Pay no attention to negative reviews out there. This pedal is the one to get if you own a Yamaha Keyboard. If you own a Casio or Korg, check the polarity requirements first before purchasing! A lot of people that have given bad reviews on this product were simply a case of buying a product without researching it properly first! The build quality is excellent, and I am sure it will last much longer than my past 3 Proline PSS2 Sustain Pedals that all quit working in only 14 months. The response and feel is like that of a pedal on a grand piano. Not to rigid, not too soft, not too bouncy(like many other 3rd party pedals out there). Again this pedal is NOT switchable so please check your keyboard/piano manual before buying!Juniors234
This unit is bloody brilliant! Works with everything! If I had any complaint it would only be that it doesn't come with any instructions, and there are likewise none on the company website. But I was born to Google, and I soon found a video on how to set it up with my Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol S88 Mk2 keyboard, and with the correct MIDI setting for SUSTAIN (64). It works with all my Spitfire Audio stuff, my KOMPLETE 13 stuff, DAWs (Ableton, Bitwig), you name it. It's awesome and robust. And if you choose different MIDI numbers, you can have the pedal control different things, just as a switch, but some use it as a kick drum! It's great! 🙂Adrian B.
I bought this just before going into the studio for a rehearsal. I plugged it in and realized that the polarity was reversed; the sustain was in effect when not pressing the pedal, and would stop when pressing the pedal. I inspected the pedal for a physical polarity switch. Finding nothing, I did a quick scan of the documentation. After not finding anything there, I did a quick google search and learned that there is no way to switch the polarity on the pedal itself, so tried various methods to switch the polarity. Unfortunately, none of them worked. I wasted a good 30 minutes of studio time trying to get this pedal to work with my keyboard before ultimately giving up. Fortunately, I was able to borrow a pedal with a physical polarity switch on it for the rest of the session. The lack of functionality was a real disappointment. I really liked the physical quality of the Yamaha pedal. The action on the pedal was very responsive. Before recommending this pedal; however, I would warn any future purchasers to do a search to see if it works with their particular brand of keyboard.Craig

I was a little skeptical of the price of this compressor but since I already own a VAMP 3 and it is very good so I decided to try it. The unit is made of a kind of indestructible plastic and is very solid. I like the added controls for volume and tone as well as the compression controls. The compression is excellent and the attack sweep is pronounced and has a wide range that is really useful. It sounds especially good on the split coil settings and is smooth and extremely quiet. I would definitely recommend this pedal to anyone. It may not be as good as ones that cost 4 or more times as much but it is pretty close.Jerzy
Maybe its just because its the first compressor Ive owned, but this paired with a Behringer noise suppressor has completely made my playing time more enjoyable. Its clean and quiet and makes everything you play sound lush, warm, and interesting. Lots of ability to dial this pedal to your taste. If you are losing faith in your playing or just getting bored with your sound, pick this pedal and a noise suppressor up. You wont be disappointed. This is a low cost but great sounding compressor pedal for guitar.I have two other compressor pedals (as well as two rack compressors) that both cost more than three times what this Behringer pedal cost but I like this one better. It just does the job without adding noise or coloration to the guitars tone. I have been playing pro for 40 years now and have been through many pedals, amps and guitars in that time. Fortunately I got over the "fancy name brand only" stigma that many people still have and just look for something that is cost effective and just does the job. This compressor is a great example. My set up is my Les Paul or Epiphone Sheraton into the Behringer pedal then out to my old Dunlop Wah pedal to a BBE Sonic Stomp (also a great product) into a VOX VT30 amp mic'd to the PA with a Shure SM58. (Although there is a decent compressor built into the effects section of the VOX VT30 I like the Behringer better.) If you are looking for quality sound at a great price buy the Behringer pedal. Purchased for use with the Casio CTK 2300. This is a MUST HAVE item for keyboards that do not have touch sensitive keys (like the CTK 2300). It appears to be very well made, and is the same height and size as the pedal on a real piano. I originally ordered the pedal to make the keyboard's piano voice sound and feel more like a real piano but upon installing it, I discovered a really neat effect when using it for the organ and strings voices – these voices automatically sustain themselves and only stop when the pedal is depressed. (The CTK 2300 has four 'functions' settings for sustain pedals – this effect is achieved using the default setting of 'SUS'. I am guessing most electric keyboards have a similiar set of options) It can take some getting used to, but this effect alone makes the pedal a must-have item. I could write a whole page on just the things you can do when playing the organ and strings voices. The pedal itself is heavy enough that it stays in place and the ONLY drawback to this pedal is that the plug is a straight-on plug. A 90 degree angle would be preferred since my keyboard is up against a wall in my rather small home studio, but that is a trivial issue given the overall quality of this item.Les Paul Disciple
With the polarity switch it works on all keyboards. The sustain pedal is nothing but an on/off switch. I have a FC3 which does not work on my Yamaha MO8 as a half/ whole on sustain. It does work as a volume pedal in the the second pedal input. If you're spending more than what you can get the m-audio for on a sustain pedal you're just wasting your money. The m-audio is all you're ever going to need. Actual price can't be given because those words (number and signs) are restricted. This perfect little gem of electronics is indeed the philosopher stone (I really like the name play here). It is encased in a little heavy metal box, no cheep plastic here. *You must* have an external power supply adaptor because the pedal is too small to hold a battery. Power supply is 9 volt. I was surprised when I plugged this into my pedal board. I thought I might use it for some sustain in solos or maybe to tweak tones occasionally. It instantly became an always on pedal. The sound is just incredible. It takes my original signal, which I love, and somehow improves it without changing the dynamics or changing the original signal. The germanium gold version allows me to add grit to whatever I feel like. The clean channel is fun with grit, as are the moderate gain channels. My high gain sounds best without it, but grooves on high sustain compression. I run this through the effects loop of my Blackstar HT 60 212 and usually have my earthquaker dispatch master on as well. If you want some Frippertronics-style sound from your guitar/lapsteel/etc, this TC Aeon works well. It takes a little getting used to knowing where to position it on guitar neck for best results. When it vibrates the strings and the magic happens is worth any efforts to attain maximum string vibration. I tried an actual E-Bow a while ago, and while that might be better, the price point and ease of use of an E-Bow vs. the same basic result with less money, I'd pick the TC Aeon. Simple to use. Just open the package, pop in the battery, hit the power button and go. It has a pilot light on the bottom to help you see the strings when lining it up which helps. Works very well. It can get almost violent with the resonance of the string generated by the Aeon. Keep in mind that with any natural harmonic there are some 'dead spots' that just don't resonate but they are quite rare. This is so underpowered, you have to touch it on the strings to get it to work, thus creating a bunch of mechanical noise on the guitar. Just get an E-Bow. When I found out that I didn't try mine out in enough time to return it (bought for a recording project), I just smashed it with a hammer. I bought this compressor intending to use it with both Fender Strat and my bass guitar. I am a professional music producer and listened to the unit carefully in the studio headphones. It is a great tool if you know what to use it for. When used with a strat it makes the sound crisp and places the funky clean tone perfectly in the mix. The tone is somewhat on the colder side, with bright fluid sustain added to the sound. Think about it as a sustainer first and then compressor. Great tool in the pallette. However, there are a few things to keep in mind: – the unit makes a sub low cut when engaged even with the minimum effect added to the direct signal. Bassists bear this in mind (unless you are a hardcore punk bassist playing with distortion and a pick and don't care much about your sub bass tone). It can also be felt on the clean electric guitar sound (if it's funky tone in the band setting you would cut off the low end of the strat anyway). – with higher compression ratio settings you get more sustain but some noise is also added. – if you want to use the 9V battery with the unit keep in mind that to change the battery you need to use a screwdriver for 4 screws to remove the back panel of the unit.J
I love this pedal. I play an Epi Les Paul Classic, into my pedalboard, and into a 90's Peavey Bandit. The amp has a Jensen Mod soesker, not the original Scorpion speaker. The Bandit with this speaker has a great clean channel. I'm a long time Fender guy. Strats and Teles. I like a clear, bright fundamental tone. I found myself compensating with the LP and using the bridge pickup a lot. But still not satisfied with the clean tones from the LP. That changed when I put the Keeley Compressor Plus on my board. The conbination of the Blend control and the Tone knob gives me what I want. The Tone control is, to my ear, an exceptional circuit. I get the bright, clear tone I need and superb sustain. This pedal is a godsend for playing slide. The compressor goes before my dirt pedals with beautiful results-1-. I use a Boss SD-1 overdrive and a Donner Dark Mouse – a Rat clone. I'm very impressed with this compressor. I put all controls at about 12:00, which the manual recommends for humbuckers. Minimal tweaks from there to get what I want. Bought it to replace a cheaper compressor pedal that I wasn't happy with. Having been used to high quality rack compressors, was looking for a compressor pedal that could keep up to the bare minimum quality I need to record at home. Inserted it on my signal chain, turned it on and it was pure magic, just couldn't stop playing and fiddling with the controls. I usually play clean or near-clean through a Fender-ish Carvin SX-100 Combo. Until today, no matter what I did, my thin hollowbody Ibanez AFS-75 always had just a little "crud" in the tone. After reading another review talking about how they used the CS-3, I experimented around and here's what I've done. I've put the CS-3 between the guitar and the amp and run the rest of the effects including EQ through the effects loop setting the CS-3 (from Left to Right) at 1, 1, 10, 11. At these settings, my Flat Wounds have a new sparkle and equal level from string to string. There is no distortion pedal in my effects setup although I do dirty up the signal just a tiny bit using the Carvin Amp Distortion to add just a bit of life to my playing. I'm a Jazz Student (emphasis on student) seeking that organic jazz guitar sound and the CS-3 has improved the tonality and removed the crud. It's actually pretty startling.Ed
I have tediously tried many bass compressor pedals and just couldn't find the one that I was comfortable with. You want a lot of sustain and a nice punchy but squashed signal for most rock or metal. I had been very impressed with the boss cs-3 for my guitar and wondered if there were a bass version. I stumbled accross the bass smasher which is a modified version of the cs-3 and felt very confident it would do what i wanted. It performs beautifully. The only reason i dont give it a five star is because it can still be a little noisy if dial up to high. But if you know how to use noise suppression gear this won't really bother you. I imagine when compressing notes with high sustain its very difficult to get rid of all the noise. Highly recommend for a cheap and easy way to get balanced tone and high sustain. This is an amazing pedal. if you need a compressor this pedal has 6 different compressor settings that can all be controlled via midi. the blend control is super useful for dialing in exactly how much of the compressed signal you want. the eq is a 3 band eq with bass, middle, and treble. this is a great tool to use to shape your tone. i used it for when i ran a rig with two guitars so that i never lost any frequencies that i wanted that another guitar may not have had a enough of. the boost or bloom as jackson audio calls it starts at unity gain and goes up from the tiniest boost all the way to a what ll make some amps sound like it had its drive turned to 12. overall a very dynamic and useful pedal.i also have the original box included.

I have tried a LOT of compressors over the years, never kept any of them (as a solo boost) I can dial in the perfect amount of compression without killing the dynamics of the amp along with a mid boost and slight treble roll off to make my amp sing! I run the gain on the amp about 3 for "clean" and use the Bloom boost with just a little bit of bump to get into fat crunch and then the comp plus eq for solos. All controlled via MIDI Transparent, doesn't jack with my tone. I borrowed a friend's Synergy Syn 1 with the DS module for a week with the intention of buying one.. no more.Charles

The presets are nice to dial in different types and they can be tweaked via MIDI if you're looking for that level of tweakability. I found myself setting it the country mode and really only tweaking the blend knob to control the overall sound of the comp. I like that I can keep as much dry signal as I want to retain some of the dynamic while really pushing the compressed frequencies. The boost is a standard clean boost that adds nice clarity and sparkle. Then you have a three band EQ that adds extra flexibility. All three effects can be turned on and off independently of each other and their is a "bloom" mode with the boost where it will swell in if you press and hold. That's a nice little trick but I don't think I'll use it too much since the boost is almost always on. I use this as a table setter for the rest of my rig now. Overall: I really understand compression as a science, and I was interested not because I could hear someone like David Gilmour turn it on or off. But that it’s been part of guys like that’s rig made me want to see why. So I ordered the mini ego after watching demos. And I asked Wampler by commenting on his YouTube video about having heard of excessive noise from these pedals. He answered, so I decided to try his because of him taking a minute to answer. First, there’s no excessive noise. Period. So, I have been experimenting and found right off you can’t really get a bad sound. I tried the controls in different settings and they change the sound and feel but I couldn’t get it to sound bad. I was able though to use it to provide a nice sounding boost, and the knobs are wide ranging. Putting the depth control at about 2 o’clock, and then using the blend knob I can get just a little volume boost, or add some liveliness and sparkle, or while using distortion from one of my 3 drive pedals I can get it to make say, my fuzz sing longer and almost like cleaner, but that’s not the right word. The Fulltone MKII, Morning Glory, and Dirty Little Secret can all be great with out the mini ego, but you can enhance them with this, or add different characters and sustain levels too. So with them all, my mild to hard rock distortion and fuzZounds are even more versatile. When I play clean, I am now just leaving it on, and turning down the blend until it is just adding note length. So clean Princeton RI or dirty Princeton RI goes from gorgeous to all kinds of amazing gnarliness! I got the Princeton from zZounds in December and with it is the first time I have been truly happy with a tube amp and pedals. Those 4 and delay, phaser, with the amp’s reverb and vibrato gives me more beautiful sounds than I have had before and I love the addition of the mini ego!Jason
I don't like to use a lot of compression but I like having it in the toolbox. Cheaper compression is too difficult to blend and control, more complex compression takes up too much pedalboard space for an average user. This is the perfect pedal for a clean boost. I play clean country, country rock, jazz, rock and roll, rockabilly, etc. and when I need to play lead I kick it in. No volume pedal guessing, just on and off. Only problem is I like it so much that I do not want to turn it off! Great design (with active LED readout while playing) and easy to adjust. Short battery life (3 hours) so be sure to order a 9volt wart or use a power supply. If only using battery power be sure to unplug the input on breaks or when through playing. With the power supply you can leave it plugged in as it disconnects the battery. One big plus, this baby works fantastic on acoustic guitars as well. Just turn the comp setting down below 12 o'clock. The CP1x unlike its predecessors CS1 2 and CS3 tend to typically lose a lot of the highs after the compression and alter the tone which has to be EQd then. The new CS1-X keeps the tone as natural. Also the digitals LEDS to show the signal are a nice touch. Not the mention the usual BOSS rugged metal body and metallic paint and metal look knob and control interface. Compression is often one of those effects that people either swear by or ignore entirely. Some lesser compressors don't seem to do much of anything when you click them on & off but when you're connected to a good compressor, you'll see what all the fuss is about. All i can say is, wow! studio grade compression in a pedal board sized pedal. fantastic sounding and versatile compression and sustain, this pedal is incredible! i have been simplifying my setup and hate to see it go, but i no longer use this pedal. it was always a mainstay on my pedal board. works well as an end signal compression, in the effects loop, or right after the guitar, works well as a great pedal for smoothing out the signal, or as a nice boost/preamp/compression. i have used it in multiple positions and with other compression and eq pedals it works well with other tone shaping pedals. it even plays nice with most fuzz pedals. like i said, since i have been simplifying my rig there are a lot of pedals i no longer use that are just taking up space, i would hate to see this one go but it needs to be enjoyed by others that will use it more than i. used in a smoke free home studio. has velcro on back.

Built like a tank, similar in operation to the EHX Freeze pedal but more expressive. I like the brass sustain pedal, it is easy to modulate the volume of the repeated phrase. You do have to be accurate in where you get the pedal to freeze the sound as it can result in a burbling type staccato repeat if you are not careful. I got the Wet switch unit with it but I cant see me using in the Wet mode very often.acppsavage

Features: The reason I'm bothering to comment about its features is because, when plugged into a MIDI controller, it works as another MIDI signal trigger just like a key, fader, knob, etc, would. I use this to trigger the main function button of Ableton Live's "Looper" device, which allows me to start recording my microphone's signal without having to touch the computer. Really handy when I want to get something down quickly and accurately but don't want to take my attention away from the instrument. Look at this Sustain Footpedal as another MIDI controller of its own! Quality: I got one of these with the Casio Privia PX100 years ago. I've never had any problems with it. It just works. Doesn't fall apart. Value: It's totally worth the $19. I'm selling my PX100, and the smaller MIDI controller I'm buying doesn't come with one of these, so I'm buying one from zZounds now.

Then it began not releasing the sustain in my keyboard, even though the pedal appeared to be coming back up when released. Fixing this problem required opening it up and re-seating the spring inside the unit. It was a fairly simple fix, and since then it's been working without any problems.preb

I am guessing most electric keyboards have a similiar set of options) It can take some getting used to, but this effect alone makes the pedal a must-have item. The pedal itself is heavy enough that it stays in place and the ONLY drawback to this pedal is that the plug is a straight-on plug. How odd. This review was flagged for writing Big Mu** using the two F's 🙂 For the money, this is a really hard pedal to beat. It goes from mild and laid-back to wild and intense. The controls feel great…like as in excellent quality. This is a reissue of the original Big Mu** PI. I tried a Big Mu** PI with Wicker and forget about it. It hissed so loud in Wicker mode that I couldn't even here myself think and it got even worse with the tone switch off. And even in the so-called Big Mu** PI mode, it didn't sound anywhere near as good as this Rams Head does. And, the Rams Head is quiet compared to the BM PI with Wicker. One more thing, The BM PI with Wicker does not say anywhere on it nor in the included paperwork where it's made, whereas the RH BM PI clearly says New York City on the face of it…Vincent
The tone sweep is nice and there are some interesting spots because it is linear while kind of non-linear at 10 to noon and about 1-2 on tone control. I can't say why but usually I had purchased like more expensive versions of ehx pedals. That being said, I think people need to realize that these are quite accurate reissues and circuits, and just because it is an affordable pedal doesn't mean it isn't great.
Overall: Floats like a stone and stings like a nest of angry hornets! This box has the buzzsaw sound down pat. The fuzz is a thick, smooth, and consistent. I like this kind of fuzz in particular because it’s less fuzzy and little more distortion-like. The Tone knob has a really wide sweep from boomy bass to mid-range Hades. It has plenty of gain on tap and even sounds pretty good with the guitar’s volume rolled back a skosh.I’ve never used the original Green Russian Muff and have only heard them compared through videos online, so I can’t speak as to how they’re different/alike. I got it because I didn’t want to haul my vintage Black Russian Muff around from gig to gig anymore because it’s getting valuable and since it was a pretty jenky design to begin with, it’s liable to break with heavy use. That being said, the reissue Green Russian Muff has a different sound than an original V8 Black Russian Muff. It doesn’t sound as good to me, but it’s not so different that I wouldn’t use the Green Russian live in lieu of the Black Russian for the aforementioned reasons. One huge plus for the Green Russian is its pedalboard friendly size. The Black Russian is the size of an 80s metal lunchbox and took up an awkward sized chunk of the pedalboard. Now there’s more room for other unnecessary boxes (gulp)! One noteworthy ding for this pedal is how difficult it is to see the script on the top of the pedal. The words are printed right underneath the knobs, so if it’s kinda dark (which it usually is) and the lights are all in front of you (which they usually are) the words are impossible to see. Overall it’s a nice fuzz especially for the price. It’s noisy, but once the music gets rolling you won’t even notice it.Brad

First of all let me say I also have the G1ON and bought the G1X Four for the enhanced features and so I'd have one with the expression pedal. I sold all my tube amps when I was laid off, retired and moved to Mexico. My reference point is tweed and blackface era tube amps. I gotta say, once you learn how to dial in the tones you want, these little plastic boxes do a pretty decent job of amp and effects modeling. Like the G1ON, the G1X 4 does a good job of imitating the touch and volume control dynamics of a cranked tube amp at any volume. I really like the Deluxe Reverb, AC30 and DC30 simulations. The G1ON has more vintage style amp types to choose from, and in that regard it is more useful to e. Two kinds of spring reverb, one eats up a lot of memory but really sounds lush like an external unit along with the other types (room, plate, hall, church, etc.). Tremolo is built into the Fender models that have tremolo along with a couple of very configurable trems and rotating speaker effects. The G1 4 does NOT have the Z Organ effect the G1ON does, boo hoo. Beyond that, there are tons of effects to play with and they all sound good to my ears. I currently have 3 small amp setups. 1. Quilter 101 mini docked in their 10" BlockDock cab. 2. Quilter MicroBlock 45 pedal teamed with a 5E3 pine cab with a Emi Legend 12" and 3. an old Carvin SX50 1×12". I can get all three do to do the Deluxe Reverb,Vox AC15/30, E and F series Tweed tones that don't make me miss my tube amps. Wish I would have had the G1ON and the 17.7lb Quilter 1×10" combo back when I was in a blues band and gigging. Interface improvements from the G1ON… Improved display allows for more descriptive/longer patch names. Four pots act as master vol, bass, middle, treble during performance mode for global tone and volume tweeking. The four pots also make adjusting settings easier. For several years now, my pedalboard has had only ONE guitar "FX" pedal. First it was the G1Xon. Now it's the G1Xfour. I play both acoustic AND electric thru the pedal, and they BOTH sound great! Though I've played for over 40 years, I'm not a professional musician and rarely play out; but I do play a lot at home and IMO this is the best VALUE "name brand" guitar multi-FX pedal on the market. I can't speak to it's use in a live setting , that's not what I bought this for but to have at home to record whether bedroom music or demos it's perfect. The effects are great they're easy to use, the older Zoom models were a bit laborious to set up and get sounding right but this has enough knobs to feel like you are just setting up any stand alone pedal. The distortions, the delays, reverbs etc are all good but it's the amp modelling and the EQ options that make it a great little tool to work with. No amp or no room for one in your apartment where your neighbours will pound the walls if you so much as sneeze too loud? No problem !!! this little guy's got you covered. A little tinkering and your demos sound better, a little more and you can get a reasonably good sound for home recordings. The looper is great, its easy to use. The tuner is good. What's not to love ? Plug this into your computer or your four-track or whatever recording devise you've got on with the earphones and you have a decent sounding pedal board and amp which takes up as much space as a box of chocolates. No one will be any the wiser. I'm sure I sound like an absolute shill for Zoom. I don't care I have a bunch of their gear and I love it all. Is it built to survive the apocalypse? No. Most of the stuff I own is plastic. Is it as warm and distinctive as Electro-harmonix or Boss ? No, but it's cheap and it's solid and it works. Is it going to sound perfect through your huge amp? I don't know but it's probably not the point. Me – I make music at home with cheap gear because I have no money or space. Zoom are a gift to home recorders everywhere. Overall: Finally got another Whammy V after missing my prior one in a "stupid-sell all-great new multi unit dumb idea". Not sure what to say about this pedal as it would seem of the many vids I have seen on it, I cast doubt if anyone really can understand how to use it without having one for a time. I constantly hear this "weeeeoooo" thing and really that might be of use now and then but what nails this pedal for me is the harmonizer mode section. 8va's and 4ths,5ths, utterly amazing. This is not so much a moving the pedal thing as everyone seems to want to do. Most of th etime mine is parked up or dwn for a specific harmony or maybe a sweep of low to high octave, play a version of Dazed and Confused using this and you may just never be the same. The lowered 5th harmonizer mode on this puppy is probably one of the best all time tones I have ever had the pleasure of playing. A harmonizer, with no set key or scale restriction, polyphonic tracking, true bypass, I'd pay more just for that. The DT model is cool but I am not really doing step tuning variants. Anyway, this pedal is sooooo much better than what you will hear being done on typical vids. Mastering this puppy will afford you a range of really cool tone possibilities nothing else can muster. Those who hate this pedal suffer from the terrible videos of it or the old models that glitch and burble from only being monophonic tracking. The buffer has been removed and this is improved poly tracking tech! Full bandwidth 1M ohm and out. Simply no comparison tech wise to the previous models.Whambam
I love how certain players use this pedal. Bucketed is the absolute master of the Digitech Whammy. I like Buckethead and got a whammy to try for myself. The only time I actually use it during performance as a ad-lib bit. The problem is that when its engaged it sucks the life out of your tone. Its like going from an all tube amp to using an iRig to play your guitar through your cell phones speakers. The effects are crazy awesome though. People that don't know gear that hear you play, bug out when they are trying to figure out how in the world you are getting those crazy sounds. The pedal needs recalibrate all the time. For no reason, even when you have the pedal on heel down, when you engage the unit the pitch will shift. The dive bomb effects are crazy for weird rumbling effects. All in all, typical of my experience with Digitech, they aren the best effects tonally. But if you want to go weeeee-ooohhhhh, weed-ohhhhhh a bunch for the fun of it, this is your pedalSpaceman Spiff
Bought this in a heartbeat to replace my Digitech Whammy IV, which is a fantastic pedal but lacks the sound quality and additional features of this latest version: the Whammy V. For the uninitiated: The Digitech Whammy is a versatile pitch-shifting, harmonizer, octave, drop-tune, and chorus pedal used extensively by at least one of your favorite pro guitarists: Johnny Greenwood, Tom Morello, Jack White, Matt Bellamy, Buckethead, and countless others. I use it not just to replicate parts of their songs–Johnny's +2-octave riff in "Just", the solo in "Like a Stone", the "bass" line in "Seven Nation Army"–but in plenty of my own songs, both live and in the studio. The construction is solid and designed for both touring and in-studio use–durable but not too heavy, big but not obnoxious. Next, the upgrades: This new Whammy comes with two huge improvements. The first is true-bypass switching. Previous models are well known for being tone-sucking beasts, and although there is still a noticeable change in your sound when this latest version is on, when it's off it's off. The other massive upgrade is polyphonic tracking while pitch-shifting, which means it can shift entire chords up or down without sounding glitchy or garbled (e.g., "My Iron Lung"). For people who like that glitchy Whammy IV sound and want the option to use it, there's now a Classic/Chords switch which lets you do just that. On the cosmetic side, Digitech renamed a few modes, reorganized the layout, and brought back the Whammy logo on the expression pedal. All of these upgrades are godsends for long-time users. Finally, the drawbacks: First, as always, there is no "intelligent" harmonizer setting, so you're still limited to choosing an interval–4th, 5th, 7th–and not a key–Bb, C#, E–for your harmonies. Also, this latest version keeps the MIDI jack but ditches the dry output, which is a bummer. Overall, the Whammy V is a phenomenal improvement over the IV and a unique pedal in its own right. 5/5Joe B.
