I was surprised to fine this heavy of a guage of strings. I didn't know they existed. The thing about heavy strings is that you have much more ability to play with dynamic resonance – something you can't really get with light guage strings. With these strings, you can play as softly as you wish but when you really want it to "come out" they don't disappoint. I also only play with the fleshy tip of my fingers which melds into the subtle nuances of chord and solo performance.garycgrieve
The package is for C standard, not Drop C as some people mistakenly think…well, I guess you could use them for Drop C if you like veeeery stiff strings. If you want strings for Drop C, I'd suggest a skinny top/heavy bottom set of strings with an 11 up top and a 54 or so on the bottom so the bottom E tuned to C doesn't get floppy and knocked out of tune easily. Anyway, I've been using these for a long time on my USA core line PRS Custom 24 in C standard. They seem fine for going down a half step to B standard and feel fine even up half a step to C# standard. That's as high as I'd tune these strings up, though. I couldn't recommend these strings more!Josh
I have these strings on my schecter c-1 SLS blackjack tuned all the way down to drop A#, and let me tell you, despite being labeled as optimized for drop C, I don't recommend them for that tuning. 11-52s, 12-54s and 11-56s are better for Drop C, but for Drop B and Drop A#, you will not find a better gauge than these on a 25.5 scale length guitar or a 26.5 baritone. The tension is absolutely perfect! It feels like a 10-52 set in E standard with the E string tuned to D! Like with all D'addarios, they are bright, long lasting, they feel smooth and they absolutely love locking tremolos. I can yank my floyd rose all I want and it still will not go out of tune. Since D'addarios are bright as I stated before, they also remain clear under high gain, which I use my marshall JVM on the red channel with a maxon OD as a boost and a peavey 5150. Between the tuning stability, the tension, the reliability, the playability and the string life, you cannot go wrong with these for baritone tunings!Daniel

I really like these strings. They are warm, and give what I believe to be the best tone on my Stratocaster's and Telecaster. I don't really remember when I first started using Pure Nickel strings (of any brand), but I DO know I have never used anything but Pure Nickel since. The strings got a 4 star rating. I purposely omitted 1 star because, I feel they don't last as long as say a Nickel wound D'Addario would…but then again, I have not found a Pure Nickel D'Addario set of strings. So I forfeit the longevity for the tone. I DID just today order some Fender 150M (medium gauge 11's)…which are also Pure Nickel. I would never order 10 sets of strings if I didn't like them. For years I've played flatwound strings, but when I bought my new Fender American Professional Jaguar I was taken by how lively and expressive the strings were! I left them on. There was a learning curve, with me having to learn a lighter touch, but the more I played them the more I liked them, I went on the Fender website, clicked on the "Chat with us" button, and asked what set came on the Jaguar. BUY THESE ! I hadn't used Fender strings for 30 years . A friend of mine bought out a music store so to liquidate he sold me all the strings and drum sticks in stock .. there were mostly Fender strings so I started using them . 20 packs of 9's lasted me well over a year . I work at least 3 night a week as a lead guitarists / vocalist . so I use my main Strat a lot . after I ran out of Fender's I used GHS and noticed I was breaking strings .. so I tried the Ernie Ball's .. breaking strings again ! These coated strings are the most long-lasting and tone-sustaining strings I've used. They're great for when you are always changing tunings (especially from high to low). The higher strings may not be as bright but they retain a more consistant sustain throughout the life of the string than normally uncoated strings. The best thing about them is the thick, rich rounded tone you get when playing lower registers and rhythm parts. They also dont need to be struck as hard to get a fuller sound.Craig

I figured I needed to have a heavier string gauge for durability and better tone. Searched around and came across these strings in the heavy gauge, and I could not be happier with them. These strings have great sustain, are durable, do not corrode as quickly as other brands I have used in my professional career playing music, and, despite their heaviness, are easy to play in standard tuning. Along with playing well with a pick and fingers, these strings also sound terrific when playing slide. You can get the same great tones out of these strings that Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks have with their lighter gauges, as well as channeling the fat tones that you hear from Duane Allman from the Fillmore East show. Great Garcia tones can come from these strings as well. Basically what I am saying is that you can still get those classic guitar sounds on these heavy strings without feeling like your losing tone or playing opportunities utilized by the players that inspire you who may use lighter string gauges. These strings also (as far as I know) have a round core instead of a hex core. I think that might be a reason why these strings have so much sustain, especially when you have some distortion or overdrive keeping them warm while playing lead. If you are on the fence about getting these, I recommend you give them a try just see how they work for you. They are no that expensive and its worth it to figure out what works for you as a player. Everything still had a huge sound, but previous order added a test set of the Boomer 8.5s for my Gibson Les Paul goldtop with P90s. These new M-steel strings are not worth the price. I have been using EB Cobalts for the last year and now have them on all 12 of my electric guitars. Because I have been impressed by Ernie Ball's recent innovations in string making I thought I would give these M-steels a try. First impression is that they do not have the nice silky feel on the fretboard that the Cobalts do. The one thing I can say about the M-steels is they are loud acoustically which means they are also loud going through the pickups and on to your amp. I found this to be a bad thing because my rig is already set up for the cobalts strings output and these were actually so loud that they were overdriveing the front end of my amp and creating a extra unwanted highend fizziness that sounded terrible. Besides this the M-steels break easily, you heard it here first. Specifically the wound strings are prone to breakage because they have a smaller core wire and extra large windings. My guitar has locking tuners and 3 of the 6 strings snapped off at the peg when I tuned to pitch. The wound low E string and D strings did this and the non-would G string also snapped at the peg. I though the non-wound M-steel were supposed to be ultra strong? I have never had this problem with any other string type. I was using a set of M-steel 10-52 btw so they are pretty thick to begin with and should never have this kind of breakage problem. As for how long they last I wouldn't know because I was so mad at myself for paying for this M-steel gimmick that I went and ordered myself another set of cobalts and threw the M-steels in the trash. In summary, this set is BEAUTIFUL. I reccommend this for any seven-string player out there (unless you're a jazz player – then get the D'Addario Chromes set). Definitely worth the money. This set of strings is just perfect for the style I like to play – Progressive Metal with some Metalcore influences. Its heavy gauge gives it a really nice tension for the low strings and keeps the high ones loose enough to bend and solo like Petrucci himself. I tune to A-E-A-D-G-B-E, which is standard Drop A tuning on a seven string, because I love playing on the tense and tight strings on the low end; however, I have dropped it to standard Drop F# and it sounded really good, too. It's really hard for seven string players to buy strings, because the selection is so limited out there, and we don't really have the option of the "Ernie Ball Skinny Top Heavy Bottom", which is what I love to play on my six strings. However, these work just fine. I really need the lower gauge on top, so finding this set with a thicker low end and a thinner high end really excited me. I've adjusted my string tension on my Floyd Rose system to match these, and I think I'm gonna stick with them. Because of how rare seven string players are, it's really easy for a huge company to jack up the prices on their seven string sets. This set is an exception, however; with standard shipping, it's less than seven bucks. Obviously, one can't ever be completely satisfied with price (because free is the best option ), but this comes close enough.
Once I switched to seven strings I was looking for strings that would give me good tension for drop A, a tuning commonly used on seven strings. However, many stock strings only go up to about 56-ish and consider that a "ultra heavy gauge." Considering I used 10-52 on my six string in drop C#, this wouldn't be nearly enough. Thankfully I found these strings and got them. They have the perfect tension for tuning below standard on the low string(s) without being to heavy on the higher-pitched strings. Don't expect to be able to pull off drop F# without issues, but try these out if you want a good metal sound with fantastic tension.Brian Dice
I use this pack on a six string (drop the 10) when tuning a regular scale guitar to C. They drop in perfectly, and the tension is great tuned as such. I find that they stay "tighter" and don't flop around as much as every other brand of string I have used. The sound is full and rich, without being too muddy. I went up in price of product in the hope that the strings would be colour coded but more importantly, packed singly to make identifying the right string during a gig would be easier. Better than expected. Solid tone. Easy to play. Just right. Not too bright, just clean and tight, as a well made set should sound. Lows still great, even at the slightly lighter gauge. Don't get me wrong, they can get plenty bright if you want that. Just that they didn't seem as extra bright as some kinds try to be because they can with all the "super nano ultra special coated infused …but still hand crafted somehow" type stuff. Was never happy with previous sets on my 5 string. With these, I was able to set up with slightly lower action. This alone is worth it on my instrument. Finally, it's the bass it should've always been. Waited way too long to find these. I hope they keep making them. Probably going to order a few extra sets and try to keep a few on hand. Overall: Don't pay any attention to the low price these are great strings. Have used Fender 7250's on all kinds of bass guitars they always sound great and feel good. Been using the 8250-5M set for awhile. Wanted to try a lighter gauge. I get more guitar tones out of these. I was concerned I might overpower them since I'd used medium gauge for a couple of years. These are literally perfect on my Modern Player Jazz Bass V and 2 1993 Jazz Plus Vs. I bought the Modern Player new from Musiciansfriend. I think this light set is the set that it had on it. I use a pick, single and double thumb as well as two finger picking techniques. The E and B strings give a nice low end. The A, D and G strings have a growl and bright tone and respond well to picking or plucking. I'll be using these strings for some timegeorgesguitars

Excellent strings for heavier music styles. I use them to play metal mostly, but they sound warm and rich in al kinds of styles. The strings feel great and the clarity is really good. I use Ernie ball strings for all my guitars and the quality for the price is phenomenal. I would really reccomend them to everyone.
My first experience with Ernie Ball strings. I bought them for my "heavy" guitar which I use for metal with heavy riffs and drop tunings. The combination of standard high strings and thick low strings provides a very versatile option for a heavy music. In my personal opinion, even in the standard E tuining the riffs sound more heavy due to a larger gauge of the lower strings. Drop D works great as well. And the feeling is different: when you hear the heavy sound and feel the thicker strings under your fingers – it adds the vide to the whole thing. Most likely I will stay with these strings for the heavy music for a while; so far I do not see a better option.Pavel

I've been using NYXLs for years, and they are the longest lasting strings I've ever used. Historically, I would change my strings after every other show because I would usually start breaking strings after 3 shows. With the NYXLs, I just keep playing them until they break because I can get often get 6 shows out of them! Sure, they may cost a tad more, but from my experience, they last twice as long.Tony
I'm trying these strings after years of using the standard D'Addario 11-49 set (EXL115). Only just fitted so it's really too early to review, however they do sound and feel great although not a lot different, which is fine, possibly very slightly stronger tension. The real test will be how well, over time, they stay in tune (which was my main reason for trying them), and whether they maintain their "new" sound for any longer than the standard set. I do love nickel wound guitar strings that one of the best choices I made. It has some pros and cons, but the only negative thing it contains those strings are not long-living strings, soon they lose its colour and brightness of the sound. But not everything is so sad! They are soft and you don't cut your baby fingers if you're an amateur of playing on the guitar, they are very awesome of you like punk, or funk, or even jazz, they are good for any style of music. Those cool strings are very good for the strong semi-professional career and if you choose them you won't regret your decision.ALEX
