG with the Tone Zone). I do not know if this will work in every guitar and there are some I would definitely say hell no on (thinline tele -alder body with maple cap is a big hell no, it's a super picky guitar as well). But if you have something that lacks a set of balls or sounds super thin and wimpy, The tone zone is the shot of steroids that will thicken and fatten it right up.Dallas

This pickup reminds me of the Dimarzio Breed pickup which is now discontinued. This is a little more balanced in the mids however which is nice. The output is moderate but not high output, but it definitely is a modern sounding pickup. It is very clear and articulate but not harsh and the top end is thick and smooth. Works very well with high gain amps. I have three of these pickups in my guitars and they seem to work very well with many different wood types, Mahogany, Ash and Alder. I have had this pickup in another guitar for over a year and still really like it, thus the reason I purchased another. For a great no too over the top pickup that seems to work in many different applications, this can't be beat.Dave

So, I recently bought a 2020 Epiphone Les Paul Custom Silverburst for a backup guitar. My number 1 being a 2019 Gibson Les Paul Traditional. The Epi is a beautiful, great playing (after a good setup) guitar. But the Epi Probuckers kinda suck. Enter these Seymour Duncans. I can't believe that I just discovered them. They transformed this beautiful mud-machine into a pro level instrument. (Along with a new nut and bridge) But the tone possibilities are endless. Clean, warm jazz. Bighty blues, serious distortion/ metal/crunch. They're really affordable, easy to install and will transform any B-grade guitar into a serious player. Buy them, you'll see….Gary N

I bought a DBZ (Dean B Zelinksy) now Diamond guitars model Royale FM in Tobacco. Excellent Korean made guitar but the pickups never meshed with me. I wanted it to sound more Les Paul-ish. The pickups that came with it are well made by G&B but seemed more geared for metal. Triple ceramic bridge and alnico neck. These pickups give this great guitar Body and Neck a more traditional sound. I love them both, in humbucker and even split coil. The thin large body on this guitar has resonance for days due to its unique shape despite being light. I took a chance and love this guitar. The neck and hardware is great too. The JB and Jazz set are Seymour Duncan favorite combination so what more is there to say? I still wonder about the 59 in the neck instead but I love the SH-2 Jazz so I am not disappointed. The Mojotone clone of the 72 wide range humbucker was exactly what I was looking for in tones and quality. I installed these in a Fender parts-caster build of a deluxe tele and am very happy. Clear mids with a nice balance of of chime and punchy bass. Playing through an Orange 7W head and 112 cabinet. Bought this to replace a dead bridge pickup in a 98 Mexican Standard Strat. As I stated earlier I thought this would be a little hotter than the single coil it was replacing. Overall I'm satisfied with the tone I get out of this pickup and I really like the fact that it's super quiet. Again, unlike the single coil it replaced. Not many features. It's a stacked humbucker. Pretty easy to install if you can use a soldiering iron. Seems well built. It's a very quiet pickup so that's a plus. Not too expensive. It got the job done at the price I was willing to pay.Strat Jimi

I purchased an Epiphone Les Paul with active EMG 81/85 pickups. It wasn't horrible, but I felt that the pickups were a little sterile. Changing them out for the EMG Fat 55 pickups was a breeze since they both have quick connect wiring. All you have to do is unscrew them, disconnect the wire then connect it to the new pickups and screw it back in. It's a 15 minute job with no sodering required. The tone is much more passive in nature, with good natural tone, but it's also hot enough to drive an amp for metal or classic blues/rock. I would not say these are as natural sounding as a passive pickup, but much, much better than the 81/85 combo (for my needs).bonedigger

I had been hesitant about installing active pickups for years, due to all the mixed reviews I'd read. There seems to be no middle ground, people either love them or hate them. A friend of mine swears by the 81/85 combo, so I ordered the RetroActive set. All I can say is WOW! The neck pickup alone is worth the price of admission. These pickups have a very warm tone, not glassy or shrill, and the tone pot actually works. Even with the bass rolled up, the tone is clear and smooth. Installation was a breeze and my guitar is dead quiet, even at full gain. I will never buy another brand. EMG has outdone themselves with these vintage voiced pickups. Five stars.Dru

Overall: Just installed the zebra set in my Les Paul Prophecy EX and, wow! This is the best sounding set of pickups I have ever installed in a guitar! The clarity and gain structure is second to none. When playing clean, you can hear everything, all the way down to the pick impacting the strings, helping create a nicely percussive sound and giving you that clean tone you've been longing for. Dirty, these pickups push you further into the territory of sonic, god-level, overdriven greatness!!! Pinch harmonics are much easier to attain and are supremely clear! A lot of people seemed to go with the hype from Aguilar,EMG, Nordstrand and many others. What they don't know is that the most expensive pickups aren't sign of the best tone you can get. These Dimarzio Ultra Jazz pickups are seriously the best Jazz pickups not only for the money but for the beautiful tones you can get out of it. I'm really impressed with the nuances I can get out from these pups. I've played and owned Seymour Duncan, EMG, Fender,Bartolini and many others and my honest opinion these Ultra Jazz pickups are the best of all. Before you go spend $150+ on a set of overrated pickups, give these a try and you will see what these pickups are really about.805musician

I am a longtime guitarist and have recently picked up the bass. Bought a nice MIM J bass, but the noisy PUPs were killing me. Talked to a bunch of guitar techs and they all said the best bang for the buck are these Dimarzios. Installation was a breeze…I could have done it, but my tech only charged twenty and; now that I have seen it done I would do it in the future myself. AND they sound great….changed the whole nature of the instrument and my playing. If you do one upgrade, this is it…really noticeable and very easy..Byron123

I use these pickups to replace standard single coils. They have a great tone & cancel the 60-cycle hum, especially at high volumes with gain. But they have also become indispensable to me for all tones (especially clean) in the studio. The HS series (2, 3, & 4) are all very similar. They are fairly low output. Which works great when paired with a loud tube amp. They have a little less bass & treble response than standard single coil pickups, but I make up for it with volume. Conversely, a standard single coil at high volume is too flabby, bright & buzzy for my tastes. The HS-3 solves all those problems.csch8150

This is a great pickup. It is not to far off of what a stock strat pickup sounds like. The difference is. It is some what louder,It takes distortion better,Pick atack is better and more responsive. And its hum cancelling.stoetzer8y4n

I purchased this to upgrade the pickup in my Ibanez AF71F that I was getting bored with. I was hoping for an improvement, but wow! I never expected anything like this. This is like having a brand new guitar. This pickup is absolutely amazing. It is extremely versatile. Roll off the tone a bit for warm jazz sounds, roll it back on for bell like chime. Set it somewhere in between for other tones. It also played well with my Big Muff, Tube Screamer, Chorus and Janglebox pedals. You can cover a lot of musical territory with this one pickup. I also didn't have any problems with feedback or noise. I run through a Blackstar modeling head into a 2×12 cab running Eminence speakers for practice. Even standing right in front of the cab and playing, there was no feedback. I played for several hours and didn't want to stop, but I had to go to work the next day. A couple of additional things. Two of the holes in the mounting bracked don't line up with the factory Ibanez holes so I just left those 2 screws out and it's fine. The pole pieces are adjustable, but I didn't find the need to change any of them. Easy install, just two wires to solder. As always, every guitar is different so YMMV. I replaced 2 cap Ibanez humbuckers in SR255 model. The Ibanez factory pups were powerful but not warm or punchy.These Jazz style pickups has given me the sound that was lacking to make this bass a performing bass. Got this to put on my acoustic/electric and my strat. I have been doing MIDI Guitar for over 20 years and the GK-3 pickup system design is the evolution of the species… It is compact and relatively easy to install if you take your time to read the installation guide and have patience, making sure you get the correct distances and pick-up to string tolerance. Most folks will be able to fit this on a guitar in about an hour or less, and get good results. It is important to follow the directions to insure that you get the best tracking response. I used the provided spacers with adhesive-tape to mount the pick-up because I do not want to drill into my guitars for permanent mounting. Roland provided enough sizes of spacers to get the pick-up to string tolerance just right, along with the radius adjustment and the included gauge, I was able to get a really nice set-up. Having years of experience with the Graph Tech Hexaphonic piezo pick-ups and Ghost MIDI pre-amp as well as the earlier versions of the GK MIDI pick-ups and the early Shadow pick-up system. The GK-3 does the job very well… The pre-amp/switching housing is nicely slim and the mounting system is excellent, unobtrusive, easy to install and does not permanently attach to the guitar. No worries about damaging the finish… (Speaking about the Acoustic set-up): After careful installation and matching to my AXON AX-100 system, the tracking is excellent… Pretty amazing to have MIDI tracking on an acoustic! Initially it seems that it produces less false triggers as compared to the Ghost pick-ups/Hexaphonic on a solid-body electric, which are excellent, but the GK-3 system tracking just seems to be a bit more solid, especially with 32nd notes on low-E… With the AX-100 I had to crank the individual string sensitivity levels up to get good string balance as compared to the Ghost/Hexaphonic pick-ups… (The GK-3 will not work for guitars using Silk & Steel or Nylon strings).Lynnwood guy

I use this through a Roland GR-33 (older version of GR-55) that goes to a synth amp and I also have a separate guitar signal from the same guitar that goes to my guitar amp. I can get amazing synth pad tones behind the guitar. Many people wonder if my band has a keyboard player because they can't figure out where the cool synth tones are coming from live. The GK3 opens up a world of possibilities to guitarists who are open to experimenting!neenernouche

I highly recommend the GK3 pickup for use in combination with the Roland GR55. It's an awesome interface for anyone who wants to use their guitar as a MIDI controller. Some problems with a coating on the pin connectors on the cable cause some strings to lose sensitivity, this can be remedied by using de-oxit and by inserting and reinserting both ends of the connector into GK3 a few times. Also the small cord coming up from the pickup is not attached very well and is in a location where your hand continually rides while playing, the small piece covering the cord will eventually work its self off breaking solder connections as a result. I have three guitars with GK3 pickups and one with a GK2. I have always enjoyed plugging straight into my amp with the GK3 pickup through the GR55 Roland guitar synthesizer. Morgan HardistyMORGAN

Installed it on a 20-year old Santa Cruz dreadnaught, and using with the ToneWood Amp. No preamp needed! Have only recorded with it into GarageBand thus far, and it is remarkably good, but I think it will be spectacular in a live setting as well.apexl8er

Very good pick-up and easy to fit without chopping up my old guitar. One slight issue: the poles are spaced slightly too far apart for my Gibson J50. Optimum sound hole size info is provided in the blurb but not string spacing. I can get some overlap on 1st and 6th strings by turning the pickup so it does the job. Since this is a passive pick up it does require a substantial increase in volume from your amp or input. I run it through a red eye twin DI which helps greatly and can adjust the gain. I combined this pick up with a K&K and gives an incredible sound. The pole pieces do need to be adjusted and tailored to your liking. The B and e pieces need to be dropped down significantly. For me I needed to increase the base E, A and D to give a fuller sound. When I compare the K&K to this pick up their pretty close. The K&K has a better definition and clarity but they are close and for some reason when I put them together through the red eye twin di they sound magical together. You really need to adjust the K&K input down and crank up the black angle since it's allot lower input. 50/50 mix of the two sound great.G

Hands down! The best sound for an acoustic. I was looking for something that I could hear each string with the same balance. And this pickup was perfect! You dont hear more of one string or less of one. Every string has the same volume and tone. And in the clean channel with no eq, it has natural low end!performanceautoglassandtint

This pickup works great. It's easy to install yourself if you're brave. It took me about an hour. I recommend several pieces of tape over the end pin hole before you drill the guitar, this helps prevent chipping the finish, I also recommend access to a good belt sander to get the bridge sanded down just right to compensate for the pickup underneath it. I use this pickup with an LR Baggs ParaDI and I always get a great sound with them.ToddAllenHooper

I have had my shecter omen 6 for over 2 years now and although the pickups where fine i've always fwncied a change and so finally decided these EMGs where for me. The kit comes with the full solderless wiring set needed to install into your guitar, and it honestly couldn't be easier! All the leads are small enough to fit through the pre drilled holes in my guitar, even though my guitar came installed with passive pick ups. The hardest part i had about the set was i had to slightly squeeze the output jack spade to make it get through the gap but other than that it was faultless. Battery even fits in the control unit area so no need to route out any holes for a the battery! (Bonus!) As for the pickups the neck is truely fantastic cannot get enough of the tone from it, i can't say i'm a massive fan of the bridge pickup so may eventually swap that out, but it's still early days so i may come round to liking it. Of you are in the market for pickups as a first upgrade, i would highly recommend these however 10/10 for packaging, ease of install, and a solid 9/10 for the pickups themselves.Reviewed by Andertons Music Co.

I love these pickups. I bought the brand new 2019 Schecter Red Reign Apocalypse HT and the pickups in it we super mid and high focused but literally had zero bottom end so they were to thin for my liking. After doing a bunch of research thinking I didn't want the typical active pickup because they sound too compressed I found these. After so many demos and and also reading I saw how these were more of a hybrid sound passive yet active. And wow the sound was amazing more then I could ask for even comparing them to my Seymour Duncan invaders, my emg 81/85 combo or 81/60 and my PRS 81 something s's they have the perfect harmony very well balanced. They are high high output so even little gain was impressive and saturated. The only issue was the guitar has a small cavity for electronics so I really had to tweak the emg system to fit like a puzzle. So something like an S series Ibanez may have some real issues with cavity space. But regardless amazing pickups.RobfromVB

Great, high gain pick-up. The neck is bluesy, warm and cozy. The bridge is aggressive and thick. However, because it has passive properties, it's noisier than one is used in an active pick-up. Get a noise gate, if you don't already have one, you'll be golden! Also, the installation was so easy and almost completely solderless. Only the connection to the toggle/selector switch requires soldering. I made my installation 100% solderless by also getting an EMG toggle switch kit.Christopher E.

The pickup is everything its supposed to be just not what I was looking for. Tried to fit into a Strat custom shop 63 RI and the cavity from the guitar is not deep enough. The pickup sounded really good. It maintains the Strat character. Sounds more like a Steroid strat than a Les Paul. I believe pickups will only do so much. Wood and shape still play important part of overall sound. Like I said, just not what I was looking for and some fitment issues, but still a great product. I once had this pickup in and American Strat and was very pleased. That's why I purchased it again. Highly recommended for extra punch and still sounding like a Strat should.needa64

So I'm not much on traditional strats. I love the way they play and feel but never cared for the sound. I had one collecting dust and was going to sell it when I decided to give the JB jr. a shot. My strat went from never played to played all the time. Now I have a guitar that looks and plays great but is actually useful. The neck single coil is great for clean but now the bridge can do all the hard rock and metal stuff that I like to play. Now I can cover a lot of different styles without swapping guitars. The great thing is installing it was as easy as dropping any regular single coil. It came with clear instructions and was a perfect fit. One of the best upgrades I've ever madeMichael A

Installed easily. Definitely adds crunch that can't be had with a stock Fender single coil. But the tone is more middle with much less high end or low end than I was expecting. Tweaking pole height helped some. My Strat has 250k pots, so maybe if one were ambitious and swapped to 500k that could help? Don't get me wrong -it ain't bad at all. But it doesn't have that sharp bite that my Ibanez or Gibson guitars have.Marooned in Hawaii
