2. Fundamentals Of Guitar: A Workbook For Beginning, Intermediate, Or Advanced Students [Book]
Product Details:
This book is designed to be useful for guitarists at any skill level. beginners can use it as an introduction to the foundational concepts of the instrument, intermediate players can use it for training and theoretical work, and advanced players can explore the sections on advanced theory, extended technique and the exhaustive tables of melodic and rhythmic possibilities. it is divided into two parts: pitch and rhythm. part 1 (pitch) begins with the properties of string, harmonics, and tuning systems. it then moves methodically through pitch information, beginning with locating all versions of a single pitch, building pentatonic, heptatonic, and all possible symmetrical scales. this is followed by a study of intervals, with all possible locations of every two pitches, and a long study that moves through every possible fingering of three pitches, with a series of exercises to master triadic syntax. part 1 closes with a study of four-pitch structures and complete tables that show all possible pitch sets in circular visual notation. part 2 (rhythm) begins with a complete course in symmetrical picking, a method based on drum rudiments that builds control in the picking hand through an exhaustive variety of movements. the focus of this section is building a strong rhythmic foundation, with a focus on efficiency, accuracy, speed, dynamics, and groove. it is followed by a study of legato playing, working with ornaments and slides. the study of playing with fingers on multiple strings takes up the remainder of the book. this begins with the study of pulse against pulse, playing two simultaneous tempos. the book concludes with a study of polyrhythm, playing one rhythm against another. plain english is used as much as possible to describe theoretical concepts, and hundreds of illustrations were made for the book as an aid to those who either don't speak english or prefer to think visually. this approach is designed to be inclusive and to promote creative practice. the main idea of the book is described in this passage (page 154): even in this small area there is a lot of material, potentially a lifetime of study. the amount of information can feel overwhelming to students at any level. for this reason, the book is designed for self-directed practice, with an emphasis on what the player could do, rather than what the player should do. the principle is to develop your own learning process, rather than following someone else's. the ability to make choices is essential in finding a personal approach to the instrument. pick and choose the studies that seem interesting – there should be enough variety to accommodate a wide range of personalities. if any particular concept or exercise has been useful as the starting point for a new creative direction, then the book has done its job. its purpose is not to push any dogma, method, or style, but to open the door to options for guitarists of any background that are looking for new perspectives.

I've been taking guitar lessons for a year and this book is so complete. It answers all my questions. It's just what a beginner needs. In addition, the price was so reasonable.ja_jayli_pj8vwluiha
I have been playing for over 25 years and I can say without reservation this is unquestionably the best resource for any guitarist at any level. Very well written intuitively illustrated, easy to follow. And a great source of technical and historical insight to the instrument itself. If you were to have only one book or guide in your guitar studies this should be it. You can grow with it, and it will grow with you, the knowledge in this book becomes even more valuable as you grow from becoming a guitarist to becoming a well rounded musician. And in my opinion there is a difference. As they say knowledge is power, and this is the most powerful book for a guitarist. From simple scales to theory and improvising this book covers all aspects of playing, composition and styles. I am still learning, and this book is still the most valuable resource I have. I have studied everything from Andre Segovia to Al DI Meola to Steve Vai, and no matter how many lesson videos I have watched. Books and magazines I have read I have never found a more articulate and well rounded data base than I have in this book.seanpuppy
This is a very comprehensive book covering all aspects of guitars, history, how to play, amplifiers. Takes you from basic to professional standard. Full of diagrams and illustration. The best book to buy.captpugwash234

… the book causes you time and time again to step outside yourself and get out of your own way…… there is a bit of dry humor accompanying every few pages and / or new sections. This is a replacement copy (my second one) apparently when I lend it out it never comes back ! That is a testament to its content….jazzguitar7
It is a good book, with some good exercises, but the 'hands off' approach is a little too vague at times, and I can't fully understand why someone would reiterate so many times that a method book does not have a 'method'. You will certainly need to 'know your stuff' as many points are not introduced nor explained including some author-made abbreviations that are a little head-scratching for a while. For the 'advancing guitarists' it provides a take it or leave it reference manual for some exercises and approaches to practice sessions, as well as some rather intense sightreading of complex chords in different tunings.roo_aboo

12. Mel Bay's Complete Method For Modern Guitar [Book]
Product Details:
All seven volumes of mel bay's original, internationally acclaimed modern guitar method series are included in this single, deluxe master compilation. no other comparable method exists for the guitar! as mr. bay perceived the need for a guitar method that would effectively teach beginning guitarists to read music, this method is intentionally written in standard notation only, providing just enough music theory to understand what the student is required to play at any given point. although fingerstyle technique can be applied to the pieces and studies, this book is specifically tailored for the plectrum-style player. contains hundreds of beginner through advanced solos and duets in all fretboard positions and all keys, plus all four-note rhythm chord formations on high, middle and low sets of adjacent strings. this edition also includes additional outstanding plectrum guitar solo arrangements not found in the original seven volumes. all in all, this outstanding method leads the student to total mastery of the fretboard.

This is a good book for what it is, however I'd recommend the William Leavitt Books for those seeking more serious studies. Note reading/rythym reading/chord studies/chord melody studies/ simple harmony/ technical exercises/theory etc.clittlern1
I purchased this book as a reference text for studying country guitar rhythms, riffs and licks. As with all Mel Bay books, it's very complete. The music is written in standard (stave) and tab form and the companion CD makes a nice addition. The only downside, the book is concise. As a prerequisite, to reap the full benefit of the material, it would be very beneficial to have some knowledge of basic music theory. All in all, an excellent book but not for the beginner. On a level of 1(beginning) to 3(advanced), I would rate the book in the 2-3 range – intermediate to advanced guitarist.mr_kludge

i dont mind buying a used copy but this was a ripoff. The original 3 volumes has 424 pages, this one has 127 pages (only volume 1) and they are photocopies. Not happy! I was deceivedchrisnatana
This book (levels 1-3) is like a couple years of college level training. However, there are too many duet pieces which is crazy if you are learning by yourself. Therefore, you need to supplement with other materials. As far as theory and technique goes this book is hard to beat.jayafink
The kind of book that I have been looking to find for years. After reading many instructional guitar books and often finding the material not practical and draining, this book finally provided the tools necessary to improve my abilities through practical exercises and intuitive design . A very good book for sight-reading (starting from the bare basics) which is detrimental for any serious musician. The Unscholarly Scholar

My guitar teacher taught me with this book. It teaches you how to tune your guitar and the proper position in wich to play your guitar. It guides you through basic and big-sounding open chords and strumming/picking techniques. You even begin to cover reading music! That is the music industry music, folks, not just tabs. Not many other "Level 1" books provide that. It is a small, yet very versatile book. Obviously, it can be used as a teaching guide, though I strongly believe it can be a self-instruction book as well. The instructions are clear and they give you some popular songs to play to keep you motivated.NilGuitar
Not sure how to some of the music in the book is correctly notated according to professional musicians or music teachers that recommended it. For example, page 12 shows Ode to Joy begins in C but it is really E that is shown in the music notation. Hal Leonard Books have been around for years but this is the first copy I have ever owned where the music lesson read improperly.Relearning Classical Guitar
I've been using this series for my guitar students for decades. It is the best combination of well-paced material, variety of playing styles and skills, and songs that are mostly familiar. Would be 5 stars except for delivery issues (see)!Guitar Lady

This book (levels 1-3) is like a couple years of college level training. However, there are too many duet pieces which is crazy if you are learning by yourself. Therefore, you need to supplement with other materials. As far as theory and technique goes this book is hard to beat.jayafink
This is a good book, very deep. However, I STRONGLY recommend buying all 3 books separately! This book weighs like 20 lbs, is very awkward to tote around, & it will take you a long time to get through all 3 volumes anyway! also, it's intimidating seeing this 300 page book in front of you! It seems you aren't getting anywhere! Take my advice, but each volume separately. The book & the contents are fine, but it is simply too big & cumbersome!Teach-Y5l-R
Period. It is academic and in-depth method to invest years (or a life-time) into the study of the music and the instrument. If you are a passionate amateur who wants to play songs – stay away. If you want to become a jazz master and ready to study and not looking for a fast result – go for it. It starts with basics and goes far. Very far!Ol

Reviews:
This software is nothing like the piano software. It doesn't give you feedback on how well you played a piece. I don't think that it is really intermediate learning as it has stuff that I would consider for beginner's. There is also a delay from when you play a note and it registers that you play that note. Another thing I don't like is they need to show which finger to use to play each note above the tab or music notation. They do show the notes and the fingers you use to play on a fret board but it goes to fast to see it. I'm hoping I can get something out of this software maybe I can learn some scales. Read exactly what the software does before you buy it!toms musicians

The soft covered publication is crammed with useful information on all aspects of the guitar. There are tributes to a number of famous guitar players clearly establishing the guitar as a significant entertainment instrument. A great deal of emphasis has been placed on theoretical applications pertaining to guitar and the book contains easy to follow instructions on how to transfer the theory to practice. Much of the detail in the book is for the intermediate musician who ideally needs to be able to read music to fully benefit from the books elaborate treatment of guitar music theory. This book could be considered the 'Bible' for guitar players, and is very useful for ukulele players as well.2013auroebu

Reviews:
I've borrowed this book in the past and liked it, I felt guilty about having a borrowed copy so bad I finally bought my own copy and I'm glad I did. There is no one to practice with or have as a mentor for a beginner and as a sounding board (no pun intended) for me during this Covid-19 Pandemic, but I'm managing on my own. I just need to practice, practice, practice!dmbo_32
It is better because this 699 pages gave me everything I Must know in order to play guitar satisfactory in a near future. Thanks a lot to Herrluft as well as to ebay.Your are the Best!jkel8220
Background I have never had a music lesson (beyond school) but I can (just about) play a tune on piano by ear (with limited success but still get enjoyment from doing so). Nort can I read music. Becoming a virtuoso ain't gonna happen! I've had my guitar for over twenty years (again NO LESSONS) but have decided to try to learn to play better. Dummies review So far, this "How To" book gets my vote because it is well written without too much emphasis on classical music notation. I am still reading/absorbing it (slowly); so my opinion is changing as I progress. Learning guitar or any instrument (or, for that matter, any physical and mental activity) from a book alone is never going to be easy but I feel this book is a great first step. The concommitant videos are a complete bonus. My inability to play guitar won't be down to the book 😉monty969
